I love the music on this disc.......2007-07-14
Les Paul and his wife Mary Ford are legends in jazz music. My favorite track on this disc is "I'm Sitting On The Top Of The World." Nobody could play the electric guitar as masterfully as Les Paul. Mary Paul's voice is so sensual on the track "I'm A Fool To Care." I love this track. "Tennessee Waltz" and "Vaya Con Dios" are classic romantic tunes. These tracks makes me think of someone special. "In The Mood" is another excellent song that puts me in a great mood. "Bye Bye Blues" is an uptempo track that stands out as one of the best here. "I Really Don't Want To Know" is a pretty song. I love the tenderness in Mary Ford's voice on this track. This disc is filled with great music.
nedenny.......2006-07-04
This must be one of the best CD's available letting new comers to LP&MF hear some of their best tracks from the 50's and they have not dated since then. Unfortunately CAPITAL in their wisdom have omitted others which should have been included. I can name but a few:- La Rossita - Mac the Knife - Three little words - Magic Melody - Hold me in your arms - Old Mexico - What is this thing called love - Walking & Whistling Blues - I'm Jealous - By the light of the Silvery Moon - Chicken Reel. and I'm sure there's more. So it looks like we'll have to wait till Les reaches his 100th Birthday before we see a Box Set.
I am tempted to wait - that's if I can manage to live as long as Les. He's doing great, and I hope he will still be playing when he reaches 100! Well done mate!
Must have.......2005-11-02
The recordings sound very modern. You can't tell this wasn't recorded yesterday; just listen to the samples. Les Paul had an inimitable guitar style. The man was the master, and teamed with the easy, lilting style of Mary Ford AKA (Iris) Colleen Summers (who started out in Western music), how could they not score? This music, while a product of its era, is timeless. This is perfection. This is the stuff dreams are made of. I usually review Classical music, but what can be more classic than this?
I only regret that a box set is not available, since I love everything that Les Paul and Mary Ford ever waxed. A particular favorite of mine that is missing is the Hawaiian love song, "The Moon of Manakoora". It is every bit as beautiful as the version recorded by Alfred Ahola Apaka, the crooning voice of Hawaii, and is recorded better. There are other notable omissions that I won't tire you with here, but this is the best set available until a box set is released. Absolutely wonderful music making. Curl up to the fire and warm with it; You'll love how it gets you in the mood.

Album Description
After 5 to 6 years on a recent worldwide Mountain tour, we were asked to record a new CD. During the touring Leslie heard Neil Young's rendition of Blowin in the Wind and decided to perform it acoustically at our shows. The reaction was clearly overwhelming leaving Les and I to a serious look, again, at the musical and political significance of Bob Dylan's repertoire. I personally felt that Leslie's vocal power would match the power in Dylan's lyrics. The melodies simple and direct would match Leslie's lyrical guitar expressions. The drum feels were spontaneous and most of the basic tracks were first takes in the studio. Personally, I just tried to punctuate the hell out of the song. It took about 3 years to contemplate exactly what Dylan material we would decide to record Mountain style. The final result is Mountain CD MASTERS OF WAR. Corky Laing
Customer Reviews:
Made for the money.......2007-08-01
This sounds like it was recorded in a single session. Leslie used to be a decent player. I guess that if you can't do your own songs, re-doing (poorly) songs from the Master is the only way to go. I hope Bob never has to listen to this garbage.
MOUNTAIN: Masters of thier Craft!.......2007-08-01
Mountain Is and always was Leslie West(gtr.), Corky Laing (Drms), and would be Felix Papalardi (bass) ,except for mystery shrouded circumstances involving his 83 murder, Ritchie Scarlett is very able in his bass chores. Mountain is not an oldies act, Mountain has always been a viable and powerful touring band and has had the occasional release be it the band moniker
or Leslie West name. An outstanding recent release (2002) would be Mystic Fire, but this is not an exception. So when I heard the Mountain was going to release a set of Bob Dylan interpretations, I was confident that it would prove to be a strong record. Mountain has not let me or any of their fans down with this new release, Masters of War. Fans of His Bobness will also be pleased with the power and versatility of the selections and performances included here.
Leslie West has a strong and powerful voice that only seems to get more intense with age, Corky always been the Canadian master of the large Kit, and Ritchie is an appropriate colleague on the deep end. This record includes two songs featuring long time Mountain fan/friend Warren Haynes, only adding to the magic contained within theses grooves. A complete unnecessary addition of Ozzy star power on the title track, shows that the trading of verses with Leslie is more of the Joke Ozzman than the Black Sabbath powerhouse of yore, and Leslie shines w/o the help of reality TV debasement.
Corky ups the ante with a neo-urban rap version of `Like a Rolling Stone', which features only him accompanied only by counter rhythm minimalistic drums.
A separate heavy and then light version of `Blowing in the Wind' serves to underscore the versatility of this set.
Other selections include a molten version of `Gotta Serve Somebody' and `Seven Days', songs not usually included in Dylan tribute packages. This record is a tangible slab of Rock Rage and Sensitivity. This collection is a MUST HAVE for YOUR collection. Mountain Lives!...Mountain Rules!

Well who would have guessed.......2007-07-31
Upfront I'm a big fan of Leslie + Corky. I'm a guitarist who plays a Hamer P90 special (can you say Les Paul Jr.) and a Stienberger through a Marshall stack... wonder who I sound like?
I've listened through the album three times. It is a superb recording. Every note from every instrument is audible and correctly balanced. Mr. Laings take of Like a Rolling Stone (vocals and drums only) is fantastic and very much caught my notice. Leslie's accoustic playing should be featured more often - his note selection is excellent - the man is a far better musician than he gets credit for. Ozzie's contribution did nothing for me but it is short and he only appears once. Warren H. contribution isn't anything Leslie couldn't have done on his own - not bad but at the same time not remarkable. Mr. Aronsons contribution on the bass is very good as is Mr. Scarlets. This is a good album but be forewarned it is not Mountain of the climbing era and it isn't a bootleg - this is the real deal by some serious folks and well worth a purchase.

A talented musician, amazing inventor and a lovely man!!!.......2007-07-30
I LOVE Les Paul! My parents danced to Les Paul music in 1946. I've always listened to his music while still living with my parents in the 70s. He has this amazing guitar sound but I didn't realize till this year when my son wrote a report about him that he invented the electric guitar and is also responsible for the "reverve", or over-dubbing technique all musicians use today! He is now 92 and still performs at the Iridium in New York City[..]. This CD is representative of his wonderful music and fine guitar playing. But to see his superb musicianship, catch him in person. This legend is my hero.
A must have for Les Paul enthusiasts.......2007-05-10
I suppose I am fortunate enough to have seen Les Paul live at the Iridium Jazz Club on Broadway in NYC on April 30, 2007 and aquire this CD and then have the cover autographed by Les Paul himself. His contribution as an inventor, innovator, musician and most importanlty a wholesome person is what makes his existance so very impacive to the music world.
This best of CD in my opinion is just a a sample of the rest of his best of material. Yes, this is a must have, but there is so much more out there of Les as well as it's hard to capture the man and his music in such a small sampling. Take for instance his work with Bing Crosby and other legends such as Chet Atkins who Les and Chey put out a Grammy winning album in one take (yes, one take - Amazing!).
I also suggest reading about the impact Les has had on many of the greatest musicians to play the guitar, including many of those not featured on thi CD such as Jimmy Page and others.
If you can ever make the trip to the Iridium, I highly recommend it. Les is getting any younger, and I am glad I had the chance t see this living legend play while he still is able to do so. Les is a class act and a gem to listen to.
A talent ready to explode.......2007-04-23
Before Les Paul landed at Capitol Records in the 50's, he recorded these sides as a small combo leader and sideman for Decca. I had never heard any of these before. Early recordings are often the most revealing. Finding these is a wonderful surprise!
There is nothing slick or contrived here. Just Les' wonderful talent in a very satisfying context. This cd showcases young Les Paul on the launching pad ready to take off on his amazing and influential career.
This cd will remain in my changer in heavy rotation.
A throwaway.......2002-08-31
A few weeks ago I heard a wonderful performance by Les Paul and Marian McPartland on her Public Radio jazz program, and I promptly ordered this CD. Much to my disappointment, it finally arrived. I found it to be, at best, soporific. I'll probably give it to my father-in-law, who may find an appreciative space for it on the shelf next to Lawrence Welk.
Five stars for music...one star for length.......2002-06-08
I see that the other reviewers are rating this CD on the basis of the wonderful music on it. I agree completely that it is nearly magical. However, one really wonders, could they only find 33 minutes worth of material to include on a "Best Of" for one of the most important and innovative American musicians ever? I think it is absolutely insulting to Les. His accomplishments could easily (and probably have) fill a boxed set. However, try to not let it bother you that you have been [messed over] by Decca/MCA and just enjoy the music. It is truely majestic.

What can you say, really? When you get right down to it, it's the greatest band in the history of pop music, the most influential, the best writers, and whatever other superlatives you can think of. Given their phenomenal output, and their huge chart success, it's no surprise that this second volume proves every bit as rich as the first. John, Paul, George, and Ringo had that rare chemistry that moved musical mountains, with more great songs than many people have had hot dinners, and they're still affecting the course of popular music. Thirty years later, all the paths they hinted at have yet to be explored, which is about as high a testament as can be given. --Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
beatles - rarities.......2007-07-18
I bought this CD because it contains some Beatles tunes that are lesser known like Rain, Inner Light, You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) and some different versions like Across the Universe. Rain is one of my favorite Beatles tunes. There was a record called Beatles RARITIES that came out in the late 70's or early 80's that had some of these songs.
Past masters.......2007-06-27
I bought this for one song, "Rain," which is not available on any other U-S release, at least to my knowledge. It's simply the best drumming by Ringo Starr!
The Inner Light.......2007-04-30
Most of the songs on this disc have always been available on LP. But this disc contains two songs that were never on any LP. You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) is an interesting novelty piece, but basically a throw-away. The Inner Light, on the other hand, is a great Harrison song.
The Inner Light is the main reason to buy this disc.
Also, if you feel that it is essential to have cd versions of great Beatles songs like Hey Jude and Rain, this is a good disc to have.
My disc is broken. It won't play Hey Jude. So I have to take away one star in my rating. Otherwise, this is a five star disc. I don't blame The Beatles for my defective cd, but my rating system is tough. I don't give five stars easily.

The Ultimate Beatles Sampler! .......2007-03-05
If I had to pick my single favorite Beatles compilation album, it would not be 1, the Red or Blue albums, or any of the other sliced-and-diced Beatles packages of the last thirty years; it would be this odd-ball compilation.
Every song on this disc is a pure pleasure to listen to, and the scope and artistry of these pieces are amazing! The way the Beatles mined such divers sources as pop, folk, jazz, metal, traditional Indian, gospel, blues, acid-rock, classical and comedy is utterly mind-boggling! I can't see how you could possibly be disappointed with this.

Although they were probably the band that most transformed rock from a singles medium to an album-oriented form, the Beatles also released many singles and EP tracks that never made it onto albums. In the U.S., Capitol turned the group's early LPs, through Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, into compilations, more or less, throwing the hit singles onto the vinyl to augment the album tracks. When the label later released the U.K. albums on CD, it posed a problem: What to do with the non-LP singles? Past Masters, Volume 1 compiles 18 of those singles, including some of their best-known tracks, running from "Love Me Do," "She Love You," "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and "This Boy" to "I Feel Fine" and Paul's homage to Little Richard, "I'm Down." Essential stuff. --Bill Holdship

A must have!.......2007-02-21
It brings back so many memories! It is great to have all of these songs in one collection. I recommend it to any Beatle lover.
Like the 2nd, an essential.......2007-02-09
Some of the Beatles' best cuts were regulated to non-LP b-sides (or at least are now ever since the US albums were dropped from the market in favor of the UK ones), and the best of those (other than Rain and Revolution, found on Volume 2) can be found here: This Boy is a superb, R&B-laced original; She's a Woman, a brilliant rockabilly/Elvis throwback (later covered quite nicely by Jeff Beck); I'm Down is relentless rock 'n' roll. You also get a straight reissue of the Long Tall Sally EP: Long Tall Sally itself and I Call Your Name are two bare essentials, both charged-up, three-chord rock with Lennon's powerful vocals. The other two tracks from that EP (Slow Down, with an interesting guitar solo; Matchbox) are nothing special but coulda been worse. Then there are the classic #1's from the early days that didn't make it onto an LP: From Me to You; She Loves You; I Want to Hold Your Hand and I Feel Fine are presented in their original versions here, while Love Me Do is an alternate version with Ringo (rather than a session drummer) drumming, though it isn't much different than the original, that's no real reason to complain. Bad Boy is an awesome rocker (from the US-only Beatles VI, which doesn't exist on CD unless you shell out $60 for The Capitol Albums, Volume 2) that didn't deserve to disappear. The German-language versions of She Loves You and I Want to Hold Your Hand may seem like padding, but they're fun and interesting, though certainly not perfect or the originals: the only song that doesn't do the job for me is Yes It Is, one of their weakest.
The only way to get several of these tracks other than buying this is through The Capitol Albums boxed sets. So if you don't feel like spending $60 or more, go here for some great rare Beatles!
Why don't the Rolling Stones or the Who have collections like these? Both bands recorded some quality single-only material that is now fairly hard to find, except through greatest-hits albums.
Fills in the void created when these singles were omitted from the original LPs.......2007-01-21
It's well-known that The Beatles ruled the charts for the majority of the 60s and the record company knew the value of their prizes when they released songs as singles (never putting them on LPs), split albums into EPs and releasing different versions of the same album (as was the case with "Revolver," and the beginning of the song "Help!" among many examples).
The two "Past Masters" CDs, to me, fill the void one might feel was created by the omission of the singles from the LPs. The fact that singles such as "Love Me Do," "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," and "She Loves You" were omitted from LPs in the first place seems a bit weird to me - someone born after The Beatles long split up (at least on paper, anyway).
But just thinking about John and Paul cranking out more timeless and poignant songs (separately and together) as opposed to insisting the singles be put on the albums attests to the fact that they are the greatest songwriters of the modern era of music.
Both "Past Masters" are essentials to a Beatles collection. - Donna Di Giacomo
There are better and more interesting samplings.......2006-12-09
These tracks appear to be the A and B sides of 45 rpm and some 33 1/3 rpm LP records that I have tucked away in my closet. Volume One is a very good cross section of The Beatles hits early in their career, along with songs that are (were) rarely heard on the radio, particularly Matchbox (sung by Ringo) which was originally recorded by Carl Perkins, a country rock-a-billy or country rock artist. Yes It Is, is a soulful love song sung (and probably written) by John Lennon. Unique to The Beatles are their early appearances in a night club in Hamburg, Germany thus the two tracks sung in German. What you hear and hopefully enjoy while listening to this CD, is the energy, warmth, passion and diversity that John, George, Paul and Ringo put into each song. There are better, less well known, cuts that show a greater diversity of the Fab Four. But Volume One is a good place to start for a neophyte "The Beatles" fan.

Long ago in californialand, i heard the last everly brothers "hit", on the wings of a nightingale, 1 time and i knew I HAD to have it. Took me about 20 years to find it, in this album. If you really like good music, with tight harmonies, good guitar work, words you can understand, a little bit of country and early rock to the still bitchin, fresh, updated sound of nightingale, then STOP RIGHT HERE and get this album. Enough said!
Everly Brothers, best of.......2007-01-09
The Millennium collection seems to have the songs I always want from a group or artist. The quality of the sound is there everytime. As the local music stores disappear it is good to be able to trust a system like this as I replace much of my vinyl for a CD collection. This CD gives me what I want for the Everly Brothers in one purchase.
The Best.......2004-04-01
Any fan who appreciates the Everly Brothers has to have
this album. The remastered sound is superb of course, but
the deciding factor on this one should be the inclusion
of their last hit, after more than 20 years had passed since
their previous one.
After the team reunited, one of their biggest fans wrote
a song especially for them. Paul McCartney wrote "Wings of
a Nightingale" for them, and it is a truly beautiful song
that displays their harmony at its best, and the song is
not usually found on other collections.
Get the best of all their classic early hits, plus this
last hit.
A must have for any fan.

Contemporary metal doesn't get much better or blistering than Lamb of God, something the quintet proves track-by-track on this latest offering. Armed with a bevy of furious riffs and perhaps even more furious vocals, the group tears through tracks such as "Walk with Me in Hell" and "Foot to the Throat" with a ferocity too-little-heard among the sea of bands that the group has inspired in its still-young career. Detractors will be tempted to fault the band for its lack of subtlety, but they're clearly missing the point. There are but a handful of young heavy bands worthy of carrying the proud torch of metal in this decade, and Lamb of God--along with The Esoteric and Totimoshi--is one of them. Just take a listen to "Again We Rise," "Requiem," or "Pathetic" and see if you don't agree. --Jedd Beaudoin

F*ck yeah.......2007-07-25
If you are giving this album a bad review, it is either because u havent listened to the album enough times, or u simply do not have a high enough musical understanding to appreciate it. This album is very solid, dynamic and emotional. It is an excellent follow up to ashes of the wake, it is a new direction for lamb of god, but it works so very well. Lamb of God is making some of the best metal out there these days, I would rate them as definately top 3 modern metal bands. Some of the best drumming in recent years. All members of the band were able to showcase their talents while not individually taking over the album, and overall, just great f*ucking metal. Lamb of God is a true band, they are not selling out and will not. How could they with Randy at vocs? Hes dark, angry and hes a crazy mother f*cker.
Awesome CD.......2007-06-22

READ MY REVIEW!! (If you haven't heard it yet).......2007-05-22
This album is better than ever from "Ashes Of The Wake"! Their last album was more angry and sounds more pissed, but this album sounds darker and kick a** guitar solos! "Beating On Death's Door" was a really groovy sound, "Blacken The Cursed Sun" had a groovy part at the beginning too. "Walk With Me In Hell" had really catchy guitars and great song to start off the album! "Pathetic" and "Again We Rise" are the best tracks in this album!!! Randy is using his high-pitch screeches more than ever! So what parts of Randy's vocals sounds like Metallica, it's groovy as hell! Randy's vocals in the beginning of "More Time To Kill" was great! And good drumming in the beginning of "Forgotten (Lost Angles)"! GET THIS!!!!!!!!
Glorious!.......2007-05-17
Easily one of the best metal albums out there. I normally don't like to buy new releases when I get into a band, but I started from the top and went back on this one. Never had I been so excited to get a new CD. All members of Lamb of God, shine here. Mark and Willie melt your face with devasting, though melodic riffs. John supports on Bass very nicely and gives it the punch the music needs. Randy and Chris are right on as always, and both have come along very nicely. The album still finds it's way to the top of my MP3 player all the time. Cheers!
A More Experimental Lamb Of God.......2007-05-15
I have been a big metal fan for years, and I am a big fan of Lamb Of God; to me, they have taken the classic Slayer aggressive riffing formula and taken it to the next level. When I want heavy riffs, sometimes nothing scratches that itch quite like LOG. On "New American Gospel", they wrote dense, chaotic and intense metal that really hooked me....they refined that and added more progressive elements and structure on "As The Palaces Burn", and perfected their style, in my opinion, with "Ashes Of The Wake". I always look forward to a new LOG release, as each is slightly different from the last yet still firmly within the metal idiom, and heavy as hell.
"Sacrament" sees them experimenting and pushing themselves artistically; there are more atmospheric textural sections and a new reliance on full backing vocals from the band members, as well as a lot of experimentation with vocal style. Very cool, and certainly one of the best metal albums (yet again) in recent years. After listening to it quite a bit though, I have come to the conclusion that the production is a bit muddy, and nowhere near the almost perfect, crystal clear production on their last release, "Ashes Of The Wake"....I also think that occasionally their ideas don't really work as well as they have on previous releases...."Pathetic" is just OK, although the CD is worth buying just for the track "Requiem" alone, which is quite the rollercoaster ride of sick riffage. I can't wait to see what these guys do with their sound next. Keep it up...

The Best of Leslie Gore.......2007-07-23
Now this disc really takes this Baby Boomer back to the days when she was a major star. The music is still fun tro hear and to sing along with. This is the type music that grandparents should let their grand kids listen to once in a while compared to this Hip Hop whatever .

Leslie Gore: The Best of Lesley Gore.......2007-05-21
Best memories in this one. Johnny's Girl loves Leslie's music....how can she not? The Best! And California Nights tops it off.
Wonderful.......2007-05-15
Many years ago, I would have never even considered purchasing this collection, but a broadening of musical horizons can be a good thing. Not sure what's going on but lately the 50's and 60's, plus every pioneering band or artist in many genres of music I have been seeking out.
Everyone knows "It's My Party", but it was a couple songs "I Don't Wanna Be A Loser", and "Judy's Turn To Cry", and then one day I heard "You Don't Own Me" on the radio and that was all it took for me seek out this best of set from Gore; and really I believe I like or love every song on here. I guess it's her vocal delivery, her voice is fine, but it's just the style...it almost fits into an early alternative perhaps vibe that struck me, like something fresh even in the years 2006 and 07 since I first starting to really listen to her music. To be honest I'm pretty much fed up with todays female pop and/or top 40....nothing really grabs me other than a handful like KT Tunstall, Amy Winehouse, Beth Hart, Alanis Morissette, Aimee Mann to name a few. I'm a fan of Liz Phair, and of course some old school like Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Suzi Quatro also, so female singers and musicians is a big musical interest also of course.
That Lesley was so young when she made these records is indeed a major factor, and her views seem cut right from todays world, these songs seem written especially for her, and she does make them her own even there were the songwriting teams even back then even, that was probably the thing that spoiled it a bit for me, but Lesley was something like 16 or 17 years old around the time of these recordings I think and it's classic stuff from the 60's, and I just can't get enough so I'll take it over many of todays acts. Do yourself a favor and check her out, and hear some influential music from a different and sometimes not so different era, I did and really I'm glad I did.
Everything on here is amazing I think, not a subpar track to be found, all major hits for her, perfect if you want her chart toppers only, if you are brave I guess you could get an expanded version of her greatest all time minor hits also on another CD, but for my money this is all I need. 3 or 4 years ago I only new one song by her, and now I have 9 or 10 other favorites!
Splendid!.......2007-03-29
Lesley Gore had the ability to hit every note and make us long for her insight into love's complexity. All are worthwhile, but "Look of Love" is the cream of the crop "Here I stand, all by myself, watching him with someone else - bet he doesn't even know I'm here - wish I could hold back my tears ..." is right on target. The Phil Spector-like arrangement is over the top and adds to this superior song. But really, "She's a Fool" and "Maybe I Know" are classics in their own right - well sung, well phrased and, well, just perfect. This is a must-have for anyone longing for the days where the most thorny problem we faced was "who should I take to the sock hop."
Not just bubblegum!.......2007-03-10
The songs & the performer are from "my" era. I liked the music then & several of the songs have very well stood the test of time. All of them bring back great memories. You Don't Own Me could be considered an anthem by all of us girls of the '60s who were discovering that our mothers' lives didn't necessarily have to be patterns for the lives we were going to forge. A great walk down memory lane & my grown kids enjoy the music too: they grew up hearing it in our house.

Connie Francis Millennium Collection.......2007-05-29
This CD is Great!!! I forgot what a great singer Connie was and still is. It's wonderful to hear some of her all time hits like Stupid Cupid, Who's Sorry Now, etc. Takes me back to my high school days.
Oooh, my happiness !!!.......2007-03-09
Connie Francis possessed a wonderful voice when she was in her prime in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Her rich, warm and vibrant voice attracted much deserved attention wherever and whenever she performed. Connie performed later on in her life but the songs on this CD do indeed represent her very best work.
The CD starts off with one of Connie's signature songs entitled "Who's Sorry Now?" Connie breathes new life into this much older song; and her voice charms you as Connie expresses every little nuance in all the lyrics to this song. The musical arrangement reflects forethought; the chorus in the background adds a certain type of poignancy to this ballad. "Stupid Cupid," a song with a much more lighthearted set of lyrics, follows this. The melody is catchy and the arrangement again makes use of a chorus to enhance the beauty of the song. Connie sings this to perfection!
Other great ballads on this CD include "My Happiness" conducted by the very talented David Rose; the strings on this number complement the beauty of Connie's voice brilliantly. No wonder all of the songs on this track set charted very high! "Lipstick On Your Collar" boasts a somewhat happy, silly melody that belies the sadness Connie expresses as she sings of her man who cheated on her. "Among My Souvenirs" features Connie and the musicians in total harmony--fantastic! "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" deals with unrequited love; and "Where The Boys Are" explores Connie's desire to find her one true love.
"Mama" sports a beautiful musical intro; and Connie sings so sensitively about her late mother that you will invariably begin to think of your own mother. Many people will relate to this song; and the lyrics that are in Italian infuse this ballad with a bittersweet sentimentality that one rarely finds in even the greatest of ballads. Connie's voice is in perfect form; and the strings on this number add a certain dramatic effect that make you miss your own mother regardless of whether she is living apart from you or she has passed.
The CD ends very strong with the exceptionally upbeat "Vacation." I like how the remastering kept the slight echo effect of Connie's voice as she gleefully expresses the excitement of being young and free from school "under summer stars." This song packs such a wallop that you want to jump up and dance for joy just listening to it! The melody is so catchy that it is positively infectious; you won't forget this number anytime soon!
The liner notes have wonderful color photos of Connie and you also get an essay about Connie written by Joseph F. Laredo.
Connie Francis dominated the charts for several years in the late 1950s and early 1960s--and for good reason, too. Hers was a young, fresh voice that expressed so many emotions precisely the way people experienced them in real life. People could relate to Connie for her energy as well as the topics of which she sang.
I highly recommend this CD for fans of Connie Francis and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will treasure this CD, too.
The Best of Connie Francis.......2007-01-13
I enjoyed listening to the CD very much. I enjoy 'oldies' music but I just wish that for a millennium collection there would have been more selections on this CD. Still, I'm very glad that I purchased it.
HO HUM.......2006-05-20
Americans only seem to remember Connie for her many hits which was not her best material. It made her famous and rich and sent her career sailing farther than any other female singer. But the great Connie Francis can be found in her later work Try "Standards", the 3 South Africian collections (hard to get). You'll hear the REAL Connie. I am glad people are still buying her records, even if it is the oft time released hit collections, but she deserves better and should be acknowledged as the fine song stylist that she still is...as she currently tours and the audiences love her. Bravo Connie. You are one of the very few fine singers left that can still carry a tune. And boy can you carry it! WOW!
Saint Francis........2005-11-15
Connie Francis was the Maria Callas of Pop music. Her incredible popularity in the 1950's and early 1960's was unmatched.... she was the girl every father wanted for a daughter and every boy wanted for his girl. Her singular, sing-songy, heartbreaking voice was very similar to that of the great Patsy Cline's, partly in fact that not only did they both have that little "cry" in their voice, that almost no one can do successfully, but also in that they could take pretty much any material, no matter how minor, and make it good, sometimes great. But fame and popularity are usually followed by heartache, and Connie Francis' career was no exception. It was dominated and controlled, we later learned, by her domineering and controlling father, who made her every career decision, based on what he and the industry perceived to be her good-girl image. He famously kept a hawk-like watch on his precious commodity/daughter, including destroying the relationship with the person that she always referred to as the love of her life, Bobby Darin. Her career waned in the 1960's, due mostly to changing musical tastes, but she had forever carved out a solid niche as one of the most popular girl singers of the 20th century. She continued to perform in public, mostly in smaller venues. It was while appearing in such a place, in Westbury, New York, that the now famous, very violent sexual assault occurred , forever changing her life.
The great career, and, apparently, the great voice had ended. Bad marriages and bad business decisions followed, along with family tragedies. She retreated from public life, save for the occasional tabloid intrusion. Further publicity surrounded not only her lawsuit against The Westbury, where her assault occurred, but that the trauma of that event had caused her to permanently lose her voice. Her behavior was reported to be increasingly erratic. She further withdrew. She did not reappear for years, until she authored her auto-biography, where many of the facts from her pained past came to light. Anyone who saw her comeback on Dick Clark's show around this same period will never forget it. This girl that was so loved by so many had her voice back, and the audience reaction and the tears in Dick Clark's eyes were a natural, spontaneous, honest reaction to a totally unstaged, rare outpouring of genuine affection, that had more to do with sincere appreciation than in maybe the perfection or imperfection of her voice. About 10 years or so ago, a group of my friends and I saw that she was appearing in Ft.Lauderdale, so we thought we'd have a laugh and go see her, it'd be fun in a campy kind of way....very "Where The Boys Are." Well, any preconceived thoughts about the reasons why we were attending quickly gave way to awe at the way this lady had this audience in the palm of her hand from the moment she swept onstage. It wasn't a performance...she was there amongst friends that she knew loved and admired her. When she introduced her mother to the audience from the front row, then proceeded to sing one of her greatest hits, "Mama", directly to her in a voice that reached the heavens, well....there was not a closed jaw nor dry eye in the house, and the standing ovation that sprung up on the last incredible notes was only a reflex to true greatness. I have had very few moments like this in live performing, and I've seen alot of them. This is the kind of reaction and loyalty Connie Francis elicits, due not only in that she represents nostalgia for an increasingly bygone time and innocence, but that her natural talent and beautiful voice brought joy to so many, from grandmothers to teens to the troups in VietNam. This 20th Century Masters Collection is a good place not only to reacquaint yourself to the voice and songs that will undoubtedly bring a big smile to your face and a tear to your eye, but also for those not acquainted with this voice that was such a big part of Pop music , and allows her to remain one of the biggest selling female artists of all time. Though Connie Francis leads a very private life, and has been out of the spotlight for many years, her inherent dignity and musical legacy will always insure a big spot in the hearts of those millions that her music touched. God Bless you Dear Lady, and thanks for all the joy.

Rare Earth Takes Me Back..........2007-03-13
I just heard the 20-plus minute version of 'Get Ready' for the 1st time in over 20 years, on XM radio (the Boneyard) and it brought back memories of that time, growing up in S.F. We used to try to dance to the entire song,(hard to at times because of the changes in tempo)and falling down from side-aches and laughing too much. The whole cd is some of the best music of its' time. I just went out and bought it! Happy Memories.....
A MUST BUY CD.......2007-01-12
this collection of their hits are excellent in quality and sound and also in variety. i was always looking for the long versions of GET READY, I KNOW I'M LOSING YOU, AND MA. this cd has it all. very well satisfied with my cd.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE CD's.......2007-01-05
I grew up loving Rare Earth. Wish I could get a teeshirt. lol. I sing along in the car....especially loving Get Ready..but all the songs are fabulous. It's also one of my favorites to listen to when in a romantic setting. It revs me up. I have alot of wonderful memories listening to this one.
Rare Earth 20th Century Masters=Best Of Rare Earth.......2006-12-28
First Thing That Surprised Me About This CD Was The Quality Of The Sound! The Detail Was Great. I Am Surprised By The Quality Of The Masters Series, I Also Have Donna Summers Greatest Hits In This Series And It Is Also Very Well Done.
But Back To Rare Earth: Having, Get Ready and Ma on The Same CD Is Awesome. I have Not Heard Either Song For Some Time And It Was Really Great. I Have Ribbon/Planar Tweeters And The Guitar Solo From Get Ready Just Sizzles....AMAZING! Oh Yes! I Had To Adjust The Volume Slightly...Upwards That Is And Its OK To Adjust The Subwoofer Also. Good Party CD!!!
