    Album Description

"Sacred Ground" is a fascinating and important new recording that grew from David Murray's involvement in the acclaimed documentary film, Banished, directed by Marco Williams. Although it's virtually unknown, more than a dozen counties in the U.S. violently expelled thousands of families between the Civil War and the Great Depression. The film - and this recording - explores not only these historical facts, but also the legacy of these events in the communities and for the descendants of the families.

After exploring the themes of the film he'd been asked to score, Murray was inspired - indeed compelled - to dig deeper, and to compose further music. David Murray enlisted poet Ishmael Reed, one of today's pre-eminent African- American literary figures. Reed wrote two poems, performed here by the great Cassandra Wilson.

David chose to record this using his Black Saint Quartet - sometimes called Power Quartet, on the group's first outing since the passing of the great John Hicks last year. Logically then, David enlisted pianist Lafayette Gilchrist, informally a Hicks student and admirer, and on drums the great Andrew Cyrille. Bassist Ray Drummond completes this first class group.

5 out of 5 stars Soulful and engaging.......2007-02-18

I first encountered Sweet Honey and the Rock in 2003 at Michigan Wymns Music Festival. They were fantastic. Recently, one of my chorus mates suggested the track I Remeber, I Believe as something we should sing in our spring concert. Our director agreed and I couldn't be more trilled. I purchased two copies of the CD, one for myself and one for the daughter of a friend of mine. It is a permanent part of my car audio collection. Try Sweet Honey out and you'll fall in love with their five part harmonies, their personal touch, and the sweet voices of a wonderful, soulful group of wymn.

    4 out of 5 stars Holy Music.......2006-08-14

I bought this CD for one song, We Are, a powerful anthem that I had been taught by a dear friend. However, every song on this CD is powerful in its own right and has served and nurtured me over time. Sweet Honey is an amazing a cappella musical group that has evolved out of the African American political and historical experience. With Sacred Ground, Sweet Honey focuses on the spiritual dimensions of political and social challenges such as prejudice and poverty. The result for me, is always a sense of renewal and energy that feeds the soul, soothes the heart and harmonizes mind and body. Sacred Ground is an invaluable CD for any one who works with dispirited and often disembodied people. While most "new age" music, emphasizes a certain spaciousness, Sacred Ground which has its roots in traditional gospel and folk music argues in favor of groundedness as a source of heartful strength. Its just this side of divine.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Pick.......2005-02-25

This is really the best. Great sound and beat. Excelent recording sound and meaningful music.

5 out of 5 stars Voices of real angels!.......2002-10-04

I got hooked on "Sweet Honey..." several years ago when I an interview on NPR. This CD really shows off their voices. It also shows how 'into' this genre they are! Highly recommend this CD. Heck, I highly recommend all their CDs!

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Work.......2000-09-26

I cannot express how grateful I am for this CD. It while I was listening to the amazing voices of these women that God helped me find my way out of a depression (I know it sounds corny, but it's true). While nothing compares to seeing this group perform live, all of their albums are incredible and a must to own. This one has a very spiritual focus, while others sometimes focus more on secular problems. No matter which album you choose, if you like music that is beautiful in every sense of the word, Sweet Honey in the Rock will not dissapoint you.

3 out of 5 stars Authentic yes, good for yoga no.......2003-09-13

While this CD is enjoyable for the simple authentic flavor and richness of the individual tracks, I was unable to enjoy this with a yoga practice, and chose to change CD's in the middle of my class. There is no flow from one track to another, the tracks were arranged in a disjointed fashion where there would be a slow track then a fast track, then maybe another slow track again. Very difficult to build a rhythm or tempo for a class or private yoga setting.

5 out of 5 stars Music to the ears and the soul.......2003-04-24

Wow! Classical Indian Music at its best. The music is soothing and lays a great background to practice Yoga or to just unwind. Divine in every way, I have never got bored of this CD as I use it again and again in my Yoga sessions.

'Natrani' was the best track for me as it reminds me most of Indian folk-fare whilst the OM Chants mix reverberating both in my soul and mind; 'On Sacred Ground' sets a slow and moving background for getting deeper into the practice. 'Purnima Namaskar' is melodious, gentle and soothing to the soul as you prepare to go into and come out of meditation. The laugh is a nice tinge welcoming you back to the present moment.

    Great stuff!

Boy, talk about a trip down memory lane...this CD and the 3 singles they released from it take me back to my childhood- I can remember hearing all these songs when I was 5, 6, 7 years old. I recently bought this CD and rediscovered their sound which is very traditional...anyone who knows my taste in country knows how much I love, respect, and treasure true country, and that's just what you'll find on this album. McBride and the Ride's music is genuine, moving, and honest. Hopefully more people will make the same rediscovery I have and this group will make a comeback.

5 out of 5 stars Sensual, surrender lover's song to the creator - Exceptional.......2001-03-10

The first section of the CD takes a journey of sweet surrender to the Lord with captivating transition to a Hindi devotional chant that is no less than making love through song and expression. Vocal movements are extraordinary and Sophia's spirit comes through as though in her presence.

I remained in combined awe and trance... If you hear this, you will want to buy it - period.

btw - I first heard this on a tape of a friend's 3 days ago and immediately ordered the CD. I inadvertently ordered 4 CDs, so thought I might give them as gifts. Within 4 hours of recieving the CDs, I played for 2 separate friends - they immediately said they wanted to buy the CD and when heard I had extras, each person wanted to get my extras for them and their friends.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2006-11-23

This CD has a mixture of pieces that would have been performed in a domestic setting, from secular/devotional songs to verse anthems, virginal music and viol consort. Many of the vocal pieces are found in Byrd's "Songs of Sundry Natures." I particularly enjoyed the verse anthems 'Have Mercy Upon Me, O God' and especially 'Christ Rising Again' which is probably the finest recording of that well-known anthem that I've ever heard. Red Byrd captures the domestic nature of these pieces, which is nothing like the typical ethereal cathedral boy soprano/Tallis Scholars type of performance that you would normally hear. They have a very earthy sound and the viol consort plays quite energetically. I also am a big fan of historical pronunciation which they use. And of course I can never get enough of Caroline Trevor's fantastic alto voice. As a result, I've bought every Red Byrd CD I can get my hands on. Do yourself a favor and pick up this bargain CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best of all recordings of William Byrd.......2005-07-14

William Byrd is regarded by many as the greatest composer England has ever produced, as a kind of musical Shakespeare. He was certainly one of the greatest of the composers of the Seconda Prattica from around the period of the Reformation and Counter Reformation.

The collection of consort music here is simply superb. Pieces like 'John Kiss Me Now' remind us of the fact that variation form began in England around this time. All of the performances are as good as any I have yet to hear of Byrd's music and Naxos clearly scored something of a coup when managing to sign up this group for a recording like this. This would be equally highly recommendable for three times the price. Just look at the list of performers and you will even find Tesser Bonner of the Tallis Scholars listed here. Needless to say she sings beautifully too.

Perhaps my very favourite aspect of this recording is the fact that period pronounciation is used. While some may feel this to be pedantic, the rather quaint and rustic sounding Tudor English pronouciation in my mind only enhances the characterfulness of the pieces. I must say it puzzles me why even the likes of Emma Kirky insists on using modern English pronouciation when singing Byrd.

This is a hugely enjoyable CD and for the price it is a genuine steal that enhances the image of Naxos as a company dedicated to quality music making, that puts the giant multinational recording cooporations to utter shame. For that Naxos deserve our accolade and support.

5 out of 5 stars The Fine Diamond Orchestral Series Continues.......2004-10-16

David Diamond (b. 1915, and still with us) has been one of American's finest composers since between the two world wars. In the late 1980s and early 1990s the Delos label issued a series of fine recordings of his orchestral music with the Seattle Symphony conducted by Gerard Schwarz. Naxos has been re-releasing them at budget price (although I notice that the Delos version of this release is still available here at Amazon at mid-price). For some reason each individual Naxos release has typically had slightly different contents from its Delos predecessor, but this one exactly reproduces its Delos source. And a nice one it is, too.

'TOM' was intended to be a ballet based on 'Uncle Tom's Cabin,' set to a scenario by E. E. Cummings as requested by American ballet impresario Lincoln Kirstein. But obstacles arose and the ballet was never produced. Here we have a 23-minute, 12-movement suite fashioned from the full ballet score by the composer a couple of years later, in 1937. The music was written when Diamond was only twenty and still a student of Roger Sessions. One can hear some of Sessions's granitic style, but it is leavened by folk-rhythms and -melodies. One can almost hear Diamond developing his mature style with both its etched neoclassic and seductively romantic qualities as the music proceeds. An exemplar of the former is the Stravinskyan 'Dance of the Slavetraders and Human Bloodhounds,' and of the latter is the following 'Dance of Thankfulness for Freedom.'

In 1963 conductor Josef Krips asked Diamond to compose a choral setting of Lincoln's 'Gettysburg Address.' It was premièred late that year by Lukas Foss conducting Krips's Buffalo Symphony Orchestra. It is set for chorus, children's chorus, baritone solo and orchestra and this recording features not only the Seattle Symphony but also the Seattle Symphony Chorus, the Seattle Girls' Choir, the Northwest Boychoir, and baritone Erich Parce. The text is printed in the CD's accompanying booklet. Solemn, tonal/modal, straightforwardly patriotic, it sounds as if it might have been written twenty years earlier during World War II. Deeply heart-felt, it wears it earnestness on its sleeve and one wonders how it was greeted at its première in the turbulent 1960s. As is always the case with this sort of piece, how it is heard is at least partly determined by the tenor of the times in which it is performed. In these days of another war, it is, for me, difficult to avoid thinking of young men (and women) who have also found their 'final resting place,' and hoping it has been for some lasting purpose as it clearly was for those who fell in our Civil War.

Diamond's 30-minute, two-movement Eighth Symphony was written in 1960 to honor of his long-time friend, Aaron Copland, on his sixtieth birthday. Written in mostly tonal but highly chromatic style, it makes more than occasional use of Bergian post-tonality albeit in non-aggressive fashion. The first movement begins rather harshly with a tone-row pounded out by the full orchestra. A more lyrical second theme becomes increasingly important and through various manipulations of both motifs the movement winds its way to a vigorous Schumanesque (Bill, not Robert) brass/percussion peroration that then ends with a diffident upward questioning gesture. The second movement is an adagio Theme and Variations (seven of them) ending in a grand double fugue whose theme is derived from the first theme of the first movement. This is not one of Diamond's more lyrical symphonies. It was written at a time when American composers were facing the atonal imperative--indeed, his friend Copland had just written his twelve-tone 'Connotations' for orchestra--but the ever-present Romantic nature of Diamond's music keeps winning through. So, although this is perhaps the toughest of Diamond's symphonies and to some degree uncharacteristic of his overall style, one still hears the rhythmic, harmonic and structural qualities that are so identifiably Diamondesque.

Schwarz and his Seattle forces perform admirably throughout.
