Few artists last long in the rarefied terrain occupied by singer Lisa Gerrard over the last quarter-century. She shares a passion with composers like Arvo Pärt in the unrelenting pursuit of the divine. In fact, Gerrard evokes Pärt a few times on The Silver Tree, her first non-collaborative solo release since The Mirror Pool in 1995. The Silver Tree is an album of ancient echoes, ghostly refrains, and hymns to the heavens. On "Abwoon," she intones the Lord's Prayer in Aramaic, orchestrating her own voice in choral harmonies that unfold beneath her like winds on waves. But "Spaceweaver" sends chills through the soul as Gerrard unlocks this peculiar nasal, back-of-the-throat snarl that she only adopts on such tracks, with a menacing blues groove that recalls "Meltdown" from her score to The Insider. You can hear much of Gerrard's soundtrack work mirrored here: "The Sea Whisperer" picks up at the spirit-affirming end of "Now We Are Free" from Gladiator. And I suspect that the 10-minute opus "Towards the Tower" might be her rejected overture for the film Constantine. With Ligeti-like voices, suspended glissando strings, and ominous percussion shifts, it certainly would work in the cinematic context of a supernatural thriller. The album has been available for half a year in Australia (worldwide via digital download), so as a bonus, the American release tacks on a bonus track, "Entry." Its thudding electronic drum loop and sketchy vocal makes for a disruptive exit. But until you get there, The Silver Tree is an embracing experience. Whether singing Aramaic, English, or that language of her imagination, Lisa Gerrard makes the most heavenly music heard on earth--and maybe beyond. --John Diliberto

Middle of the road wedding music.......2007-01-20
I bought this cd because I had everything in my wedding planned to the last tiny detail except the ceremony music. All the songs on the cd are nice traditional wedding songs. I did not use any of the music from the cd, but I am glad I bought it because it helped me realize that traditional wedding music was not what I wanted. All and all a nice classical music cd but not for brides who really want a personal ceremony. BTW I went with Enya and Lorena McKennitt.
just what I was looking for.......2007-01-10
We wanted traditional wedding music and found it in this CD. I'm no music expert, but the arrangements and performances seemed fine. I would definitely recommend this CD for any bride looking for a concise collection of traditional wedding pieces.
Most Chosen Selections.......2006-03-13
As a wedding officiant, my wife and I are often asked to assist the couple with other services for their ceremony, such as music. For this, we have a very large selection in our music library to choose from. We have put together a catalog of cd's that we loan out to the couple for their review, and most often, their selections come from BRIDE'S GUIDE TO WEDDING MUSIC.
If you're planning a traditional or formal wedding on a budget, this cd has it all. There are even two selections of Wagner's "Wedding March" to choose from. Only two of the selections have vocals, the rest are all extraordinary instrumental selections.
Often, even around the house or in my car, I find myself listening to this cd. The music is soothing, refreshing, uplifting and most enjoyable. I recommend this cd over all other wedding music cd's.
Another Great Reference CD.......2006-01-09
This is a great compilation, CD, along with Bride's Guide to Wedding Music Volume 2, to use as a reference for some of the more popular wedding songs; just about everything on here is standard fare for weddings. All of the musicians are generally superb, and the sound quality is very good. However, this is most useful if you are playing the CD at your wedding, or using it as a reference CD to talk over potential music selections with an organist, a string quartet, etc. Like my review for Volume 2, I only gave it four stars based on practicality, not on quality. If it were just quality, I would give it five stars. I purchased this CD since I am in the process of making my own wedding CD (I am a professional, freelance violinist), and this was nice to listen to, even just as background music for dinner. BTW: beware of reviewers who don't use their names, especially "A music fan." This is most likely the producer of the "Wedding Traditions" CD and he slanders other CDs so his will look better. You'd think that in the wedding music business people would have better ethics, but unfortunately, that's not always the case. The best advice I can give, as a classical musician myself, if to take time to listen to the sound clips, and if possible, try to find them on iTunes where they might sound higher quality. This is the only real way of knowing whether the CD is right for you.
A Nice CD.......2005-12-30
This is a very nice CD.
Our daughter used some of the songs on this CD
and some of the songs that are on the
"Classical Wedding Traditions" CD for the wedding.
She also used many of the songs on the
"New Wedding Traditions Volume I" CD

Mysteria - draws me into the temple of tempation.......2007-02-27
thanks amazon, for recommendations and listen to samples, or I would never
have found and bought MYSTERIA. I enjoy Delerium & Enigma, and now Mysteria.
The Chants and Angelic Voices are very "moody". I espeically
get "tempted" by track #8. ALSO recommend - BLUE STONE.
Great Album.......2007-02-17
I just want to point out to the reviewer James Liakos "James L" about how this album is a rip off of Phobos; this is the same artist who created Phobos; Mark Adams Allison is his name. He also has an album called Of Earth & Sky but goes by the name Spirit Level which is the same style of music.
Another Offspring.......2007-02-15
For those of you who know what it's all about, this cd is actually good, even though there are "samples" from other musicians work, the music on this release is amusing.
Having been a Delerium fan since 1989, I have enjoyed the opportunity in listening to other musicians grow from Deleriums lead.
Once Enigma came along it has pretty much been this way. Even Delerium switched it up a bit when Enigma hit the circuit.
If you are debating on purchasing 'Mysteria', I say buy it, it is worth it and it will grow on you.
Could have been better without the copying off other artists.......2007-02-15
I agree with another reviewer here.
There are several good songs on this album for those into the more new agey, ethereal type (meditative, relaxing, floating) music.
Unfortunately it's surprisingly disappointing and suspect as to why this artist ripped off Phobos and especially world-wide known Moby (and Enigma?) on several songs here. I own Phobos, Moby, and Enigma (several Moby and Enigma albums) and was surprised and unhappy to hear songs so close to copying effect to great, original ones I already have. There's something unattractive and annoying in hearing an artist do good music and then a song comes on which clearly reminds you of Enigma, Moby, or Phobos to the point where an actual leading melody or sound has been taken, sometimes cut up but too taken overall from the original hit source. Several tracks on this otherwise pretty good album sound like blatant rip-offs and whether that was the artists attempt here or not is beyond me but it doesn't look good. I don't care if he is friends with these guys. Be original. Focus on new ideas. For for heavens sake, create your own work!!
For teaching Yoga class this album has some very floating songs on it, but I'm afraid the students who are generally more aware of new age artists and music like myself will instantly recognize the several unoriginal songs. Either way, it isn't worth chancing in my opinion.
This artist got too inspired maybe but the overall effect is good mixed with disappointing. It's better to be and stay as far away from sounding similar to others even if you're inspired. As an artist you develop more praise and smiles that way. People spead your name around more if they're pleased and impressed with your work. I feel mixed with this album overall but there is some fresh, good work on it for those into New Age.
For those into this type of music and want some of the best , check out:
Phobos - Phobos ... (Great New Age albums)
Amethystium ... (several albums by this artist, they're all very good)
Nicola Hitchcock - Passive Aggressive ... (I just heard this the other day, very relaxing, beautiful female vioce, new agey)
An enchanting ethereal experience.......2006-12-11
I heard this CD for the first time at a listening station at Borders and immediately picked it up. Tempting the Muse is a beautiful CD, reminding me of early Enigma - still one of my favorite albums - and Delerium from the Karma/Poems era. Unlike the more recent Enigma productions Mysteria keeps to the smooth mix of Gregorian chants, sexy female vocals, and deep grooves. Check out especially track 9, Awake Inside A Dream. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who loved the first and second Enigma records.

Featuring an incredible line-up of world/lounge luminaries including Althea W., Ginkgo Garden, Joe Weinek Opera-to-Relax, Peter Mergener, Artemisia, TAU, David & Steve Gordon and many more genre-bending mixologists. De-stress and unwind, as deep ancient wisdom meets with these mesmerizing modern beats to create the definitive nu-global soundtrack for today; perfectly suited for deepening your yoga experience, as the perfect backdrop for socializing or any time you just want to chill-out.
"If you need a compilation to hold you over until the next installment in Sequoia's "Buddha-Lounge" series gets released, HOTEL TARA is the perfect place to take up residence. Like that series, the album features a luscious non-stop mix of ethnic-flavored grooves, spiritual essence and intoxicating beats compiled and mixed by the Gordon brothers. HOTEL TARA ups the "dreamy" quotient, creating an atmosphere that is at once peaceful and soulful. The beats are low-tempo and many of the songs have a touch of Indian instrumentation as well as a subtle retro-lounge flair. Artists include David and Steve Gordon, Gingko Garden, Althea W., Jaya Lakshmi, Artemisia and others. This is a great album for anyone looking for music that is mellow and cerebral - it is perfect for chilling out to."

Unwind with this..........2007-03-26
Smooth, sensous, soothing, and sultry. A couple of cuts a little on the "loungy" side but overall this is an excellent CD that delivers exactly what you would expect from the title. The quality of this stuff is definitely a cut above a lot of the other budda-lounge wannabes.
A maverick New Age/Eastern hybrid classic!.......2005-03-25
I am absolutely taken into the beauty and harmony that is the album "Hotel Tara". I first heard this at an independent CD store recently and after finding out who it was, I instantly bought the new album and I am proud of my choice of buying it. This album reminds me very strongly of the Earthtone collection series from years ago. After the apparent and unfortunate demise of the Earthtone label, Sequoia Records seems to have taken the torch and "Hotel Tara" is a powerful CD. "Apollo 13" is a highly eclectic track that incorporates voice effects of a NASA space mission with a gorgeous jazz/New Age groove. "Govinda Hari" is an electrifying song with haunting Eastern Indian voices and a very entrancing melody. This is such a wonderful CD and I highly recommend this.
Blissful Eastern Chill.......2005-03-10
Nothing less than superb ! This new titles from Sequoia Groove is a blissful voyage into the very best of Eastern influenced downtempo chill-out music. A provacative follow up to Sequoia's Buddha Lounge series. This album really transports the listener into some very exoctic and sensuous musical landscapes. I especially love the Jaya Lakshmi track "Govinda Hari" and "Apollo 13" by Joe Werineck which incorporates actual original recordings from the space mission into a lushly textured background of slow and sultry electonica. This is a great addition to any downtempo musical collection. If you like, Buddha Bar or Hotel De Costa you will love Hotel Tara.
The Ultimate Music for Sacred Lovers.......2005-02-10
David & Steve Gordon have done it again ! Just when you thought it could'nt get any better, these musical visionaries deepen the mix even further. Hotel Tara bills itself as "The Intimate Side of Buddha Lounge" and it certainly delivers on that promise. This is an exotic and enticing blend of traditional Eastern music with the very best that Western downtempo-electronica has to offer, featuring an superlative assortment of the very best Sequoia artists and some absolutely alluring new artists. Likely the most noteable being the lead track "L'Heure Verte/The Green Hour"from Artemisia, the new Steve Gordon solo project with it's distinctive tabla beat, exquisite tamboura, sensuous guitar and luminous vocals provided by Jaya Lakshmi whose "Govinda Hari" also graces the album. David Gordon's new solo track "Floating" is also fantastic, melding chill-out and smooth jazz effortlessly into this delightfully transcendent tune. My wife and I have now found our new favorite CD for our intimate encounters and Tantra sessions. These Sequoia Groove titles just keep getting better and better and this one is perfect suited for the the Sacred Lover. Keep them coming. Absolutely delightful.

Nirvana Cafe Review.......2007-01-31
Excellent music...a superb compliment to Zen Breakfast. I play both pieces repeatedly throughout the day while at work...relaxing without being intrusive on my work.
This is MUSIC.......2006-03-30
Like the person who wrote the last review, this is real music. The first Karunesh album i bought was Global Spirit. I was down in Orlando, Florida at a crystal shop, of all places, and heard "Solitude" playing. I cannot describe how wonderful I felt listening to it. However, I can say that it helped me get out of my depression. And to this day "Solitude" is still my favorite song. This song nor any of the others I have heard from Karunesh have ever become boring nor do they get "stuck in your head" like many annoying music I hear on the radio.
I really wish Karunesh could read this. If he can, I love his music because it is so filled with love and compassion and passion. the former Passion and life that was so clear in "Global Spirit" seemed a little bit lost or umimplemented in "Zen Breakfast" Perhaps because he was going to another stage of life and self discovery. However, it is once back again in "Nirvana Cafe." I must confess, though, that I have only heard these three albums from Karunesh.
Karunesh, Please keep up the great work. You have helped me and many others, I believe.
Karunesh--Back to his old Self !!.......2003-02-09
The first time I heard this album I thought now thats more like it!! This took me back to his first album. Songs that move and change and when they do that, you find yourself humming along. This music is why I buy New age in the first place.....because it is MUSIC!! This album has taken me along way since I first heard Karunesh 6 years ago when his song Dawnlight was played on my local cable systems DMX digital music. I knew then I would like his music very much. This album gets 5 stars and deserves them. This album has replaced Colors of Light as my favorite Karunesh album. VERY highly suggest fan get this one today!! Now I could tell you something about each song as other seem to do, but my music tastes are just that....MINE. You may not like the same music I do, but I will say this, when I write a review on this site it is because this is just to good not to tell people about. Enjoy it for yourself.
from Solo Piano Publications.......2002-10-26
"Nirvana Cafe" is Karunesh's second release for the Real Music label. More adventurous than the earlier "Zen Breakfast," I really like the variety of sounds and moods on this album. Although intensely spiritual in nature, "Nirvana Cafe" conveys more of a zest for life than many recordings of this type. Some of the tracks are quiet meditations, but others bring in strong bass and percussion, just begging to have the volume cranked up a few notches! Govi contributes outstanding guitar work on four tracks, and the rest of the varied sounds are multi-instrumentalist Karunesh working his musical wizardry. I love "Revelry", a rhythmic confection with pan flutes playing a simple but compelling melody. Other instruments are introduced as the song goes on. I hit the "replay" button on my CD player for this one all the time. "Keeper of Mystery" is more ambient, but also has a strong rhythm. It is dream-like but also catchy. "Chuang Tzu's Dream" tells the story of the Taoist sage's dream that he was a butterfly. Upon waking, he couldn't tell if he was a man dreaming he was a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming he was himself. Very beautiful, soothing, and intriguing with Asian influences and lovely flute work. "Sapphire" is another beauty with lots of open space to float around in. Actually, all of the tracks are really good - those mentioned are favorites, but there really are no weak spots. Very highly recommended!
A familiar - and pleasing - sound.......2002-10-22
The first thing that came to mind when I was listening to this music is that it sounds an awful lot like recent Mike Oldfield - which is just great, because I loved Tres Lunas and The Songs of Distant Earth. If you did, too, then you'll probably like Nirvana Cafe.

The Mystical Adventures Of Jean Luc Ponty.......2007-04-22
What seperates Jean Luc Ponty from a number of other jazz violinists I can name is that from King Kong: Jean Luc Ponty Plays The Music Of Frank Zappa on is that Ponty is not a self indulgent, pretentious musician. But he is extremely passionate. And that is what you'll hear, sometimes to excess on this album;Jean Luc streches out not only his own instrument but his electric keyboard playing throughout the five part title suite (if that sounds intimidating,it's seperated out into five different tracks that flow together). And Ponty,as he would perfect on the next two albums coming uses the keyboards and synthesizers very much like his violin and violectra.'Mystical Adventures' isn't a whole lot like the more concise funk and rock influenced compositions found on Civilized Evil;the music here is divided into suites such as the mini suite of "Final Truth" and "Rhythms Of Hope" which really allows bassist Randy Jackson (YES the 'American Idol' judge) to stretch out his vamping into whatever musical adventure Ponty takes him on.The Tolkien odyssey type scene painted by Ponty's wife Claudia on the front actually brings to the mind the music you'll be hearing.Ponty of course even allows himself one cover,in this case Stevie Wonder's "As".Now he starts off taking a keyboard solo then pretty much plays the melody rote-by the time the vocorder drops by you realize how in keeping it is with Stevie's ideas and it doesn't date the song at all.Towards the end Ponty goes into more of a solo outside the melody. This album ends with "Jig",a really fun song that I can...well only describe as a jazz fusion/country...hoedown.'Mystical Adventures' is definately recommended to any fan of of Ponty or progressive fusion in general.
Progressive fusion at its best.......2006-11-15
This is one of the definitive progressive rock-fusion hybrid albums, and probably the last of its kind. Be warned though: this is definitely leaning more towards progressive rock than jazz, with lengthy multi-part compositions, varying, complex meters, shifting almospheres and electronic instrumentation. This album will appeal more to the fans of Genesis, Yes, ELP, Caravan and Soft Machine than those of traditional jazz. However, there is some variety on the CD to keep things from being one-directional - there is even a Police-soundalike tune and a rather pointless if not unpleasant Stevie Wonder cover. But not to worry, there is plenty of muscular, chops-busting workouts to please the most demanding prog-head or fusion afficionado like myself.
Randy Jackson's best bass work!.......2005-02-28
If you don't already know, the bassist on this album is Randy Jackson the American Idol judge. since he is an incredible bassist he picked up right where Ralphe Armstrong (Ponty's former bassist) left off and didn't miss a note. Incredible bass work on Rhythm Of Hope and Final Truth. As far as compisitions and musicianship this is one of Ponty's greatest efforts. This is my personal favorite Ponty album also. This album won best Jazz album Grammy in 1983.
Very Good Record........2002-08-31
This is the final record Jean-Luc Ponty made with suites, and he goes out with a bang, putting 2 on this one. The first suite, Mystical Adventures, sounds like the title. Mystical. I love it. And each part smoothly goes into the next. It's a very mysterious piece, almost like the album cover. I imagine a forest with fog. And then the 2nd is Final Truth, a short but sweet melody. He also covers Stevie Wonder's "As" on this record, and does a good job. Overall, an excellent album.

It's been seven years since Minnesota-born guitarist Steve Tibbetts and Chöying Drolma, a sweet-faced, crop-haired Tibetan nun, released their first collaboration, Chö. On this sophomore effort, the two have created another series of placid sonic journeys, wherein Drolma's nasal yet pristine alto-to-mezzo soars amid a restrained blend of guitar, electronica, drones, and overdubbed voices, augmented by Marc Anderson's hand-drums and occasional hints of whispery chimes touched by nothing human. Chöying Drolma is a proponent of Vajrayana Buddhism, in which obstacles to enlightenment are proactively cut free via intense forms of meditation that can take place in graveyards and other provocative locations. No passive convent recluse, she has founded a school for nuns and continues to reach out to the world via the beauty her voice, while remaining aloof from its frenzy. The album leaves a strangely energetic peacefulness in its wake; a profound relaxation that also encourages action toward betterment. --Christina Roden
Album Description
Over the past few years, the music of Tibetan monks has gained a massive audience, with Western listeners finding refuge from the rat race in the songs and chants of the East. Those same medicinal qualities are at the core of this breathtaking collaboration between veteran guitar wizard and ECM recording artist Steve Tibbetts and Choying Drolma, a Buddhist nun whom Tibbetts met and recorded at a monastery in Nepal.
The highly anticipated follow-up to their acclaimed first release, 1997's Cho, Selwa is a beautiful sound tapestry of haunting songs that evoke a sense of peace that cuts through any language barrier. Tibbetts has one of the most recognizable guitar styles in the world and his subtle arrangements mixed with percussion from his long time collaborator Marc Anderson perfectly frame Drolma's unforgettable voice.
Customer Reviews:
Choyng Drolma.......2007-01-15
I am very impressed by this woman, she has worked so hard to provide a school for nuns, so that they can have the same opportunities as the monks. Also, she energized the town where the new school is, and got a good water supply for the whole community. Plus, she has organized a retirement plan for the nuns. All this and the beautiful music as well.
More like Celtic New Age than Cho.......2005-02-22
I'm a big fan of Steve Tibbetts. I own all of his cd's, which is a rare thing for me, but I find his music has a lasting quality -- I can almost always put on Big Map Idea or Cho and I'm immediately happier and more productive and more peaceful. If I feel like some emotional, wild guitar, I find Exploded View never fails to center me. Selwa is the first cd of his I've ever been really disappointed in. There is no question that something about Selwa, possibly its production values alone, or perhaps ill considered percussion, make it sound decidedly like new age Celtic music. I find it quite different from Cho in this regard. For example, frequently the guitar and singing are not complementary here. Try track 6: a fast chant line (almost chipmunkish) is accompanied by an almost too typical Tibbetts soft meandering, and it might even work, but for some reason the fast chant is accompanied by an overproduced clacking percussion, which is nothing if not grating. The album gets stronger and more Cho like at the end, which is welcome if you can get that far. Tracks 9 and 10 are very beautiful, as good as anything on Cho, and not surprisingly they lack the added percussion. It's a shame that the whole album couldn't be at that level.
If you like New Age music in general (I don't -- I'm more of a Frisell, Eno, and Tibbetts guy, than a New Age and Tibbetts guy), and some of the Celtic singing New Age stuff (which often finds its way into climactic Hollywood movie scenes), then I think you really will enjoy this album. If you're more of a guitar or art-music or jazz appreciator, I think you'll find this album grating until track 9, even if you found Cho transcendent, as I did.
Tibetan Heaven.......2004-09-14
Steve Tibbetts has always found a unique way to create music that transcends itself into different cultural and spiritual environments. Steve has the incredible ability to record the natural sounds of Indonesian beats, Tibetan chants, or traditional West African sounds creating strikingly original albums with vast contributions from his long time band members. Steve's natural instruments of choice on many of his albums have been Kalimba, Mandalin, Guitar, Bouzouki, Voice, Pianolin, etc. While Steve's ECM albums have been focused on a more or less robust musical point of view, fusing a profound classic rock sound or American folk with heavy Eastern and African influences, he has marked his territory well in the "World Music" category with Rykodisc related projects such as "A","Cho", and now "Selwa". Steve has worked well with traditional sounds of the Norwegian fiddler(Knut Hamre) to the traditional chants of Choying Drolma. The common ground is Steve's sensuality and high respect for other peoples musical cultures.
While the successful album, "Cho", is a beautiful collaboration of Steve's westernized sounds and the Tibetan chants of the young Choying Drolma and her sister nuns, "Selwa" is more. Steve and Marc are less shy here and they contribute more of their trademark sound without distorting the natural spiritual quality of Tibetan music. There is something more musically spontaneous on "Selwa". "Selwa" represents some of Buddhists practices that support the notion of "spontaneous expression" and luminosity that also spawns creative music and thought that is unlike any other. This is a beautiful album full of ambient sounds, guitar, and percussion, and Choyings' haunting chants. "Selwa" is very musical, spiritual, peaceful and a pleasure to listen to. I feel that "Selwa" overall is stronger than its predecessor.
I highly recommend "Selwa".
The Contemporary Sound of Ancient Chanting.......2004-09-12
"Selwa" is the second stunning collaboration between Steve Tibbets and Choyin Drolma, and the long wait many of us endured -their first CD came out in 1997- has certainly been justified.
To many of you, Tibbets may be far from a new name. Along with Marc Ribot and Bill Frisell, he belongs to a generation of virtuoso guitar players who have expanded their Jazz roots by incorporating a number of genres, to create distinct and impressive personal styles. Where Ribot explored Cuban music and improvisation, and Frisell -well, Frisell has explored almost everything successfully- Mr. Tibbets concentrated on studying Eastern forms and mining certain possibilities of Electronica into a very singular identity.
His ECM catalog -where he's recorded most of his solo work- shows the depth of his playing and compositional prowess, a musical vision that fits perfectly this Tibetan sacred music
Choyin Drolma, unlike Tibbets, is not primarily a musician in the traditional sense of the word. Since she was very young, she has been a Tibetan-Buddhist nun pursuing chanting as a form of spiritual practice.
This album, very much as their first collaboration, sees Tibbets providing traditional chants sung by Drolma, with a subtle and evocative palette of sounds where guitars, loops and percussion -played here by his longtime collaborator Marc Anderson- add haunting and meaningful sound layers to Drolma's voice.
The results are stunning, whether you have ever been interested in Eastern religions, contemplative music or meditation, you may find playing this album on "repeat" and being infused by its calm wisdom.
Yet, for those people who are not familiar with anything I mentioned as their interests, this album -it has been my personal experience-is likely to move you, to seep into your mood and flood you with images you may have not recalled in years.
Like "Cho" -their first album- the quiet intensity of this album's melodies is remarkable, fierce and peaceful at once, and always honoring of its ancient melodies. Unlike the former, "Selwa" finds Tibbets expanding his musical contribution although never imposing himself on the sacred nature of the chants.
All in all, "Selwa" is as moving and likely to transport you to some essential region of contemplation on yourself and the deep beauty of what's surrounding you right now, whether it's a tomato plant bending under the weight of ripe offerings, a dog playing with a tattered ball or the rhythms of car horns in heavy traffic. This an unusual yet fitting example of the best music that came out this year.

Defies Definition.......2007-05-19
I was given this album as a gift from a friend - when handing the disc to me he said listen to track 7...it will blow you away.
I sometimes think that speaking and understanding Aramaic is th new "cool thing". Aramaic was my first language, taught to me by me grandmother who did not speak English very well. I have never forgotten "the language of the Lord, as some people choose to call it". Track 7, beginning with the two words Babun Bishmyah, in Aramaic...Our Father in Heaven. She is singing the Lords' Prayer, in the langguage that Christ spoke, in Aramaic.
Pretty amazing me thinks....and without the "hype" of Mel Gibsons' movie, The Passion. Mel Gibson being one of the greatest bigots on the planet, by the way - he hates gays, Jews, black people...in my opinion a travesty for him to make a movie spoken in the language of the Lord - "leshana aitekka" in Aramaic; the literal translation being "the old language".
Bottom line, in my humble opinion, Lisa Gerrard is an Angel....expressed in the way she sings, her voice....expressed in her choice of material......
Randolph, from San Francisco.
Beautiful but safe...........2007-05-16
I have long been a fan of Lisa Gerrard and DCD and I usually cherish every new release. Yet "the Silver Tree" seems to reminiscent of her latest collaborations with artists such as Patrick Cassidy and her movie scores. I long for something less cinematic and more eclectic as "The Mirror Pool" Gerrad's latest releases sound too much like epic movie scores..which is nice but has gotten a bit superannuated. That is not saying that this is not another grand effort with the trademark sweeping and beautiful symbiosis of voice and instruments. Perhaps her next solo effort will take a more creative direction.
Best CD in the last 3 years.......2007-04-03
At first I balked at the price ($36!!?!). I didn't want another DCD CD, but the other reviews pushed me to try it out. Trust me, the $36 is worth it just for the first and the last tracks. I'm trying to think when was the last time I was blown away like this: probably the first time I heard Enya's "Watermark" on B&W 801 speakers. The music is dark and moody. It does have a "soundtrack" production quality and structure (not that there is anything wrong with that). Not exactly music to drive by, rather music to play late at night. If anything it has a slight North Africa/Persian tonality in the vocal but Western in the music. Can't reccommend this CD enough.
Beautiful and Meditative.......2007-03-31
I have been a Lisa Gerrard fan since her Dead Can Dance days. What I have appreciated most about her is the way she uses her voice as an instrument. Atop spare, sweeping electronic orchestration, Lisa's distinct and obviously strictly trained voice and breathing truly take on a dimension of their own. And that is where this music takes you. To another dimension. In the opening track, InExile, Lisa attains what I've never heard from her before. A dusky, sonorous timbre that will set the tone for the rest of the album. On the way home listening to this in the car c.d. player, 'cinematic' came to mind, and I see here from other reviews this is a valid label for this disc. I even checked the insert when I got home, thinking 'The Silver Tree' may have been a movie I missed.
This is not a lively c.d. It is slow and unfolding, spiraling in places. Perfect music to listen to intently as there is more to this than meets the ear at first.
Haunting.
Ecstasy once again.......2007-02-11
I am listening to this album for the first time after recieving it in the mail today. It's 2am and I can find no better soundtrack to the moment I am in. As a devoted follower of DCD and both Lisa and Brendan's solo work, I am once again blown away. Before getting the CD, I read far too many somewhat negative reviews by people stating that they prefered Lisa's older work with Dead Can Dance. Lisa is an evolving artist who never ceases to amaze me with the feats that her voice can achieve. It's the F***ng voice of heaven! I cannot fathom more angelic vocals in the world of music and no instrumental composition that is more perfectly suited for such a voice. Followers of DCD, Lisa, and Gerard will be overjoyed at the prospect of another volume of bliss to add to their collection. Twenty stars.

Fantastic performances........2005-05-02
"Maldoror" is a unique concept, producer Michael Montes put text rom Comte de Lautreamont in front of Friedlander-- the master cellist read the text and improvised what he saw. The results are nothing short of breathtaking.
If you're not familiar with Friedlander's work with John Zorn and others, you're likely in for quite a pleasant surprise-- I can think of very few musicians I have had the pleasure of hearing who possess such a stunning command of their instrument as Friedlander does. His technique is overwhelming, particularly in pizzicato, and as an improviser, he is agile and inventive. These lead to the great strength of this record, namely that Friedlander can through his technique express something much more visceral than one would expect from any musical performance.
The improvisations are largely oriented on texture and space, whether arco or pizzicato-- each note counts, as does each lack of note. Friedlander may have an overwhelming technique, but what makes both him and this recording brilliant is his ability to make decisions about when to show it and when not to. "The Wind Groans", for example, is better served by long tones and understated delivery, to meet the mood of the piece he read, then it is by any show of powerful playing.
For fans of improvised music and virtuoso performance, this album is essential. Highly recommended.
Dark, Weird & Accessible.......2004-01-12
I bought this because I saw a piece on Erik and this record in the Wire, a magazine I really trust. And though it's not the kind of thing I usually pick up, I love Maldoror. It consists of dark and atmospheric cello scraping, bowing, plucking, and pulling -- all improvised. I know, I know, it sounds like it'd be really weird and inaccessible, but there's something about Friedlander's sense of melody, his technique, and his ability to compose on the fly that makes this a record a classy little thing. It makes me think of dark moments, French films, and John Coltrane's best work. Try it. You'll like it.

Music for our Time.......2005-06-08
Ralph Vaughan Williams remains an anachronism in music: some dismiss him as a pudgy old pompous British routineer whose time is past (if it ever was); others find the depth of beauty in his music that somehow seems even more pertinent today than it was during his successful career as a composer.
Case in point is DONA NOBIS PACEM a complex work for large orchestra and chorus and soprano and baritone soloists. In 1936 when it was compiled (for it is a mixture of various movements written at different times in Vaughan Williams' life) it had an impact on the Brits as the ominous, dark cloud of War was gradually drifting over the British Isles from Germany. It is a stunning combination of passages from the mass (in title, in the use of the Agnus Dei), from scriptural selections from Jeremiah, Daniel, Psalms etc, and from the Civil War poetry of Walt Whitman.
The effect of this work is more than an oratorio (though some classify it as such). In many ways it relates to the Vaughan Williams 'Sea Symphony' in structure. The emotional effect is more related to the 'War Requiem' of Sir Benjamin Britten. The orchestral and choral writing are solidly in the British tradition and the solos superimposed on the fabric of the combined forces is eloquent and deeply moving. And at a time when the entire world cries out for peace there are few works in music than can equal the impact of this great score. Bryden Thomson conducts the London Philharmonic orchestra and choir and explores all of the intricacies of the piece while keeping a steady eye to the gradual building of the climxes. Both soprano Edith Wiens and baritone Brian Rayner Cook are exemplary soloists.
The 'Five Mystical Songs' are less impressive in impact yet they show much of Vaughn Williams penchant for finding a successful means for using the English language in a musical setting. Set to poems by George Herbert the work calls for orchestra, choir and baritone soloist and while the piece is recognizable Vaughan Williams (it was written in 1911), it surfaces memories of the old school of Horatio Parker ('Hora Novissima') and others. Nice to hear but not especially memorable, yet it would be difficult to imagine a better performance of the work than this. Buy this CD for the DONA NOBIS PACEM and let it lift your spirits! Grady Harp, June 05
Best Recording I Have Found!.......2003-10-26
This recording is one of the best I have found for the Dona Nobis Pacem. The first time I ever heard this, I was in college, where we were preparing to perform it. Even since, with the years that have past and the many additional concerts I have participated in or attended, I cannot remember a more moving experience. This work has left such a lasting impression. I recommend this to anyone who enjoy passionate choral music. The soloist are also excellent on this recording. It is so important for the dramatic Soprano entrances to be defined in the cannon with the choir. It is simply an excellent recording.
Dona.......2003-02-18
As a freshman in high school I was priviledged to perform with the CSUF University Singers and the Pacific Chorale, myself being a member of the Pacific Youth Chorale. We performed Dona Nobis Pacem and it was one of the most moving pieces ever performed. From the sadness of the Dirge for two veterans, to the uplifting ending of the final movment. This piece is one of the most beautiful out there.
Exceptionally Hard To Find.......2001-07-15
I also had the pleasure of preforming this piece at Carnegie Hall, NYC in the summer of 2000. 86 pages of what is quite possibly the most difficult choral piece ever written, performance-wise. A wonderfully complex and gripping series, "Dona Nobis Pacem" offers the choral enthusiast a challenge of the highest levels. At times simple and profound, slowly twisting into a complex cacophany that will haunt you even after the music stops. This cd is a must buy, and at this price it is a steal.
