Guitarist John Williams (no, not John Williams the soundtrack composer) adds to his fine catalog of impeccable recordings with Classic Williams: Romance of the Guitar. But this isn't just a best-of collection (though some of his greatest work is included here) since the disc contains three new recordings. Among the new tracks, Fauré's Pavane is a real stunner, a short but gorgeous piece originally meant for orchestra and choir, where Williams's guitar sounds as though it always belonged there. We get Williams at his most interpretative--his arrangements of Satie's Gymnopedie No. 3 and Piazzolla tango Verano porteno--and his most serene (the "Cavatina" theme from the movie Deer Hunter). Let's face it, some fine classical guitarists can lull their listeners into near comatose states with their instrument; Williams, on the other hand, is just the opposite. His gorgeous tone, inventive arrangements, and interesting repertoire continue to make the classical guitar sound exciting. In short, a great introduction to Williams and a real gem for lovers of classical guitar. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
The Aranjuez Adagio is Perfection.......2007-03-01
The second movement adagio of the Aranjuez concert is one of my favourite pieces, a very difficult one to get right. I've listened to well over a dozen variations, the one on this CD, track 19, is an absolute gem. Just by itself is reason enough to own this CD. The only other Aranjuez performance that's even worth mentioning in the same breath is Julian Bream's, track 2 of the CD titled just "Julian Bream", with the Monteverdi orchestra. Both are just stunning performances, as close to perfection as it gets. Julian's is a bit stronger on the guitar than the one here.
Classic.......2007-01-26
Excellent CD for those interested in classical music. All the tracks are great in sound quality!
Classic Williams: Romance of the Guitar.......2007-01-20
Loved the songs....loved the guitar renditions. Would highly recommend!
The Best One Disc Compilation of the Man That's Out There!.......2006-04-19
If you had to call modern classical guitar by another name, it would be John Williams. A student of none other than the brilliant Andres Segovia himself, John has shown over the years to have learnt a great deal from the master and has himself developed simply impeccable technique.
As a guitarist myself who has been struggling all these years with "Cavatina", it always amazes me how effortlessly John makes the tune sound so simple and as if two guitarists are playing, one for the accompanyment and one for the melody and yet it's all him! Not only are the tracks representative of John's great talent but they also represent some of the most famous and challenging pieces to play.
Another great example of this is "Asturias(Leyenda) by Albeniz, a hauntingly beautiful and deceptively simple-sounding piece. We also get pieces that span the centuries from J.S. Bach and Vivaldi to Stanley Myers and York ending with the brilliant second movement of Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez".
Although the sound quality isn't brilliant as some tracks sound better mastered than others, overall this is a great one disc introduction to John Williams' work and comes highly recommended.
Excellent!!.......2006-03-06
This is a delightful compilation. The music flows effortlessly and leaves the listener wanting more.

Despite global warming, Vivaldi's The Four Seasons is more popular than ever. But it still seems strange that Gidon Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica ensemble--a group that continues to stun us with riveting performances of lesser-heard works--would tackle the tried-and-true baroque masterpiece. Luckily, Kremer inventively separates each Vivaldi season with a corresponding composition from Astor Piazzolla's Four Seasons Suite, making for fascinating comparisons. Kremer's performances of the Vivaldi are remarkable, sounding solid and fresh. And like an infectious Broadway musical, Piazzolla's seasons always seem on the verge of a giddy dance number. Kremer really gets to show off on these tango-inspired pieces, but he's charming throughout. The programming probably won't make this your reference Four Seasons, but for those who love their Vivaldi in small doses or fans of Kremer's Tango Ballet disc, this is a must-have. --Jason Verlinde

Music ALIVE!.......2006-03-12
I really know hardly anything about Argentinan music or Kremer, but I bought this album after I became enraptured with the spring and summer suites at a ballet. My local company created a piece inspired by the works of expatriate artist Amaranth Ehrenhalt and set to alternating Vivaldi and Piazzola selections. I was amazed by how Vivaldi's Seasons took on new life. Everything was vivid and fluid and meshed perfectly with the dance. I recommend this--you can truely feel the seasons alive in all of their glory.
BTW: Rio de la Plata means River of Silver.
Full Circle With Kremer's Eight Seasons.......2005-10-19
Gidon Kremer has been building himself quite the reputation as an interpreter of the music of the late and great Argentine musical polymath, Astor Piazzolla. Here he takes the very well-known Four Seasons of Vivaldi and stands them up to the Four Seasons of Piazzolla and the result is an aural delight.
Most who are reading this are probably curious about this CD for one of two reasons: either they are Vivaldi fans, or they are Piazzolla fans. But who says that being a fan of one has to exclude the other? After you listen to this, you are likely to become a fan of the music of both composers and of Gidon Kremer as well if you were not already.
Being a huge Piazzolla fan,I never tire of hearing different interpretations of one of his most important works. The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires may be born of tango, but it is much more than that. It is a masterful marriage of classical elements with those of tango. Piazzolla could do many things with music and what he has created with his Four Seasons is an electrifying blend that will stand the test of time.
And so here is Gidon Kremer with yet another skillful and faithful interpretation of the both the spirit and the letter of Astor Piazzolla's music, cleverly juxtaposed with that of one of the Old Masters. Kremer brings us full circle with his presentation of the Four Seasons sequences of both composers, beginning with Vivaldi's La Primavera (Spring) and after a musical journey through the year, ending with Primavera Portena (Buenos Aires Spring) so that we finish where we began.
Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica do a virtuoso job throughout. Though I am a partisan of the music of Piazzolla, I enjoy Kremer's interpretation of Vivaldi as well. If you know and love this music as I do, then Eight Seasons merits an esteemed slot in your CD collection.
Rapturous.......2004-07-21
Parts of this recording are so beautiful that when I listen while working, I have to pause what I am doing and close my eyes. I don't remember how I ended up buying this CD (it certainly wasn't planned), but I am so grateful.
My rabbit hates it though. When I listen to it at home, he stamps his feet. So I can only listen to it at work. :(
"Eight wonders".......2003-02-24
Gidon Kremer's musical explorations were very famous from the beginning and during the last few years he is gaining almost a "classical superstar" status. I was a little suspicious about those beautifully packaged CDs with sort of "trendy" and almost too interesting sounding titles for serious classical achievements. BUT!! I couldn't be more wrong. "After Mozart" or "Eight Seasons" seem to be some of the most inspiring recordings I've heard. While listening to "Eight Seasons" at "concert" levels in a privacy of my room, I felt "goose bumps" for several times and I had to laugh out of pleasure, thinking: this is SOOO good. Gidon Kremer and his "baltic fresh" Kremerata Baltica are pursuing and tacking the pure essence of music. Programming the mix of Piazzola and Vivaldi doesn't seem extraordinary anymore. It is pure music, pure joy. Technical bravura and excellent sound are only side things. Tango nuevo - widely popularized music form and one of the most (ab)used baroque masterpieces join as one in a fresh and artistically meaningful entity. What more can we wish for ?
Piazzola sounds energetic and powerful and Vivaldi the freshest out of numerous interpretetions. Mixed in an interesting sequence they form a new "Opus".
I also strongly recommend "After Mozart" with its mixture of contemporary music and timeless, for many "godlike" Mozart. A recording that makes him human and even more divine at the same time.
From the River Plate (Rio de la Plata)........2002-11-10
The River Plate, an akward translation from the spanish "Rio de la Plata", is the widest river on the world. It both separates and bonds Buenos Aires with Montevideo, capitals cities of Argentina and Uruguay respectively. If I could ask Billy Joel how would he name this river, I think that much alike his excellent album "River of Dreams", he would call it "River of Tango".
Yesterday night I attended Mr. Kremer and the Baltic Kamerata's performance, where in addition to Mahler's 10th Adaggio, they played these "eight seasons". I think that for Mr. Kremer and his ensemble, coming to play to South America and precisely to the birthplace of tango, could be a "tour the force".
Well, he & the Kamerata were magnificient, classy. He kept us on our feet, applauding, for more than fifteen minutes.
This CD has capture the thrilling of his live performances. It is the kind of recording that becomes a milestone in our "audio memory", as Mr. Karajan liked to say. Enjoy it.

I settled back for an enjoyable listening only to find the audio engineering so bad I could hardly listen to the CD. In fact, I don't. The intrumental track is OK, Eydie Gorme's track is OK, but the Los Panchos' track is inaudible. I really like Los Panchos for their excellent ensemble work. Not this time. I couldn't hear them.

Album Description
This recording presents a selection of some of the least and the best known exponents of twentieth century Latin-American guitar repertoire, among them the internationally renowned Argentinian composer Máximo Diego Pujol, whose Elegy for the death of a tanguero is an elegant homage to his compatriot, the father of the classical tango, Astor Piazzolla. Leo Brouwer is found in unusually lyrical mood and two of Piazzolla's most popular songs are heard in an arrangement by Colombian-born guitarist Ricardo Cobo.
Customer Reviews:
Perfection.......2006-02-05
What can I say? Every piece on this recording I love, and Ricardo plays them all to perfection. This CD is sure to get more play than most of my other CDs. If you like classical guitar check out all the Naxos label CDs, I own like 4-5 of them, and they are all excellent listening. This one I must say stands out to me, but mainly because of my preference for Latin guitar music.
Sensuous and poetic playing with amazing technique.......2004-08-17
Although I'm honestly tired of all the "Latin collection" CDs out there, this one is played by a "real" Latin and you can hear it from the first track. It is not only believable, but compelling. The poetry in Reis's two pieces (Track 2,3) is simply beautiful and Cobo's phrasing is refreshingly provocative rather than safe. This player's music is fluid, his sound silky and detailed, and his musical thinking exciting and natural. Although I have several versions of Piazzolla on guitar, these arrangements totally rock. Cobo's arrangement of "El Choclo" is dazzling, especially the last variation. Without saying more, every track on this recording is really special. Take it from a serious student of guitar and avid listener- this CD is a must-have if you like guitar.
An eclectic collection of guitar music, wonderfully played!.......2004-07-07
This is my favorite CD of Latin American guitar music. Ricardo Cobo is a Columbian guitarist currently living in Las Vegas and his playing is among the best I've heard. As the liner-notes indicate, this CD features some well-known Latin American composers as well as some who are virtually unknown. (Outside of the Cuban composer Leo Brouwer, all the composers whose music is featured on this CD are South American.)
The pieces by Manuel Pujol are particularly moving (his work in homage to Piazzolla is alone worth the price of the CD!), as are the two works by the little known composer, Dilermando Reis. Also worth mentioning is Leo Brouwer's piece 'Un Dia de Noviembre,' a beautiful modal ballad (in the natural minor 'Aeolian' mode) that sounds almost like 'new age music' but that is more interesting and subtle. I don't particularly care for the two pieces by Astor Piazzolla (the 1st and last tracks on the CD), as I don't think they fit well with the rest of the CD's music, but overall this CD has enough beautiful guitar music to warrant many listenings. Some of the slower pieces are reminiscent of the music of the brilliant Paraguayan guitarist/composer Agustin Barrios, whose music was neglected for too long but is now getting serious attention (I would recommend David Russell's recording of Barrios' music for solo guitar -- simply beautiful).
And with Naxos' extremely low prices, you really can't go wrong with Cobo's CD!
Great guitar CD.......2003-12-18
I've been waiting for this CD to come out. It was worth the wait. The pieces are familiar Latin guitar music. The playing is the best I've ever heard on any Cobo recording. His Latin soul comes through in this recording. With his superior technique he gets an amazing sound out of the guitar. The richness of this music comes through more with each listening. Buy this CD! You won't regret it.
If you like the tango or classical guitar, this is for you.......2003-12-15
I had looked forward to Cobo's release of this collection of Latin American guitar music. There are few players on the planet who can match his technique and sound (he won the prestigious Guitar Federation of America Competition in 1987), and fewer yet with such direct ties to Latin American music (he's a native of Colombia and has received that country's highest honors for accomplishment in the arts). The CD doesn't disappoint. Much of the music is familiar to guitarists, although not all from guitar renditions (Cobo has transcribed some popular tangos from piano or other mediums). Cobo's talent is apparent and consistent throughout. If you like the tango or similar music, and/or if you like to hear the classical guitar played well, you'll like this recording.

To say that the Kronos Quartet's Nuevo is their most adventurous outing to date is hardly an understatement. This diverse collection of Mexican compositions and traditional tunes brims with an unpredictable energy and a dazzling array of Latin American guest performers, and, yes, Kronos keeps up throughout. A cocktail pop tune from Esquivel gets covered, there's a chamber arrangement of Revueltas's sprawling orchestral work Sensemaya, and Nortec Collective member Plankton Man remixes Kronos's interpretation of "El Sinaloense" into a sizzling dance music track, which closes the disc. The playing is spirited, to say the least (just check out "El Llorar," with guest vocalists Alejandro Flores and Efren Vargas). But this is foremost a party record. A bevy of reverb effects and instrumentation (including a squeaky musical leaf solo on "Perfidia") ensures that things stay unpredictable. Production work by Rock en Espanol producer Gustavo Santaolalla infuses this disc with an edgy modernism. The bulk of these compositions have been arranged by composer Osvaldo Golijov, who seemingly brings a manic energy and a playfulness to everything he touches. Chamber music purists may scoff, but the rest of us will be busy dancing and thrilling to this exciting, genre-blurring Kronos project. --Jason Verlinde
Album Description
With 'Nuevo' - a project based entirely around Mexican composers, musical traditions and influences - the Kronos Quartet have delivered one of the most striking group odysseys to date. Produced by Gustavo Santaolalla, both an authority on Latin American art music as well as the most in-demand producers of rock en espanol, the album also features a host of guest artists from both the concert hall as well as the streets of Mexico. Housed in a slipcase. 2002.
Customer Reviews:
screeching mariachi's.......2007-01-09
I bought it for the one-armed grass-leaf player. It's worth it just for that, but the first track is enough to put you off the rest of the album. It gets better once the rhytms overtake the sound.
Good music, disappointing liner notes.......2005-12-07
At about 66 minutes, this recording is a better value than some of their CDs. But one almost constant complaint that I have with Kronos Quartet releases is their poor or non-existent liner notes. This release is especially guilty. There is a big, thick booklet of worthless photography--mediocre pictures reproduced poorly on cheap paper. Were they trying to throw some some photgraphers a bone? There is nothing about the composers (except their birth dates) or their music, or the musician's perspective, etc. And, since some of the composers are deceased, an opportunity was lost to discuss their music and their lives.
Very, very poor production decisions.
Amazing!!!!!!.......2005-11-05
If you by chance still don't know what Kronos`s is about remember that there are two types of chamber music ensembles: Kronos and the rest. So if you have in your mind the traditional sound, aesthetic of a string quartet, go for the rest (Alban Berg, Ittaliano, Melos, Emerson...) and forget Kronos. For if I had only one chance to apply the title- word "avant-garde", I would do it concerning Kronos. They are irreverent. Forget traditional repertoire (and Bartok is traditional for them). As far as I know they play modern music (Glass, Reich, Scnittke) or new repertoire like World Music. They play with amazing virtuosism and richness of textures. If you try to explore Kronos world, open your mind to a new, non conventional type of sounds.
So what is "Nuevo"? A diverse, impressive, multilayered (that is, there are several strata, several kind od compositions) portrait of Mexican music. A comprehensive landscape of Mexican music. But ... not exactly mexican music is what you hear in most of the tracks, but the Kronos' POINT OF VIEW, that is, Mexico through Kronos' glasses. For I don`t find a truly traditional Mexican track (perhaps only "Son Huasteca" and that before 12/12 are those which most resemble to a truly traditional "Mexican" sound). Almost everything in this rich album is a new way of listening to mexican music.
Why? Arrangements are varied and colourfull. Every track shows novelty and spontaneity, even in well known pieces like "Perfidia" or "Sensemaya". All in this CD is "Nuevo (New)": music that you have not listened before, no matter your knowledge on Mexican music!!
The type of music is quite diverse: classical (Sensemaya), TV music (Chavosuite), bolero (Perfidia), local music (Sinaloense), processional music (12/12), even dance music!!
The sound is also quite strange sometimes: the editor distorts some tracks in order to show the quartet as if they were listened through an old radio player. This is quite amazing!!! or listen to 12/12: quartet strings combined with recording of a traditional "ritual" music and fireworks. Also there are includede street noises between the tracks, thus creating a kind of "leitmotive", like a "Concept Album".
Let me say this: I don't care of mexican music. I don't know too much of it. Nor it is something I love. What I like of this CD is not Mexican music legacy but WHAT KRONOS DOES WITH IT. I think they could do the same with every (rich) music culture in the world. The reason why Mexico is chosen perhaps is a personal experience of Kronos' members (as I have red in an interview).
Booklet contains track details, a lot of credits but not a single word of commentary about the music (a pity).
More than great Mexican music, this is a great Kronos show. If you like Kronos or want to investigate what Kronos truly is and /or If you like mexican music, buy it!
If you don't like mexican music, buy it too!! You will think, as I do, that this Kronos release is essential.
f-u-n ........2004-05-27
this is a great album to listen to on a hot summer day at the beach,or any sunny activity in general.I must admit that I do enjoy the darker side of kronos' music more, but one truly can't help but grin when on the third or fourth track the music pauses for a sudden "yelp"!yes,it may sound a bit goofy and the more stern folks are certain to frown upon such playfulness in the "sophistocated"world of classical music, but this is a good thing.as another reviewer stated, the music really isn't very complex but that should be no obstacle for any kronos-loving individual.oh,yes-if you have children be prepared for them to go absolutly BONKERS when you play this!(finally veggietales can be given a rest!)
Mexican music performed by Kronos Quartet ??.......2003-07-26
I had to listen to it !
Well, first I must say that it is very rewarding to find such a talented international ensemble to interpret our music. Some of the tracks are really outstanding. Particularly 12/12 and the Chavosuite.
But, in the other hand, the purposely out of tune interpretation of El Sinaloense is deceiving (do our Mariachis sound so terrible ?) and the solo wistle in "Perfida" really destroyed the sesibility and charm of this melody. I mean, why on earth did't they play it with a violin instead ?
For the rest, it is a very original album, and it shurely reflects the impression that causes our culture. The inclusion of live sounds in a marketplace and of the "carretonero" buying old shoes and clothes, makes a specially beautiful ambiance.
It is also an album with a very humorous approach. (Some of the tracks sound like if they had been arranged by P.D.Q. Bach !) Get it if you are looking for something original and different, but please buy something else if you really want to know what mexican music is.

This collection includes Ernesto Lecuona's complete 1954 recordings plus a series of 78s made in 1927-28. Ten of the recordings were previously unreleased. This is a lot of lightweight Cuban piano music to deal with at once, but it's definitely worth doing. Lecuona's music, which is having a major revival, may not be important. But it's consistently charming and entertaining. The 78s, which sound surprisingly good, reveal even more of a virtuoso than do the later recordings, but throughout we hear playing that expresses the spirit of the music extremely well. And yes, the famous Malagueña is here, sounding very sexy. --Leslie Gerber

Lecuona Plays Lecuona.......2007-05-12
Oh Boy! What can I tell you about this magnificent collection of musical jewels from our Maestro Lecuona. I bought the original Long Playing Record back in the 50's in my country.
I purchased it again shortly after my arrival to the US, and I was lucky enough to buy it on DVD from Amazon, once I found out they had it.

Lecuona the Cuban pianist is Great!.......2005-08-17
In my opinion this is one of the best CD's from Lacuona, Most of his piano compositions are recorded here (original ones), What, Ms. Leslie Gerber forgot to mention is that Mr.Lecuona was a band leader,"Lecuona and the Cuban Boys", remembers him? Or maybe she does not have sufficient information about him. The music from Lecuona still is very well alive today. I came across his recordings on my own, no one ever told me about this great pianist. I happened to hear the Malague?a by another great Cuban composer and band leader Perez Prado (The Real Mambo King) in one of his albums and Lecuona was the author. That got me interested in him. I'm pretty sure that Ms.Leslie Gerber does not mean any harm trying to put this composer down. It's just that maybe all she knows is Gerber baby food stuff!
The Cuban Chopin.......2004-06-18
What a great album and great value. There is music here that will make you smile, break your heart, inspire you, and Lecuona's skill is breathtaking. If you enjoy classical piano music (with a Cuban/Spanish influence), you'll love this. No, it doesn't display the virtuosity, complexity or seriousness of Lizst, Chopin or Beethoven, but it's fun, beautiful, dramatic yet accessible. You'll love it.
Lecuona, the musical genious . . . . ........2002-10-16
I feel compelled to identify myself first. I am Cuban born who arrived in the US in 1960 at the age of 16 years old. I am a US citizen since 1965 and a US Army Veteran of Viet Nam. I will die defending the right Ms. Leslie Garber has of expresing her opinions. But what I will not condone is her ignorance. To say that Lecuona writes "lightweight Cuban piano music" and that "Lecuona's music may not be important" is to show ignorance. A musician that composes GREAT music in several genres of the music world, a musician that in all genres has highly succesful pieces, and, a musician that after many years, (70-80 years) is still heard and admired can not be called other than MUSICAL GENIOUS and a CLASSICAL MUSICIAN. His music is so beautiful that it will live forever. From his Afro-Cuban compositions, to his romantic popular boleros, to his valses, to his Zarzuelas, Lecuona demonstrates once and again, time after time his immense musical talent. His Afro-Cuban "Cafetal", his romantic boleros "Noche Azul" and "Amapola", His vibrant and colorful "Comparsa" and "Andalucia", his classical Valses, just to mention a few things, makes Lecuona to stand together with the great musicians of the world. The fact that Hollywood made a film around "Estas en mi corazon" and that great singers, like Placido Domingo, want to sing Lecuona's music speaks immensely well of Lecuona/s greatness. The fact the popular instrumental orchestras like Faith, Conniff, Mantovani, Cugat have arranged and interpreted a lot of Lecuona's music also says a lot about Lecuona's versatility in his work. Lecuona is probably important to many millions of people and his music is certainly not lightweight. And if the only thing Ms. Garber can say about "Malaguena" is that "it sounds very sexy" is to demonstrate that she does not know a thing about music. It definitely does not give her the priviledge of commenting about Lecuona's music.
LECUONA IS NO LIGHTWEIGHT.......2002-02-27
Lecuona is one of the most important composers of Latin-America. He is by no means the "unimportant" and "lightweight" Leslie Gerber (whomever that may be) claims, having been hailed for performances of his earlier (and "less mature") works by the likes of Maurice Ravel.
In my opinion the highlight of the set is the devilish "La 32". It's also interesting to compare his interpretations of the same works at different times in his career, like the two recordings of "Por que te vas?" and "Amorosa", especially keeping in mind that Lecuona seldom notated and improvised quite frequently, leaving the transcription work to his students.

Eroica Trio, Classical Music Angels.......2006-03-19
The album, "Best of Eroica," demonstrates with heavenly beauty this group's musicality, technical skill, and deep understanding of the music they've chosen. This album is a "must" for anyone who enjoys piano trios and wants to relax surrounded by transporting sound.
Spirited style in a generous album--4.5 stars.......2005-12-09
This generous album (nearly 75 minutes long) contains 14 selections from the award-winning trio's other CDs. Thus, the range of music is quite wide. The artists (Erika Nickrenz--piano, Adela Pena-violin, & Sara Sant'Ambrogio--cello), though accomplished soloists, meld their playing beautifully. The Albinoni here is the shortest of the four versions in my collection--played with spirit. The Vivaldi demonstrates their virtuosity. I think the viola shines in Brahm's lullaby. The Piazzolla pieces remind me of the concert at which I heard them play; it was spectacular. Still, a few of the pieces are not particularly to my liking--though they are played well. Also, as a baroque fan I'd like to see some Telemann, Bach, &/or Handel. Most of the pieces are very lively--not too relaxing or useful for meditation--but great for listening. But then, as a trio, they are chamber music oriented. Still, IMHO the order of pieces on the album could be improved. Overall, it's a very fine album though I like the baroque one better--just a personal preference, of course.
Electrifying.......2005-08-26
I saw them live a few years ago, and was captivated by their group chemistry and technical precision. One of my favorite modern classical groups.
Better still, buy the other CDs.......2005-05-27
As a compilation, the ladies have selected a few cuts from each of their 6 CDs to give any listener new to the Eroica Trio--named in homage to Beethoven's 3d "Eroica" Symphony, not the crass misreading offered by a previous reviewer--a singular treat, and thus serves as a good first disk. But it is a sampler of sorts, and while I think that all of their CDs are good and worth your attention, they do range in focus and style from tangos to the Baroque, to healthy doses of Beethoven, Brahms and Bach--so suit to taste. The 5 star rating I give this CD is really for the larger body of work that this disk draws from.
I was prepared to have a mean rant, however.............2005-05-07
These ladies can play!! The chemistry and emotional fire is what makes up for the corny "Erotica Trio" title, but I ask you-what would you do as a graduating classical musician to get noticed today? Our cities are riddled with out-of-work and under appreciated young classical musicians, and it's partly our fault for not telling everyone about this great art form.
One day we may see a renissance in the musical arts where knowing the works & composers of the classical cannon won't be so rare- just imagine.

Cafe Tacuba come straight out of Mexico City with a spicy blend of rock en Espanol, with Jamaican ska/reggae and African-American hip-hop sonic seasonings. And unlike their counterparts, they've managed to keep the critics, record companies, and their fans happy. This CD, which translates as Four Ways, is their first full release since 1999. Lead guitarist/vocalist Elfego Buendía, keyboardist Emmanuel Del Real, bassist Enrique Rangel and guitarist Joselo Rangel--along with R.E.M. and Beck percussionists Victor Indrizio and Joey Waronker--deliver a more raw, stripped-down sound compared to their critically acclaimed recordings Re and Avalancha de Éxitos. Their long-time producer Gustavo Santaolalla is at the helm, but on this go- 'round, the quartet also works with producers Dave Fridmann and Andrew Weiss, who both manned the boards for the bands, Ween, Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. From the high-powered video/single "Eo (el sonidero)" and "¿Qué pasará?" with special guest vocalist Rubén Albarrán (a.k.a. Elfego Buendía), to the philosophical "Mediodía," these tracks show that Cafe Tacuba is moving away from their alternative phase into a mature, Steely Dan type of mainstream sound. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

New direction for Cafe Tacvba.......2006-07-10
I own the other Cafe Tacvba albums (with exception of the "Revés/Yo soy") You know, with this band you'll have a diferent taste for every album, which I think is a great thing because they're always innovating with sounds and blending different styles in one cohesive mix. Prove of this is the "Re" album, an excelent mixture of rock, mexican rythms, boleros and even speed metal.
The good news is that this album is still different and innovative: Electronic samples and textures have been added to some tracks, giving a new and fresh sound to the songs of this band (like on "Encantamiento inútil", "Desperté")But we also have the "classic" Tacvba sound in gems like "Tomar el fresco", "Qué pasará", and "Eres" and the frenetic "Eo". But my favorite track here is the dreamy "Mediodía".
I only comlain about some "fillers" on this record (last two tracks and "Recuerdo prestado") I could've been better without these tracks, makig "Cuatro caminos" a solid and perfect production.
Just one little thing, this special edition come with a nice cardboard packaging. Hope this information will be helpfull.

Awesome.......2006-03-20
If you want to find a great spanish speaking band this is it. Cafe Tacuba is amazing and interesting. The styles are diverse and ever growing and provide a wide range of enjoyablilty. I reccomend this to everyone.
Not too good anymore.......2005-04-05
'Eres' is a bit too cheesy!!! This CD is not very interesting, look for their other CD's, it's been downhill since 'RE'.
Not bad!.......2004-07-24
I hadn't heard much of Cafe Tacuba before I picked up this cd, which had a sticker on it with a blurb comparing it to Radiohead's "OK Computer". Doesn't sound like Radiohead at all to me, but it's still really interesting and innovative. I have absolutely no idea what they're saying because I don't speak Spanish, but the music transcends that. It's upbeat, strange, and beautiful. If you want something that's a little different and fun, this is a good choice. Also, the song "Eres" is very pretty.

One-dimensional tango.......2007-03-04
While the technical aspects of this recording are beyond question, the nostalgic point of view the performers have chosen transforms these beautiful tangos in whinny pieces.... Tango is about melancholy, that's true, but it's also about machismo, and lacks anything but power.
These fine interpretations are nice to listen to as background music, but don't convey the power of the tango, and so, I must recommend anything else if you are looking for an introduction to this complex music. Piazzola's original pieces, for example, will knock your socks off, compared to the interpretations featured here. The only song I found to be worth on its own, is not a tango, but a beautiful danza by Alberto Ginastera. I have heard many versions of that song and this one is my favourite one by far....
Kneel in the Church of Tango.......2004-01-01
There may not be candles or pews or stain glass windows, but the realm of Tango has become an object of reverence for many. Most people have only heard the orchestral versions of this type of music and that is unfortunate. The original tango was a song - not a dance.
ALthough Piazzolla has made Tango accessible for the masses (and transformed it into a new creature in the process) it is Gardel and Salgan who hearken back to the roots of the movement. These are sultry tones, languid, erotic, passionate and exquisite. It is almost impossible to select any one as a favorite so I'll conclude that they all deserve a prize.
This is a Tango Bar........2002-12-13
Now you will know what it's like to sit, tears filling your already-empty glass, in a Tango Bar in Buenos Aires on a lonely night.
Outstanding!.......2002-03-04
This album contains the most beautiful, refined, and expressive tango performances I have ever heard. Not only that, but you CAN dance to them! The accordian playing here is truly fine and sensitive. Barenboim's sense of timing and rubato is always expressive, never excessive, and seems contagious to the rest of the ensemble. I listen to this over and over again and never get tired of it. An unexpected bonus to this double bass aficionado was Contrabajedo's inclusion on this CD. Bravo! You need to buy this CD immediately.
Tango for the world.......2002-03-02
This is music at its best: relaxing, precise, melodic, thoughtful, romantic, and entertaining all at once. You will never get tired of this album. If you enjoy the finer things in life, this is a MUST. There is not a single annoying piece in the whole album. I rate it among my favorite albums of all time. Truly timeless. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
I LIKE JULIO.......2005-10-27
THE FIRST SONG ON THIS CD IS FANTASTIC. THE REST ARE RATHER MEDIOCRE. I LIKE THE "TANGO" ALBUM BETTER.
a escucharlo cantar, y aun asi mantiene
su clase y estilo. Un disco fantastico y
lleno de romanticismo
A very pleasant surprise.......2002-07-01
I think a lot of Anglos are like me -- about the only song I knew by Julio Iglesias was that dopey duet he did with Willie Nelson many years ago. Nothing prepared me for the astonishing excellence of this album. The album moves smoothly from one song to the next, from one style to the next, and throughout Iglesias hypnotizes. He is so smooth, so darn cool, it just amazed me. This is the kind of album Bryan Ferry dreams of making. I don't speak Spanish so I don't understand the lyrics, but I surely understand the feelings which flow from every song on this superb disk.
Noche de Cuarto Lunas....Julio Iglesias.......2002-01-28
Hi Julio Iglesias Fans,
I would love to advertise being Julio's Numero Uno
Fan...but I am positive that there are millions of
Numero uno fans in this world that could tell exactly
how we feel about his music. He has a variety of very
happy, family life and sentimental love songs for everyone
not only in Spanish, his native language, but many other
languages available. A song for every occasion. I find
something special to relate to in my life in every piece
of music I listen to. I had the priviledge to meet him
in person in Illinois. He is charismatic and very easy
talk to. He is a family man, husband and lover. I have every
cassette, CD, book, and movie he has made. I will remain being
his Numero Uno fan. As an educator I love and admire his
music and I play it everyday of my life.
Come on Julio, we love you and want you to give us some
more of your great talented musical voice.
