Album Description
"The Dale Warland Singers' intonation and clarity of choral texture do nothing less than amaze." -- American Choral Catalog
"Outstanding ensemble singing, highlighted by lovely legatos and unisons and by consistently sensitive sectional and group balances." -- ClassicsToday
"The seamless blend and rich sound of what is probably America's best chorus is on display." -- Seattle Weekly
The sequel to their beloved Cathedral Classics CD. Includes Morten Lauridsen's enormously popular O Magnum Mysterium. The program is a collection of cathedral masterpieces from various countries--Germany, England, Russia, Latvia, Russia, and the US. The final Dale Warland Singers CD recording before their disbandment in 2004. Within its first month, the Dale Warland Singers' previous release on Gothic (Harvest Home) became the label's best-selling CD ever, and hit Billboard's Top 20 Classical Chart. Based in Minneapolis/St. Paul, the group was recognized as one of the world's foremost a cappella choral ensembles. This forty-voice professional choir recently celebrated its thirty-first, and final, season of concerts, tours, radio broadcasts, and critically acclaimed recordings following the retirement of founder and director Dale Warland.
Customer Reviews:
the "best" of the best group ever.......2007-06-15
This final recording of America's finest choral group ever (my apologies to Shaw and Wagner)and brings a fitting close to their impressive recording history. A follow-up to their original Catherdral Classics CD, a best seller, this CD has something for everyone. Tons of Russian work done with impeccable intonation, and spectacular performances of newer 20th and 21st century composers. Highlights most certainly are John Rutter's "Hymn to the Creator of Light" and 35 year-old Eric Whitaker's "Lux Aurumque". Both are performed with reverence and delicacy reminding the listener that this is singing from the heart by professionals at the top of their game. Bravo, Dr. Warland....

Another day, another Lightnin' Hopkins collection. It's only to be expected for a musician whose career lasted six decades, and whose recorded output was so profuse (often for several labels simultaneously) that the neophyte is hard pressed to determine which of the many albums, compilations, and box sets to acquire. One could do worse than this collection from Rhino Records, which includes classics such as "Coffee Blues" and "Mojo Hand," and even includes a few songs that aren't to be found on Mojo Hand: The Lightnin' Hopkins Anthology, generally considered the ideal collection for the beginning Hopkins aficionado. While hard-core fans probably have all these songs somewhere in their extensive collections, this CD is ideal for those seeking an introduction to the seminal bluesman. After all, he did help develop Texas blues, played a hand in developing the blues from rural to urban art form, and rode the 1960s folk-blues revival to one of the longest careers in blues history. Covering the 20 years of Hopkins's career between 1941 and 1961, the collection also provides a brief history of the development of the blues over the same period. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
The art of Lightnin' Hopkins.......2007-05-19
The songs on this CD were recorded between 1946 and 1961. They cover a wide range of his songs. The instrumentation is spare, with--normally--only Hopkins or playing or only a couple other backing players (sometimes we don't even know who the other musicians were). This is unelectrified blues, hearkening back to an earlier era in the history of the blues.
A handful of examples of his work on this CD:
"Baby please don't go." The cut features simple and spare guitar work by Hopkins. The liner notes comment that (page 12): "They say he only knew three chords on the guitar. I say that made him greater. . . .I saw how he turned technical limitations to aesthetic advantage." He repeats the title line several times to set a tone and atmosphere and implores her not to go to New Orleans. Hopkins plays alone, with no backing instruments.
"Mighty Crazy", too, features no backing musicians. He surely displays a "lived in" voice. He begins the song, as with "Baby please don't go" with a repeat of the title four times.
Finally, "Mojo Hand," one of his better known works. This cut features a nice rhythm section backing him (musicians' names not known). This has some of the best recording quality on the CD. He shows animated singing and spare but effective guitar work.
The liner notes summarize Hopkins' place in the blues world (pages 11-12): "Lightnin' Sam Hopkins was one of the towering geniuses of American music. At a time when big-city blues was electrifying the world, Lightnin' brought us back to the basics. He infused his country sensibility and singular personality into every song he sang." This represents a nice introduction to the work of one of the finest blues players.
The blues do not get any bluer than this................2006-08-17
The blues do not get any bluer than this. This was my first foray into Texas/folk blues, and it will most certainly not be my last, as the music on this CD are some of the most representative blues music I have ever heard. One of my favorite songs is a song sung by both Hopkins and Sonny Terry, Conversation Blues. If you do not like this song, the blues are simply not for you! But every song on here is exceptional, something I had not expected as I picked this up more out of curiosity than anything else. Now, it is one of my favorites to listen to, right up there with Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters. The album covers Hopkins career for a 20 year period, from 1941 to 1961, and is ideal for anyone who is starting out their Hopkins' collection(as I was).
Sam "Lightning" Hopkins learned the blues, at least in part, from Blind Lemon Jefferson, and for a time even became his guide. Let the music on this CD be your guide to Texas/folk blues. Surely there can be no better guide for an introduction into this genre.
A definite 5 star pick, especially for all that Rhino has managed to pack on here for the inexpensive price. A must have.
One thing to note however: If you believe from the outset that you will come to love Hopkins' music, Rhino's release of "Mojo Hand" is recommended; it is a 2-CD set of Hopkins career. Either way, you will not go wrong.
A Much Loved CD.......2006-03-03
Bought this CD as a gift and he really loves it. He grew up listening to Lightnin' Hopkins, so it really brought back some good memories for him.
Original "Gutbucket" Blues.......2006-02-26
A classic from a little known, at least by me, talent. Lightnin Hopkins is easily one of the best blues artists I ever heard. This is down home, back in the day, drafty shack wif dee leaky roof Blues.
i agree lightnin' hopkins is the real deal .......2006-01-02
i'm a huge fan of deep south blues..this is really passionate blues..some blues get on my nerves not enough passion and repetitive you get none of that with lightnin' hopkins he sings writes and played from the heart and fantastic collection by a superb artist that's up there with the best blues artist's
i.e jimmy page, jimi hendrix peter green muddy waters....
the reason i got into lightnin' hopkins was because i was watching a program on john peel's record box and "mojo hands" was in that box and they had about 30 seconds of performance footage i was hooked by the sheer brilliance..my best of it vagely different to this compltation but as i see there has been many that shine the torch on the brillance that is lightnin' hopkins

Customer Reviews:
Trailer Park Musical a good hear........2007-05-15
This musical is a good laugh and can bring up the spirits of any musical theatre buff. The voices are excellent and they showcase a great characterization of the personages represented in the show. It is a CD that entices the listener to go ahead and get tickets to the show and go see it. Also a personal acquaintance of mine Leslie Kritzer does a phenomenal job on the CD.
A Tornado of Fun!.......2007-04-10
This seems to be my year for finding recordings of lesser known musicals that are just awesome. It started with buying Zombie Prom, and continues with The Great American Trailer Park Musical!
But this show is just all-out fun! The tunes are catchy (I got one of them running through my head, right now) and the lyrics are quite clever. The three main ladies become the Greek chorus, telling us about life in their trailer park, Armadillo Acres, located in Starke, Florida. The show then focuses on one agoraphobic housewife who hasn't left her trailer in 20 years, and her husband who has had enough and starts fooling around with a stripper who is on the run from her boyfriend. Sound crazy? It is! And a whole lotta fun!
Yes, there are some explicit lyrics, but nothing excessive. So do yourself a favor and give this album a listen. You might just want to move into your own "manufactured home" before you know it.
One Of My Favorite New Musicals In Years.......2007-01-31
When I tell people about this show, I tell them it is far better than it had to be... With a title like that, the audience draw is already built in, but with great songs and a very clever story (without ever being offensive or degrading) this musical is a fun hit. And while it is not the old-school "Okalhoma" style musical, there are a lot of musical niceties about the show - layered melody lines, tight harmonies and clever clever phrases and lyrics. I fully recommend it.
The show (and Recording) ROCKS.......2006-09-26
The whole point of theatre, even in a tongue-in-cheek satire like this one, is to have some sense of truth. The "Great American Trailer Park Musical" completely hits the target dead-on. With it's ridiculous pop culture references, use of white trash musical pastiche (honky tonk country, corporate rock, wedding disco, and the like), and general use of bad taste in a visual (and audio) aesthetic, the show is one loaded joke that never tires. And the over the top performances, all grounded in this evident truth, provide an evening of Laugh after Laugh - more so than similar pieces like "Urinetown" and "Altar Boys".
Sure the language, for those who have expressed concern in above reviews, can be strong at times. But never is the language used in a matter of fact fashion. For those who have ever even remotely hung around a trailer park (as it quite Clearly states in the TITLE) or even around those who inhabit a Sociologists Jackpot of research, You know that crude humor and strong language are staple of the norm.
"Oklahoma" and "Cats" this show is not. However, "Great American Trailer Park Musical" is a definite piece to listen and pay attention to. With the general climate of new musicals to be either repackaged musicals from movies (Wedding Singer, Hairspray, Footloose, etc) or jukebox musicals (Mamma Mia, All Shook Up, Hot Feet, etc) - there is a new genre that is emerging, the "in-joke" musical. Trailer Park, Altar Boys, Spelling Bee, and title of show are examples of this. These are shows that blur satire and exaggeration with real life all the while dealing in a specific subject matter.
"Trailer Park" is a hip, new and exciting piece of music theatre, even if not groundbreaking. For those who like to play it safe may I suggest the "20 Great Broadway ShowStoppers" CD - all songs are from 1932 to 1949. You will be sure no profane language will infect you there.
Wasn't That Funny.......2006-07-29
I gave this a good listen, but did not find it all that funny ... or memorable.

Nice music but..........2007-03-08
I liked the music and the performances a lot, but there is no booklet to depict the performers, nor analyse the music or the arrangements, which are superb
Great CD.......2007-02-16
This is a great holiday CD. We used it for several holiday dinners this year.
A Noble and Festive Christmas.......2007-01-21
This is the best Christmas album you could ever get. It is the most stable as you do not have to think about it. This is the album you really sing along to. Brass makes everything festive, grand and noble; so will your Christmas! A gem for every year!
Meat and Potatoes.......2007-01-18
Since the release of this fine recording in 1967 there have been many fine
brass groups:The Canadian Brass, the Empire Brass, just to name a few.
Whereas these latter groups have all resorted to "gimmicks" such as unique arrangements to sell their albums this group of brass players from the Philadelphia Orchestra give us an album of good old "meat and potatoes" playing spiced with fine tone, good ensemble playing, and good tempos.
Totally Awesome.......2007-01-12
I love listening to this cd at christmas. The brass is so crisp, almost like being right there. You have to add this to your holiday collection, and for those of you who like brass, you will love it. I play the french horn and I esp. love hearing the french horn in it.

Superb Christmas Album.......2007-02-19
Mario Lanza infuses his characteristic beautiful vocal intensity into this collection of carols and Christmas songs.
The result is an outstanding album which will bring a lump to your throat and tears to your eye.
The recordings are old, but the Lanza magic makes this album a must-buy
Love Mario Lanza.......2007-01-28
I love Mario Lanza. He is in my top favs. I have wanted this album for ages and it is just as great as I knew it would be. I'll be back to buy more of Mario Lanza.
Mario Lanza - fantastic.......2007-01-15
Fantastic voice, wonderful classic Christmas songs. My all-time favourite version of O Holy Night - spine tingling.
Christmas Hymns & Carols: You Do Something to Me.......2007-01-12
Wonderful songs, great selections of songs sung by the greatest singer, Mario Lanza.
Pure hymnal power........2006-12-20
I have just spent the past six hours listening to snippets of every Christmas CD that I can find on Amazon, and this is the best by far. It's the purest rendition of the best Christmas hymns that are sung in church on Christmas Eve. No inane flourishes, no ignorant alterations, no arrogant amendments, just pure hymnal power. Don't agree? Type "christmas" in the Amazon music search box, listen to all the renditions of all the classic hymns such as "O Come All Ye Faithful" and when you are done you cannot but agree that Mario Lanza is not surpassed.
Update: I am now listening to the full CD and it is better even than I had hoped for. The beauty of Lanza's voice brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart.

Album Details
It Will Not have Escaped the Attention of Anyone Remotely Interested in Music that 2006 is Mozart Year; He was Born in Salzburg 250 Years Ago. Recordings of his Sublime Music have of Course Been Legion - but We Can Safely Say that None Compares with Living Era's Tribute, Mock Mozart. It is Described as a "diverting Collection of Parodies, Take-offs, Send-ups, Performances in Good and Bad Taste, Mixed with Genuine Tributes". The Title and Tone Are Set by Peter Ustinov's Extraordinary Array of Voices and Noises, Mock Mozart, and Continued by Victor Borge's Perennially Hilarious Mozart Opera. Adaptations Range from Raymond Scott's Lively in an 18th-century Drawing Room to No Fewer Than Four Interpretations of Rondo Alla Turca (By Red Ingle, henri Rene, Hazel Scott and Martha Eggerth and Jan Kiepura). Alec Templeton and Benny Goodman Show Us How Mozart Matriculates, and the Wonderful Florence Foster Jenkins Brings New Meaning to the Term `off-key'. What Would Mozart have Made of it All?

Customer Reviews:
Traditional Christmas Music .......2007-01-24
If you love traditional Christmas music, done in traditional style (i.e., no rock or jazz influence), this CD is for you. The Robert Shaw Chorale, the "gold standard" of quality choral music, sings much loved carols, with some lesser-known pieces as well. Some are a cappella; some include a full orchestral accompaniment. My favorites on this CD are "We Three Kings," "Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella," and "I Saw Three Ships."
The quintessential Christmas recording.......2005-12-09
This recording seems to elicit universal and heartfelt praise. Who am I to dispute that? The performance is terrific, just as described by the other Amazon reviewers, no doubt about it.
However, I do have one bone to pick with this recording. There just isn't enough of it. With material as good as this, that is a real loss!
A Top List Christmas CD.......2004-12-28
I bought this cd long ago, and have enjoyed it immensely each year. It is the perfect blend of celebration and meditation. Orchestra and choir combine in four distinct groupings, and a capella arrangements complete the masterful collection. The orchestral arrangements will make the hairs on your neck stand up, and your stomach quiver with all the excitement you ever felt as a child at Christmas. Adeste Fidelis is performed as few other ensembles have ever come close. The a capella arrangements will all, without exception, be on your yearly list of must-hear holiday arrangements. Truly a top list Christmas CD, essential for every family who celebrates this feast.
The best.......2004-01-02
I own approximately 35 Christmas choral CDs - including choirs and groups such as the Cambridge Singers and the King Singers. I also own two Christmas albums with Robert Shaw and the Atlantic symphony. This performance with the Robert Shaw Chorale is old but it is still my favorite. The arrangements are magnificent, the sound is brilliant, and the choir and orchestra are precise with wonderful volume control. Buy and enjoy!
How do you describe perfection?.......2003-12-14
This is my favorite Christmas CD. Nothing comes close. I thoroughly enjoyed learning much of the music in high school choir over 30 years ago. The music has never left me. The four medleys are the arrangements of Robert Russell Bennett titled "The Many Moods of Christmas". The arrangements seem to have a freshness about them even after listening numerous times.
Interspersed with the medleys are a cappella carols.
All of this music is wonderfully performed by the Robert Shaw Chorale, the a cappella selections recorded in 1957 and the medleys in 1963.
Four decades have proven that this is the standard in choral music. The clarity of text, the richness of tone, the beauty of harmony combine to present the message of Christmas in the manner that only music can do.
These words are no surprise to those familiar with choral music in the United States. If you are not so familiar, but would like to enjoy Christmas music at its most beautiful, you can do no better than acquiring this CD.

Great sounds.......2007-01-13
My mother had this on vinyl when I was growinf up over 30 years ago. It is timeless Christmas music that you just do not hear the likes of anymore.
I thoroughly enjoyed hearing all these songs again performed in this funky, jazzy a capella manner.
My All-time Favorite!.......2005-10-19
This Swingle Singers album is my very favorite Christmas music. I grew up with Swingle Singers music in the house. If you're not familiar with them, you'll be surprised by the "no words" jazzy style of singing. This is a great "background music" holiday CD, since lyrics can be distracting. However, don't be surprised when you start scatting along with every song.
"Christmastime" features music you'll recognize, like "White Christmas" and "Silent Night," performed in original Swingle Style. There are also beautiful foreign carols, some of which you'll know despite their unfamiliar names.
This album was remastered and released on CD in 2003. Alas, Amazon didn't have it linked to a "Swingle Singers" search, so I wasn't aware if it until now, Fall of 2005. I am so happy I'll be able to Swingle in the car this Christmas! Along with "A Charlie Brown Christmas" music by Guaraldi, and "The Christmas Album" by The Manhatten Transfer, and other favorites, my holiday music collection is nearly perfect!

Night/Long Distance.......2007-06-08
I bought this for the song "Hot Summer Night" & I'm very happy with this purchase. My husband has been looking for this song for a long time.
A brilliant British (not LA) hard rock album.......2007-04-14
I think I must have listened to a different CD. First of all, "If You Remember Me" IS on this CD, as a bonus (and unlisted) Track 20. (It was originally a single, not on the LP.) The sound quality is great: the CD sounds just like the LPs sounded, which is exactly as it should be: good, loud, solid rock. As for getting the credits wrong, the CD booklet simply reproduces the LP covers. The previous reviewer is clearly attacking the CD company, not this CD, or this band, who he seems to know little or nothing about. He obviously didn't listen to the end, anyway!
To say "Night was comprised of some hot LA studio musicians (including Nicky Hopkins) whose lead vocals were handled by Stevie Lange and onetime Mannfred Mann Earth Band lead vocalist Chris Thompson" and to compare them with "the typical pedestrian LA pop of the era" is just plain silly. The frontline of the band were all British: founder and vocalist Chris Thompson, stunning vocalist Stevie Lange and brilliant guitarist Robbie McIntosh. So, in fact, was keyboard player Nicky Hopkins (the only person to have played with the Beatles, the Stones and the Who). And the great bassist Billy Kristian is from New Zealand. So yup, that's really one LA band!
Night were actually the second phase of a British rock band that had three incarnations. Chris Thompson founded them as a London pub band, Filthy McNasty, with Stevie Lange, McIntosh and Kristian. They went to LA to record an album, but producer Richard Perry insisted on changing some of the band's other personnel. That's when they changed their name to Night. Their second album kept the core members of Thompson, Lange, McIntosh and Kristian but used different sessionmen for keyboards and drums.
The third incarnation of the band, when they returned to London, was called Chris Thompson & The Islands. That's when I was lucky enough to see them, in the famous Half Moon pub in Putney - crowded, hot, sweaty, loud, the perfect venue to be blown away by Stevie Lange's magnificent vocals.
I can understand the comparison with Heart, at least on a couple of tracks, but the whole "LA pop" description is rubbish. A far better comparison is with British post-punk bands of the time like Any Trouble/the Clive Gregson Band and the Joe Jackson Band - i.e. musicians who weren't afraid to play loud, driving, exciting rock music, but could actually play their instruments (and that includes their voices). Night, under whatever name, were a superb live band, and this CD has some outstanding tracks, including "Hot Summer Nights", "If You've Gotta Make a Fool of Somebody", "Shocked", "Love on the Airwaves" and "If You Remember Me". Buy it, turn the volume up, and roast!
AVERAGE BAND W/ a COUPLE OF ABOVE AVERAGE SONGS.......2006-10-23
Night was comprised of some hot LA studio musicians (including Nicky Hopkins) whose lead vocals were handled by Stevie Lange and onetime Mannfred Mann Earth Band lead vocalist Chris Thompson.
For the most part they did not live up to expectations but did land a couple of singles in the Top 20 from their debut LP. The first was the Walter Egan song "Hot Summer Nights" with Lange on the lead. She didn't sound like that other Stevie, more like Ann Wilson, and the Night take certainly does sound more than a little like a Heart wannabee. The other hit "If You Remember Me" was handled by Thompson, whose husky baritone was still very recognizable from "Blinded By The Light" a few years prior.
Beyond the two singles there's only a small scattering of songs that rise slightly above the typical pedestrian LA pop of the era.
Both of the aforementioned Top 20 songs are largely forgotten, never getting any oldie radio play, and to this day have never turned up on any other compilation whatsover.
If you're still interested be aware of this:
This double-on-one CD was released by the notorious label RENAISSANCE. They have butchered more re-releases than anyone and it's truly criminal that they continue to get away with their ineptness.
A short list of their transgressions include....
1. Horrible sonics
2. Inconsistant db levels
3. Dubbing from scratchy record albums while claiming "remastered" product
4. Dubbing those records at a slow speed(!) resulting in very noticeable drag.
5. Screwing up the times
6. Screwing up the credits
Some of the artists who have been victimized by Renaissance include U.K., LAKE, CHARLIE, and HAMILTON, JOE FRANK & REYNOLDS.
And yes they have wreaked their havoc on this release as well. It sounds muddy and was dubbed at old school low levels.
But the biggest gaffe of all was dropping "If You Remember Me" in order to fit both albums on the CD.
It's inconceivable that the song they chose to eliminate was the biggest hit that Night had!! (#17 Top 40, and Top 10 AC)
( FYI -This means that this is one of the few Top 20 hits left that has never seen the light of digital day )
>You have been warned: If it says Renaissance on the label....take a pass!

Album Description
They are Broadway's featured performers who are so unique, surprising and unforgettable that they find their way right past the star's spotlight, into the audiences' hearts and minds - a dream come true not only for the performers but for the composers, lyricists and book writers who create this very special material. This PLAYBILL Editors' Choice collection brings together performances that define the art of scene-stealing - performances from original cast recordings you couldn't find anywhere else but on Masterworks Broadway.
Customer Reviews:
Great disc for fans of musicals.......2007-05-17
This disc contains 12 real show stoppers. Only the most dedicated (fanatical?) collector is likely to have all the original albums already and there's great stuff here. Many fans (i.e. the young ones) will be unfamiliar with Streisand as Miss Marmelstein. Hilarious! Other highlights for me: Randy Graff in "City of Angels" and D'Jamin Bartlett in "Night Music". If you're a fan of the golden age (and slightly later) musicals, you'll enjoy this very much.
Here's to the ladies !.......2007-05-16
No one stops a show like a lady, and here are some of the best ! A great gift, or a great introduction to Broadway for neophytes ! Thanks to the record companies for making these available ! Enjoy !
The best compilation in years..........2007-04-03
Since I received this CD, I haven't been able to stop listening to it. I discovered some new songs I'd never heard and re-discovered many old favorites. The best part of this collection, though, is the pure joy of hearing some of the greatest singers, lyrics, and music ever to grace a Broadway stage. Listening to this CD all the way through is like finding a radio station that plays nothing but songs you love--songs you didn't even realize you were dying to hear until they started playing. An absolute must-have for any fan of musical theater, or any fan simply of great music.
