BOC at their finest.......2007-06-25
Through the years, there haven't been a whole lot of hard rock bands willing to go the extra mile and add some creativity to their music as a way to spice up the fun, but Tyranny and Mutation is an album full of interesting and flat out mind-boggling WEIRD musical ideas. In addition to that, this is also the fastest rock Blue Oyster Cult ever put on record (since most of their stuff was slow, dreary and disturbing).
It's a really fast-paced rocking record. The vocal melodies are quite good as well. Blue Oyster Cult should be remembered for years to come, thanks to the band members choosing to make their music distinct, clever and exciting in the early days.
A Cult Classic.......2006-11-02
This is a great recording for anyone who enjoys the Blue Oyster Cult. They have one of the best lead guitarist in the world. He's right up there with Clapton and Page. This recording shows a lot of his talent. Check out their new live CD with a DVD included and watch him play that guitar. He's great. they're great and this recording is great.
Another Good One.......2006-10-17
BOC's second album mines similar territory to their debut with it's mix of hard rock, metal, jams, and just plain weirdness. The original vinyl album was divided into two sections, side one called "The Black" and side two "The Red". Side one is pretty much straight ahead rock and roll. The album starts out with "The Red And The Black" which is a re done version of "I'm On The Lamb But I Ain't No Sheep" which appeared on their first album. It is followed by "O.D.'d On Life Itself", "Hot Rails To Hell" and "& Screaming Diz-Busters" all former concert staples. Side two, The Red, mixes in more variety with some of BOC's patented mysterious lyrics. You can tell just by the titles that this is not your average stuff, "Baby Ice Dog", "Wings Wetted Down", "Teen Archer", and "Mistress Of The Salmon Salt", all delightfully strange. Personally I don't think this album is quite as good as their debut, but it is a good one and the first half is some of the most rocking music BOC produced in their career.
Not just a continuation of that great debut.......2006-06-16
This album never left my turntable back when i first bought it when in high school. I had every hard rock, prog rock, "metal" (or whatever we called in back then) album there was. Spent a fortune on music in the early 70's. But this album and, obviously, the first one, were as wild, outlandish, unhinged, funny and hard rocking as you could get back then. The combination of writing, tone, and musicianship were without peer. Period. My ONLY gripe with the first two BOC albums? The mixing was heinous. Why did they make even the best stereo sound crappy? The drumming had no "weight". The guitars were muted. The vocals just didnt project the sound these guys deserved. They sounded like they were recorded from inside a beer can. It didn't improve until "Secret Treaties" which, while not an improvement over the first two in content, at least sounded like a hard rock album should. But, after 30+ years, i still would group the first two BOC albums as all time favorites.
BOC's first TRULY solid effort in a long line of CLASSICS!!.......2006-02-24
The second in BOC's "Black and White" period. The B&W period consists of their first three albums and is named that for the dark and cryptic over-tones they possess (an everlasting theme they've perfected to this day, but yet not to the extent of the B&W period), and ofcourse, the black and white album-covers they sport. Personally, Tyranny & Mutation is by far my favorite of BOC's first three massive assaults, and is a lot tighter and well-rounded than the first. It's divided in two sections, "The Black" and "The Red", and the first track is appropriately called "The Red & The Black" and is actually an impressive re-doing of "I'm On The Lamb But I Ain't No Sheep" off their debut. Stand-outs are "O.D.d' On Life Itself", "Hot Rails To Hell", "Wings Wetted Down" and "Mistress Of The Salmon Salt" (commonly known as "Quicklime Girl"). But in my opinion, EVERY song on this impressive album totally rocks and has the MOST classic (and dark!) rock & roll sound and "feel" to it, of the entire B&W period. Where as the first and third may have just a couple possible throw-away tracks, Tyranny & Mutation is solid from start to finish, and it begins to show the incredible talents of the band, and demonstrates what I love most about BOC: they are one of THE most creative and interesting bands out there! If you liked their debut, then you are sure to love their second effort with even more ease than the first (though it doesn't take much effort at all to get into these guys). An instant classic!

Amphetamine metal muscle.......2004-09-29
Early on during the development of "metal" music, Blue Oyster Cult hammered out this masterpiece. BOC practically invented the genre, then mastered it after only 2 albums. This disc deserves 5 stars based on the song titles alone... Mistress of the Salmon Salt? Wings Wetted Down? Hot Rails to Hell? What the...? In the end we have eight tracks, all classics full of menace, dread, and threatening skies, yet filled with hooks and an obvious sense of humor. BOC is the sound of a Hemi 'Cuda crossed with a Porsche 930 - sometimes tire-melting burnout and dual exhaust rumble, and sometimes top speed turbo whine. Anyone that loves the sound of a Gibson guitar being plugged into a Marshall amp will find this gratifying.
Heaviest Cult Of Em All.......2001-08-06
BOC leaves the murky dungeon of their debut and leaps into a harder, faster brighter sound with Tyranny and Mutation. The opening of "The Red And The Black"(formerly "I'm On The Lamb But I Ain't No Sheep") is like getting hit by a metallic freight train. The sting continues throughout the first portion (I AM A vinyl oldster, so it's side one kids)with Bloom's menacing (only Gene Simmons ever outdid him)"OD'd On Life Itself", Albert Bouchards pounding riff heavy "Hot Rails To Hell" and Bloom's "Seven Screaming Diz Busters" which is like a journey into hell itself. It took years for me to appreciate side two as much, but now I find myself actually preferring it; it's a little lighter, more psychedelic, not unlike the earlier Stalk Forrest Group material. These songs suck you into a vortex instead of beating you over the head. I guess that's why the LP's sides were labeled Red (side one) and Black (side two). I also see the 'Red' as Tyranny and 'Black' as Mutation.
Great B.O.C. record :).......2001-08-03
Every song is good, no, make that excellent. Some are just incredible; downright spooky at times. I usually play the first 4 songs in a row: "The Red and the Black", "O.D.'d On Life Itself", "Hot Rails To Hell", and "7 Screaming Diz-Busters". Then I usually top it off with "Mistress of the Salmon Salt (Quicklime Girl)". Each of these songs are so different from each other, and they all feature great musicianship and catchy guitar riffs and solos. Buck Dharma (whom I've personally met twice and is a very nice guy) is such an incredibly fluid guitarist and sings well to boot. Eric Bloom has one of the most versatile and powerful voices in all of rock 'n' roll. Alan Lanier plays some mean keyboards that sometimes sound aquatic, sometimes sound spooky, always sounding unique. The Bouchard Bros. kick ... as a great rhythm section!
Remember, "Red And Black-- It's their color scheme"; "1277 Express To Heaven"; and "Lucifer Delight". If you can name the songs that each line is from, then--and only then--can you consider yourself to be a fan of TYRANNY AND MUTATION by the amazing Blue Oyster Cult.
All in all, B.O.C. rules. This record is one of their all-time greats. :)
A total album experience..........2001-05-09
There are albums with some great songs and some not-so-great songs, and then there are albums that come together as a seemless whole. Tyranny and Mutation is a perfect example of the latter type of album. I've never had a desire to put any one song from this album onto a mix tape, yet when I listen to this album from beginning to end there is an undeniable aura of greatness around it. Tyranny and Mutation is a gloriously unique amalgamation of rock, metal, and some X-factor that only Blue Oyster Cult possesses. One of the best and most interesting rock albums ever!
THE PEARL.......2001-05-01
I'M NOT A BIG BOC FAN. BUT THIS ONE IS BY FAR THE BEST . IT JUST ROCKS. NOT 3 CHORD AC/DC CRAP. INTRICATE SONGS, TIGHTLY ARRANGED AND PERFORMED WITH ENERGY, ENTHUSIASM, AND MEGA-WATTAGE. VERY CRISP AND CLEAN SOUND. ALL BUT 2 SONGS ARE JUST GREAT. BUT THE BRILLIANCE OF HOT RAILS TO HELL (SHOULDA BEEN A BIG HIT) AND DIZ BUSTERS (PROG LIKE?) EASILY MAKE UP FOR THE 2 LESS THAN GREAT TUNES. ESSENTIAL EARLY 70'S METALISM WITH SOME QUIETER LAID BACK AND SLICK MOMENTS. I PLAY THIS ONE TO ANNOY MY TECHNO-TRANCE-MIX-DOOF DOOF DOOF-PLAYING NEIGHBORS. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Seminal Thinking Persons "metal" Music... Buy Now........2006-09-10
Although they have certainly been guilty of "hit and miss" concerning the fidelity of their commercially released discs; ~On Your Feet or On Your Knees~ is effectively unlistenable - BOC has always made music of a nature which far exceeded ANYTHING in their genre as to intelligence and could still burn most "metal" bands releasing today to the ground and scatter their ashes. They are one of the few bands that has led me the encylopedia or dictionary more than once while listening to their works. Based in the frozen NorthEast / Canada, the members of BOC hold numerous higher degrees and have often taken hiatus from the group for extended periods, leading to sporadic disc release and occasional session player fill. This notwithstanding, the first three BOC discs remain emminently listenable and as relevant today as they were on the day of their respective releases. The original Columbia CD releases were, alas, somewhat lacking in fidelity and it is no small blessing to finally see the first 3 [BOC, Tyranny and Mutation, Secret Treaties] finally released in a cleaned up format, although I would hunt for the "certified" remastered recordings of these discs as a starter for anyone interested in BOC. For a single disc primer, may I suggest "ETI Live" and may I actively discourage ANY purchase of On Your Feet or On Your Knees until it is Thoroughly reworked / fixed - if that is possible. Enjoy the these first three works as brilliant / every track is good Good GOOD and/or great, but do not hesitate to expiriment with later BOC releases, although they run the gamet from profound to questionable to "your call". Interesting BOC trivia: the "Fire of Unknown Origin" disc was originally composed and offered as the soundtrack to the film Heavy Metal but declined in favor of a more traditional mix and match of artists for the film music. Before I continue, I would just like to say stop whatever you are doing and find a copy of this incredible CD. MFSL did an outstanding job remastering the 2 albums and damn do they sound great........listen to Cities on Flame really really really loud and tell me mfsl didnt do a knockout job on these 2 albums
Excellent mastering of two excellent albums.......2000-02-11
This is a great disc -- two of BOC's best albums in the best sound they've ever had.
Some of the reviewers below have complained about Columbia's CDs of these albums. The thing to understand about those discs is that they were mastered back in the mid-80s when the hype about CDs was mostly oriented around the excellent signal-to-noise ratio of digital audio. Because of this, the record companies felt that it was of primary importance that CDs should have no noise (hiss) whatsoever. Consequently, CD mastering engineers would filter out frequencies in which noise was found in a recording. In the case of BOC's first album (a rather hissy set of tapes, as this new Mobile Fidelity disc shows), this resulted in a very dull, muffled-sounding CD. Columbia's engineers, to reduce noise, had filtered the treble frequencies so severely that the music sounded as if it were coming through a wall.
Mobile Fidelity has chosen to reduce hiss only where doing so would not degrade the music (standard practice nowadays); this gold disc, therefore, has much more lively sound than Columbia's disc, but also more hiss.
So don't buy this gold disc thinking that it will sound perfect -- it doesn't, for the simple reason that the original tapes aren't perfect either. But it does sound a great deal better than Columbia's CD, and the combination of two albums on one CD means that it's a much better deal than most gold CDs.

Thee BO'C starter kit!.......2004-11-04
You can't go wrong with this set of the first three classic BOC albums!
The perfect place to start and hear what all the fans were raving about. No "Don't Fear The Reaper",no,no that was far into the future. This is the stuff that punk bands loved!
Yes,it's dated...but damn it great!
You need this!
Really good, but..........2002-02-01
This box set is a handy collection of Blue Oyster Cult's first three albums, collectively known as the "black-and-white period", when the band was a cult attraction nevertheless drawing increasing attention. These three records, which contain standards like 'Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll', 'The Red and the Black' and 'Career of Evil', form the core of the evidence for BOC's being the ultimate "thinking man's metal band". The only thing is that, since this box was released, all three of these albums have been remastered and re-released with bonus tracks and new liner notes, so this collection is a bit outdated. By all means, however, it is worth checking out these classic albums in practically any form.
I'm playing catch up.......2001-12-17
20 years ago, when I was turned on to BOC, I didn't like these albums. They sounded "different". Well, all I have to say to that is damn, did I miss out! These are really GREAT albums. About '98 are realized I was hungry for more BOC. I remembered I didn't care much for their "early" work but they are my favorite band, bar none. What a shock I got. Now I know why they are so highly rated among others even more so. This stuff is fantastic. I'd also like to get across the fact that these albums did not "grow" on me. The last time I heard these albums was back in '79/80. I just didn't get it then. As soon as I played these CDs I was blown away and amazed that I waited this long. DAMN! The plus is, this is like new music to me. Its all very fresh. You can say I returned to old gods. 5 stars be damned! 10+ stars! Excellent price too! Enjoy.
TYRANNY... OR ON YOUR KNEES ! ! !.......2001-11-07
(Fâches-Thumesnil, 25 Juillet 1998)
Mandatory - The BOC Curriculum Vitae.......2001-08-26
Sometimes you get so tunnel-visioned into scanning for obscure and hidden trees that you miss the Stalk-Forrest (one of this band's earlier tags). This commendably low-priced set represents the black-and-white-covers era when , true to their final choice for band name, these guys mainly WERE a cult item. At this early stage, BOC were short on marketing strategies but long on creativity and experimentation, thus the songs off these first three lps -while nominally "metal"- have a je nai sais quai (my apologies to outraged French grammarians) that sets these tracks apart from their later, slicker, post-AGENTS OF FORTUNE output. Odd touches and surreal moments abound, with just enough pedal-to-the-metal applied to remind you that these guys are primarily a hard rock band, albeit one with enough craft and smarts to not get bogged down in formula. The self-titled first features such rave-ups as "Transmaniacon MC", "Cities On Flame With Rock & Roll" and "Stairway to the Stars", but the album's real treasures are its unclassifiable cross-genre hybrids: "Before the Kiss, A Redcap" (wonderfully strange jazzy blues), "I'm on the Lamb But I Ain't No Sheep" (an early version of "The Red and the Black" best described as progressive bluegrass), and the haunting and otherworldly "Then Came The Last Days of May" (a classic of subtle, idyllic menace presaging "Don't Fear The Reaper" years later). Only the album's inferior mix annoys - thus this overall set only nabs four stars from me. TYRANNY & MUTATION fixes the sound problems and steps up the intensity besides - it was around this time that the band's ambient liner notes started to backfire on them (believe it or don't, there was some scuttlebutt at the time that BOC were neo-Nazis - despite the fact that most of the band's Jewish! Of course, in those days, there were a lot of such silly urban legends afoot regarding longhaired heavy-rockers) and highlights on the album include at least three stone-classics: "Hot Rails to Hell", "OD'd On Life Itself" and "7 Screaming Diz-Busters". The last album collected, SECRET TREATIES, is probably the apogee of this early, eclectic BOC style, a way-out blend of mysticism, pop-culture science fiction imagery and highly tasty melodic metal which resulted in one great song after another: "Career of Evil", "Subhuman", "Flaming Telepaths", "Harvester of Eyes", etc. After this slam-dunk of seductive strangeness, the influence of producers Pearlman & Krugman and creative consultant Richard Meltzer -which had been considerable- lessened somewhat (but paved the way for Michael Moorcock's later work with the band). If you're waiting for me to add "and they were never this good again", well, that's a bit harsh. They remained a quality band - just a lot less unpredictable and bizarre, though there's always a little more than meets the ear on all of their subsequent albums.

Remastered.......2001-06-03
Well, these two albums sound a little better re-mastered than the original Columbia CD releases. It might be just my copy(though it sounds like it's in the master) of the original Secret Treaties has a weird skip in the song 'Cagey Cretins', that is fixed up here. It might be just me, but was there additional reverb added to these albums on this re-master ?(that's a no no,don't mess with a classic, see my review of Iggy And The Stooges "Raw Power") The packaging is OK, the booklet fairly informative, however the 'bonus tracks' are nothing more than cuts that are already available on the first album, totally an unnecessary addition. I still have to give this such a high rating because you can't find fault with the music on either of these two albums. Tyranny and Treaies both represented BOC at their pinnacle; musically they never rose to this level again, despite commercial hits (I don't care about things like that) on later albums that mainstream guys will try to tell you are better because they sold more. The original 3 "Black And White" (referring to the artwork concept)albums are the ones that really matter. Cult was an intellectual metal band with prog rock leanings that helped inspire(along with Budgie, Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Grand Funk Railroad,Black Sabbath) what is termed today as 'stoner rock' (see Monster Magnet, Kyuss, George Brigman & Split,Sunwheel Power Express,Spirit Caravan etc.)Their music needs to live on.
2 albums + 2 tracks.......2001-05-20
Made in FRA in 2000, Serial# 3063322, Playing Time 84:23
Part of "The Back To Black Collection", this 2-disc set unites BOC's 2nd album, 1973's "Tyranny And Mutation" on disc 1, plus 1 track from their 1st album, along with a 2nd disc which is made up of 1974's "Secret Treaties", their 3rd album, plus another track from their 1st album.
If you're unfamiliar with this series, the packaging is made like a black booklet, with the artwork in silver, while the inside (28 pages) features lyrics, liner notes, all in full-colour.
Worth buying instead of the 2 "regular" editions of the albums; if you've already got them, this item may not be worth buying, even though it has great packaging...
