One of the Greats.......2007-06-09
Truly Five stars here, probably the Black Crowes' best album. Each song is a masterpiece, wonderfully written and produced. I'd buy it just on the strength of "Remedy" or "Sometimes Salvation," two of the most wonderfully- crafted rock songs you'll hear. But you also get five or six other classics thrown on top here.
"Sting Me," "Thorn In My Pride," "Bad Luck Blue Eyes," and "Hotel Illness" are all instant classics, and there isn't a dull moment on the whole recording.
A kind of breathtaking record, actually. Any gritty rock and roll fan will eat it up. It's on par with Exile on Main St or Physical Graffiti!
LORD OF MERCY!!!.......2007-04-05
Ok. So now Captain & Tennille don't make it as cutting edge rock and roll anymore. Ditto Olivia Newton John. Time for all you Yankees to get some sense and rinse the muck out of your ears. The South gave America jazz, gospel and rock and roll. This little album here just crawls with gators and kudzu. It tastes New Orleans. Burns like Atlanta. And it breathes clean like the Smoky Mountains.
Think your little piss-ant weinie art rock collection is so golden? Nothing but a Shirley Temple to this tumbler of Jack. Time to rock like a man on heavy testosterone. Time for women to strut a like an estrogen marinated Venus.
Guys, put on your dancin' shoes. Ladies, put that blue dress on. South is gonna rise again. Stand back and prepare to be assimilated. Resistance is futile.
THE BLACK CROWES' ANTICIPATING FOLLOW-UP TO $HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER........2007-02-13
I will be writing a review on the legendary album entitled "THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION" by one of Rock's greatest bands. I give you one of America's favorite sons and one of Georgia's pride and joy's, THE BLACK CROWES. This album was originally released in 1992 on Compact Disc on the Def American Recordings records label in association with Angelus Entertainment. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
During this period, THE BLACK CROWES were on a roll. The band was celebrating their newfound fame and fortune as a result of their extremely successful debut album "$HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER" from 1990. Their popularity was forever growing tremendously as a result of their growing fanbase and following resulting in sold out concerts everywhere they performed. The band was definitely enjoying the fruits to its fullest excesses that the good life has to offer. According to the Rock critics, lead vocalist and frontman Chris Robinson was being labeled as one of Rock's newest sex symbol's. Having accomplished all of these tasks, it was now time for THE BLACK CROWES or should I say, lead vocalist and frontman Chris Robinson, his brother lead guitarist Rich Robinson, bassist Johnny Colt, drummer Steve Gorman, lead and rhythm guitarist Marc Ford and keyboardist and piano Ed Hawrysch to head back into the recording studio and record the follow-up to their extremely successful debut album $HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER." As a result, after a certain period of time passed, THE BLACK CROWES would complete and hand in to their record label Def American Recordings records, "THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION." In my opinion, "THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION" is a well recorded and balanced album. And yes, this album does kick a*s.
All I will say is if you really want to get down and Rock to the music of this album, listen to the Rockers such as "Sting Me," the breathtaking "Remedy," the soulful "Thorn In My Pride," the blistering "Black Moon Creeping," the killer "No Speak No Have" and the funkish "My Morning Song."
If you like Blues Rock ballads, listen to the songs "Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye," "Sometimes Salvation" and "Time Will Tell."
This album does contain one Country Rock song called "Hotel Illness," this song sounds really good.
Overall, this is one hell of an album worth seeking out and checking into.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, with the success of their follow-up album "THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION," THE BLACK CROWES would continue on the path to further fame and fortune. The band's continued sell out's of all their concerts is an indication that THE BLACK CROWES are here to stay. With this in mind, THE BLACK CROWES legend does not even come close to ending here. There will be new stories that would need to be conquered, told and written in pages and chapters about their glorious career. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will have to stay tuned and read more about at a later time. So here's to you Chris, Rich, Johnny, Steve, Marc and Ed. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. Keep On Rockin'. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE BLACK CROWES RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
The Best Crowes Album!.......2007-01-14
There is literally not a single dull moment on this album! I can put this cd on play and just let the entire thing play. This album has it all; excellent vocals, great(alternately tuned) guitar work, fast songs, slow songs, and so much more! Not to be missed is an EXCELLENT cover of Bob Marley's "Time Will Tell" to close out the cd. All the other songs must be heard to believe how great this cd is. I used to think (and I think the majority of people still do) that the Crowes' debut "Shake Your Moneymaker" was better than this one. It took many years of listening to both albums for me to realize that this one had the slight edge over that one. "Sting Me" is one of my favorite Black Crowes tunes ever. Then there is the string of softer songs in numbers 3-5. These are probably my favorite part of the album. I don't like to give an analysis on every song, but I don't feel there is a need to here. They are ALL great songs. 10 songs = 10 GREAT songs on this one! Don't miss this album if you like classy, blusey rock music. Also recommended if you like this album are any of the Black Crowes' first 5 albums, though the first 3 are the truly great ones.
One of the best rock albums of the 90's.......2006-08-16
After the Black Crowes received mainstream success with their debut, "Shake your Moneymaker", the boys come out with a powerful blend of soulful rock. They also brought in highly skilled lead guitarist Marc Ford who sprinkles his guitar soloing magic all over these tracks. The brothers Robinson have also wrote a great bunch of songs from straight ahead rockers (sting me, remedy, my morning song, no speak no slave, and hotel illness) to two of their greatest ballads (thorn in my pride, and bad luck blue eyes goodbye). Throughout the album both Rich Robinson and Marc Ford show tremendous chemistry playing together, feeding off one another's playing they deliver an album jam packed for guitarist. Chris Robinson is not to outdone by singing some of the most heartfelt and soulful lyrics in the Crowes catalog. Steve Gorman pounds the drums like a man possesed reminicent of John Bonham. The Crowes decide to end the album with the only cover the band has ever recorded on a studio release. "Time will tell" was penned by Rita Marley (wife of legend Bob Marley), it's an acoustic jam that gives this album a soulful closer after rocking hard on the previous songs. This truly is one of the best albums to come along in the 90's. The Black Crowes are one of the few things still right in rock and roll, and it's never been more evident than on this album. Very highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Available at retailers for about $18.......2006-12-21
Excellent collection - but there are re-sellers listed here that are selling this for as much $50 or $60. Yikes, most major retailers are selling this complete set for $18 - so beware.
A classic compilation.......2006-10-07
This collection is one of my most treasured possessions. (My father gave me the original 5-album set in the 70's when it was originally released on vinyl.)
This is the definitive collection of Scott Joplin's work. Richard Zimmerman provides wonderful performances that accurately reflect Joplin's intentions. (As evidence beyond my personal opinion, I submit the recent releases of digital recordings made from Joplin's piano rolls.)
A few points to consider regarding negative comments you may encounter in other reviews:
* This is a digital recording from an analog master. Lack of quality in the recording does not imply a lackluster performance.
* This is a complete collection. Some similarity is due to Joplin re-exploring melodic themes. But some is due to the fact that these are "rags". One might as well complain that all 50's doo-wop (or all 70's disco) sounds the same.
* Many pieces of the period exhibit formal musical structures, such as the marches of John Phillips Sousa. (Both Sousa and Joplin performed at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.) Actually, Joplin is responsible for extending the formal boundaries of ragtime to concert waltzes (Bethena) and opera (A Guest of Honor, Treemonisha)
* This is probably one of the few collections which will include selections from "Treemonisha". It is my understanding that after the initial release, one of Joplin's descendants made a copyright claim that was upheld in court. (I presume the issue was that Joplin had to finance "Treemonisha" himself, and therefore the customary performance clearances did not cover those selections.)
For ragtime students and enthusiasts, this is a "must-have" collection at a very affordable price.
A dis-service to Joplin.......2006-02-01
Sadly, the only virtue this set possesses is completeness.
The pianist does not play Joplin's pieces "as written", the piano is of poor quality, and not properly in tune.
This is emphatically NOT the set to buy. A far better set, beautifully annotated and well played on a good concert grand piano, is the complete works played by Guido Nielsen on the Basta Label.
This set is a dis-service to Joplin and his music. He deserves better, and gets it elsewhere.
Unique .......2004-10-19
I have several cd sets of Joplin's music: Rifkin, Arpo, Nielsen, and Zimmerman. All have their excellent qualities. What sets Zimmerman's set apart is the inclusion of excerpts from Joplin's opera, Treemonisha---especially "A Real Slow Drag." Why the other sets do not include excerpts from Treemonisha, I don't know---because they are some of his most beautiful and joyful pieces of music. Of course, you can hear the orchestrated version of Treemonisha in the Houston Grand Opera recording, and it is spectacular. But Zimmerman's piano version, especially of "A Real Slow Drag," is not to be missed.
Great set.......2001-10-16
I guess this will be a rather one sided review. I have been a fan of Scott Joplin since I first learned to play a piano.
I was shocked to see that one reviewer thought it all sounded the same. How silly. All of Frank Sinatra's music sounds like Frank Sinatra. All of Led Zeppelin sounds like Led Zeppelin. So, if the songs were drastically different, I would question if the same author composed them. As it is, though, each song on this set is fantastic!!
I don't know that I have heard of Richard Zimmerman, and I was a little leary as to what I would be getting, I certainly was impressed. Without a doubt the best renditions of "Weeping Willow" and "Bethena" I have heard, and at least a dozen songs I didn't know Joplin wrote.
Without a doubt, this album is fantastic. A very good price, as well.

Album Description
Led by the awesomely talented tenor Billy Williams, the Charioteers were the most gospel-sounding of the great black pop vocal groups of the '40s, a sound that did not translate into the record sales that Columbia record execseager for an answer to Decca's Ink Spotswere hoping for. But to ears educated by the doo wop and soul groups to come, this group's stuff is mighty fine, definitely vocal pop but hinting of the left turn towards R&B that vocal music was soon to take in the '50s. We are proud to present the *first-ever* compilation on CD of their work, with notes setting the scene for these 24 great sides. An extremely harmonious 'Collectors' Choice Music' exclusive!

Nostalgic group vocals from the big band era.......2004-12-22
A delightful collection of vocal tunes recorded between 1937-1948 by a gospel group gone pop, following very much in the footsteps of the Mills Brothers and Ink Spots. There's also a trace of hipster jive, ala Slim & Slam, on nonsense numbers such as "Calliope Jane," "The Mumble Song," and the hepcat novelty number, "Open, The Door Richard." The group excelled at slicked-up, sweetened versions of cover tunes, and had a big hit in 1940 with "So Long," one of many fine oldies included in this 24-song set, including '40s pop standards such as "We'll Meet Again," "I Got It Bad," and the like. It may take a while to settle in on this band's wavelength, which is closer to the corny sentiment of the sweet band era than to the postwar R&B scene which eventually displaced them. But for nostalgia fans, whether you like tricky harmonies or vocalese, or just dig the corniness of old-school showbiz, this is a really fun record. Recommended!

Death Metal/Grindcore Essential .......2007-02-14
Harmony Corruption was the first Napalm Death album I ever got into. I bought this album along with Fear,Emptiness,Despair about four years ago and I've been listening to both of them ever since, but Harmony Corruption was really the one Napalm Death album that really got me hooked to these death metal/grindcore legends. Not only is this one of their very best albums of all time, but it's also a death metal/grindcore essential as well. I believe this was also the first Napalm Death album with Barney Greenway on vocals. His growling vocals are extremely brutal and aggressive, and just fun to growl along to. The lyrics on this album is very intellengent and the song stuctures are very strong too. Jesse Pintado and Mitch Harris are very good guitarists. Their dualing grinding riffs are just heavy and brual throughout and they even throw some pretty good solos in for good measure. Shane Embury's bass is pretty good and flows well with the heavy riffs, and of course Mick Harris's drumming is just loud and beats you like a sledgehammer to your forehead. Every song on here kicks, but my favorites are "If The Truth Be Known", "The Chains That Bind Us", "Inner Incineration", "Vision Conquest", "Malicious Intent", "Circle of Hypocrisy", and "Unfit Earth" (featuring guest vocals from both Glen Benton of Deicide and John Tardy of Obituary). If you're a fan of Napalm Death, Death Metal, Grindcore, or you're just a fan of extreme brutal heavy music like me, by all means you must own this album. NAPALM DEATH RULES!!

1. Vision Conquest - 5/5

BLASTING!!!.......2006-05-08
Good song structures, very intelligent & socially aware lyrics, and it's a total guitar riff-fest! Fun to growl along with. A must for metal fans.
Mandatory grind/death metal album!!!.......2006-02-22
This is the best Napalm Death has to offer!!!! Incredible drums, chaotic guitar riffs and psycho vocals by Barney Greenway. Napalm Death is at thier peak here, also recommended "From enslavement to obliberation"
A necessary step... But a doomed step, it is........2005-07-28
This record marked Napalm's Death transition from a pioneer Grincore masters to a not-so-standard Death Metal 5-piece.
It is an important record because the band faced many inward - and outward pressures.
Napalm Death's classic line-up had just collapsed. Lee Dorian went on the form doomsters Cathedral. The joke at the time was that Dorian went from the fastest to the slowest band in the world. Bill Steer decided to stick with his original band, Carcass (he joined Napalm Death when Justin Broadrick exited to form Godflesh). It was good that he quit the band, because Napalm's songwriting was suffering. Just compare the "Mentally Murdered" EP with Carcass'es "Symphonies of Sickness", released on the same year (1989). The impression you get is that Steer's best songs went straight to Carcass.
So, the surving members, Mick Harris and Shane Embury, went on to recruit top talent from the scene. Jesse Pintado, from the defunct Terrorizer, coupled with Mitch Harris, from Righteous Pigs, two of the best Grindcore guitar players America had to offer. The third recruit, "Barney" Greenway, came straight from UK Death Metal upstarts Benediction. With this "stellar" - undergroundwise - new line-up, they released the controversial "Harmony Corruption" (1990).
But, why "controversial"?
It was deemed too "clinical", even by band members, and too many people accused them of "selling out". They even went to Morrisound Studios, to record with the infamous Scott Burns, which added some substance to the latter accusation.
But why such a carrer move?
Just a year prior Tampa Bay metal masters Morbid Angel and Obituary had released "Altars of Madness" and "Slowly We Rot", to great underground acclaim. In the same year Napalm Death released "Harmony Corruption", Deicide unleashed their debut, Entombed spewed forth "Left Hand Path" and Obituary released their sophomore effort, "Cause of Death".
Also, the "blast-beat-you-'til-your-ears-bleed" gimmick was already becoming stale... they just had to move on. So, all in all, "Harmony Corruption" was necessary, though doomed, release. They tried to ammend that with "Utopia Banished" (1992), which was faster and harder... but not necessarily better...
My suggestion? Stick to "Scum", "Death by Manipulation", "Fear Emptiness Despair" and all the records they're releasing nowdays!
The best..........2004-06-01
Album made by napalm death & my fav album by napalm death. Don't get me wrong i love all of their albums but harmony corruption tops any work napalm death ever did ! I hurt my neck while listinin to this whole album! Just buy it and dont ask why... You'll know once you have it!

More Like This, Please!.......2006-01-31
This is a splendid and much needed compilation of pioneering artists in the Southern Gospel field. For well-deserved kudos, I'll simply defer to laudatory comments posted below, though I might suggest this could have been formatted as a box set considering the wealth of excellent material from all groups involved. My only quibble: the booklet should have included dates and artistic personnel for each song. Valuable historical items such as this necessitate more in-depth documentation . Otherwise, this delightful disc brings a bygone and sadly missed era back to life.
Good introduction to a little-known musical style.......2005-01-22
The key to appreciating this album is the "history of" part in the title... Southern Gospel is a very particular subgenre of American music, with many fans who would take offense at it being considered a "country" style... In the years since its mid-20th Century heyday, Southern Gospel has become more of a mom'n'pop, DIY musical style, with hundreds of artists recording for self-owned or small independent labels, supported by a network of religiously-motivated fans. Modern Southern Gospel has a much mellower sound than the old stuff, incorporating the soft pop style of groups like the Carpenters, with electronic keyboards and modern production laid on top of the vocal harmony tradition the style was originally known for. This volume concentrates on the old stuff, with tracks by foundational artists such as the Blackwood Brothers, the Chuck Wagon Gang, the LeFevers and the Stamps Quartet, as well as some rarer, archival recordings by less well-known artists. (The legendary African-American gospel group the Golden Gate Quartet are included as well, showing their stylistic influence on their white counterparts, and hey, who am I to complain? They always sound good.) Still, this older version of the Southern style may seem a bit foreign to modern SG fans, especially since the genre's country roots are fairly plain... Southern Gospel is still a genre that honors tradition, however, and an archival collection like this should be much welcome among the faithful... it's also a fine introduction for anyone making the move from, say, bluegrass gospel into the more overtly devotional SG style.
(PS - the liner notes draw heavily on the authoritative book on the style, "Close Harmony," by Appalachian State University history professor James R. Goff... I imagine anyone who's really into the style will want to pick that book up as well...)
Fine introduction to Southern Gospel.......2004-12-02
Dualtone's reissue of this Crossroads Music compilation features fourteen Southern Gospel selections from 1920 through 1955. This project is an outgrowth of the academic studies of history professor James Goff at Appalachian State University, and his book of the same title. The recordings include well-known names like The LeFevre Trio, Stamps Quartet and Blackwood Brothers, as well as numerous lesser-known, but no less worthy artists.
For the most part these are vocal tracks with musical accompaniment. Unsurprising, given that the Southern Gospel music industry grew out of the need for songbook publishers and singing schools to advertise their wares via touring quartets. As radio and records began to dominate live performance as a means for hearing music, these gospel acts became stars apart from their initial sponsors.
This is an excellent introduction to the genre, with extensive introductory and song-by-song notes by Dr. Goff. The remastering, from a wide variety of source material, brings it all together into a pleasurable, cohesive disc.
Great survey of Southern Gospel.......2004-11-09
This is an excellent introduction to Southern Gospel music. Songs from the giants in the field - Statesmen, Blackwood Brothers - as well as more obscure groups - Rebels Quartet, Homeland Harmony Quartet. Good sound quality considering the age and obscurity of some of the selections. Highly recommended.
save money.......2004-10-03
This is the poorest quality CD I have evey purchased. Have to turn volumn up and down to listen. Not very enjoyable. Some of it sounds like recorded in a tunnel, or very far from artists. Will most likely never to it again.
