5 out of 5 stars Awesome, moving CD.......2007-07-31

I just purchased this CD Sunday after watching Jeremy perform live. This CD is amazing. Sweetly Broken was my favorite, but now it's the second track "Close". I love his vocals in this song, he shows his vocal range well. His songs are the kind of worship songs that move you to tears. I have to say that his CD does not come close to watching him live in concert. If anyone gets a chance to see him live you won't want to miss it.

3 out of 5 stars Great voice.......2007-06-09

Sweetly broken drew me to this cd. Great song at that, but much of the cd failed to impress me. But saying that, "sweetly Broken" demands a lot to live up to. Jeremy Riddle has a great voice and a great future. The album itself is not a bad album, in fact it does grow on you a little, but I did expect more.

5 out of 5 stars Several Five Star Songs on this CD.......2007-05-21

yes I love this CD. Especially great are song #3 and #7. Our radio stations have been playing Sweetly Broken for months and it's very popular. It is a great song. But I have to say that I love song #3 even more. It's my favorite song right now. This song is about awe of God in worship. It's about His grace. The musical tambre and vocal qualities express broken, humble and passionate intensity that is rare. It's a GREAT song.

I first heard this song #3 Stand in Awe at a conference in California. I was sent a free copy of this cd (cuz I'm a pastor I guess) and I started listening to it. Between the conference (where Jeremy led it live) and this cd I have been blessed over and over.

We keep this cd in our car right now and are listening to it on the way to the church office every day....and I've found that I can listen to Stand in Awe three times in a row and want to hear it again (am I hooked or what?). I don't like any of the other songs nearly as well, but most of them are really good. I just don't listen to a lot of worship songs repeatedly...but this one I can't get enough of right now.

FWIW-I studied music at Wheaton Conservatory of Music for a year before switching to pastoral training in college. I think I do have a good ear for musical quality..and Riddle has a raw and humble quality to his vocals that really fit well with worship music. I give this cd a five star.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2007-05-20

The music and songs on this CD are simply beautiful. The song "Sweetly Broken" will get etched into your brain forever once you listen to it. Powerful lyrics and excellent music.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE Jeremy Riddle.......2007-05-14

4 out of 5 stars Smooth grooves........2007-07-27

If you like your Smooth Jazz with smooth grooves, then this quality selection of tunes will deliver.
The groover "Steps To The Capital', "the opener "Food For the Dog" and the fine title song will get your head nodding to the mid-tempo grooves.
It is however the vocal tracks like the mid-tempo riff laden "Can we Get Together" and the infectious "Rain Down On Me" which capture you.
You will like also the ballad "Candle Light" and the gentle sawyer "Just For You".

4 out of 5 stars excellent r & b album from 1974........2007-04-01

this is a fun, horn-driven set of rhythm and blues. white boys (all but one, anyway) who at times sound somewhere in the stevie wonder neighborhood of things, at other times in the jazzier realm of r & b. very energetic, very at ease with this music, these are some outstanding musicians delivering a fine creation to the world. i wish i had talent.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite TOP CD ! ! ! .......2007-03-26

Urban Renewal is definitely my favorite TOP album... maybe not their most famous... but definitely the classic line-up at its peak.... tight, bumpin' and razor sharp from top to bottom... The year is 1975... Soul might have been going "disco-ey" elsewhere, but TOP was still a cutting edge soul powerhouse. As noted elsewhere, Garibaldi is absent on a few of the tracks... but nothing's missing from the groove... Pretty amazing considering that the Garibaldi/Prestia mix was and always has been a key element of a band best known as a "horn session" group... (actually, except for Prestia and Kupka, and for years Adams, other members of the horn section were constantly changing!) - - The truth though was that aside from their unique sound and arrangements, they weren't just a horn section band... and they didn't just have a tight rhythm section at the time of this recording (and on most of their other recordings.) On this album there's Lenny Williams, one of the greatest soul singers on the planet, whether he's singing funky or sweet soul and the virtually unimitable Chester Thompson on organ. Also, we mustn't forget Bruce Conte's sharp, punchy yet flexible rhythm guitar either - - and there are some unforgettable lyrics. - - The thing, however that holds this album together the most is TOP's ability to BUMP when it comes to funk, but do soul ballads in a BLISTERY way that only they could. - - Put simply, this album is mandatory music listening - - period... begs for repeated listens and gets better with age - - not just another great soul recording, but mandatory listening by a band that churned out hits, and also gained a reputation as "musician's musicians" at the same ime !

4 out of 5 stars Urban Renewal.......2006-01-18

This is classic TOP, reportedly Mic Gillette's favorite recording with the group. There are great, funky grooves and tight TOP horns and many memorable tunes. I rank this one just a half-notch below the Tower of Power release.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars.......2004-07-24

A really good CD. With great songs like "Only So Much Oil in the Ground" (great solo by Lenny Pickett). And "Willing to Learn" a GREAT song. This is a good CD. I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars SOUL RENEWAL !!!.......2003-07-16

Clearly, one of the monster group's best efforts. Despite missing Garibaldi, the drumming was superb. And the interplay between bass (Prestia) and drums (Bartlett), so critical to the TOP sound, didn't miss a beat. In Lenny Williams' swan song with the group, the public was left with this masterpiece in his wake. The environmentally conscious opener "Only So Much Oil" brings this compilation alive, from the sizzling B-3 opening riffs by Chester Thompson, to Lenny Pickett's amazing sax interlude in the middle, to the backing vocals to Lenny's amazing range throughout the song and on through the entire album. I'd previously thought their best album up to this point was "Back To Oakland", which is still a classic among fans. But I think for quality of music and the band's maturity level and confort zone they were feeling, this album ranks as ONE of their best. I put this on when I want to feel the raw power of horns, vocals, bass, drums, funk, and energy. Even the ballads are strong. Even the mid-tempo filler is a definite winner in "It Can Never Be The Same". The inimitable guitar solo at the end is totally killer. All of it isn't necessarily dance music --- but it's definitely funky!! A total winner of an album and one of the best this fabulous group has ever done.

Album Description

Relaxing, romantic, and inspiring, The Candlelight Guitarist™ performs a tapestry of gentle jazz and classical guitar styles. Music for Rest & Renewal (with nature sounds) is softly melodic music, with soothing sounds of nature: ocean, birds, rainfall, a stream and waterfall, fireside, and night sounds.

WIND AND WIRE, Minnesota Public Radio, KFAI 90.3 FM: "The Candlelight Guitarist™ album will probably surpass your expectations, as it did for me. Seldom do I hear music so perfectly balanced with nature sounds where the music is of such high quality - soft yet not syrupy, melodic but not shallow or sing-songy, sincere without being overblown or pretentious. ...Singling out more tracks is tough because the whole album is excellent. The pace is never hurried, thankfully. The words 'rest and renewal' are well-earned. However, I can't help but think that this album would also play well in a car during a leisurely drive through the woods or along the shores of a lake. ...If you're someone who enjoys acoustic guitar music...you can't go wrong with The Candlelight Guitarist's Music for Rest and Renewal. Powell's playing is gently dexterous and soulful (carefully balancing finger pyrotechnics with heart and sincerity)." ---reviewed by Bill Binkelman.

ABOUT THE NATURE SOUNDS Digitally recorded in stereo, each locale chosen for its peaceful ambience and soothing character. The music was inspired by the serenity of the nature sounds, and composed to be a melodic counterpoint. THE OCEAN: Huntington Beach, about 1/2 mile south of the pier (midnight, over two days). Santa Monica Beach, about 1/2 mile north of the pier, early Sunday morning. Malibu Beach, off Pacific Coast Highway. STREAM and WATERFALL: Winter Creek and Sturtevant Falls (Angeles National Forest). RAINFALL (after long dry spell), WITH HAWK, OWL and OTHER BIRDS: Big Tujunga Canyon WIND THROUGH TREES: Big Tujunga Canyon, after midnight. NIGHT SOUNDS, BIRDS AT DAYBREAK: The Verdugos, a mountain-desert area.

It is a great cd for relaxing and or meditating. I was looking for something with less music, but was perfectly happy with what I recieved. Different songs for different times of the day.

5 out of 5 stars Great music to work by.......2005-12-07

I rarely review music. But a copy of this album fell into my possession
(almost literally!) and I find it's great music when I want to write and
think. A very talented musician here.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly Peaceful & Rejuvenating.......2005-05-17

From the first gentle melodies on the instrumental album "Music for Rest & Renewal" to the final note, I feel transported to some of the most beautiful places on earth. Guitarist Bradley Powell, "the Candlelight Guitarist" infuses each of his original compositions with warmth and gentle assurance that all is well in the world. Flutes and nature sounds accompany acoustic guitar with such perfect ease and grace that I feel my heart rate and breathing noticeably becalmed. "Music for Rest & Renewal" is the perfect background music for anyone interested in receiving the benefits of sound healing.

4 out of 5 stars An Arc of Guitars and Gentleness........2005-03-29

"Moved by our nation's events," in the fall of 2001 guitarist Bradley Powell decided to create "a healing work for people" and "light a musical candle," the artist's website explains about this CD's genesis. Growing up in a family of inventors and original thinkers, Powell picked up his first guitar at age ten and later had the opportunity to study, inter alia, with jazz guitarist Joe Pass, Dr. Ronald Purcell (including one master class taught by Andres Segovia), and David Rose of "Little House on the Prairie" fame.

The twelve tunes presented here form a musical arc from Spanish melodies to inflections of jazz and classical harmonies, and from daybreak to nightfall and to the promise of another day. True to the project's title, they are mostly quiet in mood, charming in their very unpretentiousness; and soothing like a hot bath or an evening by the fireplace. While Powell's crisp, precise fingerstyle technique speaks to both the quality of his training and the extent of his talent, he realizes that this is not the place for six- or twelve-string fireworks a la Segovia (or, for that matter, California's own fingerstyle wizard, Alex De Grassi, or his cousin, Windham Hill Records founder William Ackerman). Instead Powell keeps it simple - deceptively so - both melodically and in terms of arrangement. Three tracks - "Waltz of the Clouds," "Rainy Day Canon" and "Tomorrow Is a New Day" - are soft, tasteful duets with the flute(s) and oboe of Gilberto Hildavio, and there is also an overall slightly more elaborate instrumentation on the last track; otherwise, this is mostly about the warm, gentle sound of classical guitars blending with the sounds of wind and water, of seagulls on the Pacific Ocean, and of owls and other birds in California's woods, mountains, and deserts.

Contacted by email, Mr. Powell was reluctant to give specifics as to the types of guitars and strings used in the recording, but kindly confirmed that most of the pieces are played in standard tuning, with the guitar tuned down to D for "Rainy Day Canon" and "Waterfall Cove." He also mentioned the place that both guitars featured on this CD have in his life: one, his everyday companion; the other, a guitar that has been in his possession since college and has been fine-tuned by the hands of luthier Jose Oribe.

Whether you've just been through a period of emotional turmoil, or had a bad day at the office, or are just looking for the perfect music for a few quiet hours at home: I'm sure you won't be disappointed in turning to this CD.

"There are two ways of spreading light - to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it." - Edith Wharton.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Mellow Sound.......2005-03-27

The talented and creative Bradley Powell is the Candlelight Guitarist. His music is original and some of the most soul soothing I have ever heard. "Music For Rest And Renewal" is just that. I often come home from work stressed-out to the max, put this CD on, and after a while the tension just flows away to the strains of his finger-style guitar. It rarely fails. Mr. Powell is accompanied, beautifully, by sounds of nature, including the ocean, birds, rainfall, a stream and waterfall, fireside, and night sounds, all digitally recorded on-location specially for this CD. The sounds are quite subtle and enhance the album tremendously. A blend of soulful Spanish, romantic classical, and gentle jazz, I often meditate to the music and sounds of nature offered here.

The artist features a quotation on his Website, by Ralph Waldo Emerson, which is extremely appropriate to the music he makes, "Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything that is beautiful; for beauty is God's handwriting -- a wayside sacrament. Welcome it in every fair face, in every fair sky, in every fair flower, and thank God for it as a cup of blessing." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

I highly recommend "Music For Rest And Renewal," especially for those who live in a big city, as I do, and are nature deprived.

From the 1960s to the '80s, the Crusaders--pianist Joe Sample, saxophonist Wilton Felder, drummer Stix Hooper, and trombonist Wayne Henderson--were a triple threat, with their Texas-based blend of jazz, R&B, and soul. Before they broke up, they produced a string of hits, including "Street Life" with Randy Crawford. This CD marks their long-awaited reunion, with their producer Stewart Levine and trombonist Steve Baxter filling in for Henderson. The recording is a back-to-basics project featuring the group's Houston-honed swing. Imagine Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with an R&B edge and you'll get this ensemble's grand grooves. Legendary rocker Eric Clapton lends his acoustic and electric guitar licks to the title track and on the funky "Creepin'." Gospel singer Donnie McClurkin and Sounds of Blackness lay down their God-gifted vocals on the inspiring "A Healing Coming On" and "Sing the Song." Some Tex-Mex flavored Latin jazz is delivered on "Viva de Funk." This date shows that these life-long friends can swing in all idioms. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars New Brand New.......2007-03-18

Although the band consists only of very fine musicians, for some reason, they would not interact musically well enough with each other; The Crusaders were never able deliver a consistent album start to finish; good music here and there; except this time; "Rural Renewal" is the best release ever for the band. With Eric Clapton as a guest guitarist, Joe Sample and Wilton Felder are simply amazing from start to finish. Releasing their first album 44 years ago, these guys are at top of their career today.
"Rural Renewal" is recommended for any new fan that is into Soul Jazz, Crossover Jazz, or Fusion. It is even more recommended for the old fans who thought that the Crusaders's history was over.

5 out of 5 stars Joe Sample fan becomes a Crusaders fan.......2007-01-25

I found Joe Sample before I found the Crusaders, even through the original Crusaders have been around longer in Houston. But, when Joe and the new Crusaders came to Houston when this album first came out, I bought the album, went to the concert as was hooked. You can hear Joe's heavy chords on his rhodes and wurlitzer in the background...but this is a team effort, with great a great horn section led by Wilton, and cool guest appearances. And Ray Parker, Jr. does a stellar job on guitar on the album (and was great at the concert too).

The first two tracks (Rural Renewal and Creepin') start great, with Eric Clapton guesting on the album (although Ray was great on them in concert). But Heartland and Viva Da Funk are my favorites, because of the blend of Joe Sample's keyboards, the outstanding horn section, tight rhythm and the subtly overlain guitars.

3 out of 5 stars A good one to add to the collection.......2005-10-19

in the mid '70's The Crusaders were my entry point into jazz. They were close enough to R&B and soul music that I could understand them-unlike the fusion Gods of the time and especially the "outside" jazz folks. Having four equally talented soloists reallly set them apart and the groove was deep and wide.

Fast forward to today. The Crusaders return with Rural Renewal. It's a different record from the classic sound. Without Wayne Henderson high in the mix it loses the brassiness found on records like Southern Knights and Scratch. Also for the biggest part the guitar tracks are laid down in the groove instead of screaming over the top of it. In particular I miss Larry Carlton and his ability to take over a song and take it to new places.

So do I hate the CD. NO-I THINK ITS REALLY GOOD. Sample and Felder are fun to listen to-they are such consumate pros. Clapton's playing is tasty and the Donnie McClurkin vocal on A Healing Coming On is just really nice. That's the problem-it's a really nice cd, when The Crusaders at their best are transcendent.

I recomend buying this one, or at a minimum downloading Rural Renewal, Creepin' Heartland, Healing, Sing the Song, Shotgun House Groove and Greasy Spoon.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting Mix.......2005-05-29

This reunion CD comes on the heels of several other "Jazz Crusaders" reunions that included Wayne Henderson; so while it might be hard for fans to get a handle on "Will the real band please stand up?", "Rural Renewal" is an excellent set on its own terms. David Ritz who wrote the lyrics to Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" does the liner notes that detail the course of jazz from the 60s to the present & how the Crusaders/Jazz Crusaders fit within that era. Joe Sample wrote most of the songs and does a great job such as on the loose "Shotgun House Groove" that producer Stewart Levine allows the band members to improvise over the central riff with great result. On "The Territory," Wilton Felder's tenor sax settles into the groove and explodes into a delightful ride. Drummer Stix Howse penned "Greasy Spoon" that sets a funky beat with Sample's keyboards & Felder's sax in a luxurious duel. "Lazy Sundays" is breezy & laid back. Perhaps the most memorable tracks open the set with Eric Clapton guesting on both the energetic title track & the blues jam "Creepin'." A quote from Donnie McClurkin on the Oprah Winfrey show just after 9/11 lead to the lyric composition between Sample & Will Jennings on "A Healing Coming On." The Sounds of Blackness guest on the track, giving a moving gospel feel. "Rural Renewal" is an excellent set that marries jazz, blues & soul into an enchanting mix. Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars I put three cuts on my iPod, whatever that means..........2005-04-29

I'm picky with what I put on my iPod, even if it has 20Gigs... My favorites were Creepin', Heartland and The Territory, and the rest of the CD is pretty good too.

My all-time favorite Crusaders pieces are "A Message from the Inner City," and "A Search for Soul." Both are from the most underrated album of all time, "The 2nd Crusade," reach all the way back to 1972 for this gem. Some of their stuff has an unjust reputation for being Jazz Lite, but the two above are the real deal...

Anyway, the Rural Renewal stuff has echoes of the above, which is cool. Thanks Crusaders, this is definitely worth the price of admission, from a dedicated fan.

5 out of 5 stars Great Idea - Great Result!.......2006-09-07

*Review from Germany.*
At first I have to say: Most of the review written by my boyfriend, Carsten G. (gary_lapread22(at)yahoo.de), and a bit by myself (we take the one person form to write).
- My English ain't very good, but I hope you can understand it. -

I don't know what's the problem of some reviewer here. It's a really great album - a serious tribute to Phil Collins - covered by different artists. The songs come up to a new fresh style - produced by a few American and one German producer(s) - and sound so clear as they were almost made under observation of Phil Collins himself.
I've also read about that he would love these songs very much although they have different music-styles (mix of Hip-Hop & R'n'B) and are not typical for Phil Collins works.
I just can say this: It thrills every minute you hear it and it's never boring to listen to.

So I must give clear 5 stars! My favourites are: *In The Air Tonight* / Lil' Kim feat. Phil Collins, *I Don't Care Anymore* / Kelis, *Sussudio* / Ol' Dirty Bastards, *Something Happened On The Way To Heaven* / Deborah Cox ... and the whole rest of it.

That's what I have to tell!

Kind regards

5 out of 5 stars A great album, not a tribute album.......2003-11-24

The idiot who wrote the stuff about why some of the lyrics were changed is pretty stupid. This isn't the typical tribute album. I mean if they were going to sing the songs exactly the way they were written then why bother resinging them. These artists wanted to create a new sound with the songs of Phil Collins. Can you get that through your thick skull. And the artists have succeeded in making these songs their own. Its kind of dumb to ask them to sing it the same way as phil anyways cuz they cant, they're not phil collins to begin with.

3 out of 5 stars wow.......2003-08-19

the only good song on here is Deborah Cox version of something happened on the way to heaven and or course her voice is awesome like allways but if you like that song look for the dance remix its even better

3 out of 5 stars Stick with the original..........2003-07-12

This album is okay but a lot of the songs don't really add anything new to the original. I don't mind tribute albums if they try to expand on original ideas and not just say "let's just R&B-ize the songs". When I listen to this album, I usually just end up wanting to play the Phil Collins albums instead.

Also, just out of curious, why does TQ change the lyrics in All of My Life to "Said Enough" instead of "Set 'em up"? Do these people not have the original lyrics? Well, I guess I did say I didn't like it when people were just derivative... ;)

4 out of 5 stars Kickin Tracks.......2003-03-30

You would not believe how awsome Debrah Cox pulls off "Something happened on the way to heaven". This is by far the best track on the album.

Album Description

Ever since his days as the guitarist for Genesis, Steve Hackett has been setting new standards for his instrument. Matchless versatility combined with extraordinary passion has transformed him through time into a musician's musician. In addition to his work in progressive rock, Steve Hackett has also shown remarkable dedication in the pursuit of his classical side. To date he has released 5 acoustic/classical albums, and has appeared as the featured soloist with the London Chamber Orchestra, earning the respect of both rock contemporaries and classical figures alike.

Metamorpheus, the latest project, is the natural successor to 1997's A Midsummer Night's Dream (which spent several weeks in the UK classical charts). It combines nylon strung guitar with orchestra, seamlessly merging small and large musical forces.

5 out of 5 stars Best of his acoustic albums.......2005-08-09

Hackett hops back and forth between the classical music and progressive rock worlds, and has had hit and misses in both. Happily, this is one of his most diverse and atmospheric classical accomplishments. Even fans who prefer his progressive work might find this a satisfying listen, since it occasionally echoes some of his Genesis era pastoral guitar interludes. Even though I greatly enjoyed "A Midsummer Night's Dream" this new CD seems more cohesive and satisfying overall. It's a lovely creation.

2 out of 5 stars retrocedamos 150 años.......2005-05-05

4 out of 5 stars Superb concept well executed.......2005-05-03

Dealing with the mythology was always a formidable strongpoint for Steve Hackett. That he is one of the finest nylon string guitar players in the world only enhances the wonder, the lyricism and the sophistication of his tales. He is not a singer by any means, but it's his hands that tell the story. "Blood On The Rooftops" from the Genesis days is just one of the many extraordinary examples of the sophistication he brought to rock, invoking the legend of Passover into the backdrop of American TV violence and the Israeli-Palestinian cross-fire.
On this latest disc, moving away from social commentary, Shakespeare and back into Greek mythology, Hackett along with his cadres have created a classical masterpiece. The integration of the instruments is subtle. The pacing of the tale is dead-on. His fingerpicking and plectrum work set him apart from both classical and rock contemporaries. I can think of only Steve Howe, with whom he shared an entirely unsuccessful collaboration that played to none of their strengths (GTR), and Sharon Isbin, I can think of no other contemporary guitarist with that capacity for storytelling as well as finesse. Hackett must surely channel John Dowland, both thematically and stylistically. It is a chamber work on offer here, more baroque than classical, but it is one of the ways in which ancient myth informs us of the perils of our particular age.
This is a significant addition to the canon of guitar music.

4 out of 5 stars More guitar, please.......2005-04-18

I enjoy most all of Hackett's music, especially his acoustic albums. My only disappointment is that the guitar is not featured even more. No doubt this composition reflects his vision and all, but I was left wanting more of his nylon-string virtuosity. I found his 1997 "Midsummer Night's Dream" a little more satisfying in this regard.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully melodic combo of classical guitar with orchestra.......2005-04-16

Lush and romantic setting with just the right amount of edge for the story of Orpheus's voyage to the underworld. Upon a few listens I found many of the melodies were very memorable. Nice original music that nods occasionally to Ravel and Morricone yet quite original. The guitar playing is super as are the orchestral players. Very well engineered too. Found this a more balanced effort than Hackett's Midsummer's CD that also featured a guitar and orchestra setting.

4 out of 5 stars good experiment and change.......2007-03-24

This album was in my stash as soon it came out and was surprised when heard it first. It was quite different from previous releases and thought maybe got a bootleg or false copy. Or Mille left the band. It did not sound like Kreator at all. But later realized Kreator had tried a new direction. I listened this album alot until the cassette was chewed up by my stereo. Bugger!
Since teenage years I listened to Kreator, Sodom and Tankard.

3 out of 5 stars An experiment.......2006-04-11

I think the reviews on this are a bit too high, but I'm glad it didn't get slammed like I thought it would. This album was an experiment for Kreator, incorporating industrial sounds and lackluster production that caught all the fans off guard, including myself. What really hurt this album was that it followed Extreme Aggression & Coma Of Souls, arguably 2 of the finest thrash albums ever recorded, not to mention all their earlier work, but these 2 albums in particular found Kreator with a tight sound with very meaty guitars and great production. Renewal is lacking in all these departments EXCEPT the songwriting. To prove my point, listen to the Renewal tracks on Scenarios of Violence or any live recording...they rip! What can become bland to listeners on Renewal sounds completely different elsewhere. I liked this album from the beginning despite the total 180 degree turn they took. Kreator has given us fans so much great music and it's nice to know that even their worst album is still much better than a lot of other stuff out there. I personally would like to thank them for making my neck sore on many occasions!

2 out of 5 stars Who is this ?.......2006-01-19

First, let me say that I am a very big Kreator fan. I do not like this album. I honestly can not stand listening to this album. The production is weak and thin and it really does not sound anything like any of the previous Kreator albums. I understand that bands might want to change and experiment, but I just cant get into this.

5 out of 5 stars Different, but still the best of Kreator.......2005-09-01

What distinguish this album from the former and the latter Kreator albums are that:
1. Slow(er).
2. Have synth effects
3. Downtuned vocals
4. Downtuned guitars

So is it a bad album? No way. This is one of the best (for me it IS) Kreator albums ever. Political lyrics, aggressive sound, riffs & riffs... Euro-thrash in its purest form...

4 out of 5 stars Violent Revolution.......2005-08-06

The Thrash scene changed irreversibly in the early 1990s, with the rise of Death Metal in the underground grabbing all the attention and leading the way in innovation. There were also the first faint stirrings of the spectre of Black Metal too. There was no blindingly obvious way forward, so bands tried a number of approaches to the changing tide. Metallica and Megadeth slowed down and aimed at commercial acceptance. Anthrax and Flotsam and Jetsam shed members and went Rock. Slayer and Overkill didn't seem to notice, and just ploughed on regardless. Celtic Frost gave up. Kreator looked outside Metal for inspiration, and came up with a formula for reinvention, even if it wasn't well received at first.

`Renewal' saw Kreator slow down somewhat but their sound was powered up by incorporating Industrial and Hardcore into the mix. The result was a crushing album, but it threw off a lot of traditional Thrash fans because it simply wasn't a traditional Thrash album.

Most obvious was the change in Mille Petrozza's vocal delivery. Gone were his razor sharp screeches, replaced instead by a throaty Hardcore style shout. Also gone were the breakneck rhythm guitar riffs Kreator were infamous for, traded for a more measured, gutsier sound. Drummer extraordinaire Ventor also had a bit of a rest. The frantic double bass driven physical workouts he'd been peddling for the best part of a decade had metamorphosed into straightforward but precise and mechanical rhythms, topped with electronic flourishes.

There is no way the band would have released songs as adventurous as the plaintive "Karmic Wheel" during the restrictive musical climate of the 1980s. A study in dynamics and structure, the song starts with a despondent, gloomy vocals and an understated riff. It leads to an extended atmospheric, almost trippy passage, where tortured souls emerge from a vortex before returning to the main riff, which disappears leaving only the bass and drums to carry the song.

The experimentation and innovation is apprent all through the album. The short "Realitatskontrolle" takes the Industrial influences to their experimental extreme, with no guitar, a distorted bassline and an effects laden vocal loop. The intro to "Europe After The Rain" is straight from the Discharge school of hateful discordant Hardcore. However, it doesn't stay quite so straightforward. The song also features Ventor's famous double kick fury, bass-led breakdown passages, and a frantic speedfreak solo. Despite being so twisted, it is still the closest song on the album to the traditional Thrash sound.

Kreator's previous album `Coma Of Souls' was the zenith of the sound the band pioneered in 1984 with `Endless Pain'. There was no way forward from there without treading water or going over old ground. Unfortunately, a lot of fans could not see the creative well had run dry for the band, and labelled `Renewal' a sell out. `Renewal' is a reinvention, not a sell out. It requires some effort on the part of the listener to try to grasp what the band was trying to do and those who make the effort will be justifiably rewarded.
