The Electric Light Orchestra were one of the biggest and most successful bands of the late 1970s, producing a massive string of hit singles and albums that almost any other band would envy. Their works have been cited as influences by such hip acts as Grandaddy and Super Furry Animals. Their frontman and leader Jeff Lynne has been the producer of choice for people like Paul McCartney, Tom Petty and George Harrison. From "Evil Woman", "Don't Bring Me Down" and "Mr Blue Sky" to "Livin' Thing" and "Hold On Tight", there are few duds amongst these 20 remastered tracks. ELO produced some of the biggest and best singles in rock & roll's history, and All Over The World: The Very Best Of ELO is an excellent reintroduction to this great band. Hopefully, this also signals the beginning of a long-overdue revival and re-evaluation. --Robert Burrow

NOT A BAD GREATEST HITS COMPILATION ALBUM ON ONE CD........2007-07-07
I will be writing a review on the legendary greatest hits compilation album entitled "THE VERY BEST OF ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA (ELO), ALL OVER THE WORLD" by one of Rock's all-time greatest bands ever. I give you one of Britain's pride and joy's and one of Birmingham, England's favorite sons, E-L-E-C-T-R-I-C L-I-G-H-T O-R-C-H-E-S-T-R-A! This legendary compilation album was originally released in 2005 on Compact Disc on the Epic / Legacy Records label which is manufactured and distributed by Epic Records, a division of Sony BMG Music Entertainment Ltd. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.
ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA (ELO) will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording some of Rock's all-time greatest sacred anthems ever. When guitarist Jeff Lynne met up and joined forces with lead vocalist and frontman Roy Wood, bassist Rick Price and drummer Bev Bevan, ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA would be born with the same traditional music sound values like that of ELO'S most favorite band and idol's, THE BEATLES. When ELO was formed in 1970, Jeff Lynne made it perfectly clear that the band's intentions were to pick up where THE BEATLES classic anthem "I Am The Walrus" left off. ELO composed and recorded some great legendary hit songs and albums through the years during the period of 1973 to 2001. Listening to all of their hit songs, it is clearly evident in which you can actually feel THE BEATLES influence in this legendary band. In my opinion, had THE BEATLES stayed together from 1970 to 2001, ELO would have sounded in comparison just like THE FAB FOUR. And if that wasn't enough, ELO were actually one of the early pioneers to present their legendary concert performances with their rare breathtaking and explosive vibrant light and laser displays along with their massive flying saucer stage sets. Which now brings me to the legendary greatest hits compilation album I'm about to review for all of you today. "THE VERY BEST OF ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA (ELO), ALL OVER THE WORLD" chronicles and highlights the majority of ELO'S greatest hit songs from the 1973 to 2001 period. In my opinion, this legendary compilation album is without a doubt, a true testament of the brilliance and musical creativity of four masterminded genius'. This legendary compilation album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time. This album is the tales in the life and world of ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, their music is their story that speaks for itself.
It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of ELO to speak for itself and back it up musically as it was originally truly intended to be heard and listened to. "THE VERY BEST OF ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, ALL OVER THE WORLD" from 2005 begins with the incredible upbeat Rocker "Mr. Blue Sky," the forever ELO stamped trademark Rocker, "Evil Woman," the forever blistering ELO stamped trademark Rocker, "Don't Bring Me Down," this legendary anthem is a perfect example of how beautifully and harmoniously classical orchestrated music blends with Rock n' Roll as THE BEATLES forever proved it, "Sweet Talkin' Woman," the breathtaking orchestrated Hard Rocker "Shine A Little Love," the amazing synthesized and orchestrated Rocker "Turn To Stone," the breakthrough synthesized and orchestrated mild Rocker "The Diary Of Horace Wimp," the beautifully slow/medium acoustic Rocker "Confusion," the groundbreaking synthesized Rocker with the feelings and sounds bringing back the true spirit of the fifties, "Hold On Tight," the beautifully arranged orchestrated Rocker "Livin' Thing," the beautifully slow mindblowing sounds and special effects mild Rocker, "Telephone Line," the unforgettable orchestrated ans synthesized Rock anthem "All Over The World," the beautifully slow sounding orchestrated synthesized Rocker "Wild West Hero," the slow and smooth orchestrated Rocker "Showdown," the a*s kicking ELO stamped trademark orchestrated Hard Rocker "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle," the original genuine Rockin' version that was also recorded by OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN, "Xanadu," the slow teaser erupting into a a*s kicking, explosive Hard orchestrated Rocker, "Rockaria," the beautifully slow and soothing orchestrated mild Rocker, "Strange Magic," the merciless synthesized Hard Rocker "Alright" and the fast and energetic synthesized Rocker "Rock And Roll Is King." May I also add that the music track recording arrangements on all of these great hit songs were layed down perfectly. I would also like to commend ELO on their most beautiful harmony vocals. Their singing sounded so refreshing and heavenly.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary greatest hits compilation album for everyone of all ages to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. If you love THE BEATLES, you will love this album. This priceless gem has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. There are also many other ELO greatest hits compilation albums that you might want to check out and research further into before you make your final decision. In doing this, you will have found the best album that is right for you and suits your music tastes and needs. When this is accomplished, you will have also taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own personal ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA music collection. You can do all of your researches and album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store.
In closing, despite changing numerous band personnel in the late 70's and throughout the 80's, ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA would still successfully continue in delighting their fans with their legendary albums and concert tours to highly critically acclaim for many more years up to the very day when the band officially disbanded in 1988. Prior to 1988, from 1987 onwards, Jeff Lynne has become one of the world's most sought after in-demand songwriter and producer, successfully collaborating and producing with legendary artists as well as personal friends such as the late great George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, the late great Roy Orbison, Del Shannon, Tom Petty and Brian Wilson. Lynne was also a member of the legendary Grammy-award winning band THE TRAVELING WILBURIES. It seems to me that Jeff Lynne keeps himself pretty busy and active in the music world. With all of this in mind, ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA has forever left their place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and their many contributions, accomplishments and achievements will never be forgotten or denied. So here's to you Jeff, Roy, Rick and Bev. Thanks for the great memories and moments. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA FOREVER! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
A GREAT ALBUM.......2007-06-28
THIS IS AN ALBUM NAMED "OUT OF THE BLUE." IT'S A GREAT ALBUM. YOU MUST GET IT . IT'S FANTASTIC! "STARLIGHT" AND "MR BLUE SKY" ARE GREAT SONGS, AND "SWEET TALKING WOMAN" IS SUPER TOO. HEY WHAT ABOUT "TURN TO STONE" AND "ITS OVER?" THEY'RE AWESOME ALSO.
I LIKE THE WEIRD SOUNDS AT THE BEGINNING OF "STARLIGHT" AND "SUMMER AND LIGHTNING." ALSO, "STARLIGHT" HAS A GREAT LINE THAT SAYS 'STARLIGHT, YOUR EYES ARE LOOKING DOWN ON ME.' "JUNGLE" IS ALSO A PRETTY GOOD SONG.
SEE YOU SOON. BYEBYE.
Quit.......2007-05-27
crying about the couple or three songs this album doesn't contain for ***** sake its a single cd. would you like them to include the whole ELO library? heres a thought stop being so cheap and go buy a another set which includes the songs that you cant live without or better yet put the cd in play it and be happy. That being said this is a very good collection. Thank You.
Greatest hits is a hit.......2007-03-30
If you love ELO then you will love this compilation.
A NICE COLLECTION OF ELO HITS, I WISH THERE COULD HAVE BEEN SOME ODD HITS FOR A CHANGE................2007-01-16
Nice overseen remastering job by Jeff Lynn. With the exception of the new version of "Xanadu"(I wish it was the 1980 version with Olivia Newton John), the song list is pretty nice. This sampling of ELO hits is a great way for a new ELO fan to start an ELO collection. Nice linear notes by Jeff. Again as with all the ELO greatest hits and ELO box sets there are favorite songs missing. Best bet by all the Epic /Legacy remastered ELO cd releases, but if you just want one disc full of hits this disc is a nice edition to have. I wish "Look At Me Now", "Dreaming Of 4000" and a few more ELO oddities were on this collection I know these are two odd songs that are not known as ELO greatest hits material but it would have added a little different curriculum to this latest ELO greatest hits release. I still enjoyed the listen it brought brought back alot of memories. While I listened to this ELO greatest hits collection cd, as usual I cracked an ELO smile. Recommended listening...............

No matter whether or not you think Sylvester Stallone should have gone back to the Rocky trough one more time, this soundtrack is fun because it's basically a collection of music from all the past movies in the saga, ending with Three 6 Mafia's rap contribution to Rocky Balboa, "It's a Fight." The CD starts off with Bill Conti's "Gonna Fly Now (Theme from Rocky)," which remains so totally awesome that we can only bow to its 1970s brilliance; a 2006 remix tagged on at the end doesn't improve on it. Oddly, the sequencing isn't chronological, maybe so the two best-known tracks--the original theme and Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger," from Rocky III--could start off the CD with a one-two punch. But that also means that we zig-zag back and forth in the Rocky saga. James Brown's "Living in America" (from Rocky IV) has aged rather well, but the compilers realized Bill Conti's proto-disco score for the first installment still fares the best, and so five tracks are pulled from it (compared to just one from Rocky V). That old warhorse's still got some juice. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Another KO for Rocky Balboa.......2007-07-29
This CD is a collection of the best loved tunes from all the Rocky movies, with some memorable instrumentals thrown in. Certain tunes like "Mickey" and "Alone in the Ring" will be recognizable in the latest Rocky Balboa movie, and one that has been in all 6 movies "Take you back," is a favorite of mine (and Sylvester's too, I think!) There are even snippets of voice dialogue from the movies to introduce some of the songs, which is a nice touch.
Pure Rocky!!.......2007-06-15
What a great selection of songs from the Rocky movies. Both upbeat and slow, I love it.
Excellent!.......2007-05-22
The film "Rocky Balboa" did what "Rocky V" tried but failed to do; namely, wrap up the series in a positive way that left longtime fans satisfied. The same can be said for the soundtrack, which is an excellent combination of Bill Conti's original scores and the original artist rock tracks from Rocky III and IV. "Gonna Fly Now" still sounds great after all these years, as does "Redemption", the terrific theme of "Rocky II" which is a bit overlooked. "Going the Distance" is the perfect boxing theme, as it is both dramatic and triumphant. Softer tracks like "Adrian" and "Mickey" are appropriate because they show the other side of Rocky's character as someone who cared deeply about those who were closest to him. The original rock songs sound great too, and will bring back many fond memories from the films: "Eye of the Tiger", "No Easy Way Out", "Heart's On Fire", "Burning Heart" and "Living in America" all sound as fresh and lively as they did in the 1980's. Many probably don't like the inclusion of 36 Mafia's "It's a Fight", but I don't mind it too much; it was the entrance theme for Mason Dixon, after all, and it does accurately portray his self-confident image.
To be sure, this soundtrack is not perfect: there doesn't seem to be much justification for "Can't Stop the Fire" from Rocky V, though I suppose the producers felt that there should be at least one song from that film. The remix of "Gonna Fly Now", while not bad, sounds as if they tried to make it too modern, and that misses the point; what makes the original version so great is that it still sounds so good 30 years later.
Overall, this is an excellent disc, especially for a fan like me who came in relatively late ("Rocky Balboa" was actually the first Rocky film I saw, and I loved it so much I rented the first five!) It would have been nice if they had replaced "Can't Stop the Fire" and "Fanfare" with some better tracks, but that is a small gripe for an otherwise excellent collection of music.
My dear old boy.......2007-05-07
You made me dream another time, Sly.
Will you try again?
Francesco
A great once-over of the Rocky soundtracks.......2007-02-22
Despite some questionable choices (inclusions as well as exclusions), this CD is a fantastic collection of music from the six-part movie series. The music sounds uniformly great and the sequencing, though not chronological, works well. It is great to listen to while exercising, providing an extra jolt of energy (especially whenever the classic fanfare kicks in).
All of the classic Bill Conti themes are included, as are all the hit singles. I must say though, it is CRIMINAL that Frank Stallone's "Take You Back" was left off. This song is one of the most important in the entire series (I would argue third after "Gonna Fly Now" and "Eye of the Tiger"). Of the several versions featured throughout the series, I can't imagine why either the original (from the first "Rocky") or the latest (featured in "Rocky Balboa") was not included.
Also MIA is the song "Measure of a Man" by Elton John, which played during the closing-credits of "Rocky V." If only that particular movie had been a hit, this song almost certainly would have received an Oscar nomination. Considering that only one selection was taken from the "Rocky V" soundtrack, the execrable "Can't Stop the Fire" (a horrible dance track featuring a few synthesized riffs from Conti's themes), it is odd this song wasn't chosen. Maybe it was too expensive to pay Elton John's royalties.
Among the longest tracks on the CD is Bill Conti's "Overture," which seems unnecessary because all the themes contained within that piece are represented elsewhere on the disc. Excluded from the album is any of Vince DiCola's synth score from "Rocky IV". "War/Fanfare From Rocky" and "Training Montage" could have both been used instead of "Overture" without much effect on the CD's overall running time. Clearly, the compilers favored Bill Conti's scores - and rightly so - but those were strong pieces from DiCola and would have provided more variety.
At the risk of too many complaints, I also take issue with the remix version of "Gonna Fly Now." Given the various ommissions I've mentioned, it seems like a waste to have this at the end. I thought it was kind of cool the first time I heard it, but I would have rather had the "Rocky Balboa" version of "Gonna Fly Now" conclude the CD (which would have been a nice bookend with the 1976 version opening the disc).
With all that said, it is hard to quibble with the vast majority of the CD. The music composed by Bill Conti is some of the greatest soundtrack music ever, instantly evoking the indelible scenes from the films. Most of the vocal songs were big hits, and while they are dated (almost all of them are from the '80s) they still pack a strong nostalgic punch -- well, with the exception of "It's a Fight" by Oscar winners Three 6 Mafia, which is new, and the sole track from "Rocky Balboa." That song is particularly out of place, but at least it represents the most recent Rocky movie. Better it than an MC Hammer song from "Rocky V."
The dialogue clips are a nice addition, though I do agree with another reviewer that it was not a good choice to have one of those clips overlap the track "Going the Distance" (though I believe that is the only instance of dialogue interfering with music).
To conclude, this CD is an ideal way to own the "greatest hits" of the Rocky series without shelling out for 5 pervious soundtrack releases (and avoid any repetition of tracks in the process).

A memorable compilation of unforgettable soundtracks!.......2007-04-07
The inspired melodic vein of Ennio Morricone is simply out of this world. He possesses that coveted gift of diving into the core of every score with such depth of feeling and whole understanding of the material, without concessions of sentimental effects. Acquire it and convince by yourself. He is among the great composers of the genre of easy to listen music.
Brilliant Composer.......2007-03-31
Love this composer. The music draws out emotion. If you love movie music, this is definitely a must have. My kids-boys love it!
The Good, Bad & Ugly .......2007-03-29
I recently learned that Ennio Morricone had written some songs that I dearly loved. However, when I purchased the CD, I thought the music was grainy - like it was recorded off of an old soundtrack. I have heard better renditions.
Generally excellent except..........2007-03-22
I was very happy to finally find this compilation but I was truly disappointed to find out that the second track "for a few dollars more" was not the original "whistled" version that I grew up loving. Instead they chose to put an orchestral version. I do not know how they, at Virgin Records, let that happen, it seems an invitation to buy another disc. The rest of the tracks are the really great music from Morricone that we are used to listen.
high expectations fulfilled.......2007-01-17
When I ordered this product it was not available in the States, so I was pleased to find it shipped from the UK. Very worth the bit of extra postage. I played it constantly for the first week I had it. Am now playing it just once per week, but still find the music and arrangements inspired, inspiring and way above the normal selections one finds of Morricone in collections. Top quality all the way.

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

Waste of money.......2006-01-12
Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

Great Music Compilation.......2005-08-15
This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.
If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11
Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.
A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23
In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.
A great compilation.......2005-02-09
This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

Released in 1992 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the release of Dr. No, this two-disc set still stands as the ultimate Bond music collection. Disc one includes all of the hit songs from the Bond films, including Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger," Tom Jones's "Thunderball," Paul McCartney & Wings' "Live & Let Die" and Sheena Easton's "For Your Eyes Only." Disc two includes Louis Armstrong's lovely "We Have All the Time in the World," as well as a nice collection of rarities (Anthony Newley's demo of "Goldfinger"), lesser-known orchestral cuts from Goldfinger and Thunderball, and radio ads for You Only Live Twice, Thunderball, and Live & Let Die. The perfect accompaniment for a martini built for two. Shaken not stirred, of course! --Dan Epstein

007 forever and ever.......2007-05-13
whether played by Sean CONNERY, Roger MOORE, George LAZENBY, Timothy DALTON, Pierce BROSNAN, Daniel CRAIG, or even by David NIVEN in the sixsties comedy 007 CASINO' ROYALE (1967), James BOND is the greatest spy ever!!! So it's his music!!!!
The Best of James Bond 30th Anniversary.......2007-02-11
Wonderful music, an enjoyment for any James Bond fan.
Good effort..........2007-02-09
The 1st cd is the most enjoyable (vocal track's)...the 2nd start's out listenable and then seem's to bog down with very repetative formula's.
A CD No James Bond Fan Should Be Without........2007-01-13
As someone who has been a huge James Bond since before he could walk, you can bet I love every aspect of the films, including the music. Many of the theme songs to the films are classics, while the ones that have slipped under the radar remain awesome underrated numbers.
In 1992, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of 1962's "Dr. No", the 2 cd "The Best Of James Bond" was released. Itr included all the theme songs for the movies from 1962's "Dr. No" up to 1989's "License To Kill", as well as a second disc of rarities.
This is an excellent compilation that all 007 fans must have in their collection. You get all the classic Bond themes, such as Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger", Paul McCartney & Wings' "Live And Let Die", Carly Simon's "Nobody Does It Better", Sheena Easton's "For Your Eyes Only", and Duran Duran'a "A View To A Kill", as well as some lesser heard but equally great songs, such as Nancy Sinatra's luscious theme for "You Only Live Twice", Bassey's sexy rendering of "Diamonds Are Forever" and her mysterious, sweet "Moonraker", Lulu's thrilling "The Man With The Golden Gun", Rita Coolidge's glorious "All Time High", and a-ha's excellent "The Living Daylights". There are a few rough spots (Tom Jones' over the top "Thunderball" and Gladys Knight's awful "License To Kill"), but other than that, it's a nearly flawless compilation.
The second disc is a great treat for hardcore Bond fans. For starters, you get several radio spots for "You Only Live Twice", "Thunderball" and "Live And Let Die", some great instrumental scores, two different recordings of the scrapped "Thunderball" theme song "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (sung by Dionne Warwick and Shirley Bassey, respectively), Anthony Newley's boring but coll to have early demo of "Goldfinger", and best of all, Louis Armstrong's absolutely beautiful "We Have All The Time In The World", one of the loveliest songs in music.
It's true that there were Bond films made after 1992 (five to be exact). But as far as their theme songs go, only Tina Turner's theme for "Goldeneye" and Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name" (from the recent "Casino Royale"), are worth having. My advice is to get this excellent two cd and download the 2 later numnbers. Then, you will truly have all the best of James Bond.
If you like the movies, you'll like the music.......2006-08-27
Bought this as a gift for my son who loves James Bond & has all the DVD's. He loved it.

The obvious centerpiece to this soundtrack is Madonna's hyperkinetic version of Don McLean's 1971 postmortem rock anthem "American Pie." Capturing the bittersweet intentions of the original, Madonna and producer William Orbit create a forlorn dreamscape of dance beats and floating electronica effects that serve to update the sentimental war horse. The entire soundtrack has a futuristic sheen. Thick washes of reverb, ethereal keyboards, and swooping tones create the illusion of space travel throughout. Previously released tunes deserving of headline status include Moby's unusually soulful "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad," which cleverly updates a classic '60s soul groove to modern effect. A highlight from Beth Orton's Central Reservation, "Stars All Seem to Weep," fits like a missing piece of the puzzle. Previously unreleased tracks from Christina Aguilera, Maverick recording artists Olive (who cover 10cc's "I'm Not in Love"), and Madonna's "Time Stood Still," another fruitful collaboration with William Orbit, round things out. --Rob O'Connor
Customer Reviews:
Boom Boom Ba is very sexy!.......2007-01-10
I bought this album for the cut "Boom Boom Ba". As far as I know it's not available anywhere else. The 5 stars are mostly for this cut.
Great CD. Very Ambient........2005-11-24
Very ambient. American Pie just has the best production values. The Moby song is excellent as are all the others except Christina Agularas, which sounds out of place in the midst of the other songs.
Not Bad.......2005-06-17
World beat, dance pop, moody electronica and dance floor shakers all come together for a fun and entertaining hour or so. And it's a damn sight better than the movie it came from, I can assure you of that. Even the slightly stiff and ham fisted cover of American Pie is forgivable, in light of the nice array of tracks from artists you have heard, and many ( well, most ) that you haven't. The best thing is this album really stands on its own, and doesn't need the awful movie it came from to prop it up.
Surprisingly Good..........2005-05-01
This is one of those cds that a lot of people will buy for one song and end up loving the rest of the album. The album seems to have a theme: sophistocated and symphnonic (but obscure) Euro-tronic music. Of course, the main track is Madonna's "American Pie", her performance of which is worthy to be compared to the original, but almost every other song is great too. "Boom Boom Ba" is addictive and catchy and excells as the album-opener. Things are enhanced when Moby enteres the scene with his soul-influenced, beautiful oddball "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad" and the two tracks by Olive and Beth Orton are very entertaining, whilst the interesting "Bongo Bong" gives you something you're very likely to NOT have heard: what sounds like one of the Chipmunks "rapping" which adds humor and life to the album, as does the delightfully bouncy (and catchy) track by Christina Aguilera. The album finishes peacefully with the Gabriel Yared track. But the very best song on the album and the one worth buying the album solely for is Madonna's stunning "Time Stood Still", a rollercoaster of emotional lyrics and sweeping strings and melodious electronica. Produced by William Orbit, the song is straight out of "Ray of Light", thoug for some ridiculous reason, the song was left off the album. Starting quietly, "Time Stood Still" snares your attention and before you know it, a beautiful, soaring climax that defies genre-boundaries is flooding your ears. Definitely worth the price of the album alone.
The reason, however, that this album only received 4 stars from me is the fault of the Christina Aguilera track, which, despite being a decent and fun song, seems to corrupt the musical theme and direction of the album. The other reason is the Solar Twins track, which eerily goes nowhere throughout the song and unnecessarily takes up time space. A song like it shouldn't have been on the album period, but it's followed by the equally mellow (without the eeriness) Gabriel Yared track, and by the time both songs are finished, the upbeat moments of the album seem like just a memory.
So, in conclusion, if you buy this just for the Madonna tracks, there are very good chances you will enjoy most of, if not all of, the rest of the album. And despite the two theme inconsistencies I just mentioned, I guess the more broad listener would argue "There's something for everyone." Either way, I highly recommend the album, especailly the two Madonna tracks.
Sunset Music!!.......2002-09-02
This soundtrack has become a favorite! It has a few upbeat and funky songs with different musical sound, as well as some very soothing and relaxing sounds. I play this music every night when we are sitting outside on the river eating dinner, at sunset time, and it compliments the atmosphere so well!! All of our guests ask what CD this is, and they love it also. Is has funky yet sophisticated style that can be played start to finish without stopping. A must have for every household!!

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Classic Burt & Dolly.......2007-07-03
I had watched this movie YEARS ago, and liked it enough, it stuck in my mind until I bought it. Yes, there are scenes not appropriate for younger audiences, but the music is great (where else do you see Burt singing?). A fun movie to watch.
Nothing dirty going on!.......2007-04-28
Fabulous musical score. Great voices. Funny lyrics. Sing along!
Buy it, you wig-wearing, citified sonofa...........2007-03-08
Brave the ridicule and get the soundtrack to one of the best Burt musicals ever! Ok, I think it's the only Burt musical ever, but these people actually have good voices.
The HUGE problem with this soundtrack...........2006-02-21
It has always irked me that instead of including the MOVIE version of Hard Candy Christmas in which ALL whorehouse girls share lead vocals on individual lines (the true MOVIE SOUNDTRACK version), a gorgeous moment in an otherwise wacky film, they included a Dolly Parton SOLO LEAD version on this soundtrack which just loses the whole point of the song's use in the movie. In fact, a true homage to the way the song was presented in the film was recorded on the RUPAUL christmas CD, in which (s)he SHARES the lines with a gaggle of her favorite fag hags--of course, that version is total camp.
WONDERFUL.......2004-12-23
I just recently saw this movie and LOVED IT. It is really a fun, energetic musical and very entertaining.I went right out and bought the original broadway cast version. That one is good, but Dolly Parton is the best Miss Mona of the 3 versions available. Although several songs from the broadway show are left out, the best ones are included ."Sneakin Around" is my favorite one and this one is not in the broadway version. This is definetly the one to get and if you are a big fan you might like the others.Personally I didnt likethe way Ann Margret's voice soundedand the original broadway version wasnt as fun. Both of them lack the energy Dolly Parton can easily bring through the music.

Great sound track, very close to the sheet music, speedy shipping from seller, over all a very good transaction.
The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas.......2005-09-19
I saw the orginal broadway play. It was a fun show. The original broadway cast should have been the cast for the movie, but I digress. Carlly Glynn has a wonderful voice that puts you in the scene and makes you want to be there. It is an enjoyable cd. A lot of fun made of our "sins of the flesh" without being tacky. Great Fun!!!
Songs are better than the movie, but the vocalists stink.......2003-11-19
I've always tried to find the Broadway version of movie musicals. I got this one at a used CD store. I liked the songs, including several that didn't make it into the movie, (sub-plots that wouldn't fit?). My complaint is the vocalists. I wouldn't mind if one or two were less-than-spectacular, but the whole cast? Miss Mona is shrill, the "watchdog" is flat, and the governor gargles! The music is interesting, but the vocals are a step below community theater. I'm going to look into the re-make recently released.
An underrated score.......2002-08-28
Simply put, "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" is one of the most underrated scores in Broadway history. True, it doesn't have traditional, grand melodies like "My Fair Lady" or "The Sound of Music," but it does have wonderful songs that help advance the story of this unique musical. Every song in the score is hummable, and some are very lovely. Just because it wasn't nominated for a Tony for Best Score in 1979 (it was nominated for Best Musical and several others) doesn't mean it didn't deserve a nod. The score should've been on the list, and, in fact, did win two Drama Desk Awards the previous year when it played Off-Broadway.
This CD should be in everybody's original broadway cast collection. It's a true gem.
Delightful!.......2002-03-10
Those of you who have read some of my other reviews probably think I'm a prude: I've complained about shows that throw in sexual material just for effect, and I've praised shows for omitting sexual innuendo. Well, you'll be surprised to learn that I enjoy listening to THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS, which I'll call `BLWT' for short.
Why the apparent change of heart? From its title, you should expect this show to have the capability to offend. When you consider the potential coarseness of the subject matter, BLWT handles it quite tastefully. (Although there are plenty of scantily clad men and women in a few scenes, don't confuse the staged version with the more vulgar movie!) As long as you can suspend your objections to prostitution, and you don't mind rooting for the girls to keep their jobs, it really isn't that difficult of a show to digest.
That said, here are some more specifics on the show.
THE STORY:
The Chicken Ranch of Gilbert is a beloved institution in Texas. With a history harking back 80 years, it has served as a homey "pleasure palace" for the men of the Lone Star State, and is currently run by the no-nonsense Miss (not `Madam') Mona Stangley. Miss Mona runs a class act: the grounds are well-tended, her `Ladies' live under strict regulations, and the `Guests' are treated with the utmost respect and are expected to reciprocate.
Everything's fine until TV moralist `Watchdog' Melvin P. Thorpe declares a personal crusade against the Chicken Ranch. Despite the fact that "one-half of the police officers and two-thirds of the lawyers in the state of Texas grew up in this house," the political pressure mounts and the Ranch is eventually shut down. While others object, Mona just takes the bitter with the sweet and moves on.
THE MUSIC:
Carol Hall (best known for her music on SESAME STREET) has written a fun-loving score reflecting her Texas roots. Her lyrics reflect the low-key lifestyle of the citizens of Gilbert, from extolling the virtues of the Chicken Ranch ("20 Fans"), to Miss Mona's assistance to a lost girl ("Girl, You're a Woman"), to a town waitress wishing she were less respectable ("Doatsy Mae"). Two great upbeat numbers are "A Lil' Ole Bitty Pissant Country Place," in which Mona explains the rules of the Ranch to her newest Ladies, and "The Sidestep," the governor's dance for the media. Perhaps best of all are three songs of the Chicken Ranch residents as they see the writing on the wall: "No Lies," "Hard Candy Christmas," and by far the best song of the show, Mona's reflection on how she ended up in her present situation, "The Bus From Amarillo."
The only song that's a real let-down is "Good Old Girl," the sheriff's paean to Miss Mona. It doesn't help that that Sheriff Ed (Henderson Forsythe) has a terrible voice.
THE RECORDING:
While none of the voices on the original cast are standouts, everyone's voice (except Forsythe's) is pleasant enough to listen to, and their acting abilities are fine. As Miss Mona, Carlin Glynn does an admirable job being a tough Texan while still showing compassion.

Just what the Doctor Ordered!.......2007-07-25
I can remember as young teens, my sister and I would be dancing around the house to this album! The talents of August Darnell and Stony Browder are always evident in the intricate layers of big band brassy boom and smooth jazzy undertones. Top this all off with a nod to disco beat and you have the Dr Buzzards secret formula. Cory Daye who provides the vocals on most tracks is an undoubted wizz at providing those delicious 'off' notes at the precise moment they are needed. You can see the influence of this band in the music and style of Gwen SteffanI, Outcast and even Prince! Put it on at your next dinner party with 30 somethings and they'll ask "WHO?"...40 somethings will sing along!
An oldy but a goody.......2007-04-05
I grew up with this stuff, and still love to hear it today, it is still just as good, creating that big band sound was an inspiration, I only wish I could have seen them perform etc in NYC. So many younger friends who have never even heard of the band are always so impressed!!
4.5 stars: The ONLY Dr. Buzzard CD you'll ever need (for now)........2006-12-26
Man, this group was truly original from the very moment they emerged back in the late '70s. Fusing big band swing with the pulsating rhythms of disco and whatever chief songwriters/co-founders Stony Browder Jr. and August Darnell could pull from their fertile imaginitive minds, their sound became something that transcended even the most popular music of its day. Another plus they had going for them were the creamy yet playful vocals of lead singer Cory Daye, who really gave the songs that extra vitality needed to make the whole concept run as smoothly as it did. It's a shame this group only lasted a few years before splintering (with Darnell and fellow member "Sugar-Coated" Andy Hernandez branching off to form their own outfit under the name Kid Creole and the Coconuts, their music also worth checking out), but the material they managed to come up with here will definitely stand the test of time if it hasn't already. Recommended for ALL who just love and appreciate good music.
Note: the title of this collection is somewhat misleading, for it really contains the group's entire output (both their self-titled debut album and their slightly more ambitious '78 follow-up 'Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band Meets King Pennett') for the RCA label. Unfortunately the tracks are not in chronological order and was probably done to give the impression of it being an actual "very best of" set. Pretty slick marketing ploy, but totally unnecessary if you ask me. Now if only their '79 Elektra release ('Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band Goes To Washington') would just get reissued, then you'd definitely have it all!
"Transistor Madness!".......2006-03-03
I'd waited for years before this collection came out! I always liked "Cherchez La Femme," but the song that grabbed my attention was "Transistor Madness!" When I heard that song the first time, I made up my mind to go to "Big Ben's Records and Tapes" to get my copy. Man, that was 28 years ago, where does the time go! Their writing, musicianship and performing were top notch. The Big Band sound juxtapose to Disco and Latin sounds were fresh and definitely different. To put it simply, they had skills to pay those bills! Folks, the price is right, get a copy and see what those of us who know are talking about! My rating: A solid FIVE STARS for the Very Best of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band!!!
A Sweet Gumbo Of Music.......2005-10-11
I heard the song "Chersee Le Femme" on the radio and loved it but the DJ never said who the artist was. It would get played once in awhile but it was just like this mystery song from out of nowhere. Fast forward to me finally finding out the artist was Dr. Buzzard and purchasing this greatest hits CD. The best way I can describe the style is a mix of Latin, big band, and a little disco. This is one of the most innovative, original, and ejoyable albums I have listened to in awhile. Why didn't this style catch on? Buzzard and Co. were really on to something here. I'm a fan of the Cab Callaway band style and Latin and disco so this was heaven for me. I got my "Cherzee Le Femme" plus new favorites like "I'll Play The Fool" and "The Gigolo and I". But what really caught my ear (and won't let go for at least 2 weeks) is "Sunshower". I love the children singing the chorus. It's just this adorable lovesong. I listen to it and I picture walking with my girlfriend though the park during an actual sunshower and the kids are singing in the background. Any band that can create images like that with music is worth listening to. This album is pure magic.
