If the art of the female singer-songwriter revolves around coffee-table soliloquies then Eye to the Telescope--the debut album from Edinburgh-born chanteuse/guitarist KT Tunstall--is a pleasing mediation between the traditional demands of brooding egocentricity (espresso) and frothy commerciality (cappuccino). KT Tunstall has star quality. "Suddenly I See" is an effortlessly liberating pop fillip while, conversely, "False Alarm" redresses ABBA's "The Winner Takes It All" for losers who had nothing to lose to begin with. However, Tunstall isn't entirely convinced by the compromise ("I'm struggling to cater for the space I'm meant to fill" she sings) and "Miniature Disasters"--one of several strong numbers showcasing her aptitude for wrapping up pop tunes in either folky bluesiness or ponderous jazz--catalogues her desires for unfettered self-expression. The opening cut "Other Side Of The World" might sound like Dido without the giftwrapped grief (she's none too flattered with the comparisons) but Eye to the Telescope is spiritually closer to Carole King and Elvis Costello than Katie Melua. And that's no bad thing. --Kevin Maidment

KT Tunstall's debut album Eye To The Telescope is the creative consequence of her inquiring imagination. "My songs examine and explore little specific emotions or situations or stories," she explains. "They're kitchen table songs, like a conversation between me and one other person. It's almost like an alien has been sent to get emotional samples from human beings and put it all together on a record."

interesting selection of music.......2007-08-02
I bought this cd for the song "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" after hearing it on the radio. KT's music is a little different, not hard rock, not jazz, just enough there to hear her beautiful voice.
Enjoy something different for a change!
Not another cookie cutter pop tart!.......2007-08-01
There is nothing manufactured or contrived about KT Tunstall or her c.d. Eye to the Telescope. It's melodic, beautiful and thoughtful.
I'll be keeping this in heavy rotation for a long time to come.
Wonderful Album.......2007-07-25
I love this album and there is not one bad song, so I can listen to it thoroughly. If you have not got this album yet what are you waiting for? Here is a tip if you liked James Blunt's Album Back to Bedlam then you will probably like this debut by KT Tunstall. In fact Amazon recommends this album if you do.
BTW when you first listen to this album you may not like it at first or maybe just like some songs, but after listening to it the second time it grows on you and you will absolutely love it. I know because when I first listened to this album I only liked half of it and feel asleep thinking this album was so boring until I listened to it the second time later in the day.
Just A Great Artist.......2007-07-19
Excellent CD, and a special singer/songwriter/performer. Expect more good things from KT and please do yourself favor by ordering all of her stuff. You won't be disappointed.

Thank you. I bought one for me and another for my daughter. I love the music

Long a Bob Dylan fan, Bryan Ferry remade "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" for his 1973 self-titled album of covers. This time around, the celebrated Roxy Music leader turns in Dylanesque, recasting 11 Dylan classics during a single live-in-the-studio week that leaves the album sounding vibrantly faithful to the original numbers. Far be it for the imaginative contrarian to retrace Dylan's steps, and sure enough--despite an omnipresent harmonica--Ferry does just the opposite. The raw rocker "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" becomes a seductive British pop song, while despair and loneliness turn into effervescence for the driving "Simple Twist of Fate." Ferry's ageless tenor injects a modern momentum into early Dylan imprints "Positively 4th Street" (with strings!), "All I Really Want to Do," and "The Times They Are A-Changing," and gloriously respects the more recent "Make You Feel My Love" (from 1997's Time out of Mind). But the best is yet to come, as the oft-covered "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" may never have received better treatment and "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down" loses not a beat of its original knock-down luster. The record closes with "All Along the Watchtower," a twin tribute to Dylan and Jimi Hendrix, the visionary for this adaptation. --Scott Holter

My wife's nightmare is my dream.......2007-07-28
So, my wife hates Dylan, I think he was a rare genius, and she's so so on Bryan Ferry, and when I was young,. you knew what would happen if you were lucky enough to take someone home and she put on Avalon. Anyway, I think he does a tremendous job, Ferry has aged like a fine wine, and his voice still drips soul. but the years have done well by him. Good album if you like them both, which I do.
Ferry and Roxy are the Biggest Omissions from the RockHall.......2007-07-25
It took a few listens to appreciate both the inspired renditions, and also Dylan's lyrics. Then again, I picked up the CD in London (where it reached #5 in the charts, not bad for a 61 year old), and first played it on a poor hotel player. Then after seeing Ferry on Letterman, I bought the follow-up DVD of the same name, and bang, 5 stars. The only song that I did not care for much GATES of EDEN, even became a triumph on the DVD.
The most influential music paper in Britain, the Guardian, consider Roxy Music the 2nd most influential Brit band after the Beatles. Whether one agrees with that, they are surely in the top-5. When asked for the best 10 British albums of all time, Morrissey stated only Roxy's FOR YOU PLEASURE. U2 of course put Roxy Music in their personal hall of fame during their induction speech. Roxy has 4 albums in the Rolling Stone 500, and that despite the anti-Brit slant of the voting. And founding member Brian Eno is #1 most represented in the RS 500 if one counts his two Roxy albums, solo albums, and as a producer for Bowie, Talking Heads, U2 etc. As the saying goes, almost everyone who went to a Roxy concert in the 70s formed a band (even the Sex Pistols were fans)....So... I do not think Dylan minds Ferry covering his songs, since he is a music fan and open-minded fellow, Dylan is perhaps playing it.
Dylanoki, not Dylanesque.......2007-07-25
Where has the old Brian Ferry gone who sang his superb interpretation of Hard Rain's Gonna Fall, another Dylan classic. Well it appears he's allready knocked on heaven's door and been admitted inside.
He's to be forgiven if he's completely lost his voice, after all Dylan also lost his, but still manages to put enough into his singing to stirr the listener's soul. But what Ferry does on this CD is uninspired karaoki at best.
If you're an ex Roxy Music or Brian Ferry fan, do not allow yourself to be disappointed. Cherish the old memories and keep away from this awful recording of otherwise gorgeous, classic songs. If you're a Dylan fan, you will be hard pressed to appreciate what Brian Ferry has done to songs you have etched in your soul.
Take It For What It Is....................2007-07-23
I've been looking forward to this album since I first heard about it a few months ago. Of all current and past vocal artists, I cant think of anyone better suited than Bryan Ferry for this arduous undertaking. How DO you interpret the career work of Bob Dylan? Think about it for a second. You can take a famous Dylan song and make it your own like, for example, Jimi Hendrix and Guns & Roses. These interpretations are outstanding, but bear little resemblance to the original Dylan songs. Or, do you try to stay true to the original recordings and imitate a voice and sound that is so incredibly unique? This approach often results a musical caricature of the original. In fairness, some artists such as the Byrds and Joan Baez have copied Dylan successfully, but only with "older" Dylan songs. Let's give Bryan Ferry his due credit. He covers a wide range of Dylan songs and he does not overplay or underplay his role in these songs. Does he respect the original recording?....absolutely. The music of Bob Dylan, along with the Beatles of course, will be eternal much like Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. Just like there are many interpretations of the work of these creative geniuses over the years, Bryan Ferry is the first (and the best) in this early effort to interpret the great Bob Dylan. It is not the original songs, but it is not supposed to be. But it is, without question, a great contribution to music at a time when musical creativity is sorely lacking. Take it for what it is.....!
Jim J.......2007-07-23
This is a cd of hit or miss...but the misses are far better than the fillers that populate many cds. My favorites and the reasons are: If Not For You--Ferry's arrangement puts a little funkiness into the song and I think it is by far the best cut. The Times They Are A-Changing is a thumpign rocker and a fantastic new musical interpretation. To Make You Feel My LOve comes out as an excellent lounge song and reminds me of Tony Bennett's "The Way You Look Tonight." The rest of the cuts are good, just not going on my I-Pod.
The best part of this entire cd is listening to the arrangements. They say much about the quality of Bob Dylan's songwriting and Ferry's ability as a singer and interpreter.
This is a well done cd. Bravo!

In the run-up to this, her third album, Joss Stone told a phalanx of glossy magazines that the difference between this disc and the two that preceded it was a newfound clarity of vision. Whereas the other records--their gold status notwithstanding--represented the fumblings of a huge-voiced kid being bossed around by experienced music-biz types, this one, she promised, would reveal the real her. Thus, the titular "introduction." To which anybody who spins the 14 groovy and fully unbuttoned tracks herein will wish to reply not "nice to meet you"--far too lame a sentiment for so fully realized a disc--but "Where have you been all my life?" As good as Joss Stone's previous efforts are, Introducing Joss Stone represents a giant step forward: there's a freshness to these songs that suits her age (19 as of the album's release) and a funkiness that suits modern pop sensibilities. There's also a cross-hatching of visions with artists like Lauryn Hill and Common that will rightly advance her reputation as an artist who can sling disco, R&B, and rock almost as convincingly as soul. Splicing girl-group harmonies with blaxploitation-style funk with Joplin-esque and, at times, Shelby Lynne-reminiscent vocals, Stone works these Raphael Saadiq-produced beats with the stealth and steadiness of a '70s-era legend who's still going strong. "Girl They Won't Believe It," she wails against the tight hoo-hoo harmonizing of talented backup singers on the opening track; get a load of how much she's accomplished in the space of three albums, and you won't believe it, either. --Tammy La Gorce

Bruised But Not Broken.......2007-08-01
My aunt used to talk about Joss Stone all the time but I never knew who she was. Even after hearing "What We Gonna Do Now", I still never really knew who she was. It was not until I was listening to the song "Bruised But Not Broken" on a cable music station that I fell in love with her music. I decided to adopt this phrase as my mantra and ask all my friends to get her CD.
Now honestly, there are a a couple of songs that are over the top, but overall I was pleased. And I like Raphael Saadiq also so I was excited about the purchase. This the kind of CD that the more you listen to it, the more you like.
ongoing developing talent.......2007-07-28
Some great stuff in here, and I really do enjoy JS's voice. Listening to this CD gave me this urge to go research older Stevie Wonder for some reason...I suspect that's a good sign. For some reason, though, I like her previous effort more. It's going to be interesting to continue to watch this still-young artist continue to develop.
Save your money...........2007-07-25
If you're looking for a great follow up to her first CD, you'd be hard pressed to find it here. "Introducing Joss Stone" sounds nothing like her first album, all of the songs are R&B based (not the jazz/blues/soul music of the first) and most of the lyrics I couldn't understand. I would think twice in purchasing this if you really liked the first album and are expecting something similar.
We both see clearly now.......2007-07-19
I love Joss Stone's voice. There's no denying it, the girl's got a set of pipes that are un-matched in this current generation of musicians, but I'm not sure Joss has found her groove yet.
Admittedly, at 14 she was too young to make the important decisions to launch her career, but this girl's been through more changes than the weather.
I think when she really hits her groove, folks will stop comparing her to Shelby Lynne, etc. It'll happen, but 19 may still be too young.
You want to hear a great Brit chick with more heart and identity, you need to listen to "Put your Records On" by Corrine Bailey Rae. Corrine doesn't have Joss' voice, but she's got down who she is.
2 Song CD.......2007-07-17
There are two 5-star songs on this CD: "Tell Me What We're Gonna Do Now" and "Girl They Won't Believe It". The other songs bring this CD down to 4-stars.

Why They Always Push Us Away.......2007-08-02
Whether you're a fanatic for Korn's early albums, or a lover of the "middle period" (up to Untouchables) like me, you can't deny that their glory days are way behind them, and they're digging themselves deeper into a rut of mediocrity at the point in their career when they should be consolidating their past strengths. The pattern is quite familiar - an established band's original members start dropping like flies but the band doesn't replace them with full-time new blood who could rejuvenate the sound. Instead, part-time pinch-hitters are utilized for labor only and are given no incentive to contribute to the band's future development. Meanwhile the remaining members become dependent on outside songwriters and studio professionals who have probably never been on a real rock stage. This common pattern has wrecked many a strong veteran band, and now it's wrecking Korn too.
Here Korn are continuing the dead-end industrialization of their sound that commenced on the last album. Granted, I think all serious musicians should develop over time, but Korn apparently think that adding electronic bleeps and synthesized squiggles is progress. It's not. This album may as well be a Jonathan Davis solo project because he's the only one who can still rise above the industrialized dreck. The greatest tragedy of this album is how Fieldy's bass and Munky's guitar have been buried by the mechanized production, reducing these formerly distinctive virtuosos to mere suppliers of sound effects that play second fiddle to the studio gimmicks that the producers have splattered all over the songs. (The same goes for the various temporary drummers, one of whom is Jonathan.) As for the songs, this album suffers from a preponderance of dreary mid-tempo groaners, and only "Bitc* We Got a Problem" and "Innocent Bystander" could even remotely qualify for Korn's more passionate earlier albums. This album sounds like a humorless and uninspired amateur industrial act covering Korn songs - or vice versa. [~doomsdayer520~]
Welcome to the Other Side.......2007-08-02
The last Korn adventure was titled See You on the Other Side...so I guess that this is what was on the other side. And it's pretty good.
Pretty much the people whining that this sounds nothing like their first three albums will still whine. People who hated See You on the Other Side will really hate this. The old Korn sound is dead and Take a Look in the Mirror was the nail in the coffin (Not knocking that album, I love it FYI). Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, get over it.
For those of us that like bands that actually evolve their sound and people who like a diverse amount of rock (especially industrial metal lovers) will probably have no problem adjusting to the new sound on this album. The music itself isn't so drastically different from their previous sounds, it's still groove and hook oriented as most Korn's albums are, it just has a much less hip-hop influence, and much more variety in terms of how the music changes throughout the song. Overall it is much more cohesive and flows so much better than See You On the Other Side.
Here's how it breaks down for me:
1) Intro - Nice, kinda trippy...no complaints ~ N/A
2) Starting Over - Really strong opening track, very gripping. One of my favorites ~ 5/5
3) B*tch We Got a Problem - Catchy, love the instrumental work, but the chorus is kind of weak ~ 3/5
4) Evolution - Addictive like crack, nice first single ~ 4/5
5) Hold On - The most "old Korn" sounding song, but really good and doesn't sound out of place ~ 5/5
6) Kiss - Awesome, I mean I thought it was going to stay a typical ballad but then the drums kick in during the chorus and the song really takes off. 5/5
7) Do What They Say - One of the weak tracks. Too sluggish, never really takes off ~ 1/1
8) Ever Be - I love how the guitars really kick in halfway through this song and love the drumming at the end ~ 3/5
9) Love and Luxury - Dear God...a Korn sound that kind of sounds uplifting!? Lucky its a really addictive track ~ 4/5
10) Innocent Bystander - One of my favorites and one of the heavier tracks on the album ~ 5/5
11) Killing - Oh hell yeah! This song changes in the most interesting ways and is ridiculously addictive through out ~ 5/5
12) Hushabye - The other weak track, just dull and the chorus annoys me ~ 1/1
13) I Will Protect You - WOW! This track is epic and easily the best closing track they have had on an album. Love it. ~ 10/5
A year of Change and trying new things........2007-08-02
Looking at numerous cds that have come out this year thus far, you can find one big thing, change (in varying degrees). A lot of artists have been trying new sounds and styles to see if it will work out and to find a new page in the history of their careers in music.
This album is another one of those albums. Korn has definitely walked away from a lot of its grungy heavy metal and stepped into a world of more "delicate" style of rock. The essence of Korn is still there, the lyrics are still very raw and powerful. Though, if you largely purchased Korn cds in the past for their heavy on the bass and craziness, you might want to sample the music first. Overall if you are a fan, don't be afraid to buy the cd, accept the change and grow with the artist.

A Fine Frenzy is actually just a fine young singer-songwriter from Seattle, born Alison Sudol. A self-taught piano player, on her debut album she pairs sweeping orchestral arrangements with dreamlike lyrics inspired by the classic works of fantasy writers like CS Lewis, EB White, and Lewis Carroll. Add to that a propensity for frilly shirts and cryptic song titles such as "The Minnow & the Trout" and you half-expect to find a back alley Joanna Newsom. Instead Sudol specializes in accessible pop epics, the kind of songs that fit perfectly over the end credits of a great Hollywood tearjerker. Despite the gentle melancholia that runs through "Ashes and Wine" and "You Picked Me," each tune arrives wrapped in an exuberant melody and topped by the singer's commanding voice. On the disc's standout moment, "Almost Lover," she shows she can do simplicity as well, musing over a sublime piano medley, "Shoulda known you'd bring me heartache/ Oh, most lovers always do." --Aidin Vaziri

Magic!.......2007-07-23
I heard A Fine Frenzy on One Tree Hill and really loved what I heard. i am very happy to have the whole cd now! My favorites are Minnow and the trout, You Picked Me, Almost Lover, Last of Days, Near To You, and Hope fotr the hopeless but i really like all of them really. I kind of hope Alison doesnt get too famous because i feel like ive found a best kept secret!! I have been listening to this album non stop!
A Stoke of Amazon Luck.......2007-07-21
I can't remember what prompted me to order ths album. I had never heard of A Fine Frenzy or Alison Sudol, but something in the Amazon marketing machine suggested it to me-- whether it was recommended or a "deal" if I bought two, I don't know. I am sure a listened to the 30 sec. teasers, and gave it a shot.
I think Alison Sudol may have the loveliest voice I have heard since Sarah McLachlan and/or Eva Cassidy. That is a major concession from me. I am a lyrics lover to the core, and so far I am impressed. Maybe I am easy, but you will have to decide for yourself.
Amazing Debut Album.......2007-07-21
I just heard this album last night and am already in love with it. I've been listening to it non-stop and it has only become more brilliant. The music is gorgeous and has utterly transfixed me. I can't recommend it enough!

Lately we've been greeted with a king's court full of singer/songwriters. I don't review their music too often and when I do, I can only draft a few terse sentences. For my part, I find many of them to be musicians, not artists. Musicians merely recite their compositions and, after a few repeat plays, I'm left hollow, finding little of themselves, their vulnerability, in the work. The artists, however, paint, weave, and sculpt with music, and you know what dangerous creatures they can be, cleverly lacing the notes with their aspirations, their fears, their essence. You can sense it in their voice, every syllable of the lyrics as they slip into you.
Such is the case with A Fine Frenzy. When I heard their album, One Cell in the Sea, I was struck by its dimensionality. With her vocal and writing talents, singer/songwriter Alison Sudol folds our hand into hers and guides us through her mysterious wonderland (evidenced by the album's cool cover and booklet art), conjuring picturesque landscapes with "Come On, Come Out", the excellent "Rangers", "You Picked Me" and "The Minnow and the Trout" and ensnaring us in sumptuous wine-dark woodlands with her intimate offerings "Almost Lover", "Hope for the Hopeless", "Near to You" and "Ashes and Wine".
By the time the final track, "Borrowed Time", concluded, I found myself in a well of thoughts and emotions, albeit delightedly so. Sudol has not only crafted an outstanding and bravely personal album, but a magical world I look forward to visiting time and again.

wow i hate amazon.......2007-08-02
well here it is i think this album rocks being a huge fan i guess i would but it really is likeable. second i HATE AMAZON! i preordered this album and look two days later i still dont have it. i had to download it because i couldent wait for amazon to send it. that off my chest back to the review the album has this really trippy sound wich i like some lyrics are very catchy overall i fell this album has a much better lasting appeal that syotos. favorite tracks evolution, [...] we got a problem, killing, and innocent bystander. ive been with korn since day one and will continue to truge the long haul! GOOOO KORN!
Korn's new sound is authentic and here to stay.......2007-08-01
It gets a little old hearing people comparing Korn's new music to their old stuff. Korn have said that in losing 2 members (only 1 perminant), they have changed as a band and in this the music they create. I have been a Korn fan for 10 years now and I have never been disappointed, and I can say this with "Untitled." This new sound is heavier than 2005's See You on the Other Side and resembles 2002's Untouchables. I can listen to this entire album with only skipping one track (Do What They Say). It isn't a horible song, I just don't care for it. Overall, if you are a Korn fan pick this Limited Edition up if you can (it is sold out in most retail stores). Die hard Korn fans should love this album and I cannot wait to see these guys in Orlando.
Disappointed...but still must have for Korn fans..........2007-08-01
I bought the Special Edition CD with DVD, because I love watching behind the scenes videos of the recording process. I also was a little swayed by the free T-shirt offer with this package (by the way it is $10 for shipping and handling which is far from free...the last time is sent a package of this size it cost $.99 for the envelope and $2.10 for the postage).
Be careful when you open the packaging...you could drop the contents easily. There are 3 cards for each of the remaining band members (Brian "Head" Welch left the group before the last CD as he found religion and got clean from drugs, and now David Silveria has had to take a hiatus for surgery to relieve nerve pain in left arm), there is a card with code for free T-shirt, there is a pull out poster, the CD booklet, a cardboard jacket for the CD and another cardboard jacket for the DVD...seems a little much to shuffle through if you just want to grab the CD and play (so if you hate packaging and just want the tunes stick to the jewel case regular CD version). I do have to admit that the artwork with this CD is very cool. I think that is why I spent the extra cash on it.
Now on to the music...this is a different release for Korn. Don't expect to hear the same sounds from See You On The Other Side or Take A Look In The Mirror. This is a less guitar driven album. It is more like Pink Floyd meets Nine Inch Nails. This album is more processed with keyboards, sound effects, layering sounds, etc. The drums are very different here...some of the tracks were recorded with Terry Bozzio (which is really a treat as he is a great drummer) and some are Jonathan Davis...and I think they had another drummer enlisted to finish off the record. The bass guitar is less prominent too. The sound is very dense and melodic, but more rhythmic than grinding as in the past.
It is really different, and that is the key to my disappointment. I am used to loving every song and every sound from Korn as in the past. I love the complex rhythms and sounds that Korn has always produced, but this time around I am not immediately drawn to it.
If you love Korn, then go for it! If you are a casual Korn fan, then listen to sound bites first or borrow from a friend to check it out. I think for me it will take some time and a few more listens to get into this one.
The touring band that they have set for Untitled looks amazing...They have Slipknot's drummer and Sevendust's guitar player to round out the line up...should be good to see live!
.......and then there were three..... a strong 4 1/2 star album.......2007-08-01
If 'See You On The Other Side' was the bridge to get there then 'Untitled' is the other side. Most of the album is filled with artsy experimental music that is truly evolutionary as far as Korn goes. With Head devoting his life to God and David on hiatus all that is left of Korn are Jonathan,Munky,Fieldy. Ofcourse once again the boys from Bakersfield surround themselves with many talented individuals. From the production team of The Matrix to producer Atticus Ross to session drummer Terry Bozzio. Most of the tracks were created all together in the studio with ideas flowing like a geiser. Most of the album comes off noisy but yet clean. But gone is the Korn your grandpa used to listen to. It is less heavier than 'SYOTOS' but flows much better. The continuity is there with tremndous confidence and from track to track it is easy to tell that this is the new Korn for all. Some may like it and some won't. If you are wanting to hear the 'S/T' or 'Life's Peachy' or even 'Take A Look In The Mirror' then go and listen to those albums. But if you enjoyed 'SYOTOS' as much as I did then give this album a try. For it is better than its predecessor......and as far as this Deluxe Limited Edition goes you get a 47 minute DVD documenting the band in the studio and photo slideshow which is cool. Fantastic artwork throughout the package. A bonus track called 'Sing Sorrow' which is a very strong track. Three postcards of each member drawn which is also very cool. A two sided poster of the album art that comes with creases(that sucks) and a coupon to redeem a free t-shirt from the band. Very very cool...and it all comes in a nice hard box. Korn really did a great job with this package. Big props go out to them.....for me the only down side is the unablilty to read the small wavy print in the sleeve.....very difficult to read.
Think Pink Floyd does Heavy Metal.......2007-08-01
I found this album to be very similar to SYOTOS first time around. It does have the 'artsy' sound to it and my first reaction was 'Pink Floyd does Heavy Metal'. Very trippy cd with a mix of melody and goth intertwined in each song. Favorite song on the album after first couple of go rounds has got to be 'Killing'. Very militant and heavy 'old-school' KoRn feel to it and great to jam along with. This album isn't for everyone, and if you didn't really like Issues or SYOTOS, you might not like this one. Every album has a message, and the message delivered in this album is very clear, KoRn hates God and fixed religion. But overall, I give this album a 4 out of 5, just because it had to grow on me after about 4 listens and it just didn't 'grab' me first time around.

Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score captures the conflict between 18th-century Jesuit missionaries trying to convert the native Indians, and the slavers who want to destroy them. In keeping with the serious subject matter and epic scope of Roland Joffé's film, the score is by turns grave, lyrical, and tense. Ever inventive, Morricone mixes liturgical chorales, native drumming, and Spanish-influenced guitars, often in the very same track, to capture the drama of the culture clash. His trademark lyricism also comes through, notably in the beautiful themes for "Gabriel's Oboe" and "The Mission." Not as over-the-top as his well-known spaghetti Western scores, The Mission shows Morricone at his dramatic best. --Heidi MacDonald

An excellent sound track from a powerful movie. Ennio Morricone is a very gifted composer and really captured the haunting beauty of the film. Well worth listening to.
Great music.......2007-03-31
Ennio Morricone's soundtrack of The Mission is fabulous. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because there wasn't more of that fantastic sound in the CD! Truly enchanting.

Punctuated by 2005's sprawling compilation of B-sides and outtakes (Out-of-State Plates), a nearly four-year interval between fresh recordings has done nothing to tarnish Fountain of Wayne's pop-drenched songwriting tandem of Chris Collingswood and Adam Schlesinger. This 14-song bash is a late-'60s/early-'70s time warp that exploits every facet of the pop action plan (chiming guitars, infectious choruses, sinful harmonies) and begs for radio play. As usual, the band never takes itself too seriously, crafting melodies around a lively, vigorous cast of characters that practically come to life. There's a DMV attendant who can't shake our attention (the bouncy, piano-boosted "Yolanda Hayes"), an airport-stranded couple waiting impatiently for lost luggage (the folksy "Michael and Heather at the Baggage Claim"), and ex-lovers who blame it on the highway ("Fire in the Canyon," which explores the radio country-rock of the Eagles and America). They sing of an old-model Japanese car to get the girl ("'92 Subaru") and Renee seeing you "at the Gap in a baseball cap" ("This Better Be Good"), and any way they shake it, even after a too-long interruption, Collingswood and Schlesinger rarely miss the mark. --Scott Holter
Album Description
A new, indelible cast of characters is inducted into the FOW pantheon of stars on Traffic And Weather: Yolanda Hayes, a sullen object of affection behind the glass at the Department Of Motor Vehicles; Seth Shapiro and Beth Mackenzie, two lonely, hardworking New Yorkers who cross paths - sort of - in "Someone To Love" (which features Hole/Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur singing backing vocals); the exhausted couple in "Michael and Heather At The Baggage Claim", dragging themselves onto an airport shuttle bus after a long trip; newscasters in heat in the album's title track, and many others. Hapless protagonists like the suspicious boyfriend of "This Better Be Good" and the hit-man target in "Strapped For Cash" are also classic Fountains Of Wayne narrators.
Travel and transportation continue to figure heavily in the on-the-go world of FOW. The guy who buys himself a "'92 Subaru" is convinced that the right pimped-out ride is all he needs to get the girl; in the Beatlesque "i-95" a driver explores a rest area gift shop late at night, on the way to visit his loved one; we hear of "an eerie kind of sadness on the highway today" in the Gram Parsons-tinged "Fire In The Canyon" (featuring backing vocals by the Candy Butchers' Mike Viola, who was the voice of "That Thing You Do"). The misery of sitting in coach on a delayed flight is examined in the wistful waltz "Seatbacks And Traytables" (which contains a guest appearance on guitar by James Iha). And in the semi-epic "New Routine", we follow a series of characters who each randomly pick a new place to live, only to discover someone else there who can't wait to move away.
Customer Reviews:
I'm going to be listening to this one for a long long time.......2007-07-24
Let's make it simple. The music is catchy, the lyrics are fun and original. I hear and feel Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Sheryl Crow, and a whole lot of great 80's bands on this one. I dare you not to bob your head while driving and listening to the title track!
Awesome.......2007-07-20
It makes me laugh when I read reviews of people complaining about this record. I like all of FOW's records and I to might've liked a little more guitar driven rockers on this release but for the life of me I can't understand how anyone can put this record down. Nobody out there is as creative lyrically or hook wise and nobody is doing or can do what they are doing and I'm grateful as heck that there is a band out there that I actually look forward to hearing and learning those smart snappy lyrics. These guys are real musicians and that seems to be a long lost artform these days. Go listen to the radio and you'll see what I mean.
Corny.......2007-07-18
This album is either 2 or 3 stars - I decided for 2. This is the first Fountains of Wayne album I have listened to, but I have heard a few of their singles from years ago. The songwriting on this album is real corny, and intentionally so. A lot of the instrumentation is just as corny too - overly catchy hooks and harmonies that grate with only a few listens. Oh, and the name dropping and brand-slinging is rampant and also becomes grating.
Sure, they don't take themselves too seriously, but nearly every single song is obsessed with cars, trains, airplanes, and travel in some way. This obsession certainly is familiar to me - perhaps the songwriter is autistic? Or, to be fairer, maybe they were trying to create a theme album, however, I hear that this band is always obsessed with transportation. I don't know; I must say that I can easily remember each song, which is a good sign, but many songs are not memorable in a good way. I hear other albums, like their self-titled, are better. I recommend listening to that first if, like me, this is the first FoW album you are about to hear.
More of the Same from Fountains of Wayne.......2007-07-15
Fountains of Wayne's latest album doesn't change much of their formula. There are 14 songs, all some variation of pleasant, ultra-catchy pop-rock. It's all well-written and some of it is clever, and yet, the overall effect is something a bit diminished this time. I thought I personally had an endless appetite for cool variations on power-pop, but maybe that's not so true anymore. It's tough to pin down exactly what, if anything, is wrong with Traffic and Weather.
The songs, taken individually, are pretty darn good. There's opener and single "Someone to Love," which features a slight curveball in the familiar FoW formula by including a hyped-up disco-beat chorus. Then there's "Yolanda Hayes," a bouncy song with sweet lyrics about the narrator's attempts to woo a DMV attendant. "This Better Be Good" is about the paranoia of a man who keeps hearing sketchy rumors of his girlfriend being seen with other men and in places she isn't supposed to be. I-95 is a wistful country song with lyrics about driving down the titular interstate to visit a long-distance lover. "Planet of Weed" is a one-joke song that's made to work with the ambient sounds in the background- various clinking and low talking. Plus the piano that fades in and out, playing bits completely unrelated to the main song, and the tambourine that keeps showing up that isn't on the beat at all. "New Routine" is a strong rocker that zooms around the world and tells several stories of disenchanted people making a change in their lives.
But then there's the rest of the songs. The band's penchant for pop-culture references verges on the out-of-control on this album; it'll be dated by 2008. "Someone to Love" works entirely on its music and chorus, the verses reference Coldplay, King of Queens, and The Late Show, and you're getting a bit aggravated on the first song. Then there's "'92 Subaru," a song whose narrator is a pompous jackass talking about how he is pimping out his car. I think it's supposed to be ironic, but the "irony" comes across about as well as Motley Crue's "Dr. Feelgood" came across as an anti-drug song (now they've got me making the references- dammit!). "Traffic and Weather" is a one-joke song that doesn't work, as a male news anchor spends the whole song telling his female co-anchor "we belong together, like traffic and weather." The effect is creepy, and not so funny. "Michael and Heather at the Baggage Claim" is a boring story of a couple who have lost their luggage, and it's supposed to be sweet, but it's piled on too thick and becomes cloying. And "Strapped for Cash" features another unlikeable narrator that's supposed to be funny, this time a loser who owes money to everyone.
Leaders Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood are as strong as ever in the songwriting department. But since their style hasn't changed nearly at all over the past decade, the weaknesses in the lyrics keep this album from being a home run. Too bad the guys didn't write more stuff like the two great new songs off of their 2005 B-side collection, "Maureen" and "The Girl I Can't Forget." Despite the complaints, this is still a pretty good album. I'd give it a 3.5 on the Amazon scale, or a solid 7/10.
Fun fun fun!.......2007-06-08
My only prior experience with FOW was Welcome Interstate Managers which I love. Listening to this band never fails to bring a smile to my face. No, they are not very "deep," but they are clever and I always feel like I am in on the joke. Their rhymes put me in mind of Lily Allen. The song that runs through my head these days is Traffic and Weather, but I love Strapped for Cash, and the part that makes me go Awww! is in Michael and Heather at the Baggage Claim where Michael asks Heather "Have you had enough?" and Heather says "Michael, you know it's you I love." And how about the places people end up in New Routine? Too funny. This is pop at its finest - catchy, funny and makes you feel smart.

Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall burst onto the public consciousness last year with her gritty debut album Eye to the Telescope, a provocative sonic mesh of heartfelt pop, rootsy, electric blues, and left-field alt-rock. Eye spawned three hit singles the Grammy-Award nominated "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree," "Suddenly I See," and "Other Side of the World" all of which became omnipresent on radio, television, movies, and the Internet. Thanks to the multi-media exposure, Eye is certified platinum in the U.S., with worldwide sales exceeding 3.5 million copies.
Now Tunstall is readying her follow-up, entitled Drastic Fantastic, which will be released by Virgin Records on September 18th, 2007. It showcases the 31-year-old's growth as both a songwriter and musician on songs like the thumping "Hold On," the rollicking "Saving My Face," the jazz-inflected "Someday Soon," and the frisky pop gem "I Don't Want You Now." "I wanted to be braver," Tunstall says of the album. "I wanted to push the musicality. You can't let previous success scare you away from moving on."

The Smashing Pumpkins' greatest-hits album, Rotten Apples, traces the band's evolution (or devolution, depending on your feelings about the band's radical sonic shift in the mid-'90s) from its early days to its status among the kings of alt rock. For fans of the Pumpkins' beginnings as a tripped-out indie/art rock act, Apples opens with some of the band's strongest material. "Siva" and "Rhinoceros" (from Gish, the Pumpkin's first--and arguably best--album) seamlessly mixed dream pop with noisy goth-rock as prime examples of the Pumpkins' early '90s sound. Apples also showcases three stellar tracks ("Cherub Rock," "Today," and "Disarm") from Siamese Dream, the Pumpkins' breakout album. This disc makes the band's mid-'90s directional swing obvious, though, starting with "Bullet with Butterfly Wings," the aggressive alt rock/alt metal concoction released on Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Fans of songs like "Zero," "Tonight, Tonight," and "The Everlasting Gaze" will be happy to know that pretty much every cage-rattling hit made it to this disc, along with the previously unreleased dream pop track "Real Love" and an untitled new track (that sounds a lot like the Siamese Dream-era Pumpkins) to round out the mix. --Jennifer Maerz
Customer Reviews:
helped me through hell.......2007-06-18
after i got this cd it was constantly playing, i have heard all these songs and uncounted amount of times and i still listen every day. the order of bullet and then the next track as 1979 is genius, also drown fits in very nicely at track 3. the only grapes i have with this album is that it wasnt like a 22 track cd, you know, the other 4 tracks should have been sprinkled in there. they should have been mayonaise, geek usa, muzzle, and go out with thirty-three. but it doesnt matter cuase i have every sp album, but still this cd is nicely put together, it really soothed my entire being on days where i really wanted to be done. but it and if u like it u need to at least buy siamese dream, and if you dont already know about mellon collie then like they say its never too late to get into some real music, completely unto itself. really there is nothing like it. and it is a gorgeous thing that no matter what comes the music of billy corgan and smashing pumpkins will live on.
Most of the greatist hits..........2007-04-20
Corgan and SP made some of the most creative songs during the 90s.Theres not many bands like them.
But when I bought the album I was a little dissipointed too see that there were some songs missing.Such as "Spaceboy", "Thirty-Three", "By Starlight", "Starla" and "Try,Try,Try".It might have also been cool if they added the "1979" Moby remix.
But all in all the album is awesome.I suggest people who are new too Smashing Pumpkins to buy this album before they go and get their other albums. If you like greatist hits I suggest you get MCATIS and Adore. But I think you won't regret getting this.
One of the few greatest hits albums that actually satisfy.......2007-03-27
When it comes to "best of's" and compilations, very rarely can a collection successfully comprise a solid overview of a band's catalog. The Smashing Pumpkins' "Greatest Hits" is one of the few of these collections that actually satisfies, providing a very solid overview of the songs that propelled the band to stardom. Singles from "Gish" to "Machina: The Machines of God" are covered here, as well as "Eye" from the soundtrack to David Lynch's Lost Highway, and unreleased songs "Real Love" and "Untitled", which are actually pretty good as well. The only real downsides to this compilation are that no other non-singles are covered here, and the CD booklet features no kind of commentary at all from any of the band members. That aside, for casual fans of the Smashing Pumpkins, "Greatest Hits" isn't a bad pick up at all.
Greatest Hits.......2007-02-22
I really enjoyed this album. I've tried to buy this cd in the store, but can't find it (sold out). Amazon offered a much better price on it anyway, so I was able to save a little extra money. This cd truely offers the band's greatest hits in one cd. If you like The Smashing Pumpkins, which many people do, I highly suggest this cd.
Buy the 2 disc version.......2007-02-14
The 2nd disc of rarities and b sides on the limeted edition is one of their best releases. Unless you dont own Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie, and Adore there is no reason to buy this, just get the other albums and make a mix. Or get the videos DVD.
