"What I Am," the leadoff track on Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, was a left-field hit off this Dallas band's debut album, and it remains about the only thing they're remembered for (excepting Brickell's eventual marriage to Paul Simon). But a good part of this album is quite listenable and stands up reasonably well to the years. "Love Like We Do," "Little Miss S." and "The Wheel" are basically equal to "What I Am" in their rhythmic and melodic pop appeal; "Air of December" and "She" allow the band's more jazz-oriented roots a little room to flourish, and the poignantly personal ballad "Circle" remains the best lyric Brickell has written. It was all downhill from here, but Shooting Rubberbands was an early peak worth revisiting. --Peter Blackstock

This album is a CLASSIC to many Edie fans........2007-07-08
I understand why some reviewers don't care for Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians, but to those of us that love them - "Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars" is a classic. Since I am not a musician, I cannot comment on the musicianship but, the lush lyrics and visual imagery are amazing. Edie Brickell paints pictures with her words and ethereal delivery and this is a particular talent that few singers accomplish. Furthermore, she sings with emotion which always connects with the audience and, if you have ever seen her live, you'll understand why she has a fervent following. Edie & The New Bohemians have a great chemistry together. I didn't care for her solo efforts as much - too much Paul Simon influence for my taste. Best of all, Edie has stayed true to herself despite the "One Hit Wonder" moniker. For true Edie fans, she was far more than a "One Hit Wonder" and she connects on a personal level.
Don't Believe the Hype!.......2007-02-22
I never cared for "What I Am," the only song I'd heard by her. But it seems like everywhere I go, I'm reading or hearing about how good this album is, and how talented she is. I had a good friend tell me that "What I Am" was actually the weakest song on the album, and the rest was great stuff.
I finally tried it and I gotta say... SHE SUCKS!! Every track after the first famous one sounds exactly the same, with her whining, flat voice grating in the exact same way. I've heard cats that sang better than this woman.
Ebay is my friend. This CD is no longer in my house.

Reconvening for a new studio project after a fifteen year hiatus can be a shortcut to a disappointing release (see: Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & the Fish, Poco, and way too many others). Edie Brickell and New Bohemians may actually be stronger now than they were with their late eighties and early nineties pair of hit albums. Brickell's lyrics mix a sense of serendipity with craftsmanship--in fact, the whole band pull off the difficult task of hiding formidable chops under casually friendly garb. Catchy hooks don't just happen, but the band's ability to roll them out without shining spotlights on them is laudable. The musical figure which opens and defines "Early Morning" shows their prowess at even ballad-paced grooves. Brickell's singing throughout is confident, capable of putting across everything from playfully dynamic playground melodies to dream-infused reveries. --David Greenberger
Album Description
Trailblazing combo Edie Brickell & New Bohemians have released their first studio recording in nearly 16 years. Stranger Things, a collection of 13 new songs, was produced by the band and Bryce Goggin, and features Brickell; original New Bohemians Brad Houser, Kenny Withrow, Brandon Aly, and John Bush; plus newly recruited keyboardist Carter Albrecht. This new recording represents the honest, unadulterated, and utterly charming sound of a longtime band just being itself, with tracks that include "One Last Time" and "Oh My Soul." Brickell calls this album a "true beginning," the one effort in which she and her original bandmates perform together as a bonafide group. "It's as close to the combo's live sound as a studio recording can get," she says.

Much more mature Edie.......2007-03-13
If you listen to this album and "Shooting rubberbands..." you can hear the maturity and richness in her voice. Excellant album!
Subtly beautiful and soulful.,.......2007-03-09
Edie Brickell & New Bohemians was a good band that was on the verge of becoming a great one when it suddenly disbanded after its sophomore effort "Ghost of a Dog" failed to achieve the same level of commercial success as its platinum-selling debut "Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars".
Though Edie made several attempts at forging a solo career via the slick sterility of "Picture Perfect Morning" as well as the subtle beauty of "Volcano", neither album quite captured the organic essence of the work that she did with her former group.
Unexpectedly, she reunited with New Bohemians in order to craft her latest outing "Stranger Things", and unlike the ensemble's independently released "The Live Montauk Sessions", the collection is a worthy follow-up to its early endeavors.
Granted, there are moments on "Stranger Things" when New Bohemians sounds a little tentative in its pursuits, which isn't a terribly surprising notion to consider, given that it's been 16 years since the band officially has issued a new album.
Nevertheless, tracks such as "No Dinero" and "Mainline Cherry" -- the former with its Afro-Cuban-kissed groove and the latter with its steamy, sexual aura -- feel fully realized, as if they've been road-tested to perfection.
Elsewhere, on "Long Lost Friend", the collective attempts to tap into the same punk-ish fury that propelled "Keep Coming Back", and although the song doesn't contain quite the same ferocity as its predecessor, it does inject an energetic punch into the latter half of the set.
For the most part, however, "Stranger Things" settles into a comfortably relaxed space that is poised at the crossroads where The Eagles, Blondie, the Grateful Dead, and '70s-style R&B meet. In fact, Edie Brickell & New Bohemians has never sounded more soulful, bluesy, or mature. Throughout the endeavor, Edie's pliant vocals commingle with Carter Albrecht's jazz-tinged piano interludes as well as Kenny Withrow's emotionally saturated guitar accompaniments, while bass player Brad Houser, drummer Brandon Aly, and percussionist John Bush ply the material with loose, freewheeling grooves. Tucked inside both "Oh My Soul" and the title track is a touch of the Rolling Stones, while the atmospheric arrangement of "Buffalo Ghost" transforms Brickell's awakened memories into spectres that lurk within each haunted wisp of slide guitar.
Though the surreal heaviness of the improvisational "Elephants and Ants" as well as the percolating rhythms and Southern rock textures of "Spanish Style Guitar" conclude the album on a high note, it's on "One Last Time" that the band fully hits its stride. As Brickell sings about a final effort to salvage a relationship that has gone sour, New Bohemians creates a warm, inviting atmosphere that perfectly frames the yearning in her voice, and the result is a song that ought to provide the ensemble with the perfect vehicle for retaking the pop charts.
Good as the old, good as new.......2007-01-03
This album from Edie and her Bohemians is right in the same fashion as the two from earlier days. It's good. Some songs are acually great, and Edie's vocals have improved. Some songs are not that great.
The style are very familier, but stil sounds fresh. The band has obviously played a lot the resent years, and sounds good and alive!
The circle (sorry...) is almost complete. The two originals are good and somewhat groundbreaking, the first solo is not that good, the Sessions from a few years back tells us about a new beginning, the solo Volcano fra Edie has a few fantastic new songs and this newest album from the group is right there with the old!
Recomended for fans and followers of well-written, emotialy deep and well played acoustic/electic pop/rock with a dash country!
huge fan.......2006-11-06
I recently went to the concert in Bearsville Theatre in Woodstock. I sang to all the old albums right up next to the stage. I couldn't wait to learn these new ones for the next concert.
Still Amazing After all these Years.......2006-10-27
It's been 16 years since we last saw a New Bohemians official release and it's really awesome. Edie took a good amount of time off to raise her kids and joined up with the boys when she went back home. I'm really glad that over the years they put together some great material to put out this new album.
Edie's voice is as great as ever and she's as beautiful as she was 16 years ago. Kenny still plays great on the guitar. Carter was a great addition to play keys and backup guitar. Great to see Brandon back on drums. John and Brad are great as well. Edie is great solo, but they are so much more as The New Bohemians.
The title track Stranger Things is a great way to start this one off. You can't go wrong with any of the songs. Spanish Style Guitar just rocks and the No Dinero adds a little southern flavor to the song. My favorite of the bunch in A Funny Thing. The album has a lot of different flavor as these songs have been written over the past 10 years I'm guessing. You really can't go wrong with this one.
If you like this one - I would suggest looking around for a copy of a cd called Live Montauk Sessions that was put out by the band back in 1999 or 2000. They have been back on the road and hopefully will spend some more time out in the next couple of years. great to see them back!

Bought for the hit single.......2007-01-04
When I purchased my IBM Thinkpad notebook PC many, many years ago, it had a sample A-V file which was the music video "Good Times". When I upgraded, I missed this song and ordered the CD which included it. I was pleasantly surprised to find gems such as track 11, "Like I Do Now". Most of the songs were more soulful (such as this one), instead of upbeat like the song I originally wanted, but it made for greast easy listening in the evening. Although not a chart-topper, it's a solid album.
Great for hardcore fans, bad as an overview.......2005-04-30
Presumably when you put together an "ultimate" collection, you want to gather at bare minimum every one of the band's singles since those are most likely to be the songs that the biggest percentage of the fanbase will know.
This collection is missing "Mama Help Me" from 2nd album "Ghost of a Dog". STRIKE ONE...
2nd single "Black and Blue" isn't here either. STRIKE TWO.
"Tomorrow Comes" was the single from Edie's 1st solo album "Picture Perfect Morning". STRIKE THREE...
Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians really were an album group more than a singles act, though, and that means aside from the handful of singles you'll want to use care in choosing the rest of the cuts to select their artistic, if not commercial, peaks. How is it that "Air of December" misses the cut from SHOOTING RUBBERBANDS...? "Nothing"? They chose "Woyaho" or "Stwisted" instead of "This Eye","Carmelito" or "10,000 Angels"from GHOST OF A DOG? And though it was wasted as a bonus cut on their debut, "I Do" is one of the band's most gorgeous moments.
For those reasons, I can't suggest this as an opener to casual fans or Edie newcowers...they're much better off purchasing SHOOTING RUBBERBANDS AT THE STARS(ASIN B000000OQW,the more accessible of the 2 band albums).
If, however, you already have the 1st 2 albums and want to fill in the gaps, this CD is perfect. This gets you out of needing to buy the NOBODY'S CHILD compilation (which is OK but not fantastic) to get "Big Day, Little Boat" or the BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY soundtrack for their cover of Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall", as well as the rarity "Zillionaire" previously only found on Rob Wasserman's TRIOS CD (To be fair, that one's a little more worth your time, particularly if you're a Brian Wilson fan. He does a great song "Bells of Madness/Fantasy is Reality" on there with his daughters..) Also you'll be spared buying Chris Botti's FIRST WISH just to grab the song "Like I Do Now".
But the motherlode here for Edie connoisseurs are the last 7 tracks, consisting of four songs recorded by Edie's post Bohemians band The Slip, and 4 recordings made after she'd left the Geffen label ("A Little Time","Boys In The Band","Baby" and a duet with Carter Albrecht on "Vodka").
BOTTOM LINE:
If you only know "What I Am" and "Circle", buy SHOOTING RUBBERBANDS AT THE STARS. If you're a big Edie fan already, get this for the unreleased material and rarities.
You will ultimately want to own this.......2005-04-29
Had The Slip been able to get a decent record contract and be able to make the music they wanted, I can't even imagine how much more my life would be touched by their incredible talent and emotional insight. Unfortunately, I only have a few songs to fill the void I'm so desperately craving to fill, but had I not been able to attain them my music collection would not be full. This is an awesome collection, not for the already-released songs (which, by the way, are not the best of choices, methinks - where's "Love Like We Do"? Plus many, many others that could have enhanced the CD, but I guess since I wasn't the producer that wasn't up to me), but for the previously unreleased tracks. Invisible Man is just absolutely wonderful. The New Bohemians went to an entirely new level in this song, representing a definite growth. This CD also highlights Edie Brickell's eye to detail and the nuances that make her idiosyncratic music so very prosaically beautiful. It took me awhile to warm up to this CD but I finally "got it" and now I'm addicted to even the most outwardly skeletal songs like Zillionaire, which, upon subsequents listenings, reveals the depth that Edie never fails to deliver.
Edie shines.......2005-04-10
I bought this CD for the last half of the songs. Now I can burn a CD with all of my personal favorites on it. All I had to do was get this CD, each of Edie's prior CD's, and the Flashback soundtrack (for the coolest version of "Walk on the Wild Side" ever).
So, if you're looking to expand your Edie/NB collection, then this CD is a great investment. By itself, I think it leaves out a few essentials - like Carmelito and Nothing and... oh, there are many fantastic songs. Too many for one CD, I'm sure.
Of special note is the appearance by Jerry Garcia, and the Slip songs, which are hard to come by elsewhere.
So, just go for it and add this one to your collection, you won't be sorry!
excellent.......2004-05-14
lovely, soul-stirring, and rocking sounds from a classic band that brought many elements together to great effect, indeed.

Most women sign up for university classes once they get the kids off to school. But not Edie Brickell. The quirky singer who led the Texas-based roots rock titans the New Bohemians to chart glory in 1990 with the slacker anthem "What I Am" is making another run at the charts with her first solo album in almost a decade. Married to Paul Simon for the past nine years, Brickell thankfully wasn't watching soap operas while raising her three children. Instead, she diligently studied acoustic guitar with Howard Morgen, penned more than a dozen new songs in the past two years, and then called up her Texas crony Charlie Sexton to produce her first album since her inconsistent, yet lyrically beautiful, Picture Perfect Morning back in 1994. Less frenetic and verbose than the stuff she did with the Bohemians, Volcano finds the singer collecting small, seemingly mundane moments and elevating them to a folksy profundity as she weaves her tales of restless, ill-starred, but proud women. The title track seethes with restlessness, and is underpinned with a gothic tension that recalls the young Bobbie Gentry on her smash hit "Ode to Billie Joe." Equally chilling, and just as poignant, is her sad tale of love and abandonment on "What Would You Do," showing Brickell's growing narrative talents. When she's not spinning her disturbing tales, Brickell is the consummate chanteuse as she recounts her courtship to Simon on the breathy and seductive "Once In A Blue Moon," or fogs up the windows in "More than Friends"--the thinking women's love song. --Jaan Uhelszki
Customer Reviews:
Awesome work from Edie Brickell and Charlie Sexton.......2007-02-14
This is a beautiful record. The sound engineering is just awesome.
The guitar work by Charlie Sexton is what carries the best tracks forward in a sweet, slow, no-hurry pace - like honey sliding off a stack of pancakes. Track 1, Rush Around, may fool you into thinking you picked a country record, but Edie shows her varied style and range as you proceed through tracks 3,4,5 and beyond. Favourite tracks are 4,5,7, and 12. Listen to these awesome songs and the guitar work and underlying baseline will blow you away.
Pleasantly surprised!.......2006-08-07
I had no idea Edie had slipped Volcano out until I saw Stranger Things on Amazon being advertised. The last thing I heard from her was the live EP Montauk Sessions that was available on the band website. So I found 2 gems at once and am overjoyed! The Montauk session songs are even scattered about the 2 latest albums in studio form. I have to say that I like the live version of Spanish Style Guitar much better than the studio recording. I can really appreciate Edie Brickell alone and with the New Bohemians. I find her solo stuff perfect for mellow, feel-good/feel-sad times and the band stuff perfect for bringing out a more firey Edie. She is full of passion in both settings and her voice is superb. I hope they continue to produce fantastic work together and alone!!!
Understated Beauty.......2006-07-23
Every now and then, I read reviews of CD's that have been out for a while, and decide that I need to make a comment. Some folks seem to think that when an artist changes their creative direction and even their basic style and/or subject matter (for whatever reason; marriage to another prominent musician, children, etc.), they have "sold out" for commercial success, or even worse, that they have betrayed their fan base. When Joni Mitchell came out with her heavily synthesized, and extremely political DOG EAT DOG, one could practically hear the collective screams of her longtime fans around the world. The critics were merciless (PLEASE, Joni, go back to writing love songs)! Although, in retrospect, DOG EAT DOG is not one of Joni's most enduring works, it paved the way for a new artistic direction, and some of her late period masterpieces like NIGHT RIDE HOME and TURBULENT INDIGO combined social and political commentary with the more intimate, confessional qualities she had been known for. VOLCANO has not been pulverized by the critics in the way that DOG EAT DOG was, but there has been lots of dismay expressed by those who wanted Edie Brickell to remain as she was, a cool bohemian with a major streak of eccentricity, qualities she seems to have traded in for domestic bliss (a sort of reversal of what happened with Mitchell). One reviewer here feels no passion in Brickell's new music. Here's were I beg to differ; this music takes small, everyday subject matter and converts it to poetry. The singing and the musicianship are at once tight and relaxed. This is a very neat record that contains little hidden moments of reflection and revelation to be discovered upon repeated listening. I really liked PICTURE PERFECT morning (and seem to part with majority opinion on that one), but this later CD is more immediate and raw, and at the same time, more polished and sophisticated. I can't wait to hear the results of her upcoming reunion the New Bohemians, and I have little doubt that what she has learned as a solo performer will only enhance her new group work.
Another great album.......2005-07-27
I'll keep this review short- Edie never fails! This album is peaceful and beautiful; I've had the album since its release and still listen to it several times a week. Love #5, "Once in a Blue Moon."
For Fans.......2005-05-09
While this CD is not likely to convert any new listeners, it should please Edie's fans. Much like her previous solo release "Picture Perfect Morning", this is at times subtle and gorgeous. This is the type of record that some might dismiss on first listen as boring or too laid back. But repeated listens reward the listener as the musical gems emerge. I will admit a slight bit of disappointment that her music didn't continue in the direction hinted at on "Ultimate", but this is still a pleasant, enjoyable companion to "Picture".
Here's hoping that her next release doesn't take a decade and that she teams up again with the Bohemians for a dose of extra energy.

Customer Reviews:
This album grows...and grows.... and GROWS on you!!!.......2007-07-08
"Ghost of a Dog" is the kind of album that you're not sure about at first, but the more you listen the better it gets. This is always a good sign since with many albums "familiarity breeds contempt". I agree that a couple of the songs sound a bit childish, but this is somewhat the essence of "in tune with her inner child" Edie. It is this quality that makes the other songs like "He Said" and particularly, "Stwisted" so poignant and compelling. For anyone who has ever been broken-hearted, these particular songs leave a lump in the throat. The musicianship complements Edie's delivery style perfectly. If you like music with some substance and emotional authenticity, then you'll appreciate this effort.
For God's sake Edie, call these guys up and make another album already!.......2007-05-22
It's fairly hard to believe that this album only received tepid reviews when it was released - as a long time musician (drums), I can honestly say that this album has some fantastic group playing and the studio players behind Edie gel together wonderfully. There is also some great slide guitar work, excellent bass playing, and the production values are first-rate. This album is also a drumming tour-de-force, courtesy of one Mr. Matt Chamberlain (previously the house drummer for Saturday Night Live.) If you are a student of the drums, grab this immediately and hear a master at work. His drum sound is also incredible and I love the way that the drums on "Mama" are actually mixed to mono except for a single floor tom hit near the beginning of the last verse - genius. Listen also to how Matt and the bass player drive the groove during "Carmelito" by playing the downbeats together - I almost get goosebumps just thinking about it. How in the hell can any so-called music lover listen to this stuff and not like it?
I also think some of you other reviewers are too polite - this album actually blows "Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars" completely out of the water, as that album and it's pop sensibilities only hinted at the wonders which await here. This is a serious and determined effort and deserves a much better fate than the one it received.
Complaints? Yeah - the acoustic numbers aren't exactly earth-shattering (hence the 4 stars, I'd actually rate this 4 1/2 stars if I could) but ALL of the electric numbers are worthy of your attention. "Stwisted", in particular, is one of the most heartbreaking tales of lost love that I've ever heard and believe me, Edie certainly did not phone in her vocal track here. Stunning stuff.
So Edie, if you happen to read this (yeah right), you've created a wonderful album here and I'm sure that there are MANY of us out here who would love to hear a follow-up 17 years later.
I mean, I own about 2,500 CDs and still manage to play this at least a few times a year - it must be doing something right!
masterpiece!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-13
This 2nd effort by this band is unbelievable! I was lucky enough to see this tour in new britain ct. years ago and it was an experience! This cd does not have a filler song on it and I cant believe the great price! This cd is the best deal on amazon if you like music!! Unfortunatlly after this its down hill for edie and the B. But I will say this, a great artist needs a great band to put out great music and not just good music, except for Tori of course!! Here is something created that most bands can not accomplish and that is giving their 100% and creating a masterpiece!
Ghost of a group.......2005-07-30
Edie Brickell & New Bohemians had a left field hit with their debut CD - 1988's double platinum "Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars" and its catchy Top 10 single, "What I Am." Their refurbished hippie sound was pretty refreshing in the age of Tiffany and Debbie Gibson, and the band seemed destined to become a major rock act. Their second CD, 1990's "Ghost of a Dog," was eagerly anticipated, but it ended up flopping and Edie Brickell became a one-hit wonder. This status is largely unjustified, though, as the second CD is probably better than "Shooting Rubberbands."
"Ghost of a Dog" commences with the bluesy "Mama Help Me;" for Edie, it's a fairly blistering vocal with its repeated refrain: Mama, mama, mama, mama help me/ Mama, mama, mama tell me what to do. Many of the songs are extremely catchy, particularly "Black & Blue" and "Carmelito." The lovely "This Eye" is another highlight. However, "Ghost of a Dog" is the type of CD that sounds good when on it's on, but fades from memory quickly. I notice that I can rarely remember songs from the CD. In addition, the group gets a bit too hippy-dippy at times, such as on "Woyaho," with insipid lyrics like, "Red dog riding in the back of a pickup truck." Likewise, the brief (1:28) "Oak Cliff Bra" is a song that I loved initially, but it seems silly and insubstantial now.
This CD is ultimately more enjoyable than their debut - most of the songs are strong melodically and the entire CD is quite cohesive. However, without a breakout song, the CD just couldn't and still cannot match up with "Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars." I like the CD, but it's ultimately somewhat forgettable.
A wonderful album that most have ignored.......2005-04-30
This album got nearly no notice at time of release critically or commercially yet it still remains one I pull out a lot. While it's a bit of a step back from "Shooting Rubberbands...", it's really only a sophomore slump in sales terms..the album was still a fine artistic effort that holds up well today. This album finds the band stretching out a bit from the sound of the first album adding Tex-Mex flavors, a touch of bluesy slide here and there, and a few songs stripped so bare they're more folk than folk-rock.
HIGHLIGHTS:
"Mama Help Me" starts things off with bluesy swagger incorporating roadhouse piano and some stinging slide guitar accents. "Carmelito" is an Old West tale of adultery and murdery that sounds somewhat reminiscent of Los Lobos' more Tex-Mex moments thanks to guest Jo-el Sonnier's accordion. "10,000 Angels" is a plea for a partner's support in a time of decision ("10,000 demons are scratchin' at my feet/tearing at my soul/ripping apart my belief/10,000 angels are flying overhead/circling the ceiling/reaching down onto my bed/I said "Come to me, I really want you"/"Come to me, I really need you now") The spare title tune appears to be a veiled metaphor for a couple's hidden demons they don't want to face ("How can that dog be/scratchin' at the back door/We ran over him years ago") "Woyaho" is a fluffy song for the road complete with singalong hook. "This Eye" examines our tendencies to want to 'win the battle' of daily argument instead of the war to keep love alive. The album closes strong with the spare "Me by the Sea" where Edie says she's glad no one's there with her but "man, I wish I had a hand to hold". There's a lovely part that SOUNDS like bagpipes that I'm assuming is processed electric guitar since there's no mention of bagpipes in the liners.
LOWS:
"Oak Cliff Bra" is far too cutesy for its own good. It's nearly children's music. "Forgiven" is somewhat tepid lyrically, though musically it's one of their bigger departures. The menacing guitar bed is quite unlike anything else on the disc.
BOTTOM LINE:
While the low spots make this not as good as the debut, it's close. If you bought "Shooting Rubberbands..." and liked it, you'll love this one as well.

Picture Perfect Listening.......2007-06-08
Another wonderful offering from Edie Brickell. If you're a fan, you'll want to enjoy it often. She never fails to please. And it's always a pleasure to have the bonus of Paul Simon along for a part of the ride.
A Comforting Voice.......2007-03-20
If you've ever heard a song by Edie Brickell then you know how comforting her voice is. This is one of HER best CDs. My favorite song is "Green" - each song has a story to tell and will make you smile. It's a great cd to listen to as you relax or even lay on the beach. Make sure to add this cd to your collection!
When Smokey Sings..........2006-01-07
I have listened to the song "Good Times" a million times, and I can't stop thinking it's Smokey Robinson. Listen to the long "goodbye" as she sings "I don't wanna say goodbye", and the way she sings the word "little" in "I want a little more".
But, as I say, I have listened to it a million times. The whole album is good, but this one song is worth the price of entry.
The lady with the great voice continues to dazzle.......2005-11-21
Edie Brickell has a voice that is hard to describe. It can be cutting an edgy at times, but here on this record its soothing and seems to gel perfectly with the music in each of the songs. While this alblum may lack a # 1 smash single, it is a very likeable record with nearly all of the songs being quite easy to listen to. Starting with the jump start of "Tommorrow Comes" and ending with the playful "Lost in the Moment" this record continues to showcase Brickell as a steady force in women's pop rock. Hard Times, Green, and When the Lights Go Down are just a few of the fine tracks here. A record you can enjoy listening to multiple times with ease..without having to constantly press skip on your disc changer!
Picture Perfect Imagery.......2005-01-25
Edie Brickell has proven she can combine the prosaic with the inspirational, and make rejuvenating even the most haunting lyrics. Her voice is wonderful and her intuition with lyrics is subtly brilliant. A very relaxing CD, but one that makes you listen carefully more than once.

hypnotic,supersonic, bubonic, chronic........2006-08-26
That's the best way to describe this glorious assault on the senses by one of the few new(er) bands doing it right and that is by having fun doing it. Based in one of the great music cities in the world Chicago and fresh off the Lollapalooza '06 this band is wasting no time going there. Vocalist Angela Mullenhour is a presence onstage engulfing the microphone as she destroys her guitar all the while smiling and even giggling like a little kid at their own b-day party. The rest of the band blast sensory melting passion from the stage in much the same way. Think Sonic Youth guitar walls, Bjorky vocals but much dreamier and soulful and drums that lift you up and down through the bipolarism of it all. Throw in a little 80'epic soundscapes and a little punk for fun and you have one of the best Psych Pop/Rock bands in the biz. See them live buy the album. Catch this train while the seats are cheap. I know this is a lot of hype for a band you probably just heard of for the first time and I know I only gave this album four stars but I know for a fact the next album will be five which in my opinion is a perfect rating.
This is the album you'll wish you had bought in 2005.......2005-11-26
I am immensely grateful that I heard about this record through word of mouth. Sybris channels all of the textures of late 80s and 90s guitar rock - Daydream Nation-era Sonic Youth, Superchunk, the Pixies, Lush, to name a few - with singer Angela Mullenhour's voice drawling, yelping and howling above those textures. With so many changes in sound, volume and rhythm in the songs, audio clips have a hard time of doing the band justice. However, just a few bars of Mullenhour's voice should give you a sense of its power as well as the creativity of the lyrics.
With so many guitar-oriented bands sounding an amalgam of 1980s British rock, Sybris is making original music that is unafraid of its previous influences while still joyfully and powerfully innovative. If Sybris maintains their momentum from this debut, their next record will be incredible. And you'll be so happy that someone turned you on to their first record.

Product Description
Edie is both enlightenment and instinct spirit and animal and this dichotomy dances its interplay throughout her music. Edie was born Edith Pijpers in The Netherlands. She enjoyed a suburban, non-musical upbringing nearby Rotterdam. At the age of 19, she left her country to go travel the world. First stop: Paris. She modeled for a living and perfected her French. Second stop: Sydney, Australia. Edie kept modeling to earn a living as well as having a day gig in a local cafe. Her desire to sing and write music had quietly grown inside, while listening to a lot of music and finding incredible inspiration and support from it. Barely aged 21, she left Sydney for Los Angeles. She bought her first guitar, learned a few chords and started writing. Her songs were [and in a lot of ways still are] simple, almost childlike, yet very non-predictable and highly original. Mostly they were and are dynamic with a lot of emotion, reminiscent of early Sinead O'Connor or Kate Bush. Her music over the years has been described as Joni Mitchell meets Garbage, Jeff Buckley meets Portishead. Her live-performances are brooding, intense, joyful and full of raw emotion. She met writer/producer Martin Motola at her first ever live-performance at Highland Grounds in Hollywood and the two started writing and recording together. In 2001 her debut album "Shades" was completed and released in dependently. In 2003 she moved to Nashville, where she released her second album "Nu" which is a collection of recordings from her basement in Amsterdam, the home-studio in LA and the newly formed set-up in Nashville. Co-produced again by Martin Motola. She now plays on a regular basis in Nashville and surroundings. She's toured extensively in the Mid-West, NYC and the South-East. "It is not often that in a first encounter with new talent the feeling comes over me that this is something special... Edie is such an exception, in her music lies universal worth...The image of an original and inventi
