Customer Reviews:
Best album of 1985.......2006-04-21
I remember when I first heard "Sentimental Street" in 2001, I was immediatley hooked, and as soon as I got the chance, I special ordered "7 Wishes" from a local record shop. At first, the only two songs on the album I listened to were "Sentimental Street" and 'I Will Follow You". I slowly worked my way to the other songs on the album starting in December with "Goodbye", and then "Four in the Morning" in March, then after that, "Interstate Love Affair", "Night Machine", the title track in 2003, and then I listened to the songs I hadn't heard yet in 2004. This is one of my all time favorite albums. "Sentimental Street" is Night Ranger's best song ever (much better than the overplayed Sister Christian). "7 Wishes" is right up there with anything by Journey, Styx, Boston, REO Speedwagon, and any other arena rock legends. Pick this one up!
Commercial Development.......2006-03-23
Night Ranger is the top student of melodic rock school. The band is made up of top-level musicians with each of them tend to play individually. Jack Blades did the difficult task of coordinating such talents into organized expert work. The band started career just when two key trends upset the music world. To become huge in corporate rock world the band must have either of two elements. Girly high-toned vocal just as Steve Perry, and Mickey Thomas to accommodate with synth-heavy music. Perfect command of keyboard-heavy pomp rock arrangement just as Boston did. Alan Fitzgerald with masterful command of keyboard made one element cleared. But the band does not have the second element high-toned vocal. Jack Blades and Kelly Keagy co-vocaled and supplemented the lack each other. There is another deadlock the band must pass. To become commercially huge they must have ballad hits. Survivor did make rock hit EYE OF THE TIGER but as Jim Peterik himself admits this was just the exception rather than rule. Previous album with top 5 ballad hit SISTER CHRISTIAN and the band cleared the last obstacle. So the third album with some ballad hits is the natural outcome. Why can't they rival with Journey, Toto, Survivor and Def Leppard and pursue what they were trying to achieve?
CRITICISM FROM CORE FANS
However, rock fans who lauded them as some kind of metal rock saviors began to complain about too many ballads particularly GOODBYE. Japanese metal fans who think of JUDAS PRIEST as their rock god and keen readers of BURRN magazine in particular wrote them off as gone badly as AIR-SUPPLY sort of junks.
ERRATIC SONG ARRANGEMENT
Album song arrangement made the ire of the fans worse I think.
Why Goodbye is the last song of the album? It's not a good choice. Yeah some metal bands do this but with much caution. To set the last song ballad like the ballad must be bombastic. Good example is recent Pride of Lions GIFT OF SONG and Fair Warning's Four ending song FOR THE YOUNG or their rival Survivor's I SEE YOU EVERYONE in Vital Signs. NIGHT MACHINE is supposed to be the last. They should have adopted the "LUMP CATCHY SONGS" rule and made "goodbye" locate the first half of the album. Just as Survivor's Vital Signs did why not fourth track rather than last?
ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS
FACES: Dramatic intro warmly vocals, excellently structured.
THIS BOY NEEDS TO ROCK: Fun uptempo rock track answering Bryan Adams's KIDS WANNA ROCK?
I WILL FOLLOW YOU: My top favorite emotional power ballad.
INTERSTATE LOVE AFFAIR: Upbeat rocker essential for concerts.
NIGHT MACHINE: Yeah. That's what Night Ranger is all about.
GOODBYE: Nice power ballad but not the song for the last track.
Since this album's severe feedback the band trying to reorganize just in vain. They made great last album of the 80s MAN IN MOTION but after that the band called it quit and until 97 reunion fans felt sorry for the loss of one of the greatest rock bands on earth.
Verdict: Excellent album. Forget power ballad hits. Rockers are super.
Rating: 94 out of 100. Minus three points for "Goodbye" issue.
Recommended for mid 80s pop fans who like Survivor, Foreigner, Toto, and Def Leppard.
Night Ranger.......2005-09-09
Is is the first Night Ranger C.D I have brought for 17 Years since Big Life. Not a bad album the best track on their is seven wishes. The album is far better than Big Life a with a lot rock .
Great old favorite.......2005-08-04
I had this on cassette when I was a teenager. I "dragged main street" to it many a night. A great old time favorite. If you like/liked Night Ranger, this is a great album.
Night Ranger's Last Great Studio Album.......2003-12-21
7 WISHES is Night Ranger's last great studio album, and it also contains their final Top 40 hit ("Goodbye"), although no one knew it at the time. Consistency starts to become a problem here, but overall this is a great album. If you have DAWN PATROL, MIDNIGHT MADNESS, 7 WISHES, and LIVE IN JAPAN, you have the ultimate Night Ranger library.

Customer Reviews:
I discovered Sibelius with this CD.......2001-03-18
I'm a big fan of Mattila and of art song. But Sibelius was mostly unfamiliar to me (except for some of his symphonies) until this disc. I especially liked the final cut, Jubal. The accompaniment here is minimalist with Mahlerian touches. Mattila sings exquisitely throughout. If you like songs by Brahms, Mahler, or Strauss, expand your knowledge horizon with this CD.
Beautiful Voice - Beautiful Music.......2000-11-17
I especially liked the songs "Var det en dröm?" and "Norden", but all of these songs are beautifully sung throughout. Karita Mattila has the perfect voice for these songs. Her voice is soft, yet strong, and the cool color is used well especially in "Norden". It is also clear that she understands every word she is singing.
This record is also a great introduction to Sibelius songs, for those who are not already familiar with them. There are also wonderful recordings of Sibelius songs by Jorma Hynninen, Tom Krause and Anne-Sofie von Otter, that I highly recommend.

Album Description
The towering tree at Rockefeller Center, midnight mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, Bing Crosby singing White Christmasthese are among the core snapshots of an American Christmas. A holiday that fuses the sacred and secular, high-gloss entertainment and deep spiritual meaning, Christmas in the United States is built on longstanding rituals at the same time as new riffs are continually being invented. It has its own distinct identity, and in one of the most culturally diverse societies on the globe, a Christian holiday has risen as the country's most prominent.
The striking array of works conducted by Judith Clurman on this recording open a window onto the many facets of a contemporary Christmas. Most of these compositions were first performed at one of the annual Christmas-tree-lighting ceremonies at Lincoln Center, where Clurman has directed music-making since 1992, and many were commissioned for those events.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful affirmation of American invention.......2001-09-30
Judith Clurman knows how to work with singers, and the sound of her chorus is sumptuous on this CD. Just what you might want to have playing as the family is gathering for the holidays. And in a time of questioning and re-examination of what makes us Americans, the fact that this CD represents a wide variety of American composers doing their best to connect to beloved traditions makes this CD a winner. Hats off to New World for making a CD the record companies never would have...

Expectations can be daunting for a pop musician, and never more so than when one is the progeny of a bona fide rock legend. Shana Morrison, daughter of Van, has stepped out of her father's shadow with her Bay Area indie band Caledonia, and the range of vocal ability showcased here indicates she's been listening as much as singing. But if anything, her chameleonic charms as a vocalist occasionally get the best of her as she segues effortlessly from Alanis-esque pop to the neo-R&B of Badu to a breathy touch of space-sister Macy Gray on "Day After Yes." But if she's to someday have newcomers compared to her, it may ironically be on the strength of the same bluesy, gospel-tinged style that's so often carried her father's music to transcendence, especially when she simply opens up and lets her voice seek its genetic roots on performances that range from the pop-smart single "Smoke in Bed" to the melancholy "St. Christopher" to a moody reinvention of her father's own "Naked in the Jungle." Pater Morrison lends his voice and distinctive harmonica coloring to a cover of his own "Sometimes We Cry" that's both the perfect gospel flip side to "God Must Love Me" and a contrast to the compelling Eastern sitar-pop of "Connection," the album's bonus track, cowritten with Narada Michael Walden. --Jerry McCulley

Style and Ability in Spades!.......2005-01-15
Shana is the daughter of the legendary Van Morrison, and bound to make as big a name for herself in the industry as her father did. She began her music career in 1993 and has come an incredible distance in less than ten years! This woman has a powerful voice, able to be forceful and aggressive, or soft as silk - and still she has a wonderfully wide range. Compelling would be an apt one word description for Shana. She's cutting her own way in this business, and shows a great deal of promise.
This is Shana's third disc, and her debut for the Vanguard Label. It is a potent blend of heady music, and momentous lyrics that leave a lasting impression, a powerful release for a debut. Shana describes her music "country and blues oriented pop" and it is a fitting description. Folk rock and soul would have a place in that, as well, I think.
I Spy is the opening track, and reminded me immediately of Alanis Morissette. The vocal style is quite similar, and the music was also striking parallel chords within (if you'll excuse the pun). Sadly, the entire song just came across as a "take off" on an Alanis tune. This doesn't mean it is not a great song, it just had an already-been- done-feel to it in my mind. The clincher was when my other half asked me when Alanis had put out a new disc.
The title track, 7 Wishes, is a rather soft and poignant piece. It is a look at human nature, and the wishes for making a life better... the first of which is for a real friend. Shana's delivery of this piece is filled with a quiet intensity that reaches deeper than the gentleness would lead one to believe.
Day After Yes is a funky track that showcases some of Shana's versatility where her vocals are concerned. From sultry and passionate, to aggressive and controlling, she runs the gamut. I'd say Shana could give any female vocalist out there today a great run for her money, and many of those who came before - including Janis Joplin. This is a lady with style and ability in spades!
Apparently, Van Morrison wrote two of the thirteen tracks on this disc, and he joins his daughter on Sometimes We Cry. So for all you Van Morrison fans, there's a bonus. Shana should be enjoyed for her own talents though, and not for whose daughter she is.

No mistakes here. She has a lilting, sexy voice. Sure it helps to be Van Morrison's kid, but this is just really, really good stuff. Sadly, I would not have even known to buy it were she not Van's kid, but this is a worthwhile addition to anyone's music collection no matter who she is. Good beats, good rhythyms, memorable tunes. It's all here. There might be one dud song on the CD, but 90% of it is great. Not too many CDs you can say that about. Don't bother comparing her to dad or anyone else because it doesn't matter.
The Voice!!.......2002-07-28
Her Dad is known as "The Voice," but now her time has come
I put Seven Wishes on my changer, and the healing has begun
From the catchy hook in "I Spy" to the sitar inflected "Connection"
There's a juicy sandwich in between on Shana's new production
Take your pick, or may I suggest some of my faves
"A Song for the Broken", surely is one - nothing but raves
Next up is "St. Christopher", Shana breaks your heart
Her voice, strong and beautiful - time and space stand apart
"Sometimes we Cry", another gem, Shana makes this song her own
The help from Dad was lovely, but her voice is now full blown
"Would I Could" and "Day after Yes" should climb the pop charts
"Cherry on Top", a naster rocker invokes pop tarts
"God Must Love Me", a testifying spiritual rocker
On this one, Shana don't need no help in finding Heaven's knocker
The whole CD smokes in bed
Our wishes - more than seven granted
With "The Voice" and amazing range
Her future is securely planted
The thing that irks is the comparison
To Alanis, Macy and Jan
When none of the above come close
to the "The Voice" of Shana Morrison.
Keep on listening!!.......2002-05-24
The first time I listened to this cd, I did not like it. I found the lyrics trite and it sounded to me like Natalie Imbruglia. However, the more I listened, the more I loved it. I still think the lyrics are full of cliches, but mostly, the songs are just too infectious to make me care. My favorite song is "The Day After Yes," an excellent 'girl power' song about a one night stand. Also, "Mother" is a bit syrupy, but in the end it is a sweet tribute to a parent. Give it a few listens and I swear you won't take it out of your player!!
Move Over, Dad..........2002-04-18
As Van Morrison's music continues to reflect a serious lack of focus and effort, along comes his daughter Shana Morrison to give us back that strong, R&B/Blues-y voice that her father once thrilled us with over 30 years ago.
Shana's last record, "Everybody's Angel", gave us a glimpse of an artist struggling to come to terms with the enormous legacy and gift she's been given. The songs "Joey" and "Everybody's Angel" made this listener hope that Shana would bear down and find her own powerful voice, both in singing and songwriting.
Now, with "7 Wishes", Shana shows us what she's fully capable of: strong, pop-oriented radio-friendly songs like "Smoke In Bed" ... rhythmic, guitar-based numbers like the soulful, Macy Gray-ish "I Spy"... and tender, moving ballads such as "Would I Could", a song reminiscent of the best of Sarah McLaughlin or Jann Arden.
With songs as good as these, it's hard to see why Miss Morrison would bother to include 2 of her father's songs. One would have been plenty; her cover of Van's "Sometimes We Cry" is an unqualifed success, touching and tender, without being sappy in the least.
Credit Vanguard and her producers with surrounding Shana with excellent musicians here, especially the ineffable Sonny Landreth on some of the most lovely slide-guitar work this side of Ry Cooder. But the superior musicianship is merely a frame for the picture: Shana's voice -- shimmering, soulful, playful, and sexy -- is what brings me back to "7 Wishes" over and over.
