Monster Magnet's superhuman cartoon mindset becomes ever more grand with each album. Indeed, from the first chord of God Says No, you know you're in for a wild ride. "Melt" finds head Magnet Dave Wyndorf in his "world of pills." "Heads Explode" rolls along with the same mock Mod-fervor as "See You in Hell" (from 1998's Powertrip) before tumbling into absolute mayhem at the chorus. Wyndorf plays the devil's advocate throughout God Says No, switching between adulation toward--and a thirst for--the annihilation of his bitch/goddess foil on "Doomsday" and "Queen of You." The bare-bones, bluesy "Gravity Well" is as raw as it gets; it sounds like an updating of Son House's "John the Revelator." And Wyndorf faces his own judgment day on the sin-soaked title track, finally coming down on the side of the damned. --Chris Campion

More Magnet to Blow your mind........2006-07-13
One of Magnet's least favorable albums. It is of course difficult to live up to previous outstanding albums like powertrip and superjudge...hell they're all great. Every Monster Magnet cd is seperate experience from the other albums. This cd has some magical tracks. "All Shook Out" being a personal favorite. A revisited track of the band's older material "Medicine" shows the bands amazing growth. The self-titled track "God Says No" is a calm, smooth, flowing song that entrances. "Melt" is styled to more older Magnet. All the tracks are diverse from each other, but the album's diversity stands as a great listen over all.
This Is The Hell Of an Album - Rock On Magnet!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-01-12
Monster Magnet will put you down on the dirty ground. I'm talking about rock and roll if you know what i mean. Dave Wyndorf is the last f**ing rock n roll hero, and this record is so amazing. Melt, All You Shook Out, Heads Explode, Gravity Well, God Says No or Kiss Of The Scorpion are 6 of the greatest Magnet songs ever. Cry, Down in The Jungle, Silver Future or Doomsday are really really cool too. And The lyrics are so so so cool, powerful and solid. The best lyrics Dave has written ever. Just as good as Powertrip or Monolithic Baby!.
Amazing record!!!!!
5 great songs is enough!!!.......2004-04-04
Sorry to say but 5 great songs is enough:
The sad state of affairs is that five great songs on any record now days is rare enough to make it a good record. Truly sad but that's where I'm at these days.
This CD is super cool and worthy of many honorable notes. Such as "it totally rocks" and "this is the defining state of power rock" and it's recorded beautifully well. I've put this CD on some of the finest equipment in the Hi-Fi audio industry and it stands up to any recording out there (even Sting...oh my god!) these guys have the full power of the industry behind them (hence the quality recording) but have not surrendered their commitment to super explosive power rock.
Fraught with cliché after cliché it still delivers. Electric Six could use a few of these tricks on their CD's these guys understand their genre or "format" like Nirvana and the Beastie Boys (also examples of bands understanding what we want when we buy one of their records) Monster Magnet knows how to deliver the goods to their fans.
It's BIG
It begs to be played loud
It compromises nothing for the format
It's a pretty darn good CD for anybody who makes the claim to be a fan of rock... Do you? Better yet, can you?
I know you will...I did and it feels really good
GOOD.......2004-02-23
This is a mixed Album it has some great tracks and some not so great, It's not as Good as POWERTRIP or Dopes to Infinity but it has its moments.
Buy Powertrip and Dopes to infinity first and if you like them try this 2.
Spacey Garage Stoner Rock.......2003-07-18
This band(especially singer/songwriter Dave Wyndorf) is hard to pigeonhole. On God Says No, they attempt everything from Sabbath worship on "Silver Future," to garage rock "Kiss Of The Scorpion," adding proto-slide blues "Gravity Well." Maybe they suffer from ADD. When these elements are mixed they produce potent music; "Melt" and "Heads Explode." Wyndorf's yen to experiment often gets the better of him though. Songs like the Doors-ish "All Shook Out" and the techno "Take It" sound foolish next to the band's stoner rock cuts. They would be wise to concentrate on just being a old fashioned rock band, instead outsmating themselves.

A throwback.......2000-12-19
It seems Monster Magnet was getting further from their psychodelic roots and more into mainstream metal with each album. Until now. With only a couple exceptions, Dave Wyndorf and the boys have fired up the drug-induced imagination that gave us Spine Of God and Superjudge. Giving the fans songs like Gravity Well and the title track proves they are still the masters of space-metal-psycho-sludge. Not to leave out the new fans accumulated from the smash success Powertrip, they pound out high-intesity hits like Heads Explode and Silver Future. Break out the tie-dye and mirrored sunglasses, great psychodelic rock didn't die in the seventys, it's alive and well with Monster Magnet!

Just say No.......2001-02-01
Monster Magnet's follow up to the successful Powertrip, God Says No, continues the trend of slick production started with Dopes to Infinity, but the band still remains fiercely uncompromising proponents of Dave Wyndorf's musically aggressive and lyrically cynical take no prisoners ethos.
The first track, "Melt", kicks off with a spare sense of musical foreboding sense before letting loose with the patented Magnet punch in the chops, thick, sludgy, relentless power chords smashing at your eardrums. "Doomsday", the third track, ups the ante, shifting the album into warp speed on a groove that would do the MC5 proud. "My Little Friend" and "All Shook Out" slink to a neanderthal beat that would daunt Grand Funk Railroad. "Queen of You" and "God Says No" slow it down without losing an ounce of heaviness, perhaps to deliver Wyndorf's pessimistic worldview all the more clearly.
Although Monster Magnet do not exactly break new ground, they continue to expand their repertoire, finding new textures and twists to slap onto their stoner rock blueprint - "Heads Explode" and "Kiss of the Scorpion" feature a 60s garage rock vibe, complete with organ, that channels the spirit of Louie, Louie and Psychotic Reaction. "Cry" indulges in an ominous, middle eastern sound, while "Take It" is a cheery little bossa nova (until you listen to the lyrics). For my money, though, the highlight is "Gravity Well", a crazed bit of space blues featuring a 'roided up slide guitar.
Overall, this is a consistently strong and satisfying effort from Monster Magnet. If you are looking for an army of muscular riffs to come charging out of your speakers and take over your living room, this is your new favorite album.

Back to true form!.......2001-02-11
A welcome return to the days of "Dopes to Infinity" on this new one from the Magnet! I found the last album "Powertrip" to be a boring, one-note rehash unworthy as a follow-up to the excellent "Dopes" - in fact, lead Magnet Dave Wyndorf bragged in interviews that he wrote that album in 2 weeks, and it sounds it. This new one continues their penchant for heavy, 70's-inspired stoner rock with an undercurrent of 60's trippy pyschedelica. And with a hint of electronica on a few songs, the band opens up their inventive vision a little wider. This album is being released domestically in March, so hold on to your $22 and wait - it will be worth it!
The Kings of "Stoner Metal" return!.......2001-01-25
First question, does anyone know why a band from New Jersey would release a CD full of new material on an IMPORT only basis? Anyways, for anyone who knows of Monster Magnet, let me just say that this album takes the songwriting growth of "Powertrip" and the trippy vibe of "Superjudge" and melds it into a CD that is hard to label. While the songs are tighter than earlier CD's, the "hooks" of "powertrip" and "Dopes..." are not there. Not to say you won't hum a few of these ditties, but I don't see any "radio friendly" singles here. As the album nears it's conclusion, the songs get longer and more varied. Almost as if, as another person stated, the long musical journey of Dave Wyndorf has been etched into this CD. Turn out the lights, crank up the volume, turn on the black light, incense and anything else you like and let the vibe roll.
Monster Magnet returns with one HELL of a ROCK album.......2001-01-12
Anyone who says rock is dead hasn't heard this and needs to a.s.a.p. in true likes of black sabbtah and the doors this album is amazing. The usual David Wyndorf lyricsmake you space out into his world of words. Songs like "Doomsday" show his apathetic views best, as even the album title & track "God Says No". The title track produces a softer side of Wyndorf as it is his plea and "God Says No". In which he describes being "ready for the new frontier" his post-Doomsday views are well sequeled (great track placing). When I say the likes of the Doors, you'll understand if you hear the organs/keys in "Kiss of the Scorpion". Great lyrics in "All Shook Out": "Hey little sister let's get together and cry, the world says i need some hell, i float on a big white cloud, i get to say i'm somebody else, just call in and say i'm somebody else all shook out". "Gravity Well" totally sounds like Dave loved his copy of the Big Wreck album as much as me, great slide guitar!! :) more to come if i can edit this?
Pretty damn close to 5.......2000-12-26
In my opinion, nothing Magnet could do could compare to the earlier Spine or Superjudge. That said, this album definitely breaks away from the poppy undertone on Powertrip. So do not expect another Space Lord for the passive fan. This goes more towards Dopes, or even slightly pre-Dopes. Not all the way back to the initial "Satanic drug thing we wouldn't understand," but a step in the right direction for those Magnet fans that still love that Nod Scene and Lizard Johnny.
Thank God!.......2000-12-10
Nothing much new here (and that is a very good thing). More of the same wonderfully trippy stuff that we have come to know and love from these psychedelic masters throughout their 10 year career. An eclectic sonic blast that will surely take the listener from the 70's to the year 2000 in no time. From the wonderful groove of "Kiss of the Scorpion" to the power of inital single "Heads Explode" this has it all. Snippets that could fit in easily with any of the prior varied gems in the Monster Magnet catalog. Breath easy as not a shred of music contained here is commercially viable so don't expect to hear these songs on the radio. Album rock personified with each and every track gelling together to create one satisfying piece of work. A very worthy follow-up to the mind-blowing masterpiece "Powertrip". Easily the best album I've heard in the new millenium. Monster Magnet remain truly one-of-a-kind and I am very thankful for that.

Another Great CD from MM.......2000-12-06
I found that this cd was more of an evolution than a return to "dopes to infinity", in style. And once again MM rocks the world with great rifts, I would definately recommend this cd to any Monster Magnet fan or rock afficionado.
A Rocket-Sled Utopia.......2000-11-18
Monster Magnet albums traditionally open LOUD, and 'God Says No' is no exception. This is more in the spirit of 'Dopes to Infinity' than 'Powertrip,' which is fine by me. I prefer Monster Magnet's Hawkwind-esque space-rock style, which is well represented here along with more experimental songs (some work well, some don't). With lines like 'I was thinking how the world should have cried/On the day Jack Kirby died,' you can't go wrong. It may not be a Planet of the Apes and a third-eye kind of thing, but it still rocks.

Monster Magnet - 'God Says No' (Interscope Records).......2006-04-28
Good 2001 stoner/psych metal CD release from Monster Magnet, have always dug this band.Old school fans shouldn't be too let down,as 'God Says No' is about as decently written, produced and put together as it possibly could be.Guess what I'm trying to say is,WHO could ask for more?Tracks that I found myself playing repeatedly were "Heads Explode","Doomsday",a reworking(?)of "Medicine"(off their 'Spine Of God' disc-see my review),"Kiss Of The Scorpion" and "Silver Future"(also featured on the 'Heavy Metal 2000' soundtrack).A should-have.
A rockin' follow up to Powertrip!.......2001-04-16
The new album from Monster Magnet is out in North America, and let me tell you, this one rocks! I got hooked by Powertrip and God Says No is no disappointment - it picks up where Powertrip left of and takes the band to a new level of intensity... There are not many artists today that you can buy a cd on the basis of the single and like the whole disc, but this is one of them... I just put it in the player and rock... My fave songs are Heads Explode, which is guaranteed to take the paint off your walls, Kiss of the Scorpion, with funky surf groove and Cry, which runs the gamut from sitar to walls of solid guitar sound! The band is incredibly tight and Dave Wyndorf is at his inspired best... Buy this cd!
God Says No, I say Yes!.......2001-04-14
Monster Magnet are back.
With their new album, God Says No, the force that is Monster Magnet are once again battering out ears with the most exciting rock'n'roll to come out in a long time. From the onslaught of opener "Melt" to the hilarious romp of final track "Take It", this album is an absolute winner. Singer/songwriter Dave Wyndorf has reclaimed some of the psychedelic territory that was notably absent on their previous outing, 1998's awesome Powertrip, but has lost none of the sheer grunt that the said album provided in abundance.
The new single "Heads Explode" rips along at a terrifying pace, augmented by wild surf guitar and swirling organs, and the next track, "Doomsday", simmers with a barely concealed venom that is strongly reminiscent of The Stooges in their heyday. "Kiss of the Scorpion" is a crazy 60s styled go-go dancing track that sits alongside the menacing throb of "All Shook Out" and the hyper-blues of "Gravity Well". With "Down in the Jungle", Wyndorf is at his most wicked, and this is preceded by "Queen of You", where the band claims brave new territory in an electronic based composition.
Despite the fact that many, if not all of the tracks are totally brilliant, the absolute highlight for me was the incredible epic masterpiece, "Cry". Extending itself to something like eight minutes, the song builds momentum to an almost unbearably intense climax, helped along it's way by Wyndorf's cool-as-ice vocals and some well placed sitar playing. All in all, this is an album that you must have.
GOD SAYS YES YES YES!.......2001-04-13
Monster Magnet albums just keep getting better and better. This record if for one of thoses days when you're feeling fired up! I love it and am already looking forward to the next album!
But i say yes.......2001-04-12
Every new album of Monster Magnet shows that his frontman Dave Wyndorf is searching new sounds forgetting all about the older albums. After Spine Of God and Superjudge (the first two albums with a clearly alternative feeling) arrived Dopes To Infinity, with his psycho-space sounds and without the distotion of their predecessors. After becames Powertrip which it says ROCK!!, with the guitars louder than never. And finally arrived God Says No, the last album, which is the actually the most complete album of the band, searching rock sounds in all the ways. The album seems to start with the classic MM, "Melt" it's probably the song with the nearliest sound of the other albums of MM, but it's only the start; the second one "Heads Explode" is just a new dimension ,probably the most commercial song of Dave Wyndorf career, but this is not a problem, it's just a very cool song with a superb rhythm that you will not able to stop of listening. Then becomes "Doomsday" (dark rock) to lead into "God Says No" that it reminds me to The Doors. The album keeps growing with new sounds to MM "Kiss Of The Scorpion", "All Shook Out"(dedicated to Marilyn Manson), "Gravity Well", "My Little Friend" and "Queen Of You". The last tracks "Down In The Jungle", "Cry" & "Take It" confirms that is not an common album of MM, it seems to be a new exploration of Dave Wyndorf to search more sounds, more fans and , why not, more money.

Suzanne Mentzer shines.......2002-01-17
I was at the Eternal Feminine recital at the Ravinia Festival in August 2000. This was a wonderful recital - also a world premiere - the CD is just as wonderful. There is a nice mix of style in the programming of songs. Suzanne Mentzer's interpretations reflect a complete understanding of each piece. Her tone is warm, strong, and beautiful. I highly recommmend this CD as an example of an exceptional classicly trained singer and also as an example of women composers, several of whom are not well know but are deserving of our attention.
