As good as ever.......2006-08-12
Released in 2000, Drivin' off the Edge of the World is the fifth studio album by Canadian melodic rockers Von Groove. This is a band that deserved far more attention when they debuted in 1992, so it's nice to see that they stuck together and continued releasing albums long after this kind of music fell out of favor with mainstream audiences. It's also nice to know that the band has not compromised their sound in any way. While they've obviously gained in maturity and experience, the music on Drivin' off the Edge of the World is stylistically very similar to what you'd find on Von Groove's self-titled debut. This is solid melodic hard rock music from start to finish, and confirms Von Groove's status as one of the best bands in the genre.
Drivin off the Edge of the World is a must-have for all Von Groove fans, and should also appeal to anyone who enjoys music by Tyketto, Bad English, Harem Scarem, etc.

Awesome melodic rock album.......2006-07-18
Von Groove's self-titled debut is one of the most sadly overlooked gems of the late 80's / early 90's hard rock scene. Hailing from Canada, Von Groove came out of the gate with an extremely strong first album of melodic hard rock similar to releases by Damn Yankees, Bad English, Tyketto, Bon Jovi, and Giant. Von Groove's music is melodic, yet without a doubt a hard rock band. The album is packed with great rock songs and better than average ballads. The musicianship, songwriting, vocals, and production were all top notch. The album's only flaw, albeit one that applies to most albums at that time, is that the lyrics are pretty standard love song fare.
This is a fantastic melodic hard rock album, and one that all fans of the genre should seek out.
Melodic Rock Of Our Dream.......2005-03-13
Canadian rocker Von Groove's debut in 1992 is incredibly great.
It would be the rock album you can dream of if you already got into Giant, Winger, Danger Danger, Firehouse, Hardline styled melodic hard rock. ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH, well-written rock anthem
leads us to the world of upbeat well-hooked melodies punching us till the edge. Fourth track ONCE IN A LIFETIME is an acoustic ballad Firehouse is well capable of but theirs can easily rival the aforementioned. HOUSE OF DREAMS is just the bombastic and catchy rock anthem what I had been dreaming for so long. ARIANNE is the killer emotional ballad which could have become huge hit. SLAVE TO SIN was the song inserted to the introductory part of the opener.
Must-have for early 90s rock fans who love Firehouse, Winger, Danger Danger, Hardline and Giant.

A magical debut.......2004-06-11
Matthew Von Doran can be very proud of his initial release. Not only has he corralled some of the very finest jazz players on the planet, he has also written a clutch of smart, vital tunes in a wide variety of moods.
Let's start with the players. Any young jazzer would kill to play with instrumentalists of this caliber on his maiden voyage. The drums corps alone boggles the mind: Peter Erskine, former Weather Report drummer and leader of numerous; Terri Lynn Carrington, herself a drum master, band leader, and composer of note; Gary Novak, in-demand session man and holder of the drum chair on Joe Locke's two recent winners; and Marcus Baylor, the current Yellowjackets' drummer. Throw in Jimmy Haslip, James Genus, and LA studio vet Darek "Oles" Oleszkiewicz on bass, Larry Goldings on organ, and Bob Sheppard and Bob Mintzer on sax, and you've got quite a crew.
The disc splits the difference between smooth (although not in a jazz lite sense) and skanky, the former usually in a quartet (guitar, sax, bass, drums) format and the latter in a organ trio mode, with vibes substituting for sax on a couple of numbers. The tunes show a variety, depth, and maturity of compositional moves uncommon for one so young. Obviously, he's listened to the jazz organ masters, classic--Larry Young, Jimmy Smith, Don Patterson, Charles Earland--and modern--Larry Goldings (who plays on three cuts), Sam Yahel, and George Colligan--and imbibed the vibe, which he very attractively presents. But he's also listened to his Pat Metheny, whom he slyly conjures on nylon string guitar on a couple cuts.
A very attractive initial offering, branding Mathew Von Doran as someone to watch very carefully. Easily recommended.
A fantastic CD by a fantastic guitar player!.......2004-05-14
Although Matthew Von Doran is not as prolific as the jazz giants featured on this CD, his debut record, "In This Present Moment", proves that both his skill as a composer and as an instrumentalist are phenomenal. While he shares few stylistic similarities to Metheny, Scofield, and Abercrombie, Von Doran has created a sound very much his own. From angular the tracks "Cable" and "Trick", to the ethereal ballad "Somewhere Before", to high-energy, fast-paced tunes such as "Critical Mass" and "Vanity Strikes", this record stands as a testament to Von Doran's ability to create a collection of tracks that each offer something different to the listener. This is a great CD, and hopefully this is the first of many albums to follow.

Customer Reviews:
Milder Tasted .......2005-11-05
Von Groove is one of the best-kept secret of Canadian rock legends. Just like Harem Scarem they go ahead creating great rock music even though not introduced in larger scale. Their fourth album in 1999 is a commercial-oriented one reminding me of good ol' 80s pop rock and has similar direction as Firehouse, Danger Danger and Giant.
This album still retains the edgeness of the debut as in the opener TEST OF FAITH, and the last ROCK & ROLL STATION. Also they have excellent ballads as shown in BACK IN LOVE AGAIN, beautiful acoustic ballad reminding me of some of Firehouse ones.
Balld ONLY LOVE tastes like their contemporary DANGER DANGER. FOOLING YOURSELF has the guitar riff remnicent of JOURNEY.
Verdict: Though a bit milder tasted, excellent songs well compensate.
Rating: 90 out of 100: Nearly great as the perfect debut.
Recommended for early 90s pop hard rock fans who like Firehouse, Bon Jovi and Danger Danger.

Von Groove doesn't miss a step.......2006-08-05
1998's Chameleon is the first Von Groove album I've heard since their excellent 1992 self-titled debut album. The years don't seem to have taken much from this great Canadian melodic rock band. Chameleon is perhaps a bit more laid back than the band's early work, but it is still a first rate melodic rock album, and is very reminiscent of current works by Honeymoon Suite, Night Ranger, and Bonfire. There are plenty of great guitar hooks, and Michael Shotten's voice is as dynamic as ever. Chameleon is a very solid album that should make plenty of melodic rock fans happy.
The track listing is as follows:
1. Calling the World
2. Two Nights in Tokyo
3. Chameleon
4. Mission Man
5. When Love Comes Back
6. the Snake
7. April May
8. All for Rock n' Roll
9. Without You
10. Disbeliever
11. Propaganda
12. Stop Sleeping Your Dreams Away
13. Soldier of Fortune
14. Barely Human
NOTE: The track "Soldier of Fortune" later appeared as a bonus track on the reissue of Von Groove's debut album.
