It would be easy to bridle at Midian's relentless bombast and obsession with all things Goth. Many would detest a purposefully pretentious mix of Carl Orff and Obituary that occasionally collapses into early '80s-style prog-metal. And then there's J.K. Potter's laughable artwork, wherein band members look like characters in Clive Barker's miserable Night Breed, the source of the album's name. But there's also a lot here to appreciate. Frontman Dani Filth is becoming ever more convincing in his attempts to offend; some turns of phrase in his blood-spattered romances even manage to recall Keats and Byron. Musically, they seldom fail to entertain and sometimes reach the operatic heights of Laibach and Lacrimosa. More reading and refinement by this lot may produce the first Goth masterpiece since the Sisters of Mercy's First and Last and Always. --Dominic Wills
Customer Reviews:
Lush Symphonic Black Metal.......2007-07-11
I could have sworn I reviewed this album a few years ago but could not find it here on Amazon. What prompted this was that I bought a CD from Dimmu Borgir and heard many similarities. So, here I am.
When I first got this CD, I really had no idea what to expect. I was surprised at the lush arrangements and the range of Dani Davey's voice. The guitar work is excellent and the drumming is just the right amount of blast beats and compliments the songs instead of distracting from them.
In all, I tend to like the more melodic songs the best, such as Ghost In The Fog. The symphonic intro is also killer. I was lucky to see them live here in Las Vegas at the old Huntridge Theater just before it closed. They really rocked. I think I was the oldest guy there and everyone kept looking at me like I was a narc or something. But that's alright, I had a great time. The lineup that night was from this CD, as best as I could tell. Live, they nailed all the songs that they played from the CD. Even the unfamiliar songs were great. They rocked.
For great black metal with lush orchestration and some of the wildest vocals around, you can't go wrong with these guys. Highly recommended.
I like the newer stuff better.......2007-05-11
This CD was kind of spoiled to me because I had bought it after I had bought Lovecraft and Witch Hearts, which had the better half of the songs on this CD already on it. But strictly speaking on the tracks on this CD, I think that it rightly deserves a three star rating. It wasn't as dark as I would have liked for it to have been, nor were the vocals totally tamed. Now, with more experience, Cradle of Filth has created a variety of better-sounding, better-themed albums that are much more valuable to me.
The most Heavy Gothic CD i have ever heard........2007-04-23
Love Gothic buy this album
I think these are the heaviest band around today.
Not for the faint hearted as there is barely any singing just metal riffs and shouting and screaming. Also do not buy if you are of most religions as 1 of the tracks is called satanic mantra and well nearly all of their songs have something satanic about them personally i love that but your choice.
Great Music!.......2006-11-06
The product arrived in only a few days. My son was very plased with the music.
A Gothic Masterpiece.......2006-10-28
The biggest problem many had with this album was the vocals. No doubt about it, to any normal person, the singing of one Dani Filth is irritating and annoying. It grow on you, though, and this isn't the "worst" his voice has ever been (listen to "Dusk and Her Embrace" and you'll know what I mean).
The "horrible vocals" aside, this album is an absolute gothic masterpiece. The songs are all very dark, especially from the keyboards, and have lyrics to match. There really is not a single bad song on this entire album and in fact includes some of Cradle's most popular work, including "Her Ghost in the Fog," "Cthulhu Dawn," and "Lord Abortion."
The story regards Midian, the city of sinners and the like. Each song seems to depict the sins of a seperate being or group through themes of dark romances, vampirism and monsterous creatures.
Here's how I rate each song:
1. At The Gates of Midian - The band could've done a bit better with this instrumental, but it still is fairly decent. (4/5)
2. Cthulhu Dawn - A dark gothic tale of armageddon as Midian rises and a fan favorite. (5/5)
3. Saffron's Curse - A dark romance between a man and an insane woman who inevitably kills herself as her love dreams of vengeance in her death. (5/5)
4. Death Magick for Adepts - The song seems to be solely about ritualistic rape and murder, but is really a rite of vampyrism that is as dark as they come. Doug Bradley does great narration at the end of the song. (5/5)
5. Lord Abortion - This is a song about a man who is the incarnation of sex, lust and death and describes the sad truth of how some people in this world really live. The music itself is great, especially the opening. (5/5)
6. Amor E Morte - I never really got into this song, really. It wasn't the vampyric lyrics of cannibalism, but the song itself never really appealed to me, even though it is a fairly good song. (3.5/5)
7. Creatures That Kissed In Cold Mirrors - In my opinion, one Cradle's best instrumental ever next to the two surprisingly good ones on the new Thornography album. (5/5)
8. Her Ghost In The Fog - Normally I'm not one for rating above the typical 5/5, but this is the sole exception. This is my favorite song of all time, with a deep feeling of darkness, sorrow and love all in one song. Bradley's narration is flawless as it opens a sorrowful tale of love and revenge about a witch who is raped and killed by five priests and her love who in turn burns down the chruch of the priests who stole from him that which bore him happiness. (10/5)
9. Satanic Mantra - There are no instruments in this 50 second long chant that doesn't give a feeling of Satanism at all, unlike the song's title, but still sounds as dark as anything else on this album. (4.5/5)
10. Tearing the Veil From Grace - The true unveiling of Midian is a very well done song, with smooth transitions between slow, steady melodic choruses and blasting, heavy riffs. (5/5)
11. Tortured Soul Asylum - The true side of Midian finally revealed in this epic ending to my personal favorite album of all time. (5/5)
Final Word: If you don't like Dani's vocals, get over it or listen to something else if you feel the need. But with or without his vocals, this album is an excellent and essential addition to any metal/gothic collection. If you really liked this album, I would definitely recommend Cradle's three earlier albums: "The Principle of Evil Made Flesh", "Dusk...And Her Embrace" and "Cruelty and the Beast." Keep rockin' and stay filthy!

Album Description
Although we loved Raz's first two records with ROIR, this is by far his finest record to date (as Badawi or under any other moniker). On Soldier Of Midian Raz samples his own live playing (from Flute to Bendir to Zarb) and agitates the mix with the use of subtle electronic effects. Heavy with Middle-Eastern percussion and a mesmerizing beat, it quickens the pulse and physically unnerves the listener. The pulsating rhythms are aggressive and unyielding, bordering on a hard-core drum record. Badawi's ability to capture a mood and control it, to force his will upon the listener, this is what makes Soldier Of Midian so compelling.
Customer Reviews:
BRILLIANT!!.......2006-09-27
WOW, this is one of the most brilliant Middle Eastern/Egyptian (I believe) and neo-electronic/world-fusion disks I've ever heard. Gets one moving and groving and the spiritual vibes flowing. It's a must for anyone's music collection who is into both electronic and world music. Blessed BE!

Relentless Heartstopping Electric Boogie Bedouin.......2002-11-06
Incredible piece of art Raz! Congrats. Dancers listen...if you want to dance to this make sure your doctor gives you a clean bill of health before attempting it! With the right approach to choreography this album is a Troupe's dream. The underlying percussion is relentless and the repetitions are perfect for troupe or prop work. And for clubbing this can't be beat!
Follow the Storm.......2002-07-15
I agree with the other reviewer...this disc is relentless. Raz Mesinai, formerly of Sub Dub, is a true musical genius. This album got pretty much zero promotion...such a shame because the quality and originality of 'Soldier of Midian' easily rivals Karsh Kale, Badmarsh, Talvin Singh, and yes even Bill Laswell. Not that the style is similar to those musicians, this is much more middle eastern, but quite frankly there are few artists I know to compare this stuff with. Those into this sound will find little that rivals it....as for me I like things with a little more of a dub feel. But..this certainly helps round out my collection.
Relentless.......2001-12-30
Badawi's latest release is a pounding, galloping romp through the Middle East. It's his best album since "Bedouin Sound Clash," (better if you like his middle eastern leanings better than his dub leanings) and evidence that Badawi is an artist at the top of his game. On this album, Raz samples his own live playing and subtlely warps it with electronic effects. The results are freaking amazing. 14 songs of relentless, throbbing beats, which continually impress with each repeated listening. A perfect synthesis of past, present and future, of over here and over there.

Customer Reviews:
Fresh and Lyrical.......2007-03-12
In any discussion of 20th-century music, certain names--Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Britten, etc--crowd to the front of the room. But a more thorough examination of the era reveals many more fine composers. Stefan Wolpe is among those, and his reputation has grown over the decades since his death. This CD presents music composed in the first decade of Wolpe's time in America. "The Man From Midian" is a ballet, scored for two pianos, on the subject of Moses.
Ballet scores can be problematic, restricted as they are by the need for short tableaux. In the case of some composers--Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev come to mind--scores never escape those restrictions. They're always "ballet music". Wolpe instead found an opportunity. The score plays as an integrated suite, exploring various scales and formal mechanisms. It's more innovative than a first hearing would indicate, and nicely explores the sonorities available from two pianos. Of course, if one prefers to listen to music programmatically, the story is ready-made. Some of the processional music reminds me slightly of Britten's "Burning Fiery Furnace", which came much later.
The "Sonata for Violin and Piano" doesn't really break any new ground, but it's still a well-made piece in a unique voice. It's quite vigorous and dramatic. Although Wolpe was born in Germany, the Sonata doesn't sound particularly German, or American, or any other particular nationality. Wolpe has successfully breathed in the musical air from all around. It's a nice piece.
The peformance comes from the Group for Contemporary Music--not so much a specific assemblage of performers as a sort of clearing house for first-rate musicians. The readings are excellent, and the recording--while a bit reverberant--is excellent. Thanks again to Naxos for giving these excellent readings a second life.

10 Stars not 5 .......2005-02-02
Cradle of filth at there best with this cd! Couldnt have done it better! Especially the track Saffrons Curse! My god what a track that is. Go buy it now in the the name of Midian.
not the best.......2002-05-29
I love CoF, but this one dissapointed me. It seemed a little too goth, and not metal enough. Don't get me wrong, it is still a good album, just doesn't sound like old Cradle. Also, the track listing on this page IS right, and the other reviewer is wrong in the bonus track's name. If you are a huge Cradle fan, I'd get this cd, but if you are just a mediocre fan, go for the original release of Midian and save yourself some cash.
Go buy.......2002-03-07
This is a great (and I mean that) album. It's a lot diffrent from "The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh" or "Vempire" but still this is surprisingly good though I thought nothing could be better the those two. But their new style is very cool almost better then their old. This is a stunning album and a great thing to buy if you're new to melodic black metal but I have something to correct from the other review: "For those hwo have died" is not a classic by Black Sabbath and is not by Black Sabbath and it does not exist. On this album is a cover of the song "For those who died" by the brilliant late eighties thrashers: Sabbat where Dani sings with ex-Sabbat, ex-Skyclad singer Martin Walkieyer.
