Album Description
Sixty Six Steps--the second collaboration between guitarist Leo Kottke and erstwhile Phish bassist Mike Gordon--is both an homage to and an experiment loosely involving island rhythms. "There are these syncopations within Leo's guitar playing that twist around in a way that remind me of calypso," explains Gordon. "So this album took form as an experiment in my mind to see whether Leo's unique style of playing could be mixed with this kind of music I discovered and really loved when I was younger. And it worked far beyond my expectations." "Mike was the first to notice that aspect in my playing, and I think I'd forgotten it was in there," says Kottke. "No one else had done that. He's very intuitive that way."
The pair had already successfully tested the waters as collaborators with the album Clone, released in 2002. When they crossed paths in 2004 at a music festival, Gordon told Kottke that he really wanted to do an island experiment as his first project following the Phish era. Rehearsed in Costa Rica and recorded in the Bahamas, Sixty Six Steps is seasoned with the buoyant rhythms and freewheeling spirit of the tropics. It is not literally a calypso album but one that uses the calypso feel as a touchstone for a set of performances by two of the most imaginative and mold-breaking musicians on the planet.
Sixty Six Steps is a mixture of originals and interpretations performed in ways that are vaguely familiar yet largely without precedent. For instance, you'll find a cover of Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion" sung in a deadpan monotone and performed on baglama (a Turkish banjo/mandolin-type instrument), guitar and bass. Then there's a pastoral Pete Seeger composition ("Living in the Country") given a spritz of equatorial light and air. A twisted Mike Gordon original ("Stolen Quiet") professes mock gratitude for a partner's exodus from their shared abode: "The sheer amount of surface space increased around here/With your diet soda gone, there's more room for my beer." An equally offbeat Leo Kottke original ("Balloon") features such lines as "When the raccoon steals the cheese behind Pandora's other box/Or the one you love is shopping for a helmet made of rocks/Balloon, balloon, balloon..."
Incidentally, the title Sixty Six Steps is taken from a sign at the base of a staircase leading to what is reputedly the highest point on the island. The steps curve around and go to the top of the hill, which is a great spot from which to view the sunset. In its own way, Sixty Six Steps winds and ascends to a point from which the listener can savor some truly unique musical vistas.

Forget The Whiny Naysayers! This is GREAT Music!.......2007-07-21
If you play music in your car, your boombox, or your home audio system, you will love this CD! If you're part of the "new" generation of whiny, self-indulgent, music-should-be-free clowns who makes multiple copies and believes there is nothing wrong with stealing music, then you'll be crying like an ex who got the credit cards cut off!
Leo Kottke has been giving his fans aural pleasures for decades and this CD is no different. His impeccable musicianship, arrangements, and songwriting skills will keep you enthralled from the opening track. I wasn't familiar with Mike Gordon before this CD but the two of them mesh harmoniously and give an updated sound to Kottke's music.
Wow, AMAZING album! But, don't buy it because it's Sony DRM. Period. Sorry, Mike!.......2007-06-16
Mike will probably leave Sony after this, just like Trey did. Notice how Sony got into trouble with their illegal "digital rights management" virus spyware using Trey's album as a guinea pig... and Trey's next album was released elsewhere? Good for Trey! (BTW, I bought the Shine Dual Disc w/ bonus DVD for $[...] and there was no drm on it, so Sony REALLY fudged up there, huh?)
My guess is Mike will do the same thing-- leave Sony. I am positive Mike wasn't asked if this "copy protection" was okay by him. I'm sure Mike would've said no. He may be contractually obligated to put out another album, but if not, Sony can probably kiss another artist bye-bye! :-) Taste the curb, Sony! Oh, you like that? How's it taste, huh? You like the curb, Sony?
That being said, this album is PHENOMENAL! I am floored by it (and truly sad I wasn't able to support Mike by buying it brand new from the store). This won a Jammy award and I can see why.
This album is truly right up there with the best early 70s Grateful Dead acoustic stuff and the best mellow Phish stuff. I absolutely LOVE this album!!!
So, how can you hear it, since you don't want to support Sony and their illegal copy protection shenannigans?
Simple!
1. Buy it USED.
2. Make mp3s with an mp3 player/recorder such as MobiBlu's B-153 which is $[...] for a 2GB player/recorder. (Do not risk infecting your computer with Sony's virus/spyware drm copy protection crap all over this disc. You have no reason to trust these jerks.)
So, if it's USED and has worn out its copy limitation feature, it doesn't really matter because if you want to record it to mp3s, you can just use an mp3 player/recorder.
I bought mine USED. I popped the CD into my stereo-- it plays fine! And if I feel like listening ot it on the go, I can easily plug the MobiBlu mp3 player into the the headphone jack of the stereo (or line out jack), press "record" on the mp3 player and make my own 192 bitrate mp3s from the stereo.
Using this method, you don't have to worry about Sony's ILLEGAL drm tactics.
You won't have to reinstall Windows or uninstall the rootkit spyware.
You won't have to WORRY about Sony's unethical, illegal and generally STUPID business practices.
You won't have to support these crooks.
I LEGALLY purchased the album and I can LEGALLY make mp3's out of it if I want using a simple mp3 player.
And Sony made no money from the deal.
Sony's 2006 profits were way, way down and I am very happy about that. F them.
I'm very happy about sticking it to Sony. i'm not so happy about sticking it to Mike, but I've given him plenty of support over the years and will continue to check him out on tour.
GREAT ALBUM! Just wanted to say that once again!
Amazon review right on, but spotlight's got it wrong.......2006-10-18
This is a delightful recording and musically even better and more fun than their first CLONE. (the whole formating/copyright protection issue doesn't concern me as I don't try to copy or play it in my computer and is not germane to these reviews, but it does seem Sony has gone too far with their solution) I love the originals (songs and instrumentals) and the covers and the sound of these guys playing in their loose, playful, virtuostic, calypso influenced way reminds me of the great stuff David Lindley and Wally Ingram have done... This is happy, fun easy listening yet highly skilled music. My only complaint is that the percussionist Neil Symonette didn't get equal billing. He really helps make this a great recording.
Don't let the technical comments distract you from the important stuff, if you like the great MUSIC these guys make (alone or together), you'll love this one too.
Five stars for the music. No stars for the virus........2006-09-15
This is a tough one to review because it is difficult to separate the music from the copy protection. Tempted as I might be to speak from a soapbox about the latter, I won't. Many of you don't want to or don't need to hear about that. Those of you who do can find the whole business laid out pretty well in the other reviews.
Musically, this CD is simply terrific. Having listened to it several times I do not grow tired of it. It contains some of the most masterful acoustic guitar work that you will find anywhere. The sound is not overproduced. It comes across as down home and easy to listen to but the genius is there, plain to hear.
That having been said, there are issues and here are the facts. If you put this CD in your PC it will secretly install files that can harm your computer. This fact is beyond dispute. Sony/BMG has agreed to a class action settlement for damages caused by several dozen CD's including this one. If you own this CD you have until Dec. 2006 to file a claim for $7.50 cash payment or a free album download. Check the web for details and a list of other CD's involved. Enough said.
So if you play this CD in your stereo you'll be just fine. Keep it out of your PC though unless you fully understand the risks. If you must use this CD with your PC, I suggest that the safest way to do so would be to wrap the CD securely in a plastic sandwich bag for protection before inserting the disk in your CD drive. If you do that your listening experience might not be as pleasurable, but at least your system will be protected from infection.
Brilliant CD; ignore the foo-foos............2006-07-21
Okay, so it has copyright protection; it still plays, and this is quite possibly the best CD I have heard all year (and I have heard a lot). My only complaint is that they do not give equal billing to the percussionist, Neil "Goat Hooves" Symonette. The last Kottke-Gordon effort had some great moments, but with the addition of Symonette, this baby just hums along like my VW Beetle on biodiesel. It sounds warm and inviting, like a real group, as opposed to a couple of virtuosi who got together in a studio. Great selection of songs and a wonderful coherency throughout the entire CD. Seriously, ignore the pretentious, self-righteous, foo-foo, nancy boys who would rate such a wonderful CD as this based on their Freudian-technological issues rather than the music. May they be sentenced to an eternity fixing Leo's car!

Good collection but missing some key songs.......2007-05-17
I realize people are insisting this is not a greatest hits, but how can you claim to have a cross-section of his work captured here when you don't include anything from one of his albums, "Pictures At Eleven"? Sure, maybe you miss a few of his popular tracks in order to get some of the B-side material, but let's get real here.
Definetely worth it........2007-01-25
Very good compilation and mastering of rare early songs and demos, and the best of Plant's solo career on a nice two disc package, though with a big omission in not including "In the Mood",one of his biggest radio hits and a fine 80's song to boot.
Great career retrospective with lots of previously unavailable/rare stuff on the second disc.......2007-01-04
With the reissue of his back catalog forthcoming (in March 2007 but also available now in the boxed set "Nine Lives"), it's tempting to see "Sixty Six to Timbuktu" as not that essential for fans of Plant. That would be wrong. This isn't a "greatest hits" compilation so much as a brief career retrospective of Plant's work before and after Led Zep. True, the first disc has many of his hits but its missing just as many in favor of more obscure stuff. Plant's clearly tried to assemble his best material (in his mind)in a single set.
The first set has many of the popular hits that Plant recorded after Led Zep disbanded. We get 15 songs that were either hits singles or received a lot of airplay when they were released. Fans that want an album sequence chronologically will probably be frustrated as Plant has placed these songs based on the feel and how they flow from one track to another (for example "Little by Little" from Plant's third solo album "Shaken 'n' Stirred" is the next to last track on the first disc).
The second disc is a joy to have. It features a pair of singles that Plant recorded with his first band Listen in 1965/6. These are followed by a pair of demos from Band of Joy where Plant first hooked up with fellow Led Zep alum Bonzo (John Bonham). It's petty clear he's on the album, too, as Bonham's bashing drums are as much an important part of the recording as Plant's vocals. "Hey Joe" recorded in 1967 as a demo (the same year that Hendrix released his definitive version) more than holds its own compared to Hendrix's version with slashing guitar but, more importantly, Bonham's powerful drums backing Plant's impassioned vocal. "Operator" is a pre-LZ collabortion with Alexis Korner that prefigures the blues performances that would dominate the first LZ album.
The rest of the CD is made up of one-off recordings that Plant did for various tributes albums and soundtracks. They're all fun and essential for fans. "Let's Have a Party" from the charity CD "The Last Temptation of Elvis", and "Hey Jayne" was a B-side for "I Believe" featuring Plant on vocals and sitar (!). Next up is a cover of the classic tune "Louie Louie" with Plant on lead guitar. "Naked If I Wanted To" is a cover of the classic Moby Grape song from that band's first album. "Little Hands" is also a cover of Skip Spence's song from the solo album "Oar" (Spence was a member of Moby Grape and also briefly a member of the Jefferson Airplane). "Philadelphia Baby" features Dave Edmunds playing lead guitar with the band that Plant assembled for "The Principle of Moments". This track was a song recorded in 1983 but finished in 1985 and appeared on the "Revenge of Porky's" soundtrack. "21 Years" is a collaboration that Plant did with guitarist Rainer Ptcak and "Rude World" is from Ptcak's album featuring Plant and Jimmy Page on guitar. "If It's Really Got To Be This Way" is from a tribute album to Arthur Alexander. "Let the Boogie Woogie Roll" comes from Plant's appearence on Jool's Holland's "More Friends" album while "Life Begins Again" dates from a collaboration with Afro Celt System. The album closes with a live performance of "Win My Train Fare Home" performed in of all place Timbuktu with the Strange Sensations Plant's latest backing band.
This is well worth picking up for fans of Plant with the second disc of previously unavaiable songs. I also forgot to mention that a previously unreleased track appears on the first disc as well. "Upside Down" is written by the same team that wrote Plant's hit "Heaven Knows". This is a nice companion piece to the remastered "Nine Lives" boxed set even if 15 of the 16 tracks on the first disc duplicate what appear on the remastered albums. Bravo Robert! A great career retrospective this will probably be best appreciated by fans who have listened to and collected Plant's work since his Led Zep days. He has a restless, experimental spirit as a musician/singer and it's very much in evidence here.
great "bonus" songs.......2006-11-28
First and foremost: who the heck said this was a "Greatest Hits Album"? the title isn't "The Very Best of Robert Plant" or maybe I'm just blind. For those of you whining cause his "greatest hits" aren't here, maybe you should read the liner notes where he says specifically that he DOESN'T want this album to be a "greatest hits" collection. He was reaching for more of a career retrospective, something to see how he's evolved over the years, not what's garnered attention. Anyway, even if you have all his studio albums, you must pick this one up, there's really only a few songs on here from his past solo albums, the rest are some great treasures that any Plant fan would love, sure they're not all like Zeppelin songs, but this isn't a Zeppelin album, sure they don't all sound like Plant's other studio songs, but we're not reviewing songs based on how similar they sound to past, present or future songs, but on how GOOD they are, something this album certainly is. Be sure to get your copy, Nine Lives should be filled with lot's of great bonus stuff as well.
Great Robert Plant 2 CD Set.......2006-11-10
I recommend Robert Plant Sixty Six to Timbuktu to any Robert Plant/Led Zep fan, because it has many great songs that Robert Plant has done throughout his solo career & it makes a great collection to the Led Zeppelin CD box sets as well!!!

These Brit-POWER "Pop"sters GREATEST HITS 1990-2003.......2007-04-02
I'll admit I am normally not a fan of GREATEST HIT albums; but to me - Four Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty Six Seconds: A Short Cut to TEENAGE FANCLUB...exceeded all my past expectations on that account. Many "Best Ofs" feature the band's recordings in chronological order from a debut through the band's last album, which may not have much variety in between. That is not the case for Teenage Fanclub though, they mix up and rearrange MOST of their best tracks on this Jam-packed 21 songs; clocking in at a GOOD 79 minutes worth of music!
So of course the band had to make some omissions, like "Metal Baby" - "December" - "I'll Make It Clear" and others.
It did however include my favorites: "Ain't That Enough" - "Star Sign" - "Sparky's Dream" - "Neil Jung" - "Radio" - "My Uptight Life", really all of them!
This is really all you need if you are at all interested in the absolutely brilliant songwriting skills of this trio: Norman Blake, Gerard Love & Raymond McGinley. Three talented minds heavily influenced by Big Star (you'll see the resemblance once you hear them) putting forth their best all on one Cd. 4766 Seconds...also include 3 new "hits" to add to this release(2003), along w/ 3 each from "Bandwagnesque"(1991) & "Howdy"(2001). There are 2 songs from "Thirteen"(1993)
< considered somewhat of a low point in the Fannies' career, but Thirteen has my favorite song "Radio" on it, also on this. Four songs...from "Songs from Northern Britain & Five songs from "Grand Prix"(1995)
If you are a fan, like me of Big Star #1 Record/Radio City, than I do believe you would REALLY like this. I still get chills once this Cd plays all the way through from opening track to closing track. - 5 STARS!
4766 Seconds of Pure Pop Genius........2005-03-10
4766 SECONDS is one of my all-time favorite cds, and in a world of dumbed-down popular music, Teenage Fanclub has never sounded better. This definitive "best-of" compilation is a work of pure pop genius. The band's warm, feel-good harmonies are reminiscent of a Sixties' band, a sweet blend of the Byrds, Beach Boys, and the Beatles, only with an edge, and the instrumentation is filled with fuzzy guitars, psychedelic riffs, and catchy hooks. The tracks on this compilation cd include "The Concept," "Ain't That Enough," "The World'll Be OK," "Everything Flows," "Star Sign," "Mellow Doubt," "I Need Direction" (my favorite song on the cd), "About You," "What You Do To Me," "Empty Space," "Sparky's Dream," "I Don't Want Control Of You," "Hang On," "Did I Say," "Don't Look Back," "Your Love Is The Place Where I Come From" (my second favorite tune), "Neil Jung," "Radio," "Dumb Dumb Dumb," "Planets," and "My Uptight Life." For the full effect, I recommend listening to this cd on an Apple iPod.

Simply the best!!!.......2004-11-10
I am not going to bother you lot with too many superlatives about this Scottish band. Needless to say there are ommisions to this 'Best Of' compilation such as Mount Everest and If I Never See You Again, and yet it is a quality retrospective of their work. They remind me of The Beach Boys, not only because of the close harmonies, but also the fact that a lot of the songs are very understated in tone. But also Nirvana, as they could prove just as comfortable with an accoustic guitar as an electric guitar. The MAIN reason why I purchased this album though is because of the 3 new tracks available on it. Of the three new songs I would have to rate 'Did I Say' as not only the best track on the album, but quite possibly one of the most beautiful and uplifting tunes of the last ten years by anyone. Forget Travis, Coldplay and all the other British music chancers of recent years, Teenage Fanclub are the real deal!
exactly what i was looking for.......2004-08-04
it's true: when placed up against some of the 70s punk and 80s college rock bands that influenced them so profoundly, teenage fanclub's 90s alterna-pop songs can sound hopelessly thin. but we can't fault the fannies for that. this is as good an assembly of guitar pop songs as any other band that ever saw a stage could put out. teenage fanclub did for me what matthew sweet never could: they made this inherently flawed (and often transparent) genre emotional and significant. i'm glad i got this record: it's sunny, it's catchy, it's uplifting, well-constructed, easy to listen to, and good for those nostalgia trips...and, let's be honest: it means i don't have to buy any more teenage fanclub records.
A brilliant collection.......2004-07-30
This is a well thought out collection of the band's music. A few songs are taken from each record, and so the less catchy songs from Songs of Northern Britain are placed alongside the very melodious earlier songs. The listener is thus aware of the increased maturity of the band with time. Songs like Your Love is the Place I Come From can be ignored on a single listening, but with a few listens, become favourites from the album. Rather in the same manner that Dylan's One Too Many Mornings can be ignored at first.
An essential piece of music for anyone who loves melodies and one of the best cds I've heard in a long time.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous Twofer.......2003-05-21
I originally bought this CD for the true stereo alternate take of Runaway, which, as the others have stated, is virtually indistinguishable from the hit version. This has since become a favorite of mine. I really never knew what a great musician Del Shannon was, and this CD showcases him at his best. The sound quality here is fantastic for the time period and is about as good as it's ever going get. If you like Del Shannon, Runaway, or are just looking for some great oldies, this is the CD to get. Highly recommended.
A real find!.......2001-12-18
If you love Del Shannon, get this CD because, being 2 of his original early 60s albums, you get several different styles of his early music - not just the hits. Also, it's a good place to get the very rare stereo versions of his songs. I never thought I'd hear "Runaway" and "Keep Searchin" in stereo! (NOTE: The stereo version of "Runaway" is an alternate take, but there's no really noticable differences.)
The LP tracks are much better than you'd think since Del Shannon was primarily a singles artist. There are some really outstanding songs I'd never heard, and the covers are magnifnicent: "Running Scared" by Roy Orbison, "Do You Wanna Dance" by Bobby Freeman, "Rag Doll" by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Several songs were originally recorded by Del and later became hits for other artists: "(Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame" by Elvis Presley, "I Go To Pieces" by Peter and Gordon.
Send e-mail to Taragon Records to encourage them to keep up the reissues of 60s artists' original LPs on CD!
I CAN'T BELIEVE I FOUND THIS.......1999-05-26
ONE OF THE FIRST ALBUMS I BOUGHT WAS 1661 SECONDS WITH DEL SHANNON. I PLAYED IT TILL I WORE IT OUT. KEEP SEARCHING AND STRANGER IN TOWN WERE THE 2 FAVORITES, BUT THE COVERS OF OTHER PEOPLES HITS WERE REALLY WELL DONE. I WAS SO HAPPY WHEN I WAS ABLE TO BUY THIS. THE RUNAWAY ALBUM IS A REAL BONUS. TOO BAD DEL WON'T BE MAKING ANY MORE MUSIC.
True Stereo - All Songs.......1998-07-19
Finding Dell Shannon's songs in true stereo has always been difficult. As I understand it, the original master tapes were lost a long time ago. The original stereo LP albums have always been one of the most valuable collector LP's. I was not aware the master tapes were ever found, but the CD insert states "All tracks stereo AAD from original analogue source". Interpret that how you want. This CD contains a typical compilation of Dell's early hits (24 tracks). I believe the stereo sound quality on this CD is as good as you will ever find for Dell Shannon.
