    5 out of 5 stars A treat: Grimethorpe pleases once again........1999-12-09

    This CD is wonderful. The band once again demonstrates incredible versatility and technical skill along with great arrangements. As a low brass player, I was especially impressed with the euphonium interpretation of Carnival of Venice on the Carnival Cocktail cut. Loved the Riverdance arrangement and always find good circus marches played well to be a real treat (Barnum & Bailey's Favorite, in this case). Other cuts were equally entertaining and satisfying. Great cornet virtuoso work on From the Shores of the Mighty Pacific and a lovely arrangement for tenor horn on The Lark in the Clear Air. A brass band that can be subtle or bold! A brass band that understands dynamics! A brass band that lets you hear more than just the melody line! Note to the band: a CD of KL King and other circus greats would be appreciated. And, being from Maine, USA, more RB Hall marches would go down well. Yes, he was from Maine, but also wrote great marches. Hall's great countermelody style was well interpreted on the Brassed Off CD and the same march, Death or Glory, appears here. How about more?

    Some find German metal a bit too Teutonic. But when it's this furious who cares. The first four tracks will pretty much take your head off and put it back on again for you. Sure, it may be facing the wrong way but at least that way you'll be able to see the licence plate of the truck that just ran over you!

    Riding the Storm, Renegade - this is great metal. Sure by side two (in the old terminology) some of it gets a little unhinged but Bad to the Bone which was the lead single is a bit hard to go past. And don't forget to read the lyrics too as with this band they can sometimes add to the fun.

    Running Wild didn't make many good albums - but don't let anybody tell you they didn't make at least one. And here it is!

    5 out of 5 stars An essential German metal release.......2004-11-18

    Running Wild's last two releases were good, but this release is just plain amazing! When it comes to quality German speed metal, you can't get much better than this. Amazing riffs, blazing fast guitars, and tight drums all aided by the wonderful vocals of Rock 'N' Rolf. It seems with each release the band keeps getting better and better making this arguably their best album. Thats arguably because Black Hand Inn and Masquarade are also contenders for that postion. One of the best, if not the best track, has to be the opener Riding the Storm with its haunting intro. The guitar work is just superb proving that Rolf is easily one of the most underrated guitarists in the genre. The track Bad to the Bone also porduced the bands second and last music video. The tour was also one of the bands most successful and they even recorded one of their shows for home video release. You haven't seen how good Rolf and the gang are until you have seen them playing these complex guitar structures live! If the album weren't great enough alone, the new remastered version also contains the entire Wild Animal EP as bonus tracks. For die-hard fans its a must because the Wild Animal EP up till this point was almost impossible to find. One song that was included on that EP was a remake of the silly metal anthem Chains & Leather, a song in its original form appeared on the bands sophmore album Branded & Exiled.

    4 out of 5 stars A piece of R.W history........2001-08-14

    DEATH OR GLORY :

    This is Running Wild the year 1989 before the formation got their modern/sensational line up during the period 1992-98. Back in 89' there was ( besides the frontman Rolf ) ; Jens Becker , Majk Moti and drummer Ian Finlay.

    The songs are not as complex and fast as R.W:s later albums ( Masquerade,BHI or Pile of Skulls ) and the production is not 100 % flawless , but on the other side not bad either. Production and mixing are tending to sound a little hollow and I am sure that the album would have got a radical improvement regarding clarity and bass depth if Rolf Kasparek himself would arrange the production - which is the case on the later R.W albums.

    Those of you who have heard R.W:s wellknown speedmetal-like drum-sound from the abovementioned albums should be warned ; the drumming by Ian Finlay on DOG is good - but not anywhere near the wizardry of Jörg Michaels thunderspeeding drum attacks on Masquerade or BHI.

    In spite of these factors DOG is still a tremendous R.W-album ; The catchiness and melodic elements of these songs will bring great enjoyment to all you who appreciate european powermetal. Great riffing and singing throughout ( almost ) all the record. The only objections from my point of view would be the tracks " Renegade " and " Bad to the Boone ". Albeit having interesting lyrics both are some notches below R.W:s capabilities in terms of melody and energy. On DOG you also will find R.W:s most wellknown singalong anthem ever - " Riding the Storm ". This particular tune will literally take you by storm ( no joke intended ). When the pre-corus and refrain comes blasting you will feel a uncontrolable urge to raise your voice in participation. Other hightlights include " Running Blood " , " Marooned " ( mighty man bass choir will make you shiver ..... ) and the epic arrangement of " Battle of Waterloo ". Rolfs voice is enjoyable - even if his singing has improved notably during the R.W-albums of the 90's. The backing vocals are also very well sung and powerful , especially on " Riding.... " and "Marooned". As the songtitles indicate ; this is another of R.W:s pirate-lyrical compositions describing naval battles, rumdrinking seadogs and flaghoisting shipmates. Those of us who listen to R.W for that reason will love it. If you by chance feel that songtexts should reflect love relations, or party hedonism you should avoid this exciting CD and buy something less dramatical ( preferrably the horrid music from Poison or Aerosmith ) By this I must oppose against the older review below. To say that the lyrics are less than serious is not correct , they are very serious. This is proven by the fact that R.W have not left their "sea romancing" style beginning on their older albums from the late 80's and up until today ( with exception of their latest CD " The Victory " - which is a rather untypical R.W performance in many ways and has created a lot of mixed emotions among the older fans. )

    If someone really think that sentimental texts belongs within the tradition of power metal ( which they do not ! ) he would disagree with me. Otherwise there is no choice but to commend Rolf and his squad for this impressing effort. Many of the songs are clearly designed in the vein of typical R.W powermetal with a ability to invade your head and memory because of their incredible catchiness and melodic drive. If you have not heard R.W before and really want to play it safe I would recommed you to begin your acquaintance with the hanseatic pirates ( they hail from the north german town Hamburg ) in Running Wild through their creme de la creme / masterpieces : Pile of Skulls or Masquerade. That does not mean that DOG is anything other than great - it is regardless a very wellwritten and pleasing piece of power metal in the classical german style.

    This album was a pleasant surprise. This band is very tight and very melodic. They don't seem to have high art in mind, but they have a lot of fun writing concise power/ heavy rock songs. And the fun atmosphere truly comes through. Not deep by any stretch of the imagination, but a great, almost guilty, pleasure.

    It's well-known that Roy Harper was left by his wife before the writing and recording of this album, and it certainly shows in the mood and subject matter of the songs. However, this isn't simply a mopey self-pity party. Harper is a true artist, and even when dealing with emotional relationship trauma he doesn't provide the stock, trite response that most musicians tend to churn out like they don't even care. Yes, Death or Glory is Roy's painful recoil in response to being burned badly by a catastrophe in his life, but he's still Roy, and there's much more to this album than sad love songs. The genuine emotion imbued in these songs because of Roy's state at the time of writing them lends this album a truly unique place in his astoundingly good catalogue and it's one of his very best records in the last 30 years.

    The album opens with the torrential title track. In 2006, the production does sound a tiny bit off--Harper has favored a plugged-in acoustic sound since the mid 80's. I really prefer the sound of a miked acoustic since it sounds more natural, and the plugged-in sound bothered me at first, but has since really grown on me (probably because the writing is so good). Roy's equally-talented son Nick backs him up with some wicked lead guitar. This song has some great energy and rocks pretty hard for an acoustic-powered tune. I really love the poem excerpt in the middle. "The War Came Home Tonight" has some great political commentary that is oh-so relevant today. "Duty" is probably my very favorite of Roy's spoken-word pieces--compelling art. "Next to Me" has some awesome fingerstyle guitar that we've all come to expect from Roy.

    "The Tallest Tree" and "Miles Remains," both tribute songs, are two of the album's most classic tracks. "Tree" was written for Chico Mendes, the Brazilian environmental activist. It's a great, positive, upbeat number with some great acoustic lead by Nick. "Miles Remains" is a genre-defying tribute to Miles Davis. Spacey and mostly instrumental, "Miles Remains" is a live favorite and a great use of space as music. "The Fourth World" is my favorite track of the album. It's a scathing indictment of the powers that be that's pulled off as only Roy could. Nick's acoustic lead cuts like a blade, and Roy's lyrics and fiery singing cut even deeper. The version on this CD includes better drums. Even though it's acoustic, this song rocks, and it rocks hard. "One More Tomorrow" is one of the most heartfelt and sad songs on the album, really summing up Roy's emotional state in a touching way.

    A couple tracks don't stand as far out as others--"Evening Star" and "On Summer Day" aren't as musically interesting (although the lyrics are typically strong). "The Methane Zone" is really the only track that's not that great--the guitar sound just doesn't fit, and the lyric isn't quite as funny as many of Roy's earlier intentional throwaways.

    Overall, though, this album is another Roy Harper classic. The singing is heartfelt and unique, the backing is tight and sometimes blazing, and the poetic writing is beautiful and worthy of much analysis. [...]This album is highly recommended as one of his best 90's recordings alongside Once. Hope you check it out!

    The Black Dyke Mills Band is superb and I enjoyed their selection of marches which included two of my favorite composers (Hermann Blankenburg and Robert Browne Hall) I would have preferred a couple more of Hall's marches (maybe Officer of the Day and another) and a couple less of Rimmer's. A great recording.

          The tracks by British oi band, The Last Resort, are true classics, but I was irritated and bored with Combat 84. For those buying their first Last Resort album, "Skinhead Anthems" is a much wiser choice.

          If you havent listened to it by now you have been leading a hollow miserable existence.Two classic Oi! albums that will be enjoyed by all right minded lads (and birds). Get your hair cut!
