A Masterpiece.......2005-03-06
I have been collecting records and CD's of The Baby, Journey & John Waite. When I first heard about this group I thought it's just one of those experimental albums that most great artists do. The collaboration of ex-Journey Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain and ex-The Baby John Waite is truly amazing. Neal Schon's guitar blend still spells a Journey-ish thing but clean and a bit agressive. John Waite's unique rock voice is really wonderful. Generally, the band is great! I would recommend much to rock fanatics to get this 2nd album of Bad English. It's one star better than their first. Try also Neil Schon & Jonathan Cain's solo albums. Cain's pretty good in New Age genre.
Typically good rock to listen to..........2004-01-21
Bad English primary attraction to myself is Neal Schon, one of the truly great guitarists. People mention Journey, but the group and music is not very comparable, except for Neal. Schon is always good, his playing is not over powering like some guitarists, but his solos are impressive, unique and melodic. The rest of the band are accomplished muscicians which makes a very easy on the ears style of rock - comparable more to Toto sound. The only reason I don't give 5 out of 5 is the songwriting - nothing special there.
Timing is everything.......2003-11-12
The only problem with this alblum is that it was released in 1991. By then the new grunge rock had seeped into the MTV brains of the new youth generation and the rock of the 1980s was old news. No one really cared. Except for people, like me, who will always love the music of the 1980s. If you loved Journey and/or the Babys then this is a must buy. It is just as strong as Bad English's first alblum. But, due to it being the 1990s got very little airplay.
very good, still not quite as good as the first.......2003-11-05
While I gave it 5 stars (cause I love Bad English) I have to say that unlike other reviewers, I don't think this CD is better than Bad English's debut. NO SONG can top "Possession" or "Forget Me Not", though "Straight to Your Heart" comes very close. That song, as well as "Pray for Rain" are the only songs that I really like on this entire CD. I think most of the songs sound similiar. Another great group to check out that reminds me a lot of Bad English is "The Storm". Their debut came out in 1991. If you can find it and it is still in print, you really need to get it.
Better Than The First!.......2003-11-03
10 great songs and not overblown like the first Bad English release. Not a bum track on here. My favorite is "So This Is Eden", which is a great melodic rock song to crank up in the car. Neil Schon sounds positively inspired on this release and John Waite lyrics are better than usual.

One of my two favorite Clash tribute cds........2005-10-27
I've purchased 5 Clash tribute cds and this is a high quality one. Most of the songs are punchy, strong, enjoyable generally along the same musical lines of the Clash. I get the feeling the bands did these covers with a passion for the Clash. It shows. I rarely, if ever, like beat, hip hop type music. Yet there's two such covers on here and they're very well done with a strong beat right out of the original version that just rings true. A very enjoyable cover. Not 5 stars only because there's 1 or 2 songs that are less then fully satisfying with some slight wimp factor in them but I was definitely pleasantly suprised to hear so many high quality punk (not hardcore) covers here. Well worth it, particularly at under $6. chrisbct@hotmail.com
Clash Tribute.......2000-02-10
Some interesting versions, the only real dissappointment was on "Should I Stay or Should I go" This song should have never been performed by a rapper.

To jazz fans under the age of 30, the name Freddie Hubbard probably won't signify a superstar. From the 1960s to the late 1980s, however, he was the third-best trumpeter in the music (behind Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis). Illness triggered a decline in the 1990s, but, thankfully, there are still numerous reissues that recall his greatness. Backlash, from 1966, finds the former member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in a jazz-R&B hybrid mood with pianist Albert Dailey, drummer Otis Ray Appleton, saxophonist/flutist James Spaulding, and percussionist Ray Barretto. Technically, Hubbard's robust Clifford Brown-influenced chops are in full effect. "On the Que Tee," "Up Jumped Spring," and the title track all reflect the soulful spell of Lee Morgan's hit "Sidewinder." But this date is best remembered for giving the world the first version of Hubbard's lovely jazz standard "Little Sunflower." With the lilting Latin tinges provided by Barretto, Hubbard floats above those rhythms with lyrical ease, reminding us of the majesty of his music. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Customer Reviews:
A classic!.......2003-11-13
This was one of my favorite albums when I was approaching high school. I still remember playing "On The Que-Tee" and enjoying it, and Freddie did some great stuff with the song. He also experiments with some funk on "Backlash" and "Return Of The Prodigal Son", where his solos sound great. Also, the beautiful ballads "Little Sunflower" and "Echoes Of Blue" are great, even though for some reason the former has been run into the ground by high school jazz bands everywhere (which has ruined the song for me sadly). The latter is just laid-back jazz at its finest. Freddie Hubbard was one of the greatest technicians to ever pick up the trumpet, and this album will help prove why. He just tears right through "On The Que-Tee" with a great drum solo from Otis Ray Appleton at the beginning. James Spaulding plays some great saxophone work on here, and also does a great job on flute on a few of the songs, especially on "Echoes Of Blue" and "Up Jumped Spring" (another Hubbard classic that became one of his most played standards). Albert Daily does a great job on piano, playing in the perfect style for each song. Fans of trumpet will definitely enjoy this one. This is one of Freddie's best efforts, in my opinion. It's really a shame what happened to him, but he's coming back! Let's continue to wish FH all the best.
A good album from the excellent trumpet player........2001-11-02
Freddie Hubbard is a legendary player and this is a nice effort. Songs like "Backlash" have a funky, laid-back feel to them, laced by nice piano and of course Freddie's amazing trumpet playing. My favorite track on here is definitely "On The Que-Tee", which is a classic uptempo track with a great theme. Also, "Little Sunflower" has a nice, laid-back feel to it, but as the other reviewer mentioned it won't bore you. A great album for a laid-back listener. "Echoes Of Blue" is also a great way to end the album, it's a slower song as well, and has more of a funky feel to it than the rest of the songs. There are also some flutes in this song. It's really a shame that Freddie Hubbard is no longer able to play (he blew out his upper lip from playing too much in 1992) because he was definitely one of the most talented jazz trumpet players. His range is outstanding. This record is worth buying for sure, there are not many trumpet players in jazz with Freddie's technical ability.
Absolutely Awesome.......2001-03-18
Let's put it this way: I didn't listen to jazz until I heard this album. All of the songs are awesome, but the first 3 especially stand out. "Backlash" and "Return of the Prodigal Son" are more akin to rock songs played with jazz insturments; both are uptempo and funky, with catchy melodies that I can't get out of my head. "Little Sunflower" just unreal, it puts you in a mellow vibe without being boring in the slightest. The other 3 songs are great, too. Musically, "Up on Que-Tee" is absolutely insane, and really proves that the band members are world-class musicians, but without a lot of gratuitous showing-off. Definately check this album out!
Conservative "Backlash".......2000-10-04
Freddie Hubbard's "Backlash" was originally recorded for Atlantic Records, but has been licensed to and reissued by the Koch label. Koch seems to specialize in putting out major label jazz on CD that the big boys don't want to touch because it won't sell well. (For another great Koch release, see my review of Johnny Coles' "The Warm Sound.") Hubbard left Blue Note in 1966 for a stint at Atlantic, before his successful run at CTI in the 70s. "Backlash" gives us a glimpse at the future lighter-side of Hubbard, with its calculated solos, and funky predictable riffs. It's almost as if this session is a conservative "Backlash" after the increasingly liberal, free-form experiments he made at Blue Note. (His last Blue Note album, "Blue Spirits" was a delightful combination of funky Sidewinder-like grooves, cranking Coltrane-esque post bop, and wild experimental avant-garde jazz, but sadly it is now out of print on CD.) Those who like Hubbard's CTI recordings will enjoy this effort, but those who adore his Blue Notes will be disappointed.

Kaltar: a new Jean-Michel Jarre.......2006-09-23
Hailing from Aguascalientes, Mexico, Kaltar recently released his album Emotional Backlash. A great work of electronic music, the album reminded me of the greatest of new age and electronic music.
There was a definite sound of Jean-Michel Jarre present in most songs, but Kaltar goes beyond his influences and brings in elements of jazz and a use of piano and choir voices throughout the album that gives it a more 21st century feel.
For the fans of new age and electronic music, this is an up and coming artist to keep your eye on.

Album Description
Trip hop electronica with drum n' bass and Industrial influences coupled with female vocals that glide across tempos are what you'll hear on this Swedish band's first US release. Licensed from Sweden's own electro label, Memento Materia, Nilaihah Records brings you their "best of" from the 2001 'Impetus' release and the 2002 'Blind' EP.
Their Swedish release, under the same name, was nominated for the best pop alternative album of 2001 in the Swedish Music Awards.
Customer Reviews:
Just Magic!.......2002-08-12
"Impetus" is the debut album by the newcomers "Backlash". Backlash make use of smooth female singing that perfectly fits with the open and long-range sound background. The music on "Impetus" is restful and never overpowering. It requires you to close your eyes and to concentrate on the sophisticated interplay of sound-effects and melodies that create a fantastic musical environment. The singing is always kept discreetly in the foreground and is only a companion to the synthetic melodies.
I prefer the song "Blind" as it combines melancholic singing with a percussive beat that makes this sound suitable for the dancefloor. I also like the song "Impetus" which is made of "1-Bit" sounds we know from early computer games and is accompanied by deadpan singing.
On the whole "Impetus" is a very varied album that demands highbrow listeners who like to relax while diving in a magical sound field.
