This is it..........2005-08-30
This is easily my favorite of the Ensemble Unicorn albums, providing an excellent contrast to Carl Orff's far more modern rendition (especially track 13). This CD is a must have, and three of the tracks, Bache, Bene Venies, Vite perdite, and Tempus est iocundum stand out as some of the best renditions of early music that I have ever heard.
This recording blends the impeccable balance of the instrumentation with excellent vocals, (listen for Bernhard Landauer and Eric Mentzel, the countertenor and tenor, respectively). This is as much as you could ask for, and certainly more than you could expect, in an Early Music recording.
A feisty little musical riot.......2005-07-12
If you've ever been even slightly curious as to how Medieval secular music might have sounded but were unsure if it was for you this is a great place to start. At this price Naxos makes musical terra incognita much easier to explore. The results here are an absolute riot and are barrels of fun. There is life, rhythm and colour in abundance - all of which makes it irresistible from start to finish. The only word of warning is that this definitely NOT Gregorian chant and if that is what you want you will be in for a huge shock. The music here is gregarious, bawdy and populated with drunkards and virgins being deflowered. It is really all completely over the top.
As always Michael Posch is to be thoroughly commended for the sheer spontaneity of the musical feast that he unfailingly serves up. Too often music making of Medieval music seems awfully dry and academic - whereas this is way too riotous for that, even though a good deal of musicological research has gone to recreating Medieval performing practice.
The final carrot to go and buy this recording is the fantastic recorded sound. Naxos you have put many a major recording firm to utter shame with this release, who all to frequently demand several times the price for dreadful recordings/transfer - with Virgin Classics being the worst offender. Audiophiles after a miraculous bargain should pounce at the oppurtunity. Soundstaging is glorious, with air around the instruments, balance, detail, focus balanced by some warmth. It is all there for the taking!
A wondrous look into secular medieval music.......2004-09-07
I originally purchased this album because of one song: Bacche Bene Venies. I have heard countless versions of this song from varying quality ensembles.
Out of all the arrangements of any of the original Carmina Buranas, this album contains all of them. The always-brilliant Ensemble Unicorn has once again captured the mood of the music, showing the listener what these songs and poems really were: (often very filthy) drinking songs and poems for the medieval pilgrim. This album is a must have for the early music enthusiast.
More fine familiar material from Ensemble Unicorn.......2003-03-20
Ensemble Unicorn and Oni Wytars, as I've noted in other reviews here, seem to shine especially on one-line monodic material where the performers must make their own arrangements. This is music tailor made to that approach --- especially since not all of the poems have their own tunes, and those that do have them recorded in hard to read neumes rather than staff notation. Melodies for the poems with no music at all are often borrowed from other period pieces.
The arrangements may be too busy for some early music purists, but they are quite entertaining, and the experience of listening to this is more like listening to a pop or folk record than classical music. That makes this recording the most consistently listenable record of the material since Thomas Binkley's versions of twenty years ago. High points of this record are the fine performance of the timely -Ecce torpet probitas- and the duelling fiddles of -Clauso Chronos-. You also get the near-mandatory -Exiit diluculo- and -Tempus est jocundum-.

Conductus, organum, and discantus may not be words in your everyday vocabulary, but these terms identify musical forms that defined everyday musical activity during one of music history's most fruitful periods. The 12th century in France, especially in Paris--the artistic, educational, and religious center of Western Europe--saw enormous progress in the arts, architecture, and education. Not surprisingly, technical and theoretical aspects of music advanced as well. On this disc, the six-voice men's ensemble Lionheart demonstrates in vivid, rich vocal tones the sometimes stark but always powerful sound of Medieval chant and its expanded two- and three-part forms. The liner notes give clear explanations of the compositions and provide the listener with meaningful historical context. But listening to these excellent voices is not just an educational experience. The music has an inherent purity, sensuality, and honesty that's refreshing and reassuring. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
You know you want to... buy it!.......2005-10-30
I was able to attend a live performance of many of these tracks by Lionheart at the International Medieval Conference at Kalamazoo in May 2005. Being a fan of early polyphony and chant, I couldn't wait for the concert to start. Then the lights dimmed in the theater, and people quieted down, waiting for the performers to arrive. What was a pleasent surprise for me was that a faint melody line threaded its way from the hall at the theater's entrance. Here Lionheart was performing the first song on the CD, "Breves dies hominis." As they filed into the theater and made their way to the stage chanting they passed by my aisle seat. For a moment I was not in the theater- I was in the newly constructed cathedral of Notre Dame, the monks' singing intermingling with the structure of the cathedral...
By then (mind you we haven't even gotten through the first song) I knew I would have to get the CD. The songs are beautifully done, the harmonics are right on, and, in my humble opinion, the style is most authentic I've heard so far. This album is a fine example of early polyphony and chant. If you feel the need to buy that chant CD to see what it's all about- don't go to the $7.99 generic CD that you find everywhere, mostly because they lack the soul that chant should have and not very well done. Instead, buy this album, and enjoy what music should be.
exquisite purity of sound.......2002-12-04
Lionheart, a six man a cappella ensemble, have such perfect unity, and a sound so clear, they make this collection of 13th century chants one of the most peaceful CDs I own. Great for study, reading, or just to listen to its beauty, this mystical, glorious plainchant is a joy.
As is typical with this kind of music which is based on the Gregorian chant, the tempos and sound levels are even, and very serene.
Leonin was a composer and priest at Nortre Dame, and Perotin his student, who revised and added complexity and voices to the music.
The pieces are about the Virgin Mary, some Greek mythology, the evils of a world at war, and more. The booklet insert has the words for all 18 chants in Latin and English. Recorded at the Leominster Priory, England, in 1997, the sound is great and total time 73'54.
Lionheart, acclaimed internationally for their interpretations of various styles of music, have given us a superb, impeccable recording of medieval chants with this lovely CD.
Marvellous Chant and Polyphony from 12th Century France.......2000-06-05
I have gotten so enchanted when I heard this magic CD. The voices are so special. They bring us the atmosphere of the religiosity of medieval France. All is vibrant in this CD. When I am listening the music, I can feel myself in an old medieval abbey. I can imagine the mass, the medieval world. This Cd is the most sensitive work that I have heard lately.

The Way It Should Be Done!!.......2005-06-04
Morgoth is a band that I got into way after their 1 day in the sun. Odium is my first and only experience with this band. The key word here is experience! Odium is an absolute classic metal album that travels through so may grooves and time changes. They don't rely on repetitive guitar chords or blast beats. Morgoth just crank out awesome Metal. They have a sound of their own. They have Death, Thrash and even very good Industrial influences on this album. The vocals sounds like a cross between Megadeth and Obituary. They were way over looked as many of the most talented bands are. There's not much more to say except get this CD. You can pick it up for dirt-cheap.
odium.......2003-09-12
these german death veterans are (or were!) the farthest technical death metal could ever get. This and "cursed" are classics of the genre. the music will make you 'see' what is meant by the term "German precision". this was done in 1991 and the production on it is just as crisp as the newest death metal releases. i usually dont support the death metal genre because it quickly tends to get boring but these guys are an exception and their music preserves the harshness of the genre while staying entertainingly (cant find a better word) punishing. 'Golden age' is a death metal anthem.
A classic album exceeding death metal genre limitations........1999-11-11
German art-metal band Morgoth had an exceptional career spanning the early 90's euro-death metal scene and ending in a 1997 confused attempt at commerciality. But at the height of their career, the classic ODIUM was recorded with crystalline precision at Woodhouse studios in Germany. It deserves a place among albums like Slayer's South of Heaven and Metallica's Master of Puppets. Conceptual in nature, exquisite in production and delivery, Odium belongs in any record collection that would include intelligent, artistic, and powerfully extreme metal music.
Although the vocal delivery may keep sensitive listeners away (imagine a death-infused Lemmy), the progressive chugging of the guitars and flawless rhythm section keeps the arrangements tight as industrial, and coldly emotional. There is enough brutality on Odium to satisfy any headbanger, and enough art, ambition, and melody to keep the more demanding listener enthralled. One of the single best albums in metal's history.

Yet another epic keyboard-laden black metal band.......2003-09-14
This album is solid the whole way through, and if you are a huge fan of lesser-known keyboardy bands like Negura Bunget, Celestia, Nokturnal Mortem, and Blood Stained Dusk; this is another album you're sure to lap up and love. For others, it will be hated for not being true. For people who judge music based on album covers, it's like Limbonic Art, because it's the same cover artist. For those who listen to music for creativity and a sense of wonder at comtemplative dark majesty, it certainly lacks much creativity, but it also has a definite strain of majestic epic starry black metal that while formulaeic, cannot be passed over without some token praise. At least there's no silly gothic poetry or bad female falsettos. It's decent. It's epic black metal to be sure. But that's all. It's not all that great as epic black metal bands go.
Great CD, too bad the band broke up........2000-08-21
The Sad Realm of the Stars is the only album released by the now nonexistent band Odium. And what a great album it is. 9 tracks of melodic, keyboard rich black metal played viciously by these Norwegian gods of extreme metal. The best song is probably "Towards the Forest Horizon", a beautiful piece of epic black metal. Though, the other songs are also very well written and played. If you are into Black Metal, especially the melodic aspect of this, pick this CD up NOW! (Former Odium members are now playing in the band Myrkskog.)

Spirited music.......2005-10-01
-- Carmina Burana --
Carmina Burana is a large German manuscript from which Carl Orff drew his famous modern setting.
The manuscript was discovered in a Benedictine monastery in the mid-19th century in Bavaria, and subsequently named Carmina Burana. It is very extensive, with lyrics from Occitania, France, England, Scotland, Catalonia, Castile, Germany and beyond. Many texts are in Latin. However, the majority of the texts do not include melodies (which is not uncommon for compositions of the time). These have to be recreated based on the structure of texts or other cues (such as pitch), or other markers alluding to well-known medieval melodies from other sources.
The include of Gregorian chant, and other musical styles such as the music of Troubadours, Trouveres, and Minnesingers can be heard distinctly. In that tradition, many of these songs are far from sacred texts, but rather can be ribald and scathing at times in their wit toward the world in which they were composed. Yet there are also graceful love songs and other wonderful pieces here, too.
-- This performance --
This performance features Hans Breitschopf (countertenor), René Clemencic (recorders, flute, cornet, shepherd's flute, organ), Richard Erig (shawm, bombarde), Andràs Kécskès (lute, rubebe, psaltery), Pedro Liendo (baritone), Anne Osnowycz (buche), Frantisek Pik (cornet, courbe, mandolin), Spiros Rantos (vielles, rabab), Walter Schiefer (percussion), Zeger Vandersteene (countertenor, percussion), and René Zosso (hurdy-gurdy, chant).
According to director Clemencic, this is not intended to be a definitive version of the Carmina Burana, but rather a faithful rendering of the text received. It is fun, lively, and full of spirit. Originally recorded for vinyl in 1974, the transfer to disc has been expertly achieved.
-- Clemencic Consort --
René Clemencic is the founding director of one of the best early music groups, the Clemencic Consort. Clemencic, a native of Vienna, was born in 1928. He studied philosophy and musicology in both Vienna and Paris. During this time he also studied early instruments such as the recorder and harpsichord; in addition, he learned early music performance, music theory and composition. Clemencic and the Clemencic Consort have won numerous international awards, such as the Diapason d'Or, Edison, Grand Prix du Disque, and Prix Cecilia.
One of the drawbacks of discs by the Clemencic Consort is that they rarely give any details about the performers, the group itself or the director. This is unfortunate, given the nature of the Consort, which can vary from as few as two to as many as fifty performers, depending upon the requirements of the music at hand.
Carmina Burana (Original Version).......2002-09-12
As the title implies, this is not the Orff work, but what he based it on: some of the oldest written Western music in existance. Sheets of these pieces were found to make up binders for old books discovered around two hundred years ago. If you like Medieval/Early music or are a fan of the Brit-folk Fairport/Steeleye/Pentangle/Richard Thompson school, this is great source material. Great source material for any rounded music collection, for that matter..... And played on antique instruments. There is a piece on the third disc played with an ensemble of hurdy-gurdys that makes Einsturzende Neubauten sound like Ricky Martin--and this is from about 1000 years ago!
Docked one star for limited liner notes--I want to know what the instruments are--en Anglais si vous play! And it'd be nice to know who played what, cut by cut.

Past, present, and future tense........2006-03-02
To understand Carl Orff, you have to know both where he was coming from (academia, with a strong interest in pre-classical European music and Classical Greek music, as well as a strong to desire to reduce the perhaps overly complex music of Wagner and Mahler to a simpler mode), and where he was leading to. Carmina Burana only seems an anomaly if you don't see it in context.
This disc ranges from late 13th century compositions to late 20th century compositions, directed by one of the pioneers of the Ancient Music movement. Orff's influence is heard in how we INTERPRET ancient music, and in how some contemporary composers' (Arvo Part and even Ligeti) own work shows that influence.
Konrad Ruhland does an excellent job of tying the past to the future, using Carl Orff as the bow.

I bought this CD with hopes that it would as bright and hopefully better then Carmina Burana... With much disappointment I have listened to this CD... It is a collection of Church Choir Music... It doesn't have the spunk or energy of Carmina Burana...

Customer Reviews:
Music of the Middle Ages Reborn.......2001-02-28
I had the pleasure to see Ensemble Anonymus at my University while I was an undergraduate of Music. I have always been a fan of ancient musics, especially from the middle ages. Knowing that, you now know my dilemma. Historically acurate and well played music from this period is difficult to come by. Even when you find something done in the style, it is typically on modern instruments with modern modes and then the music lacks credibility.
Ensemble Anonymus, however, performed brilliantly on historically accurate instruments with a full and rich sound that I had never heard before. For the first time I was hearing what this music was truly meant to sound like. None of the pieces sounded alike, though each was true to its style. From uplifting and spirited tunes like 'Danse' to the solemn and heartfelt 'Sire Cuens, j'ai vielé' all the songs had a unique approach that could only have been captured by the great talent of this group.
After the concert I purchased this CD that I am listening to now, and was astonished how the same attention to detail, the spirit and energy I had heard at the concert was captured on this recording. Even the small sonances, such as the slight whisper of the bagpipe's bellows or a key being pressed were largely intact. The recording is extremely clean and warm as it should be.
I recommend this recording to anyone, especially those with an intrest in the Middle Ages and its artistic treasures.
