"operation detonation".......2005-07-14
First off, this album cover is extremely tacky. They have electrical tape around the edges of the American flag to keep it stiff with a cardboard ax duct taped to it not to mention the band's outfits. But, since it was the 1980s and it was hair metal, it seems very appropriate. Menace to Society was released in 1986 a year after Lizzy Borden's brilliant Love You to Pieces LP. Menace is not as solid as Pieces but it is still excellent and very accessible.
Lizzy Borden usually opened their records with an energetic, adrenaline-pumper, and they do so again here with "Generation Aliens." It is a fast and furious rocker with Lizzy at his screaming best. The best track here is "Notorious." It has a crazy fast bass beat, you'd swear Iron Maiden's Steve Harris is doing the honors! Then there is Lizzy hitting incredible high notes and powerful chants of "Hail Caesar!" Awesome track and one of the best `80s metal tracks ever! This album is worth the price for "Notorious" alone! Although "Notorious" is the definite high-point, the rest of the album is also very solid. "Terror on the Town" is a straight-forward rocker. "Bloody Mary" is another favorite of mine. It is slower but with a lot of power. There is no screaming on this track but it is still very intense. "Stiletto (Voice of Command)" is a faster track with the characteristic chanting "Can you hear the voice of command."
As is obvious from the title, "Ultra Violence" is about the Stanley Kubrick film A Clockwork Orange: "We always find there's always time for a bit of the ol' in and out." "Love Kills" is an accessible rocker with a menacing guitar riff at the end. A drum cadence opening and pulsating guitar riffs highlight "Brass Tactics." "Ursa Minor" is a superb power ballad. Unlike other slower songs by Lizzy, this track never explodes into a rocker. The title track ends the album on an energetic note. It is not a stand-out but it certainly is not bad. It ends with the distorted voice announcing "a test of the emergency broadcast system." On the vinyl version, the test tone plays through the blank space at the end of the record.
I like most of the material Lizzy has released. Menace to Society, while not their best, is an excellent example of 1980s power metal. If you are looking for a first Lizzy album to buy, I'd go with Love You to Pieces (the first one I bought was Master of Disguise and it immediately made me a Lizzy fan, but it is a bit more theatrical), but Menace is very accessible as well so you probably cannot go wrong either way.
GET THIS!!!!!!.......2004-08-04
This is one of the most essential 80's METAL albums, emphasis on the word metal. On the cover, they may look like just another poppy hair band that never really made it. Actually, Lizzy Borden was much heavier, sort of like a cross between Queensryche and WASP. Menace To Society is probably their best album. The lyrics are mostly about bad kids wreaking havoc upon eveything and everybody. Cool. Most of the songs are horns-in-the-air hard rockers, but there is a power ballad, Ursa Minor. It has a prog sound to it, with heavy Queensryche influence. This is one spectacular metal album that shows how heavy metal was meant to be played: loud, fast, and uncomprimising.
VERY GOOD.......2004-07-24
Again i can't say enough about lizzys vocal style and strength. A very solid CD here with some dark lyrics. Bloody mary is piercing ..terror on the town is awesome. Ursa minor shows the vocal range once more and the rest rocks. Heavily recommend basically every cd they've done and especially love you to pieces and deal with the devil.
lizzy does it again.......2003-12-16
a great guitar rock album. good music and lizzy doing what he does best, sreaming.
Gets you going........2000-05-20
Menace to Society is Lizzy Borden's heaviest release. I find it to be a little more aggressive than Love You to Pieces. All ten of the tunes are pretty good. The musicianship and production are tight. The song lyrics are also far from boring. Lizzy has got a voice that's very unique--he can really hit the high notes too. He sings great the whole album. Menace to Society is pure energy from beginning to end. The guitar playing is cool throughout. The song that I like the most is "Notorious." "Terror on the Town" has a good guitar riff also. I like the drum intro to "Brass Tactics" too. Menace to Society is worth a listen.

A Pissed Off Paul ..........2007-04-14
Paul sounds like he was pretty pissed off when he recorded this album.Sounds like he was trying go heavier in the vein of Halford's band "Fight" and maybe a little "Pantera" thrown in.Well, the result was a very heavy record with a ton of attitude.Menace' was actually released twice with the second issue (on the Metal Blade Label) having alternative cover art (the voodoo doll " Bleeding Hearts" cover being the personal fave of this reviewer). The songs "Die By The Gun","Chemical Imbalance" and "Three Words" sealed the deal for me personally."Menace To Society" is obviously a tad heavier than "Murder One",but overall not the jewel that album was.Still a damn worthy follow up and it sounds a helluva alot better than any "Pantera" disc could ever dream of !!!! ----
