5 out of 5 stars 4.8.......2006-10-02

Probably one of the best cd's to come out in the whole 80s decade. Great guitar work from a young Adrien Vandenberg along with some great tunes. Brings back great memories, but i must say it still sound fresh! Thank god for Wonded Bird for making this available again. Very strong cd that has stood the test of time. A must have!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Adrian Vandenberg's first solo record . . ........2006-03-07

. . . and still his best one (although the other two were really good also).

"The Flying Dutchman" (he stands 6'5" tall!) is a great guitarist. He had a solid trio of musicians backing him up.

The best songs on here are "Your Love Is In Vain", "Burning Heart", and "Nothing To Lose". There is a power ballad here ("Burning Heart" - not as good as the ballads on his next two albums), but the rest of this is your early 80's hard rock. There is not really any "speed metal" on this release, but there are three fairly uptempo songs here ("Ready For You", "Too Late", and "Out In The Streets"). Most of them feature acoustic and electric guitars in the same song. This is one of the first hard rock releases I remember hearing that. It's a unique combination that worked well here. Adrian Vandenberg has a great flair for the genre, and he produced a very unique style of hard rock that holds up well, even after more than 20 years from its release.

Why these guys were never huge in the USA is a mystery to me. But you're missing out on some great music if you overlook them. And be sure to listen to Vandenberg's other two CD's - Heading For A Storm and Alibi - I think the latter probably showcases Adrian's guitar skills the best.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT DEBUT.......2005-10-03

I purchased this on vinyl when it first came out and it became an instant favorite and remains so. I was also fortunate enough to see the band sometime after that. Call it hair metal or whatever you want, I choose to simply call it very good music. No, they didn't create anything new with this release but who cares, how many bands REALLY do? I love the songs and I love the musicianship, everything else is moot. I have no problem recommending this to any fan of good hard rock.

4 out of 5 stars Vandenberg's debut.......2005-04-03

Vandenberg (1982.) Vandenberg's first album.

In the eighties, there were many power rock acts that were trying to make it big - and they were stationed all around the world. Many of the bands came from Europe. Among these groups was the little-known Dutch act, Vandenberg. The group was named for its mastermind, an excellent guitar player of the day named Adrian Vandenberg. Also in the group were vocalist Bert Heerink, drummer Jos Zoomer, and bassist Dick Kemper. The band never really made it big, in comparison to other similar acts of the day, and only made a couple of albums before calling it a day. The first of which, which was self-titled, arrived in 1982. Read on for my review.

Vandenberg's debut is a solid power rock/hair metal album, through and through. I won't deny that it's nothing revolutionary to the genre, but I feel that Adrian Vandenberg is a seriously underrated guitarist. And it doesn't help things any that the only other really famous Dutch rock guitarist in the world (Eddie Van Halen) is probably the most popular rock guitarist of all time. Still, Vandenberg is long overdue for some credit! Very few musicians of this period were able to do both acoustic and electric stuff well, but he proves that he can do both in many a place on this album. Future Vandenberg releases would feature less acoustic stuff, which was somewhat of a shame since he could do it so well. The album serves up plenty of the fast-paced, hard and heavy rockers you'd expect a band in the day to serve up, along with a few tracks that explore a more melodic and sometimes acoustic side. The album doesn't have a single weak track, but at the same time, I wouldn't really say that this album was anything revolutionary to the genre. Still, if you're a classic metal fan from a decade when rock and roll still rocked, Vandenberg's music will be right up your alley.

Sadly, Vandenberg never got the proper credit and this ultimately results in the band's catalogue not being readily available in most stores. The band's stuff is much more readily available in European countries, where the group achieved a slightly higher level of fame. Domestic versions of the band's albums CAN be found, but ultimately it may just be easier to import them.

With all the hair metal acts of the eighites, Vandenberg was an easy one to overlook - which is a shame, since they really could rock. The band released a few more albums after this, and after those, Adrian Vandenberg briefly participated in the classic power rock supergroup Whitesnake (he played the guitar solo on the classic hit Here I Go Again), before finally fading into obscurity. If you're a fan of eighties metal and you're trying to find some excellent acts of the day you may have overlooked entirely, consider checking out Vandenberg. It's doubtful any fan of the genre will be disappointed with Adrian's own breed of classic hard rock.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars European melodic metal.......2007-03-27

Vandenberg was a metal group from the Netherlands that released three CDs in the early 1980s. They deserved more recognition than they achieved: their songs were melodic, and they featured superb guitar work. The main benefit to owning this CD is the remastering: the sound is crystal clear. The selection of songs on the first CD is also much better than on the competing Best of Vandenberg collection. This compilation, however, should have been limited to the first CD, which showcases the band at its best. The second CD, unfortunately, consists mainly of unreleased material from the archives, and could have been omitted.

4 out of 5 stars Make it about 4.5 stars and a must for Vandy fans!.......2004-04-10

This is a bit of pricey 2-CD set, but if you dig Vandenberg, you have to consider getting this! The first disc is pretty much a greatest-hits collection. But as with any greatest-hits collection from about any artist, one can complain about omitted tracks. In this case, the studio version of "Friday Night" and the awesome instrumental "Prelude Mortale" are missing. But overall, disc 1 hits most of the highlights from Vandenberg's catalog and is 75 minutes long.

Interestingly, you'll definitely need to enjoy the track, "Burning Heart", as it appears here three(!) times. The very first track is "Burning Heart (2004)" and it's a very worthy version. This one features more acoustic guitars, a few electronic percussion flourishes and some symphonic-sounding backing as well as some electric guitar. Sometimes when an artist says that they've got a "2004" version of an older song, they ruin it by making it "modern rock" or "nu-metal". Not here. As for other versions of "Burning Heart", the original studio version closes out disc 1. Disc 2 closes out with an all-acoustic version of "Burning Heart", though you can still hear some strings (violas, cellos, violins) in a few spots. Overall, I really enjoyed the new versions.

Disc 2 is what is really a treat for the fans. It contains 7 demo versions and 3 live tracks. The demos are really eye-opening - they sound almost album-quality. It's fun to hear these demos and see what made it to the albums. The live tracks are quite cool and "Friday Night" is present, taken from a gig in Japan. Another rare track "Roll Through The Night" is also served up from a concert in the USA.

If you like Vandenberg, you'll want this one even if you've got the studio albums. So it's pricey but worth it.

This is Adrian Vandenberg's band before he joined Whitesnake.Actually,he never got to play on a Whitesnake album. If you really want to appreciate his talent you've got to hear this album.I could do without the last three tracks, but the rest of the album is grade-A stuff. If you like hard rock,it's a must have.

3 out of 5 stars Decent, but not first rate.......2002-06-06

Basically Burning Heart and Wait really did anything for me. Reminds me a lot of Whitesnake or XYZ.

5 out of 5 stars "BURNING HEART" ALONE GETS 5 STARS!.......2001-04-20

Adrian Vandenburg aka "The Flying Dutchman", really knows how to write, compose and play the guitar. "Burning Heart" is nothing short of a masterpiece composition. One of my all-time favorite songs. I have loved it ever since the first time I heard it as a teen and it remains very close to my "burning heart" today. This song will stay with me ALWAYS.

The CD in it's entirety is 3 1/2 stars; it's worth more than one listen. I have heard Adrian play live with Whitesnake and he's amazing. He has such a broad range of emotions he pulls from his heart to his fingers to the guitar.

Some other fabulous songs here are "Prelude Mortale", "Different Worlds" and "Fighting Against the World." Adrian is predominant in these songs. I need an instrumental Adrian CD! The singer, Bert Heerink is good but I'd like to hear just Adrian playing...

3 out of 5 stars Contains some good rockers........2000-03-01

This collection of songs from Vandenburg isn't bad. I've had the cassette for some time and still give it a listen every once in a while. I don't think that most of the songs are that original or memorable, but they still have good energy and are listenable. Adrian Vandenburg plays very well indeed; and while I'm not big on the vocalist, he still gets the job done. My favorite tunes are "Burning Heart" and "Different Worlds." "Burning Heart" would have to be the most memorable song of this collection--the guitar intro is very good. Vandenburg put out some decent melodic hardrock. Worth a listen.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Vandenberg's second release.......2006-03-07

Adrian Vandenbergs second offer is a solid hard-rocking effort as was the band's self-titled debut.

This begins with the rockin' "Friday Night" - an ode to beginning weekend celebrations away from work. All office workers in 9-5 jobs should relate to this one well.

The next two songs "Welcome To The Club" and "Time Will Tell" are OK to good songs - not outstanding but good. The ballad "Different Worlds" is AWESOME - acoustic and electric guitars are used. Lyrically this laments a lost love with "we should not be apart, just listen to your heart, different worlds keep us apart." That song is one of Vandenbergs best, and is a fine display of the classical guitar that has inspired Adrian Vandenberg's play.

Give "The Flying Dutchman's" three solo records a serious listen - he can play with the best of 'em.

4 out of 5 stars Pre-Whitesnake: Quality musicianship overlooked in the States.......2006-01-18

This is not as good as their first record but it is a must have because of Adrian's history and their professionalism. He graduated with a degree in art history which influenced him to pursue classical training. These are very talented musicians who each carry their weight in the band. The vocalist is real sharp, reminiscent of Lou Gramm. He re-recorded "Burning Heart" with Vandenberg in 2004 and he sounds almost exactly as he did 22 years before. How many vocalists can boast that? The quality of their music surpassed the mainstream hard rock of the day. It is truly a shame that Adrian Vandenberg did not perform on either their 1987 LP or on 1989's Slip Of the Tongue including the bonus tracks that were released on subsequent records. His very first studio recording with Whitesnake was 1994's Restless Heart. And by that time, the members who were in the band in the 1980's, which is the decade Whitesnake is most known for, were all gone. I had the pleasure of seeing him live twice which convinced me he is worthy of being on stage with Whitensnake. He can play with the best of them. He is one of the most talented guitarists in the world. His approach to the guitar is different than some of the other "famous" and revered guitarists. The guitar(s) you hear on the 1987 LP, as it is most famously known as, were co-written and performed by John Sykes. You may remenber his long, wavy beautiful blonde locks as he fronted and played guitar for the band, Blue Murder. And BTW, Manic Eden is probably a band you may not easily recognize by name but you will recognize the members: Tommy Aldridge(drums, Whitesnake), Rudy Sarzo(bass, Whitesnake), Adrian Vandenberg(guitar, Whitesnake), and Ron Young(vocals, Little Caesar). Their debut CD was released in 1994.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Guitar Work!.......2004-03-17

Adrian is one of the founding fathers of the neo-classical movement. He plays beautifully and his sense of melody and technique are always well balanced. This CD is great to listen to and excellent learning tool for aspiring guitarists.

"Welcome to the club" and "Heading for a storm" are my favorite rock tracks. "Different Worlds" is a beautiful ballad with a great acoustic interlude and melodic solo/outro.

Thanks Adrian & Co. for such wonderful music!

4 out of 5 stars The Flying Dutchman..........2003-11-24

Vandenberg, led by Dutch guitarist Adrian Vandenberg, produced three albums in the early 80's. Heading for a Storm, their second release, is their most dynamic, and well-balanced effort.

Similar to a band like Dokken, Vandenberg's brand of metal is more melodic, with lots of runs and fills, sprinkled in between spunky chords. The guitar tone is clear and bright. Particularly on his solos, Adrian Vandenberg's guitar cuts cleanly and sharply through the mix. With influences from classical music, the man has some impressive skills, somewhat reminiscent of Michael Schenker. His unique creative solos, display technical ability, yet always seem appropriate to the song. Unlike many, he rarely plays to excess, maintaining control and a sense of melody throughout.

The quality of the songs is excellent, and there isn't a dud among the nine tracks. The band is probably at their best on the up tempo songs like This is War, Rock On, Time Will Tell, and Friday Night. Adrian's guitar is extremely active, constantly keeping things interesting. Vocalist Bert Heerink performs admirably on moody ballads, as well as hard rockers. While he doesn't have the range or the emotion, of a Don Dokken, or Joe Lynn Turner, his singing style fits in well with Vandenberg's different musical approaches.

Fans of melodic 80's metal, should check out perhaps the second most famous rock guitarist to come from the Netherlands, after Eddie Van Halen. While not a rock guitar icon, Adrian Vandenberg is a flashy and talented guitarist. The music is energetic, fun, and very listenable. The only downside is that the album is less than 40 minutes long.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Adrian Vandenberg - guitarist extraordinaire.......2006-03-07

Vandenberg's third and final release came out in 1986. This guy belongs in the same class as guitarists like Tony MacAlpine, Vinnie Moore and Micheal Schenker. Metal guitar with classical overtones - he is great.

One of my favorite ballads of all time is "How Long" from this release. Great bass accompaniment with the slow guitar sounds - it amazes me that this was never released as a single as I'm sure it would have been a huge hit.

The other ballad here is "Once In A Lifetime" that is also excellent. I'm sure Adrian Vandenberg probably got a higher paying gig with Whitesnake in the late 1980's, but I wish he had continued to write things like this - I really miss him.

This album is a good listen from start to finish. The all out rockers are "Dressed To Kill", "Fighting Against The World", and the incredible instrumental "Kamikaze". Vandenberg's fret work on "Kamikaze" make this a must-buy along with the ballads.

"Prelude Mortale" is a short instrumental of classical acoustic guitar. Put this one in the same league and Edward Van Halen's "Spanish Fly" from VAN HALEN II.

The rest of this straight ahead hard rock. I had this on cassette back in 1985 and it had not been available on CD's until Wounded Bird Records re-released this 80's gem a few years ago, with Vandenberg's other two albums. Can't tell you how delighted I was to see this again. If you see this at a good price, grab it - you never know when it will be unavailable again.

4 out of 5 stars Very solid record.......2004-04-04

First of all, it's nice to see this great record from 1985 re-issued. The ridiculous import prices made me say "alleluia" when Wounded Bird re-issued it several years ago. (By the way, I purchased it from Wounded Bird for about $10.99 if I recall correctly).

This is Vandenberg's third and final studio disc. The production is pretty clear and the instruments and vocals balance well. The songs retain a strong flavor similar to those on "Heading for a Storm". Standout tracks are the uptempo tracks "Voodoo" and "Fighting Against the World". "All The Way" and "Pedal to the Metal" kick off the disc in a rockin' fashion.

Another highlight is "Prelude Mortale" which leads into "Alibi". "Prelude" is a solo classical piece from Adrian and it's terrific. Apparently, Adrian's mom loves his classical guitar playing, so he always tried to put at least piece on Vandenberg's records. "Alibi" is a truly catchy tune with a hooky chorus.

Overall, I wish Adrian had never left for Whitesnake. As good as Whitesnake's "1987" album was, Adrian only played one solo on one song. All three Vandenberg albums stand up well to this day, so search them out if you like great songs with stellar guitar parts.

3 out of 5 stars The usual path by unusual players.......2006-03-13

As has been said elsewhere, Vandenberg perhaps had too much talent for their own good. They could play anything and everything they wanted so why not add a little of their own signature to the genre of 80's hard rock? The bad bits first eh?

This is very much an 80's hair metal album. The tunes are fairly lightweight and the lyrics are fairly silly.

The good bits are that this album hangs together well as a testament to the skills of Adrian Vandenberg - who I believe designed all the darn cool cover art for the bands albums.

Tracks like Friday Night and Welcome to the Club breeze along wonderfully, even if their collective IQ is up there with CC Devilles pet budgie. Hard to knock a track like Heading for a Storm though. This has some threat and dynamics to it. The whole this is produced well too.

Whitesnake fans may also like this as a curio, and certainly, despite it's age (original release 1983) the production and musicianship has aged very very well. The genre is taken a few hits in the meantime though

3 out of 5 stars Excellent guitar work, lyrics need some work........1999-01-04

Vandenberg is a very talented musician, and excellent guitarist, I've noticed that he has done some work with Whitesnake, on their 1987LP "Whitesnake", that had a couple of "chart-busting" toons. He's also done work with various other artists. The band Vandenberg were really good, the drum work, the bass work, and keyboards were great. The singing and the lyrics were mediocre.

4 out of 5 stars Dutch hard rock at its best..........2000-11-04

That describes Vandenberg to a 't'. Lead by the young guitar wizard Adrian Vandenberg, this record mimicks the personality put into his axeslinging... quirky and pure fun. Rollicking rockers like "Your Love is in Vain" and the whirlwind "Nothing to Lose" are classics in any time period, while the gorgeous sorrow dripped ballad, "Burning Heart" is timeless. Memorable and solid hard rock from one of the true masters of the axe, who's talent was sadly lost in the shuffles with Whitesnake after disbanding his band. Those that love other Dutch rockers like Vengeance and Helloise will be delighted with this early 80s slice of pure hard rock mastery.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Rock & Roll!!!.......1999-10-10

This CD is a definite "must have collectible" for anyone who wants to listen to a CD from beginning to end, without having to skip over any songs, unike most of today's music artists CD's. This CD contains a wide array of music styles that are both timeless & classic. Songs included in this CD are acoustical tracks like "Burning Heart" plus heavy double bass drum pieces like "Lost in the City" which is a song that most people can relate to.It took me awhile to locate this CD simply because it gets reprinted only once every so often, so order yours today before its taken off of the market again.

    5 out of 5 stars oldie but a goodie!!.......1998-07-01

Now this is a real rock-roll band! Adrian Vandenburg, and the rest of the crew rock! Too bad bands of the 90's can't play like this. If you like the sound of a raging guitar, best be buying it, you"ll like it!!
