Marilyn Manson started out as a depraved, marginally talented group of freaks that played a caustic but undeveloped brand of metallic industrial noise. Then Trent Reznor stepped into the studio for seven months with the band, and Manson emerged with the most intense, visceral, mechanical metal album since The Downward Spiral. Antichrist Superstar is a horror-house of grisly atrocities that stains as indelibly as a bathful of warm blood. Brooding rhythms collide with corrosive samples and buzzsaw guitar riffs, while vocalist Marilyn croons irresistible melodies in the voice of a vagrant regurgitating broken light-bulb shards. Essential listening, regardless of how much input Reznor had. --Jon Wiederhorn

5 out of 5 stars The "Sgt. Peppers" of our time!.......2007-08-01

This is MY "Sgt. Peppers!" It flows so beautifully and tells such a great story. It evokes incredible emotions with the songwriting and lyrics and has stunning textures throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Marilyn Manson is a supernaturally gifted genius........2007-07-16

It's no wonder he has intimidated sooo many people from old school metalheads to christians and goths. He stepped too far out of a lot of peoples comfort zone.
Antichrist Superstar is in my opinion his ultimate. Each song is a masterpiece and you never get bored because its so orchestrated in sound dimension, he manipulates his voice so perfectly whereas most imitators just sound like cookie monster. The horror samples perfectly enhance each song without distraction.
It's funny because I use to hate Marilyn Manson, BUT it was only right-wingers manipulations and lies, until I gave this cd one listen... now nothing compares!
Anti-people, now you've gone to far, so here's your Antichrist, Superstar.

I don't listen to this band very often but this is just one of those classic - totally awesome albums that I can play anytime. Experience it all the way through -don't skip a track. Notice the lyrics -they are a special part of this album. Moody, violent, revolting, political, beautiful. This is powerful -brutally honest expression. It literally makes you feel ill. I love this cd -what a great work of art by Marilyn Manson.

Rued Langgaard (1893-1952) was the odd duck of Danish music. He remained doggedly Romantic at a time when Romanticism was out, and he had his own funny little experiments with music that noboby particularly liked. We owe a debt to Chandos and Danacord for keeping Langgaard's music current. Music of the Spheres (1916-18) predates Gyorgy Ligeti by 50 years with its bright, pointillistic assertions and groups of ideas that evolve to their own inner logic. As demonstrated in Tonebilleder (Four Tone Pictures), Langgaard's music has an openness that allows his tone clusters to expand, contract, or simply repeat (as Ligeti would do much later). Discover Langgaard. --Paul Cook

5 out of 5 stars A work of awesome proportions and intimate emotion.......2006-12-11

This Chandos disc containing two pieces by Danish composer Rued Langgaard is one of the most pleasant surprises this fan of modern-classical music has come across. Langgaard (1893-1952) was an outsider and eccentric in Danish music life, a virtuoso organist who succeeded only in his late forties at getting a position, and a composer of wild tales of the Antichrist coming into the world who found it almost impossible to get his music played. In the late 1960s, his music was rediscovered by scholars and his importance in Danish musical history is now certain, but he is still little-known in the modern-classical scene. We should be grateful to the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra & Choir and Gennady Rozhdestvensky for their performance and to Chandos for releasing the recording.

"Music of the Spheres" for soprano, chorus, orchestra, and distant orchestra (1916-1918) is stunning. The innovations here are considerable: exploiting the performance space in the use of two orchestras, writing for an "open" piano where glissandi are produced directly on the strings, and of course the clusters and polyphonic webs, massive and seemingly motionless blocks of sound reminiscent of Gyorgy Ligeti. Indeed, the Hungarian composer exclaimed that he was a Langaard imitator when Per Norgard showed him a copy of the score in 1968. But the purity of the string writing reminds me of Alexander Knaifel, and the massive proportions of the orchestral writing at its loudest is somewhat like Sandstroem's "The High Mass".

But, as is often said, it wouldn't matter how much Langgaard were ahead of his time in "Music of the Spheres" if the music wasn't great. And it is, one of the most moving half-hours of orchestral music I'm acquainted with. Langgaard was a Romantic in a time when Romanticism was out of fashion, and the proportions of what the listener may recognize as struggle, momentary defeat, and victory are just as powerful as in Mahler.

"Music of the Spheres" is an exceptional piece in Langgaard's total output. The "Four Tone Pictures" for soprano and orchestra are somewhat more typical of his art. Written on poems by J. Blicher-Clausen, Ivan Turgeniev, and Holger Drachmann, they are fairly tame lieder. These suggest that the modern-classical fan can pass on most of Langgaard's music, but "Music of the Spheres" is so good that at least this disc should be in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most extraordinary works ever written.......2003-11-21

Music of the Spheres, by the eccentric Danish composer Rued Langgaard, really is the work that has everything. Written between 1916 and 1918, it uses a multitude of techniques that would not be rediscovered until after the wars. Multifarious tone clusters, floating micropolyphony, a piano played directly on the strings, an entire offstage orchestra, blurred choral singing, prefigurations of minimalism: you name it, this work has it. Yet it also has Scriabinesque ecstasy, Straussian opulence and a wacked-out religious subtext in which Christ and Antichrist clash in the violent climax to the whole work.

None of this would matter, though, if the music weren't any good. But it is good--probably the best thing Langgaard ever wrote (so far I've heard about 30 of his works, and none of them matches this one). The various short episodes flow one into another with perfect clarity and logic, the orchestration is superlative, and the dramatic writing at the climax is sonically overwhelming. Fortunately, Chandos match this work with a tremendous performance by the Danish National Radio Symphony and Choir, conducted by that indefatigable servant of underperformed music, Gennady Rozhdestvensky. This recording should be considered the best currently available, and it outstrips the rivals with ease.

Any other work isn't likely to fare so well in comparison to this, but the Four Tone Pictures are by no means eclipsed. Opulent songs in a Straussian harmonic language--though lacking the German composer's gift for melody--they are the perfect way to come down from the musical high of Music of the Spheres.

5 out of 5 stars Music to Amaze Your Ears.......2003-07-23

Rued Langgaard was the man that time forgot. Completely neglected in his native Denmark because he did not fall within the prevailing neo-classic aesthetic set by Nielsen, Langgaard was rediscovered in the 60s when Per Norgard gave a score of Music of the Spheres to Gyorg Ligeti at a competition and after a minute Ligeti announced, "it seems as though I am a Langgaard imitator." Though Langgaard was essentially a conservative late romantic composer, he was capable of some real moments of innovation. He not only presaged Ligeti's color style, but also elements of minimalism, most especially in his string quartets.

Music of the Spheres is Langgaard at his most original. This work is a stunning series of small tone pictures. From the very beginning of the work, with the shimmering cluster of string harmonies over ominous timpani, through out the work, experiment reigns. Langgaard is always tonal, but in this work shows a fascination with orchestral sound and tonal clusters that was probably about 50 years ahead of the times. And yet, in the middle of the work there are sections that could come directly from Schonberg's early Gurrelieder or even the symphonies of Gade. It is a truly astonishing aural sound feast and should be a staple of the repertoire.

The accompanying Tone Pictures, four tone poems on nature themes, are also quite beautiful, though much more conventional as music. Here is Langgaard the Romantic and he is quite a good Romantic actually. The orchestrations are lush, the harmony sensuous and there is just enough oddness to mark the work as Langgaard's and no one else's.

This Chandos disc is exemplary in sound and the performance by Rozhdestvensky is definitive I think. Even if you are afraid of unusual or experimental work, this is a disc that you can take to your heart. It is stunning and beautiful and has my highest recommendation.

4 out of 5 stars Blacken The Skies!.......2001-09-08

Yes, on the surface, you may immediately pass them off as ‘just another Black Metal band trying to be like EMPEROR’. This is where the misconception sets in, the Black Metal genre has been so flooded by mediocre bands, that even those whose hearts are truly in the music get tossed aside, in favor of the ‘Big Guns’! Yes, Triumphator does employ excessive use of the blast beat to make their point; yes, the guitar work is at times so hyperactive that it sounds indistinguishable from the crash cymbals. But, what you’re not noticing is the precision, and subterranean grasp of technique, which is terribly under-rated in this day and age. I would definitely go on record as saying this is just as abrasive, bitterly fast and soul-blinding as MARDUK, but Triumphator have a knack for production and sound quality that also normally gets pushed aside in the BM community, most likely to make room for the ever-important ‘image!’ Okay, so the band does become excessive with the Anti-Christian lyrical imagery, but let that not shield your ears to the surgical accuracy of their songwriting. Wings Of Antichrist will not only appeal to fans of blistering Black Metal, but also to those whose consciousnesses are susceptible to grinding Death Metal and even the champions of SODOM, DESTRUCTION and WEHRMACHT! Triumphator’s brand of extremity is designed to simultaneously melt your auditory sense, psyche and life-essence!!

5 out of 5 stars Night of the TRIUMPHATOR, "Wing of the Antichrist".......2000-08-23

Members of Marduk, Funeral Myst, and Shadow Records have united in the most unholy of congregations in order to initiate the blackest of firestorm onslaughts upon this wretched earth, in the dark form of TRIUMPHATOR. This band exemplifies pure fire breathing Satanic art. Arioch's vocals are freshly resurrected from his shallow grave, uniquely exhibiting more sickened death influences than black and scorch through the bleak soundscapes of each infernal track. His intense riffing produces both atmospheres of total devastation and grim, mournful sorrow. Fredrik's cranium splitting blast beats need no introduction. This contribution certainly adds the dimension that allows for the analogy between Marduk and Triumphator, due to the obvious similarity in drumming styles. This area lends itself to a description of shear velocities developed here, which are, of course, dominated by furious blast beating or near blast beat tempos, with the singular exception of "Crushed Revelation". Placed in the midst of the recording, the slow paced "Crushed Revelation" is the mentally ill product of gravebound demonic possession. It lumbers slowly through pools of blood and lifeless bodies in a both torturous and triumphant style; very original to say the least. Lyrics are essentially what you'd expect from such a beast of a band, however, it should be mentioned that lyrical imput came from mutliple noteworthy sources including Nattfursth of SORHIN and Morgan of MARDUK. To conclude this review, I'll leave the reader with an advisory. If you enjoy the blackest works of bands like SETHERIAL, SORHIN, INFERNAL 666, DARK FUNERAL, and BLOT MINE, then you will most definitely cherish TRIUMPHATOR's "Wings of the Antichrist". If your interpretation of what true black metal should be varies from the above mentioned legion, you are lost in confusion and will detest this album's raw ungodly energy. -I-

    4 out of 5 stars Triumphator - Unholy Madness.......2000-07-04

Well this is certainly ugly! Triumphator plow through 8 trackswith hell-blazing speed and demonic aggression. I wouldn't label thisMarduk cloning, there is something definitely different here, of course the inspiration / influence is there, but it is a bit more varied... I am really quite fond of this release. I like the packaging as well.. On the very back there's some chick (real life photo) looking all bloodied up with chains and in some kinda orgasmic matter :)

5 out of 5 stars awesome simply awesome.......2000-03-12

this is awesome Black Metal executed at the best of ability, member of Marduk and Funeral Myst make this group awesome, comparisons to Marduk will arise but this record is a bit more varied and more raw. One of the mest Black Metal albums.

5 out of 5 stars Just as the booklet says. "True Norwegian Black Metal".......2005-03-11

They truly perfect their craft with this release. This is an incredible ep. If this had been an LP and had a logner running time (25min) this would be one of my favorite Black Metal release of all time. Sure it brings nothing new too the BM scene BUT it perfects it and show's what Black Metal really is all about. The song "Gorgoroth" is one of their best really captures what they're all about. The closing song Sorg is perfect in every way and leaves you wanting more. A MUST for any true BM fan. Can't recomend it enough, however if you dislike black metal this cd or any other Gorgoroth release won't change your mind. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars True Norwegian Black MetaL indeed.......2004-04-16

It takes a lot of guts and courage to put TNBM on the cover!
They prove so on this massacre filled masterpiece. Hat 's vokills are disguistingly frightening and Infernus' guitar's screams of destruction are great! GorGorotH certainly fits in the True Norge Black MetaL section Hail Satan

    4 out of 5 stars Gorgoroth's aim avoids cliche.......2003-03-26

Gorgoroth's key objective is emotion. On "Antichrist", their concept is based around the mysteries of medieval metaphor, through melodies and (now) lengthy opuses reflecting a romantic touch to the dark ages. This would turn into cliche by lesser artists, but Gorgoroth make it beautiful. The sound production is fuzzier and less distinct than on their previous release, percussion is ritually repetitive and vocals now and then form a clean chant, all in order for this band to broaden their horizons in sorrow-filled music. Initially seemingly aimless, this disc turns out to be a masterful, almost baroque-inspired piece of dark art.

5 out of 5 stars TRUE BLACK METAL!.......2000-01-07

Well, what i gotta say? GORGOROTH RULEZ and Antichrist is one of the most important black metal albums ever!

    4 out of 5 stars Gorgoroth's Second Opus.......1999-10-19

In my opinion, "Antichrist" is quite an obscure Gorgoroth record. It has the capacity to maintain the ever grim bleakness and obscurity that is trademark of Gorgoroth's method of destruction but at 25 minutes, there isn't enough time to generate material comparable to that of their much hailed "Under the sign if Hell" album. As for the music on "Antichrist", Infernus' riffing is clearly the result of demonic possession. The vocals are divided amongst two unholy maniacs, Pest & Hat. Pest is the superior vocalist if your measuring stick is ouright insanity. On the drums, or "wooden coffins" as Gorgoroth would explain, is the superstar Frost of SATYRICON. Although, his performance is only average & repetitive in comparison to his highly technical drumming with SATYRICON. In conclusion, Gorgoroth values black metal expression in its orignal and savagely caustic form as their method of portraying the evil aesthetic. This album is more gauged to the eccentric Gorgoroth fan & collector.

4 out of 5 stars Spooky Remixes 2.......2007-05-12

First and foremost this is a CD primarily for HUGE Manson fans or collectors like myself. I rated this a 4 because as it is pretty good but definitely lacking content. The songs are very long and most people won't even recognize its Manson songs they are hearing. Most of them are extremely early works and only dedicated fans will know them. The main element lacking is singing, the techno is great but repetetive and there just isn't enough to the songs. I do have a choice few tracks that I did fall in love with, you will just have to try it for yourself to see if you are truely a Spooky Kid. I liked this CD much more than 'Coke and Sodomy' but it is evident that the same person remixed both CD's so it is still overly repetetive.

5 out of 5 stars Listening to it now.......2005-03-10

I just got this in yeterday along with 2 others i orderd. I absolutly love it. I have been a manson song for as long as i can remember and i love to hear there music portraid so well. Although there are some songs that i thought could have been added , i still love the songs they coverd.

    4 out of 5 stars No Title.......2004-02-27

This CD is pretty good, but, as has been said by quite a few people, the song choices could have been better. They should have just completely left out the PoaAF songs, as they don't go to strings well. "A Place in the Dirt" and "Speed of Pain" were great choices because they fit the style of the insturments playing the parts, "The Nobodies" and "Man That You Fear" may have been other selections they may have wanted to put on the CD. Other than that, the CD was fantastic.

3 out of 5 stars its ok but............2003-10-08

i dont know, the idea of doing a string version of manson's greatest songs is a damn good idea. However, it was not pulled off as well as id hoped. when listening to these tracks, i always got the feeling that something was missing, while each song is tabbed to near perfection, the overall package still seemed kind of cheap.

i dont know if its the musician's fault, bad or equipment or just simply done intentionally, alot of the string insturements give off a scratchy tone while leading which does not sound good.

another complain is the choice of songs, some were great choices, but when leading mansons vocal parts, the melody becomes bland and makes you wish that that part was just taken out.

overall, lots of effort was put into this and it is good, but just feels like much more could have been done

5 out of 5 stars My thought on the Cd.......2003-06-20

In this CD Marilyn Manson Portrays a different Image, I myself have been a Manson fan since the 7th grade, this CD gives his musci new meanings and shows he truly is an ecclectic Artist when he can take his area of hard gothic rock and transform it to this wonderful symphony. I highly consider all Manson Fans to purchase this Item.

    3 out of 5 stars Wonder-ful........2003-05-05

The album cover is very... stupid, to be blunt. It's really not what I think of when I think of these songs or Marilyn Manson but the string covers are excellent, despite the fact that these songs are probably the most repetitive or weakest choices they could have made excepting the 'Place In The Dirt' song. Most of them are overplayed and outplayed in concert, or done to death in live albums, dvds, vhs, or cover cds, well, here they are again! It doesn't breathe new life into songs that have lost their magic some years ago, but it's fun for awhile. There could easily have been more music or better selection. ...

As One of the Most Legendary Champions of Bach Karl Richter's Many (And in Some Instances Multiple) Recordings of the Composers Cantata's Arguably is his Greatest Achievement. Richter Enlisted Many of the Finest Vocalists in their Prime During the 1950's Through the Early 70's for These Recordings Elevating the Neglected Form at the Time to the Level of Grand Opera. His Conducting, Especially for his Day as Well Remains Remarkably Animated and Fluent Yet Always Respectful of Bach's Underlying Powerful Architectural Components. These Recordings Set the Standard and for Many Today Remain the Benchmark Performances by which all New Ones Continue to Be Judged.

5 out of 5 stars Bach in the Bach Tradition.......2006-12-16

I believe I owe it to the period performance movement for making me feel like I am committing a sin when I don't listen to Gardiner's or Hogwood's Bach (or Handel, or any Baroque composer for that matter). If, say, I put in Shaw's recording of the B minor mass, or most certainly Klemperer's recording of the St. Mathew passion, I feel that I should somehow be ashamed for what I am doing. There may be some type of Freudian truth buried deep within my being ashamed; however, there has always been an exception to my modern instrument guilts. This is, of course, the Bach recordings of Karl Richter; and more specifically, Richter's immortal survey of the sacred cantatas (well, 75 of them anyway). I received this set as a gift when I graduated from college, and I have been constantly listening since. The music of Bach has meant more to me than any other composer, and the Richter recordings show Bach's true genius at full speed ahead.

Don't get me wrong, I love Gardiner's recordings of the B-minor mass and the St. Matthew Passion; and I do believe that period performance practice reveals a totally new dimension of Bach which can sometimes be overlooked (or, "glossed-over" as the case may be with Klepmerer and others of the like). However, any academic arguments favoring Gardiner over Richter are simply meaningless to me. As Glenn Gould said, its not the type of instruments used that count, but rather, a deep respect for the innate structures of the music; this is what's important, and to accomplish this he believed that we must get rid of the incorrect and outdated notion that by "glossing over" these structures, it somehow improves upon them. I think Gould is absolutely correct in saying its respect for the musical structures that counts most; this is the only duty incumbent upon interpreters of Baroque music (and especially Bach). With this in mind, how can Richter not be the supreme interpreter? Richter gives us Bach in the Bach tradition, and I believe that this is in no small part due to his deep understanding of the same Lutheranism which was in the mind of Bach when he wrote this glorious music. To quote yet another Bach authority, Albert Schweitzer once said "Only he who sinks himself into Bach's emotional world, who lives and thinks with him, [...] can rightly bring Bach's music to the listener". I can think of no one who fits the description quite like Karl Richter.

Well, all arguments aside, the music on these 26 [!] discs are absolutely unsurpassed. I was a bit worried before I received this set, as I knew that in Richter's latter years, he did seem to take various liberties with the scores (more specifically, a slowing of the tempi to the point that it takes us out of the Bach tradition). However, I can safely say that these rumored liberties are nowhere to be found in this set, just pure Bach. I wont dare try to single out notable performances of this massive set (I would be here all night, and I am sure you are becoming tired of reading this anyway). However, one cantata specifically stood out for me during my first few hours with the set (and has since stuck with me); this being BWV 132 (4th Sunday in Advent cantata). This specific cantata, can speak for the entire set in terms of the soloist supremacy above all other Bach cantata recordings (how can you go wrong with Edith Mathis, Anna Reynolds, Peter Schreier, and Theo Adam - with Ursula Buckel and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau elsewhere on the set).

So, finally, this set has exactly what I want in a survey of the cantatas - that is, the genius of J.S. Bach is in the driver's seat, not the conductors. While Gardiner has his moments (and when he does, they are fantastic), and Klemperer did at least get everyone talking about Bach again, I believe Richter's interpretations are the standard by which this music should be played and heard. This set is a landmark in the history of Bach recordings, and although quite expensive, it really should be in the collections of all lovers of music.

    - By the way, the set comes in a large slipcover (as shown above by Amazon), with the five original fold-open cases inside; each made of an extremely sturdy, glossy-coated cardboard (as shown above by me [hopefully]). Each disc is in a paper sleeve.

4 out of 5 stars A Time Capsule of Sheer Delight.......2006-12-15

I treasured these recordings as a music student in high school and college in the '70's. Although newer, 'historically correct' recordings were emerging, Richter's musicality, if one will, still attracted me to these Archive recordings. This set is a bargin considering all the music there is to digest. DG's remastering is excellent-the warm analog sound does not suffer what can sometimes be a strident digitized reincarnation. DG's engineers and hardware were always on the cutting edge and these recordings speak to that fact. Say what one will about the oddities of interpertation, there is music in evey bar. Before I began listening, I though that I should prepare myself to forgive Richer for his position in history and look the other way when so called historically inaccurate idioms presented themselves. Yes, they are there, but, the younger listener will be quite astonished to find amazing vitality and sweep of phrase and articulation. Richter's tempi are often suprisingly brisk. The roster of soloists speaks for itself. If you are a musician interested in the genesis of Bach interpertation, this set is a must-have. It is often said that many Bach conductors after Richter took up where he left off. This group of recordings is a testament to his influence. Bravo DG !
