Watch out, mom and dad. If you don't treat your kids right, they're gonna up and start an alt-metal band to share the angst you've brought on them with the world. After all, who needs therapy when you've got a million kids hearing your pain on MTV? Staind has never been a band to gloss over personal issues. They've given their albums names like Torment and Dysfunction, and their lyrics delve deep into singer Aaron Lewis' difficult past. Contrary to the title, Staind's third release, Break the Cycle, sticks with the tormented cycle, covering the same themes of heartbreak, self-doubt, and broken homes.

Lewis has almost three decades of personal material to mine, and as familiar as his issues are, Break the Cycle still feels like a new, honest look into difficulties that can hit people across the board. "Waste," a song written to a fan who committed suicide, is particularly poignant as it grabbles with Lewis's empathy and anger for a boy he's never met. "Outside" is another album standout. It's a slower, partially acoustic number that builds on its own emotion. The songs on Break the Cycle are drenched in melancholy melodies and slow, heavy riffs typical of the sensitive side of the alt-rock genre. Lewis sometimes breaks out into either a hearty yell or a throaty gurgle that sounds like the devil vomiting ("Can't Believe"), but the best songs keep his passion a little more controlled. You've probably heard rock like Break the Cycle piping from mainstream radio stations already, but Lewis's ability to turn his breakdowns into his art should capture a new round of fans happy to find kindred spirits in the band. --Jennifer Maerz

4 out of 5 stars This is how rock should be -- real and gritty.......2007-04-19

Staind's Break the Cycle really pushes the boundaries of metal in terms of power. Singer Aaron Lewis' lyrics are the foundation for this album. It's filled with pain, despair, and real problems without the annoying "f*** everything kill everyone satan blah blah" heavy metal stereotype. Staind's music is haunting, to say the least, but at the same time, delicate. The guitars and drums blend perfectly with each song. Then again, some of the music could be better. I loved the song "Waste", but the instrumentals didn't fit with the words. With topics ranging from broken friendships ("Fade") to teenage suicides ("Waste"), Staind dares to be real to its audience, and has done so for the past 11 years.

4 out of 5 stars its not dysfunction, but its good.......2007-02-20

Staind's "breakthrough" album, Break the Cycle, is a very good album. I'm surprised I say that, because usually when a band goes from an album like Dysfunction to an album like Break the Cycle, I'd say they sold out. However, I believe this is a different case. Break the Cycle is not much like Dysfunction, and it sure is hell isn't like Tormented, but it is extremely good in my opinion. I don't think the album is soft, I think it is not as hard as their previous albums. The disc has some gems on it, "Its Been Awhile" being one of them. Others include "Pressure" and "Epiphany". I give it 4 stars because, quite frankly, I don't believe it is their best, but I do believe that it is a really good album.

4 out of 5 stars It'll take more than bleach and psychotherapy to get this Staind out.......2006-12-30

I recently listened to this album again and it took me back to my high school years when I was a angry teenager and this album really meant something to me. Staind can relate to the pre teen high school crowd because they make the kind of music that you'd want to listen to after getting into a screaming match with your parents. Running up to your bedroom and slamming the door behind you, you could slip on your headphones and listen to any one of Aaron Lewis' teenage angst driven songs on this CD, epitomized by "For You", the musical equivalent of flipping the bird at the parental unit. After it's over you'd get a shot of adrenaline. Flinging open the door you'd say something like "See mom and dad, I'm not to blame for my problems with other people, it's all you! Aaron Lewis speaks the truth!"

I can't forget those years fast enough

When was in school it seemed like everyone had this album, from the truly angry and bullied kids, to the fairly well adjusted and the salutatorian, who was angry that his 3.95 GPA couldn't be rounded up to a 4.0, justifying his purchase of the album.

In the label filled world of music, Staind is classified as nu metal, a genre of music where the lead singer complains about his many misfortunes and failed upbringing. On this album, Staind does this quite well and it has their most well known songs, like "For you" "It's been awhile", "Epiphany" and "Outside" I may not like this album as much as I used to when I was a teen, but it did get me into hard rock and grunge, leading to my interest in bands like Soundgarden, and for that I'll give them their due, and I have a soft spot for epiphany and a few other songs, so it isn't terrible, but for me the music hasn't aged well and doesn't sound as hard and edgy as it did in high school. After listening to Lewis' socioeconomic themed "Open Your Eyes" and "Pressure", about one of his bad experiences with drugs, all I did was shake my head in disbelief that at one time I actually thought this was great music.

Some reviewers say this album is Staind's best while hardcore fans say they sold out with this one. I say they sold out with their next album 14 shades of grey, which has a bunch of weepy ballads that were better suited for adult contemporary stations. This trend has continued up to their most recent album Chapter V. This album may not be a "hard" rock album like "Tormented", but it sounds harder than future stuff

You can only like Staind for as long as you can relate to Aaron Lewis. Once you realize that he's now a successful sell out ballad happy artist who's wallowing in his past in a desperate attempt to sell albums, you'll find them annoying. Still I think you'll be forgiven by most people if they find this disc in your collection, because it has their best songs that are still worth a listen every once in awhile.

4 out of 5 stars Acceptional.......2006-12-19

This record was the first incredibly gripping angst/rock record i had ever purchased. Right from 'Open your eyes' to 'Take it' it is a journey of waves of emotion and sincerity, at times depressing yet honest and uplifting come each chorus song by song. Truly an everlasting work of art as far as i'm concerned but unfortunately their only successful record and one that is up their with my favourites. It was only last night i was surrounded by a few people who happened to say how much they hate this band but in all truth, it makes me appreciate STAIND so much more when i see that they aren't admired by most 'common' people. I wear my tatoo of their logo on my lower back with pride.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good CD.......2006-11-13

This is the best Staind CD that I have heard. All the tracks are really good. It makes me want to buy more Staind CD's. Aaron Lewis has one of the greatest voices in the hard rock/metal arena being able to really crank it out for a hard hitting song and slow it down and really sound good for a more low key song. Buy the cd, you will definitely not be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars A great voice from the past silenced too soon.......2006-05-24

Here is a selection of popular lieder by Fritz Wunderlich, who died tragically at age 36, silencing one of the century's great voices. Surely no accounting of great artists who died before their maturity could be complete without Wunderlich's name.

Here he displays the wonderful timbre, range and sensitivity in his voice, which was conspicuously consistent across the range, regardless of the music he was interpreting or the venue in which he performed. The character of his voicing, enunciation and the structure of his tone and vibrato are virtually without fault throughout this recording, made in the studio with both accompanist and orchestra in 1963, three years before his untimely death.

I bought this to hear his interpretation of Beethoven's only song cycle, "To the Distant Beloved." The notes to this issue concentrate on the music-drama inherent in the songs. I wouldn't call this accounting of the Beethoven as dramatic as singers perform today. It is miles ahead of the inadequate concert performance recorded a year or two back by Goerne and Brendel but, in terms of drama, Wunderlich's work is neither as dramatic or episodic as recordings by Stephen Genz and Thomas Allen.

However, no singer quite has Wunderlich's instrument, a firm, supple and sensitive voice that adjusts to any music and any situation. It is also a bit unfair to compare the baritones above to Wunderlich's tenor.

I found equal pleasure in his renditions of Haydn's lesser known and lesser quality songs and the group of orchestral Strauss lied performed on this disk. Wunderlich performs the Strauss with far more drama and flair than the Beethoven, where he seems almost an introverted lost sould seeking lost love.

All told, this is a treasurable tome from one of the great singers in history in good mid-1960s sound that has dimension, quality and depth. The soloist may be a bit more forward than we epxect in the period-influenced new century but this is no matter. Here is an exhibition of singing that is above criticism and beyond approach. Even the greatest singers in history would weep gladly upon hearing this CD. So will you.

The rich-toned, musically elegant, always dignified contralto Marian Anderson (1897-1993) is probably best known as the first African-American to sing at New York's Metropolitan Opera House, but by the time she did (in the mid '50s), her once burnished, glorious voice was no longer at its best. Years before, when she was not permitted to sing in the Daughters of the American Revolution's Constitution Hall (or any other hall in the U.S. capital), she gave a concert in the open air, in front of the Lincoln Memorial, which was attended by press, dignitaries, and a crowd of more than 75,000. Much of her late work is well known--arias from Verdi's Un ballo in maschera, spirituals, and the like--but this CD also allows us to hear the voice when it was young--in the 1930s and '40s. One can almost hear Schubert's trout ("Die Forelle") dancing around in the water, and an aria by Scarlatti shows Anderson's coloratura abilities--the big voice could be scaled down to intimate, chamberlike proportions. She brings her intelligence and textual insights to other songs by Schubert and Brahms as well. This is a marvelous collection and a fine tribute to an American original. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Marian Anderson - an outstanding collection.......2003-05-03

This CD with recordings of Marian Anderson between 1936 and 1952, should be heavily promoted. The CD gives listeners a fantastic opportunity to hear the singer in a variety of song styles and languages. I heard her sing live, once, in the 1960's and was stunned then by her vocal skills and musicality. This is the first record or CD which truly reflects her amazing talent.

1 out of 5 stars Not for me.......2005-12-13

Another hyped up band with a lead singer that sure as hell is another wannabe poser who tries too too hard . I can't even take this guy seriously. It seems he just wishes he had it hard. Just watching the unplugged video said it all. I you want to hear depressing or just plain out Real music from a person who speaks the truth about his hard life than check out Mike Ness(Social Distortion) or Layne Staley(Alice In Chains). These are two songwriters who spoke nothing, but the truth about there Real Hard times unlike Aaron Lewis or whoever that poser is.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad For Nu Metal.......2004-05-05

Actually, thid CD is not so bad for nu metal. I myself despise nu metal, but after hearing It's Been Awhile on KNAC, I decided to get it. It's not too bad, once you get used to it. I can be kind of depressing sometimes, but that is expected for a nu metal CD. I got this clean version because I don't really go for a lot of swearing in the music. It kind of ruins the song. So I wouyld call this the only nu metal CD worth getting.

3 out of 5 stars depressing.......2003-01-12

never heard a more depressing album than this.
whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, i'm not really sure. sure, people may relate a lot to the whole album being that it speaks what they go through and feel. but one wonders if that doesn't actually fuel the depression and magnify it. and aaron sounds on the verge of crying... almost whining at some parts, but i guess that's the whole point. personal favourite track is 'fade'.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best rock albums out there!.......2002-12-12

I bought this CD after hearing "It's Been Awhile" (which is one of my favorites, and one of the best songs on the CD) on the radio a lot, and since I am somewhat of a fan of Limp Bizkit. But even though Fred Durst discovered and mentored this band, they sound nothing like them. I definitely recommend this version if, like me, you want to avoid the cursing on this CD (and there is some), or if you are a parent wanting to get this CD for your teenager (this one is not for kids under 15).

However, not all the tracks have cursing in them (like "Epiphany" and "Outside"), which are also some of the best tracks on the CD, along with "Fade" (my personal favorite), and "For You". I give this a 4 out of 5, because I don't like every track on the CD (track 1 and "Waste", which uses the "F-word" repeatedly are the ones I dislike the most). Also, Aaron Lewis doesn't curse as much as Fred does, which is a plus.

4 out of 5 stars Tough music for tough times.......2002-05-06

This Cd is a very good cd. Aarron lewis is a great song writer, probally one of todays better writers. True almost all of the songs are somewhat dark. That is okay because I don't like to hear good day sunshine all the time. Almost all the songs are worth listening except for the one where he just screams a bunch.
This cd is great for when you're going to tough times. Just listen and its weird how sometimes you can really relate to it. Over all I feel this is one of todays better cd's. Plus he doesn't cuss as much Fred Durst does.

      5 out of 5 stars Great cd.......2001-06-19

This cd is great. The bonus track is a perfect add on to the cd. Their cd follows their first one with a great mix of guitars and drums. Aaron Lewis just makes the cd better with his voice. The cd is a must have and greatly exemplifies what music should be.

5 out of 5 stars break the cycle - a must have title........2001-06-16

since their initial discovery by limp bizkits Fred Durst, staind have been featured in such great albums and live tours as family values '99 and the forth coming Reading festival 2001. Their first commersial album - dysfunction - was a quick fire hit, but nothing could prepare the awaiting fans for this new release. break the cycle is ground breaking. Its quality is comparable to that of Nirvana's Nevermind, and Limp Bizkit's Significant other. The origional sound and amazing lyrics are fantasitic, and now with a studio version of family value '99s 'outside', this album is an essential purchase. Get it, Enjoy it, Love it.

      Album Description

Aussie edition of the alternative metal act's 2001 album. 14 tracks including one exclusive live bonus track, 'Outside' by vocalist Aaron Lewis & Limp Bixkit's Fred Durst.

      Album Details

Fred Durst has A&R'd this record however production credit goes to Josh Abraham (Limp Bizkit, Korn) with the mixing courtesy of Andy Wallace (Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana). Described as a quantum leap forward from their debut album 'Dysfunction' from 1997, this album's 14 tracks are both more brutally intense and more melodically expansive than their debut effort. Track 14 'Outside' is an Australian only bonus.

      Album Description

A continuation of the infinite cycle, twilight music for rainy drives and break-ups. Love without safety-belts: your heart through the glass at 75 mph. "degree of focus": Recorded by a guy with a guitar, some digital equipment, and a home studio, these songs are confessions of lost loves and broken hearts. The album is a release point for the things that were never said but should have been talked about long ago. They're not perfect, and they aren't trying to be. Currently, the starfirefive has become a two person collaborative and is further developing the scope of its sound: still not perfect, still not trying to be, still singing songs of stars, of life support and balancings.

It doesn't happen very often these days that you find a great dumpling. Pork and spiced just right. The same goes for love. That's what makes this CD right on.

There's the anticipation, there's the memory, the memory of your mother and the time she took you to Hushang for the first time and you had a Pu Pu Platter and the best was of course the dumpling.

This CD is about the trip to finding that love. From seeing the intended, believing the intended is going to be constant never ending producer of that great feeling, and then the anguish of realizing that the kitchen is filled with a bunch of Mexicans using tortillas to wrap the dumplings.

Somehow the track 11 is the answer to the quandry.

Listen to it and it'll all make sense.

5 out of 5 stars born to stare at stars on ceiling walls.......2002-05-06

not long ago, for a fleeting moment, i was happy. since then, i have spent countless hours trying to recapture that moment. it's on the horizon. always in sight, never in reach. i fear that i will waste a lifetime searching... maybe it's closer than it seems-maybe not. maybe it's my degree of focus.

degree of focus captures, qutie beautifully, this familar struggle. slivers of something familiar grab your attention, only to disappear and reemerge as something new, something foreign, probably something you've been searching for...

      five stars-starfirefive!

5 out of 5 stars 'visceral third degree'.......2002-04-19

Raw emotionality bleeding through all our best tourniquets, you clamp on the smile but the stains show through. This is everything you wanted to say but couldn't, the kind of cd you buy and then leave on the doorstep of that certain someone without a note or a name. Visceral and burning with an aching sadness and a sweet nostalgia all blended in together. Sometimes harmonious, sometimes discordant, always real and honest and pure.

5 out of 5 stars best when played alone.......2002-03-03

like wandering an empty house asking questions and proposing answers only for yourself, yet never reaching a total conclusion. a day of reflection complete with rain, dueling voices putting doubt and hope in mind, recollections of past events that incur second guessing, and thoughts of events that haven't happened yet.
