The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

Enjoying The Pleasures of K. Battle & C. Parkening.......2007-05-06

Whether you are very familiar with these two artists or have never heard either one, you will delight in this musical collaboration. Only a guitarist of Christopher Parkening's stature could be the ideal accompaniment to the perfection of Kathleen Battle's voice. The music ranges from selections by John Dowland to American spirituals, Bach/Gounod, Villa-Lobos, Granados and some Spanish folk songs. The result is a coherent, soothing and utterly delightful listening experience. You will revisit this album often, and always be glad that you have it. For fans of Kathleen Battle and Christopher Parkening, I think it is a must.

We always enjoyed seeing and hearing Battle in concerts, usually on the television and Parkening has been a favorite guitarist. To listen to these two fine artists in concert is a real treat.

Superb technique, emotionally flat, but enjoyable even so........2005-05-25

I can't imagine these songs being performed with any greater technical brilliance than they are by Parkening and Battle on this CD. Both are virtuosos, him in the guitar, her the voice. Their skill is particularly apparent in the Dowland songs, the "Ave Maria", and the Bachianas brasileiras no. 5 (for me, the high point of the recording), which are all in a formal style well suited to the talents of the performers.

I compare the Brazilian songs to the version recorded by Salli Terri with Laurindo Almeida in the late '50's on "Duets with Spanish Guitar", which I have listened to repeatedly since I first heard it in 1959. Battle's phrasing, enunciation, and vocal skill are far superior to Terri's, but Terri brought a level of emotion to her singing that Battle seems to lack. Where Battle's perfection enhances her superb performances of the Dowland and Villa-Lobos pieces, it seems to detract from her performance of the Brazilian folk pieces.

I find this to be true again in the spirituals - vocal perfection and control detracting from the "soul" required to bring out the "spiritual" feeling. Imagine these same pieces sung by Mahalia Jackson or Aretha Franklin and you'll understand my point.

Parkening's performance has the same quality - technical virtuosity, especially noticeable in his lute-like technique in the Dowland solo - but lacking in emotional depth.

The classical selections are highly recommended, the folk pieces a bit disappointing, but overall an enjoyable recording.

Fans, maybe, but I must say I'm not a huge fan of Kathleen Battle or opera or songs in different languages, either. My mom is, though. And through her I have heard Kathleen's best. And her very best (if you ask me) is one of the tracks ON THIS CD titled "Ain't that good news," even though it should be called "Ain'ta dat good news," since that is how its sung. It is a really good song (ask anybody) with a little surprise high-note at the end. If I were you I would (if not buy this CD right here and now) then go to [a book store] and see if their computers will let you hear "Ain't that good news" because that song is great.

A GEM FROM THE PRINCESS THEATRE . . . .......2005-09-07

I agree with Mr. Behrens that this recording is a "must" for anyone serious about the American musical theatre, but I found the whole thing a trifle boring. (I would have given it 3 stars, but I was worried about turning people off.) The performances are splendid, and the original orchestrations for 10 pieces are a delight to hear. Upon hearing the overture, you might think you're listening to a superb digital restoration of an early 1900's recording. It's a gas.

Mr. Behrens states that the score contains neither a hit nor a miss and is an "improvement on the bubbleheaded competition," but the operettas of Sigmund Romberg, Rudolph Friml, Victor Herbert, et.al, were overflowing with far better songs than Jerome Kern would write for this or any other Princess Theatre Show. Many of the lyrics for "Eddie" are pretty inane, typical for the time, however. Kern wrote a much better score two years later for "Leave It to Jane" (1917), lyrics provided by long time collaborator P.G. Wodehouse. (A wonderful recording of the 1958 revival of "Jane" is available on AEI Records.) With Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, II, Jerome Kern wrote "Show Boat" in 1927, giving us the first truly great American musical. He also contributed some of Hollywood's most memorable songs, including "A Fine Romance," "The Way You Look Tonight," and "The Last Time I Saw Paris."

My fellow reviewer from Monterey Mass. hit the nail on the head. Though not as good as some of the "Princess Theater" shows to come ("Oh, Boy," "Oh, Lady, Lady," and the rest--this musical is quite an improvement on the bubbleheaded competition it had not only in its own time but long after it. It is also a relief from the "musical play" that replaced the musical comedy. Not a single hit song and not a single poor one in the whole show that was a pioneer of the great "integrated" shows to come, not the least of which would be Kern's own "Show Boat." This is a must for every serious collection of Broadway shows.

This is a 1915 show but it has more snap and charm than the current long melodramas that masquerade as entertainment

The only major Rodgers and Hammerstein show not to have had a major Broadway revival, South Pacific receives its first complete recording, capturing 107 minutes of classic songs as well as reprises and underscored dialogue. Given the thankless task of succeeding Mary Martin of the original Broadway cast is the wonderful Paige O'Hara (Disney's Beauty and the Beast, John McGlinn's Show Boat), full of sass and spunk as Nellie Forbush. Although this Emile De Becque, Justino Diaz, isn't actually a Frenchman (but hey, neither was Ezio Pinza), his accent is only a faint distraction from his rich voice. Filling out the cast are tenor Sean McDermott as Lt. Joe Cable and Pat Suzuki (Flower Drum Song) as Bloody Mary. It's a very good recording, and an easy choice for anyone who wants the complete score. The only drawback is that, unlike other JAY Masterworks Editions, this one doesn't include extra songs, such as "My Girl Back Home," a song cut from the original production but restored for the 1958 film. --David Horiuchi

Great complete recording.......2004-07-19

In reply to M.Clegg's contention with regards to the status of the stars of this great complete recording, I would like to point out that all the main leads, Justino Diaz (New York City Opera Production), Paige O'Hara (Australian production), Sean McDermott (The Pace Production - USA) and Pat Suzuki (Long Beach Light Opera Production) have all played their respective roles on stage in various productions. This is clearly listed in the booklet of the recording. On the contary, I find their interpretation to be vivid and compelling. A great recording.

Complete but not Perfect.......2004-07-16

As with the complete recordings of Guys and Dolls and The Pajama Game, this double CD brings together the full score including uncut dance-breaks and incidental music. The orchastrations are fantastic but, like the others in this series, the cast suffer due to the 'studio' nature of the recording. There is little of the vibrancy and excitment of a Broadway Cast Recording because the cast are only singing the roles and have probably never seen the script at all. This means that many of the performances, while technically good, are characterless.
Paige O'Hara, excellent as the voice of Disney's Belle, plays the part a little too twee - yes, I know Nellie is a hick but she goes too far in that direction. Justino Diaz, as Emile, has a good voice that does not cover the lack of a personality. The rest of the cast are equally too note-perfect.
The people who will find this recording the most useful will be people, like myself, who are performers. When performing in a production of South Pacific this CD was very useful, more for the not-available-anywhere-else material than anything else. The dance music and the incidental stuff is useful to rehearse with.
On the whole, a worthy CD for the completist but if you want a more character-driven recording, search out one from an actual stage performance.

Ah...the memories. I remember this musical with fondness because it was the first musical that I had the honor of playing in the pit band for. Out of all of the South Pacific soundtracks, I love this one the most because it includes every song in the score (I checked)!

This soundtrack captures the March 2001 ABC-TV production of South Pacific, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein's musical of passion, danger, and racial intolerance in the Pacific islands during World War II, based on James Michener's book. Somewhat ... mature for the role of Nellie Forbush (the spunky naval nurse made famous by Mary Martin in the original Broadway cast), Glenn Close proves an adequate singer in her renditions of "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" and "A Wonderful Guy."

In the men's roles, Rade Sherbedgia's voice lacks sufficient richness for Emile de Becque's ballads "Some Enchanted Evening" and "This Nearly Was Mine," while as Lt. Joe Cable, jazz-pianist-turned-crooner-turned-actor Harry Connick Jr. makes "Younger Than Springtime" suave rather than wide-eyed. Robert Pastorelli and Lori Tan Chinn are fine as Billis and Bloody Mary, respectively, and the grandly romantic score is mostly intact, missing "Happy Talk" but adding a bonus track of Connick and Close singing "My Girl Back Home," which was cut from the original production, restored for the 1958 film, and cut again for this production. If you enjoyed the television film, this might be a useful souvenir, but serious fans of the score can stick to the original Broadway cast or the complete two-disc recording from JAY. --David Horiuchi

Oh dear me!.......2006-12-07

South Pacific is my favorite musical, and always has been. I already have the original cast stage recording starring Mary Martin, but I wanted to add the original movie soundtrack starring Mitzi Gaynor, which is really my preferred version.

Unfortunately the Amazon affiliate I ordered from made a mistake and sent me this one instead, otherwise, based on poor reviews here, I would never have ordered it. So I though I would show an open mind and give it a spin anyway, but was sorely disappointed right from the get-go and had not even got halfway through the CD, before I was impelled to remove it from the disc drive. I then gritted my teeth and played it all the way through so that I could write a review.

The orchestration is weak, Glenn Close is mediocre as Nelly Forbush, and Harry Connick is really, really feeble in the lead role as Lt. Joe Cable. Quite honestly I did not realise what a weak singer he is until I heard this. I think maybe I could do as well. Rade Sherbedgia as Emile sounds like a second-rate attempt to mimic Maurice Chevalier, but without the charm.

The singing of Bali Hai (in which Juanita Hall's vocals are is so beautifully overdubbed by Muriel Smith in the movie version) was so-so, and to add insult to injury one of my favorite songs, Happy Talk, is omitted altogether.

I very rarely write such a negative review, but clearly if you want a good recording of South Pacific, either the movie soundtrack or the original cast albums are the way to go. I have also listened to the Reba McIntyre version, but in my opinion her whisky-and-cigarettes voicings are quite unsuited to the ingenue role of Nelly.

Perhaps I am a little harsh. After all this album contains plenty of enjoyable listening, but I am assuming that the point of reading reviews is to determine what is the best purchase, and the fact is that this is only a television soundtrack and that it is in competition with two of the most beloved of all stage and screen soundtrack recordings.

If you listened to this without knowing who the performers were, you would just think that it was a cheap cover version.

So even if copies of this are available so cheaply as to be almost free, it is probably worth while to fork out a few dollars more to get one of the definitive versions, parts of which are so beautiful they will bring tears to your eyes. I would get the movie soundtrack.

Mixed feelings.......2005-05-03

If you only want one version of "South Pacific", go for the Broadway cast recording. This one has its merits, but it falls short. Glenn Close handles her parts quite well and is the saving grace of this CD. Most other aspects of the recording are disappointing. The worst mistake, I think, was the inclusion of the altered, muted versions of several numbers, including the title theme.

Fascinating "introspective" take on SOUTH PACIFIC.......2004-02-08

The 1949 original Broadway cast is as definitive a recording of the original version as we'll ever likely get.

Though the stage show was one of Rodgers and Hammerstein's biggest hits, the script has not aged well. It is overlong and lacking in subtleness. The 1958 film, despite the beautiful scenery, is played woodenly.

So, in 2000, ABC TV and Glen Close produced a new TB film with a new script that weaves in most of the songs and situations of the original play while at the same time fleshing out the characters and making them more realistic.

Is the film a complete success? Well, no. For starters Glen Close is too old for the role of Nellie. She does act it well, however, and she sings with a characterful chest voice though I do detect some of her high notes might be dubbed. I have just re-watched the movie and don't find her all that objectionable. She sounds like she is having fun cutting loose in "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" and "A Wonderful guy."

Rade Sherbedgia certainly looks the part of DeBecque but since we are so used to hearing robust Bass singers in the role, his softly sung arias take a good deal of getting used to. Instead of an outpouring of emotion in "this Nearly Was Mine" he offers a more introspective take on the role. It's actually a good idea and might work better with a stronger singer.

Harry Connick Jr acts the part of Cable quite well and shades the characters different emotions. True he is more of New Orleans than Philadelphia, and like the others he tends to pull the big musical moments inward. It is most effective in the scene after he first makes love to Liat and croons a tender "Younger Than Springtime." This is everything that the sung ought to be... passionate, sexy and filled with wonder. This is a young man caught off guard by true love for the first time and Connick communicates that brilliantly. His "crooning" is not wildly out-of-place and certainly in keeping with the types of singers he would have heard at home. Some scenes later he performs a remarkably understated "Carefully Taught" having played the intense anger in the dialogue scene that precedes the song. The result is more a case of Cable realizing what he is saying than just spitting out an angry indictment. It may not be the way it was originally done, but you can't argue with its effectiveness.

In re-writing the screenplay, the scenes and songs were re-arranged from their traditional order. In this new version we see the first meeting of Nellie and Emile at an officers club dance, and the song "A Cockeyed Optimist" is used in this sequence to establish Nellie's outlook. It's part of her charm and clearly attracts DeBecque. The structure also allows the first two scenes of the musical to unfold simultaneously.

Anyone considering a Broadway revival of SOUTH PACIFIC might do well to examine the TV film for its style and construction. There might indeed be a way to make the story work for modern audiences, clearing away some of the hoary old jokes and developing character instead.

As for the CD, well if you do not like the performances in the film you won't like the CD, but if you like the new film you will enjoy the CD which is essentially a straight transfer from the film's soundtrack.

Not the most excellent version but not an abomination.......2004-01-04

The 2001 version of South Pacific with Glenn Close as Nellie Forbush, Harry Connick as Joe Cable and Rade Sherbedgia as Emile has some nice moments. The overture was expansive though not as much involving as the original. Glenn Close should dispense common notions that she cannot sing as she shows tremendous vocal pipes here. But as big a fan as I am of Glenn Close, I just think she is perfect for Norma Desmond songs (or a musical dedicated to the travails of Cruella De Ville). Nellie Forbush is not really her thing. "A Wonderful Guy" is a great song, but she sounded a bit old here where she should be an ingenue. "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair" was much much better. Rade Sherbedgia did not have Ezio Pinza's range but his speech-voice gives a touching vulnerability to Emile. Emile was sung by Ezio Pinza and even Jose Carreras, but Rade reminded me a lot of Jon Voight who did Stanley Kowalski in one "A Streetcar Named Desire" adaptation. They both imbued a touching fragility to a character without diminishing his machismo. I am also a fan of Harry Connick, but his cloudy jazz vocal did not really flesh out Joe Cable the way Mandy Patinkin did in the near-operatic version of it in 1987. Connick sounds uncomfortable singing songs with long vocal lines. Note his initially interesting take of "Younger Than Springtime" with righteous world-weariness, then listen how the song became more like a study in geriatric plea for the hand of a maiden in the end. He fared better in "You've Got To Be Taught", but he scored major points in the last song where he duetted with Glenn Close, called "The Girl Back Home" that was not in the original production (I think). Both complemented each other. Connick longing, Close appropriately ingenuous.

Bloody Mary and the one sho sang her did not make me forget Juanita Hall's or Sarah Vaughan's versions of "Bali Ha'i". Vaughan in particular gave an unsurpassable version of "Happy Talk" in the 1987 recording.

Nice album, just the same, but I guess, people should be advised to get the Ezio Pinza-Mary Martin album or the Rosanno Brazzi-Mary Martin album or even the Kiri Te Kanawa-Jose Carreras version first before this.

Some shows DO NOT need a revival or a TV version!.......2003-11-11

Whoever cast Glenn Close as Nellie Forbush owes her a huge apology because it was nothing short of an act of cruelty. She was wrong, wrong, wrong for the part and she knew it--it shows in her wooden and totally unbelievable performance. This Rodgers and Hammerstein masterpiece did not need a shoddy made-for-TV version--the original movie was perfect and did not need anyone to try and duplicate the magic of it. Most of the soul was sucked out of it in this crappy TV production and equally yucky soundtrack. What an abomination. That whirring sound is Richard and Oscar spinning in their graves.

A very nice SACD.......2004-06-09

This is a very enjoyable album. The sound quality is absolutely amazing! The first time I heard the clarinet solo on track #2, my jaw dropped at the amazing sound quality.

The soloists on the album include John Pizzareli, and the Manhattan Transfer. They are great musicians that bring a bit of variety to this album.

There is only one bad thing that I could say about this album is pretty minor. The hybrid SACD is supposed to be able to play on all CD players. I have had problems playing this on regular CD players.

How could one not wish for more?.......2003-08-30

I love and hate this cd. I love it because it thrills whom ever listens to it with the beautiful but neglected works of Arthur Sullivan that were not written in partnership with W.S. Gilbert. The recording and the quality of the preformances are fantastic. I especially loved 'The Emerald Isle' and 'The Beauty Stone'. It filled me with the desire to consume these operas en total. Unfortunatly this is also the reason I hate it. It is quite difficult to find complete recordings of these operas (Besides the dreadull Pearl Label ones). From just a few scraps of the Emerald Isle I am in love with it, but seemingly doomed to either subpar recordings of nothing at all...woe to me!

An excellent but flawed disc.......2003-01-08

This is in many ways an excellent and very welcome addition to the growing range of recordings of Sullivan's "non-G" music. The items selected are enjoyable and are well-sung and well-performed. However, the disc is not generously filled. While this may well have been unavoidable, what is not is the decision to occupy a significant chunk of the limited time available with selections from "The Martyr of Antioch". While I personally am an admirer of this sacred music drama, it is just that, and from 1880 too. The fact that it was semi-staged for a few performances in the 1890s no more makes it an 1890s opera than (eg) a modern concert performance of "Ivanhoe" would turn the latter into a 21st century cantata! The inclusion of the "Martyr" items is all the more annoying in view of the lack of coverage of some bona fide 1890s operas, notably "The Rose of Persia". So one star off for poor judgement in this respect - but still a very worthwhile disc for Sullivanians!

Any Arthur Sullivan fan MUST buy this CD.......2000-02-22

Many people claim that outside his partnership with librettist Sir William Gilbert, Sir Arthur Sullivan was unable to write music that could be remembered. This recording has precisely the goal of making us remember what a truly marvellous composer Sullivan really was. All the recordings on this CD are excerpts from Sullivan "operas" written without Gilbert's involvement. Even though most of these pieces (apart from "Ho! Jolly Jenkin!") are now completely forgotten, hidden behind the success of the Savoy Operas, such as Sullivan's "Mikado" or "HMS Pinafore", written in collaboration with Gilbert, they deserve more recognition.

All pieces are sung by recognized Gilbert and Sullivan singers, and their professionalism is at its usual level.

The two flaws that I can find to this album are: 1) It is too short (approximatively 50 minutes) but I suspect it was the result of lack of funds. 2) The booklet makes no mention whatsoever of Gilbert, even though his influence on Sullivan's musical career was essential. Gilbert had collaborated on the adaptation of "The Martyr of Antioch", but is not even mentioned. Furthermore, Sullivan might have never considered operetta (or light opera) as an adequate musical genre (for Sullivan, in his early years, wanted to achieve fame as a "serious" composer) had it not been for the success of "Trial by Jury" and other successful operettas all written during his partnership with Gilbert.

But these are just mere details. The music is impeccable, so I encourage everyone, especially all the Savoyards out there who only know Sullivan's music through his collaboration with Gilbert, to buy this CD.

An excellent recording, long overdue.......1999-03-11

This CD spotlights Sullivan's non-Gilbert works, and, as such, is full of surprises. Still, the producers seemed to have decided to put in as much material that is "Sullivanesque" as possible. "Ho jolly jenkin" from Ivanhoe is probably the most familiar, and perhaps should have been replaced by something else from the same work. The biggest failing is the neglect of The Rose of Persia in favor of The Emerald Isle. The selections from The Emerald Isle that appear on this recording are not even Sullivan's arrangements, since he died before he finished it. Besides, The Rose of Persia is much better, both as drama and as music. The biggest surprises are "The gay hussar" from The Chieftain and the two selections from The Martyr of Antioch. The madrigal from Haddon Hall is performed a little too slow. The pace of "The sun's in the sky" may be too brisk for those familiar with earlier recordings, but I like it. "Ride on" (The Beauty Stone) is perhaps the most uncharacteristic selection. The soloists are okay, though the tenor creaks once or twice. All in all, a recording not to be missed by any G&S fan. Maybe the next time a recording like this is undertaken, we'll get an entire work -- how long must we wait to hear The Martyr of Antioch in its entirety in a modern recording?! (And yes, I know The Rose of Persia is due out this year . . . .)

A ground-breaking release.......1999-02-21

This is the recording which finally proves that Sullivan's lesser-known operas should be rated more highly than they are. There are no poor excerpts on this recording, but those that particularly stand out are When the Budding Bloom of May (Haddon Hall), both items from The Beauty Stone and the Finale from The Emerald Isle. Those people who think that Sullivan was not much of a composer away from Gilbert should be pleasantly surprised. Hopefully, this recording will prove successful enough to encourage some enterprising recording company to release complete professional recordings of Sullivan's unjustly neglected works.

If you are looking for the soulfull melodic or jubilation of traditional American Negro spirituals, this is not it. But it is masterful musicianship.

Great opera, not spiritual style I thought title suggested........2005-09-08

This is a very good classical collection. The rating would have been higher if the description had suggested the actual style of the music. I am giving it 3 stars because this is a very good OPERA style collection - not the spiritual style I was hoping for. Given the title and simple instruments, I thought it would be different - more relaxed. I wish a sample of the music had been available. If you want spirituals sung in an OPERA style you will love this. She is an amazing talent.

A Glorious Burgeoning Diva!.......2005-05-07

Though this particular selection of songs may not be one the recital lover would choose, MOSAIC introduces to the recording audience the magnificent voice of Angela M. Brown, a gifted singer whose career has been nurtured by appearances with small opera companies until her highly successful Metropolitan Opera debut in 'Aida' last year. Now this intelligent singer is currently replacing the indomitable Jessye Norman in a Detroit Opera premiere and even in that vulnerable position of comparison she is making a triumphant statement.

MOSAIC is pleasant enough recital of African American Spirituals with sensitive piano and guitar accompaniment. But it is in the few unaccompanied songs that the splendor of this very large voice with a seemingly bottomless register is best displayed. Brown has a glowing top as well as a lush bottom in her register and her attention to the control of the cascade of sound is simply thrilling. Brown knows this repertoire well and is convincing in her delivery of not only the message but the depth of emotion of each song.

Hopefully a recording of songs and arias will follow soon, especially as her opera reputation grows. But for now, MOSAIC is a fine introduction to a voice whose destiny seems assured. Grady Harp, May 05

Classical music with heart and soul.......2005-03-01

Daniel Alexander Payne, sixth bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church worked tirelessly to purge emotionalism from African American modes of worship, and derided spirituals as "corn field ditties." Starting with the Fisk Jubilee Singers and into current century, composers such as Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Moses Hogan and Joseph Joubert have sought new, classical interpretations of these timeless, soulful songs.

I must confess, I've never been a big fan of classicised spirituals. Spirituals ARE emotional, expressions of unbearable pain, of longing, of optimism and ultimate belief in salvation. To strip them of that by prettying them up is to deny their very reason for being.

But having said all that: I absolutely loved MOSAIC! Angela Brown does not let her classical training get in the way of putting a song over with heart and soul. She obviously loves these songs, and her rich voice moved me to tears on several occasions. The instrumental accompaniments (Joseph Joubert on piano, Tyron Cooper on guitar) are gorgeously subtle and supportive.

The sound quality of this disc is superb, a fitting tribute to the many African American composers represented here. Highly recommended!

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra here offer a veritable tour of the swing era. Kunzel has been conducting the orchestra since its formation in 1977. The set includes many of swing's cornerstone numbers, of course including Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," which is also celebrated as the source of the genre's name. The music flourished in the '30s and '40s, popularized by composers and bandleaders such as Count Basie, Glenn Miller, and the Dorsey brothers. To help realize this project, a number of vocalists were enlisted, all of whom have current resumes rich with forays into the swing era: the Manhattan Transfer, John Pizzarelli, and Janis Siegel (who's also a member of the aforementioned vocal quartet). From soaring group vocals on such numbers as "Skyliner" to straight-ahead instrumental grooves as on Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton's "Flying Home," this 14-song set celebrates the swing era by making it sound fresh today. --David Greenberger

Disappointing Vocals.......2003-08-21

The orchestral approach to swing used on this recording unfortunately makes this date sound anemic. The swing band sound that is in integral part of this song list is either missing or meagerly represented among the orchestral arrangements and the hollow sounding concert hall acoustics. Worst of all, the Manhattan Transfer are mixed down so far that they almost sound like they don't get their own mikes. For anyone who loves MT as much as I do, this recording is a sadly wasted opportunity. Very disappointing. They deserve so much better.
