Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

The Cure for musical ennui .......2007-02-15

Whenever I'm mourning the death of our old friend, Good Music, I just slap any Cure CD onto the disc player. The Cure is the definitive "80s and beyond" band. Their mercurial pop melodies mingled with singer Robert Smith's Poe-meets-Rimbaud-meets-Dr. Seuss lyrical musings and plaintive wail make The Cure a truly mesmerizing presence. All of its albums are stunningly solid efforts, including the recent "The Cure" and "Bloodflowers," but 1985's "Head on the Door" is its most intriguingly layered offering, serving up an experimental foray into various musical styles; bits of flamenco, Japanese new wave, funk, hard rock, and even jazz sneak their way onto this magical album. The best part is, the Cure manages all the musical genre-melding without surrendering its trademark surrealistic sound.

a Very Simple Equation.......2007-01-09

Take one part renewed band confidence and camaraderie, one part incredibly strong songs, one part compelling visual identity ( this was, after all, the mid-Eighties ), throw in the fact that they're English and just *slightly* mad and you've got the recipe for the undeniable, unstopable force of "the Head on the Door." Helped no doubt by two of the best, most recognisable singles these lads have ever released, THOTD finally broke the Cure as a viably popular band around the world. I think the main reason is that this is an all-Cure-for-all-people kind of album. Neither completely bleak nor completely "pop", it has elements of all the sounds the Cure had explored up to that point. A few angry, tense moments ( "Push", "Screw" ), melancholy navel-gazing ("Sinking"), a bit of mindless dance fun ( "Close to Me", "the Baby Screams" ) some world music textures ( "the Blood" "Kyoto Song" ) and timeless pop ( "Inbetween Days", "A Night Like This", "Six Different Ways" ) all come together in this, a definite keeper in the Cure's catalogue. The remastered reissue is a real sonic improvement, the liner notes, commentary and photos are nice extras, and the demos and live performances on the bonus disc show the song development in a fascinating way. A Highlight of popular music, and Very Highly Recommended.

Ripping review.......2006-08-26

I'm going to handle this the same was as Kiss Me and not say anything about the CD itself, what for? We all know it by heart anyway. The bonus stuff? Interesting, but hardly essential.

The question is how has the music improved from the "standard" CD? Methodology? I ripped the new CD using Winamp, and to be fair, re-ripped the old one, using the same settings. I kept neither one, because some kid on usenet did an even better job than me . . . hey, that's fair, I bought this, so quiet now. I'm not about to cheat Bob. In any case, I made a new playlist in Winamp and flipped back and forth between the rips.

Results? Like Kiss Me, more presence and punch in the new versions vs. the old. Is it startling? No, and it's possible that I could have tweaked the settings to bring up the old version to sound similar. Limitations? X-Fi driving an HK 3400 into Ascends and a Sony subwoofer . . . and totally wrecked 55 year old ears.

Recommendation? Cure fans must of course have it. No one else is listening, so I don't suppose it matters much what else I say! But it's not an earthshaking improvement I'm afraid. Faith was helped quite a bit, the original was kind of muddy in comparison, but as you go forward the improvements get harder to find. Ah well, let's move onto the grail. I'm sure that will bring the audiophiles out of the woodwork!

CD Review: The Cure - The Head On The Door: Remastered And Expanded Edition

Have you ever been to a concert where nobody showed up?

I've actually been to a number of these type of shows over the years. I can remember for example seeing Genesis with Peter Gabriel around the time of Selling England By The Pound with about 50 other people in the 8000 seat capacity Seattle Center Arena. The crowd was so small they actually put the stage in the center of the arena and had one full half of the place curtained off. Genesis themselves, God Bless Em', still delivered their full theatrical spectacle even if it must've felt more like a dress rehearsal to them. So roughly fifty delighted fans we're treated to Peter Gabriel complete with his various fox heads and masks, weaving his stories around the wildly progressive for the time sounds of Genesis at a creative peak, years before they devolved into the worst formula rock band of all time under Phil Collins leadership.

I had another such experience seeing The Cure about ten years later in the same building. Same deal. A curtained off stage in the center of the arena this time before a slightly more respectable crowd of about 200 devotees decked out in various shades of gothic black.

My interest in the band at the time was strictly casual as the darker sides of my musical taste ran more to bands like Echo And The Bunnymen and the lesser known Chameleons. So I really didn't know what to expect from the band who would soon launch a million or so covens of goth kids around the globe.

In a word, The Cure were dark. Very dark.

So much so it prompted the friend I went with to come up with one of the most original one sentence reviews of a concert I've ever heard.

By the second song my friend looked over at me and said, "Glen, it's midnight and the crows are beckoning." It was at once the most hilarious and the most accurate description of what we saw on that particular night I've ever heard.

But there was also some very interesting musical terrain being mined by the Cure onstage that night. In between all of the darker hues, you could make out some very distinctive pop hooks and even a hint of funk in the basslines. Underneath the wiry jet black hair and pasty white facial makeup, Robert Smith was also an impressive vocalist who managed to somehow make the dark detachment of his songs sound almost, well emotional.

About a year after that show The Cure released The Head On The Door, the album many fans cite as the record which began The Cure's evolution from the goth dungeonmasters that I saw in concert that night into the worldwide pop phenomenon that produced a string of hit albums like Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me and Disintegration.

And make no mistake about it, with The Head On The Door, Robert Smith was intent on broadening the musical canvas of The Cure. Coming off what was arguably The Cure's most non-commercial album ever, The Top, The Head On The Door sounds like a downright collection of pop singles by comparison.

The themes of darkness and isolation are still prevalent and the album still has enough minor chords to keep the black nail polish crowd happy. But there are plenty of hints here at the poppier direction to come, most notably on tracks like the leadoff "In Between Days" and the hit single "Close To Me."

On "Kyoto Song", Smith incorporates oriental brushstrokes into the mix. On the album's standout track "A Night Like This," the band mines a more familiar dark drone which is then broken up about midway through by the sort of gorgeous sounding sax solo you'd find more at home on a Supertramp record.

Returning bass player Simon Gallup again provides a hard funk bottom popping his way through what would otherwise be more standard Cure fare like "Screw." The seeming contrast of a decidedly funkier rhythm section and the more standard doom and gloom of The Cure actually works remarkably well throughout The Head On The Door.

On the remastered treatment of this new version from Rhino, those nuances--from Gallup's bass popping to the broader textures added to the Cure's trademark drone--are newly enhanced in the mix, making this reissue that all too rare case where the treatment is actually warranted. The recording here is mixed several notches brighter, allowing the high end to shine far above the droning low of the original version.

The bonus disc is also truly a real bonus. Nearly all of Head's original 10 tracks appear here in various stages of their growth in demo versions. The result is a rare glimpse into the actual creative process where you are able to almost visualize these songs as they began to take shape. On "A Night Like This" for example, the smooth sax solo of the final version veers into more experimental territory, sounding almost like something out of the Coltrane book of avant garde jazz.

Rhino has also reissued new remastered versions of The Top and Kiss Me, Kiss Me which I will most definitely check out based on the results here. If those reissues are anywhere near as surprisingly good as this, this represents an all too rare example of the label getting it right, rather than just simply cashing in.

A dramatic shift........2006-08-18

A distinct change of direction, "The Head on the Door" finds the Cure drifting towards pop music for the first time. This is really enabled by the band-- with the return of bassist Simon Gallup to the fold, leader/vocalist/guitarist Robert Smith had the anchor that the band needed. Gallup could play the morbid, goth sort of basslines that the band cut their teeth on, but he could also manage a bright funk and pop sound. Ditto for drummer Boris Williams, who provided a fine foil for Gallup in the rhythm section. But just as key was the presence of guitarist Porl Thompson, who allowed Smith to construct shimmering guitar textures. The group is rounded out by founding member Lol Tolhurst, contributing on keyboards (although in the liner notes, his contribution is played down quite a bit).

The shift in sound is obvious right from the start-- bright acoustics, delicate synths and an overall light touch lead the superb "In Between Days". Likewise throughout the album, this variation of texture is what carries the record-- the minimalist Asian textures ("Kyoto Song"), Spanish gypsy rhythms ("The Blood"), funky bass (standout track and single "Close to Me") and frantic, punky stuff that wouldn't've sounded out of place on their debut but for the improved songwriting and musicianship ("The Baby Screams").

Still, for all this good, sometimes it gets a bit dull ("Six Different Ways") and the pieces occasionally don't take off and aren't exactly memorable ("Push", "Screw"). The net result is a mixed bag, when it's good, it's great, but while none of it is bad per se, some of it doesn't stand out.

The deluxe edition of the album features fantastically remastered sound, a set of demos including material that didn't make the album, and a handful of live tracks. It makes for a fine collection and in many cases, the evolution of the pieces is obvious. What's noticably missing is the significantly hotter single remix of "Close to Me" that ended up on "Staring at the Sea" (and subsequently "Greatest Hits"). At the least, the whole record sounds absolutely fantastic courtesy of remastering and includes a nice booklet detailing the band's history during the recording.

A lot of folks really love this album, I've always looked at it as a stepping stone on the way to "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me"-- it's a decent record, but they'd very shortly do much better.

There are many, many Andrew Lloyd Webber albums out there, including cut-and-paste compilations and songbooks from individual artists, most notably Sarah Brightman, Michael Crawford, and even Jose Carreras. The Premiere Collection is probably as authentic as you can get in a hits album, however. In addition to the most popular selections from the original casts of Evita, Cats, and Jesus Christ Superstar, the 57-minute album includes two selections from Tell Me on a Sunday (also recorded by Bernadette Peters as Song and Dance), the title tune from Starlight Express, the "Pie Jesu" from the Requiem, and a snippet from the Paganini Variations, thereby allowing you to hear the good stuff without having to spring for the complete albums. Note that the three selections from Phantom of the Opera are the 1986 pop singles instead of the cast recordings, meaning Steve Harley rather than Crawford sings with Brightman on the title tune and Cliff Richard subs for Steve Barton on "All I Ask of You." (Crawford does sing "The Music of the Night," of course.) This 1989 compilation was too early for Aspects of Love or Sunset Boulevard, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is ignored, but these omissions are rectified in the follow-up album The Premiere Collection Encore, and the American-slanted version, The Very Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Broadway Collection. --David Horiuchi

My sister had this and it got destroyed. She wanted an other, This was the only place I have found it!! Very hard to find! I have been to every music store in my area. She loved it!! And was so happy to have it again. Anyone who loves Andrew Lloyd Webber will love this. As it has many songs from some of his most famous plays with the original cast. Great item.

This CD is a great compilation of some of Andrew Lloyd Webber's hits. If you are just looking for a "quick fix" for your Broadway craving, this is a great value.

I think this album is F-A-I-R because it has one starlight express song and zero aspects of love songs. This is why i liked the album The reason i said that this is a fair album is that I like Starlight Express better. Song i like are "The Phantom of the Opera", "Take That Look off Your Face", All I Ask of You", "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", "Mr. Mistofflees," "Superstar," "Memory", "Starlight Express", "Tell Me On A Sunday", "Music of the Night", "Another Suitcase in Another Hall", and "I Don't Know How To Love Him". I dislike the following songs:" Track 6" and the last one because the last one was hard to understand and track 6 is instrumental.

Superb collection.......2003-08-11

... It is a collection of the best of ALW's creative efforts, and a collection of great performances. Anyone who loves "Broadway" should have this disk in their collection.

I really love this cd. ive always wanted to hear the main title from the movie and when i got this cd i was really happy and when i heard it i felt like i was watching the movie again. Elfman is one of my favorite and best composers since John Williams!!! This is a MUST have!!!!

Missing some music pieces.......2006-10-14

I decided to buy this CD after wanting a piece played in Spider-Man 2 SO badly. I was furious when I listened to this and didn't find it anywhere. The piece I was looking for was the piano piece during the scene when Peter hugs Aunt May when she's packing. You'd think it would be in 'Ant May Packs' but it's not. It is also missing some other great pieces from the movie. A bit of a let down...

A well Motion Picture Score........2006-02-10

This Orignal Motion Picture score was great becuase of the music that Danny Elfman used on this Cd. I love #1"Main Titles",#2,and I love the Doc Ock theme. I really wish that they would of put in the Pizza Delivery when Peter delivers the pizza's. And when Doc Ock puts his arms up for the first time. But I love this motion picture score soundtrack. It's a great score to listin to. I highly recommend it! And it's a 48 minute soundtrack and the music in the film wasn't all in the soundtrack. But Danny Elfman did an awesome job with this Orignal Motion Picture Score for Spider-Man 2!

great buy .......2006-01-20

this cd is a great buy for spider-man fans because it includes most of the music score but not all. my favorite tracks are track #1 whick the title theme, track #7 which is titled the mugging/peters turmoil peters turmoil is the first 3 minuets and is also the theme when peter says I'm spider-man no more, I also like track #9 which is titled hes back, track #14 which is titled at long last love, and finnaly the classic but annoyingly catchy track #15 which is raindrops keep fallin on my head. other themes on this cd are train/appreciation which is track #10. also there is the track titled the goblins returns which includes a little of the green goblin theme.

Much Anticipated.......2007-01-26

I have been looking for this CD for years!! Our family had a Shaw Chorale LP which contained almost all the songs on this CD. We had a number of excellent holiday albums and played all of them often, but we wore the Shaw Chorale album out! Not only are the musical renditions excellent and very similar to earlier Shaw recordings, the nostalgia evoked for this listener is incomparable!

A Taste of Heaven.......2007-01-18

I received this recording on cassette from a choral teacher, and played it so often that I wore it out! I especially appreciate the purity of sound and the arrangements in this recording. Lovers of choral music will feel as though "Songs of Angels" brings them a taste of heaven!

Alas that Robert Shaw is no longer with us. Throughout his long and varied career he gave us choral music with exactness,good pacing,and proper execution though not all musicologists would chose his renditions.
In "Songs of Angels" recorded in 1994 he shows us that even in later years he just kept going and going. Giving us stellar performances of masterpieces such as "Elijah","The Creation" and other large choral works. Yet in this album he shows the same attention to detail and
enraptures us with that special beauty of tone and ensemble which was
was to be Shaw's watermark on his life's offering.

The Most Beautiful Sounds I Have Ever Heard.......2003-02-04

A fluid and seamless piece of heaven that transcends all classical and holiday music. This is an OUTSTANDING non-traditional Holiday CD!!! Many voices come together as one in these enchanting verses sung in languages other than English. It is just enough language mix to appease and intrigue the soul but not too much so that the listener does not understand the lyrics. For example, the English verse is sung then a verse in German and then back to English. Emmanuel is written this way. Other languages include French (Angels we Have Heard on High) and even Catalan which is a dialect of Spain.

Several of the songs were not traditional Holiday songs (at least for my generation), yet they were intriguing to learn and now I feel I know them just like the traditional ones. This CD offers a healthy mix of traditional and non-traditional songs on this CD.

If you can picture the most beautiful sounds you have ever heard you can come close to the joy this CD will bring you. It is February and I can't stop listening to it. You will not regret purchasing it&the only regret you may have is not buying all of Robert Shaw's holiday CDs.

Los Angeles pop-rock trio Tonic's choice of Bob Rock as producer of their third disc is an odd one. Rock is a meat-and-potatoes studio man known for dialing up the thud quotient (see Metallica, the Cult, and especially, Veruca Salt), while Tonic is noted for its sweeping power ballads. With the release of Head On Straight, they still are. Certainly, there are some jagged moments: "Liar" absolutely pounds and opener "Roses" growls, lyrically and musically. But there's unabashed emotion in tracks like "On Your Feet," "Ring," "Count on Me," the title track, and the gently rocking "Let Me Go." And then there's "Irish," a rousing, historic jig where guitars mimic bagpipes, Big Country-style, and singer Emerson Hart manages a credible Irish lilt. Perhaps Rock's Maui base proved irresistible, but really, this is more of the same stuff Tonic gave us with Lemon Parade and Sugar--sturdy, wide-eyed power-pop with lyrics reaching for something grander than "ooh baby baby." Let's hope Tonic feels they got their money's worth. --Kim Hughes

Tonic at their best!!.......2006-08-30

It is tough to believe this album has already been out four years, and tonic are still touring for it in 2006. This album is still as sharp and clean as the day it came out. Heavy and Melodic, all that you would expect from tonic. The only readily released radio song in my area was Take Me As I Am, and it is a good song, but only a small glimpse of what is burried on this disc. Starting at track one, Roses sets a loud fast pace for the rest of the album, with spells to rest like the tracks "count on me" and "on your feet again". My personal favorite is "Irish" with a close runner up of "Liar", both heavier songs, but irish has a Jig Cut that you can dance to. Other highlights are Head on Strait and Do You Know.

Overall, all the songs are very good, no real one that I drag through, an a fine investment, even for a new collector of tonic. I can't say any of their albums would dissapoint.

Love this Tonic---!.......2005-09-10

I've only knew tonic for 6 months, and just purchased this CD 2 months ago and already obsessed with it. They have one of the best rock sounds I've heard and don't quite understand they didn't quite get a recognition they deserve. This is sure to be a grammy material, as you know it was nominated for the best rock album 2 years ago. The guitar work here is just great, totally a thick tonic-style. I'm always surprised to here new tunes each time I listen to---And that didn't happen much in music these days. So far this is a recommanded album for every rock fans looking for great music. Also recently, I've heard that guys are doing solo project. But don't get me wrong, they're still a band and hope they'll reunite and deliver more.

My favorite so far---I like them all. But the one I never thought I'd had like is Ring around her finger because the title is a bit weird to me. but it turn out I like it so much. So full and packed of emotions, I can listen to this any time any mood ~.

usually you buy a cd for one song and find that it is the only song you like on the cd. THAT is NOT this cd. i am new to "tonic" but this is one GREAT cd and while i do not love every song ,10 OUT OF 12 is not bad.if you're a fan of Train ,Matchbox 20 ,The Calling ,Lifehouse ,YOU WILL enjoy this cd.

Though I could write a rather lengthy explaination as to why I like this album, I'll keep my praise brief. I enjoy every song on this CD, especially "Liar" because it sounds like a good kiss-off to a deceitful ex-lover. In short, whether the song is slow or fast, the music is highly enjoyable and if you like Tonic you'll be impressed with "Head On Straight".

Tonic keeps on rocking.......2003-11-17

I have to admit that I am a very loyal Tonic fan...I have never been dissapointed in any way with their music. I have both of their previous CDs: Lemon Parade & Sugar...which I have had to re-buy because I have worn them out from playing them so much. Tonic is one of those very few bands who has an amazingly consistent high quality with each album. This is one of those CDs you put on and play the whole way through.
So why only four stars ?? The first two albums definitely deserve 5 stars..in fact, at least 6 out of 5...they are truly remarkable.With Head On Straight, they don't quite reach the same level of emotional rawness...but that is not necessarily a bad thing. They continue to have some of the best lyrics & musicianship out there today, always impressive. If you are a Tonic fan, this will reinforce that, if you are not, you will be after listening to them. With the first two albums, I was hooked from the get-go...completely addicted...took me a few months to even have any other CD in my player...with this one, not quite the same level, but after listening to it a couple of times, it definitely is just as great !! Bottom line : BUY IT

I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.

And the VERY funny "Scandelize My Name" is also worth the price of the total album!

Clearly you are mistaken. I don't know who that guy is-the person below recommended-but there is NO COMPARISON to JESSYE NORMAN AND KATHLEEN BATTLE!!!! Jessye Norman herself has *30* HONARY DOCTRATES from places like Harvard, Juliard, Yale, Cambridge....I mean HELLO!!!! That guy had no where near the ease, the musicality or even the breath support as these two veterans show!! It is a beautiful CD though it came out in 1991 and I HIGHLY recommend it.

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.

There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.

The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.

'Raindrops' was not one of Andy's best albums, and I don't think the 'continuous music' idea on Side 2 really works. 'Get Together' is up to his usual high standards.

I grew up listening to this album. The music is timeless and Andy's voice is at it's best. It fills my soul, lifts my spirits, and takes me back to my childhood in all ways that are good. Receiving this cd from Amazon was like reuniting old friends. Mmm...mmm...good.

I've recently bought this CD off of Amazon.com a while back. The music on this Andy Williams CD is excellent. I've admire Andy's sweet voice for about 3 years. What is so amazing is that Andy re-records these hits like Bridge Over Troubled Water and turns them into his own arrangement. One of my favorite songs on this CD is "Long Time Blues". If you also admire the voice of Andy Williams, then this is the CD for you.

How can you call these "Hymns".......2006-08-05

Not to harp on anyone here, but it's obvious that none of you grew up in a church or environment that had a good choir. I know, a Hymn is a genre of music, but a recording of a hymn isn't one if it doesn't contain HARMONY. If they're a "choir," then why don't the tenors sing a different note than the sopranos, altos, and basses? The organist is quite good, I'll admit, but you're wasting your time if you're looking for a good recording of these beautiful songs that were COMPOSED with harmony, not unison. If they want to sing in unison like this, they need to be stripped of their "choir" status and simply be called a "group."

wonderful collection of magnificent music.......2006-01-18

Most everything on this CD is very well done. The recording environment might have been less than perfect, but that shouldn't dimish one's enjoyment very much. Most of the arrangements are very traditional, with the notable exception of Amazing Grace, which though it isn't terrible, it isn't very good either. Some songs had verses removed, which is understandable, though it was poorly done in Eternal Father, Strong to Save -- they did verse 1 ("Eternal Father"), then they skipped(!!!) verse 2 ("O Christ, the Lord") and went on to the final verses ("Holy Spirit" and "O Trinity") -- which is skipping Someone important! However, outside of that, it was excellent.

If you like sacred music, or hymns, then you'll thoroughly enjoy this CD. If you're a Christian, you should enjoy this as well, no matter your taste in music (and you might just learn to like hymns as well!). It is a well-chosen set of some of the most magnificent, God-honoring music of all time, done is a mostly very traditional manner, and it was done well.

Flawed but enjoyable.......2005-04-15

The huge size and reverberating acoustics of Washington National Cathedral make it difficult to hear any kind of live choral performance clearly, even if you're sitting in the front rows in the nave. The Cathedral Choral Society is handicapped by having to record in this acoustically mushy space, and it shows in this CD, often creating an uneven balance between the organ and the chorus as noted by other reviewers. The repertoire is well-chosen, but the quality of the arrangements is uneven. Too often, the chorus seems to be singing in unison right out of the Hymnal, like any parish church choir at an ordinary Sunday service. Certain pieces do suggest the heights which the Society is capable of attaining. But the group never achieves the splendor that the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys displays every Sunday morning. Just when the Society seems to be getting there, the conductor pulls them back. And the shrill folk arrangement of "Amazing Grace" will have you covering your ears as the sopranos shriek clumsily, confusing volume with fervor.

A must own for classic church music lovers.......2002-02-16

I purchased this CD just based on the titles and am very glad I did. There are only two downsides to the album. First is the fact that there isn't a companion CD with 26 more hymns! Second is picky, but I do agree with another rater that the organ could have been a little louder related to the singing. Hope you enjoy listening!

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has made more than 20 seasonal recordings since its first one (for broadcast to U.S. servicemen in Europe and the Pacific on Christmas Day, 1945), but none finer than this one, led by the group's newly appointed music director, Craig Jessop. Featuring lush arrangements by Mack Wilberg and Barlow Bradford, it emphasizes the gentler, more rapturous moods of the holiday, especially in such beautiful settings as Wilberg's of "Whence Is That Goodly Fragrance?" and "How Far Is It to Bethlehem?" and Bradford's fantasy on "What Child Is This?" Balancing these are several selections in which the choir's blazing, full-voiced splendor shines forth, including Wilberg's festive arrangements of "Joy to the World" and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," as well as Bradford's colorful take on "Pat-a-pan." The choir's singing is magnificent. Listen to the way the men lead off "The First Noel" and to how the full chorus builds the piece to a gorgeous climax, or to the virtuosic job the singers do in the "Carol of the Bells" (with its echoes of Rachmaninoff's The Bells). Impressively backed by the Orchestra at Temple Square, this is a disc to treasure, and a tribute to the admirable work being done in Salt Lake City by maestro Jessop--who now seems poised to inherit the mantle of Robert Shaw. Is this the best Christmas album ever recorded?.......2005-12-29

There have been so many Christmas albums over the years, when I saw this I thought 'Oh no, not another one?' Then I looked at the track titles and saw that this was something different. Among the traditional carols there were many unfamiliar titles (I say this as a foreigner - some may be better known in the USA than in Australia). I decided to buy the SACD version of this release. What a revelation! Where do I start?
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is famous for producing very enjoyable choral recordings, usually with a religious theme, but frankly, on an international scale, they do not rate with the best (compare them with some of the better UK symphonic choirs, which is how the Tabernacle choir must be categorized, to see what I mean). But on this album, they have placed themselves well and truly in the international arena. Every aspect of their singing is, to me, perfect - diction, phrasing, musical expression, ensemble, and of greatest importance, a total involvement with and perfect expression of the words and the music. They don't sing about Santa Claus; they sing about the true meaning of Christmas, and mean it. And you really hear how well they sing in the few 'a capella' sections - musical moments that are unsurpassed.
Then there are the arrangements. These express everything from the implicit grandeur of God coming down to earth, through to the greatest tenderness of the simplicity of his birth as Jesus. All the orchestrations and choral arrangements are completely fresh and unhackneyed, ranging from the most exquisite harmonies through to extraordinarily bold key changes - the people who did these arrangements are amongst the best in the business.
Then there is the program. This ranges from fresh arrangements of old favourites (sample the fantasy on 'What Child is This?'), to an exploration of the most beautiful unfamiliar songs and carols you will ever hear.
Finally the engineering. Telarc are famous for the audiophile standards of their recordings, and this is one of their best. The SACD fully utilizes the multiple channels, without resorting to gimmickry. If ever there was a 'you-are-there' recording, this is it.
In summation: no matter how many Christmas CDs you own; buy this one too. The CD version works well (and remember, if you buy the SACD version - Telarc SACD-60552 - it will play on an ordinary CD player as well), but if you have the equipment to play the multi-channel SACD, you will get an even more rewarding experience.
All the above may sound over the top, but, as you may have gathered, this release has had a massive impact on me at every level. It is a prize in my collection. The greatest Christmas album ever? Quite possibly.

A Perfect Traditional Christmas Album.......2005-12-28

What Shall We Give to the Babe in the Manger. What an incredible piece, and how well- conducted it is. The music brings tears to my eyes, to be sure. The album is a classic example of how holiday choral music should be performed. This is done with spirit and tenderness.

If only other orchestras, choirs, and arrangements could be performed as well. Some are, but how often do we purchase an album just to find it not what we like? Fortunately, one can listen to clips of each of the pieces, before purchasing.

"What Shall We Bring" is becoming now my fondest Christmas song. The performance by the Mormon Choir and orchestra is incredible, to me. I've found other versions of the song, but this version is the finest, by far.

For those interested about my favorite piece: It is from a traditional Catalonian Carol, translated from Spanish, called, "The Son of Mary."

I have heard and enjoyed many recordings from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir over the years. Then, it happened. I heard Joy to the World from this album on the radio and it sent chills up my spine. That never happened. A thrilling arrangement. The other music equally excellent as described. If you have never been big fan of Christmas music, get this album and surprise yourself.

The Mormon Tabernacle choir is already known for their beautiful voices of praise. When you add the orchestra of temple square and the spirit of christmas, you receive even more. This CD portrays the birth of Christ. It is beautiful!
