Eyebrows are raised as yet another punk rock band skips off to major label land. They'll probably have to spend the next six months justifying their move in every interview they do, as if they had just sold their little sisters into prostitution and needed to provide some sort of explanation for their heinous crime. Samiam want to make their living off playing punk rock--is that so wrong? Maybe it's not as black and white as that though; after all, there is the music to consider. How has this deal with Atlantic changed the band, other than providing them with a greater recording and video budget? Frankly, like Green Day, their music has always been well suited for a clean, loud sound, and producer Lou Giordano has done a fine job on Clumsy. The songs sparkle with powerful explosions of well-manicured, but suitably distorted power-chords, and vocalist Jason Beebout's gruff, throaty voice gives an edge to much of the material. Though they're often mentioned in the same breath as their Berkeley brethren, Green Day and Jawbreaker, they most resemble the latter, similarly drawing their influences from the sonic rage of H(sker D( rather than popped-up Buzzcocks. Clumsy is a fine album, brimming with power, emotion and a sincerity that is hard to deny. It is also, musically, a very potent album that shows no sign of commercial contrivance or compromise. From the enormous punch of the opening "As We're Told" to the fitful spasms of "Time by the Dime" that close the album, Samiam deliver a fantastic set of songs that are undeniably catchy and appealing without ever losing sight of that elusive, fading punk rock spirit. --Adem Tepedelen

You want to talk about pressure? Well, imagine if your first album (that's Naveed) sold nearly a million copies in your home country (that's Canada), the press described your group as the second coming and fans bordered on fanatical wherever you played live. Then (gulp) it's time to release your second effort and all eyes are upon you. That was Our Lady Peace's dilemma by the time their 1997 effort, Clumsy, hit the shelves. The release in the end did not reach the same level of intensity for most critics who provided a "been there, done that" sort of defense. Dedicated fans embraced the disc but in the end, "Superman's Dead" and "Automatic Flowers" did not provide the same out-of-nowhere surprise and mayhem that Naveed did. The band does have two very noteworthy fans, however; Jimmy Page and Robert Plant continue to shout the group's praises from the rooftops, which will undoubtedly bring new fans to the fold. --Denise Sheppard

A Frustrating Hit And Miss Collection.......2005-12-15
On their debut album Naveed, Our Lady Peace (OLP) set the bar high amongst its fans as their first record sparkles to this day as a full collection of energetic rock songs.
For their second record Clumsy, the band choose to be a little more experimental seemingly trying for a fuller sound, the end result is a hit and miss collection that showcases some of the band's best ever modern rock tracks (Superman's Dead, Big Dumb Rocket) while also revealing the band's tendency to write songs that seem drowned by the need for new elements (Story of 100 Aisles and Car Crash).
The good outweigh the bad but not by enough to warrant a must have status for Clumsy, for that I would suggest Naveed and Spiritual Machines. But if you are a fan of OLP certain songs on this album will always define the band to its audience, so if there ever is an OLP greatest hits record Clumsy will be well represented.
The question then becomes if you wish to buy this record is how good do you believe the good tunes are? If six out of 11 songs being of a high quality are enough to buy a record then grab Clumsy. Just be forewarned, it is a record that does not always reach the height's set by its predecessor.
Great Music That Many Don't Know.......2005-10-22
Most people started hearing about OLP about the time that their 5th album, 'Gravity' came about (back in 2000/2001ish), and I will be one of the first to admit that it is a great album. 'Clumsy', their second album, I feel is quite possibly their best work, even with now four more albums under their belt. Most of the songs on this album carry quite a bit of emotion with them, notably '4am' and 'Clumsy', and while to many people most of the songs are nonsense (mostly referring to 'Automatic Flowers' which, to this day, I can find no real meaning behind the song), but if you listen to the words, and not so much the sound of the songs, each one speaks of something which can mean something different to everyone. The music on this album is, on the surface, there to sound good (and it does), but even so goes deeper...if you enjoy music that you actively listen to, this album is a great buy for your collection...so long as you don't mind lyrics that repeat almost endlessly at the end of each song (I suggest hitting the skip button for the end of each track).
The Reason Why I Stopped Buying Cd's on a Whim!.......2005-08-15
I have come to the conclusion that people that post on Amazon are pretty much only those who love the group they are posting on. I mean every band I have been too from Beastie Boys to the Monkees to The Challengers are all 4 and 5 star reviews (not to mention really bad groups like Duran Duran and OLP)! So it's no surprise that OLP Clumsy gets all 5 stars also. But I'll tell you something, this cd caused me to stop buying music on a whim (or a hunch) based on one song, that song being Superman is Dead. When this cd was released in the states in the 90's, I woke up to get ready for work, fealing a little rough and put on the Canadian music channel because MTV stopped playing rock videos 15 years ago. They were playing OLP Superman is Dead and I'm like "oh wow that is very cool, and the little twirling toy robot in the video is awesome!". Go out and get the cd that day and its just horrible, tried to listen to it maybe twice and that was that. I stopped buying cd's that I knew nothing about after that. I mean I guess people are either from Canada that love this band or think Pearl Jam and STP are to old for them? I don't know but OLP Clumsy does ring a bell with me (was going through a friends music collection and saw he had a bunch of OLP, listened to it all briefly and I'll pass). It also just struck me that the lead singers twang he does is kinda like Jerry Lewis when he does that over accenuated twang he does, does anyone else pick that up? I'll give Clumsy 2 stars because Superman is Dead makes me think of the twirling toy robot in the video and now Jerry Lewis.
Our Lady Peace, Canada's Finest.......2004-11-10
Though this album isn't as big or suprising as "Naveed" it's still a rockable CD. Like many other people I never heard of OLP untill "Somewhere Out There" hit American Radio, then "Innocent", when I checked these guys out I was suprised to find they already had several albums to their name. Though Clumsy is a great album, it's far from flawless. The CD has a promising opening few tracks. "Superman's Dead," The best liked from this album is a great power song opening with a few gentle acoustic notes but it then explodes into a powerhorse of a song. "Automatic Flowers" follows continuing dazzle your ears and then continues on to "Carnival", Which I think is the best song on the CD. "4 A.M." is a glorious ballad that comes in a close second to "Carnival." Then, somewhere in the middle it sadly slows down and gets slightly dull and repetetive, it doesn't mellow out like it should, it just get's dull. "Clumsy" is the only break from the repetition.
This album really deserves five stars, I mainly blame the reduction on a fruity blend of several factors. I'll list them here, from the worst to the smallest grudges.
1. First and formost is the singer, not as I said above the redundency, but the singer, which enhances the repetition. He seems to have a love for adding his high pitched squeels and whines that make your ears bleed to bridges and whenever there's no lyrics present, I guess to break up the song somewhat. I don't know If I should blame poor production value or the singer himself. The CD starts off, his voice is soothing and very "pretty" dare I say, as the CD drags on his voice gets more and more irratating and mind wrenching and by the time it gets to "The Story of 100 Aisles" I can't listen anymore, this song makes me want to scratch a knife on a chalkboard to relieve the pain felt from his voice in this song, awfull! It really is a bruise (actually more like a tumor) of the CD- utterly horrible. "Car Crash" isn't as bad but is nearly as painful. Even the title song, "Clumsy" is sometimes annoying. Maybe a better track list would have remedied this problem, maybe if they removed "The Story of 100 Aisles" completely and ended the CD with "4 A.M." a much softer and much more pleasing song, It would have been a beautiful ending to a beautiful album.
2. Redundency. Starting with "Shaking" the CD gets boring and starts to lull you to sleep until "Story of 100 Aisles"'s nasty wake-up call, it starts sounding repetetive. That doesn't mean the tracks are bad or all sound the same by any means- they are just... repetetive and it drones you to sleep. Again, This could have been fixed by reorganizing the track list- drop down "Automatic Flowers" and "Carnival" to the second half of the CD break up the chunks.
3. The last grudge, some of the songs seem to be slightly uninspiring. Namely "Big Dumb Rocket" "Shaking" and "Hello Oscar." They're not bad songs, it's just they're very generic songs and if it wasn't for the singer's unique Billy Corgan-esque voice they would've sounded like they could have come from a hundred different rock acts. There's also no truly amazingly memorible and energetic songs like "Starseed" on this album, you could say this one is darker, but I'd say otherwise. This though is a minor complaint because the singer makes up for the lack of origonality by adding his own special touch.
A should-have-been-perfect CD was blown out of it's chance at being a big contender in the music world due to one atrocious song and a couple slight mishaps by the band and/or producers.
One of my favorite rock albums.......2004-07-01
First I have to admit that I am not a hardcore OLP fan, as I have only heard Clumsy and Gravity. Gravity is okay but Clumsy is a great rock album worthy of more than 5 stars really. Like a lot of people I was hooked after hearing Superman's Dead which is my co-favorite song by the band. The other is Clumsy, a great song that starts off sounding like a downer but turns into a song with a great message. I could say there are only about 2 songs that dont do anything for me, but some other really good ones are Automatic Flowers, Carnival and Let You Down. The lyric are meaningful, the vocalist sounds great and when you get to the bottom line this album just rocks. No 2 ways about that. It is a good album to have and I recommend it, but I think some of the older albums from them might be better by reading some of the previous reviews. It doesn't matter though, I love this cd and I will be checking out some other stuff from OLP.

hands down...........2004-04-30
one of my top ten favorite albums of all time. someone handed me this CD for free back in 1995 and i'm so glad they did. this is one of the few CDs that i can definately say changed my life and changed how i approached music. and if you like this band, you should check out Boston's Sometimes She Burns.
Hey! you got 'rock' in my 'emo'!.......2002-06-19
And the result is: Samiam's excellent non-crybaby emotional rock. If you like to tap your foot or dance while you empathize, then this here band are your guyz. One of my TWO favorite Samiam releases (the other being 'You Are Freaking Me Out'); This one is the more emo-slanted one, 'Freaking' is the more rock-slanted one. Both of them simply contain better, more concise songs, and cleaner production than their earlier releases. After you hear this CD, you'll have a little less patience for off-key whiny singers - trust me.
Saves the what? Jimmy Eat who?.......2002-03-31
I started listening to Samiam after I heard "Dull" on a comp. I picked up "Astray" and I really liked it. Soon after, I bought this masterpeice, which is by far the best emo cd I own. No other emo cd I own can compare to the depth, emotion and instrumentation on this one. My main complaint on "Astray" was that the druming was a bit weak. Here, the druming sounds excellent, much better than "Astray". Each song varies and is masterful. All the songs on this cd are excellent, and filled to the brim with depth and emotion. From the flavorsome guitar work, to the stellar drum work and the deep lyrics, this album is an emo masterpeice, anyone into the emo scene must get this cd.
The cd kicks off with "As Were Told", a fast track with the best druming I've heard from Samiam. Then it goes into the ballad "Capsized" and from there on, the cd does not fail to amaze. It is truly impossible to pick a favorite from this one, each track stands out in its own way, making this cd strong, and solid all the way through.
Forget Saves the Day, go pick up this cd to see what real emo is. Samiam are a truly amazing band, and deserve much more attention.
All time Favorite.......2001-09-18
I would have to say that this CD is one of the best that I own. I have owned it since it was released, several copies actually, and it seems that I hear something new everytime I listen to it. The lyrics are very thought provoking and the music, in my opinion, is incredible. If you enjoy music, BUY THIS CD ASAP!!
Before NFG and Saves the Day.......2000-08-28
When emopunk was actually emo and punk, with good pop writing, there was Samiam. These guys did the whole non-whiny emo thing when grunge was still big, with Jawbreaker, and is one of the few bands from then that's still going strong. This is an album I enjoy very much. That's all I have to say.

The Clumsy Lover's Rock at Turbo Speed!.......2003-03-29
I became a fan of The Clumsy Lover's when I saw them live at a club in Salt Lake City a couple of years ago. Now everytime they come to town I see them play...which is quite often. They are incredible! They have a unique celtic/bluegrass thing going on. I have all of their CD's...but this one is still my favorite (LIVE is really good too). I especially like their cover of Bob Dylan's "Don't think twice, it's alright" and the tune "London Bridge". I highly recommend this CD to anyone who may like listening to something a little different and extremely upbeat. If I'm in a bad mood this music always picks me right up and makes me want to dance. Just a word of warning...if you listen to this CD while driving you may get speeding tickets!

A Canadian musical crossbreed, the Clumsy Lovers combine traditional instrumentation with shifting time signatures and rock & roll adrenalin. Within the sprawling expanse of Smart Kid's 15 tracks, the Vancouver quintet surveys a wide range of musical territory, offering surprises at every turn. Bluegrass banjo meets reggae rhythm on "Bobby Banjo" and "London Bridge," while "Okay Alright" combines the new-wave bounce of Blondie with harmonies direct from the Beach Boys. On the syncopated, fiddle-driven instrumental "Cock of the North," the band manages to sound both Celtic and Caribbean. Much of the interplay displays the sort of energy that has made the Clumsy Lovers a popular live attraction, but "Better Days," "Don't Worry," and "Not Long for This World" show the maturity of their songwriting and command of the studio. --Don McLeese

Smart Choice.......2006-05-24
How do you explain this album. How do you explain the Clumsy Lovers. Long a fixture on the Irish Festival circuit, with the release of Smart Kid, the band shows a wide range of musical stylings.
For celtic purists, "Coming Home" and the instrumental "Cock of the North" are for you. I have heard a lot of comparisions to Bare Naked Ladies, based in part the the Claire Dane's reference in "Bobby Banjo", and to a lessor extent "This is Clumsy Love". Bluegrass fans will love "People I Have Been Meaning To Thank." "Coming Home" reminds me of "Already Gone" by the Eagles. Likewise I can see "Don't Worry" comming out of a younger Bruce Springsteen, and "Rockefeller" would be at home on a current song list. Speaking of the boss, if you are a fan of We Shall Overcome, the Seager Sessions, you will love this group. Just when you think the band might get to "pop"centric on "Smart Kid" or "Better Days" Andrea's fiddle and Jason;s banjo pull you back into familiar territory. We do have a new version of "London Bridge" which after appearing on Barnburner, Still Clumsy After All These Years, Live, and the bootleg cocnert from Denver, still manges to find a new sound.
After not getting lead vocal time on After the Flood Andrea gets to shine on "Okay, Alright" one of the funnist songs never to make it on the radio. It almost feels like a follow up to "Single Girl" from Under the Covers, only the trials of the workplace are the scence rather than the pitfalls of marriage.
Fianlly, my favorite. "Not Long For This World" is a lovely ballad by Chris dealing with impending loss. Andrea plays a delicate fiddle to start, envoking a feeling of mourning. Then Trevor's basic guitar cords and smooth vocals tell a story of approaching death and a joy for life. It is a love song too. IF you have ever been with someone you know would be taken form you far to soon, you will relate to this. The bridge between the second and third verse feels like we are in church and the congregation rises lead by the strenght of Gord's drumming. The final verses is the bittersweet moment with loss of life, the promise of something better, and plea that "this one time, let me be right". Jason's banjo and Andrea's fiddle playing lead us out and provide fitting passage as we leave the world of The Smart Kid and move on to the next stage in this exciting band's career.
I love the lovers.......2006-02-22
I was recently introduced to their music through a few free downloads. Needless to say, I fell in love. Good album, fun music, and talent beyond anything you here on the radio today. The Clumsy Lovers are definitely worth a listen.
Wonderful, Deeply Original Energetic Music.......2005-11-19
I caught the Clumsy Lovers last year at a Celtic fest and they blew the house away. I've bought some of their earlier albums and they didn't capture the quirkiness and energy. Smart Kid does. It would be hard for me to have a favorite song since I love the whole album. There's Celtic, bluegrass and Jamaican influences way down but its all Clumsy Lover's music. Fantastic musicianship, great singing and wonderfully crafted songs. When I bought this album a couple of months ago I was listening to it all the time and still play it a lot. By the way, I like this album.
Smart Kid Review.......2005-07-08
Great album A must buy for any Clumsy Lovers fan or for anyone that loves fun music
They just get better and better..............2005-07-08
I've become a big-time Clumsy Lovers fan over the last year & a half or so. My first introduction to their music was live in concert. It was amazing! So good that I've seen them a total of 6 times now (last time was just last week). As good as they are, the recorded music doesn't quite do them justice, but they do just get better with time. I have nothing but praise for this CD.

I heard them first in Northern California a couple of years ago. The music is electrifying. Trevor is beautiful and it makes you want to dance dance dance.
A must have CD.
Toe Tapping, Foot Stomping, Jolly Good Time.......2003-06-13
I can not say enough about this band. I first saw them at Bumbershoot in Seattle, just walking by the stage and had to stop and since then I've been on a mission to convert everyone I know to fans. They play all over the country but do a lot of shows out west. if you can see them live, DO - they ROCK. Under the Covers is a great cover album. I think my favorite song is "I'm on Fire".
Absolutely amazing!.......2003-01-11
I've seen Clumsy Lovers live, and have recommended them to friends who have also loved their music. They really are "Raging Celtic Bluegrass Rock" ... :) Incredible musicians who really love what they're doing.
Under the Covers is a great CD, all 'covers' of songs previously recorded by other artists. You'll be halfway through some of the songs before you realize why they sound familiar -- the Clumsy Lovers' interpretations are refreshing - breathing new life into songs, some of which are real 'standards' for their original artists (this CD features covers of a Bruce Springsteen song and a U2 song, among others) -- all of them unmistakeably reinterpreted with Clumsy Lovers' own brand of musical magic. And their version of "Single Girl" makes me want to get up and dance!
Regardless of the genre of music to which you normally listen, whether it's country, rock, Celtic/new age .... I've yet to find someone who didn't love this music and CD.
Raging Celtic bluegrass rock!.......2002-08-06
This disc is the latest effort from the Clumsy Lovers, and I would have to say that it is every bit as polished and refined and well-played as any of their other CDs. The whole disc contains a "different" approach to songs that you probably already know. I have seen the band live a time or two, so I must include some of the other artists that they cover regularly. It is an eclectic mix ranging from Bob Marley to the Violent Femmes to Kenny Rogers to AC/DC to Bob Dylan.
This disc makes wonderful driving music because it is so full of energy, and if you wanna sing along, you probably know the words.
Clumsy Lovers are my new best favorites.......2002-05-14
This is a really fun album; great interpretations of cover songs that range from traditional folk-type stuff to Beatles to Skynyrd. High-energy, lots of banjo/violin. If you ever get to see these guys live, go. Just watching Andrea Lewis play the fiddle is worth the ticket price. She's like a cricket on speed!

Love the LIVE feel.......2005-05-23
This album lets the listener have a taste of the pure rockin energy this band delivers live. It has a handful of signature songs not on any other CD. Its a Clumsy Lover must.
CLUMSY LOVERS ROCK ON.......2005-01-23
Excellent CD. I've spent most of the day listening to my large Clumsy Lovers CD collection - and I would highly recommend that past-time to anyone. I've seen the 'Lovers play live at least ten or eleven times over the years and I've never seen a disappointing show. I'm a HUGE fan of their earlier material (Picture This, Barnburner) but their last few studio releases have held numerous surprises as the 'Lovers continue to delight with new originals and surprising twists to covers (Hot Dog, etc.) Get this CD, and then start collecting the rest of them. Sign up for the Clumsy Lovers newsletter and you'll likely be offered bootleg CD's or first grabs on new releases down the road. And yes, Andrea, if you're reading this - I'm the one who yells "Hangover!" every time you play Port Orchard, Wa. It's been a while. :)
Great recording of a great live act.......2004-01-29
I first saw the Clumsy Lovers in Seattle some five years ago, and I try to see them every chance I get. They are fantastic live! Their shows are full of energy, and you can't help but get up and dance. Andrea is great on the fiddle, and Jason rocks on the banjo and mandolin! They tour incessantly, so check their tour schedule.
This CD does a good job capturing one of these live shows, and I would recommend it over their best of, Still Clumsy After All These Years. My favorite tracks are the medleys: London Bridge and Stir It Up, South Australia and Let The Sun Shine In.
Great Fun.......2003-02-16
I first saw the Clumsy Lovers live in Seattle and they put on a great show! They tour constantly, have quite a following and are somewhat unique. The CL's do a mix of folk, rock, bluegrass and celtic with strong clear vocals and excellent instrumentals...including some very rockin' violin. This album has a really nice collection of their work. I especially like "London Bridge," which features banjo with a Reggae beat!

Your chance to hear stars on the rise!.......2003-01-08
If you love rock music and also enjoy all things good then this album is for you! The K-watts seconde effort brings it all to the table from the hard rocking beats of songs like "I Wanna Gotta Rock and Roll" and "Away With the Birds" to popy tunes like "Gamma Ray Girl" and "All Systems Go" this band is just like there name suggests AMAZING, catch them before they become huge GODS OF ROCK. Imagin the mind blowing effects of the Pixies combined with the lyrical qulity of an early Weezer with a tad of the Cars thrown in. Don't be one of the sheep tell the kids about how you heard about them befor they made it big.
Diamonds in the mashed potatoes.......2002-12-11
This is a rock opera album that attempts to tell the story of "Clammy Hands Mcgee" and how he finally found long sought after serenity by becoming a deaf, blind miniature golf champion. Wait..no it isn't about that.
O.K. It sounds like Geeks in love or something to that effect.
O.K. they're my friends and I am trying to promote them but they rock, they really do!!!
more like, The Amazing Rock-A-Lots.......2002-11-23
This CD is fantastic if I do say so myself. Geek rock at it's finest. They put the ROCK in geek rock, no doubt about it.
Now this is Geek Rock!!!!.......2002-11-14
The Amazing Kill-o-Watts have been around for a while. Hailing from Peoria, IL, Iowa has become their second home. Their newest album Terror of Technology is a mix of older songs that they have been playing for a while and some brand new ones. The amazing kill-o-watts combine geek rock (weezer sounding) with 80's rock (devo). They also mix in some surf rock for a sound that will get you dancing and singing along.
The kill-o-watts combine male and female vocals wonderfully. "plug it in turn it on" is a great example of this. The kill-o-watts also mix comedy with their songs. Take the song "aquaman" about the superhero of the same name. Or there's the song "Gamma Ray Girl" with the line "Do you remember when I first kissed your face, do you remember spraying me with mace."
The kill-o-watts also have songs that would be labeled "emo." "We're just wasting time" would be one of those. Sung by the bassist, Marsha it also shows how talented this band really is. Another highlight on this CD is "Dumb Girlfriend." It sounds like a 50's rock/surf song. It is a song that you would expect to hear in a movie such as "Beach Blanket Bingo" or "Gidgit." This is another song that show the humor they put into their music.
There are some songs that keep this CD from reaching it's full potential. "Rearranger" is one of those songs. It isn't as polished as the other songs on this album. Likewise with the bonus song on the CD. I know it is meant to be funny but they have done it on this CD before with talent. The bonus song just doesn't have the musical talent the other songs have.
This band is a band you should definitely check out, and if you get a chance try to check them out live.

GOOD INTRO CD TO CLUMSY LOVERS.......2005-01-23
This is a good intro CD to the Clumsy Lovers as it is basically a compilation of previously recorded items. Take a listen to this and then go to "Picture This," "Barnburner," and other releases by the group.
In deference to the previous reviewer, I don't particularly care to listen to disc one of this set over and over again, but disc two is CLASSIC Clumsy Lovers and a very good demo of what this band is capable of. Can never get enough of "Paddy's Leather Breeches" and other classic CL covers and originals...
good, but get "After The Flood" first.......2004-07-19
This is a compilation CD of stuff the Clumsy Lovers did before 2001. It's very interesting and has a lot of great songs, but some of the material is basically demos and a lot of it features some musicians and/or singers no longer in the band. Definitely worth getting if you're a fan of the band and I listen to it as much as any of their cd's. But if you're just coming across them, don't let the "compilation" tag fool you into thinking this is a good intro. Start with "After The Flood", the newest and strongest, and then move to "Barnburner" and "Under The Covers". If you're hooked (which you will be), then check this one out.
Great Tunes!.......2003-05-22
This is a collection of the early songs of the Clumsy Lovers, a bluegrass/celtic/rock band from Canada that I first encountered in the NW (but have had the pleasure of seeing in Arizona as well). The energy of the musicians comes through on each song on this CD. They play fast but with great skill. This CD contains both cover songs and originals and is a MUST BUY for fans of not only the genre, but for all music lovers who appreciate good musicianship. "Chim Chim Cheree," "Shakespeare Song," and "Urban Decay" are among some of the best gems on this collection.
