5 out of 5 stars Well Produced Technical Thrash!.......2007-04-03

Much better produced and a shining example of the uncharted (and, unfortunately, unnoticed) path to technicality-without-pomposity that Coronor was soon traveling, 1989's No More Color is a great stop-gap to the near-perfection of Mental Vortex. "Die By My Hand" is a absolutely killer opener leading into a treasure trove of monster riffs that does not let up for the rest of the album. An essential thrash document from a band you've probably never heard of but most likely will never forget.

5 out of 5 stars Life is Full of injustice.......2007-03-25

Back in the eighties the critics loved them, fellow musicians raved about them, they were called the Rush of thrash and they blew away bands like Slayer and Metallica. It never helped them achieve the following they deserved. If they do have any form of a cult following it would be based around Tommy T Baron's sensational guitar work which by the way reaches it's apex on this album. It's progressive it's technical but it's catchy it has songs that generally clock in around 4 minutes. Coroner is exemplified by the song D.O.A absolutely stunning stuff. Music lovers know a metal band has never been as underated as Coroner.

5 out of 5 stars not a live album.......2006-03-05

i think its important to mention that this is not a live album.here on amazon they have it labeled no more color (live).i almost did'nt order it because of this.anyway i must say this is my favorite coroner album.it has the dark sound of their earlier stuff & is more technical than a lot of what came after it.the best of a great band!!

3 out of 5 stars A tight album.......2005-12-16

Comprised of eight tracks, No More Color--the third full-length album from Coroner--was released in 1989. The material is in a metal musical direction with progressive leanings. I find the musicianship to be accomplished, the songwriting to be solid, and the sound quality to be satisfying. When it comes to the guitar work, Tommy T. Baron does not displease; his playing is proficient, and his solos are precise and smooth. I think that Ron Royce is a distinctive, likeable vocalist. The drumming from Marquis Marky is skillful. The group's musical arrangements and the compositions' shifting tempos are also enjoyable. My favorite cuts are "Read My Scars," "Tunnel of Pain," and "Last Entertainment." The energy-filled "Read My Scars" sports nice guitar riffs from Baron and a hard-driving, pleasing refrain--Marky's bass drum work on the refrain is magnetic. The kinetic "Tunnel of Pain" is invigorating, while the well-crafted, lively "Last Entertainment" is memorable; this track contains an interesting-sounding keyboard line, gratifying guitar work from Baron, and a spoken word recitation from Marky. The CD booklet includes most of the song lyrics, and the back of the CD jewel case displays a photo of the band. The CD is just over 34 minutes. This is a recommendable album.

4 out of 5 stars Important musicians.......2005-01-08

This album is a very underrated and very good effort by a band that in the late 80 s was part of a massive arrival of new bands into the music market in North America and the rest of the world.

I remember another good band that impressed me at that time and was Nuclear assault. Brilliant musicians.

Anyhow, this album is a very good follow up to Punishment for decadence which is a masterpiece. In No more color, the band further explores and deepens their yet excellent heavy sound.

Objectively speaking, the brilliance in this album comes in side two. I say this because I purchased the vynil back in 1989 or 90. Mistress of Deception, Tunnel of pain and Last entertainment are musical heaven. And that s what most of us look for = )

5 out of 5 stars The essential Mountain Goats album.......2007-07-04

For new listeners to the Mountain Goats, an important thing to understand is that there are two distinct Mountain Goat eras. The first is often called "lo-fi." These include such albums as Sweden, All Hail West Texas, Zipolte Machine, and collections like Ghana. Most of these albums are recorded on a boom box, with John Darnielle solo on vocal and guitar, and the occasional accompaniment of one or two other artists. The second era is the studio era initiated with Tallahassee, growing in complexity with We Shall All Be Healed, and reaching its artistic pinnacle with The Sunset Tree. Straddling these two eras stands "The Coroner's Gambit."

On Gambit, John has reached full maturity as a lyricist. Songs such as The Alphonse Mambo, Baboon, and Family Happiness show a depth of imagery and complexity of emotions that rival those of the Sunset Tree. And, it's difficult to listen to Trick Mirror without concluding that this song is as much about his abusive childhood as the Sunset Tree song Up The Wolves.

Musically, the stark folk sound of his early albums is giving way to the rock tracks of later works. Jaipur, the lead track, is full of punk rock energy, yet full of religious images that raise it above standard pop fair into the realm of the profound. Yet, most of the tracks on this album are recorded on a boom box, and the raw, low-fi sound gives this album an urgency and immediacy that his later, more polished work never quite captures.

For a glimpse of the best of both Mountain Goat eras, and as a fine, stand alone work dealing with death and loss, Coroner's Gambit is, I think, the essential Mountain Goats album.

5 out of 5 stars GutShotRecord.......2007-01-12

My first taste of TMG ie. John Darnielle, I can't stop listening to this. John and his often manic acoustic guitar alone, very occasional sweet fiddle and little else. If Sinatra had put as much anger, love, longing and living into his performances he would have made it big. Lo-fi, recorded on a worn out boombox, there are moments here that are absolutely transcendant, a few times when John's (already broken) voice breaks I'm sure that he is weeping. Songs that are explosive, songs that are bitterly tender. Great song-writing and gutshot execution, this is a man with a muse. Tired of over-produced? Try unproduced.

4 out of 5 stars great album, good place to start for the uninitiated.......2006-08-28

The Mountain Goats have put out an overwhelming amount of material, but I think this album shows all the strengths better than any of the others I've heard. Excellent songwriting and lo-fi production that is still clear enough not to be distracting. Anyone curious about this band would do well to start right here.

5 out of 5 stars i can't get it out of my CD player.......2005-11-30

i have been listening to this CD for about a month now, and that is really rare for me. I mean i have not even taken it out of the CD player. I am confident if one gives this CD a few good listens, there is no way that person will ever regret purchasing it.

4 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2003-06-05

Do you know who these guys are? Well first off its pretty much just one guy, John Darnielle. And he is a legend. He has recorded over 300 songs and scores of albums. His prolific song bank includes songs of love lost and found, songs of travel and adventure and songs of tragedy and hope.

Are all the songs true accounts? No. But that doesn't make them any less compelling.

This album would be hard pressed to be called his best but definitely is not a bad starting spot, though i would personally recommend All Hail West Texas.

If you have ever wondered what is up with this Low Fi nonsense this is the man to teach you your lessons. He shows the true spirit of the content quality in place of prduction quality tilt that makes Low Fi the fabulous genre it has become.

4 out of 5 stars Moving on from death metal to something different..........2006-03-14

On "Punishment for Decadence", Coroner move beyond the largely rote stylings of their initial release, "RIP", the guttural rasps of Ron Royce notwithstanding. Many songs on the record focus on neoclassical guitar riffs, arpeggios, and stylings that are reminiscent of perhaps what Vinnie Moore or Tony MacAlpine would sound like if they were also really into super-fast tempos, abrupt shifts in mood and feel, and lyrics pondering the misery of drug addiction ("Skeleton on your shoulder"), the type of decadent conformity that can destroy societies ("Sudden Fall"), or the murder of some mysterious politician who had "ulterior motives" ("Masked Jackal").

This is probably the second-best Coroner recording, after "No More Color" (although "Mental Vortex", for its superior production, would probably also get some votes). Coroner never sounded much like the American thrash or death metal of the time; rapid fire scales replaced riffs, and while there are portions where the double bass drum is pounding and everything is cranked there's a certain mournful quality to the slow riffs of "Sudden Fall" or the acoustic intro to "Skeleton On Your Shoulder" that has more emotional depth than much of the competing European thrash of the time period (ie, Destruction, Kreator). You probably won't hear a better guitarist than Tommy Baron for his mixing of jazz, metal, and pyrotechnics; "Marquis Marky" (Marky Edelmann) wrote some fairly obscure lyrics, and Royce belted them out. A very loud band with a lot of thought behind it.

    3 out of 5 stars A worthy album.......2005-12-14

Punishment for Decadence, Coroner's second full-length album, was released in 1988. It has ten tracks. Of these ten tracks, two are instrumentals and one is a cover tune, "Purple Haze" from Jimi Hendrix. The album's material is in a metal musical direction with progressive leanings. Altogether, the songwriting is worthy, the musicianship is proficient, and the sound quality is satisfying. The guitar playing of Tommy T. Baron is accomplished; also, I am impressed with the meticulousness and fluidity of his solos. Ron Royce's vocals are distinctive and likeable, while Marquis Marky's drumming is impeccable. The band's creative musical arrangements and the shifting tempos of the compositions are impressive, too. "Masked Jackal," "Skeleton on Your Shoulder," and "Sudden Fall" are examples of tracks that I enjoy. Baron makes his mark on the memorable, well-structured "Masked Jackal"--he provides a gratifying guitar solo and magnetic rhythm guitar work. Indelible guitar riffs are supplied by him on "Skeleton on Your Shoulder." "Sudden Fall" furnishes a chorus that is enjoyable and pleasing rhythm guitar playing from Baron. The CD booklet includes the song lyrics. In addition, an illustration of the group is displayed on the back of the CD jewel case. The disc is almost 39 minutes. This concise, urgent-sounding album is recommendable.

5 out of 5 stars Great band, Great album!.......2004-01-10

Coroner was a trash band, from the middle 80's to the beginning of the 90's. They released five albums, and I consider "Punishment for Decadence" to be their masterpiece.

Coroner delivers a sofisticated old-school trash metal, very technical and heavy, combining lots of different riffs and tempos, and melodic solos with classic influences, with a "raw sound", like old Metallica or Tankard. The music is catchy and perfeclty assembled, with different rhythms...What caught me most of the band is their originality and capability to create such a great chaos! =)I have really no comparisons to give you an idea. If you like trash metal, you should get into Coroner, and "Punishment for Decadence" is a must...and so is their discography. Coroner, a band that trascends time with this great album; and so their discography. Too bad they split up...Anyway, don't miss "Punishment for decadence"...

PS: Check out J.Hendrix's cover, "Purple Haze"...

    4 out of 5 stars Thrash virtuosity!.......2003-04-10

Coroner deliver their second record of technical thrash. Tommy Baron's guitar style is characterized by sweeping arpeggios combined with a jazz influenced rhythm section. Baron really squeezes in every note he can in his OTT shred style. I think this band influenced Nocturnus and Cynic both. Great late 80's thrash for fans of amazing guitar work. Maybe like a super-tech Slayer.

5 out of 5 stars Coroner Hits All The Right Notes .......2007-04-03

The hardest Coroner album for me to find is also my personal favorite. This one has the best production, strangest lyrics, and outstanding production (although the vocals seem a bit buried in the mix. The only weak track is the cover of the Beatles' "I Want You (She's So Heavy) which, if not great, is at least tolerable (unlike the "Purple Haze cover on Punishment For Decadence). A definite easy (and intelligent) choice for the new-to-Coroner listener.

4 out of 5 stars A group ahead of their time / Buy it!.......2005-08-09

I bot this as a "cut out" cd for 2.00. Its funny how those end up being some of your favorite cd's. A very dark/speedy/intense metal album. Its a cd that could be released today and still be very vital. I believe these guys were from Germany, had some success but broke up. You cant go wrong with any band that was on the NOISE label originally. If you like Celtic Frost, you'll love these guys.

5 out of 5 stars Heavy and fast, while maturing.......2005-03-22

Mental Vortex was much of an album where you saw Coroner mature in their sound a bit, while retaining their characteristic chaos and heaviness. Very dark, which is independent of the heaviness. The album is mysterious and intelligent and spoke of the direction they were going in with polishing their sound.

One of the finest albums of the genre, while being a group that hasn't been matched since.

5 out of 5 stars Mental Vortex : Pure Brilliance.............2003-04-20

I've been a Coroner fan since 1989. I remember the first time I saw Coroner on Headbangers Ball, and I was immidiately drawn to their sound. I love all of their releases, and highly recommend all of them to any fan of Speed/Death/ and Thrash Metal...

If you've never heard Coroner, you're in for a real treat. The only words to really describe Coroner's sound is "unique", "dark", "fast as lightning", "very deep"....

They don't sound like anybody else IMO, but they are brutal power at it's very best. They are all very talented, and perfectionist musicians. Guitarist T. Baron is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. His riffs are blazing fast, and he plays some of the most impressive soaring/flying leads I've ever heard. He is without question an axe master....

Metal Vortex is without question Coroner's finest hour. It's very polished, and very well written. There is not one single filler here either. All of the songs on Mental Vortex have a very powerful, and lasting impression. Drummer M. Marky lays down some of his very best lyrics here too. It's a dark ride through the gates of hell and back IMO. They really did some excellent work here, and it's truly a masterpiece in every way.....

If I had to classify this, and compare it to another band, I couldn't really. I'll just say that it's one of the best CD's I own, and I've got 1000's......

I snaged this in an ORIGINAL VERSION, brand new in the cd long box..remember those?? has huge artwork!!

Man I have had this for what seem's like for ever now, such intellegent METAL..make's exodus sound like the 3rd grade bully's they are!! read the word's to ''MAKSED JACKAL'' to get a glimpse into my mind set!!

The music is top notch TECH/PROGRESSIVE and really sound's like nothing else you will ever hear!!

CORONER WAS one of the best undergroud band's that lived, their album cover's alone can cripple you and bring you down just with the thought of them, they are so HAUNTING!!

If there ever was a ''cult'' band CORONER was it!!!

A TIMELESS ALBUM!!!!! BUY TODAY AND BECOME A NEW PERSON!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Tight As A Drum........2003-01-31

I was lucky enough to see Coroner the one and only time these Swiss metal legands toured in America, in Support of Nuclear Assault. They were one of the tightest bands I have ever seen; so powerful, so in control of their music. They sounded amazing. And this, their 2nd, lp is a true classic. Progressive speed metal at it's very best. Own this.

    4 out of 5 stars Coroner : Pure Punishment!!!.......2002-07-03

    At last!!!....About time!!!

I was a huge Coroner fan back when this was released. These guys are fast and furious. It's a mix between Speed/Death/Thrash/ Techincal Metal. Not many people have ever even heard of Coroner, but finally Amazon has made this CD available. THANK YOU!!!

The three members of Coroner had more talent than most five member bands. Guitarist T. Barron is lightning fast, and also plays with a melodic approach at times. The whole thing comes together to form a "in your face" onslaught of power....

"Punishment" may not be the best Coroner release to date, but it's very refreshing if your looking for something quite different than your normal Metal sound. It's very unique in a scary sort of way.....

I prefer "No More Color", and "Mental Vortex" over "Punishment", but they aren't available yet on CD.

"Punishment" is still very good, and it's great to see this out again. I just bought it, and I can't wait to hear it again. Coroner has an underground fan base around the world, and with the re-birth of Metal today, Coroner should not be overlooked....

Check them out if you dare!!!

    5 out of 5 stars AT LAST.......2002-06-30

...I would suggest you [buy this] asap, because this is one [great] band. Highly underrated and coming from Switzarland (just like Iced Earth before, and possibly Red Sun Project in the future)
Playing trash with noticable prog influences this is not usual death/trash metal. Vocals (done by bass player) are growls but the music is amazing all the time. Technically great with heavy riffs, a guitar player that can easily take on Darrel, and the 50lbs drummer who's pounding on double base non-stop is something that you do not want to miss. I personally prefer thier two last albums (Mental vortex, Grin), but there is nothing wrong with these before (Punshiment..., No more color). Too bad they've disbanded.
Music should not be described with words, so I wont try to do that, just a friendly advice: get this as soon as possible, and listen to it. Over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Intense Speed and Skill.......1999-05-05

3 out of 5 stars A satisfying piece of work.......2005-12-12

R.I.P. is Coroner's first full-length album. It was released in 1987. There are 13 tracks; five of these are instrumentals. The material is in a metal musical direction with progressive leanings. I am impressed with the creativeness of the band's musical arrangements--also, I like the shifting tempos of the songs. I find the songwriting to be solid, the musicianship to be proficient, and the sound quality to be satisfying. Ron Royce is a distinctive vocalist who gets the job done. Tommy T. Baron is an accomplished guitarist whose soloing is meticulous and fluid. In addition, Marquis Marky's drumming is impeccable. Examples of compositions that I enjoy are "Intro," "Reborn Through Hell," "When Angels Die," "Intro (Nosferatu)," "Nosferatu," "R.I.P.," "Fried Alive," and "Totentanz." "Intro" is an attractive instrumental with nice keyboard work. The invigorating "Reborn Through Hell" supplies indelible guitar riffs from Baron. The propelling "When Angels Die" provides background vocals that are engaging and memorable. The instrumental "Intro (Nosferatu)" contains pleasing guitar work from Baron. The nicely crafted instrumental "Nosferatu" is a worthy showcase for Baron's guitar playing prowess. The lively "R.I.P." sports a remarkable-sounding bass guitar line from Royce. "Fried Alive" features a gratifying main guitar riff from Baron, and "Totentanz" exhibits another nice guitar riff from him. As for the CD insert, the song lyrics are not contained, but there is an individual black-and-white photo of each member of the group and a black-and-white drawing included. A color illustration is displayed on the back of the CD jewel case. The disc is 45 minutes. This is a recommendable album.

    5 out of 5 stars Coroner : "R.I.P"........IT RIPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-06-26

I've been a long time Coroner fan. I remember watching "Headbangers Ball" one night back in the mid/late 80's, and catching Coroners' "Masked Jackal" video. It completely blew me away....

Since then, I've been a huge fan, as you can probably already tell by just looking at my username.

This is Coroners' debut release, and it totally RIPS!!!!!

For a three man outfit, Coroner blends Death Metal / Thrash / and Speed Metal all into one brilliantly produced release. This isn't my favorite Coroner however, that would go to the epic "Mental Vortex" IMO. "RIP" is probably the fastest Coroner release, and maybe the most brutal. It's hard to describe who they sound like because they don't sound like anyone but Coroner.

This is a very good place to start also. They didn't really ever change their sound or style, so basically any Coroner release will lead you in the same direction. I consider Coroner one of the most talented, and most inspiring Death Metal bands ever. The music Coroner produced in the 80's, still sounds very fresh now {2003}, compared to some of the top performers of today like Opeth....

This was one highly talented group of musicians, and unfortunately, they never gained the respect they deserved in the States. I think once you hear Coroner, you'll understand why I like these guys as much as I do. They were way ahead of their time IMO, and to this day, even at 33 years of age, I still listen to Coroner on a regular basis....

    UP THE IRONS!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Sounds like 'Iron Maiden goes death metal'...Brilliant!.......2003-04-17

When I heard the song "Spiral Dreams" for the first time on a radio show, I really thought it was Iron Maiden with Bruce Dickinson singing in a growling, death metal fashion. All the elements that IM has (fast bass riffs, thin guitar sound, twin lead breaks) are right here. This is a great album. Its rawness will appeal to the old-school headbangers out there. Very cool. My only gripe about this album is that most tracks are kinda similar. Perhaps another IM trend? My picks are "Reborn Through Hell", "Coma" and "Fried Alive". Don't let the titles fool you, though, this is a very interesting mix of Iron Maiden's NWOBHM musical style with some thrash thrown in for kicks. Fans of Iron Maiden will love the musical similarity, and fans of thrash metal will love it for the lyrical content and solid musicianship.

5 out of 5 stars European Thrash to the Max!.......2003-04-11

Have you ever wondered "what if Yngwie Malmsteen played Lead Guitar for Slayer circa 1987"?
Well, Coroner's RIP is it. Yet this album is original enough for it's own merit.
Coroner is probally the most under-rated band in Thrash metal history, and RIP is the first of an amazing succession of records that evolved in songwriting and production with each new release.
I can not begin to describe how technically breathtaking the music of RIP is executed, and how heavy the experience of listening to it can be.
After I die, I want this album to be played at my funeral!
