Customer Reviews:
You're never too young.......2006-10-28
Some stats: Decoryah 'Wisdom Floats' (1995) CD TT= 68:42 (printed lyrics included) 11 trks
Decoryah (Finland) put out 2 albums after signing up with Metal Blade records in 1994. This is their first. After their 2nd, 'Fall-Dark Waters' in 1996, they dropped off the radar screen, current whereabouts unknown. Too bad.
Decoryah shows great promise here. I was amazed when I observed the pix of the primary members on their second release. None of the members look older than teenagers (mid-teens at that)! In no way does it feel that the music is compromised by their apparent young age.
Decoryah is/was dead serious in their musical vision. Both albums treat the listener to somber, majestic, gothic-gloom metal (for lack of a better description). Depending on how exposed you are to this sub-genre(s), it in no way deters from this overall ambitious undertaking from 1995.
If there is any criticism perhaps it might be that their limitations of talent (i mean they are so young) could be weighed against the audacious scope of what they're attempting to create. I admit that this is a somewhat lame criticism.
I get weird vibes for example when I see on TV some child prodigy of 10yrs or so playing blues guitar (as well as singing the blues) better than most adults. You know the feeling..."that kid's gotta live the blues before I take him seriously, no matter how good". Well, that's the hump I had to overcome with Decoryah and I'm glad I did.
This music is very atmosheric and VERY melancholic, swirling through the tracks (never faster than mid-paced) with confidence and dare I say "grace". The 4 primary members use rhythum, acoustic, lead and bass guitars...and various drums and percussion. The vocals/narrations are clean song/spoken (somewhat buried in the mix), male mostly, and float from foreground to background. In many places the singing is not clearly heard if it were'nt for the printed lyrics, this is a downside to the album.
Throughout the music, roughly 60% instrumental passages intersperced with vox, several female vocalists add support to the male with etherial song and chorus also occasional cello, keyboards and grand piano. Nice melancholy effect. The cd length probably could trim down also. I know "not all who wander are lost"(Tolkien)...but some certainly appear to be.
This overall style is quite well done, and though I'm sure someone could find comparisons out there (much has come from Finland since 1995), I am really convinced they are/were on to a unique blend of style in the now overstuffed sub-genre of "gothic metal". Worth a listen with the samples provided here. Their 2nd release, 'Fall-Dark Waters' is the better of the two.
