The five-and-dime cover art suggests a cheapo indie, not the reincarnation of Ratt vocalist Stephen Pearcy. Never mind--this is superior arena rock featuring the yowling, Steve Tyler soundalike and a slew of impressive tunes. --Jeff Bateman

For their second full-length, the Montreal-based seven-or-eight-piece Arcade Fire show themselves capable of Big Rock, as original, and as potentially marquee-topping as TV on the Radio and Sigur Ros. Regardless, the intentional murkiness of these pleasantly anthemic New Wave dirges makes it sound as if the music has already reverberated through a crowded cement stadium. Named after cult author John Kennedy Toole's first novel, Neon Bible is smart and subtle enough to present itself as a personal discovery for every listener, every word to be pored over by fans (as with those of Tori Amos, Pavement, and Radiohead). Surely, lines like "The sound is not asleep/ It's moving under my feet" have already been scribbled onto the margins of countless textbooks. Such words are delivered with less intensity this time, but no less import. For vocal influences, lead singer Win Butler seems to have traded his '80s Bowie in for an '80s Springsteen, at least on the songs "Antichrist Television Blues" and "Windowsill" (though "Intervention" sounds an awful lot like '80s era Go-Betweens). The kitchen sink arrangements include the use of an Eastern European orchestra, pipe organ, hurdy gurdy, and a military choir. --Mike McGonigal
Album Description
The second album from Montreal's Arcade Fire exceeds all expectations. With string and orchestral arrangements by two of the band members, "Neon Bible" is full of both half-assed punk rock mistakes and meticulously orchestrated woodwinds. Processed strings and mandolin. Quiet rumbles and loud rumbles. But mostly just eleven songs that the band thinks are really good.
Customer Reviews:
Flat, mediocre indie rock.......2007-07-15
To put this review in perspective: I bought the Arcade Fire's debut album after hearing heaps of praises from David Bowie and many other famous musicians, but was underwhelmed by all but the opening track. This new album hasn't really done anything to change my opinion that they're no more than a "Bright Eyes-lite," even after half a dozen listens.
As even some of the positive reviews of this album have noted, the production is both bombastic and low-fi, and not in a good way. It has a loud, flat sound that gets repetitive and tiring to listen to after awhile. The extra instruments that the band plays on this album sound very clunky and overbearing, particularly the organ that makes a sudden appearance on "Intervention."
Some albums with bad productions are more than redeemed by the actual songs, but the vocals and lyrics here are equally clumsy and repetitive. Win Butler still sings like a limper version of Conor Oberst from Bright Eyes, but this time he's also attempting a Springsteen impersonation on several tracks. While it isn't quite as grating as the Killers' attempt to sound like Springsteen, it still comes across as incredibly affected. The lyrics look like an attempt to make a grand statement about religion, war, and modern life in general, but they read like teenage angst poetry.
The closing track, "My Body is a Cage," is the only one that really stands out of the din after several listens. It has a grand, epic, proggy sound and almost lives up to the hype that this band gets, but if you hear it and like it I'd recommend passing on this album and getting something A Tab in the Ocean by Nektar, whom the Arcade Fire bear a strong resemblance to here.
Disappointing follow-up.......2007-07-09
It's a good CD, but compared to Funeral, it's not great... I don't blame them, I was expecting the second coming of Christ since their last one was so great. Still a fan, though.
Sophomore Slump.......2007-07-06
I agree with the previous review that "No Cars Go", "Intervention", and MAYBE "Keep the Car Running" are the best songs on the album, but that is not saying much. The rest of the songs just drone on into oblivion. "Subtle" is certainly the word for the opener, "Black Mirror". It sets the tone for the entire album. Listening to Butler whine "Blaaack Mirrooor" and "I don't wanna do _____ no more" for 3 songs is not inspirational in the least. Where are the danceable, 50's diner style rhythms of "Funeral"? Why are the intricate string arrangements barely audible? The straight, endless 4/4 beats of this recording and buried strings are unacceptable, no matter how much they "planned it."
The more I listen to this album, the more I realize how good the Arcade Fire's first album was. I love Funeral, but it was the death of this band. And yes, that makes me want to cry. "I don't wanna listen to Arcade Fire no more."
average.......2007-07-05
I have to admit that it took me a while to warm up to Funeral, but I have grown to love it. I'm still waiting for that to happen with Neon Bible. Most of the songs seem pedestrian and repeated listening hasn't uncovered the "wow" factor that Funeral offers. I'm hoping that changes, but for now I can only say that Neon Bible is just okay.
Damn this is good! .......2007-07-05
I hadn't heard a lot of Arcade Fire before I got this CD but I'm definitely getting their other releases now. I think I like them so much because Win Butler sings a lot like Ian McCulloch from Echo and Bunnymen who I love. If you're that kind of thing, you'll like Neon Bible.

Album Description
Montreal's Arcade Fire brings a theatricality, an intensity, an insanity, and a penchant for amazing hooks to their debut full-length. You've never heard such energy, beauty, and emotion from such a young band. Fans of Neutral Milk Hotel, Broken Social Scene, and Roxy Music's first two albums will have a new favorite band.

God Bless Arcade Fire.......2007-07-04
Some people seem to be turned off in a big way by Win Butler's voice. Other bands around these days make me nauseous for the same reason even when their music is OK, the prime example being Modest Mouse, who I can't bloody tolerate for more than two seconds after "friends" insist on playing it. They, the Shins, and all the rest of their sorry bunch make up the new category of "Not-Rock". --Anyhow, for some reason it never occured to me that Butler's voice is in the same camp of the whiny/girly/limpwrist vocal style so sadly prevalent on the radio nowadays.
Therefore I write this simply to announce that Arcade Fire is the best band in the world right now and that's really all that needs to be said.
So *this* is what everyone's raving about?! .......2007-06-19
This is a simple case of an over-hyped record. It is not stunningly innovative or original, nor does it provide much in the way of emotional depth. It does possess some pretty cool qualities, but is also consistently hampered by numerous irksome ones.
The weakest link here is the singer. His voice sounds unattractive and annoyingly choked, like some spastic, sweaty adolescent who just got caught touching himself in the bathroom. He leaves me cold; I don't get any genuine feeling from him, just unintelligible energy. This unintelligibility, along with his irksome, affected warbly-ness, prevents him from conveying emotions with any real sincerity or depth.
The music fares better, but proves monotonous by the end. There are some genuinely nice moments, like the melodically pretty, low-key "Une Annee Sans Lumiere" (probably the best song), and the attractive, new wavey harmonic strumming in "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)." "Haiti" is also a nice song, if a bit too repetitive. "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)" sounded strangely familiar to me, and on the 2nd listen I realized that the chord progression totally cops the Pixies.
Many of the arrangements are quite nice, featuring strings, accordion, organ, and various forms of melodic percussion. At times it hints at the exotic or the baroque. But too often the band buries its best traits by devolving into pumping bombast. Rather than find a well-crafted resolution to a particular section or verse, they instead crank up the volume and start bashing away at some cliche arena-ready riff that could've been churned out by anyone with hands and a guitar.
So, while I've really tried to like his album, while I've tried hard to focus on the numerous good traits, the abundant negative aspects prove difficult to overlook (especially that singer's awful voice!). I can understand why this might appeal to a lot of people, but I fail to understand the "saviors of rock" tag the critics have bestowed on them.
Loved It.......2007-06-19
This is wonderful...If you have not heard it.. stop going without....
Necessary, uplifting, emotional, bombastic eulogy rock - I guess we'll just have to adjuuuuuuuust.......2007-05-23
This is a thoroughly unclassifiable album. It's a bombastic composition that REALLY REALLY works, and never FEELS like it's over the top, even though it really is over the top. It's TOTALLY over the top, and sometimes sounds like that the band members are singing and playing at the edge of their control, even though they're not. It's wild, unpredictable, and sometimes drifting over that cliff for a moment before wandering back...which simply adds to the experience.
How good is this album? When you're listening you wish it would never end, except that you NEED it to end so you can get off the roller coaster ride it takes you on, and get back to the real world.
Chamber music? Sing-along? A eulogy? Oooh-oooh-oooh's? Pounding drums?
Growling guitars & bass juxtaposed with violins and french horns that drift from beautiful harmony to uncomfortable discord and back again?
A night at the symphony? Rock anthems? An album about death that's not actually sad? Massive tempo changes? SCREAMED, not sung, lyrics, here and there? Lyrics that surprise you when you figure out the point? A lead singer who sounds like he might be on the verge of tears one minute and might end up smashing his mic stand through a bass drum the next???
Yes, all of the above.
Think, "what if the Beatles had put out Abbey Road as their first album?" (what if you set the bar so high you can't ever get there again?)
Does it rock? Yes, quite a bit.
Does it make you think? Yes, quite a bit.
Does it rip your heart out and stomp all over it, and then put it back while it's still beating? Yes, it does that too...all while you're stomping your foot or pounding the steering wheel. You get the feeling that with every listen, you'll pick up something new. This album is so sonically deep and sumptuous that it would be hard to not hear something new on each listen, unless of course you're just singing along with it, which you might very well be.
(and to think that everyone says that they're even better live)
The hallmark of a great album is that it gets better upon each listen. Give it FIVE spins. If you don't like it, just get rid of it because you'll never like it. If you like it, you'll probably love it.
If you can listen to Regine's impassioned and imperfect wails above the violins and horns during "In the Backseat," and not FEEL anything, forget it. Otherwise, enjoy.
Worth the Wait..........2007-05-16
This is a 2004 record that I got in early 2007 but it is still relevant today and will continue to remain relevant as long as people die! Yes, this is because "Funeral" is almost bound to make you cry and seems quite helpful in helping you get over a loved ones passing. It also features one of my new 'all time favourite' songs, the garguantan, "Wake Up". This album is for any true musick fan. It features now as one of my favourtie albums ever!

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-07-03
I actually purchased this cd after watching "Sunday Morning on CBS". The band I saw on the show was entertaining and eccletic. I found the cd to be filled with talent, but it lacked the interesting energy I anticipated.
Another Brilliant Album.......2007-06-08
Happy to say that Neon Bible is just as satisfying as Funeral. In other words, this will be the album of the year for most discerning rock fans.
It is unusual for a new band to follow up on such an excellent debut without the old sophomore dip.
Neon Bible lacks some of the intense moments of Funeral but makes this up in consistency.
Everyone us right about the silly packaging: flimsy, indulgent and wasteful - nothing like being irritated before you manage to get to the disk.
Arcade Fire-- the best of the best.......2007-05-29
Like the first Album, I had to listen to it a few times to really love it... then, it's gold.
Not like Funeral, but still Great!.......2007-05-26
Funeral was an excellent album so it took me a while to get into Neon Bible and really appreciate it. This album is just as good as the Funeral but for different reasons. The band has progressed it's sound and taken a positive step forward (not sticking to same formula).
The biggest difference bwtn both albums was the drums. The drums are hard, loud, intricate on the Funeral. On Neon Bible, they seem to be more in the background (maybe bc of the mixing) and seem to be more complementary rather than driving the songs' direction. Now it's the strings, brass, keys, guitars, singing that seem to guide the songs and take over the drums.
That said, this album is great. It took a few listens to appreciate it but this one is up there with Funeral.
An even more complex Arcade Fire.......2007-05-23
When buying this CD, I had my expectations. However, this album is fantastic. As all Arcade Fire songs, it takes a couple of listens to really appreciate it and once you're hooked, there is no turning back. As a die-hard Arcade Fire fan of the EP and Funeral, I hoped Neon Bible lived up to the hype. The truth is that upon the first track (Black Mirror) you can immediately notice the extinsive layers that the band has put into the album. Win Butler, the lead singer is pitch perfect and his lyrics are absolutely beautifully written. The album, granted, does not as much of an "indie appeal" as Funeral being that it's not all over the place, but yet is a must have album for music lovers everywhere. I am fortunate enough to have seen this band a couple of times live and the live versions of neon bible are identical to the album and just as complex. The new version of No Cars Go is amazing and Keep the Car Running, Intervention, (Antichrist Television Blues), and Window Sill, are all huge additions to the album. You may not find as down-right "ball busting" songs as Wake Up or Power Out, but you will find the same passion and even more terrific melodies in this one.

Arcade Fire fans are an enthusiastic bunch, and they've been hungry for more music from their favorite group. But be forewarned, this EP was actually recorded and released by the band independently in 2003. The EP is an interesting view into the development of these musicians; decidedly less experienced at that point, the band didn't have quite as much oomph as they do now. When you compare these tracks with their first single, "Rebellion (Lies)" from Funeral, you can immediately feel a difference in confidence, from vocals on through to orchestration. That said, there is still plenty for fans to enjoy on this EP; for starters, none of these seven songs show up on their full-length, so that gives Fire fans an extra half hour of music to enjoy. Secondly, husband and wife team Win Butler and Régine Chassagne's vocals and songwriting still shine, most especially on the standout "No Cars Go" and the beautifully fragile "Headlights Look Like Diamonds." Funeral remains the best introduction to Arcade Fire, but this CD is still a great glimpse of a band with a bright future ahead. --Denise Sheppard
Customer Reviews:
I'm probably just sentimental, but I love this.......2007-06-25
I found Arcade Fire a while back, and I've had this EP longer than the others I own.
I absolutely love this EP; it always puts me in an excellent mood.
The beginning..................2007-04-02
A re-released EP after their much acclaimed debut full-length album Funeral. Though not as dense and charged up as their full length debut, there were signs that the band would emerged as a class act in the future: No Cars Go (also in Neon Bible) and Headlights Look Like Diamonds are standout tracks.
Overall an enjoyable EP, though not in the league of Funeral.
But then, not many albums can even be compared to Funeral.
A Wonderful and Completely Overlooked Start.......2006-11-26
The Arcade Fire exploded in flame recently, with a quasi-hit with Rebellion/Lies and a critically hailed debut album. But what of their beginnings? Thankfully, the band took the time to have this re-released, and what a reissue it is!
While not quite in the league of Funeral, this is a melancholy, sweeping experimental record that has its ups-and-downs, but still ends in a great place. The obvious best in No Cars Go, but that's out of the question. Still, the other songs are more than competent, with beautiful lyrics and vocals that draw you in and trap you for the full time of this EP.
While not perfect, definetly a wonderful step foward for the sad, sad, sad rock music scene at current. With bands like My Chem. and Fall Out Boy having smashes with barely there records recorded simply for the cause of making money, a band who actually strives to make good music is becoming increasingly endangered. Odd how Canada would save America AGAIN.
Exceptional debut of an excellent band.......2006-10-01
Arcade Fire has become one of my favorite bands, and I still find lots of people who haven't heard of them. They have a very distinctive style and some of their best songs are able to touch a primitive chord in the soul and at the same time feel distinctively fresh and unprecedented.
This album may not be as good as Funeral, but it's much better than almost anything else out there in the alternative/pop/rock arena these days. Listening to this album now feels like catching Radiohead at the time of Pablo Honey or the Bends; or even like catching Echo and the Bunnymen way back when releasing Heaven up Here or Porcupines. Someone else said that this feels like a band learning their own sound, and I think that's right; but I think you might also say that the sound of this album is open, in the sense it could be taken in several directions and they chose a route that was perhaps less ethereal and light and more "meaty" and rhythmic and beat-driven than some of the songs on this album. I like the direction they chose, and love their subsequent album (and tracks); but sometimes listening to this album makes me wonder what kind of music might have emerged in some of the other directions suggested by this early album. Maybe some of that music can still happen. In any case, if you haven't heard them yet, it's time, whichever album you choose to begin with.

Even when this Minneapolis trio dabbled in familiar sounds, such as the strummed folk of "Never Talking to You Again" or the Bo Diddley-style R&B of "Hare Krsna," what came out on this swirling 1984 double album was clenched, emotional, and intense. Over 23 short songs that helped define the still-thriving punk subgenre known as hardcore, leaders Grant Hart and Bob Mould screamed their alienation in the fastest language they could possibly produce. Though Mould is the more personal songwriter, lashing out at liars and (presumably) lovers, both Hüsker heads come up with psycho-depression choruses like "What's going on inside my head?" --Steve Knopper
Amazon.com
They didn't yet have terms like "alternative rock" when Minneapolis's Husker Du made their mark as one of the 1980's most influential bands. With two skilled songwriters--guitarist Bob Mould and drummer Grant Hart--the genre-bending trio (bassist Greg Norton completed the lineup) juxtaposed hardcore punk speed and aggression with pop-leaning melodies. Add their uniformly thoughtful, introspective lyrics, and you've got this stunning 1984 double-length release, a semi-concept album about youthful rites of passage. It includes such memorable tracks as Mould's "Broken Home, Broken Heart" Hart's "Never Talking to You Again," and the evocative 14-minute instrumental closer, "Reocurring Dreams." --Billy Altman
Customer Reviews:
"I've made my world of happiness to combat your neglect.".......2007-06-13
1984 was a great year for punk, boasting such seminal releases as The Replacements' Let It Be, Black Flag's My War, the Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime and the Meat Puppet's Meat Puppets II. Yet the finest exponent of the year's riches, Hüsker Dü's Zen Arcade, was also its most contradistinctive.
The double L.P. format, the concept, the piano interludes, the dreamy fourteen-minute closer, all stood as the very antithesis of hardcore simplicity. The Minneapolis trio's refusal to adhere to rock/punk/hardcore ground rules is what made them so influential.
Recorded and mixed in one 85-hour stretch, all but two of Zen Arcade's twenty-three tracks ('Something I Learned Today' & 'Newest Industry') were first-take recordings. Whilst many tracks feature the Hüsker's signature whirlwind pace, they avoid hardcore cliché, leaning more toward local rivals The Replacements' LSD-infused rockist sound than Minor Threat's straight-edge punk.
The album's concept deals with its protagonist running away from home to escape his rowing parents ('Broken Home, Broken Heart') and deadbeat friends ('Never Talking to You Again'), only to be overwhelmed by the horrors of the outside world. Although something of an allegory for the lives of many hardcore kids, the most profound statement Zen Arcade makes is in its conclusion: there is none. The fact that it was all a nightmare offers the listener no resolution.
The album is often credited with ushering in a new era of 'post-punk' in American music, and due to its sheer scope, signalling the demise of the hardcore genre.
Troubled and Brilliant.......2007-06-05
In 1985 I was searching for something and Husker Du helped me find it. I was bored with cheesy metal bands and classic rock. Then I discovered college radio - what would later go by name, Alternative. College radio beat the hell out of Top 40 and Album rock of the day but still sometimes lacked the intensity I was seeking....until they played Husker Du! My first exposure to Husker Du was from Flip Your Wig and then later I purchased New Day Rising and Zen Arcade. I love all three but Zen Arcade has always been the most difficult for me to love. There is so much of everything that Husker Du was capable of that it sometimes seems cluttered with the unnecessary. The brilliance of the band and the strength of the songs overcomes any weaknesses. Zen Arcade has it all - acoustic guitars, mind tearing speed punk, a splash of piano, and several songs that are clearly the genesis of alternative and punk music to follow. Stand out tracks are Never Talking to You Again, the truly amazing I'll Never Forget You and of course the prophetic Newest Industry. Zen Arcade is the seeming troubled child of the pre-Warner releases. As such it requires more attention for it's genius to be appreciated but it is certainly there.
It's 1985, Summer Camp-and everything I ever knew about music was about to change..........2007-04-23
My friend Dan gave me a cassette of Zen Arcade. He told me: Listen to it a few times before you pass judgement...best advice ever...
I had no idea who the Du were...were they a bunch of Hare Krishnas? Were they some cult? What the hell was that sound the guitar was making-why was the drumming so fast and how in G-d's name could that bass line get any thumpier (is "thumpier" even a word?)
I was 16, a CIT at an arts camp in Connecticut and a NY City kid just gave me a tape that would change my life...
On the third listen I heard the melodies and lyrics through the wall of sound.
Sure I already loved the Beatles, Hendrix, basic punk (Buzzcocks, Sex Pistols) and New Wave including Bowie & the Cure...but this-oh man-this was so freakin' different.
Hearing the story line, the bouncing from ballad to hardcore at its purest-this album changed me. Soon every cent I had went to buying every cassette of Husker Du I could-and I was not disappointed.
I saw them that fall in 1985 and OH MAN-the stage at Irving Plaza in Manhattan was full of energy...a nearly introverted Mould turned into an extroverted Mould once the feedback was full-on; then came Norton jumping all over stage-he was crazier on stage than Townshend in his best of days-finally the long-haired hippy drummer Hart who alternated vocals with Mould and his bare feet pounding the hi-hat and bass drum at insane speeds...
I'd seem them that winter in 1986 and again a few times before the imploded in 1987...
I remember running to the store to get Candy Apple Grey the Tuesday it came out on Warner Bros. (My friend Ari, as a lark, even plagiarized the lyrics for "Too Far Down" for his creative writing class in 12th grade causing the teacher to speak to him after class to make sure "things were okay and that he wasn't going to do anything to himself..." but I digress).
Anyway-this album is even better than the hype.
Listen to it 3 times-the third time is really the charm...and you'll hear a masterpiece, a true diamond in the rough...a seminal album about a runaway and a band on a runaway train (okay so I saw Soul Asylum open for Husker Du-and also Dwight Yokum...)
Oh the songs----Pink Turns to Blue may be the best song of a hooker on junk ever written-and you just want to sing along...Dreams Recurring and Recurring Dreams-maybe the first and last punk jam-and highly listenable if you have the time...Something I Learned Today-gets the album started-and Never Talking to You Again---maybe an ode from Hart to Mould...ironically they played it on stage one last time in 2004...
Anyway-that's all for now-buy this album!!!!!
must-have punk rock classic........2007-03-05
first off, let's thank modern technology for this album. talented as these 3 young lads were, despite their vision, they could not have made this music with lutes and harpsichords. no sir. walls of beserk electric guitar were just the ticket to get their creativity across. a pure adrenaline rush assaults the listener, making one wonder "how much strong coffee were they drinking in the studio?" it actually took about 4 listens before the brilliance of this record sunk into my heart and skull, and i will insist that listening on headphones is the best way to experience this beast of a cd ( there are many nuances and subtleties within this onslaught of aggression and anger that are picked up easier through headphones. and bob mould's incredible guitar mayhem placed straight into your head is a blast!). a classic punk album. angst, alienation, cathartic wailing, all swirling within a rush of mighty sound. must-have music for all rock and roll collections.
Greatest Concept Album Ever Made.......2006-12-04
Punk music has become difficult to fully define. It's often labeled "fast" (think Dead Kennedy's "Buzz bomb"), loud (think Black Flag's "My War") and angry (again, "My War"), but these labels overlook the variety and depth of feeling many punk bands were capable of. Husker Du is no exception. Zen Arcade's "Pride" is the typical punk song but more like the first Monet; it is so purely punk that it is beautiful. They're actually throwing folding chairs in the recording room at the end of the song just to add to the chaos! Where "Pride" and "I'll Never Forget You" are your typical punk scorchers, the band takes punk in directions that deepen the expression.
First, Zen Arcade is a concept album. In sum, the story is about an unhappy teen who leaves home with a "Broken Home, Broken Heart", enjoys drugs on his "Chartered Trips" brushes against the "Hare Krishna" street religion, discovers himself sexually conflicted in a "Masochism World" then realizes that his dream of freedom and success may be in vain as he has to return home amidst the "Biggest Lie". The concept ends with the kid waking up at the end of the album by the "Tooth Fairy and Princess" realizing the entire experience was one of many "Reoccurring Dreams". Unlike the Beatle's Sergeant Pepper's, this concept album is strongly cohesive from start to finish yet still manages to avoid loosing it's musicality along the way as Pink Floyd's the Wall did.
I first heard the album in the late 80's and then, as now, was blown away by a few numbers on the albums. As far as generic punk goes, I think Pride and I Will Never Forget You are the genre's Shakespeare. They are bold, fast and scorching but most importantly, they're honest. They do not pose to be chaotic- they are chaotic, but somehow remaining fun and raw. I still can't get over the idea of chair throwing as a musical instrument. It seems more sincere and heartfelt than say Pete Townsend and his hordes of followers who've dashed a guitar in mock anger, or whatever it is they're dashing guitars for. Aside from these, other stand out songs include:
Hare Krishna. A little repetitive after a minute or so yet effective in blending an inane chant with western, punk-a-billy rock and guitar work that is what any guitar player can only hope to spit out- fast, berserk, original, simple and powerful.
Chartered Trips: Beautiful lyrics (as usual). Mould's voice seems like a child struggling to express the most important thing in his life as it nearly cracks. The guitar paints an even, up-beat canvas along steady, simple drums.
Where "Pride" scorches "Beyond the Threshold" tackles the frustration of small town isolationism and grinding routine perfectly.
There were only a handful of labels that supported punk acts, SST records being one of the biggest. Due to that, Husker Du were able to borrow one of the lead singers from Black Flag (Dez) to write one of the best party songs since "Six Pack". "What's Going On" captures the same football anthem, party feel but at the same time it is more philosophical. The singer recognizes, in his own confusion, that the problem isn't so much the outside world as his own perspective; a great "WTF am I doing?" song, like when you look for a leak in the roof and accidentally fall through the ceiling.
Masochism World- Mould's simple, repetitive guitar rhythms along with heavy echo vocal effects create a wall of sound that is beautifully punctuated with angelic female vocals in the center contrasting with his screaming. A true 'battel of the sexes' in punk duet form. Frank Black of the Pixies is often quoted for his ad he attracted Kim Deal by. I really think this song was what he had in mind when he wrote that ad. It just kicks.
The Tooth Fairy and the Princess- pure childlike psychedelic meets punk. Repetitive along the lines of Hare Krishna, but still beautiful and daring.
Dreams Reoccuring/Reoccuring Dreams: Two songs, the first which helps open this concept album and the later which closes with 14 minutes of instrumental work. The first (Dreams Reoccurring) splices a forward track with back masking of the same, providing a dream-like sense of misdirection, as if to suggest the main character is in a dream. The second is straight-forward power rock, with solos by everyone along a consistent, fast beat. Reoccurring Dreams is really the gutsiest piece on the album, or perhaps, of any album made in the last 20 years- but some might find it self-indulgent egotism. Here, Mould plays everything he feels and everyone backs him up as though they were a seasoned jazz trio. At one point he hits a note and allows the feedback to run for over a minute like an air raid siren. One minute of SOLID FEEDBACK! For guitarists, this is a dream. Metal heads will always have Van Halen's "Eruption", but true punks will always have Reoccurring Dreams.
What makes this album a treasure, along with all great albums, is that we get so much from the artist. While Husker Du may label it a concept album, it is very difficult to disassociate the main character with the band itself- thus within a single album they capture the full spectrum of teenage triumph, aspiration, dreams, remorse, regret, pain and beauty. True, they take two albums (23 songs) to do it, but again, it's one very cohesive work. If many bands owe a debt to Nirvana and Nirvana owes a debt to the Pixies, then even more owe a long unrecognized debt to Husker Du who put out a gutsy, beautiful statement that stands the test of time better than the punk labels they were tagged with.

Re-discovered lost gem.......2007-05-19
Pat Simmons released this album back in the early 80's and was pretty much forgotten about..until now. Amazingly, this music sounds refreshing nowadays. It has many different flavors of music on it, from the hard rocking "Out on the Streets" and "Knocking at Your Door" to the easy rock of "Dream About Me" "Don't Make Me Do It" and "Why You Givin' Up" to the jazzy "Sue Sad". The radio hit was the song "So Wrong". Pick this one up and enjoy.

Album Description
Imagine the Blank-wave Arcade--the color of night-time neon. Its' interior, an unlikely one night stand of high-tech and punk rock ethics. Lonely and desolate, its' supercollision pop rushes at you like images from a Berlin Blade Runner or Mad Max.
Their music, stark and uncompromising, is filled with electronic surges, darkwave brushstrokes, confessionals and come-ons. The Faint combine rock instruments (guitar, bass) with "now" electronic elements (synths, drum machines) to create melodic, melancholic post-modern music-- but not without hope. Their music is haunting, yet danceable--an aesthete's memory of tainted pop music. BAND_MEMBERS: Todd Baechle Jacob Thiele Clark Baechle Joel Petersen
Album Description
The Faint's second album (1999) Blank-Wave Arcade delivers more choppy new-wave rhythms, spiky guitars, and acidic, old-school synths, with a little punk-rock attitude thrown in for good measure. While the group has been compared to the usual suspects, like Gary Numan, Devo, and the Cure, there is also a strong resemblance to Blur's new wave/punk fusion. Saddle Creek.

CD Tastes Great!.......2006-03-10
I had my doubts when my friend first told me that this CD was not only a good listen but, after you saved it to your computer, the compact disk itself was quite tasty. I just assumed my friend, who worked for several years as a black market asbestos remover, was merely having another "glitch" in his thought pattern. Well, so there I was one lonely Friday night consuming copious amounts of adult beverages. My playlist was on random and, suddenly, "worked up so sexual" come resonating through my PC speakers. It was at this moment that my friend's words and unorthodox choice of adjective fired off in my head like an M80.
The next thing I knew, as if by primitive impulse, I was cranking the oven on and PAMing the cooking sheet. Now, this was my first time cooking a compact disk so I can't really tell you how such things are normally done but I can share my experience with you. Once the oven reached 450'F I inserted the CD (sans-case, of course) and let it marinate about 8 minutes or until the corners reached a golden brown. Towards the end, I threw in two English muffin halves and let them toast for about two minutes. Sandwich the disk between the English muffins, throw on a slice of cheese and you have yourself a nice breakfast snack. "Blank-wave Arcade" had a more meticulous, sophisticated taste to it. I compare it to a bold eggs Benedict.
I am not certain what factors determine a CD's taste (i.e. band, label, genre), however, I have recently purchased Wolf Parade's "Apologies to the Queen Mary" and I am thinking about trying it toasted with Maple syrup to bring out it's ethnic flavor. Look for that review in the near future.

80's British New Wave Meets Nebraskan Emo .......2005-12-03
What can I say...I am perhaps a bit biased being Nebraskan myself. I never really saw what the commotion was about with Bright Eyes, The Faint has far superior creativity and musicianship. But that's just my opinion. Blank Wave Arcade I wouldn't reccomend for new listeners, but it's an excellent album nonetheless. All the tracks you can hear the influences of The Cure, Duran Duran, OMD, and New Order; but Cars Pass In Cold Blood sounds like a Depeche Mode throwback (I bet Dave Gahan would have loved to have corroborated!) and it happens to be my favorite track on the album.
Danse Macabre is a superior album, and Wet from Birth is their most accessable to date, but that doesn't mean BWA should be overlooked. It has some of my favorite songs on it (can I say again Cars Pass In Cold Blood is my favorite song by The Faint?) and you'll definitly catching yourself singing "oh oh, oh oh o-ah o-ah" for hours straight after a good listen.
Black Wave Arcade - The Faint.......2005-08-31
I love this album. It's pretty short, but then what album by The Faint isn't? Electronic indie that you just want to dance to. It isn't as dark as the latest two albums but this isn't a bad thing. I just think it has some great tracks. They are good song writers too, verses and choruses never stay the same, they are always changed in some way.
God bless The Faint.......2005-01-09
This is my favorite release by The Faint. It's loaded with poppy synth beats and it makes you want to dance all night.
:).......2004-11-25
This is by far the best Faint release, ever. All the songs work together to bring a theme to the album.
Call Call is my favorite song on the CD, with Casual Sex coming in at a close second.
Sexual undertones fill this CD and the synths just make it all come together. Beautifully written.
BUY IT.

The five-and-dime cover art suggests a cheapo indie, not the reincarnation of Ratt vocalist Stephen Pearcy. Never mind--this is superior arena rock featuring the yowling, Steve Tyler soundalike and a slew of impressive tunes. --Jeff Bateman

pearcy at his best!!!!.......2007-07-15
an album lost in seattle music.that ratt sound all the way.stronger vocals than i thought pearcy had in him, even the slower ones.if you like ratt you will like this one.if you like ratt you HAVE to have this one.
Got it Back again.......2007-06-08
Had the casset tape and never could down load the alubm so finaly I bought it again the CD this time and burned it to my hard drive. Wish it would get the radio play like other stuff from that time but it doesn't.
Quite A Pleasant Surprise.......2007-04-21
It took me a few listens to actually catch on to this little gem
Being a huge Ratt fan back in the days of big hair,I had to buy this as soon as I saw it,since it's Stephen Pearcy singing and Fred from Cinderella on drums
I was expecting a mixture of Ratt and Cinderella and didn't find that at all,I was a bit disappointed so I sold my cassette copy, end of story, right? Nope,I found a few of the songs online and listened to them after many years since selling my cassette copy and I found myself kicking myself, this is darn good rock and roll
actually much more serious than Ratt or even Cinderella
the stuff is much more based in straight ahead in your face classic rock then glammed up catchy tunes
don't get me wrong, these songs will have you tapping your foot but it is a far cry from 'round and round'
this is much more similar to 'Little Caesar' or 'Badlands' or even 'Black Crowes' it's really great and I do highly recommend it
there are really no stand out single songs (except the amazing Cry No More' which is in my opinion up there with Stairway To HEaven (no I'm not kidding,it's very similar)
but the songs all flow nicely and it's a total rock experience
meant to be played loud and I think best suited for a long road trip, pop this in your CD player and crank it up
this is some fine and tasty rock and roll performed by seasoned veterans
led by the amazing vocal skills of Stephen Pearcy
the upside - great in your face rock and roll from start to finish,it definitely grows on you the more you listen...and 'Cry No More' is one of the best songs I've ever heard from anyone,period...well worth the price of admission alone
the downside - no great singles (except the one) and unless you listen to it over and over you will forget the songs pretty quickly but it's worth having for when you want great rock that you don't need to think too much about (but the last song 'mother blues' is not very good but the rest are great)
the bottom line - a great classic rock album start to finish, and worthy of anyone's CD collection...donutman says so!!!
Not Ratt but Just as good!.......2005-08-15
I wanted to take some time and listen to it a few times before writing a review. I wanted to be sure to get it right. I purchased this cd expecting to be mildly diappointed by it. I was very wrong. Although I found myself comparing it to Ratt because of the voice of Stephen Pearcy, I had to point out some differences. Any Ratt fan would love to have this one. "Nothin' to Lose" sounds like a typical Ratt song to me and I love it! However another favorite of mine is "Cry no more", a ballad!! "Mother Blues" is a acoustic and a little bluesy which is obvious from the title. In my opinion every song on this cd is well worth the listening. Hats off to a group who can make entertaining music without the use of four letter words. It's called talent. I can't stop listening to it. I'd highly reccomend this for any collection, especially for Ratt fans!!
Arcade, best left for Video Games.......2005-07-12
I've recently given this album another try, just to make sure that 12 years after its release it still sucked. Just to confirm, it does indeed suck, majorly. It's comparable to dental surgery, visits from your mother-in-law and hard punches to your testicles.
If you liked Ratt (which I most certainly do) you won't like Arcade. "Why?!?!?" you ask?
1. The music is like Ratt, only with the same singer and worse musicians, and the lead singer seems to be recovering from a massive hangover the afternoon they recorded the album
2. The songs must have all been leftover from 80s Ratt albums that "didn't make it" - and now we know why they didn't...
3. Sounds like Stephen Pearcy was at about 12 packs of cigarettes a day when they recorded this piece of crap
Overall Rating = 1 undeserved star. I would have given it a "zero" star rating, but that is not allowed on this site.
If you are thinking of purchasing this album - STOP RIGHT THERE! Save your money and go have yourself checked out for a brain misfunction. If you really want to hear an over-the-hill rocker singing songs about "all the chicks that got away" and "my hair stands up without spray", head to your local county fair - I'm sure there you'll find "Arcade" among the carnies and cow poop.

Album Description
Love Arcade is the brainchild of Christian, a 19-year old wunderkind who wrote, recorded, produced, played, and sang everything on his debut. He writes songs that manage to effortlessly channel the last two decades of pop - 80's radio pop and 90's guitar squalls - and morph it into instantly catchy two-minute sonic confections. Reminiscent of Cheap Trick and Weezer, the album is a potent reminder of everything currently missing in contemporary rock 'n' roll radio, including a sense of humor. Tour history includes dates with MCS, Straylight Run, Dropping Daylight, Yellowcard, Matchbook Romance, Hit The Lights, and more.
Customer Reviews:
This is really a great and impressive album.......2007-05-07
My friend had been singing Love Arcade's praises for WEEKS, before I finally decided to break down and buy their CD. I was completely thrilled to discover that it was completely worth the money, and they are now one of my favorite bands.
This CD is fun to listen to, sing along to, dance to, etc. It's this unique blend of rock, pop, and an innocent attempt at a little hip-hop. I am NOT a fan of rap at all, and this is nothing like rap, but the band is from Detroit, so they have this original approach to their music. To top it all off, the lead singer made the entire CD- IN HIS BASEMENT- and it sounds fantastic! If you're truly curious but overly-cautious, log on to MySpace and listen to the songs that they have posted on their page. I couldn't get them out of my head (or my CD player) for weeks.
I would also like to add that they are some of the NICEST guys that you will meet if you get the chance to meet them in person. For one thing, of course they should be because they're not so big that they can alienate their fans and still sell records, but you can tell that they understand the importance of a strong and loyal fan base, so they wouldn't be arrogant if they had the chance. They also don't make a habit of drinking- SMART CAREER MOVE! Buy the album if anything because they're a talented group of young guys who deserve some opportunities.

Love arcade is a revolutionary mix of different genres of music. I have to say i have a fancy for their music and it has a good sound. I listen to it pretty much everyday and from the first to last song you get addicted. this band is a band worth listening to and have the best tracks i've heard for a long time. These guys really did start a revolution and I can't wait to see what they pull out of there sleeve next.

5 Stars are not enough to rate "Love Arcade." I bought this CD a few months back and I was totally blown away! The music is a perfect blend of genres including rock, pop, hip-hop, r&b. The lyrics are very catchy and amazing. I caught one of their shows in the beginning of February in Dallas and their live performance is about as energetic as the record. I personally suggest everyone to get this CD. You will NOT be dissappointed with this band of talented young men who are totally reeking of awesomeness!!!
perfection........2007-02-28
This album is amazing all around, especially with tracks like Keep It Comin', Candy, and Can't Stop. Love Arcade's music is filled with many pop, rock, and hip-hop influences, which in my opinion, is the perfect mix. The mastermind behind Love Arcade, Snowhite, is one of the most talented young people I've ever seen. Love Arcade are also great live, and the sweetest guys I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. You'll be hearing much more of them in the coming months, no doubt about it.

Album Description
The String Quartet Tribute to Arcade Fire's Funeral is an instrumental voyage through the band's dreamy and startling landscapes. Violin leads the way, turning the band's plaintive, searching vocals into soaring melodies. Viola and cello go dark, but not too dark, as they give classical voice to Arcade Fire's sadder songs. But it's joy--the grab-the-sky, tell-the-world kind of joy--that wins out in the thrilling cadences of indie radio hits like "Power Out" and "Wake Up." The String Quartet Tribute to Arcade Fire's Funeral is smile-inducing, spirit-lifting music.
