Rather than an ordinary film soundtrack, this might more accurately be considered an exceptional Loudon Wainwright album. A diehard Wainwright fan, director Judd Apatow explains in his liner notes that he asked the singer-songwriter to score Knocked Up, Apatow's first film since The 40-Year-Old Virgin, only to learn that Wainwright was about to embark on his next recording project with producer Joe Henry. The resulting album features material that Wainwright had written before the film score that the director wanted to use, other cuts that are instrumental snippets in the movie but are songs with lyrics on the album, and still others that take thematic inspiration from the film. While Wainwright so often writes lacerating and hilariously personal material, many of these songs are more like character studies, with a musical range that extends from the ragtime "So Much to Do" (one of two songs written with Henry) and the call-and-response of the chromosome ditty "X or Y" to the Brecht/Weill cabaret tinge of "Final Frontier" to the bluesy "Doin' the Math." Among the musicians providing stellar support are guitarists Richard Thompson and Greg Leisz and keyboardists Patrick Warren and Van Dyke Parks. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding work.......2007-08-02

I had not folowed the career of Loudon since Dead Skunk. Obviously it was a mistake as this is just an outstanding body of work. Particularly fond of the structure and composition of the second track "You Can't Fail me now"

5 out of 5 stars A Soundtrack That You Can Listen To.......2007-07-30

While a large portion of Strange Weirdos was done for the soundtrack of the film Knocked Up, it works brilliantly as an album. Loudon continues to write in his own unique style that can be quirky one moment and lovingly tender the next. His partnership with Joe Henry works a treat.

5 out of 5 stars What a Great Combination:Knocked Up and Loudon.......2007-07-16

What a great way for new generations to discover Loudon Wainwright III. I've been a fan of his for years and would have bought the cd eventually anyway but after seeing the movie "Knocked Up" and realizing his music was the soundtrack, I rushed to order it. I love "Grey in L.A." and of course, "Daughter" and have grown to love every cut, even the instrumentals. His lyrics are quirky and memorable and every song is a winner. I honestly think this music can appeal to a wide range of listeners, young and old.

5 out of 5 stars helps me to relax.......2007-07-16

great songs, the music just relaxes me from a stressed life that i live.

3 out of 5 stars It is ok, but.................2007-07-13

This CD is OK, however I was expecting a little more of a sound track type CD. So good CD, just not what I wanted.

5 out of 5 stars Good News; It's Great.......2007-07-16

Ok, a non-Forbert fan may not like this stuff, but the real trick is not just liking this music but 'getting' it. Since the singles-era of his early music, SF's work has not been written nor produced for mass consumption. Of course, Big Macs are made for mass consumption, and look at what those do to you. So, with the recognition that this album might have a limited audience, this is a GREAT Forbert album. I was pleased to discover that SF is still writing clever and honest music, and while his sound is still a little overly-produced for me (too many back-up vocals and tamborines sometimes), this album has some wonderful rhythms and sounds. Favorites are The Baghdad Dream (not an in your face anti-war song, as much as a "what is going over there?" rocker), I Will Sing Your Praises (a surprising creationist hymn, SF style), Thirty More Years (a great composition around SF's now-familiar theme of life passing by . . .), and Simply Spalding Gray. Then there is the fresh re-do of one of pop music's greatest all-time hits, Romeo's Tune. What a gift. He must have performed this a million times in the last 25 years, and he delivers it here with appropriate energy and relevance. GREAT ALBUM!

4 out of 5 stars Radiofriendly hit machine from Forbert. Not so much edge, but hey enjoy it!.......2007-07-04

Steve Forbert has included a new version of Romeos Tune on this new CD. And most of the CD is in that musical genre so to speak.Steve Forbert has included a new version of Romeos Tune on this new CD,and most of the CD is in that musikal "hummin genre" so to speak. This is a musikal gem overall, that become better and better with more listning. Then suddenly it bang`s into your`e soul, and leave some musical angeldust in your ear. Track 1 Middel Age is a typical Forbert gem. Walkabout rythm with a very hummin` tune. Happinnes speaks all over the track. Track 2 Strange Names follow up the "feel" and credibility of the previous track. Not edgy, but very earfriendly, and enjoyable to listen too. Track 3 Simply spalding gray it`s an another cup of tea. This has a touch of irish roots in the intro, but it demands quite more from you. A minor letdown in my ears. Track 4 Man, i miss that girl, brings us more or less back on the track again. Forbert voice had so much pain and feel alltrough. Quality shines. Track 5 You`re meant for me is in typical Forbert territory. It`s romantic, have a certain feel, and drizzel angeldust in your`e earchannels. Track 6 I will sing your praise, is the one with the spinal marrow cord touch. The one you can feel. Track 7 Something special, it`s more cliche ridden in a way. A minor letdown, but a good listen anyway. Anyway. The harmonica lifts it up above average. Track 8 My seaside Brown-eyed girl, has a very open soundpicture, where the instrument`s drizzel here and there and makes`it complete. Track 9 Baghdad Dream is the "rock and roller" on the CD. A mood changer, but it works.Lyricks are extremly good on this one, and yes it`s about the Irak war. Track 10 Thirty More Years, it`s a so so track. Average, but quite interesting. Track 11 Around the bend is the uplifting one. Brings joy to your`e heart. It`s instrumental, but hey who cares. It has that "x- factor". Track 12 Romeo`s tune. Greatness shines. What more can you say about Forbert`s biggest hit ever. This one has it all. Enjooooooy. All in all a great album, but some of the tracks are a minor letdown. But it`s a safe buy anyway. Forbert has quality, and never go out of style.....

4 out of 5 stars A must for Forbert fans.......2007-06-30

My first impression when I first listened to the CD was that it, (unlike other rescent Forbert albums), was a little too soft around the edges. And although the songs were great, I felt the music supporting them didn't fully extract the richness from them. However after keeping it in my car for a few days, It really grew on me, and now I accept it for what it is and as another Forbert masterpiece.
If the first listening doesn't hook you, the second one will. Or the third... Maybe fourth.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not Solid........2007-07-21

This album is good, but it's not as solid or captivating as Everready. Sometimes the featured artists really add to the song, but at other times they kill the momentum and intensity. Also a few of the choruses are kind of weak, but overall it's still a good album worth buying. Highlights are That Box, Fan or Foe, 2 Piece (amazing chorus) and You Don't Want it.

5 out of 5 stars Oh yeah.......2007-07-21

Message to the Black Man
Girl Crazy
Midwest Choppers
Get Ya Head Right
Big Scoob

4 out of 5 stars A Poetic Opera....With A Deep Message........2007-07-21

This is a great "collabos" CD. I mean it starts with "Kansas City Shuffle (Intro) and is a mad shocker! These cats are trying to pick up a hootchie and she straight jacks 'em! "Midwest Choppers" Hell yes!!! Classic Tech N9ne! This is a poetic track about rappin' and being at the top of your game! Dalima & D-Loc rap their asses off!! Krizz Kalico finishes this track off phat! "Misery" has Tech showing his gangsta prowess, don't cross Tech & his crew or go that life hereafter for real!!

"That Box" is my favorite song on the CD! It's definitely a Strange Music reunion. Skatterman & Kutt Calhoun have sweet ass freaky rhymes. They are looking for that maximum sex! It's all about getting that trim! The imagery is truly brilliant in this song and women will get wet! "Gangsta Shap" is like a gangsta walk...Kutt Calhoun is absolutely amazing here! The beats are mad fresh! There is homage to the other old school rappers, like LL Cool J. "Sex Out South" has our boys Kutt & Krizz teaming with Tech once again! We see them out getting trim, mad loving going on here and it is extremely graphic. Kutt shines mad on his flows, delightfully freaky too.

"Get Ya Head Right" has Tech chillin after a hard days work, getting rewarded with gettin' some straight "brain"! Money Hungry sings that lovely R&B style chorus (Way to go girls!) Snug Brim's sweet smokin' and affirmations make me want to hang with these cats, just to relax! "Fan or Foe" is all about those fake cats who jock you for fame, but they may have ulterior motives. T-Nutty has a deep flow here that gets the point across. "Girl Crazy (Crazy Love) is a solo track by Tech. All these women keep jockin' our boy and he just keeps getting his groove on, a true playa love song. And the girls keep coming back, way to go pimp!

"2 Piece" has a sort of reggae beat all about that street fightin' and set protectin'. Big Scoob is straight gangsta pimp. Joe Vertigo has street smarts that makes this jam awesome! Tech just takes it to another level with his affirmations of what will happen if you step up! Krizz Kaliko back up his cats with his bass in the background, sort of a fast punch, if you will. "Big Scoob" is one bad brother! He is the pimp of the hood and is out to get his! Tech has his game on lock and Big Scoob is there to back him up for real! "Yes Ya Can" has a bandalero beat. Shadow has funky, soul tinged rhymes, which makes this cut smooth. Tech comes in to throw the mack and he knows how to handle his. Big Krizz Kaliko comes in a little different and raps smooth, so smooth in fact that it almost sounds like he's singing.

"I Can Feel It" finds that our homie's wife has cheated on him, ouch, and he handles business. This is gangsta to a trifflin' ho! The spoken verses remind me of Vincent Price in MJ's Thriller! "Karma (Skit)" is a for real thang! Basically, what goes around comes around. "You Don't Want It" is eerie. Mr. Reese adds an old school rap feel. His rhymes are crisp and clear! Big Krizz Kaliko adds a gangsta affirmation and Prozak adds a tinge of gangsta rock, especailly his reference to the end of conflict!

"Message To The Black Man" is poetic and prolific, he is giving a history lesson for all the brothers and sisters out there. However, he isn't getting any support from the people he has support for. He also frowns on illegal downloading and bootlegging, as an artist, I say amen to that! Maybe he feels that their disloyalty makes him out to be a sellout, when he is only trying to support his family. "The P.A.S.E.O" is an R&B type jam, giving homage to his growing up and how he was living in his hood. He gives love to his family for real! Even if he has to apologize for some of his actions, he makes amends and is comfortable with his decisions.

This CD is a poetic gangsta opera! I love the parable like stories and it makes one wonder if they really have it bad in their neighborhood and if so, to make the best with what you have. (The only reason I gave this 4 stars, is because this is s poetic opera as to where he came from, whereas Everready had more of a rap style to it.) This a brilliant CD and if you like poetry, personification and CDs that tell a prolific story, then this disc has it all and more. Much love to Tech N9ne for doing this CD, thanks brother!

Album Description

STRANGE DAYS, first out in October '67, went to #3 and introduced the Doors classics "People Are Strange," "Love Me Two Times" and "Strange Days." In-depth liner notes by Barney Hoskyns, co-founder of online rock library Rock's Backpages. Two bonus extras include previously unreleased versions of "People Are Strange" and "Love Me Two Times."

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars My eyes have seen you.......2007-05-16

"Strange Days" continued the breakout of the Doors, back in the flowering of the 1960s music scene -- which is admittedly a great place to start. Their sophomore album showed no signs of a slump, polishing up the rough blues'n'rock of their first album, and continuing into weirder, more intense territory.

It opens with the dark, hallucinatory beauty of "Strange Days," with Jim Morrison's rich voice singing distantly, "Strange days have found us/Strange days have tracked us down/They're going to destroy/Our casual joys..." His melancholy vocals are totally at odds with the energetic drums, keyboard and bouncy melody.

It's followed by the affectionate-sounding "You're Lost, Little Girl," and the deliciously stompy-bluesy "Love Me Two Times." Having hooked listeners in, the Doors spill out a stream of bluesy rock'n'roll -- sometimes it's dusty and raw, and sometimes it's flavoured with keyboard. And at the end there's a haunting pair of slow, atmospheric rockers -- the darkly enticing "I Can't See Your Face in My Mind," and the sprawling electrobluesy "When the Music's Over."

"Strange Days" does pretty much the same thing as the Doors' first album -- a catchy intro, blues-rocky middle parts, and a haunting, long outro that lingers in your mind. The big difference is that in this album, their music is less striking, but it is more polished and experienced.

That polish is especially present in the music -- Robby Krieger played some brilliantly flexible guitar, whether it was lean rock riffs or a funky little tune, and John Densmore was equally good with some quirky drums. Ray Manzarek flavoured the whole thing with marimba and colourful waves of keyboard. Most of the time this worked -- the only real exception is the dark, mildly frightening "Horse Latitudes," which is a good experimental track, but it feels out of place.

But Morrison gave the music that extra boost into genius. He had a rich, full voice that could flower into a croon, a murmur, or an impassioned howl. And his songwriting was pretty much poetry, full of strange imagery and passions ("The face in the mirror won't stop/The girl in the window won't drop/A feast of friends/Alive, she cried/Waiting for me outside...").

The Doors continued doing what they did best in "Strange Days," a blend of blues and psychedelic rock'n'roll. Definitely a deserving classic.

4 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-04-19

As with the new issue of L.A. Woman I recently purchased the sound on Strange Days is phenominal. This should be an example of how re-releases should be handled. We, as customers, shouldn't settle for anything less.

Pros: The clarity of all the instruments is amazing. I can't say enough about the sound. I don't have a problem with the album being remixed because I think it's done for the better. The remixes are subltle enough to the casual fan that they probably won't even notice.

Cons: My only beef is there really aren't any "bonus" tracks on here. A live track or two would have been nice.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Release Brought Back To Life!.......2007-04-10

"Strange Days" was The Doors' sophomore effort, the attempt at bringing back for another round the kind of feverish, poetic magic attained in their classic debut. Few follow-ups have achieved the kind of artistic, sonic accomplishments The Doors got here which is why many consider "Strange Days" their best effort, second only to their first album. Now in light of the 40th anniversary of the band's introduction to the world, Doors engineer Bruce Botnick has taken all their albums and remixed them from the original master tapes, what he achieves here, as with the remastered debut, is a complete resurrection of a classic recording. The album now breathes and screams with fierce energy and detail. The opening title track is now a true gothic opus as the effect of the first synthesizers is better appreciated in Jim Morrison's menacing delivery of a world gone insane. John Densmore's drums are heavy and intense while Ray Manzarek's organ is more defined. "Love Me Two Times" is a ferocious blues rocker with a killer bass now more audible while the creepiness of "Horse Latitudes," a spoken-word piece Morrison wrote in high school, is more striking this time as many of the layered effects are clearer. "Moonlight Drive" has better piano/organ parts. Some purists have been scoffing at the remixing, claiming these are not the same albums. This is a wrong analysis, what Botnick has done is create a more clear, defined piece considering the older recordings suffered from the original technological setbacks of the 60s and in the case of the first album even the speed was off. Solos and instrumentals are easier to hear now and the sound quality is superior to anything previously released. This is the same debate that was sparked in 2002 when "Elvis: 30 #1 Hits" was released and was also bashed for taking the original masters and remixing them. These are the same songs, same vocals, same instrumentals, simply put back together to sound as they were originally intended to sound. "My Eyes Have Seen You For Example" has a sharper bass and piano section. Morrison's voice never plowed under, it is even more ferocious in this mix. The great epic "When The Music's Over" is a glorious powerhouse of musical expression and poetics mixed with rock. Morrison's frantic screams are brought up and Robby Krieger's masterful solo is also more detailed here. The song is a timeless work that is fitting for our current, uncertain times. In it Morrison speaks for a world caught in a war and a youth culture waiting to explode. If only he had known that in the Bush/Iraq era, his words would still be perfect for the times. "Strange Days" itself was originally released in 1968, right when Vietnam was starting to heat-up and more and more young Americans were returning in bodybags as others took to the streets. And yet what sets The Doors apart from other bands of the era is that their music is fitting for all times, all moods, because darkness is an ever present reality. Morrison was ahead of his time, this is more clear now than ever. His black leather-clad image of a wild, poetic frontman has been emulated countless times over, even his stage attitude was a precedent for Iggy Pop and Punk, listen to "Horse Latitudes" and you can see where Patti Smith was spawned. "Strange Days" is one of those great rock n' roll albums that will live on as long as there is music in the world, Jim Morrison will remain an icon for generations of rebels and the sound the Doors produced is set in stone. Now remixed and remastered, this album lives again, more potent, more dangerous than ever.

1 out of 5 stars Remixed!!!.......2007-04-03

Yes, the sound is great but the tracks are remixed, often with new vocal and instrumental parts. These are NOT the original mixes! Caveat emptor!

5 out of 5 stars Strange Flower.......2007-08-01

I picked up this CD from a record store in Sydney a couple of years ago so it has been out a while now. I got it by accident as I went back to get another CD. The store suggested Strange Flower as a replacement as the other CD wasn't in stock. The singer Aya is on another Naked music CD "Beautiful Tomorrow" by Blue Six. And Aya's CD has the same feel mellow and introspective. My favourite tracks are "Leaving for the Sun", and "I'll Never Give In"

Product Description

Ah, those Horrors, perhaps one of the most divisive bands to cross the Atlantic in recent memory. Mindless noise? Fashion victims? Absolutely not. The Horrors are one of the most complete, intellectualized, though-provoking bands out there. This is music for youth. It is unifying in its chaos, startling in its simplicity - all those things that music fans have been bemoaning as dead and gone. And now, its up to you, dear music fans, to allow the Horrors to take you on their journey back in time - to a time when music evoked fury, evoked interest, evoked debate. A time when you spent all your pennies at record fairs trying to find the most twisted explosions of sound ever pressed to vinyl.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A fun, noisy blast!.......2007-06-10

The Horrors come across like a cross between early Birthday Party and mid-period Damned with a hint of Radio Birdman thrown in. No doubt many will slag them off since they're young and cute but neither necessarily makes musicians worthless.

1 out of 5 stars Something old and something new.......2007-05-30

Ok, hard rock, meets pink floyd, meets the the munsters theme? Think Teacher leave those kids alone, meets metal in their hit " She is the new thing"
Or try this bum bum bum bum bum, bum bum bum bum bum.... the backbeat to Count in Fives....been done so many times. Every song has a super repitive beat, and is almost comical with their funny voices. I don't know whether to laugh or dance? All of their music is a horrible stolen 50's monster movie music theme....it's laughable. It's funny, but I am not sure it's creative or interesting. All the songs sound the same to me! It just doesn't do it for me.

4 out of 5 stars Bauhaus Meets The Standells.......2007-05-25

Pretty good 80's tribute band, if you like the Birthday Party you'll probably like this. A lot of this reminds me of "Junkyard" to be precise.
The best songs on here are the amazing "Count In Fives" and "She's The New Thing", which sounds exactly like the Stranglers. "Gloves" steals the guitar riff from Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Nicotine Stain". You could play "Count The Influence" all day but ultimately The Horrors have still turned in a very entertaining record. For all the carping I've made about their influences this is still more solid than anything else currently out there.

5 out of 5 stars SUPER FRESH AND PROMISHING!.......2007-05-23

Playing for first time the "strange house" the debut cd of the Horrors you get the feeling "Alas,i can breath again !". Dark deeply gothic and extremely sadistic lyrics with a definitely intriguing music transfer you in another world like those you experience in the deepest dungeons of your rpg games. If you have seen the video clip of the single "Sheena is a parasite" directed by Chris Cunningham I am sure you noticed some kind of perfectionism which is obvious in the entire cd. The producers of the work Jim Sklavounos of the Bad Seeds,Allan Moulder (Depeche Mode) and Nick Zinner leave no doubts about the quality of the whole work.
I Strongly recommend this cd to those the like this kind of music. Personally I love anything that brings new fresh air ... !

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite album.......2007-05-19

Best album I've heard in years. Primal, noisy, spooky etc. When you hear terms like horror punk, garage, even goth, one might think "pfft we've certainly heard that before" but these guys do sound unique. They are a breath of fresh air. Loud, noisy, brash, Adams Family organs, early goth and punk, garage twangy reverb guitars, stick figure physiques. What more could one want in a band? The USA is so infantile in it's acts that even decent singers like Gwen Stephani, Nelly Fertado, and Fergie are reduced to child-like nursery rhyme vocals over repetitive beats. Our rock is reduced to whiny, bratty emo kids with the same whine/scream vocals, the same lyrics, the same production, the same haircuts. We are way too steeped in R&B and Hip Hop culture on the main stream front. Oh, and Nickelback (gag reflex kicks in) whom I categorize as "rock for people who don't like rock". Most British acts that the zines herald now are kind of poor Franz Ferdinand type clones or boring balladeers. The Horrors remind me of more pure times in music. Sifting through record shops in the East Village for word of mouth underground bands. They make a joyous noise. Bravo! Anyone else wanna chime in?

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Album Description

"The sound of rainbows bursting through the tarmac of the big city." This is how NME described the sound of Scottish foursome the Cinematics. Like so many of the current crop of 80's influenced UK acts, the band elicits the cold, grey, stark and sometimes austere side of life in the North. Powered by tight grooves that demand movement and passionate, powerful and thoughtful vocals, the Cinematics also bring emotion and warmth. The end result is music that transcends any trends or underground niche.

Their debut album, "A Strange Education," is a stunning collection of dance-punk grooves and guitar interplay with lead vocalist Scott Rinning's ardent vocal delivery. Even in his early twenties, Rinning's voice reveals a power and gravity well beyond his years. The Cinematics' singles, "Break," and "Keep Forgetting," each find a place that resonates in your heart and in your mind. The stirring "Human" is one of those special songs that sends chills up your spine.

Already too "big" sounding for the small club stages they've been playing in America up to this point, the Cinematics live show is flawless. Powerful, tight and often inspirational, a Cinematics show reminds you of those special times when you saw legendary acts before the rest of the world.

The current single "Break" will be followed by "Keep Forgetting" and its brilliant video which captures the band in a modern version of classic French New Wave Cinema. "A Strange Education" cd will contain both of these songs' accompanying videos, as well as two additional live videoclips of the band performing on Dutch TV show "London Calling." The band is touring with Mute Math from March through May.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal........2007-05-25

This album gets better with each listen. It's VERY catchy, it's incredibly emotional, the lyrics really make you feel and think, and you can play it through start to finish without skipping a single song. Not bad for a debut!

Every song is brimming with passionate lyrics, incredible vocals, insanely catchy melodies and beats, and generally all around addictive qualities. I find new things to love all the time, and I can't even pick a favorite - I'm constantly thinking "oh this is the best one" "no, this one is" "no wait... this one is!" as the album plays. There really is no weak track.

I have quite literally been unable to listen to anything else since I bought it a few weeks ago - I'll switch to something different, thinking I'll get tired of it and regret it if I overplay it, and inevitably about 3 songs later I have to switch back to the Cinematics. It's just that good.

In addition to the brilliance of the album, they put on a shockingly great live show that is dripping with passion and talent. These guys are The Real Deal. They don't disappoint in the studio, and they don't disappoint on the stage. Don't miss out - check out this disc and see them live, too, if you can. You won't regret it and might just find your new favorite band!

PS - there is also a great Beck cover (Sunday Sun) as well. I find a lot of covers are generic and boring, but this one completely stands on it's own (as does every track). Check them out!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2007-04-15

Passionate with a spirit of punk and goth, almost like pre-Joshua Tree U2 at times and solo Peter Murphy at others, this is one of the best debuts to come out in ages. After an initial listen, I was ready to dismiss these guys as another in a long line of Interpol clones, but after a second attempt I was HOOKED. The closer - Asleep at the Wheel - is simply amazing; it begs to be heard loud. Can't wait to hear them live.

5 out of 5 stars You crazy Scots! You're awesome!.......2007-04-08

I recently heard The Cinematics live. They were opening for Mute Math (check them out, but not right now) in Minneapolis, and when they walked on the stage I'll bet most of the audience was thinking, "Please just get this over with so we can see Mute Math...." But then they started their set, and I present to you the progression of our collective thoughts:

-"Heh, his accent is funny."
-"Wait, they're playing now. This isn't so bad."
-"Hey, this song is cool."
-"Huh, I'm straight, but the lead singer is umm...good looking AND funny."
-"Wow, this song is awesome!"
-"Yeah!! You guys rock!"
-"Play another one!!"
-"We love you, you awesome Scottish people!"
-"No, don't go!!!"

The crowd was a bit subdued at first, but after the first couple songs, everyone realized these guys were for real, in fact, why were they even here in this little club? I suppose everyone has to start somewhere.

The lead singer has a spectacular voice, their songs are very well written, and they're a lot of fun to listen to. I'm buying their album right after writing this review (the sample clips sounded just as good as their live performance), and you should buy it too. Yes, they're that good.

Now go look up Mute Math :)

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Bunch.......2007-04-03

More powerful vocals than Interpol, more quality music than much of the post punk 80s inspired alternatives, and better songs than the Strokes period, this album rocks with a post punk attitude of sensitive aggressions.

Stark landscapes are etched with much uptempo energy. While they're from Scotland they lend themselves more to that LA/NY post apocalyptic edgy dark inclinations of The National and such.

Love this album. Lacks the perkiness of Brit-pop thank you and hasn't any weak cuts.

5 out of 5 stars great!.......2007-06-10

Great album! Tech is a great emcee, and still stands out from others in the mainstream nowadays. A solid album. Look for other great hip-hop albums like Labor Days(Aesop Rock), Mmm..Food(MF Doom), Kancer(Klown Korpse), or get Tech's Anghellic, which is probably his best.

5 out of 5 stars So ill.......2007-06-09

6. It's What You Thinkin' - Pretty good song, I had to grow on it a lil!! 4/5

7. Night and Day - Good song but the chorus is a lil weak!! 4/5

80/85 5 Stars

Overall this CD is amazing!! I also recomend ALL his music but mostly this, absolute power, and angellic!!!

* also In My Head by Tech N9ne and Whip It by Kutt Calhoun on the bonus disk are a GREAT songs!!!

3 out of 5 stars There's no questioning Tech's flow, but..........2007-02-28

Arguably the greatest to ever grace a microphone but his hooks/choruses/whatever bring the album down. I'm just not digging the girls that sing on 3/4 of his hooks. It's the same disease that plagued Canibus - weak choruses. I agree with the folk that want to hear him on a Neptune/Timbaland beat. Dre's beats are recycled garbage nowadays. Not his greatest album, iTunes Come Gangsta. But for those that can look past it, Tech N9ne's delivery/wordplay is as good as its ever been. Werd to Big Bird. 3 1/4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Tech N9ne keeps making classic/great albums!.......2007-02-26

This is a classic to me, Tech havent released a album in 4 years.. and than he drops this, the expectations were high within his fans and just hiphop fans in general.. he always makes that musik that stands out.. it dont sound like no other musik in the world.. Tech N9ne - Everready is 100% the best album of 2006...!! if you havent bought this already.. you should..

Album Description

Joining the ranks of People Under The Stairs, Colossus, J Boogie's Dubtronic Science, DJ Mark Farina's "Mushroom Jazz", and more, Om's roster of forward thinking hip-hop continues to grow. Myone, Myth, and Symbolyc (S1) are Strange Fruit Project; three emcees who continue to set trends as not your typical southern hip-hop group. Each member sings, raps, and is influenced by the constant journey of everyday life. Through innovative production and creative lyrics, their music separates them from many independent artists.

5 out of 5 stars The Healing of Hip Hop- A album to relax too.......2007-07-06

This is a excellent effort from southern rappers in a world of snap, crunk, and pimp music! A southern artist myself and into the more thoughtful hip hop, i knew i would love this CD. It reminds me of a common/LB LP. The beats are wonderfully soulful, and so are the lyrics (wow). If you are a true hip hop fan buy this album, relax, and bump it!

5 out of 5 stars Talented and Refreshing.......2007-04-20

This is a very talented group of young MC's. The music is mellow and it has an all around "Good Feeling" to it. This album can be enjoyed by all.

5 out of 5 stars IntelliHop!.......2007-04-14

Really made their mark with this installment "The Healing". Lyrics courageous enough to really speak to our condition with cleaver tracks, stimulating instrumentation and flow sychronized rhymes. They trully demonstrate they understand the importance of timing when delivering the verse. Outstanding production and collabo's including Badu who is always a welcome addition to any conscious track as well as, underground's trio Little Brother who have definately shown their devotion to the underground. All the tracks on this joint have a message you should be able to relate to.

It is a collector's item for those who focus on this love life music. This one if for the PEOPLE.

GO GET IT!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Dirty South? {4 Stars}.......2007-03-14

If Little Brother were still interesting, not full of themselves, or taking themselves so seriously, they'd sound like Strange Fruit Project. I know I'll get a lot of unhelpfuls for that statement, but I think S1, Myth, and Myone have similar rhyme styles to LB, but with more speed and fluidity and less dependence on metaphors and similies. You can witness the similarities and the differences on "Rise" which features Little Brother. Not only do they spit like no other rapper I've ever heard out of Texas, but the production is on point as well. S1 raps, but he also (excellently) produces 5 of the 14 tracks with 9th Wonder (1), the underrated Illmind (3), Nicolay (1), M-Phazes (1), the constantly overlooked Jake One (1), The Foundation, and Vitamin D holding down the rest of the production. I have to say that the beats are definitely what you'd expect from that lineup.

As far as flaws go, there really aren't many. Maybe one or two tracks are what I would label as skip material (Liberation & Pinball). They just didn't grab the ears of this particular listener, but if you dig that smooth stuff, then you should be able to play this one from start to finish.

The Healing is easily one of the top 15 hip hop releases of 2006. S1, Myth, and Myone are some of the dopest rappers I've ever heard to come out of the lone star state. To be honest, I never knew Texas had it in 'em. I recommend adding this one to your library.

Standout Tracks: The Plague, Soul Clap, You (The Only Ones) (My Favorite), A Change feat. The Procussins [Bonus Track], Get Live feat. Erykah Badu, Under Pressure, Makin' My Way, and Special feat. Thesis

4 out of 5 stars Good easy listening, slightly experimental.......2007-02-17

This hip hop has a positive religious vibe with the likes of Erykah and soulsters like Darien Brockington and Thesis. I would class it as neo-soul/underground hip hop. Feels as though it has a touch of kindred the family soulness to it which is always good. The beats vary from song to song which gives some variety, there's some new experimentalness there but I always find I can hear new styles in more hardcore and underground hip hop. Overall some wicked collabo's and a bit of heart tingling stuff but nothing to give it the label of being a classic (even though the group are relatively unknown).
