An Oddly Transitional, Yet Solid, CD.......2007-06-09
Germany's power/thrash metal act Rage is one band that can't really be accused of being lazy. With a consistent stream of releases over the years, it seems as if the band relentlessly pumps out songs like a well disciplined factory crew. What's even more amazing is that the quality of their music is typically pretty good. Rage's "Reflections of a Shadow" was recorded during what was already their third lineup as a recording act since Peter "Peavy" Wagner formed Rage from the ashes of Avenger in the mid '80s. It was the third album from what many consider to be the definitive lineup of bassist/vocalist Wagner, guitarist Manni Schmidt, and drummer Chris Efthimiadis, and their fifth album overall.
While the band had previously experimented with keyboards as early as "Execution Guaranteed", "Reflections of a Shadow" saw the band use the instrument in a more dominant manner than before. For this reason, "Reflections of a Shadow" is sort of the red-headed stepchild of the band's discography, as it is somewhat more mainstream than the band's earlier, speed/thrash-oriented metal, and was also lighter than the albums which would follow. That's not to say that we're talking about emulating Bon Jovi here. There's still plenty of speed and power present, with fast-paced tracks such as "Wild Seed" and "Saddle the Wind". On the other hand, the pseudo-progressive metal of "Flowers That Fade In My Hand" and the anthemic "Faith" are layered with vocal harmonies and keyboards, while the title track has a bizarre synthesizer solo. Rage would abandon keyboards (instead sometimes using actual orchestral instruments as flavoring), until the last tracks of their album "End of All Days" about half a decade later. Despite the lack of respect this album gets, it's a pretty good album, albeit not as strong as their masterpiece of combined melody and aggression, "The Missing Link".
Aside from improved sound quality, what really makes the remastered version of "Reflections of a Shadow" stand out is the quality of the bonus tracks, in particular "Ashes", "Woman", and "What's Up". These are all incredibly strong songs, taken from their "Extended Power" EP released the year after "Reflections". You can really see the direction the band is headed, as Peavy uses a bit less high-pitched falsetto, and tightens up the songwriting. "Woman" is a great anti-war song, which almost feels like folk music in a way, but completely metallized. "Ashes" is a very catchy and straightforward metal tune, with a catchy chorus. "What's Up" is perhaps the biggest surprise, as an off-the-cuff, Joe Satriani-inspired instrumental. Once you've picked up the remasters of "Trapped!" and "The Missing Link", this should be your next stop.
Powerful Metal.......2007-01-15
It's amazing to think of just how long Rage has been issuing great heavy metal albums. 1990's Reflections of a Shadow is the band's 5th album, and they've released about a dozen since then. Yet they have remained mostly unnoticed, even by metal standards. It's a shame, because an album like Reflections of a Shadow should please all but the most extreme metal fans. It's uncompromisingly heavy, and bridges the gap between power metal and thrash with the same skill as bands like Angel Dust and Jag Panzer. It's not overly melodic, but it's not an all-out shred fest either. This is straightforward heavy metal with somewhat high-pitched vocals, and is reminiscent of bands like Helstar, Crimson Glory, and early Vicious Rumors.
Reflections of a Shadow is another in a long line of quality Rage albums, and is a great jumping-on point for new listeners.
Noise Records' 2002 reissue of Reflections of a Shadow is very impressive. You get digitally remastered sound, expanded liner notes, and the entire 5-song 1991 EP Extended Power as bonus tracks. All told, there are plenty of reasons to replace your old copy of this Rage album.

Great, but inconsistent.......2004-02-03
This album truly has some classic Rage songs (like Saddle the Wind, eg.). However, it also has a couple duds.
I have learned to like it over the years since I am a long-time Rage fan, and love all their idiosyncracies (and believe me, they have plenty). This album as a whole may grow on you as well, but I suggest owning it for the few gems it DOES contain.
I guess this would be the controversial album for the fans, but I think IT and RAGE themselves are very underappreciated. Check out their whole array of albums (and progression through the years). Definitely true pioneers of the power metal genre, with a little thrash thrown in with the earlier stuff.

Ketelbey lights up my life with music.......2004-08-31
On 5/14/03 I bought Ketelbey's Piano Music, volume 1, and have considered buying volume 2 twice. I don't know much about Rosemary Tuck except she does an excellent job bringing out the music heard in company with silent films. I may get a CD that has In a Persian Market next. This is worth a listen now and again when the now needs a lift.
