A "Must Have" for anyone into Progressive Metal.......2007-04-29
This CD hasn't left my player in weeks!! I love it, actually I like all of Evergreys music, I recently just discovered them, I heard a few tracks from a few CD's and this one is the best out of them all, although their all great this is my favorite! If you love Dream Theater, Symphony X, Queensryche etc you have to pick this up!
Some excellent, memorable ideas for metal amongst less inspiring fare.......2007-04-21
3 1/2
Well put together progressive metal release gets by on impressive arrangements and instrumentation but not without detractions. Bogged down in the 80's-licious, over-gruffed machismo of the singer, some of the ambitious yet still repetitive writing veers more towards pretentious when coupled with this broadway-like quality the album provides. Sometimes the awkwardly languished theatrics teeter out in an unarticulated haze of overreaching, but more often Evergrey dazzles by helping to take the genre into uncharted terrain, equally comfortable at mixing Therion, Dream Theater, and Andrew Lloyd Weber type dynamics in one song. At best, a fantastic, urgent, and dynamic melodic pulse, complimented by the skilled keyboarding throughout, makes beautiful, romantic, mature heavy rock feel as though at times it should appeal to your parents instead. If one is in the young, pseudo-self-consciously-hip phase of musical development perhaps these stabs at an operatic metal will not sit well, but anyone smart enough to process the few noticeable songs for what they try to be on their own will be privy to a few fantastic highlights in the rarely covered, classier side of this genre.
Evergrey's best..........2007-01-19
There are plenty of people who will disagree with me on this, but I have all of Evergrey's albums, and this one is the best, with Recreation Day a close 2nd.
As others have written, this is about a man trying to readjust to life after an alien abduction. The lyrics are effective, and the music is dynamic and powerful. Evergrey, like a lot of prog-metal bands, utilizes a cheesy synth from time to time, but it really works on this album, with the sci-fi spacey theme. They are also further back in the mix than on other efforts, and the result is terrific atmosphere over a powerful, though musically limited band. Eglund's vocals are perfect (and not upper-register whining) here.
Evergrey's not really a 5-star band, but this is a 5-star album. Recreation Day is pretty darn good too. Other efforts are solid but not exceptional. Get this one.
The Best Of Evergrey?.......2006-09-08
I have Recreation Day and Monday Morning Apocalypse in addition to In Search Of Truth, and I love each of them. Monday Morning Apocalypse did not get as many good reviews as the other 2 titles, but I like it just as much. Evergrey can be a bit creepy on this album, but they pull it off nicely. All 5 members of this band contribute something special, and the result is a heavy duty consistent sound that includes depth and resonates well with even the most jaded Metal lover. If you only have money for one Evergrey album, make it this one. If you have more money, get all 3 that I mentioned. They are all superb.
Progessive Metal at its best!.......2005-08-30
A band from Sweden that masters progressive metal, they are simply the gods of prog. Not there best record but definetly one prog fans should listen too.
9 Tracks each with a different sound a uniqueness of catchy solos, riffs and structure.

Someones Nightmare is my Dream Album!.......2005-11-18
It seems like there must be some downside to listening to something this good. Everything else has. If it Tastes good, it's fattening or bad for you or both. If it feels good, it's dangerous, addicting or can give you VD. My daddy always said, if it has an upside lookout for the downside but I can't see it. I've been listening to Evergrey for thirty months and everything is hunky dory. I haven't gained any weight, my blood pressure is fine and I can go forty-eight hours without listening to Evergrey.
And what about Evergrey. Isn't there some kind of law or something against being this good? They're unbelievable, they're too good for their own good. I'm worried that another band might put a contract out on them. LOOK OUT EVERGREY!!!! Yes there are bands that are as good Instrumentally and yes there are bands that are as good on songwriting and arranging. There's even bands that are as good lyrically and production capabilities but damn it they're all different bands.
Evergrey is the complete package. They play a dark melodic, sometimes symphonic progressive rock / metal. They've been on the carousel four times and have four brass rings. How many pretenders can say that.
For the glass is half empty crowd, I have never seen a negative review on Evergrey. In fact, with regard to In Search of Truth, I've never seen anything but five star reviews. Nada, Zip, Zero, Zilch! Hey naysayer, be my guest, check around. Good luck.
In Search of Truth
"I have decided to keep this tape recorder with me at all times. Just so that I maybe one day can explain all the strange things happening to me. The lack of sleep...the loss of time. But most of all, the sensation of never being lonely...always being watched..." With this narration, In Search Of Truth begins.
All joking aside, this is a monumental work. It's a concept album about; take your pick: (a) an alien abduction, (b) a man who is crazy and perseverates on aliens and thinks he's experienced an alien abduction (c) a man who is crazy because of an alien abduction and believes his home is co-habitated by aliens, (d) any combination of above that you chose.
While the premise for In Search of Truth may sound silly, Evergrey pull it off magnificently. Truly, the music and especially singer/guitarist, Tom Englund's, performance is inspired. I have never heard a singer play their part better. You feel his bewilderment, his agony and his desperation. Even though it is fiction, you empathize with our victim.
Now some of you may think that my review is not objective since I need my Evergrey fix every forty-eight hours but let me assure you, my views have not been skewed in any way, even if it's obvious that this album which should have won an EMMY for progressive album of the year. There is no justice!!!!! Down with the Academy for the Promotion of unemotional, simplistic songs or P.U.S.S for short.
CONCLUSION
It is a shame that this music gets to be heard only by the persistent few in America. Even so, In Search of Truth has had very respectable sales in America and I expect it to keep growing long after demand has diminished in Europe, where everybody is readily exposed to their own music, mostly because of the phenomenon known as downloading and by word of mouth.
I want to remind you, if you're old enough, that "Stairway to Heaven" was not released as a single and was not a hit at the time of it's release. Nevertheless, It has become a classic. I can visualize such a scenario for In Search of Truth
In closing, I want to tell you that at the present time there are several other very good reviews on this masterpiece and I wasn't going to review it because of that but it is my co-favorite, along with Light of Day, Day Of Darkness, so how could I not review it?. Besides it really is the 2001 album of the YEAR. I dare you to check it out! I double dare you, forget about the du du and check it out!!!
Worth the wait..........2005-07-14
When I first heard the MP3 samples of some of the songs on this I knew it was good and that I'd like it, but I was discovering Pain of Salvation at the time and thought I'd wait till a point when I needed a new bandwagon to jump on ;o)
Well, I'm not disappointed. This is a great album full of catchy songs (the kind you like in your head all day). There's some tasteful guitar work with enough technicality to impress. I can hear a bit of Andy La Rocque's influence in the production (an exemplary guitarist, King Diamond) and this just adds to the interest. The keyboards don't quite fit all the time, but now I appreciate the extra melody line they bring to the music. I also like the varitey in the drumming, some nice work.
Lyrically, a lot of people have interpreted it as a story of alien abduction, but it is actually a story of mental illness/paranoia and very well written.
Based on this release, Evergrey are one of the shining lights of 'progressive' metal. Maybe I'll wait to buy their next cd (Recreation Day) as well. Even if I'm a bit behind the times, this one should keep me happy for a while and I'd like to keep the bandwagon rolling as long as possible.
