1 out of 5 stars Why can't I give this a zero!.......2007-06-18

Great if you like a fast drum beat and drinking at the same pub everyday. Also great if like anything out of Chicago. Not good if like variety.

5 out of 5 stars As good a Irish Punk Album as I have ever heard!.......2007-06-11

My love for Irish punk/folk started with Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys and eventually to the Pogues. In my search to find another, the Tossers stood out. This is probably their best album. The depth and emotion of the writing of "Shade" and "Not alone" just grabs you by the throat and demands all your energy to soak it in. "Never Enough", "Did it all for you" and "Claddagh" are also excellent. The Tossers just pull you in, where the line is blurred between musical entertainment and soul awakening. I am probably outside their core demographic audience at 42, but I find the intense, honest lyrics coupled with the ferocity and rawness of the delivery is as good as any in the genre.

5 out of 5 stars Best Tossers Yet.......2007-06-06

As a lover of most all Irish Rock music I have to say that this offering from the Tossers is one of the best. Each song has that Irish edge and these guys seem to deliver it better than the others. I find it more consistent quality wise than their earlier recordings, yet still has the edge that makes the Tossers fun, yet poignant to listen to.

3 out of 5 stars Support your local Tosser........2007-05-23

I love the Tossers. This wasn't one of their better albums but it still rocked. The singles were good and all but I felt that the rest of their work was far better than this album. But still I would buy it if I were you and into Celtic rock. ROCK!

4 out of 5 stars The Tossers, not just another Celtic band........2007-05-13

This CD is loads of fun and perfect for parties. While the lead singer's voice is not that great, the music, and the other musicians, more than make up for it. The band also has a keen and correct sense of current political corruption. If you love Irish music and alternative rock (used to be punk), and love edgy political (and social) messages, then this Band is for you. They impart more energy than a sack of electric eels.

Album Description

For the past nine years or, to be more precise, since the opening tones of their sensational debut album, Legendary Tales, Rhapsody have been one of the most unusual phenomena of the current metal scene. The huge range of their creativity, the number of legendary compositions that the Italian band, with their primary members guitarist Luca Turilli and keyboarder Alex Staropoli, have released so far is legendary and will now be topped with their new album, Triumph & Agony.

Due to copyright and trademark issues the band formerly known as Rhapsody has changed its name to Rhapsody Of Fire. The band members consider this a great new start, reflecting the emboldened and increasingly grandiose direction that their music has taken. Â"The Power of the Dragonflame will burn brighter than ever before,Â" says guitarist/songwriter Luca Turilli. Keyboardist/songwriter Alex Staropoli adds, Â"The name Rhapsody Of Fire better represents the energy that has always been present in this band and its music.Â"

Rhapsody Of Fire will continue to explore musical fantasy worlds with the precision musicianship and unique symphonic concepts that their fans have come to expect and adore. Fresh on the heels of the bandÂ's first live album release, Live In Canada 2005 - The Dark Secret, a new name and renewed vigor ensure that Rhapsody Of Fire still hold the passion and power that have always been associated with their music.

5 out of 5 stars Luca Truli made it again.......2007-07-25

I am a great fan of Rhapsody and Luca Trulli. I think that their albums are must-to-have albums for metal fans, especiallt metal-fans from 80s. This album is a follow-up album and has the highest quality and energy. I have been listening this album since the last four months from the first song until the last song as I would listen the album for the first time. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars a HUGE disapointment.......2007-06-25

this made me cry. rhapsody went so downhill on this cd. they even fall out of the powermetal category. dont buy this cd. if you really wanna hear it download it. its not worth the money. if you want real rhapsody buy dawn of victory, or power of the dragonflame.

2 out of 5 stars I am just not that impressed or entertained by their latest studio effort.......2007-02-15

I was first introduced to the symphonic power metallers formerly known as Rhapsody (name changed due to copyright issues) on their 2006 live album Live in Canada. I have to say that I am just not that impressed or entertained by their latest studio effort. The group tends to rely more or the theatrical elements rather than focusing on their metal music. The vocals tend to be oversung, or drowned out by the chaos in the background. Rather than enhancing your metal experience with musical theatrical elements, Rhapsody of Fire puts you to sleep with them. The group does stay true to their fantasy themes however.

5 out of 5 stars not power-metal, BUT SYMPHONIC metal!.......2007-02-04

I just love this album not much speed as previous ones but melodies, AWESOME production, storylines[lyrics], the guitars are awesome too an excellent album. So, guys don't be afraid of change!

3 out of 5 stars Honest review here! .......2007-01-08

First of all, I can not believe the people that gave this cd 5 stars do not work for for Rhapsody!!! While I do think this is a very good cd, it is not a good power metal cd. There is virtually no speed at all, only a little in the first couple songs. There are a lot of good slower, mid paced songs, but I can't pick out any specific songs that I would skip to. This is definately a cd that you need to listen to all the way through to appreciate. For long time Rhapsody fans, I think this can be an enjoyable cd. For new fans, this is not the place to start, get one of the earlier releases(Symphony of Enchanted Lands, if you don't already have it.). By the way, avoid Luca Turilli's Dreamquest cd at all costs!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great import from Germany.......2007-05-20

Bought this CD based on the All We Are video back in the late 80's. Doro is hot and has the best heavy metal female voice around. She puts Lita Ford to shame. Every song has a great riff to it. Love it and I'm trying to buy the earlier Warlock CDs to compliment this one. Gotta have more Doro.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome release.......2006-05-18

Warlock made one truly great album in their time and this is it. Forget the earlier stuff, this is where you should start to explore this band, who were before their time in a number of ways.

It's a pity that for this album the band jettisoned their previous long time guitarist Peter Szigeti and had enlisted a couple of North American chaps into the band as this will perhaps diminish it's worth in some eyes. But that would be a pity as it's an excellent, excellent release. Those who flick through my other reviews will note that it's rare for me to give an album five stars but this one deserves it.

A track by track synopsis would be;

All We Are: A real soccer holler crowd effect lets you know this is still Warlock as this is an effect they'd used previously. The track is a great opening cut and a good statement of intent.

Three Minute Warning: This is true metal. What in the 90's and beyond started to be termed power metal. This album does represent the completion of the ideas of the previous album, in terms of it being a serious assault on the charts and the the hard rock scene of the late 80's, but the band could still pull out some serious metal. Doro goes off over a solid metal stomper.

I Rule the Ruins: A more melodic slow cruiser with great vocal lines and melody. The production values on this album are really top notch, sounding like it was recorded yesterday and this helps the band go up and down the gears.

Kiss of Death: More atmospherics with somewhat creepy overtones, but that was on purpose it would seem. A sense of danger and foreboding beyond the ken of many bands at the time who just went for over the top viciousness. Here Warlock uses intelligent lyrics and arrangements to better effect that just going over the top.

Make Time for Love: Ballad #1 for this album. Which is a bit of a respite after you've been clubbed by the first four tunes.

East Meets West: This song gels perfectly. A simple idea lyrically married to an excellent hook. Other reviewers have noted the excellent contribution to this album by one Tommy B on guitar and I'd have to concur. The guys in the band as a unit seem able to play melody or face melting metal with equal aplomb.

Touch of Evil: Another out and out metal track here. Doro coaxing all sorts of banshee wails out of her larynx. The whole thing proceeds to a crescendo of chaos (in the best possible way) that is just slightly reminiscent of the Scorpions tune Virgin Killer - ie the end bit where Klaus Meine really lets go into the upper end of his register.

Metal Tango: A metal track in Tango time. It's the arrangement rather than the fairly simple lyrics that make this track work. Following a full metal racket like Touch of Evil with this tune was excellent track sequencing.

Cold, Cold World: This is almost a ballad, but if you wanted to put it into that category you'd have to call it one of the most bleak ballads out there. Over a slightly understated musical delivery Doro belts out in angst at the injustices of the world rather than plaintively whining about it. An interesting combination.

Fur Immer: Doros solo albums show a penchant for songs performed in her native German. To my knowledge this is the first time she did it. This track must be huge in Germany presumably and despite most of the planet can't understand it's lyrics it's always exhumed for Warlock and/or Doro compilation albums. Which is a pointer towards the effect it has on the listener.

Overall if your a fan of metal, buy this. If your into the wave of female fronted metal acts then buy this. If you love clean crisp guitar heavy hard rock, by this. If your into 80's metal and hard rock, then pick this up. It something that lovers of so many types of metal can enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2006-03-26

Warlock is definetly an underrated band! there's so much good stuff on this cd when i heard it I thought this was too good for my ears to hear!! Doro Pesch is THE best female vocalist ever and she's perfect for metal and the sexy woman can kick butt! there's absolutely no filler on this record - FLAWLESS

5 out of 5 stars Warlock ended their partnership on a high note.......2005-12-21

What's the 4-1-1?
Warlock started out in 1983 and released their first album Burning Witches a year later. The group was instantly compared to such heavy metal peers as Iron Maiden, Dio, Accept, and Judas Priest. In just four short years together, the group fronted by German vocalist Doro Pesch turned out four albums before calling it quits. Triumph and Agony was their final release together and it was probably their mot cohesive. The album starts off with the commanding rock anthem "All We Are". The groups doesn't hesitate to turn the energy and volume levels up to eleven as Doro belts out the resounding chorus with such power and melody.

Furious vocals and hard-charging rhythms propel "Three Minute Warning" into a heavy metal meltdown. "I Rule the Ruins" is a play on words that really implies that Doro rules the bedroom. Who am I to argue with her? She's backed-up by some great chugga-chugga riffs and wailing guitar solos. "Make Time for Love" is a somber ballad that centers in on Pesch's vocal abilities. The addition of piano helps add to the emotional level. "East Meets West" could pass for a war charge anthem. Only Doro could make "Metal Tango" sound so cool with her assuring and convincing delivery.

Warlock put the finally nail in their career with the ever-enduring ballad "Fur Immer". I have no clue what most of it means, but it sure is jarring and sad. That might have something to do with the warm strings and drum combination that makes up the music part of it. Doro Pesch went on to a successful solo career that continues to this day. I have no idea what happened to the rest of the group.

The Verdict
Warlock ended their partnership on a high note that left heavy metal fans with an instant classic.

1 out of 5 stars 1 Star for Dora Peach.......2005-10-07

Hey people I read all your reviews and you forget to mention the very talented work of Mr. Tommy Bolan who really made this album what it was. Dora after not being able to handle the credit to Mr. Bolan promply fired him after the European tour and she sunk like the hag (HACK) she truly was.
People think about it Warlock was nothing before T and A and was nothing after.

5 out of 5 stars Another World.......2007-03-29

Biber heartily embraced gypsy tavern violin virtuosity long before Dvorak or Brahms. This is magnificent music full of elegant and earthy contrasts. The sonatas that employ unconventional tuning open up new worlds of harmonic splendour, yet the crowning piece, the Passagalia, which does employ conventional tuning but isn't part of the Mystery Sonatas, is thankfully included as the final work of a two disc journey that soars the heights of heaven and plunges the depths of human experience. I have the original release of this music with its sumptuous and informative booklet: booklet or not, these are exceptional performances combined with an exceptional recording.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another forgotten musical genius. Beautiful music.......2007-03-04

Heinrich Ignaz von Biber was a wonderful composer. The so-called "Mystery Sonatas" also known as the "Rosary Sonatas" have an aire of perfection rarely seen in classical baroque music. Biber has been all too conveniently forgotten and I am not sure why. As with Erik Satie (another of my favorite, yet unknown composers) Biber has managed to shrink in to the darkness of history while his legacy of work should be celebrated.
His work is haunting, exhilarating, enriching and somber. His music conveys a sadness and a joy that few musical works are able to convey. Biber's understanding of orchestration, the workings of instruments in compliment of each other, is astonishing to me. He had an ability, a gift, that only God himself could have given him. If you don't believe in God, then just accept that he was a prodigy of the finest degree and his work was sent from a deep place inside that immediately crawls inside of you. I, personally, call it a religious musical experience.
Absolutely stunning music.

5 out of 5 stars A Monument of Early Violin Music.......2006-12-17

This version of Biber's stupendous ROSARY SONATAS (this is the more correct translation of the original German title) is marked first of all by the stunning virtuosity and graceful lyricism of violinist John Holloway. Simply to master the notes of these sonatas is an immense task in itself: playing scordatura is sort of like ventriloquism, since you are miming a certain set of notes while other notes are sounding. To have worked up these difficult pieces into an intensely expressive, dramatic experience, as Holloway has, is breathtaking. Then there is the variety of continuo instruments arrayed for each sonata. In various tracks we hear organ, harp, lute, violone, lirone (a gamba viol sounding to these ears somewhat like a harmonica) and regal (a small, portable organ with a rasping, nasal sound, used to great effect in the "Crowning with Thorns" sonata). Finally, the fact that this recording is priced far lower than any of the other major versions (Goebbel, Manze) makes it doubly attractive. I was disappointed by the scarcity of program notes, understandable given the budget price: we are not informed, for example, of the scordatura tuning of the individual sonatas, and I would have liked a more detailed discussion of the pictorial and symbolic elements used by Biber in the sonatas. However, the notes include a link to Virgin's website promising "a more detailed introduction".

Perhaps it's best not to take in this colossal work all at once. For a sampler, try tracks 14-15 of CD 2 (the "Assumption" sonata) and hear some of the most buoyant, joyous violin playing in existence. You'll be instantly mesmerized.

5 out of 5 stars An Inordinately Beautiful Recording of the Biber Mystery Sonatas.......2006-09-22

Much can be written about the difficulty of this music form the 17th Century by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber - and other reviewers here have given superb descriptions of those complexities - but the end result of works such as this is in the response it produces in the listener.

Biber wrote these Mystery Sonatas to represent the three sets of mysteries from the Bible: the Birth, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection of Christ. The recording is by Tragicomedia with Davitt Moroney and John Holloway in this impeccably performed recording of impossible music: the music is impossibly difficult to play and impossible not to draw and emotional response from the listener. Some may find this version a bit dry sounding, but for this listener that only enhances the other-worldly sense of the music.

The sixteen sonatas are named as follows: Part I: The Annunciation, The Visitation, The Nativity, The Presentation, The Finding in the Temple Part II: The Agony in the Garden, The Scourging of Jesus, The Crowing of Jesus with Thorns, Jesus carries His Cross, The Crucifixion Part III: The Resurrection, The Ascension, The Descent of the Holy Ghost, The Assumption of our Lady, The Crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Passacaglia. With the simplest combination of instruments Biber was able to elicit the feelings of each of these mysteries.

For those who love Period Music this recording is a complete success and a treasure to own. For those who have yet to step into this ethereal world, this is a very fine beginning. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, September 06

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful Baroque fare.......2004-02-23

I own three versions of Biber's Mystery (Rosary) Sonatas, and a fourth recording (by Manze) of other Biber sonatas along with the famous passacaglia that concludes the set. All of the versions (the other two being by Rheinhard Goebel on Archiv and Suzanne Lautenbacher on VOX) are beautiful, because the music is. Perhaps the passacaglia is the most beautiful 8 to 12 minutes (depending on performer) in the entire musical library. I rate the Holloway version as the best in terms of the passacaglia. The pacing seems perfect (Goebel is fast and almost dancelike, Manze quite slow but with more flare) and is about the same as that of Lautenbacher, the latter being performed on a modern instrument with her usual good taste and limited vibrato. Certainly the Holloway version has the most delicious ending to the passacaglia, when the minor key resolves to a major that brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. The Goebel and Manze versions both have a decorative flourish on the final note that, while beautiful, detracts in my opinion from the simple beauty of the key resolution. How two reviewers could give this recording only a single star is beyond comprehension! Even if one grants that Moroney is not as "lively" a harpsichordist as the performers on the other versions, my response is, "So what?" Maybe if you're a harspichord fanatic you drop the ranking from five stars to four, but the work is overwhelmingly a violin piece with harpsichord ACCOMPANIMENT. To downgrade the ranking of the entire recording to one star completely ignores the fantastic beauty, technical perfection, and haunting introspection of Holloway's performance on the violin. Besides, it's not as if Moroney actually is "incompetent." The descrition I would use is "tastefully understated, recognizing that this is primarily a violin recording." In contrast to the fun Goebel version and the good but more yeoman (yeoperson?) Lautenbacher version, Mr. Holloway plays with greater sensitivity but still with plenty of guts (not referring to the strings here) when drama or a discordant double-stop are called for. Again, ALL of the versions I've heard are great, and I'm tempted to buy yet another, but I always recommend the Holloway to my friends.

5 out of 5 stars Keith Caputo, a Lou Reed for a New Generation.......2005-07-12

Caputo's voice just haunts you even when the CD is just sitting there in its case; the CD vibrates slightly with the insane emotion he manages to pour out of what is technically a very slight voice with little or no range. Some other singers have had this amazing luck--people like Leonard Cohen for example. But Caputo has it in spades and THE RIVER RUNS RED must be his masterpiece. It's just so crazy.

The little spoken word intermissions, named after the days of the week, should have tipped you off from the beginning that you were getting your head into some pretty deep water. So often our bands just deliver straight music and never bother to think about all the other things (just ambient noise for example, or taped conversations, or just background sounds) that might be recorded and listeners might find some meaning in. Take Lou Reed delivering the uber-odd METAL MACHINE MUSIC literally banging instruments through the studio viz fuzzy feedback and still managing to capture the soul of an era even without melody. Life Of Agony updates some of these ideas casually, as though they weren't revolutionary the way they come out on RIVER RUNS RED. Listening close you get the whole back story of our hero. He's not a bad kid, he's just misunderstood--by his family, by his girl, by his teachers and friends and people at work. Or then, as you start to suspect, maybe he IS a bad kid.

At any rate he thinks so. The incendiary lyrics of "Bad Seed," to my mind the killer cut on the LP, make that very clear. Caputo sounds bemused by his own powers; it's as though a miracle had happened and he had finally traced his lineage back to some unnameable evil. Horrible, but at least you know where you are (ask Scott Evil in the Austin Powers movies, who's like the big screen equivalent of Life of Agony.)

5 out of 5 stars the real LOA........2005-06-21

rrr is incredible. it really does portray the agony that keith had to deal with as a kid. i love the heaviness of the album. alan robert plays power chords on the bass to give the songs that extra chunky feel. it makes the riffs that much heavier. this time, underground, words and music, river runs red, through and through, and the stain remains make this album. hell they are all kick a** songs. if you've never heard loa. buy this album. it's loa the way they were meant to be. the next album "ugly" is pretty heavy, but keith changes his vocal style. he sounds like a wuss. by the time soul searching sun came out, keith had gone really soft. he sings like a complete wuss. ovewrall the album is not heavy at all and is a disgrace to the music world. buy river runs red.

2 out of 5 stars title of review.......2005-06-14

I'm a bit puzzled by this album being considered hardcore. This is just weak grunge metal. If you want to listen to music like this you'd be much better served by picking up Alice In Chains' Dirt, Metallica's Self-titled, and Type O Negative's Slow Deep And Hard. This album is nothing more than a second rate amalgam of those albums.

4 out of 5 stars The ONLY great CD from LOA.......2005-04-27

This CD was the best CD they released. Straight ahead hardcore and unrelenting. They turned into a more melodic straight forward rock band which put off alot of diehard fans. This CD and the first Crowbar CD are the highlight releases for 2003.

    2 out of 5 stars redux.......2007-07-06

Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!

    3 out of 5 stars Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20

I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.

This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.

2 out of 5 stars POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20

The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

5 out of 5 stars Varèse Sarabande à son meilleur!.......2003-04-17

This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".

5 out of 5 stars A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06

Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).

5 out of 5 stars "the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06

The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.

For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.

This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.

A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

This is where they pick it up a huge notch!! Must have if you like hardcore metal!!

5 out of 5 stars -The Darkest Red-.......2007-03-24

The lastest release from The Agony Scene is quite tastey. Nice heavy riffs, crackling drums with lots of double bass kicks, and screams that will pierce your eardrums. These are elements that can be found in about every other Metal/Metalcore band out there. But each band in the Metalcore scene brings something new to the table, because its impossible to completely copy or recreate another bands sound. Each band has different influences. The Agony Scene is darker than most of the metalcore bands of today, probably drawing heavy influences of bands like Slayer, Deicide, probably some old In Flames and Cannibal Corpse. They sound like one big wrecking ball made up of all of those bands. But don't get me wrong, this album isn't completely brutal. It has some nice clean choruses here and there. "Screams turn to Silence" is probably the best example of this. It's quite catchy and melodic, but still holds "the agony scene" brutal sound. "My dark Desire", and "Scapegoat" are two other great tracks that will have you doing some head banging. To be completely honest every song is a standout to me except "Prelude", which is just an into. If you are into Darkest Hour and other bands of that sort, go pick this up.

5 out of 5 stars I see nothing wrong with this!!!!!!.......2007-03-07

I think The Darkest Red beats their debut album any day. This album is more solid, it has better breakdowns, and the riffs are cooler than what they had on their previous album! I can do without the static intro's and some of the lyrics are although well written but the whole, beautiful, sacrifice, prayer , death every song gets old!!!! Beggars can't be choosers though. For metalcore, this band is killer, definately better than As I lay Crying, All Fag Remains, Norma Creamed, and Bleeding Poop. TAS has a swedish metal sound to me, mainly At The Gates (RIP), which is good considering ATG is gone and most members moved on to a crappy band called The Haunted which as you can see I hate as much as I hate the Newer side of In Flames(Boo Hoo). I will say i've heard enuff talk of people whining of how there's no originality anymore....no f**kin' kidding ya douche! Originality died in the Mid 90's....EVERYTHING COOL HAS BEEN DONE ALREADY, GET THAT THRU YOUR THICK SKULL! Bands like Lamb of God, Trivium, Nile, Chimaira, and any other new metal band out now have nothing original!!! Either you like it or you don't...and while we're on the subject, if you're gonna whine so much....emo is what you should be jammin' to wussy! This album is crunk!!!! Such heaviness that a metalhead like me could not resist!!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars A Giant Step Forward (4.5 stars).......2006-10-14

I do not regret the day I purchased this album. The Agony Scene is a band that blends in the energy of death metal, but crafts a style of their own. This CD has some of the most memorable riffs and blastbeats, and it also introduces the clean singing in it as well. As I have heard from music fans, they thing clean singing ruins the bands, and that is true in some cases, but the Agony Scene can pull it off well.

The atmosphere of this CD is much different from their self-titled debut. When I listened to the track "Prey", I was blown away. The music has a darker production and grasp to it. As I said before, it's more rooted into death metal. However, I don't consider this CD to be a metalcore CD really, because even if it does have an occassional breakdown and blastbeats, it's not really metalcore. I don't know what to call it. Pft, I'll just call it good music.

Other standout tracks on this CD are the catchy "Scars of Your Disease", the fast-riffed "Suffer", the explosive opening riffs on "Procession", and the title track that gives a good insight to the CD. This CD is a great big breath of fresh air, and don't dismiss it as another metalcore CD, because it sure isn't. Only flaws may be the clean vocals at times, but if you get over those, you will no doubt enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars best album ever.......2006-09-21

Agony Scene's self titled album was amazing, but this is even better....if you can handle it. All of the songs are much heavier and faster paced than the first album. The guitar riffs and overall sound are 10 times better. Much more energy and variety to this album. No other band compares. If you can't step it up and enjoy something heavier, harder, and a lot more intense, then stick with the self-titled. But if you want some of the heaviest music out there that still has great sound and energy, you'll love this.

5 out of 5 stars Life of Agony channels Stone Temple Pilots-style music.......2007-07-06

I love Stone Temple Pilots. They are one of my favorite bands of all time. That said, Life of Agony sounds an awful lot like STP on this album. I don't really care. To me, the music and vocals are so great, it doesn't matter who they are similar to. I have been a fan of LOA since the mid-90s, and each album is very different. I like each one, but I think that this is the style of music that suits them. Caputo has a voice much like Scott Weiland's. Since we no longer have STP, I think it's time to annoint LOA as the new STP, and hopefully they don't break up again. Each song on this album is great. Some are fast and rocking, like "Crackerman" by STP, others are more thoughtful and melodic, along the lines of "Big Empty" or "Creep".

This album was a pleasant surprise, and it has stood the test of time for me. I got it when it first came out and it hasn't gotten old yet.

    4 out of 5 stars Progressive Metal.......2007-06-01

This is their best. They finally did it. It took them awhile, and don't say this isn't heavier (or better for that matter) than their "River Runs Red" CD. Okay, now that I got that off my chest, let's see why this is what it is.

Here are the reasons: 1. They took their time and paid their dues touring. 2. They released a greatest hits of their earlier career before they evolved into this greatness. 3. Their are only good songs on this record. 4. They have good sound quality on the album. 5. They perform their own music to a T without errors in playing this music for the recordings done for the album. 6. They realized where they were in relation to metal, rock, the charts, song-writing, talent, vocals, guitar solos, bass guitar, and the well-oiled machine that is how they tune and perform their drumming. Then, they improved upon their great potential to make a great album. 7. I could say more but not yet.

Why do I give it 4 stars. I want people to take this seriously, so I though about how people look at this band and myself as a reviewer. I want to give it 5 stars but the fact remains that the stupid die-hard fans hate this album. This also has not had commercial success at all for some unseen reason (maybe that none of their stuff has had much commercial success).

That's it. This is just one great piece of music. It is what I'll call progressive metal. It successfully combines what they were (old-school late-eighties like metal) with Progressive Rock (gladly instead of combineing with Nu-Metal or Rap-Rock). It has an amazing instrumental, an awesome Progressive Rock titlecut, and killer cut-throat stuff that also has their best singing yet (and many combined styles of it used interchangebly) like "Strung Out"/"The Calm That Disturbs You"/"Junk Sick". Furthermore, "Last Cigarette" requires special notation as a Top 1000 Rock Song All-Time and a Top 500 Metal Song All-Time (both are somewhere in range of 1 to that #, I won't actually place it without that list yet). Best of wishes to the band, hope for more touring and many more albums like this (they might even be able to be better still).

    Prove me wrong,
    Jeff Miller

    5 out of 5 stars timeless?.......2006-05-20

Life of Agony's reunion album is a flawless piece of grungey, heavy, rock. Stone Temple Pilots and Alice in Chains quickly come to mind as influences. The trend begun with Soul Searching Sun is clearly being continued here. The results are pretty amazing. Though not very innovative, this album contains no fillers - each and every song is a gem in its own right. The song writing has matured and so has Keith's singing. He no longer needs loads of effects and manages to introduce more nuances. The production, on the other hand, is a bit too modest, you always have to turn up the volume to hear it as loud as other records recently produced.

However, I am pretty sure that any rock fan out there who listens to the album more than once (and with an open mind!) will love it. And please don't give me any of that "but it's not like "River Runs Red"! No, it's not. But, nonetheless, it's f*ck*ng great!

5 out of 5 stars Why Don't You Open Your Minds To The Sweet? a.k.a. "Not Your Grand-Daddy's LOA...".......2006-04-29

Reading all the reviews of LOA's CDs on Amazon i'm amazed by how defensive everyone gets about LOA. Either you're a RRR die-hard or you're more open-minded (for lack of a better term)and like their subsequent releases.
Me? I've stated it before. All their releases are 5 star ones!
Listening to Broken Valley, this album sounds like a natural progression from where they left off on SSS. Anyone expecting LOA to remain locked into their NYC hard-core original sound should realise that that which remains static soon enough withers and dies. I for one am sick of bands releasing subsequent albums only to rehash that which has gone before. Heck, a lot of bands don't even wait for the follow-up, their WHOLE ALBUM sounds the same! Thankfully, NOT LOA!!
Not forgetting there's been over a decade elapsed between RRR and Broken Valley, surely one must recognise that the band members themselves have grown and matured over that time, so of course the music and lyrics are going to have changed accordingly. It's just a pity that some of the listeners haven't.
Oh, and for those who didn't recognise it, the title for this review (the first part) came from a line from LOA's "Neg" from SSS.

    2 out of 5 stars UUUUUUMMMMMMM............2006-04-09

There's 2 LOA's, the River Runs Red, and the band they became after. Well, being a huge fan of their first CD, I always found it hard to get into any of their other CDs. I think River Runs Red will always be their shining Star. It just reminds me of the local NYC hardcore scene\ and how great and excitting it was back in the 90s. This is a different road for LOA, just hope they dont stay on it.
