Although it squarely falls in the "jukebox musical" category, Jersey Boys doesn¹t try to integrate its songs in an artificial plotline. The show tells the story of the early-1960s group the Four Seasons, and the musical numbers tend to be introduced in context, as when songwriter Bob Gaudio comes up with a tune, or the quartet performs a show. This allows Jersey Boys to flow better than some of ill-fated peers, and the actors can shine without having to bend backward to accommodate an inane book. The show's most (only) daring move is to start with a hip-hop-tinged French-language version of "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)," an actual hit in France in 2000. After that it's all VH1-biopic territory, but it's done with so much flair, taste and energy that the ride's a fun one. The Four Seasons had enough hits ("Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," etc.) to easily fill an evening at the theater, so it's left to the cast to do right by them. And it does, particularly John Lloyd Young as the band¹s star lead, Frankie Valli. Young hits all the falsetto notes and brings real freshness to the part. His "Can¹t Take My Eyes Off You," a second-act peak, is signed, sealed and delivered with a star's acumen. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Recounting the rich history and reliving the timeless sounds of the phenomenal Frankie Vallie & The 4 Seasons, the new Broadway musical Jersey Boys answers the musical-and philosophical question, "How did four would-be wise guys from Newark, NJ, become one of the greatest chart-topping successes in pop music history?" Jersey Boys celebrates legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi who, as the 4 seasons, wrote their own songs, invented their own identity, and sold 175 million records worldwide-all before they were 30.

5 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys.......2007-07-30

This is one of the best CDs I have ever purchased. The cast of Jersey Boys gave an outstanding performance. They were just as good as the original Four Seasons. I relive many happy memories when I listen to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys relived.......2007-07-28

This is a great way to re-live the musical. And even if you haven't seen it, it's a great way to be introduced to the songs of Franki Valli and the Four Seasons. Wow! It's amazing all of the songs you recognize that have been re-done over the years. But the originals are always the best. Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys-original broadway cast recording.......2007-07-26

Fabulous! I loved that they included much of the dialog from the show and the music was impeccable.

3 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys (2005 Original Broadway Cast).......2007-07-19

Singers doesn't try to make the same sound the same original. The music sounds like the voices don't care about what they are doing. I was kinda disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Jersey Boys.......2007-07-08

Purchased CD prior to seeing the show when visiting USA in '06. A fun lively show - the CD now captivates those fond memories of not only the foot tapping music & show but also our special time in New York.

"America's First Tribal Love-Rock Musical," went the advertising, and nobody could argue with that. Hair opened on Broadway in 1968 and immediately became a smash, although no one could quite discern what it was about. Something like, "War is bad, drugs are good, racism bites the big one, and nudity is nice." Although all these sentiments are expressed on this album which, like the show, has not dated well, the quality of the music makes it forgiveable. The songs weren't really rock, but they accomplished what all good pop songs set out to do; stick in the craw. In fact, several of its tracks later became hits for pop acts, including "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" (The Fifth Dimension), "Hair" (The Cowsills), and "Good Morning Starshine" (Oliver). --Dawn Eden

5 out of 5 stars deluxe edition may not be that great.......2007-07-28

as much as i love the songs from the album and movie, the interview was short and dissapointing and the extra songs were not that enjoyable for me. that said, it kept me awake on a long rode trip, and the original songs are just as wonderful as i had hoped.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack.......2007-07-03

While I will admit that I don't think that Hair will stand up as long as the Soundtrack to 'Rent' will, I do think that this is an amazing and brilliant collections of songs of a specific time that has little if no meaning for somebody like me who was born in the 1970s.

5 out of 5 stars Hair the musical - orignal cast.......2007-06-27

Ah those were the days, marching on Washington, geting gassed, and gettig really fed up with it all And Hair recalls those time perfectly. The music and the philosophy fit perfectly. The cast is talented, the music is edgy and the lisening experience is not only very enjoyable but thought provking in light of today's unpopular war. Listen and love and learn. Peace

2 out of 5 stars Volume pathetically low.......2007-06-19

I had to rip the tracks to my HDD, then raise the volume and burn it back to a CDR. Poor quality for a commercial CD!

4 out of 5 stars nostalgia.......2007-04-15

This is a fun CD of the original broadway production of HAIR. The only thing I didn't like were the extra songs they've included. Oddly enough, I felt that they distracted from the original coherence of the piece. But, anyway, it is a very enjoyable CD

The irony of Are You Gonna Go My Way is that, by the release of his third album, Lenny Kravitz had finally started internalizing the influences of his musical heroes--Curtis Mayfield, Prince, John Lennon, and Sly Stone--who had been so nakedly copped on Let Love Rule and Mama Said. So what becomes the album's big hit? The title track, a Jimi Hendrix rip-off if there ever was one. Kravitz backslides elsewhere, too: "Is There Any Love in Your Heart" is plainly drawn from Led Zeppelin and "Eleutheria" from Bob Marley, while "Believe" takes a more inventive approach--its chorus is in the style of the Beatles, while the verses and guitar solo again recall Led Zep. What's especially damning about the album though, is that the more Kravitz strikes out on his own, the more lackluster his songs become, evidenced by the dippy come-on "Black Girl" and the weak psychedelia of "My Love." --Daniel Durchholz

This is one of the most well-rounded, well-done albums in history. I still listen to this album and it has not lost anything. Let me know when you're stranded on an island and I'll send this CD to you in a bottle....and again, I'm not even a Kravitz fan....don't listen to the main reviewer.

5 out of 5 stars 5-STAR ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-01-21

GREAT ALBUM FROM START TILL
FINISH I HAVE NOTHING BAD TO
SAY ALL THE SONGS ARE GREAT.
I REALLY DIDNT PAY LENNY ATTENTION
UNTIL ONE OF MY HAD HIS CD IN
THEIR CD BOOKLET AND SAID LET ME BORROW THAT
CD AND SEE IF I LIKE IT OR NOT AND IT TURNED
OUT THAT I DID SO BROUGHT ALL HIS OTHER MATERIAL
WHICH IS EQUALLY ENJOYABLE AND EVERY SINCE I'VE BEENING
JAMMING TO HIS ALBUM.

4 out of 5 stars Weird looks at Lenny.......2004-10-31

It's hard to follow lenny album to album only to see people mentioning his abundant influences in a bad way. Lenny sounds like zeppelin, lenny sounds like lennon, lenny sounds like mayfield. There are so many bands and artists out there who do the same, in my opinion with less personal flare, and enthusiasm, but which are welcomed or even praised for it. Lenny is in a way like the kid in highschool who always gets frowned on for doing something even though he did the same thing that another kid was or will be welcomed for doing.

Poor lenny, it makes me feel bad for him. Because he really is a talented artist, as it can be seen in "let love rule" and "mama said", and even here, and it makes me wonder where he could have gone if he had more positive incentive, which i feel he justly deserved from his environment, for doing what seems to enjoy doing most, which is making more good music of the kind he likes to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars One of his better cds.......2003-12-28

In order to like Lenny Kravitz you have to have a wide range of musical tastes because Lenny is all over the map on this one. Heres the tracks:
AYGGMW- title track always reminded me of Hendrix when i first heard it. this was a huge hit and it deserved to be. this song proves that Lenny Kravitz is one of the best drummers in rock.
BELIEVE- starts off with kind of a Zeppelin keyboard.has a great melody great harmonies and excellent buildup ending
COME ON AND LOVE ME- more great drumming from Lenny but not really a great song
HEAVEN HELP- nice piano work from Hirsch, Lenny does his Michael Jackson impression. nice+ mellow
JUST BE A WOMAN- another Plastic Ono Band ripoff with exact Lennon drum beat and sound
IS THERE ANY LOVE IN YOUR HEART-maybe the best song on here , a total rocker with great falsetto singing from Lenny
BLACK GIRL-another favorite with some weird production effects that probably sound great when stoned
MY LOVE- a bare bones stoner song , very 70s
SUGAR-a poor ripoff of It aint over til its over
SISTER- starts off with some noise from an amp and continues til the guitar comes in , pretty cool song trying to sound alittle more important than it really is
ELEUTHERIA- boring reggae song that sounds like every other reggae song ive heard

5 out of 5 stars This album rocks........2003-09-17

After reading an editorial review on Lenny's album Are You Gonna Go My Way, me being a die-hard Lenny Kravitz fan, I had to comment against the cruel words.

First of all, how many artists out there can say that they have not had any other musical influences while writing their own music? If you listen closely to most popular music of today, it pretty much all sounds alike...that is probably why it is called "Popular Music". Although this album does have songs that have similarities to other artists, the majority of the songs were written, arranged and even produced by Lenny Kravitz! Like an editor said in his review "Believe takes a more inventive approach--its chorus is in the style of the Beatles..." yes, some of the songs do emulate the artists that inspire him but the key words here are "in the STYLE of the Beatles". But don't take away Lenny's credibility and ability to write his own songs by writing such harsh opinions. But now I would like to express my views on not only this album but also on Lenny as an artist.

Can you find me an artist that does not have music that reflects their influences? It is highly unlikely. Music is a source of inspiration, and influence. Musicians always have an influence and it will always be seen and heard through their craft. If anything, the fact that after hearing Lenny's album, you were reminded of artists such as the Beatles or Led Zepplin and Bob Marley, is a positive thing. To be in the same caliber of those artists is truly a compliment. Lenny can sound like other artists...but no one can sound like Lenny.

Although I have been a Lenny fan since long before the Are you Gonna Go My Way album, I must admit, that this album was probably the one that really made me open my eyes and ears to Lenny as an artist. His songs may sound familiar, but are definitely done in LENNY'S own way. He takes a sound, and makes it better. He perfects it. He takes a familiarity and gives it his own Lenny flare. He gives critics something to talk about.

I admire Lenny for being compared to other artists, but at the same time making his own music, writing his own lyrics, and playing many instruments unlike many of the artists today, which of course so many critics completely fail to mention. I will always love Lenny's music, his albums and will always "go his way"!

The Are You Gonna Go My Way album rocks.

4 out of 5 stars Why all the negative reviews? .......2005-09-25

This is their most politically coherent album. If you're old enough, you'll remember that "3 Way" came out during Reagan's second term. The administration was supporting death squad governments in El Salvador and Guatemala, while covertly funding terrorist "Contras" in Nicaragua. This record is a direct response to those policies. The lyrics are EXCELLENT, still poetic and personal but very clear in their anti-war stance.

The album is well recorded. I don't know what "slick" means in this context; they wanted it to sound the way it sounds. The production serves the songs. And about the covers ... "Double Nickels" had a terrible Steely Dan cover, so why complain about Creedence and Blue Oyster Cult?

They were maturing and evolving on this one. Who knows where they might have gone next.

3 out of 5 stars The Minutemens worst album still has it's charms.......2005-07-16

Despite the 5 covers, slower tempos and for the Minutemen much more conventional and longer songs, 3-Way Tie For Last is a good album. Unfortunately it's the Minutemen's last official album being released just before D. Boon's untimely death and isn't a very good swansong. One wonders what direction this odd and intelligent band would have taken had D. lived. Because this album doen'st really point in any one direction. It's somewhat scattershot and unfocused with moments of brilliance interspersed with moments of boredom and self-indulgence. I wouldn't start here if you are new to the Minutemen. Rather you should start at the magnificent What Makes a Man Start Fires? or their masterpiece Double Nickels On The Dime which is a five star album if ever I've heard one.

3 out of 5 stars Buy every other Minutemen album first.......2004-03-29

I've been a huge Minutemen fan for a long time and regret not having seen them live before their sudden and tragic demise nearly twenty years ago. In my opinion, "Three Way..." is the band's weakest effort, by far. What really spoils this record for me is it's slick production. Previous Minutemen records feature bare-bones production techniques that faithfully capture the raw intensity of their live shows. This record (or CD, if you prefer) is just too glossy sounding for my tastes and seriously dulls the band's edge. Still, every Minutemen record is worth a listen.

But.....

If you are new to The Minutemen, first pick up their classic double LP (or extra-length CD, but with fewer songs) "Double Nickles On The Dime". Then, get "Post-Mersh Vol. 1" which contains their first two LP's on one CD. While you're at it, check out "Ballot Result", a double LP consisting of live recordings chosen by the band's fans. Originally, D., Mike, and George were going to perform these songs live once the results were in. But due to D. Boon's untimely death, the songs were compiled from live shows, rehearsal tapes, and radio broadcasts. Sound quality can be very spotty in places, but don't let that prevent you from enjoying this nice tribute to D. and his bandmates. Also, listen to how much better the live versions compare to the same songs on "Three Way..." No contest!

1 out of 5 stars god awful.......2004-02-07

If you turned on to the Minutemen after listening to Buzz or Howl... or What Makes a Man Start Fires, the dull, pseudo Creedence on display here will make you wonder how they could go so far wrong in just a few short years. If you're new to the Minutemen, don't waste your ears on this total turkey. Start with Buzz or Howl--amazing record.

4 out of 5 stars A little mersh, but still awesome.......2003-08-08

A friend of mine died recently. He always hated this record. His family sold all his records and donated the money to charities. I ended up with this one. This is essentially a Vietnam war protest record, made twenty years after the fact. Most of the songs are about war and the ramifications of it on society. "The Price of Paradise" is a slow rocking song about dying young. "Courage" is an appropriate song for today's conservative political economy. And "No One" is great funk rock. There's also many of a cover (Meat Puppets, CCR, Blue Oyester Cult, Ect.). This is probably the last Minutemen record you want to get, so you follow their natural progression. It's really good, and a nice record to think to.

4 out of 5 stars RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "AMEN TO THE ALLMAN BROTHERS LIVE PERFORMANCE!".......2007-02-03

This is a good, solid rounded, live performance by the Allman Brothers. They perform a wide variety of music from their vast repertoire, even including some jazz like pieces, interspersed, with their normal southern rock blues. (I would have enjoyed more blues). This is a double CD, but one "heads up" to experienced Allman fans, a lot of these songs, are big pieces of prior Allman releases, so check your personal catalog, before purchasing, if your hopes are new songs.

4 out of 5 stars Double CD of the 2003 Beacon Theatre shows. Get the DVD too........2006-10-25

The double-CD One Way out is a great example of the latter day Allman Brothers Band, playing live improvisational blues/rock/jazz "guitar music" at its brilliant best, accompanied by a trademark freight-train rhythm section and woven with the glorious tone of a Hammond B3.

There is a DVD of these 2003 Beacon Theatre shows and some reviewers have already pointed out that there are some differences in track listings/performances between the DVD and this CD.

The highlight on this CD for me, is a stellar version of Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, not appearing on the DVD. I've never been all that keen on interpretations of that song by The Yardbirds or Johnny Winter. But this version is such a wonderful interpretation; like Cream meets the Band of Gypsies in the delta.

I read somewhere that Warren Haynes is listed in the top 20 guitarists in the world today. I'd have him in the top 10. A super player (and decent singer) and a throw-back to the great players of the 60's & 70's. Just born too late. And drummer Butch Truck's nephew, Derek, is no slouch on guitar either! His slide work in particular is masterful. Derek is currently touring with Eric Clapton and one would assume performing the slide-work on Layla, which was originally performed by the great Duane Allman.

I like the way the CD liner notes indicate that Derek's guitar is in the left channel and Warren's is in the right channel. I like to know stuff like that. Similarly, Jaimoe's drums are in the left channel and Butch's in the right.

There are a couple of negatives from time to time. You'll need to be forgiving of Gregg's voice, which is not what it once was. Also, the opening version of Statesboro Blues, is kind of soggy and disappointing compared to the famous Live at Fillmore East version; but listen to them stretch out on the lengthy Instrumental Illness and you'll be stunned by the musical talent in this band.

I highly recommend that you buy this CD as well as the DVD of the same Beacon Theatre shows.

5 out of 5 stars better than the original band?.......2006-07-07

Well, no. The current Allman Brothers lineup can't be said to outdo the original band. But the performances and the new material recorded here by the current ABB are so fantastic that it seriously raises the question. I do think today's Allmans are as good as Duane's band was, and this disk is to my ears the best demonstration of that fact.

After Duane Allman died in '71, and Berry Oakley in '72, the original band understandably lost more than a bit of the magic that it had in it by the time of the Fillmore East album. And it was exactly at that time in rock history that the old days of the great bands living gig to gig had finally ended: just after the deaths of Duane and Berry, the ABB entered into the age of multi-million dollar stadium concert tours (yes, Elvis and the Beatles had been there before, but it wasn't until the early 70s that the entertainment industry figured out how to make that into the norm). So Gregg alienated himself from the rest of the group, going on a star trip and maintaining an absolutely staggering intake of drugs and alcohol (why is it that Keith Richards gets all the credit for that?), the band's formerly VERY high standards collapsed, and the Brothers broke up by '76. They attempted to reform the band for a few years at around the start of the 80s, but the effort was basically a failure. Then in '89 they tried it again, and musically speaking things worked reasonably well through the 90s (though they probably didn't attain even to half of what the Fillmore East band had been capable of). As the 90s drew to a close, though, a great deal of animosity had developed between Dickey Betts and the other band members. Anyone who saw their shows from those days will remember it: they didn't smile on stage, they seemed stiff and uncomfortable playing with each other, Betts seemed a mean, angry taskmaster. And so, in a real heartbreaker for Allmans fans, they fired Dickey Betts (not exactly, but de facto that's what happened) in '00. Derek Trucks took his place, rounding out the band's current roster. With Betts gone the Brothers had a workable personal environment again, Gregg had sobered up by that time, and as a result of all this the music started to get steadily better and better, to the point that by around '03, the old band's magic began to shine again. They released Hittin' the Note, the studio album that provides the new material for this live show, in March of that year, and recorded this show during the Beacon run in March of '04.

I still think that the original band, at its very, very best, could still just barely outdo the current Allman Brothers. When a thing is being created for the first time there can be a spark of magic in it that can't be duplicated later, after it's become something to maintain; the work becomes less creative, more derivative. But we're talking about a narrow margin. If Rockin' Horse isn't quite the tune that Blue Sky was, if Instrumental Illness isn't quite the jam that Mountain Jam was back at the Fillmore, then they only just miss that mark. One Way Out is absolutely magnificent, and I will tell you without apology that no other rock band has ever come within shouting distance of it in this kind of music.

5 out of 5 stars transcending brothers.......2006-07-04

Live at Fillmore was recorded before I was born. I've listened to it quite a few times during my Berklee days. I will be the first to admit it's a landmark album, and one that belongs on any music lover's shelf.
But I beg you, get this one as well.
After my first listen i said 'Dicky who?' For the newbie, I am referring to the ousted original member Dicky Betts. Derek Trucks proves to be more than a replacement. I could write 1,000 words on this talent alone. The perfect foil to the hardest working man (no, not James Brown) in music today, Warren Haynes. Do I miss Dicky's songs? of course I do. I so wanted desperately to hear Seven Turns and Ramblin' Man here, but alas I must take the bad with the good. So many gems here, Come and Go Blues, Worried down with the blues, and Desdemona stand out. But honestly I can't find a weak one here. This is Allmans at their prime: post-alcoholism Gregg and post-burnout Dicky. This is one of the few occasions where a band gets better with every year, like a fine wine. Get it and bask in some of the glory that the Beacon in NYC sees every March.

4 out of 5 stars Another Live Allman Brothers Album.......2006-06-10

"One Way Out" is one of many live albums released by the Allman Brothers over the past thirty five years or so and it proves that the band still has what it takes to make a solid live recording. This double disk set captures the band live in a familiar setting- New York's Beacon Theater, a locale where the Allman Brothers have played countless times.

The music contained on this live set is similar to what you hear when you see the Allman Brothers perform in person. Similar, because it includes only a few well-known, classic tunes mixed together with many songs that will not likely be recognized by most listeners. I have seen the Allman Brothers in concert more times than any other band and their song list follows the same formula every time. They always play at least a few popular songs, but they never attempt to play all or even most of their popular tunes at any one show. They keep the audience anticipating which popular songs will be played and they fill the rest of the show with songs that are good, but less well- known. The same formula is followed on One Way Out. It offers classics like Statesboro Blues, Midnight Rider, Trouble no More, Dreams, and Whipping Post, combined together with thirteen other songs that many listeners will not recognize.

The production on this album is solid and the music is crisp and clean. You cannot hear much noise from the audience at all except between tunes and even then, the contributions from the audience are minimal. There isn't much verbal input from Gregg Allman and Company either. Except for the occasional "How are you doin'?" or "Thank You", Allman doesn't say much at all, preferring instead to let the music speak for itself.

One Way Out offers a lengthy amount of music. Eighteen tracks may not seem like a number so great that it would warrant two disks. But this is the Allman Brothers, and if you have seen them live then you know that eighteen songs for them is like thirty- six for most other artists in terms of total time. Adding everything together, there is almost 149 minutes of music in this set- nearly 2.5 hours or roughly 8.25 minutes per song. Looking at the lengths of each track, Midnight Rider is the shortest, clocking in at 3:16 and Instrumental Illness is the longest, at 16:42. Five of the songs are more than ten minutes in length. These longer songs offer many minutes of instrumentals and this may or may not be to everyone's liking.

Is there anything negative to say about One Way Out? I can only think of one small criticism: The similar sound between many of the tunes. The Allman Brothers like to keep the music simple most of the time, with only guitars, bass, keyboard, and drums supplying the sound. There are a couple of songs on this set with congas and various percussion instruments but there is no brass, no harmonica, or anything else. This is why several of the songs, like Come and Go Blues, Woman Across the River, and Rockin' Horse are difficult to tell apart. Even someone like myself, who has seen the Allman Brothers in concert many times, would have difficulty naming the tune if a small segment (say, 20 seconds or so) was played from any of these similar- sounding songs.

Overall, "One Way Out" is still a solid live offering from the Allman Brothers. It offers some classic Allman Brothers tunes combined with some lesser known material for a listening experience that is very much what one would expect who has seen the band perform live. Some songs sound very similar to each other but the slick production and the bluesy rock and roll make One Way Out an enjoyable live set.

It was often hard to pin the Meat Puppets down: just when you thought they were hard-core thrash (1981's Meat Puppets), or an electrifying blend of desert country, hillbilly, and psychedelia (1985's seminal Up on the Sun), the Kirkwood brothers would come out with something like 1986's six-track Out My Way. Much more classic rock and country than their previous offerings, it still gave their fans a typically warped perspective--particularly on the sing-along title track and a completely maniacal version of Little Richard's "Good Golly Miss Molly." If guitarist Curt was by now wanting to move a little more towards accessibility, it sure didn't show. The seven bonus tracks here (recorded around the same time) include the self-descriptive Orb-like "Backwards Drums" and a Mekons-esque rambling version of George Jones's "Burn the Honky Tonky Down." By this point, the Phoenix trio were cruising on easy. --Everett True

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Six -song classic EP now expanded!!!.......2007-08-01

This album is a prime example of the Meat Puppets' sun-baked, cow-punk aesthetic. The cover art serves as an accurate representation of the music contained within, a skewed southwestern desert vision. Off-kilter slices of country, punk, and rock converge into a sound which defies categorization.

Of all the Rykodisc reissues of the SST albums, Out My Way is the one that benefits the most from the bonus material. The track list is expanded from the original six songs to thirteen. Highlights from the album include the title track, along with the bizarre, hallucinatory "Other Kinds of Love" which contains sonic elements reminiscent of the 13th Floor Elevators, only with the jug replaced by some sound from an unidentifiable instrument. "Not Swimming Ground" is a Puppets' classic and "Mountain Line" is an up-tempo, idiosyncratic country rocker that contains all the nervous energy of early Talking Heads.

As far as the bonus material is concerned "Everything is Green" features Curt Kirkwood laying down some killer riffs over a drum loop. I imagine him in a room all by himself just ripping it. This is a convincing display of musical dexterity from one of the most underrated guitarists in rock history. Also, "Backwards Drum" takes an unexpected turn into electronic experimentalism, which the reviewer in the liner notes correctly compares to Aphex Twin. The cover of George Jones' "Burn the Honky Tonk Down" has to be heard to be believed because it is too hysterical to describe in words.

Out My Way is a complete success. It acts as a bridge between Up On the Sun and Mirage, combining the finer points of both, while remaining a unique entity unto itself. It ranks right up there with the Meat Puppets' best work. I recently stumbled across an original vinyl copy and have been spinning it nonstop. A highly enjoyable album!

5 out of 5 stars Borderline Favorite.......2006-12-01

I must say that this EP comes very close to being my favorite work by the Meat Puppets (and I really like the cover art!). The consistency of "Out My Way," "Other Kinds of Love," "Not Swimming Ground," and "Mountain Line" is just wonderful. Creative guitar work (of course), awesome lyrics...excellent in every regard. I'm also fond of the added songs "On the Move," "Burn the Honky Tonk Down," "Backwards Drums," and "Everything is Green" (the latter two being musicals). However, even with the addition of these great songs, it still doesn't *feel* like an album, which is perhaps the only reason I wouldn't rank it above other Meat Puppet's works such as "II," "Up On the Sun," or "Monsters." Still, an awesome work by the Pups, and one that I have likely listened to more than anything else by this wonderful band. Definitely a must-own.

4 out of 5 stars Oh, so close to 5 stars (4.5 stars).......2005-05-28

The Meat Puppets released Out My Way in 1986 as a six-song EP stopgap release between the albums Up On The Sun and Mirage. As on their previous albums, they continued to expand their horizons by adding funk and more traditional classic rock to their cowpunk roots. Cris Kirkwood's bass lines were also becoming very creative at this point which not only complemented his brother Curt's guitar work but also made them sound even more distinctive than they already were.

Out My Way starts off with "She's Hot" and the title track which are both catchy and very funky proving the band could pretty much pull off any genre they try. "Other Kinds Of Love" is another great track with its mood swings sounding reminiscent of the material on Up On The Sun. "Not Swimming Ground" is an awesome song and arguably the best example of the musical interplay between the Kirkwood brothers. "Mountain Line" is a return to their cowpunk roots, possessing the fire that comprised their previous work but not sounding as rough. And speaking of rough, we get the loose and heavy version of "Good Golly Miss Holly" which is actually the weakest track of the original six that comprised the album. As with all of their earlier albums, several tracks have been added to the remastered version. However, the extra songs included here actually add to the release. "Burn The Honky Tonk Down" and "Boyhood Home" continue the band's country leanings while "Background Drums" shows the experimentation that would comprise their next album Mirage. "On The Move" is also another strong track. However, the best of the new tracks, and one of the best on the album period, is the 8 1/2-minute instrumental "Everything Is Green" which shows that the Meat Puppets can also be an awesome jam band if they so choose. Also included is another rough cover tune, this time it's "I Just Want To Make Love To You." The truth is, it's the rough cover versions of this and "Good Golly Miss Molly" which prevent this from being one of their classic albums. Still, it's a great release and definitely worth picking up.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the Pups' best stuff, or anyone's, for that matter.......2000-10-12

The stuff added onto the reissue is very cool -- makes you want to fire up your own jam session -- but the original six tracks still constitute a terrific EP in their own right. Basically, this EP bridges the subtlety of "Up On The Sun" and the punch of "Huevos" (overlooking "Mirage", where despite some fine tracks the muse felt a little forced). And its best tracks have a certain "magical" quality that is impossible to describe, but instantly recognizable. Agree w/ previous reviewer re "Out My Way" -- simply an amazing, hypnotic spin on so-called "classic rock". "Down in its cave/My heart lays/Its own sun/Lights the day". Incredible stuff. Also superb is "Not Swimming Ground", with a wondrous solo and joyous bass, seriously threatening to get you a speeding ticket. These two alone are among the very best stuff by the band, probably among the most transcendent hundred-odd rock songs I know of (from "Rubber Soul" up through the present -- I admit I kind of lost track of most stuff after "Too High To Die" or so. Maybe because I turned 30 around then or something). "Other Kinds of Love" is the other standout, a psychedelic gem, and the rest range from solid to fun, with nary a dog in the bunch.

5 out of 5 stars the Great Underrated Meat Puppets Album.......1999-12-09

"Out My Way" was already pretty good; unfortunately it ended abruptly after six songs, leaving this listener with some blank cassette time to fill. Now, the band has stretched a good EP into one of The Great Rock Efforts. Yeah, it's polished, but it's also utterly psychedelic without a single wasted note. I love jamming, but they don't even need to jam to astrally transport you, here. On "Other Kinds of Love" the band sounds as though they require Eastern melodies simply to accomodate their expanded definition of love. "Not Swimming Ground" and "Mountain Line" are perfect hybrids of bluegrass and rock; at the end of the former, one can faintly make out the guitarist muttering, "I played my head on that one," meaning it. One wonders how they left "On the Move" off the original album, since it is so catchy you'll swear you must have already purchased a product that it was advertising. On "Everything is Green," the band does stretch it out at long last, and it might make you wonder why the Grateful Dead needed so many members. "Out My Way" simply takes rock to another level and, shrugging, drops it there, announcing, "This is what the music can be; now what do we do, next?" OK?

Few recording producers and performers take the time and care to so intelligently exhibit a sampling of the rich and colorful American hymn repertoire. This thoughtful and varied program of hymns, Shaker songs, anthems, and spirituals shows what good things can happen when a top-rank choir and director and an accommodating record company join in such a project. The 20 selections come from a variety of sources, including The Southern Harmony (published in 1834) and The Sacred Harp (published in 1844). The Shaker tunes are from the vast collections at New Lebanon and Pleasant Hill, New York, and Sabbathday Lake, Maine. Four of the six spirituals and several of the hymns are arrangements by Alice Parker; others are arranged by James Mulholland. Among the hymns and spirituals are two American choral classics: Randall Thompson's famous and oft-performed "Alleluia" and Daniel Gawthrop's "Sing Me to Heaven." --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars The best choir out there.......2004-03-02

The Kansas City Chorale is a SUPERIOR vocal group. I am impressed by its large and wholesome sound that is produced by such a small group. The Alleluia CD is beautiful and also very diverse. "Sing me to Heaven" is gorgeous. The harmonies are beautiful on the page, but are even more beautiful when sung by this ensemble. "Alleluia" is also wonderful, and I was impressed by their interpretation of the many shaker songs and spirituals. This cd is a MUST HAVE for any choral singer or enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.......2003-03-24

My choir sang "Alleluia", and used this recording to learn the dynamics. A brilliant performance of that piece. The others are, too, excellent. Good balance, dynamic, and overall sound. But the "Alleluia" really stood out for me.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent CD.......2002-01-23

My pastor bought me this CD and I wasn't sure I'd really like it. Chorale music? You must be joking. But I popped it into my CD player at home and was immediately astonished at what I heard. The Kansas City Chorale have done an outstanding job of singing hymns of various types, most without musical accompaniment. Track 7 ("Encouragement") is my absolute favorite song on this CD. It is so beautiful to hear, especially when I crank it on my big stereo or over my headphones.

Bottom line: if you like chorale music, religious music, or even classical music, you will really enjoy this CD. The quality of the recording is very good.

5 out of 5 stars A moving survey of American hymns.......2002-01-02

This is an excellent, deeply musical performance of a wide variety of hymns, Shaker tunes, and spirituals. The choices provide variety and a thumbnail sketch of a time in America when hymn-singing was a part of every week's activities. I agree with another reviewer that "Precious Lord" is a highlight. Also noteworthy is "Give Me Jesus" at the end. Both the singing and acoustics of the recording are top notch. I have already played this CD many times since receiving it two days ago. I'm ordering copies for friends! Among my many choral CDs, this one stands out as a favorite.

5 out of 5 stars a listener from North Kansas CIty.......2001-06-27

What a excellent CD! I got this for Christmas after going to a couple of their concerts and it sounds just as good as it did live. If you like chorale music then this is the cd for you. I personally know a man that sings in this group and is very talented singer along with the rest!

Although he's described playing the role of Roger as a mere "stepping stone," Adam Pascal made it to the cover of Newsweek thanks to his part in the Rent phenomenon--and the dramatic edge he brought to his doomed character. While he's continued his work in musical theater with the blockbuster Elton John/Tim Rice show Aida, Pascal returns to his roots as a rock singer on Model Prisoner. His debut solo CD--with backing from Saturday Night Live alumni band members--comes out on Internet-based Sh-K-Boom Records, a label interested in bridging the musical theater-pop music gap for a hip young audience. In fact, Pascal's pre-Rent years were spent fronting a band called Mute; the singer's brand of raw energy makes it clear he's spent a lot of time admiring the likes of Axl Rose and Queensryche. No doubt that the rough passion of his delivery goes some way toward compensating for the repeatedly formulaic quality of his tunes (Pascal wrote 10 of the album's 12 songs)--which can range from leftover hair-metal choruses to dirty-blues-framed laments. But what always comes through is the unmistakable intensity of Pascal's voice, and its ability to shift and shade the moods being expressed. Pascal may be at a crossroads, but he's determined not to be held prisoner by the patterns his fame has cut out so far. --Thomas May

As an Adam Pascal fan, I was anxious to hear this, yet nervous that it would be less than perfect... and I was wrong - I really like this cd. The songs are "singable" - Liken A Razor and Rhyme and Reason are my favorites. For a free preview of him playing an accoustic version of it, go to (...)

5 out of 5 stars Good CD!.......2004-08-24

Very good! I only had the privilege of listening to a few songs, but I love them all! Unfortunately, when I tried to buy it at Borders, they said it wasn't available from anybody. Not even the distributor. So I couldn't get it. But anyway, after hearing Rent and Aida, I really thought of this as a refreshing alternative to my...obsession, if you will, with Broadway stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Adam Pascal: Model Prisioner.......2004-03-26

As a avid fan of RENT, I had bought the RENT OBC about 5 years ago and basically havent stopped listening to it since. RENT was the best and most orginal show B'Way had seen in decades. And upon listening to this CD I heard this golden voice of raw power and soul. It was Adam Pascal. And as he has been equally brilliant in everything he's done since(Aida, Cabaret).
So when he came out with this CD about 2 years ago, I bought it. I must say, I loved it instantly. Adam has a very distinctive voice. Filled with power, emotion and soul. His voice is ear-shattering....But in a really good way. And on this wonderful music journey he hits shades of 80's hair band rock, Heavy Metal, Pop, Country and infuses it with fresh modern rock for just a very strong CD.

5 out of 5 stars great CD.......2006-11-10

After hearing Adam in the Theater, then in the movie Rent I needed to hear him on his own. This is a great CD and I recomend it to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2006-06-27

I love Adam's unique voice and style, my favorite tracks being Beautiful Song, 10,000 Miles, No Trace, Book of Endings, and I'm With You (beautiful lullabye!). I first experienced Adam's voice in Rent, and had to buy his CD. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Reaches down to your soul.......2006-02-28

I first saw Adam Pascal in "School of Rock", and recognised him immediately as Roger from Rent, a musical I've been obsessed with for 5 years now.

And the minute I heard his voice I remembered one summer when the radio played hits from Broadway. During the "break", they played songs by Broadway's most successful artists, and sure enough, that's when I first heard Adam's voice. I heard "Mother's Child", and being Indian, was touched when he sang in Hindi.

His voice reaches out from the speakers, grabs your heart and wrenches it open and heals it at the same time. He can touch your soul with his wonderfully accurate and fresh portrayals of modern living and every human's struggle with finding their own life. The harshness in his voice is laced with tenderness and softness, but you can't ignore the edge. He doesn't pretend, he hides nothing.

After hearing "Mother's Child", I got "Model Citizen" and "Civilian", as well as the soundtrack to "Rent" and "Aida" which have all blown me away.

Buy this CD, you will love it!
