The Best Album of Arch Enemy!.......2006-08-25
Wages of Sin...What to say about this melodic power/death masterpiece. We will start with Angela. With this album, AE bring a new vocalist to the frontlines. Angela dispells all concern of a female vocalist by dry-barking and growling throughout 100% of the album (no clean singing here). Now we come to the Amott brothers. I being a guitar player, know b.s. guitar work when I see it and let it be known that these two are some of the best lead players in all of metal! Almost anyone can play really fast scales with no feeling or personality (um...Zakk Wylde...), but the Amott brothers (Michael in specific) play the most emotional, techinical, and beautiful solos I've ever heard. I prefer their guitar work to that of Bodom and Dragonforce (although these are both great bands). Lastly, this album threw me from the world of korn, L.B., and Incubus into the awsome world of Soilwork, In Flames, and other great Swedish death metal bands. Even if you don't like metal, or growling vocals, buy this for the guitar work, which anyone who has ever picked up a guitar should enjoy!
YES!!!.......2006-05-28
I love Arch Enemy. This album is one of my favorite melodic death metal albums. Angela Gossow's vocals scare me but I want to learn to scream like that. I really love the Amott brother's guitar playing as well. Ravenous is one of the greatest songs ever. RAVENOUS FOR MORE METAL!!!
Amazing.......2006-03-30
I first heard of Arch Enemy wayyyyy back when N'Sync was still getting their underserved airplay. Problem is I could not get into this band because of the MONTONOUS Johan Liiva. God Damn he sounds the same in each song, its just wierd. It just never changed, but the guitar work was unparallel and never would be matched again.
Anyways I was sitting in English class watching this dumba** film and the lights were off so my friend put his earbud in my ear and immediately played a song. My first question was how did he know i liked death metal, but what played would be a journey to hell. A suddle keyboard drifted amidst space as a cringing noise grew in the backround, and suddenly a guitar punched me in the face while drum sticks were bashing my (ear)drum. I was just thinking holy s*** this is killer. 4 minutes later i quietly asked him while holding my ear in pain what was that song? He replied," It was Arch Enemy, straight outta hell with a new singer and improved sound" (he really didn't say that, but something close). I asked him the next second, "I wanna go back to hell."
Later back on the internet i listened to samples and loved what this CD had to offer. This couldn't be the same Arch Enemy that had that chunk of Liiva bred in them. Anyways i loved most of the tracks on this one and eventually a collecters version (aka this one) came out and it was filled with stuff from pre-Wages Of Sin. I have grown easier on Liiva's tireing moans, but still can't seem to fixiate myself towards it. Highly Highly reccommend taking a listen to this.
Favorites:
Enemy Within - First song heard with Angela in it. Great Intro
Burning Angel - DAMN the solo rules all solos of Angela's era
Heart Of Darkness - I just really like the guitars alot in this
Savage Messiah - Very creepy, yet catchy and dark powerhouse
Ravenous - Fast paced and full of agression
Snow Bound - Different sort of instrumental, nothing bad here
Behind The Smile - Has that driery echo during the damp chorus
Shadows And Dust - Pretty catchy and a nice most aspects of metal
Hydra - Very short but creepy instrumental, pretty sci-fi
overall rockin album.......2006-03-03
Its not quite as melodic as doomsday machine or anthems of rebellion, but very fast with good riffs and such. What i love is that they now have a female vocalest! When i first got into arch enemy i bought the album anthems of rebellion. I couldn't even tell it was a girl! She's one of the best female metal vocalists youll ever hear. I'm glad more and more females are being brought into the metal scene, especially people like Angela. I also listened to a few of their older songs, and Jhon doesnt even compare to her. I also bought doomsday machine and this album. All of these albums rock, i highly recommend. Arch enemy is an overall great band. Oh and also, some people into arch enemy might like the album "perfection in pain" by corporation 187. Songs like "religious connection", "Thursday-night aggression" and "perfection in pain" are some of the greatest thrash/death in history! Trust me these guys are amazing. As for this album, its not quite as good as anthems of rebellion or doomsday machine, but its good.

Well worth the effort.......2002-01-10
When people look back on the metal of 2001, what will be best remembered? Slayer's return to form with "God Hates Us All"? Slipknot failing to live up to the hype with the dire "Iowa"? Emperor's final exit with "Prometheus"? Deicide's crazed contractual obligation album "In Torment In Hell"?
If there was any justice in the world, "Wages of Sin" would be hailed as the defining album of 2001. It won't be, but hey, life ain't fair.
Right from the get go, Arch Enemy command respect. Even on first listen, the technical brilliance of the band is awe-inspiring. The riffing and soloing is amazing. It immediately gets in your face, grabs you by the ears, and shakes until you can't help but give it your full attention. This is not something to listen to while you're working, as you'll be constantly distracted. That's not to say it's overly technical in a prog-rock kind of way. No, this is interchangeable twin guitar rifferama, as pioneered by Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, where it's difficult to tell where rhythm and lead guitar blend seamlessly.
Chosing the outstanding tracks on this album is impossible. As each new track begins you think "this is the one!", but then the next track begins you think "or maybe this". There is not a dud, filler, or weaker track among them. Just as a random example, "Heart of Darkness" starts with what sounds like a riff left over from Carcass' pathologically essential Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious. Angela Gossow's gutteral growl (it says here it's a female vocalist, though it's difficult to believe!) also sounds a lot like that produced by the Carcass lads.
Latter day Carcass seems to be a reference point time and again, and if any band deserves to revisit the likes of "Heartwork" and "Swansong", it's Arch Enemy. After all, Michael Amott helped define their post-"Symphonies of Sickness" sound. All the same, it would be misleading and unfair to call Arch Enemy Carcass clones. This band has it's own unique musical identity, outmuscling a majority of so-called melodic death metal bands, but still retaining that essential listenability and attention to detail missing from more brutal bands.
While the brainwashed, baggy trousered hordes think they have found the essence of "extreme" metal in Slipknot and System Of A Down, anyone with an ear for what metal CAN be will be tracking this down and smiling quietly and blissfully.
Metalheads fantasy........2001-11-16
As for swedish death metal..this cd defies any album this year.
The new angle with the female vocalist, Angela Gowsse(spelling?) totally rips. First time i heard it i refused to beleive it was a girl..the production on this album is incredible, the guitar solo's remain iron maiden based, but with much more of a death metal sound to them..Coming from scandinavia, with a black\death metal background, i'd say that this is a must for any arch enemy, inflames, testament, even iron maiden fan for that matter.

Powell's Reach Exceeded His Grasp.......2005-05-12
John Powell (1882-1963) had a few years of notice as an American composer and pianist, particularly after he wrote his 'Rhapsodie Nègre' based on African-American themes. He was celebrated in his native Virginia; after living in Europe for a time he came home to Virginia where he continued to live and teach and compose. These two piano sonatas had a bit of attention but they essentially disappeared from view until resurrected by Roy Hamlin Johnson, long-time professor of piano at the University of Maryland. Johnson felt, rightly I suspect, that the 'Sonata Teutonica,' which initially ran over an hour, was better to be cut down and he edited it down to the 43-minute piece recorded here. It is in three movements, uses not particularly distinguished materials and tends to work them to death. The overall impression is quite frankly more American-sounding than 'teutonic,' and that is at least partly because it sounds so naïve. It has an open-faced charm that I can imagine won some friends when Powell was playing it in his own recitals back in the early years of the 20th century, but that charm has faded badly.
Although the earlier work, the 'Sonate Psychologique' (1906) is a bit more advanced, both in craft and in selection of thematic materials, it too is rather bland in effect. There are some interesting pseudo-Rachmaninoff passages, and we are reminded in the booklet notes that Powell, while living in Europe, was bowled over by an early performance of the Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto not long after its première. Still, there's not much here to get too excited about.
Roy Hamlin Johnson recorded these sonatas in 1977 and 1983 respectively, and they were originally issued separately on CRI LPs. The performances are stellar from a technical and musical perspective; clearly Johnson is a staunch advocate of these works.
I would not recommend these works except to those who are curious about Powell, or curious about American piano sonatas from the early 20th century. I was rather more positive about a recent recording of Powell's Symphony in A Major, the 'Virginia Symphony,' on the Albany label.

A Nice Discovery.......2003-11-03
Even thought I live in Virginia, I had never heard of this Virgnian composer or his music until I found this album on vinyl at a 2nd hand store. It is beautiful music. Don't let the Teutonica fool you, this music is not Wagner rather it is Chopin-esqe. Although it was written in 1913, it is definitely a Romantic era piece, albeit a bit more clean and sparse than most 19th century counterparts. Like some of the Naxos CDs, the appeal to this album is partly in finding an overlooked 20th century American composer. It is a hard to judge the performance, as there are no others with which to compare it. Roy Hamlin Johnson's playing is technically proficient and precise, but it would seem the music could benefit by a bit more expressive performance. As I only have this on vinyl, I don't know what the CD sounds like - but on vinyl the recording is warm and clear. All in all - this is wonderful music which does not deserve to be forgotten.

Who needs a woman? You've got Arch Enemy!.......2002-01-28
I knew this album would rock. Why? It was ARCH ENEMY. My friend turned me on to them one day after we were talking and I asked him what ever happened to CARCASS. He popped it in the disc man and I was hooked. Ever since I have slowly purchased their albums. I heard the release of their newest album and I was not willing to wait for it to come out here! I purchased it like within two days. It was worth the cash because I put it in my CD player... and had goosebumps from begining to end. It's aranged with a non-stop barrage of harmonies that you'd expect from them. The female singer... well I was a bit apprehensive about it, but.. Angela if your reading this... WILL YOU BE MY WIFE? Heh Well.. why are you still reading this? Place an order!
Melodic Death Perfection.......2001-09-20
The more I dive into the world of Swedish metal the more I find that it just rips apart American metal in contrast. The change to a female vocalist had me worried when I first heard about it but...damn she's got one hell of a deep growl. The dueling guitars are great, especailly right when they kick in on Enemy Within, great opener, I just love the solo's too it. Next comes one of the single best metal songs I've heard of this side of Opeth, Burning Angel. The opening riffs and solo's at the begining just rule for the lack of a better term. Savage Messiah, Web of Lies, and Heart Of Darkness are mindboggling great too.
I recommend this to any fan of In Flames, Dark Tranquility, or Soilwork.
Hail ARCH ENEMY!.......2001-08-12
I just got my hands on this several hours ago and I feel quite confident giving it 5 stars. A truly phenominal new release from this remarkable group. I was initially drawn to this album when reading about the new female vocalist Angela Gossow, who was said to have these great deathy gutteral vocals and screams. I couldn't really believe it without hearing it, but now I see! I still can't believe I'm hearing a female. It's incredible. It reminds me most of IN FLAMES. Musically the album contains all the great guitar-chases that we have come to expect from an ARCH ENEMY-release. The sound reminds me of NEVERMORE with the melodious guitars, slow intros and powerful riffs that are very hooky, but still extremely tough. The band uses breakneck-speed for shade, contrast and variety, rarely for long moments in the songs. Hopefully this will be released soon in the US so more people can enjoy it.
hair raising, blood pumping music.........2001-07-23
There I was sitting in the car with a friend of mine talking about music stuff. When I happen to mention "man, when is arch enemy releasing a new album..?", just before I said another word he raised his hand and said.. "don't say another word and listen" so I prepared myself for the best but when the music played my jaw dropped (like always duh.. ARCH ENEMY) but this time I drooled a bit, and then I said "MAAAN THAT GUY SINGING ROOOOCKS" (my heart started pumping faster at the sound of the music).. He said "What guy?". and I said, "What do u mean? did they actually hire a demon?) he said "nope, a girl". So I almost died laughing until he opened the CD cover and showed me her photo. I thought (AAaah THE GIRL OF MY DREAMS..). Anyway.. the music is extreme, and I couldn't believe how good this girl sings.
THE BEST BY THE BEST..........2001-06-06
Finally I have this CD in my hands! Arch Enemy is one of those bands that you know what to expect on every album, but at the same time they always surprise us with something new...This CD isn't the exception. Thay take different elements from all their albums and combine them in an explosive mixture of heavy metal...Fast songs, slow songs, great solos(maybe their best), great intros, lots of melodies, and add a proggressive touch in "Enemy Within'"... I think the best on this album is that the songs have lots of riffs and variations, and changes of rhythms...My favorite album?...still a tough call... The vocals?...Well, I have nothing against Angela Gossow, and I think she does a great job in the album, but I prefer Johan. But don't worry! The MUSIC is SO GREAT that you won`t even pay attention to the vocals! Those four samples on the net can give you a general idea of the album, but listen to the whole album before making an opinion...I don`t want to describe each song 'cause I'll ruin the surprise... This CD rocks from beginning to end. The best album I've heard in a REALLY LONG TIME! I play it on and on...I can't stop listening to it... For all Arch Enemy and heavy metal fans...You won't be disappointed!
