5 out of 5 stars GREAT " STUFF " FOR ANYONE.......2007-07-29

I would first like to say that I am NOT a 78 rpm collector. I do own about 250 CDs + maybe 50 cassette tapes virtually all of which are " Oldies. " Most of my Oldies primarilly consist of " Doo-Wop " with some Acapella, Rockabilly, Blues, Mid-60s Rock and R & B and lastly, a little Boogie-Woogie thrown in . Some of my favorite artists are JIMMY BEAUMONT & THE SKYLINERS, DION & THE BELMONTS, NOLAN STRONG & THE DIABLOS, THE PARAGONS, THE JESTERS, STREET CORNER SOCIETY, ELVIS PRESLEY, LITTLE RICHARD, JACKIE WILSON, THE COLLINS KIDS, BILLY LEE RILEY, BRIAN SETZER, BLIND WILLIE MC TELL, BLIND WILLIE JOHNSON, ALBERT AMMONS & PETE JOHNSON. I have listed all of the above because even though I own & appreciate every genre & artist listed above.....I also own & thoroughly enjoy the JOE BUSSARD CD.. " DOWN IN THE BASEMENT " !!!....As I said....I think that you DON'T have to be a 78 rpm collector to understand & appreciate that this is GREAT " STUFF " FOR ANYONE !!!!!!! ....Unlike other reviewers ( probably because I am not a 78 rpm collector ) I had not previously heard of the likes of the " Georgia Pot Lickers " ? ....However; like other reviewers I was attracted to " THE STUFF THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF " both by the Crumb illustrated cover + the knowledge that YAZOO never does seem to have any bad releases.....After listening to this CD; I can only agree that it really is " THE STUFF THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF "

4 out of 5 stars Neat set!.......2007-05-02

Much like the Old Hat compilation of records from Joe Bussard's collection ("Down In The Basement"), this 2-CD set is a hodge-podge of old-time string bands, blues, a little jazz, and other so-called "roots" music from the 1920s and early 1930s. This is rare stuff indeed--most of it unavailable on CD elsewhere, and you can forget finding copies of the original 78s! Fortunately, the transfers by Rich Nevins are marvelous; computerized "reprocessing" has been kept to a minimum and these records sound like they should: bright, clear, and natural. Yes, there's a little surface noise, but the serious record collector shouldn't mind that a bit. So many producers of reissues of vintage recoridngs seem to try to remove as much surface noise as possible, leaving recordings that are clean, yes, but dull and lifeless as well. Even with the light crackle, these transfers project a beautiful "presence." The selections are interesting too--I was especially drawn to the Luke Jordan selection ("If I Call You Mama"), Osey Helton's fiddle solo "Green River," and "Bells of Love" by the African-American shape note a-capella group, Middle Georgia Singing Convention No. 1 (and if you like this last group, check out the Document CD "Atlanta, GA Gospel" which includes their complete recorded output). The liner notes that accompany the set are lengthy, but unfortunately they reveal relatively little about the music on these records. The notes are mostly stories of how the records came to be acquired and ramblings about the hobby of collecting in general (not just records!) from producer Rich Nevins. This isn't necessarily bad--it makes for fun reading!--but I'd like to know a bit more about the music. Admittedly, there is probably very little known about the musicians on the recordings, but I'd have liked *something.* Also, as others have pointed out, there's no discography: no recording dates or locations, no matrix numbers, no issue numbers, no personnel listings, nada. In a set so clearly targeted to record collectors, this seems inexcusable. In addition, I'm disappointed in the DVD case-shaped packaging, which while elegant and attractive, doesn't store easily with the rest of my CDs. I would have much preferred a standard 2-CD double case. Because of the way the packaging has been made, it's often difficult for me to slide the booklet back into its paper pocket: the bottom frequently gets snagged on the cardboard foldover inside the pocket (something that could have easily been avoided with more standard packaging). Still, on the whole, this is a remarkable set making available some outstanding records in really outstanding sound. Every 78 rpm record collector should be delighted with it--I certainly am.

4 out of 5 stars The Stuff that Dreams are made of.......2007-02-12

This product is a quirky collection of roots music that really has no common thread running through other than they are extremely rare recordings collected over a long period. The discs are extemely well packaged with extensive liner notes. The notes also contain a history of two brothers who were eccentric (nuts) collectors in NYC.

4 out of 5 stars Treasure trove for fanatics.......2007-01-19

This collection is marvelous as a broad-strokes portrait of the music Americans were recording and listening to in a time well before the hegemony of the corporate conglomerate recording industry, when anyone with the admittedly cumbersome apparatus of the time could start their own record company. None of these songs were huge hits of their time, but many of them are treasures of American roots music. I've got to say, though, that it was the R. Crumb cover art that pulled me in.

5 out of 5 stars indeed........2007-01-16

great release of old-time recordings. hillbilly music, blues, ballads, gospel, & jugband music; all presented in fantastic sound quality. if you don't have any old-time music in your house, this would be a good 1st purchase. if you have lots of old-time music already, you will need to add this to the collection. one of the best reissues over the past few years.

This guy does not have the industry, spin, and following of genre masters like thievery company, but this is every bit as good. However you characterize this music it is in the top 5% the genre. If you like Zero 7, thievery company, air supply, or radiohead, then you will like this. Other reviewers have done a good job of describing the technical quality...I couldn't do that anyway. The used price reflects the current market value of the music.

5 out of 5 stars Great chilled groove CD.......2003-03-19

This CD is great for a myriad of occasions - it's the perfect type of background music, but can be in the "spotlight", too. It's ambient in the way that while you're listening, you feel like you should be watching a really cool movie - perfect soundtrack music. But it's also "groove" because you can't help but want to move your body to the beat at many occasions when listening.

I have listened to this CD many, many times and honestly am NOT at all tired of it. It's a true "classic" for me because it never gets old - I continue to discover more interesting elements every time I hear it. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Full of images and smooth, solid grooves.......2002-11-20

Uplift Drift, is a cinematic journey that "Lifts you up and takes you higher" Full of images and smooth, solid grooves that transport the listener to a place where you have the freedom to lean back and float or get up and move to the ambient groove.

This CD is very good in the audio sense also... Clean tight mixes, an obvious amount of work went into the recordings presented here. Terms like "attention to detail" come to mind. It seems a lot of attention was also paid to the psyco-acoustic realm, where sound images drift in, out and past the listener during their journey. Check this one out on headphones !!

The orchestration and rhythms are top notch and totally original. I think Magic Sound Fabric has carved out a signature sound here. Working in a genre where there is precious little "Dub" oriented music that smoothly blends elements of Ambient, Reggae, Experimental Electronic and good old Space Music, I would think this CD is poised for major exposure and acceptance in an otherwise cluttered music industry.

The CD features full art work and professional packaging unlike many indie artists. The label, Spiralight, has really pulled out all the stops in quality indie music distribution. I hope to see it grow as well.

All in all, Uplift Drift is a valued addition to any CD collection regardless of musical taste, but especially to those of us who enjoy good electronic music!

5 out of 5 stars This CD placed me back to a time for Love and REAL Music.......2007-07-23

Yes, it did, and I also found Patty Austins Love Me by Name in a single that is not available on any other CD/LP/ Even on her own works, she has not recorded this song, All I could do is lift up my hands with emotions when I heard it/ AND "Tell me a Bedtime Story" is another phenominal cut, yes, I said "Cut" (old school). With Herbie Hancock on the key board... Boy,,, that was a time when music was music, this CD brings you the warmth of your past....

3 out of 5 stars Has it's stand out moments.......2007-05-16

As I'm always on the look out for good music, and after reading my Boys Olukayode excellent review of this CD, I thought I'd take the plunge and order it. This CD passed me by on its initial release, as i was only ten, and was more into football than music, anyway I digress. The first track: 'Stuff Like That' I had heard on Quincy's Jook Joint CD, and If I'm honest I prefer that particular as it seems more lively than the offering, but it may be because i heard that version first. 'I'm gonna miss you in the morning', and 'Love, I never had it so good', leave me feeling a bit cold, but that maybe because, being mid-tempo songs, they don't do much for me, as the more up-tempo joints. The first standout for me is the 'Tell me a bedtime Story' song which is a lovely flute driven ( i think) instrumental, with a sung chorus, that raises and falls, and stays in the memory long after it has finished playing. The other is the last song on the CD 'Takin' It To The Streets' featuring among others a youthful Luther Vandross, which is a Gospel inspired anthem with very thoughtful deep lyrics. 'Love me by name' and 'Superwomen' are OK, but don't really stand out to my mind. This CD has introduced me to Quincy Jones, and the next on the list is "The Dude".

5 out of 5 stars Q Marks The Spot.......2006-06-12

After owning this on vinyl for almost 30 years, I finally got it on CD. The record still played well but it was beginning to show its age. Then there's the fact that they no longer make cars with tape players, apparently, and I need something to play in the new car I'm getting next month.

But most of all, I'm just bored beyond endurance with the majority of music coming out these days and have decided to spend my money going into the archives and revamping my record collection.

I am completely unabashed about my adoration for Quincy Jones. To me he is literally the best producer, conductor and arranger of my generation and I very much doubt I'll see anything to equal him in my lifetime. From the various magazine interviews and TV appearances of him I've seen, he seems like a pretty cool dude too.

This is the album that introduced to Q. I was 15 going on 16 and up until that point, the pinnacle of my musical pleasures had been provided by disco queens and old-school reggae dons. I mention no names. And then one day, my mother sent me out for some milk and I stopped by the house of this older guy I was friends with at the time. He told me he'd just bought a new album and asked me if I wanted to hear something special. I said sure, he put the record on and time just seemd to stand still. I stood there, transfixed, eyes wide open and mouth agape. And this was just to the first strains of the first song on the album, the title track, "Stuff Like That."

I literally didn't move a muscle until my friend had played the entire first side of the album and the first two songs of the second side. I was entranced. I had never heard anything like it. The clarity of the music (My friend had a pretty decent sound system. Sure it was 1978 but still), the lush orchestration that while complex was never overbearing, the solos...

And then there were the voices... boy, what that man can do with voices.

I came to, and left to run my errand. I got a sound clip around the ear for being late with the milk. Happy days. I vowed I was going to get a copy of the album for myself and vowed I was going to get a stereo system like my friend's. It was a year before I succeeded with the former and another nine before I managed the latter but there can be no doubt: It was Quincy Jones who set me on the path to the appreciation of quality music. That same year, Q produced The Brothers Johnson's "Blam!" and the soundtrack to "The Wiz", which is how he got to meet Michael Jackson. The following year he produced Jackson's "Off The Wall". The rest, as the say, is history.

It was on this album that Q introduced us to Bruce Swedien (even his name sounds efficient somehow) and his "Acousonic Recording Process". There's a detailed explanation of how the process works on the album/CD inner sleeve and whatever it is they do, it seems to work. Few producers have been able to match the quality of the sound produced by the collaboration of Jones and Swedien. It's my bet that few ever will.

The album is a veritable array of stars, both established and emerging (at the time):

"Stuff Like That", a funky tune featuring Valerie Simpson and the legendary Chaka Khan on vocals. Sax solo by George Young.

"I'm Gonna Miss You In The Morning", a ballad featuring Patti Austin and the late Luther Vandross on vocals (and this was some years before he went on to become the megastar that he did). Lyricon solo by Tom Scott.

"Love, I Never Had It So Good", a stomping choral piece with Patti Austin and Charles May on lead vocals. Electric sax solo by Michael Brecker, Fender Bass solo by Anthony Jackson.

"Tell Me A Bedtime Story", probably the first ever jazz tune that made me sit up and pay attention. Herbie Hancock lays down electric piano improvisations and Harry Lookofsky records his violin over the track, copying Hancock note for note. He doesn't do it just once though. He does it several times, over and over, and the end result sounds like an entire string section. But it was just one man! Flute solo by Hubert Laws.

"Love Me By Name", intense ballad sung by Patti Austin. Keyboards by Herbie Hancock, Guitar by the late Eric Gale.

"Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)", another, more mid-tempo ballad sung by Patti Austin. Flute solos by Hubert Laws, Electric piano solo by Herbie Hancock, Lyricon solo by Tom Scott.

"Takin' It To The Streets", brings the album to a close with a gospel-influenced stomper. Luther Vandross and Gwen Guthrie, both of who have since passed away, sadly, provide vocals. Tenor sax solo by Michael Brecker.

There are no extras on the CD, no gimmicky remixes or video clips and that suits me just fine. There are just seven pieces of good quality music. Best money I've spent all month.

5 out of 5 stars Average Q, Above Average for Everybody Else.......2005-10-17

" Sounds And Stuff Like That" is Q at his best. He seems to always get the best talent around to record for him. It dosen't matter if they're singing or writting songs for him. Case/point, "Tell Me a Bedtime Story" was written by Herbie Hancock. It no telling how Herbie would have done it if left to him. Now lets keep in mind that Herbie is a musical genius himself. But throw Q in the mix, and you have a song that is remembered for all time. Q can take an arrangement and make it better. The title track is another example of this. Being around Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie helped him develope the Big Band sound that you can hear dominate every song on this effort. there is so much good about this effort that I can't list them all. "Love me By Name" sung by Patty Austin, "Sounds And Stuff Like That" sung by Valerie Simpson with the dominating vocals of Chaka Khan. This album is a prime example of Q taking great talent and making it better. Average Quincy.

Trout Fishing in America records are the musical version of face licks from floppy-eared hounds--it doesn't get much friendlier than this. InFINity, the duo's 10th album and their fifth for kids, carries forth the warm, wet tradition. Here, Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood cast their nets far and wide, reeling in tunes that range from folk to Cajun to general kid stuff to a Shaft-meets-Charlie Brown brand of funk, as Grimwood aptly puts it. The result is a fun, musically faultless wackfest, which, even with all its varied influences, never once dips below a loyalist's expected pizzazz level. A case in point is "My Best Day," whose Paul Simon-ish intro paves the way to lyrics about kid euphoria: sister's evicted from her bedroom, a blue sparkle drum set is scored, etc. While it's snowing whipped cream and raining chocolate on that tune, trouble's brewing on "You Can't Go," on which a player piano teases the song's slothful target. "Your daddy tried to warn you and your mama told you so," but the homework didn't get done and the dog didn't get fed, so it's sayonara, Charlie. A few songs cast a line toward the very young--"Your Name Backwards" works spelling wonders on the just-learning-to-read set, and "Simon Says" and "Dinosaur in Your Bathtub" set standard cases of the sillies in motion. Older folks will want to take the bait too, and not only because songs like "Are We There Yet" beckon backseat bickerers to play along. This record, with its unmatched gloom-chasing quotient, isn't apt to cause parental embolisms, even after a seemingly inFINite number of spins. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for young kids!.......2005-09-28

My son is 5 years old and loves this CD. The music is upbeat and the lyrics are clever (so not boring for adults). It's great for car rides and dancing in the living room.

5 out of 5 stars The best children's band that has ever existed........2004-08-17

When you first turn inFINity on, you might not be paying too much attention to it. Vaguely listening, it sounds like your generic children's album. A guitar/bass duo are playing what sounds like a generic children's song and a man with what sounds like the voice all children's folk singers have is singing generic children's lyrics. Whatever.

But after awhile, you begin to notice something that sets this album apart from the many other children's albums you've heard - the music is GOOD. It doesn't sound like children's music, it sounds like real, good folk music. And the lyrics... they're GOOD. They make sense. And they're funny. Oh, and they're not limited to folk, either. Check out the soft rock "Dinosaur In Your Bathtub" or the jazz "Everything That's Made of Wood".

This band has managed to create an album that not only is similar enough to children's music to hold kids' attentions and make them laugh, they've also made a great album for anyone who enjoys music.

And, adding on to their greatness, they have a great sense of humor. Tune to the second-to-last track, "It's Better Than That". The lyrics begin... "I got news for you kids who think adults are lucky - 'They own their own cars and everything's just ducky.' 'Going to bed whenever they want to.' If that's what you think, I've got a flash for you."

"Oh no," you think, "Not another song that's so filled with 'be good' messages, there's no room for real music or lyrics." Then the rest of the song continues. The surprise value of this song will have you laughing your head off the first time you hear it, so I won't reprint they lyric here. But let's just say that the song doesn't go the way you'd expect it to.

This album is the PERFECT children's album in that it combines good, clean music for children with good, funny music for adults.

5 out of 5 stars I love Trout!!.......2003-05-14

This album is great - loads of fun, good "repeatability factor" (this means you can play it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over in the car - the way kids always want to - and you won't want to press the eject button on the dashboard. Or on your kid's car seat.

The music is silly, intelligent, sly, outrageous and the fun comes through in every note. Having seen Trout in concert twice now, I can truthfully say that these are guys you want your kids to hang out with. In fact, you'll want to listen too.

The song "My Best Day" came out of a workshop Trout participated in with a bunch of kids all talking about what they wished they could have for their very best day. I think the part about "raining chocolate" came from Keith though. If you listen to Trout music, you will hear a distinct prejudice regarding all things chocolate.

Get this album, put it on loud and let the kids have a ball! I guarantee you will too.

5 out of 5 stars These guys just keep getting better!.......2002-02-14

From another family musician and a fan of theirs: I hear lots of musicians trying to do what the Trouts are doing--they do it best. It is intelligent, fun, thoughtful, kind, engaging entertainment with an ethic. These guys care about people and community. This collection shines and does not tire easily. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars More Trout, please........2002-01-18

Excellent! More danceable fun from TFIA. And don't call it "kid's music", please - the lyrics are always amusing for everyone and the rhythms just right for bopping about.

Album Description

The Starlight Mints face an endless stream of comparison to fellow Oklahoman freaks of nature The Flaming Lips. When it comes to hallucinatory pop complete with sweeping string arrangements, poignantly strangled vocals, and lyrical references to giant centipede attacks, the comparisons pretty much come with the territory. The Dream That Stuff Was Made Of, embraces everything from rapturously Bowie-esque melodrama to odd Middle Eastern textures to pure noise cacophony. This See Thru Broadcasting release comes with a bonus disc with 2 audio tracks - 'Popsickle' & 'Pusher Girls' and the video for 'Popsickle'.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Buena vista..........2004-04-20

There must be something in the water in Oklahoma. Indie-pop band Starlight Mints is often compared to their fellow Oklahomans the Flaming Lips, with the same sort of off-kilter vocals and deliciously strange lyrics. They're not quite up to the Lips' level, but they are wonderful at solid psychedelic pop.

A smooth violin solo builds up to solid percussion blast and a sort of twangy blast... and that's just "Submarine #3," the likably weird opener of the album. Following it is a stream of string/acoustic pop ("Sir Prize," "Valerie Flames"), reverb rock ("Sugar Blaster") and surreal ballads ("Cracker Jack").

The Mints are plenty of fun, with their strange pop tunes and nonsensical lyrics. At times it sounds like the Mints were shooting for a more exotic sound than they got, and that their music couldn't quite catch up with their ambitions. Regardless, it's hard to find indie pop that is much more likable and innocent than this. They sort of sparkle.

The sound of the Starlight Mints is pretty textured, with acoustic guitars, flutes, trumpets, drums and plenty of very creatively-used violins. Somehow all these are woven together, giving a feeling of orchestral richness rather than clutter. And a few of the sounds don't sound like anything at all: for example, a ringing, reverberating twang on "Submarine #3" that defies classification.

Allan Vest's vocals are slightly thin and yowling, in the tradition of Jeff Mangum and Wayne Coyne. And the songwriting is perhaps the best part. "I tried to fly you back to the sun/Then you were attacked by giant centipedes" is only one of the songs, with their descriptions of self-beheading, bloody chandeliers, shaking hands with cats in mirrors, fish queens and "Margarita the octopus."

Fun psychedelic pop crops up in the oddest places. And judging from the Starlight Mints' "Dream That Stuff Is Made Of," Oklahoma was one of those places. Trippy, funky and immensely weird.

5 out of 5 stars Its not perfect, but.......2003-12-16

the songs that are good are so good that it doesnt matter. This deserves five stars even if they recorded Captain Beefheart taking a dump. The Mints write nonsensical, outrageously fun pop tunes that stick like a burr on the pant leg. This is what music is about-FUN, and fortunately for Oklahomans the Mints have not forgotten this, whereas the Flaming Lips have. If you liked The Pixies alot, their ghost is resurrected, force-fed corn syrup, and made to sing with Syd Barrett with Queen playing melody. Best buy Ive made in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars My current favorite CD.......2003-10-28

I picked up this CD on a random Amazon recommendation, and it quickly grew to be my favorite CD. Every time I take it out of my CD player, it finds its way back in. These guys sound so great, every song on here is a winner. In particular, I enjoyed Sir Prize, Crackerjack and Margarita.

The Starlight Mints may take some getting used to, after all, not every rock band has a violin in it, or deliberately plays discordant melodies, but I believe they are worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2003-05-27

After seeing the Starlight Mints open for the Toadies in 2001 I knew I had to get the album after their stellar performance. Often times, however, I see a band play live and their album does not do the performance justice and I end up hating it.
Such was not the case with the Mints. The album was splendid from, beginning to end.
This is one of those rare albums that is an excellent listen from beginning to end. I won't compare the Mints to another band. To me, they are unique.
It's post-pop-rock with a latin flavor sprinkled in the mix here and there.
You want a perfect album? Purchase this one.

i very much like the starlight mints... however, i ordered this album expecting to get the version described in the 'album description' under 'editorial reviews.' i was disappointed when my order arrived.
this is NOT the two disc version with the bonus tracks and video.

if you don't care about the extra tracks and video, go ahead and order it. it's a good album. 4.5 stars, well worth $12.
but if you are interested in the bonuses, as i was, then look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Quirky and fun.......2005-07-13

I love watching minor-league hockey and after hearing "I Wanna Drive the Zamboni" at a game, I downloaded this whole CD and their other one. Who would have thought there could be so many fun songs about hockey? I love the lyrics of "Slapshot Love" - 'skating on the blue line, that's when I saw your green light, so I lined up for Slapshot love' - and "Davey Hatrick"! The music is a blend of rock, ska and even some polka ("The Goalie is Drunk", oom-pah-pah!), the Zambonis are brilliant! Hey, if it's endorsed by Mister Hockey (track 5), 'howe' can you go wrong?

5 out of 5 stars i love these guys.......2004-03-26

i love the zambonis. while some may feel that "most of the music and lyrics could be written by a third grader," real music fans can tell immediately that these guys rock. their songs are so happy! and there *are* songs with deeper meaning. for example, the breakaway, found on "more songs about hockey." i'm in college and i blast these guys like it's my job.

5 out of 5 stars HOCKEY MUSIC!!!.......2002-04-03

Only a jr. high student would like this CD? PLEASE! This band writes for every hockey fan in the world!

If you're a hockey fan and you haven't heard the Zambonis yet, you're really missing out. Amusing and catchy, these songs will linger with you. Perfect to listen to on a frozen pond, playing with friends or in the car on the way to a NHL game.

2 out of 5 stars Mostly garbage.......2000-02-08

Although most of the music and lyrics could be written by a third grader, the song "I want to drive the Zamboni" expresses the emotions felt by many hockey fans and ice skaters. Not for the average music fan, this CD is directed to the junior high and high school age hockey player/fan.

There's a lot of schlock on Broadway these days, so it's especially frustrating when a small, off-Broadway show doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Carried by the indomitable George Dvorsky and Sally Mayes in the title roles, Pete 'n' Keely should have been a lot more successful than it was, so we're lucky to have this recording to immortalize the little show that should have been. Inspired by the likes of Steve (Lawrence) and Eydie (Gorme), Pete and Keely are two high-voltage entertainers; the show purports to document their hectic 1968 TV special. Dvorsky and Mayes are fantastic as they frenetically go from clever originals by Patrick S. Brady and Mark Waldrop to over-the-top Rat Packy takes on classic tunes such as "Fever" and "Besame Mucho." As for the finger-snapping rendition of "Battle Hymn of the Republic," you've got to hear it to believe it. Our only qualm: the recording doesn't do justice to Bob Mackie's delirious costumes. Oh well, can't have it all. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's Perfect.......2001-12-31

I lent my copy of Pete 'n' Keely to a friend. When she returned my CD, she said that it was perfect. I agree. Many of the songs are an enjoyable trip down memory lane that brings back many fond memories. The new songs by Patrick Brady and Mark Waldropfit right in. Sally Mayes does the best rendition of "Black Coffee" that I have ever heard.Goerge Dvorsky's Fever" is also fantastic. It is not unusual for me to be sitting at my desk at work and have one of the songs run through my memory. That isd without any music in the background. My friends who have heard me play the CD have purchased a copy for themselves, they liked the CD so much.

5 out of 5 stars Upbeat Musical Magic.......2001-12-11

This album is a MUST for any fan of Broadway - full of upbeat musical magic performed flawlessly by George Dvorsky and Sally Mayes.

The cd captures wonderfully the manic energy of Pete and Keely - a television couple that reigned supreme in the 1960s. Throughout the album we hear them at their best as they recall their joint musical career and their award winning signature tunes.

Dvorsky is a smooth as silk baritone with shades of Robert Goulet. His rendition of "Fever" on this album is alone worth the cost of the cd. Although done with a slight comic edge, the song comes alive with a wonderful nuance that Dvorsky delivers effortlessly. You'll find yourself replaying that track again and again.

The same could be said for Maye's sparkling "Black Coffee". Her voice is pure velvet, with a touch of "seen it all and done it all" flowing throughout this sensational track.

This original cast recording has been produced perfectly. The sound quality is superb, and the inner liner has some great photos of Pete n Keely in their glamorous Bob Mackie costumes that were such a huge part of the New York City premier.

If you like Broadway - then this cd is a must have...

If you like to smile when you listen to a cd - then this recording is a must have...

And....if you like your music upbeat and infectious - then this original cast recording is a MUST HAVE for your collection...

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hello?.......2006-05-09

Why isn't this band a national phenom? This is one of the catchiest "unpop" albums to come out in years and it deserves fame. Great songwriting, witty, silly, sometimes even profound, with great hooks. This album tops most of the stuff that's getting all the attention. So what gives?

4 out of 5 stars They should be everywhere........2005-05-17

Creative, fun lyrics - think "They might be Giants", solid music talent = a great cd. Highly recommend for those who know life is not so serious.

5 out of 5 stars Suprise! Best album I've bought in years!.......2005-05-06

I bought this because of an internet slam to Dubyah made to the tune of the *ss$ole song. I dug that tune and went out on a $12.50 limb for the disc. It's good. Real good! The music has a wide appeal and will be liked whether you are 50 or 15 (warning - explicit lyrics - those over 50 should use caution!!).
I just ordered the rest of Jim's albums including the "Jim Infantino album - Titanic. I only wish I had them delivered next day air. This stuff is smart and yet light and enjoyable. Jim's Big Ego will bring a smile to your face!

5 out of 5 stars Domestic bliss never sounded so good.......2003-12-15

Being lucky enough to live in the Boston area and get a regular dose of Jim's Big Ego concert fun practically whenever I feel like it, I can safely say that it's a band that has close ties to its fandom, and hopefully always will. This notion has become particularly apparent to me with the release of their latest album.

They're Everywhere is a mix of old and new material, but a good chunk of it should be familiar to longtime concert-goers, MP3.com frequenters, and album-buyers. "A**hole" is really "Hi-ho," a concert favorite finally recorded in the studio and given a different (and infinitely more obvious) name. "Cut Off Your Head" has been slightly reworked from the version found on the "Titanic" (live) album. "In a Bar" is a song that was conceived and born entirely from live improv.

And "Mix Tape?" Just visit their official website and "egog" forum to figure out where the sentiments behind this rather anti-RIAA song came from. Jim's Big Ego is all about utilizing the internet, free downloads, and unusually liberal consumer sharing rights to increase their music listenership base.

This album has a decidedly polished, upbeat feel that was lacking from previous endeavors. Songs like "The Music of You," "Math Prof Rock Star," and "Party on the Everglades" seem to hint at a certain level of comfort, ease and-- dare i say?-- domestic bliss. It's as if Jim's Big Ego has finally found its groove. As if the studio time has been one constant party that we've finally been invited to.

Of course, there are still a few sad, thought-provoking songs. "Better Than You" could be construed as highhanded and preachy, but the quiet poetic simplicity of the lyrics will suck you in nevertheless. "Love What's Gone" uses the symbolic imagery of baseball to describe the loss of a loved one. But "The Ballad of Barry Allen" has struck me the hardest, even if it is just a song about a comic book character (The Flash). Jim Infantino manages once again to give a new and heart-rending perspective to a persona we thought we had figured out decades ago.

Though perhaps not their best album overall, it should definitely be in any JBE fan's collection. I would anticipate that it would sit best with either longtime and loyal fans, or first-time listeners that come from a pop music fan base, like Barenaked Ladies.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner.......2003-12-06

Been a fan of JBE for a few years now and this latest album is my new favorite. "Smart pop" is right. Catchy songs that you can listen to over and over again with getting nauseus. If you're sick of the same old radio play, but this album. If you've never seen them in concert, I highly recommend the experience.

It was this album, when I was about 9 years old that made me want to play guitar. It's incredible. My dad owned it on vinyl. When I went to college, he made me a cassette because it was out of print. I finally got my copy on CD from this site. If you want to know what makes Leo great, this is the album to listen to...no singing...just music.

5 out of 5 stars Dreams and all my jealousy.......2004-06-12

This is one of my favorite Kottke recordings, and I have every one, even the scratchy Circle 'Round the Sun that only came out on vinyl. Mona Ray, Constant Traveler, Hole in the Day, Twilight Property are all favorites of mine. the magic of Kottke is that I never really select songs on his albums to play as I listen straight through like it's a continuous textured journey. And it is. And this is. Echoes of Mudlark and Ice water resound here.
