4 out of 5 stars Heavy and great, and also heavy.......2007-06-29

Just picked this up and it's good stuff. Reminds me of DOWN, kinda mid-tempo, really heavy riffs with good grooves. I haven't heard much post-Gustafson era Overkill, but I'm assuming Bobby Blitz doesn't sing on the new Overkill stuff like he sings here. His voice is a lot deeper sounding and it really works with the music. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Buy It You wont be disappointed.......2007-06-26

Every track rocks. ALL Metal and Heavy, heavy heavy..bobby's singing is strong as ever, more growling and less high pitched as most of the overkill style, but excellent still.

If International Velvet was Catatonia exploding into the public sights, Equally Cursed and Blessed is the sound of a band realizing what's happened. As such, it is a much more personal album. The opening track "Dead from the Waist Down" provides a tour-bus perspective on America while "Bulimic Beats" is glassily fragile and backs Cerys Matthews's voice with a harp. Catatonia continue to stomp about while displaying wit, particularly with "Londinium" ("I come alive outside the M25") and the wonderful, Clash-influenced "Storm the Palace," an anti-Royalist song suggesting what we can do with the Queen and her house ("Turn it into a bar, let them work in Spar"). Finally, on "She's a Millionaire," Matthews delivers the best pronunciation of the word "gynecology" ever recorded. --Emma Johnston

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love this album, I love Cerys, I love the Lyrics........2002-10-17

Let's state the obvious. Cerys Matthews is a total babe. See cover.

OK but can she sing?

Well, yes, but sometimes she doesn't. Sometimes she does. She's a bit like Bjork this way. I'm not sure it's singing and I'm not sure it's good, but I sure as hell like it.

The song opens with "dead from the waist down" a lounge-act song about the nihilism of our consumer age. It's so lovely it's the kind of beautiful music that goes with a horrible disaster.

But the indictment doesn't stop there, Cery's interesting voice indicts London for the cesspool it is (interesting as a comparison point in Tool's AEnima). Cursing the 'black cabs' in 'the neon disease' you can feel the Welsh angst about Londinium.

Tracks 3 and 4 mark a waning in my interest, a complaint about using the church to fix mental problems and something about rich chicks. However, the writers of the catatonia lyrics have a gift for clever lyrics so these are even fairly interesting (D.I.Y gynecology?).

Storm the palace again attacks the monarchy. Rinse. Repeat.

We return to the melodic dissociation of track one with bulemic beats and valerian. valerian is great -- it has this great craggy oceanside vista on the english coast feel about it. I love these two tracks. 'Nothing Hurts' a little later falls into this same genre.

Shoot the messenger isn't al that great.

But then comes dazed beautiful and bruised. god what a song and Cerys totaly belts it out. She's putting her all into this song. Something about being a survivor and being beautiful for it. This is the song for everyone who wants someone out there and is not willing to settle. Man that's totally inspiring.

Now on my CD I also got Road Rage and Mulder & Scully which were released on the 97 "International Velvet" record. They're pooppy and accessible tunes -- and mighty fine at that.

With the demise of Catatonia this year, I believe this record (or IV) will stand as their crowninng achievement.

4 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2002-04-08

Catatonia is a great band and Equally Blessed and Cursed is in my opinion their greatest album to date. Cerys Matthews has such an incredibly unique voice. Best tracks on this cd are "Dazed, Beautiful and Bruised," the catchy sing-a-long song "Road Rage" and my favorite, the sultry "Shoot the Messenger". Over all the album is just better than average but I still recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great follow-up to 'International Velvet'.......2002-01-30

Most people first heard of Catatonia when they released previous album 'International Velvet'. This, their third album and follow-up to their breakthrough album was anticipated heavily. In many ways this is a more accomplised album, with witty lyrics and a variety of style.

It begins with the single 'Dead From The Waist Down', a rare smoothly seductive tune sung by the ever-gorgeous vocals of Cerys Matthews. This is followed by a little swipe at city life in 'Londinium', with nice little details thrown in such as the M25. In fact, the general feel of several songs on the album seems to be an affectionate, lighthearted swipe at everything varying from the monarchy (the infectious 'Storm The Palace') to millionairesses ('She's A Millionaire'). In this it can often raise a smile, yet it is also an album that is quite capable of a softer undertone. This is particularly evident on the slow number, backed by harps, 'Bulimic Beats'. In many ways its in a similar style to 'Don't Need The Sunshine' from 'International Velvet' or 'Godspeed' from 'Papers, Scissors, Stone', but is definitely a surprise from a band normally famed for its loud and enjoyable vocals.

There's not one filler track here and although it's perhaps not as good as Catatonia's other albums, this is merely because the others are all so excellent. 'Equally Cursed And Blessed' is a real gem.

5 out of 5 stars A Pretty good L.P........2001-09-26

Stand out tracks are Londinium, Equally Cursed And Blessed, and Mulder And Scully, the strengths of Catatonia are manifold. The lyricsl quality is not only high, it's different, so in the above three examples, we have songs about city life, Princess Diana, and peculiar stuff happening, which make a nice change from love songs. The best thing about this group however has to be the melodies, which are always strong, bear repeated listening, and maintain the quality throughout the album. The vocal oddities of Cerys Matthews just make it that bit more interesting.

4 out of 5 stars What A Voice.......2000-12-16

Cerys Matthews has one of the most distintive voices that i have ever heard. Equally Cursed and Blessed is Catatonias third studio album and their most accomplised to date. Containing the Uk hit singles, Road Rage, Dead From The Waist Down, Mulder And Scully, Londinium and Karaoke queen its easy to see why Catatonia has amased a huge fan base in such a small time. Lets hope that on the next album Cerys can keep up the good work and write good songs as singable as Road Rage

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great listen.......2006-08-20

I bought the CD because of the Collective Soul song "Better Now" but the entire soundtrack is great. It's a great CD. And you should check out the movie as well. It's pretty funny.

2 out of 5 stars Cursed Soundtrack.......2005-05-09

I had the oportunity to listen this CD, but I am totally dissapointed, only I save four songs, the other songs are really painful, techno and stuff.
I like the son by Bowling for Soup, Lil' Red Riding Hood, is cool.

1 out of 5 stars STEVE RIZZO IS TO BE BLAMED FOR THE ALKALINE TRIO ATROCITY.......2005-04-21

The original "Fine Without You" is about 3 million times better than the techno garbage that it was remixed into. Please, if you've got no experience with Alk3, don't judge them based on the song that they for some reason let slip onto this soundtrack. My god. It's as if someone said, "hey, let's drop this stereotypically boring techno beat behind this song, and speed up the voice track a bit, that'll make it OMG AWESOME"... well, they were wrong. Seek out the Alkaline Trio/One Man Army Split EP if you want to hear the good version of this song, better yet, seek out any Alkaline Trio cd, and you'll find great music. As a matter of fact, bypass this soundtrack altogether, it sucks.

4 out of 5 stars Ecclectic is substance... yet, not really horror material.......2005-04-14

Cutting to the chase, Cursed the movie was a dreadful mess completely demolished by its undermining PG-13 rating. While it had decent acting, anything else that could have been decent was butchered by the affore mentioned rating snafu.
Cursed, the Soundtrack, fares better. It is one of those rare horror movie soundtracks that lacks the forbodding Parental Advisory sticker which also could be another means of selling out the genre to appeal to a more teen oriented crowd. Yet, the soundtrack does not suffer in the same vain that the movie did.
In fact, the soundtrack holds its own as it churns out a compilation of rock, electronica, and pop... all smoothly flowing from song to song. As an opener for the album, "Lil Red Riding Hood" by Bowling for Soup is both catchy and tongue in cheek. As an opening to a horror film it is a bit much satrical and not at all indicative of the 'suspensful' mood the film should have possesed. "Better Now" by Collective Soul is a wonderful song, but again, not something suited for a horror film. It has pop froth sound to it that makes it seem so lite to the doomed theme. As a matter of fact, the majority of the songs on this soundtrack lack any of that typical angst to be found in songs featured on a horror film. A good chunk of these songs are simple put, songs about life. There is hardly any tension, which is funny considering that in the liner notes, Craven states that music helps create the film. While all the songs on this album are really good, I can't help but wonder if... along with the PG-13 rating, the music is what aided with nuetering this werewolf flick. None of the songs really indicate any freaky happenings and give way to eerie thoughts of the films intense (um, when the werewolf flicked off the hero, it was tense because I thought people were gonna riot against the film creators mocking their intellegence) moments. Even the techno songs seem to lean more towards the chill out lounge party than the building dread of a woman becoming a beast. And if any song on this soundtrack is indicative of all that I've said, it would be the silly but fun and catchy remix of the Freaks Come Out at Night song. It is electronic and fast building, but it is more humerous to listen too than utilizing at as a force to conjure up dread for a frightening situation.
While the movie being nuetered is a damaging thing, this album being of the same vain is not nearly as bad. It just doesn't fit with the type of film it was intended for.
Overall... a good album. Great music... aweful concept.

5 out of 5 stars THE UNDEAD - First, Worst and Cursed.......2003-04-23

One amazing album by one amazing band. They have a sound that is a cross between The Ramones, The Dead Boys, and The Misfits all shoved into a bone crunching meatgrinder and blended together to make a flavor all it's own... Yum! An essential album for any punk / rock fan, I can't recommend this one enough. This is what all those new "punk" bands should sound like, catchy as hell and every song a hit. Get it, before The Undead get YOU!!!

5 out of 5 stars Contrary to "Green Day Fan's" opinion, the album artwork is like a delicious Marushka.......2007-02-07

Beginning with "Printemps" and ending with "Automne," Canada's This Cursed House carries listeners through a sepia-tinged summer. Immediately engaging songs like "Hexenhaus" and "Asleep In Leaves" announce quieter but equally insistent numbers like "Look To The Trees" and "As Dry As Bone."

Concluding with the slow-building "Cold Mouse Winter," which ends the album proper with a hand-clapping singalong chorus, Canada's follow-up to the teasing How Dare You EP continues to show a band already in a mirthful state of maturity and poised for greater things to come.

There is a certain Elephant 6 element to the palette of cellos, melodica, typewriters and glockenspiel scattered throughout This Cursed House. Fans of The Never, Saturday Looks Good To Me, and even The Arcade Fire and Joanna Newsome should find something to like here.

Canada, a band of multi-instrumentalists and visual artists from mid-Michigan, is currently esconced in studios recording their second full-length and songwriting alongside similarly wonderful band Page France.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD! You have to hear this!.......2006-12-27

The music is soothing, calm and overall amazing. The songs coincide with one another, making you wonder where one song begins and where it ends.
BUT, if you want to put these songs on your iPod, or computer or whatever, buy it from an online music store such as iTunes. The CD is copy-protected and cannot be imported onto your computer using iTunes or Windows Media Player. The CD and case aren't anything special anyways. Trust me.

I saw these guys play for about 15 people at CBGB last summer -- it was handsdown one of the best performances I ever saw to an nearly empty room.

I find it offensive that they get slapped with the "hardcore" label. They're a band that plays for the love of their own music while not being preachy about it. Very few bands that wave the banner of "hardcore" can even hold a candle to these guys.

Something tells me we're going to be hearing a lot more from this band in the not-so-distant future.

    4 out of 5 stars Someone.......2005-07-03

Called this talentless stoner/doom. I don't hear it. I love the "This sucks - listen to ______ instead" reviews. Very effective. I hear some early 90's noise, Black Flag, Discharge and Unsane influence. I've lots heard stoner and doom, this isn't. Go check out The Emissions From The Monolith Festival in Youngstown and research these genres. I worked a Cursed gig in Baltimore with a couple of other what I call "kiddie bands" and couldn't beleive they were part of the same tour package. Awesmome band and solid dudes. Guitarist played with three broken fingers on the old pick hand. Crazy.

        Album Description

"(Head Trauma) works its way under the skin, raising neck hairs while teasing us to pry open its psychological puzzle box." - LA WEEKLY

"A horror outing that revives the under-appreciated monster of the id to great effect." - MOVIE CITY NEWS

" Elicits effective creeps... a well-executed haunted house exercise that treads the psychological vs. supernatural line." - AIN"T IT COOL NEWS

You may have heard of the idea: you and your friends get together with a copy of The Wiard of OZ and a copy of Pink FLoy's Dark Side of the Moon. You press play when the Lion roars, and you're off on a wonderful synchronized odyssey of light and sound.

Well, this time we took Head Trauma, an indie horror film by Lance Weler (The Last Broadcast), and asked our friends to either write a song, or give us an existing tune, that would sync perfectly. Park the Van Records lent both the roster and the staff, and the result is this wounderful soundtrack companion-a compilation that includes new songs from Bardo Pond, The Capitol Years, AWOL One, National Eye, and many other great musicians who spent their own time with Head Trauma.
