Dylan was virtually gushing great songs when this masterpiece arrived in the summer of 1965. From the epochal opening of "Like a Rolling Stone" through the absurdly apocalyptic closer, "Desolation Row," his command of surrealistic language was daring and amazing. As a vocalist, he was rewriting the rules of the game. Jimi Hendrix made note of Mr. Z's technically suspect pitch and decided that he too was a singer. And the backing, though ragged, is precisely right. Is this the essential Dylan album? It's certainly one of them. --Steven Stolder

The album to begin with for electric Dylan.......2007-07-31

This is Dylan's best album. "Like a Rolling Stone" is the most celebrated single here, for good reason, but similarly arranged, lyrically sweeping stream-of-consciousness songs such as "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," "Ballad of a Thin Man," could have become the defining single of its era had it been released in place of "Like a Rolling Stone." The album also includes ragged blues rock such as "Highway 61 Revisted," "From a Buick Six," and "Tombstone Blues" - all driven by Mike Bloomfield's searing guitar work (Bloomfield was probably the most gifted rock guitarist of the pre-Hendrix era). Slower numbers like "Queen Jane Approximately," with its cascading keyboard flourishes, and "Desolation Row" the epic-length closer, round out the album.

this is the absolute TRUTH on REALITY. bob dylan mixes up surrealism, symbolism (from rimbaud)and good old fashioned rock 'n roll to make on of the seminal albums of the lifetime of rock 'n roll. he mixes up a tremendous lyrical beat, wild frenzy and articulated truth in his lyrics to make a classic that will stand the test of time for as long as time goes on. along with blonde on blonde, and bringing it all back home, he reached the absolute pinnacle of describing real reality in poetical terms. in all his later albums, he would never attain this wild greatness again.

As Great as Everybody Says it is. .......2007-06-19

I giggled a little bit when I saw that the 5 star to 4 star ratio for this record was 29 to 1 with no negative ratings whatsoever. Well, there's a very good reason for this imbalance; the perceptions of my fellow critics are totally correct. Yes, Highway 61 revisited is every bit as wonderful as everyone says it is. I'm not sure if I'm qualified to speak about it though as I've only listened to it 123,343 times over a two decade period. I do agree though that in life one quickly discovers that many things are overrated--but not this CD. It is unknown how one could improve on it very much. There's not much better out there unless it's Blonde on Blonde and even then it's close. The tracks here are absolutely seamless and the lyrical brilliance (at the time) was without precedent. If we rate songs on a scale from 1 to 100 I'd have to say that not one of these tunes would merit anything below a 90. Had Dylan only released this CD he would still have been remembered as a genius. The making of Highway was something unknown to me until I saw Martin Scorsese's No Direction Home in which Al Kooper tells the story of the recording sessions, and the interview with him became one of my favorite parts of the documentary. I won't spoil it for you but, for the Dylan fan, you must at least rent it. Hearing about the way Kooper stumbled into immortality is worth five bucks or more. Well, I'll stop raving now but these tracks are Olympian in their proportion.

The best and most important Rock and Roll album ever? Yeah, definitely. Blonde on Blonde may have come after, but for me this album was always a distillation of Blonde on Blonde...other people see that album as filling out the ideas on Highway 61, but to me it's just the opposite. I've owned one LP, 2 cassettes and am now on my second CD of this album. (no I'm not an old hippie...born in '64, thank you). Buy it, steal it,...but definitely get it.

A Stunning Masterpiece.......2007-03-17

If there's ever been a better album made in the rock era, I have not heard it. It opens with the landmark "Like a Rolling Stone" and sustains that high level all the way through. Combines various genres of music: rock, folk, blues, Tex Mex, country and the effect is mesmerizing. It's nice to hear Dylan when he could actually carry a tune, and his rich, raspy voice serves the material well. The musicianship is first rate. Especially noteworthy is the blend of organ, guitar and harmonica on several songs. Dylan kept raising the bar with his albums and it never rose higher than w/ this incredible album. Check it out.

a dylan primer for beginners.......2007-06-27

Just in case someone reading this is new to Dylan, I thought I'd offer some pretty conventional but hopefully useful advice. Start out with the three Dylan albums listed below, all readily and inexpensively available. If these get you hooked, start exploring the others. If not, might I suggest the collections Elvis #1 or the Beatles #1. If none of those do it for you, try Mozart. If Wolfgang leaves you cold too, may God help you.

absolute greatness.......2007-04-05

I always felt the best way to listen to this album was driving around with the windows down and BLASTING this sucker. Yes, even Desolation Row. Blonde on Blonde was also genius, but this one had such unbridled energy and freedom just pouring out of it, Dylan just sounds so loose and wild with his words whereas Blonde (and the albums after it) seemed more mannered and deliberately "poetic." This one is definitely a "deserted island" one for me---it would be in my top 10 albums to have with me if I was ever lost at sea. Long live Bob!

A Benchmark in Music History - RS 500 #4.......2007-03-03

This is a truly defining moment in the history of popular music. Until this album, there was a gigantic stone wall that divided rock and roll from folk. Rock had invaded many other genres, such as bluegrass, the blues, reggae and even swing. But folk had remained the private domain of coffee houses and protest singers in the vein of Woody Guthrie. The thing is, rock and roll had precious little to say, miring itself in songs about light topics like teenage rebellion, puppy love and the romance of fast cars or surfboards. Dylan by this time had emerged as the elite among folk singers, with songs like "Blowin' In The Wind", "The Times They Are A-Changin'" and "Masters Of War" on his resume. To say the risk to go electric would be large supremely understates the fact. But Dylan decided that this was the moment for his big step, and he did so with a bang. "Like A Rolling Stone" is regarded as one of the greatest songs of all time in any genre; it's a cultural landmark, and it successfully bridged the gap between rock and folk by pushing folk music to a new generation. But most important of all, rock was now free to speak about topics that it previously couldn't touch, and the artistic freedom would trickle down through artist like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, U2, R.E.M. and Nirvana, just to name a few. There are perhaps a dozen critical junctures in the growth of music in the twentieth century - and this was surely one of them.

It seemed as if even when Dylan went to the bathroom people would listen for sounds and try to find meaning in them. He kept repeating that his words meant nothing but nobody would accept that answer, everything has to have meaning. But, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar (Somebody else said that). The true phenomenon is that Dylan had the power to make us believe there was more. He exposed the plastic society that he lives in by just being himself. With this album he lit a fire under the folk music stage and gave lots of people some hot feet. He is the ultimate rebel without a cause. The opening lyrics to Highway 61 are classic mental slapstick.

Never goes back on the rack.......2007-07-04

We all have those cd's that sit forever next to the player and never make it back onto the rack. Ever since I discovered Argus it has taken on a prominent place in that frequently played pile. My discovery of this album while browsing Amazon was quite by accident and up until that moment I had never even heard of the band. But after reading the reviews I decided to give it a shot. What I found was an early 1970' gem that's equal parts bluesy and progressive with great vocal harmonies and a guitar duo that should be ranked amoung the best that rock has ever seen. It can be held up as a perfect example of "the album". Not just a collection of songs, but one of those rare moments in history when everything clicks, the material, the performence, the recording, the packaging, everything sits tightly and flawlessly together. The three live bonus tracks are a little more raw than the studio material, but when compared to other live recordings of the day, they bear witness to the fact that Wishbone Ash was just as capable on stage as in the studio. It's certainly the place to start if you're at all interested in this band, the only downside being that their other albums-as great as many of them are-all have to live up to this recording.

An exciting and creative album of hard rock .......2007-04-15

Interestingly enough, my first exposure to this great album was through the Supernatural Fairytales progressive rock box set put out by Rhino. The track presented on the box set was Warrior, an imaginative bit of hard rock that sounded "proggy enough" that my curiosity was piqued and I picked this album up. All in all, Argus (1972) is an excellent concept album of hard rock that features some great playing and features creative arrangements.

The lineup on the album included Steve Upton (drums and percussion); Martin Turner (Gibson Thunderbird bass guitar); Andy Powell (electric and acoustic guitars); and Ted Turner (electric and acoustic guitars). Much to my surprise (and delight) John Tout of English progressive rock group Renaissance played a very "churchy" sounding Hammond organ on Throw down the Sword (although I swear that I heard a tiny bit of mellotron buried in there somewhere as well). The guys are all great musicians and are capable of jamming pretty intensely. I especially like the aggressive and trebly sound that Martin gets out of his Gibson - in fact it reminds me a great deal of the sound John Entwistle would get. As a side note, Wishbone Ash had supported The Who on a few occasions, and their influence is felt on a few tracks (particularly Time Was, which would not have been out of place on Who's Next (1971)). The twin lead guitar work is also great and a pleasant change of pace for me - as a progger I am used to hearing leads played on synthesizers or just a single lead guitar (two guitarists were highly unusual for most prog bands).

The music on Argus is a great blend of hard rock jamming, nice acoustic passages, and thoughtful arrangements. Dynamics are used pretty effectively and the quieter pieces balance the heavier tracks nicely. The vocal melodies are also excellent and really contribute a great deal to the album, which seems to be arranged in a song-cycle suite of sorts.

This remastered album features great sound quality and loads of liner notes. The bonus tracks are all excellent although my favorite is 10'10" proggy workout entitled The Pilgrim - this is a fantastic track that features some intricate ensemble work and great playing by the entire band. Another fun track is the high energy jam on the 17'05" Phoenix. Apparently, the three bonus tracks were taken from an August 21, 1972 concert in Memphis, Tennessee, USA and were released as a limited edition promotional album.

All in all, a great album of hard rock by this English band that is creative enough that it makes for a very enjoyable listening experience.

Simply The Best.......2007-03-13

Argus is Wishbone Ashes masterpiece. They never bettered it. The best example I know of for crystal clear twin-lead (Gibson ans Fender) guitars-way ahead of it's time. Their vocals also never sounded better. One of life's mysteries is why The Ash never continued in this direction? They followed up with 'Wishbone Four', which is great, but pales next to this gem. Every home should have a copy. Over the years I have had 3 LPs, 2 tapes, 2 eight-track tapes (wore them all out. I had the older master of the cd, now I have this remixed cd and it is absolutely stunnig in clarity----Bravo! Buy it, you need it--pioneering English rock from the early seventies.

Too 1970's..........2006-12-06

I was tipped off to Wishbone Ash from an article I read about Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) who credited this band as being one of his earliest and biggest influences.

I bought their self titled debut album and this one from Amazon based on that article and also because both of these albums were well received by reviewers.

Maybe I read too much into the article or perhaps this was just another spur of the moment purchase, but I think these albums would better suit 1970's rock fans per se i.e. a fan of the period than those who prefer the harder style of rock that would emerge from the mid to late 1970's.

The album does have its moments, and there are some really nice melodies and some nice guitar/bass work, but it too often drifts into that very early "happy happy" 1970's sound that marked the transition from the 1960s to the 1970's.

I guess that should be expected, since this album was released only two years into the turbulent new decade at the close of the flower power hippie period.

The use of the twin guitars a noteworthy feature, since this band is also credited as an early pioneer of this style of rock. The bass is unusually active for this period and doesn't just settle for simple changes, which would make sense, since they did influence Steve Harris after all.

I prefer this album to their debut, but it does make me think of an English version of the Eagles if there ever was such a thing. Not that that is a bad thing.

I am a fan of 1970's rock and I think this decade produced some fantastic guitar/bass rock, but this is just a little too 70's for my tastes.

If you are new to Wishbone Ash as I am, but are basically a hard rock/metal fan at heart, try looking for MP3 versions on the web and just test drive one or two songs before you decide on buying a complete album.

Wishbone's BEST.......2006-11-10

The album "Argus" by Wishbone Ash is by far their best studio album they ever produced. Every song, except maybe "Leaf and Stream" is a beautifully crafted 'artsy" rock style. Somewhat similar to Pink Floyd or Steely Dan, only with much more guitars. With the addition of their awesome song "Phoenix" added to this remastered & revisited cd, this is defintily a WishBone Ash essential cd. Favorite picks are "Sometimes World" and "Blowing Free". Can't go wrong with this CD

When I saw Brideshead Revisited for the first time, I was immediately captivated by this music. These themes are rich of sentimental emotions, and absolutely suitable for this tv. series. I can not imagine B.R. without them. They were born for it.

Burgon's idiosyncratic brilliance is brilliant.......2004-11-17

For me, the stand-out tracks are JULIA'S THEME and SEBASTIAN AGAINST THE WORLD. In BRIDESHEAD THEME, it's a borderline-thrill to hear that bassoon putt-putting all over the place in the background. The second part of GOING TO BRIDESHEAD has that brilliant suspended-string shtick. VENICE NOCTURNE has a slow hypnotic quality that reminded me of John Barry. The end of THE FIRST VISIT is also Barryesque. In JULIA, the harmonic tension between the woodwinds and the strings is admirably modernistic.

My favorite passage is near the end of SEBASTIAN'S SUMMER. An oboe passage, backed with a brilliant ascending violin figure, and with the violas doing a slow trill.

Brideshead reviewed.......2003-09-08

When I bought this CD, it was the Brideshead theme I was after. It's there, but be warned that it's only 2:00 minutes long.
Nearly all the tracks are fairly short with an average track time of 2:31. Each track is a piece of music intended for a certain situation or part of the story. Which doesn't really give you the time to sit back and soak up the moods in the same way as with non-soundtrack classical music. About half of the tracks contain the Brideshead theme in more or less obvious forms. I think you would have to remember extremely well to recollect most of the tracks apart from the Brideshead theme. I still recommend the CD and consider it worth it's money. A must have for anyone who loved the series. If only for the Brideshead theme which still nearly knocks me over.

I have cruised the INTERNET for years looking for a CD such as this (I have the LP but it is worn out from being played so much) . What a wonderful surprise. The music makes tears come to my eyes.

I have listened to this album time and time again. I never tire of its beauty, its passion, and its inventiveness. It is one of the few albums I must always have on my MP3 player. It is a work of genius by a man who is brilliantly interpreting the genius of the Beatles. The recording quality is superb.

Interesting and surprising.......2006-06-11

I love this CD. It combines the best of both worlds--classical and rock. Paul McCartney said he took Bach pieces and made them into something new; for instance he used Bach chord progressions for his song "Jenny Wren," on his newest "Chaos and Creation" CD. Well, Bayless takes Beatles melodies and does great Bach-style things with them here. It is fun to hear Beatles done in the Baroque style, interestingly and flawlessly. Bayless is creative in his arrangements, AND he performs so well. This CD makes me smile. I betcha Bach and all four Beatles are smiling whenever its played.

As a professional classical musician (and erstwhile Beatles fan - my mother raised me listening to them at home in the late 70s) I have to commend this delightful album! The playing itself is fantastic, and the artistry and skill of John Bayless in imitating Bach is really amazing. It's just plain fun to listen to, but sounds like "real" classical music. I've bought this as a gift for many other musical colleagues, to rave reviews!

True to Bach, with a hint of The Beatles.......2005-08-13

This CD is a tribute to Bach with a hint of The Beatles infused between. It rings true to Bach's complex, multi-voiced piano pieces with mild Beatles undercurrents. Beautifully done. I completely disagree with the previous reviewers.

Worth a try, but don't expect much.......2005-08-08

I like listening to experimental music, and thus I have a lot of respect for this album for what it attempts to accomplish. I had high expectations for this experiment because I am a huge fan of Bach and the Beatles. It's very hard to hear any Beatles influence during most of the album. Unless the money that you plan to spend on this album is disposable, I suggest that you consider spending some time listening to the samples before investing in this album.

Television Meets Psych Rock Meets Spaghetti Western.......2007-06-19

Each of the Paisley Underground bands seemed to have their own little slant on the sounds of the movement, which was about bringing guitar-driven, psychedelic music back to the fore in the synth-heavy 80s. True West's bent was a little hard to figure. There were the duelling guitar wizards, Tolman and McGrath, who sounded more like Verlaine and Lloyd than any 1960s guitarists. There was the feeling of the old West, not just in the band's name but in their sound and feel - something that put you in mind of tan chinos, shoe boots with spurs, shots of rye at the local saloon, and lots of dirt. Then there was the psychedelic thing - the cover of Pink Floyd's "Lucifer Sam," the sometimes trippy lyrics, the spiralling guitar lines . . . In the liner notes to this compilation of True West's best material, it is suggested that they hit their peak on the full-length album, Drifters. But that album, despite its excellent opening track, "Look Around," pales in comparison to the EP, Hollywood Holiday. The eight songs on the EP represented all of the best elements of True West - the songs seem fresh, they keep you guessing what might come next, each one has its own little angle on the whole picture the band was presenting then. The album, meanwhile, gets tired after the third or fourth track, and feels like a labor from there. And the three tracks produced by Tom Verlaine thrown on at the end are notweworthy for historical reference, but otherwise pretty unremarkable. If you were into the Paisley Underground thing when it was happening, or if you just like guitar-heavy psychedelic rock, you will absolutely want to pick up this CD. Just be prepared to hear a combination of inspired gems and sludge.

Making The World Safe For Guitars.......2007-06-15

Back in the early-mid '80s, there was talk that the electric guitar was going to go the way of the dinosaur and the dodo bird to replaced by keyboards, computers and things. Bands like True West took a stand and helped save the six-string from the onslaught of the MIDI monster. The dueling guitar duo of Richard McGrath and Russ Tolman was on par with Television's Verlaine and Lloyd, in fact Tom Verlaine was so impressed with True West that he produced three tracks, which are luckily included as bonus tracks on this two-for reissue of the band's first two albums: Hollywood Holiday and Drifters. Drawing inspiration from Syd Barrett era Floyd, 40s film noir, the Beck and Page era Yardbirds, late night 80s cable TV, the San Francisco Sound, and the Mercury space program, True West created a couple classic albums that sound fresh and vital today.

I own both the original EP and LP on vinyl, the EP is more feedback laden, the LP was, I don't know, more laid back, but w/good dual guitar songs. Both EP and LP appear to be on this CD, so enjoy!

Revisionism can be as rewarding as rediscovery; indeed, they often make a compelling duo. Those sentiments drive veteran producer Hal Willner's tribute to pioneering musicologist Harry Smith's documentation and preservation of American folk forms--music that was already an endangered species by the time he originally compiled them for Folkways Records in the early '50s. As he's done on similar tributes to musicians as varied as jazz giants Monk and Mingus, Italian film scoring legend Nina Rota, and songwriters Kurt Weill and Leonard Cohen, Willner puts together a group of musicians as intriguingly eclectic as the vintage songs they're covering. That Smith's own original efforts helped fuel the '60s folk boom that in turn inspired more than a few of the musicians here helps give the collection the warm sensibility of musical traditions coming full circle.

Spread across two CDs and a pair of DVD's are a rich slate of performances captured in Los Angeles, New York, and London in 1999 and 2001, as well as documentary material about Smith's own pioneering efforts that helped inspire them. Beck and Lou Reed spin spare, harrowing takes on blues godfathers Robert Johnson and Blind Lemon Jefferson, respectively, while Elvis Costello, Wilco, Richard Thompson, Steve Earle, Van Dyke Parks, the McGarrigles, and others offer up covers characterized by varying degrees of reverence. But, as is typical of most Willner projects, it's the more unlikely musical pairings here that yield the greatest intrigues, be they Pere Ubu's David Thomas recasting "Fishin' Blues" in his forceful persona or Bill Frisell's distinctive jazz sensibilities--the latter also suffusing Gavin Friday's "Fatal Flower Garden" with ghostly elegance. A welcome sense of playfulness also surfaces throughout, one whose good humor even makes room for a relevant clip from Chris Guest's A Mighty Wind folk mockumentary, as well as amusing recollections by some of the artists influenced by Smith's original musical archaeology. Very interesting souvenir of a once in a lifetime experience..........2007-04-22

I attended the concert on the first night in LA, from which a majority of the material here was drawn (I actually stuck it out 'til the 2:00 am conclusion!) What drew me to the show is much the same as the appeal of this set - the chance to see 30 or more of your favorite singers and musicians on the same stage (and a few who you could do without), playing songs from what just might be the greatest and most influential compilation (or "mix tape") of all time! At the very least, this is a very nice souvenir of the event. The interviews and backstage/rehearsal footage in the DVD are very illuminating and are ample testimony to the mad genius of Hal Willner (creator/producer).
Some of the performances here are a lot less impressive that my memory of them, while others (David Johansen, Richard Thompson and Elvis Costello, among others) hold up very well. Willner should be commended for showcasing criminally underrated artists like Robin Holcomb and Van Dyke Parks, as well as for pushing some people (like Beck and Beth Orton) out of their comfort zone material-wise, resulting in some very memorable performances. Some of my other favorites here: Sonic Youth (with trombonist Roswell Rudd) burn up the stage on "Dry Bones", David Thomas is an insane genius, Bob Neuwirth, Geoff Muldaur and Steve Earle all individually show they are up to the task.
There were some classic moments from the night I attended that didn't make it to this release, including Garth Hudson's bizarre and amazing "Recessional Music" on the Royce Hall pipe organ, and Daniel Lanois' mini-set of the Anthology's Cajun songs (accompanied by his super-loud electric guitar). The pre-Mighty Wind Folksmen, introducing some much needed perspective, are rightfully represented here. However, not included was their version of "Flashdance," which somehow said it all (the audience were larfing). Also, not to be forgotten was Mary Margaret O'Hara's train wreck version of "Better Things" (which is represented here by a less chaotic version from a different night). It caused a mass exodus - as it was about midnight at that point, a lot of people were probably suddenly remembering they had babysitters or jobs to go to in the morning!
Being a lot more familiar with the original Anthology recordings now than I was prior to the concert, I am probably a lot more critical of these interpretations, some of which are frankly a bit superficial. Also, it is a bit more noticeable, especially on the DVD, which performers hadn't done their homework and learned the songs thoroughly before the show! On the other hand, some of the versions here caused me to have new appreciation for the songs themselves and really focus on the brilliance and bizarreness of the lyrics. A lot of contemporary songwriters could stand to check them out..
On the technical end, the camera work on the DVD is a bit "on the fly" but not too bad considering there was probably very little rehearsal/blocking. Audio-wise, the recording quality is much better than expected (I'm guessing there was a litlle bit of post-production repair, including fixing some fluffed lyrics). The second DVD ("Old Weird America") that delves a bit more into Harry Smith and the origins of the Anthology, has been shown a bit in art house theaters around the country and is almost worth the price of the set by itself.

There are many good things in this package, but none better than David Johansen's two mighty contributions, 'Old Dog Blue' and 'James Alley Blues'. He's come a long, long way since the New York Dolls and Buster Poindexter, and it seems to me that he's finally where he should be.

Petra Haden's 'Single Girl' is pretty good as well. But Johansen's performances (both captured on the dvd) are nonpareil. Can't help but feel that of all the artists here, he and Haden are the ones Harry Smith would have recognised at once as belonging to the American tradition he curated.

If you are curious about this but are not familiar with the original "Anthology of American Folk Music"--GET IT, and listen. It is like looking back in time, sort of like the Hubble telescope, only we are looking at images from our own human heritage, and perhaps ourselves.

As Hal Willner says, there are pieces you will love and pieces you might not like. But in truth, this is how the artists in this collection interpreted the originals. And even in the ones I was less than enthusiastic about, I saw something, and went back with a greater appreciation of the original. As a result I developed more enthusiasm for the new performance. This is something to be savored over and over.

I had been listening to Folkways LPs and subscribing to Singout! since the early '60s, and aquired the anthology in the early '70s. I had no previous knowledge of many performers in this set. So this was an eye-opener for me. I even read a review of a person, although generally positive, who wondered why "The Folksman" were in this. My answer is, "we perhaps should not take anything too seriously, and what if the gift of life itself is just a joke?"

No collection will please everyone. That being said, this one left me a little cold in that the coices about what to include and what to leave out were not the choices I would have made were I producing this collection.
Without going into details and whys - suffice it to say that before buying this set, you need to take a close look at the playlist so that you will not wind up buying something that is appreciably different than what you were hoping it would be.

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

Those who doubt the obsessive, unbridled affection Clash mainstay Joe Strummer held for traditional rock and R&B roots need only punch up virtually any track on this infectious collection of live and studio cuts from the 101ers, the raw yet accomplished band Strummer fronted just prior to his punk superstardom. While most such early-catalog excavations are suspicious and often spotty, Elgin Avenue Breakdown Revisited is a revelatory rush, from the opening blowout of "Letsagetabitarockin'." Many of the tracks rock with the rootsy charm of fellow pub rockers Ducks Deluxe, yet one can hear the later sound of the Clash nearly fully formed on tracks like the blue-beat-seasoned "Sweet Revenge," "Keys to Your Heart," and "Junco Partner." The collection's second half kicks into even higher gear, presenting a generous slate of previously unreleased live workouts that hammer familiar R&B staples like "Shake Your Hips" and "Maybellene" into submission and closing with a frenzied rave-up of Van Morrison and Them's Brit Invasion staple, "Gloria." --Jerry McCulley

This is the first review of an album I've done on Amazon. I'm listening to it right now, and I'm just driven to tell everyone.... this is awesome! I love it. It is a must for fans of Joe Strummer. Don't expect The Clash. This is nothing like any Clash album. This is very Beatles-esque for the most part. It shows a lot of early, leather-clad rock influence.

BTW, I bought the club version, which is manufactured for BMG. I was worried about that a bit, but no longer. Sounds awesome, and the packaging is excellent, with liner notes and lyrics. I was also worried about the anti-piracy notes on the back which are not present on the non-club version. I burn backup copies of my cds not to pirate, but to use in my car. I have successfully burned a backup copy of this and other club cds.

I can't believe I found this.......2006-01-15

"Lonely Mother's Son," huh? More like Jail Guitar Doors. That track brought a big smile to my face as soon as the chorus started and I realized it was the song he'd later do as part of The Clash.

This CD is a real find, not just for completists, but for fans of old school rock and roll, and of Strummer's growling voice. If this was a little more polished and edited down, it would be London Calling quality. It's really that good. The sound quality on the live stuff is awful, but I don't wish they had left it off.

Bloody brilliant!.......2005-08-31

This record feels like a resurrection not only of the sound of original punk but of the man, Joe Strummer himself. The sound of the 101ers is every bit as fresh as his later work with The Mescaleros yet takes its place with the music of its time. Letsagetabitarockin, the first on the album, is a brilliant start to the collection. Overall this record is one that should be added to any avid Clash, punk, or in general rock 'n roll fan.

Blistering Images in Rhyme.......2006-08-27

This is Bob Dylan at his very finest and this is probably his best record, from "Like a Rolling Stone" to the album's closer, "Desolation Row," the listener is assaulted with blistering images in rhyme that she will never forget. Dylan changed the shape of the musical landscape with this record, changed rock and roll forever. His songs broke the three minute mold, they weren't about love and love lost anymore. In fact some of them are darned hard to understand, but they stay with you none the less. Bob Dylan was, and is, the poet laureate of Rock and Roll, the poet laureate of America. Love after we're all gone, his lyrics will be sung, recited, read.

I Love this Record.......2006-04-02

"Like a Rolling Stone" the first song on HIGHWAY 61 grabs you right from the getgo and this album does not let go till the last guitar lick in "Desolation Row" and in between there are some of the best rock and roll you are ever going to listen too. It seems like the band has been playing together forever, though from what I've read of how Bob Dylan makes records, they probably just got together, did a few run throughs, then bang, they probably cut the record. Well, they did great, this record not only stands the test of time, it will never get old.

Gone are the Protest Songs on this Rockin' Rocker.......2006-04-02

It must have been hard for the Dylan faithful to make the switch from folk to rock. He didn't make it as easy as Steve Jobs apparently has done with the switch to the new Intel processor in his new Macs. However he set the world on fire with "Like a Rolling Stone." Al Kooper's keyboards are nothing short of haunting. I've heard Dylan do this song on countless live tapes and in person a few times, but never have I heard him approach the power he does on this record with this song. "Like a Rolling Stone" is followed by "Tombstone Blues" more shear rock and roll music and this time it's piled on top of beautiful poetry. Next up comes my favorite song on the record, "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry" more raw power. And the record goes on in that vein, ending with the long and very wonderful "Desolation Row." Just wonderful. Wait, I already said that. Well now I'm saying it again.

The Whole Album is a Rocker Extrodinaire.......2006-04-02

I just love the lead guitar work on "Desolation Row." That lead guitar punches up Dylan's voice and those surreal lyrics to make this song like no other. I shudder for the whole eleven minutes every time my husband plays this song and he plays it a lot. You can never get tired of this. Mr. Dylan really raised the bar with this one. "Like a Rolling Stone" is a rocker extrodinaire and it goes on for six minutes, which was a big deal when it came out, because most hit records never when over something like three minutes, ten seconds. Dylan really broke the mold with "Stone", opened up the scene for others to record long songs. This is a super CD. One you just have to own.
