You can't run, you ain't gonna survive..........2007-07-23

UFO was on a roll so to speak after their breakthrough 'Force It' and the guitar wizardry of Michael Schenker started to gain the band serious notoriety in hard rock circles. In May of 1976, 'No Heavy Pettin' continued the run of magnificience. Danny Peyronel had joined the band during the supporting tour for 'Force It' but he only lasted throught the supporting tour for the next album. He was replaced on a more permenant basis by Paul Raymond, however Peyronel was the first keyboard player in UFO after former Ten Years After keysman Chuck Churchill, who had played on the two prior LP's strictly in a session capacity. "Natural Thing" blows out of the speakers with a monsterous riff that works magic as the album opener. Sordid tales of groupies always seem to make great rock songs and both "Thing" and "I'm a Loser" both became concert staples, the latter featuring both acoustic and metal genius from Mr. Schenker. Other favorites include "Can You Roll Her" and "Reasons Love" which features an incredibly fast guitar solo from Schenker. Peyronel contributed "Highway Lady" another fast and loose rocker which tempowise seemed to fit with many of the speed rockers on the record. Not known for being a great blues band didn't stop UFO from unleashing the album's crowing jewel (in my humble opinion anyway)"On With the Action", a burning, seething groovefest with Phil's tough lyrics about the desolation of the streets and Michael's trademark tone, slowed down to a molten pace, then ratched up for another mindblowing lead break. Leo Lyons' production, his last with UFO after three trailblazing records, captured the essence of Michael's sound and this just might be his best guitar sound UFO record. Some duds towards the end (including a another cover that blows!) don't hurt the majesty of another cornerstone release by the Seventies greatest unsung hard rock band. What the hell is that monkey doing anyway?

Awesome Heavy Rock 'n' Roll.......2007-02-13

This is possibly my favourite UFO studio album although it's a tough call between two or three. It still stands up well with today's music due to the quality vocals, great guitar playing and a solid rhythm section. It lacks the polish and variety of "Lights Out" but wow does it rock with dazzling 70's style lead guitar! I understand that the band were worried about the sound with Peyronnel on keyboards and he later left to be replaced with Paul Raymond. This line up certainly created a tasty enough studio sound with classics such as "Natural Thing" and "I'm a Loser" and one of my all time faves "On With The Action" (Phil Mogg lyrically at his best). All the tunes are great even with a few trademark clunky lyrics. Also one of the best album covers ever!

Hello, Danny boy!.......2006-07-16

No Heavy Petting was the third UFO album in a row to be produced by Ten Years After bassist Leo Lyons. In terms of overall sound, this is about as good as the two albums before it, 'Phenomenon' and 'Force It'.....the guitars are very well recorded and prominent in the mix, the bass and drums sound crisp and clear. In terms of songs, I don't think this album is as strong it's two predecessors. I think all five songs on the first half (or side one, for those us who still have this on just vinyl) are absolutely terrific. 'Natural Thing' (the only tune on which bassist Pete Way gets a writing credit) is an upbeat and very hard rocking opening cut, with then new keyboardist Danny Peyronel getting in some piano playing during the middle. Very strong, heavy riff from Schenker. The next two cuts, ' I'm A Loser' and 'Can You Roll Her', are both more than satisfying melodic hard rockers....the former starts out acoustic, but gets heavier as it goes along and features some oustanding drumming from Andy Parker, and the former is a showcase for Peyronel and once again, feature some stellar drumming from Parker.

' Belladonna' is to me a very overlooked ballad. UFO did this type of song very well when they had Schenker, whose crying guitar solo in the middle may be the best thing I think he has ever done and is to me one of the highlights of the album. This is immediately followed by the speedy hard rocker 'Reasons Love', another big highlight of the album. Schenker hits another high with his lightning fast solo, almost making his guitar sound like a bagpipe at one point!

The second half, unfortunately, is rather weak and somewhat forgettable, especially when compared to the first half. The tempos are slower, the tunes not so catchy, the vocal lines not as exciting and/or memorable. It's a shame Pete Way didn't contribute more songs.

Still, the first half is great and worth buying the album for. Another must have for us fans of UFO during their Michael Schenker years.

Incomplete and not the place to start........2006-05-08

After the breakout of "Force It", UFO sort of stalled on this follow up. The problem? For me, the album feels incomplete. There are 4 standout tracks - the blistering kick-off of "Natural Thing", "I'm A Loser" "Can You Roll Her" and "Reasons Love". My reasoning for these tracks as standouts? Michael Schenker, of course. He is in top form on these tracks. Special attention has to be given to his playing on "I'm A Loser". Yes, the song starts as down-on-your-luck, acoustic lament. But, midway through the song, Schenker just takes over and lifts the song into dimensions only the best guitar players could manage. He drives the song headlong into the stratosphere, and you the listener are left emotionally spent by songs' end. Side two (tracks 6-9 these days), is where the album loses all momentum after the cruch of "Reasons Love". Things get better on the next two UFO albums, Lights Out" and "Obsession".

MY FAVORITE.......2006-03-16

Great "old school" UFO at their best. Original, Hard, Fast and imaginative all at the same time. I literally wore out the album in my teens. No Heavy Petting is a classic! With a couple mellow tunes like " Belladonna and Martain Landscape" (thrown in to let Schenkers fingers cool) it is indeed a well rounded rock-n-roll CD. If you like first-rate guitar work loaded with gracious amounts of originality, No Heavy Petting has what you'r looking for. WHAT A GEM!

Relax.

This is the same master used for the 2000 version. So, unless you're just dying to have the LP mini-sleeve for five times the price, don't knock yourself out.

One of the best of the two-fer's.......2003-12-26

I already had "Lights Out" on cd when I found myself with the chance to pick up the "No Heavy Petting/Lights Out" cd, and it's a true testament to the excellence of "Lights Out" that I didn't hesitate. Someone, somewhere would always be on the lookout for a copy of "Lights Out", and I knew that I could always find a home for it. It's that good. "No Heavy Petting" featured "Natural Thing" as it's biggest draw, but don't get the idea that you're buying it for this classic alone. "I'm A Loser", "Can You Roll Her" and "On With The Action" all rock righteously, while on the critically underrated "Highway Lady", Michael's guitar never ceases to amaze me as he tosses off licks that leave you with your head shaking. Another amazing thing is the fact that this killer album from this pioneering British metal band isn't available domestically. (But we can get all of the garbage we can hold down from Sting and Phil Collins.)

Two absolute classics!.......2002-05-06

No heavy Petting marked the last UFO album before the Ron Nevison produced Lights out and Obsession. Often overlooked by UFO fans, No Heavy Petting is full of classic UFO moments.
Michael and Phil, regardless of their feelings towards one another, are a brilliant songwriting team. There isn't a weak cut on NHP, and a couple of classics. Martian Landscape is a beautiful ballad, with shimmering guitar and keyboards. My fave cut is On With The Action. Brilliant tension-building verses climaxing in one of Schenkers' finest solos.
Moving on, what can one say about Lights Out that hasn't already been said? In addition to Obsession, the absolute zenith of the Schenker-Mogg-Parker-Raymond-Way era UFO. Produced brilliantly by Ron Nevison, every cut is a killer. Not a weak moment.

Keyboards did not ruin this hard rocking CD!!!.......2001-06-04

Some had already panned "No Heavy Petting" before it's 1976 release due to the presence of Danny Peyronel's keyboard contribution. Unfortunately, these critics couldn't have been more wrong. Even though Peyronel did not enjoy touring, and left after this album, he did contribute his writing ability to three songs which were among the best on the album. As far as Paul Raymond's appearance and the "Lights Out" part of this CD, let history speak for itself, as "Lights Out" thrusted UFO into the spotlight with songs like "Too Hot To Handle," "Lights Out," and "Love To Love." If you like these two albums, you shoudl also enjoy "Force It," which in my opinion, is the best!

Another awesome Schenker-era UFO release.......2005-11-21

No Heavy Petting (1976.) UFO's fifth studio album.

INTRODUCTION:
UFO had their musical beginnings in Great Britain in the late sixties. Taking their name from a legendary music club, the band recorded two albums in the early seventies with a weird-but-still-excellent space rock sound all their own. These two albums, featuring guitarist Mick Bolton, were great albums but did not sell well or do well on the charts. Not long after their release, Bolton parted ways with the band. This was not the end of the band by any means, but rather, a new beginning. After Bolton left, the group had Scorpions guitarist Michael Schenker play for them as a temporary stand-in. The group was so satisfied with the young German guitar virtuoso, that he became a permanent member of the band! The band would record many albums with Schenker, including many of those that would be deemed the band's finest works! How does 1976's No Heavy Petting, the third one to feature Schenker, measure up? Read on and find out!

OVERVIEW:
UFO released their fifth studio album, Force It, in 1976. The album featured Phil Mogg on lead vocals, Pete Way on bass, Andy Parker on drums, Michael Schenker on lead guitar, and Danny Peyronel on keyboards. This was Peyronel's only album with the band; he'd be replaced by Paul Raymond on the following recordings. REVIEW:
During UFO's heyday with Michael Schenker from 1973-1979, they attained an all-time high they would never again reach. Phenomenon, the first of the Schenker albums, was an awesome classic hard rock album, but it didn't score very many hits for the group. Alternatively, Force It, the second album to feature Schenker, took the band's sound in a more commercial-oriented direction, and they scored many more hits as a result. However, it did leave a lot to be desired. Finally, on the No Heavy Petting album, UFO managed to find that "happy medium" sound - one that would score them several hits, and at the same time, maintain the hard rocking edge the band had back in on Phenomenon. As such, this is one of their strongest albums. Also not to be overlooked are the keyboard skills of Danny Peyronel, who only played on this album. Let's take a look at the tracklist to Schenker's third album with the band, and see how it fares!

-SIDE A-

-Natural Thing: Once again, UFO starts out an album excellently. This straight-up classic hard rocker became a huge hit for the group, and it isn't hard to see why once you give it a listen. This tune rocks with the best of them. Quite honestly, I don't think the band could have began the album in better form than this.

-I'm A Loser: Here we have another UFO song that became very popular. This is a slow-paced rocker, a borderline rocker/ballad of sorts, dealing with the hardships of life. The combination of melodic and hard rock elements, along with a story people can easily relate to, makes for one of the band's quintessential classics.

-Can You Roll Her: UFO is one of those bands that has a lot of underrated masterpieces, and this is one of the many. Essentially, this is a straight-up, hard and heavy rocker. The band uses some backing keyboards, which easily shows the underrated musical talents of Danny Peyronel. One of my all time favorite songs the band ever recorded. DO NOT overlook this one, people!

-Belladonna: Here's one of those classic UFO rock ballads the band knew how to do so well, but never got the proper credit for. One listen to this song, shows just how well the band was able to create ballads, with a musical sound all their own. Definitely another underrated gem that shouldn't be overlooked!

-Reasons Love: Is it straight-up hard rock that you desire? Is that why you listen to UFO? If it is, this is the song for you! This one rocks HARD from start to finish. Michael Schenker serves up some of his best damn riffs ever recorded, and the rest of the band also shines in their respective roles. This album has a lot of underrated masterpieces, as you've likely already noticed, and this is one of them.

-SIDE B-

-Highway Lady: This song was a minor hit for the group. I wish it would have gained some more fame, but I'm not complaining - the song itself rules. It's a middle-of-the-road rocker, the happy medium between seventies hard rock and seventies pop rock, not at all unlike Shoot Shoot from the band's previous studio album, Force It. The keyboard/guitar combination works very well on this song. Another great song from the band.

-On With The Action: Here the band slows things down drastically, but the song doesn't rock any less hard than the band's rockers. Combine that hard rock sound with a bluesy one, and the result is a satisfying rock tune that you'd have to be a fool not to like. Not one of the best songs on the album, but still a damn good one.

-A Fool In Love: Vintage seventies classic rock. This song sounds like what a good deal of the other rock bands of the era was going for, and UFO's attempt at this style is musically excellent. If you're a fan of seventies rock in general, you're going to like this song.

-Martian Landscape: Although never a very big hit, this song has a special place in the hearts of die-hard UFO fans. It's a slow-paced heavily-acoustic number, with an excellent melodic styling. The fusion of these different musical elements makes for a very enjoyable listening experience. A solid way to close out a great album.

OVERALL:
Overall, Michael Schenker's third album with UFO is another excellent one. With the ability to combine straight-up hard rock and the ability to score big hits alike, the band was well on their way to the top. If you're new to UFO, the Michael Schenker albums are the best place to start your collection. Although the band's collaboration with Schenker only lasted a few years, there is no denying that the music created by the band in this period is nothing short of excellent, and difficult to top musically. Final verdict? This album is highly recommended!

EDITION NOTES:
Sadly, UFO albums are extremely difficult to find in America. Some of them (generally only the newest albums and the compilations) can be found in some American stores, but if you want the classic albums, expect to do a lot of hunting high and low. They are well worth buying, but more likely than not, you'll have to order than online due to their scarcity in the United States.
