For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Waste of money.......2006-01-12
Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

Great Music Compilation.......2005-08-15
This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.
If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11
Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.
A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23
In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.
A great compilation.......2005-02-09
This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

AC is one of the best bands ever. This is not their best album ever, but it is still amazing enough to get 5 stars. Their cover of American Woman is like 100billion times better than the original and better on an infinite level than Lenny Kravitz or any song that he has ever done. Seth Putnam is the best screamer of any core or genre hands down. He even busts out some high girly like vocals in Flower Shop Guy just to get you all wussified before he pummels your eardrums with the abomnination that is his scream. If you like this album and enjoy the humor within, check out Northern Impaled Moonforest...they are the best band ever.
How can it get any better ?.......2004-07-23
I been support this genre for a while now and im happy to see how it have grown. A.c. is an band that plays the best grind has to offer without a doubt in my mind! 40 more reasons is by far my favorite album done by ac. Grinding the hell out of you nonstop!!!
possible the most artistic album ever.......2003-04-20
When i first heard this album i was drawn by its subtle beauty. But as i listened more closely i was intreged by its hard struggle for life. Actually thats [baloney.] its loud a pain in the old beehind and dangerous to little girls, little boys, men and women. how great. something different from the usually [junk]...BR>indeed a great step forword for man. long be the binge drinking singer that now is a taxi driver for the ones he hates.
Not there best effort.......2003-01-08
I'm a big A.C. fan, i have most there releases in one form or another. This album was one of the last ones i picked up, and was one of the most disappointing. Don't get me wrong, i think it was good, but pales in comparison to its to cd predicessers(sp?) - morbid florist and everyone should be killed. the main reason i didn't like this album was its volume level, for some unkown reason this album plays at a considerably lower volume than all my other a.c. albums, to me alomost ruins. This record however was a success in helping A.C. transistion from noise to grind. I would recommend this album to any A.C. fan, any person looking for an introduction to the band would be safer with morbid florist.

Customer Reviews:
All of Gene's UK hits up to 1973.......2005-03-11
Gene Pitney had many hits in both Britain and America, not always with the same songs. There is a double-CD that includes all his hits in both countries together with a selection of with album tracks and B-sides, but this collection focuses exclusively on his British hit singles - all twenty of them up to 1973. It does not include Blue angel (a minor 1974 hit) or the new version of Something's gotten hold of my heart (with Marc Almond) that gave Gene his only number one hit - somewhat belatedly - in 1989.
I'm gonna be strong, Twenty four hours from Tulsa, That girl belongs to yesterday, I must be seeing things, Looking through the eyes of love, Princess in rags, Backstage, Nobody needs your love, Just one smile and the original solo version of Something's gotten hold of my heart all made the UK top ten - none of the other tracks came close although Somewhere in the country just made the top twenty.
If you just want Gene's UK hits in their original form - no album tracks, no B-sides, no American-only hits, no Marc Almond - this is the compilation to buy.
As another reviewer suggested, this is unlikely to appeal to Americans but may appeal to expatriates who lived in sixties Britain but now live in America. There's a lot of Brits living in America and I guess that's why it's available here.
So Let the Brits Buy It.......2005-02-17
I count FIVE USA hits. You'll find the other USA hits on another compilation. Steer clear unless you're a Pitney freak.

Album Description
In the 30 years between leaving the Kingston Trio in 1968 and recording this CD, singer-songwriter John Stewart has played with many fine backing musicians on stage and in the studio. But Darwin's Army was Stewart's first real group effort since the Trio, positioning himself as chief among equals in this project spotlighting many classic folk songs, both traditional and contemporary.
"I missed singing in a group, missed being one of three or four people singing together," Stewart explains. "Certainly this is a sound I personally wanted to get back to." So Stewart recruited wife and longtime singing partner Buffy Ford Stewart and rising young singer-songwriter-musicians Dave Crossland and John Hoke to tackle material as old as "Wild Mountain Thyme" and "Twelve Gates to the City," as nouveau classic as Bob Dylan's "My Back Pages" and Tim Hardin's "Reason to Believe," as surprising as "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "They Call the Wind Mariah," and as recent as Paul Simon's "Boy in the Bubble," Crossland's "Blood in the Fields," and Hoke's "Dreamland."
"The origin of a lot of the songs goes back to the Weavers and Pete Seeger," says Stewart, which helps explain why John broke out his banjo for some of the tunes, while adding his guitar and bass to others. Hoke contributes guitar and percussion, Crossland plays guitar, and Ford sings backing vocals and the occasional lead, as do Hoke and Crossland.
The quartet spans generations and musical boundaries with its renditions of songs old and new, with each cover version unlocking a fading memory of the original and appending an energetic freshness. "We've been told that it's not folk," explains Ford, regarding the newer songs. "Some people believe that unless it's a classic old song, it's not folk. That's bull. Folk music is written every day. Folk music grows."

Doesn't want to leave my car........2002-07-04
I agree with David, great travelling music. The Army is enjoying each other and having a blast. It is good to hear Buffy's incredible voice again. The only song I can do without is "Over The Rainbow", everything else is wonderful. I had to listen to "Mariah" over and over again, correct myself, I wanted to. "Dreamland" is the only new song but the old songs are pretty great too. "Don't It Make You Want To Go Home", the Joe South tune, they put their own twist on, same with "My Back Pages". I hope they record more together. I'm still smiling, the music put me in a good place and I like it there. They love the music and each other and it shows. The liner notes are excellent and should not be skipped.
Bittersweet.......2000-08-15
For those of us who were 60's children, for those who still keep a guitar in the back of the closet be prepared to go back in time. These were the first songs we heard and learned to play, the songs we have too easily forgotten. To hear'Wild Mountain Thyme'alone is worth the cost of the CD.When you add 'Silver wings' and 'Mariah' you have a true treasure. John gets better with age. I can only hope Vol. II is in the works. For true Folk Song lovers this is a 'must have'.
Nostalgic Disappointment.......2000-07-24
Billed as John Stewart's first group since The Kingston Trio, he should have quit while he was ahead. This is a case of pure crass commercialism, using John's name and several old Kingston Trio hits to bilk a few dollars from an unsuspecting public. John's voice is long gone, cracking and off-key. Buffy's rendition of Mariah is listless and dull. In all, the album sounds like a gagage band attempt to (unsuccessfully) make a first album. This material is clearly something that should be provided for free on MP3.com.
Lest I be accused of sounding like the inspiration for something like Rick Nelson's Garden Party, if John et. al. don't want to be compared with the past, they should drop the reference to The Kingston Trio, as well as the songs that helped to make that group famous.

Darwin's Army.......2000-02-13
This album is so much fun, especially for a John Stewart fan , but even if you are not. You can just play this album over and over. Great traveling music. An eclectic group of songs. Some old favorites that get you singing right along and some wonderful new songs and terrific harmonies. A must for any John Stewart fan and just pure joy for anyone else. You can tell they are having a blast playing together.
