5 out of 5 stars Stellar.......2007-03-16

Before I bought this CD the only Winger I knew of were Seventeen, Madalaine, Easy Come Easy Go, and Headed for a Heartbreak....but let me tell you that the slower tracks Under One Condition and Who's the One have exceeded my expectations on Kip Winger's musicianship as well as his lyrics. New songs to me, especially Down Incognito and Blind Revolution Mad are automatic favorites!!! I'm really diggin the new track On the Inside too!! Keep rockin Kip!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection of Songs From One of the More Underrated Rock Bands.......2007-03-08

I was never a huge Winger fan in the late 80s when I was in college, but did dig "Seventeen" and Reb Beach's incredible melancholic guitar solos on "Headed for a Heartbreak." And I never listened to Winger's two albums following their initial album. So when I heard Winger was touring in 2007, I decided to buy this "best of" compilation so I would know most of the songs at the concert I was going to attend. I've probably listened to this CD 40 times in the last month -- I had no idea how many cool songs this band had, and what a great song-writer Kip Winger really is. There is no filler on this compilation, and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes high quality, hard rock. The sleeper song in here is "Hell to Pay," which is an outtake from the third album "Pull." Absolutely hard rocking.

5 out of 5 stars WINGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-07-21

This is a great album, and I am more than happy I own it. It's just the perfect blend of rock what can I say it's winger right? (But I wish Kip could lose the attitude). This cd desearves your attention, I definatly recommend this to any of you fans out there.

5 out of 5 stars WINGER ROCKS! HOWARD JONES $UCKS!!!.......2006-02-21

There a "Music Fan" reviewer out there that dares to put down Winger and praises those dumb-asses Beavis & Butt-Head! He also goes on to say that(one of the artists he listed)Howard Jones is Cutting Edge music...WHAT???!!! First of all Howard Jones' music Sucks and secondly HOWARD JONES IS NOT HARD ROCK/HEAVY METAL! Winger is an AWESOME BAND and that reviewer needs to get a clue because he does not know what the hell he is talking about!

5 out of 5 stars This isn't wimp rock, this is true talent from the band.......2004-09-16

I have all three Winger albums - Winger, In The Heart Of The Young, and Pull and bought their greatest hits cd. They are all good. Kip Winger, Reb Beach, Paul Taylor, and Rod Morgenstein put a lot of time and effort and care into all the songs and it shows when you listen to all four albums. On the other hand they are very talented musicians. Also, I love the guitar sounds on each album because they really stand out. I'll drink a beer to this greatest hits compilation.

THIS BANDS ROCKS!THIS DEBUT ALBUM WAS VERY SUCESSFUL. STAND OUT TRACKS INCLUDE TWO MAJOR HITS "SEVENTEEN" AND "HEADED FOR A HEARTBREAK" ALSO INCLUDED ARE GREAT SONGS LIKE "MADALAINE" AND "HUNGRY". I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS RECORD TO ANY ROCK FAN.

4 out of 5 stars I Still Like This.......2007-03-30

This album and Kip Winger is so chessey you can't help but like it. Both side 1 and side 2 of the cassette tape have a good selection of songs. We thought Montel Jordan was a joke when he first came out. We the public are forced to put up with chessey music from artists who lost their sense of humor. The people who would give this album great reviews lost their humor with like the second Winger album from 1990. Tastes were starting to change to classic rock, gangsta rap and hip hop.

5 out of 5 stars Hair bands forever, grunge bands never! :).......2006-11-23

First of all, I don't understand why Winger has such a negative reputation. People who lived in the 90s and even people who live in the new millenium LOVE to criticize the 80s and often write nasty reviews of Winger's music. Why can't they see how much more talent Winger has than say Nirvana or Pearl Jam? Guitar virtuosos Reb Beech and Paul Taylor could play guitar better with their toes than Kurt Cobain or Eddie Vader could play with their hands. Kip's bass and Rod's drums are a way better rythem section than Dave Grouhl or Chris Novosellic. Even Kip's voice is far better than Kurt's monotone mumbling. If you like well played rock/ pop metal and aren't biased against the 80s and everything that ever came out of it, you'll probably like this album,. But if you prefer grunge and alternative rock, just go pick up some of that cr@p by Pearl Jam, Nirvana, or Alice in Chains.

3 out of 5 stars The one review I don't want to write.......2006-08-28

Of the 3 albums that we currently have from the band Winger, this is really not the place to start. Pull is worlds better and In the Heart of the Young also has it over this 1988 debut. The problem here is that there is just way too much filler considering the talent of the band. While songs like Hungry and Headed for a Heartbreak are top notch tunes, the other 9 tracks are below par for the most part. Without the Night is a genric ballad if there ever was one. Seventeen is pure cheese and higher and higher was a bonus track for good reason, it is plain bad. Poison Angel, State of Ememgencey and the cover of the Hendrix classic Purple Haze have some really good guitar work.
Overall, I think that this band had way more talent and showed it on future releases.
If you are a guitar fan, pick it up for Reb Beech's work. If you are looking for a solid record from a great band from this era, go and get yourself Badlands S/T or Queensryche - Empire

2 out of 5 stars Sorry Stuart...your band sucks.......2006-06-26

Long ago when I was in Jr. High School, during the height of grunge-rock, the uncoolest band, by far, was Winger. While just about any pre-Nirvana/Pearl Jam hard-rock band was considered uncool, Winger was singled out in particular as the epitome of uncool.

Did Winger really deserve the brickbats thrown at them? Probably not. They really weren't any worse/dated/cheesy than a million of their peers. Beavis and Butthead was probably the most instrumental in Winger's uncoolness, as the character Stuart (a fat, dorky hanger-on of B&B) sported a Winger T-shirt. Add to this the fact that Metallica's James Hetfield was seen on film throwing darts at a picture of Winger frontman Kip Winger.

With such infamy behind the band, I had to see what all the negative hype was about for myself.

While Winger's self-titled debut (1988) isn't really all THAT bad, it's still pretty bad. Basically, it's a by-the-numbers 80s melodic-rock album. Save for some impressive guitar work by Reb Beach, and an otherwise technically proficient band, there isn't anything all that special about this album. It doesn't totally suck, as it's listenable, but it isn't particularly memorable either. It's a totally generic, cliched 80s pop-metal album. There are the obvious singles, ("Seventeen") the power-ballads, ("Without the Night") the would-be anthems ("Madalaine") and a bunch of filler.

While Poison and Warrant's image/lyrics/music was embarrassingly cheesy, at least they had some good singles to back it up. Warrant in particular had a gifted songwriter in Jani Lane. Winger on the other hand doesn't have much going for them. While Warrant's biggest single "Cherry Pie" is embarrassingly cheesy, it's still a lot of fun. Winger's "Seventeen" on the other hand is just plain embarrassing. I actually cringe when I hear it. Is there anything cool about a thirty-something year-old guy lusting after a seventeen year-old? Winger's rendition of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" probably ties with Billy Idol's rendition of the Velvet Underground's "Heroin" as the worst cover song of all-time.

While Winger wasn't really any worse than some of their peers, unfortunately for them, being the textbook example of how 80s rock went wrong and how the genre became so saturated with corporate schlock will be the band's legacy.

I would recommend Winger's debut for two groups of people. If you love 80s melodic-rock, there is probably something in Winger's debut for you. Although you are much, much better off checking out albums by Motley Crue, Warrant, Poison, Skid Row, Dokken, and so on. Or, if you are interested in checking out a good "comedy" album, you will no doubt have a lot of fun with this CD.

The good news for Winger is that, as bad as they were, they weren't the absolute, bottom-of-the-barrel WORST pop-metal band of the genre. That honor goes to Slaughter.

4 out of 5 stars This is a Very Good CD!!.......2007-07-29

Loved the first Album "Winger". On this CD, the song writing is almost as good as the first. But,the production value is much better than the first! The guitar tones are not so thin sounding.(Much more chunk) The drums don't have all that really wet reverb that the did in the eighties, so you get the tone of the drums coming through. NICE!! Kip Winger's voice is EQ'd with more lows and sounds nice and fat. Man! He can still sing his a__ off. My favorite song is M16. Great Job Guys! Keep it coming.

5 out of 5 stars A No Brainer.......2007-06-22

Incredible album. I actually was in contact with Kip Winger via email recently. He wrote back immediately, and that impressed me. This CD impressed me as well. Blue Suede Shoes is my favorite. Mixed into the complexities, are some chord changes that remind me of the 70's...old and new melt together here. It takes a couple listens before you appreciate how cool this really is.

4 out of 5 stars A Solid Album from an Underrated Band.......2007-06-13

For those of you out there excepting "Pull II" -- it ain't happening. That was close to 15 years ago and people and times change. LET IT GO. If you are able to put the "old" Winger behind you and simply expect great song-writing, vocals, and musicianship, this is a pearl of an album that's worth buying. I have listed to Winger IV probably around 35 times or so. It grows on you and doesn't get old. IMO, "Blue Suede Shoes" far and away is Kip Winger's best song ever; it's an anthem to our GIs written from their point of view that, had Winger had the popularity it had in the late 80s/early 90s, would have been on heavy MTV rotation and a top 20 hit. "Four Leaf Clover" features a great rythm guitar riff. And "M-16" is another cool song.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the wait.......2007-03-27

I know some of you were disapointed with Winger's new release but i think they did a great job. Kip's voice sounded strong and clear. The over all sound was well produced. It was softer then their earlier recordings but i think this is a "Mature" band now. If i get a chance to see them i will not hesitate. Come on guys, it's not the 80's anymore!

4 out of 5 stars Winger for a new decade.......2007-02-22

When I heard they were putting out a new release I really didn't know what to expect, as its been 14 years since their last one. What I found is that this album contains a refreshing mix of the old and the new, both the heavier driving sound contained on the "Pull" album mixed with some of the more melodic catchy hooks contained on the first two releases. That being said this is definitely not an 80's or 90's album, as their sound has been updated to be more in line with today's fare.

The best songs in my opinion are "Four Leaf Clover", "Your Great Escape", and "Can't Take It Back", all of which rank up there with the best Winger songs of the past. Outstanding musicianship abounds all through the album, with the only thing holding it back from a 5-star rating in my opinion are a couple of tunes which I listened to once and didn't have any interest in listening to again. Overall a solid comeback release and hopefully there will be more to come!

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2006-06-21

I've always thought this is the best instrumental rock album ever recorded, as much because of Ken Scott's production as because of the band. (Scott lended similar brilliance to The Tubes, Jeff Beck, Missing Persons, and many others, and the Dregs were never the same to me without him.) I adore every track to this day, even though I still think the title track sounds like a beer commercial.

3 out of 5 stars Curiously flat for the Dregs..........2004-08-05

Die hard Dregs fans are probably going to hate me for this, but I find this one of the Dreg's less inspired albums. The energy and sense of fun was all but gone by this point in the band's history, leaving only the Dreg's superb musicianship and intricate charts. The one exception is the chicken pickin' blowout "Gina Lola Breakdown," which is the only thing that saves "What If" from a two-star rating. Casual listeners should get "Freefall" and "Night of the Living Dregs," both fantastic albums which neatly encapsulate what the Dregs are all about, i.e. a coherent and entertaining fusion of funk, country, jazz, classical, and rock music. Die hard fans (of which I am one) will want to get everything up to 1980's "Dregs of the Earth." Avoid "Bring 'Em Back Alive," the unfortunate 90s Dregs reunion.

5 out of 5 stars An instant jazz-rock fusion classic.......2004-03-06

In the late '70's, I went to see someone else, and the Dixie Dregs happened to be the opening band. All I knew about them was they were on Capricorn, the "southern rock" label. And when they came onstage, as I expected they looked "southern rock"--but then they started to play some of the most challenging and original music I had ever heard. I was transfixed, certain I was an early witness to an emerging musical genius. Most of the material was from this album, just released. I bought it the next day. "What If?" was an instant classic, and a defining work. The sound and style are strikingly original. The compositions are brilliant, spanning an incredible range of styles, with stops at rock, blue grass, classical, and jazz. The players are each instrumental geniuses, so technically adept they run the danger of being too facile. The music is mercurial, a blend of tight ensemble playing, well focused solos, and lightning fast interchanges between the performers. The Dixie Dregs demonstrated on "What If?" they were fully equal to the original Mahavishnu Orchestra or the Chick Corea/Stanley Clarke/Al DiMeola version of Return To Forever. And a lot of fun to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars A great album for all lovers of instrumental music.......2003-05-04

I picked up this album circa 1980, after seeing the band on TV's "Midnight Special." I'd been listening a lot to Jean-Luc Ponty albums like "Cosmic Messenger" and "Egocentric Molecules", on which the songs had fantastic, intricate opening and closing sections, but in the middle were long solos while the band vamped on two chords. The Dixie Dregs, who like Ponty were inspired by the Mahavishnu Orchestra, took Ponty's approach to the next level. While a Dreg soloed, the rest of the band was always doing something interesting to keep the listener's attention. The result was the best answer America has ever been able to produce to Britain's prog-rock bands like Yes or ELP: five virtuoso musicians, playing instrumental-only rock music with great melodies, intricate arrangements, and catchy solos, in a variety of styles that somehow all worked together. Led by Steve Morse, who for my money is the best guitarist on the planet.

"What If" has better production and more consistent songwriting than the first Dixie Dregs album, "Freefall". The cuts, mostly written by Morse, include straight-ahead rock ("Take It Off the Top"), progressive rock ("Odyssey"), ballads ("What If" and "Night Meets Light"), bluegrass ("Gina Lola Breakdown"), and even a baroque piece for classical guitar and violin ("Little Kids"--a passer-by once asked me if it was Vivaldi). The best cuts are "Take It Off the Top", the funky "Ice Cakes", and "Night Meets Light", but even the weakest track would be a highlight on many a lesser band's album. "Night Meets Light" is a stunner, a long, gorgeous tune with a lot of time-signature changes that aren't immediately apparent (there's a lot of 5/8). The Dregs' signature sound is electric guitar and violin playing in unison to create a wailing sound. Allen Sloan's violin work is especially stunning, able to both match Morse's breakneck speed and give a impossibly lush, romantic sound to solos on "Odyssey" and "Night Meets Light".

(1=poor 2=mediocre 3=pretty good 4=very good 5=phenomenal)

3 out of 5 stars Plenty of songs for the diehard Winger fan, but remember these are demos.......2007-04-11

First: If you are not a diehard Winger fan, do not continue reading, this release is not for you. If you are a diehard Winger fan, than this should serve as a motherloade of treasures amongst these recordings to warrant you purchasing this. This release is strictly for the hardcore.

I like it, but at the price tag I paid for it, it's a bit of a letdown. I have Winger Best of CD and IV (which both are excellent) so I thought I'd give this a try.

Now listening to this I failed to realize these are demos, works in progress of 37 songs from their 1st 3 albums in the late 80's - early 90's. These songs are demo quality so some are low end audio, some sound muddy, some have bass high up in mix, but it's not to were the listening is intolerable, just keep in mind that these are demos.

There are 10 unreleased tracks, and IMO, they were unreleased for a reason.

Overall, like I've stated, if you are Hardcore for Winger, then pick it up. If you are happy with their best of CD stick to that, because those final recorded versions of most of these songs aren't going to be topped with this collection.

kip winger is a very talented singer and song writer. this is his 2nd studio solo album. if you have heard his first solo cd you already know that it's not the same kind of music as he is playing in his band. music is like a mix of sting and peter gabriel, in other words very different. but don't be afraid, this cd is good if you are into that kind of stuff, but if you are looking for party anthems, you should look elsewhere!

5 out of 5 stars Winger is back! .......2007-03-16

When I first heard 'Blue Suede Shoes' on the myspace page...I was excited. I just got the cd back in December and I'll admit, it wasn't an easy listen. But I'm one who usually has to let the music grow on me. Well, it only took a few more listens and then that was it! I love every track on here. I love the emotion and energy Kip sings in every song and the addition of Cenk is AMAZING!!! My favorites being 'Right Up Ahead', 'Blue Suede Shoes', 'Generica', 'Disappear', and 'Can't Take it Back'. I've always been a Winger fan from back in the day but this cd is definately one of my favorites along with Pull. I just saw Winger perform live last week and was VERY IMPRESSED with the performance of the new stuff and the crowd sure seemed to embrace it all. I look forward to the 'making of' dvd for this cd. Like I said...WINGER IS BACK!

3 out of 5 stars dear diary, "ON A DAY LIKE TODAY" I wrote the WINGER 4 review.......2007-03-12

I have always enjoyed WINGER's music and I have a deep respect for KIP's ability as a singer and songwriter. I look back on his career which is not over by any means-pop metal rock, BEAVIS and BUTTHEAD abuse, loss, tour with BORDERS(solo) and a rejuvenation/rebirth. WINGER never was a critics success but there are many a faithful. WINGER 4 was a hidden treasure of maturity, meaning, a spiritual awakening of sorts. I really believe the last several years of pain, faith and a genuine expression of WHAT IF? helped him create this minor masterpiece. the sound is all WINGER-while not all cuts are radio friendly for the most part this is not one of those albums/cds. the best cut is obviously ON A DAY LIKE TODAY(I truly believe KIP is singing his heart to his wife who has passed away) and with each listen I give this - I enjoy just a little more. I can see this as a story unfolding a trilogy?---KIP and CO. have alot of passion and it shows in this release. I look fwd to uncovering and discovering the next chapter in WINGER's story.

    3 out of 5 stars Somewhat Disaapointed.......2007-01-11

After many years hoping for a new Winger release, I was chomping at the bit when the announcment came. When I finally received it I played it numerous times hoping that the music would get better. While there are a couple of shining moments there are just a couple of songs that are OK. The rest I feel is sub par for one of my favorite rock bands of all time.
It seems as if they have sacrificed the melodic continuity that kicked butt on the first 3 LP's for the experimental, alternative direction that IV has taken and that has disappointed me. The live shows in 2006 and 2007 are however Brilliant and I encourage anyone to experience Winger Live, just phenomanal !!

5 out of 5 stars WINGER WITH AN EDGE.......2007-01-10

This CD is for any of us left over Winger fans, which there are plenty of. The Winger formula is still intact with a bit more virtuosity and edge. Listen to Blue Suede Shoes and I bet it will bring a tear to your eye, powerful patriotic stuff. No ballads here, but plenty of quality rockers to knock your socks off. Opinion vary, but my faves are Right Up Ahead, Your Great Escape and Short Flight To Mexico.

2 out of 5 stars A Winger fan who thinks this sucks.......2006-12-31

Let me cut right to the chase, there is only really one semi-noteworthy song on this album and it's "Four Leaf Clover". I realize Winger's early works were quite pubescent and lacking substance lyrically, but the music itself did not lack substance. When Winger matured lyrically with "Pull", the band seemed to feel that the music also needed to make a shift. I think the best of both worlds would've been to maintain the great melodies and hooks inherent in Winger's early material with the lyrical substance of the bands latter works.

While I don't think "Pull" was bad musically necessarily, I think it lacked some of the really catchy hooks and melodies inherent in Winger's earlier work to some degree, however there was still a melodic thread that ran through many of the songs. If I were to rate Winger's early works as a five, I'd rate "Pull" as a 3 1/2.

With "IV", gone are most of the melodic elements that made me a Winger fan in the first place. Instead, they've been replaced with grungy / bluesy / somewhat more progressive rock elements. The levels of melodic interest seem (for me) more and more brief with each passing album, in my opinion.

The acoustic intro of "Right Up Ahead" gave me hope that the album was off to a good start, however once the song kicked in I thought, "WHAT are they doing?" It's supposed to sound hard and dark but it really sounds forced and contrived, in my opinion. However, I do like the first part of the chorus to the song.

"Blue Suede Shoes" had a promising beginning, but the chorus drags on and failed to offer the great melodic payoff I was expecting. I'm a fan of Kip Wingers solo work and feel the verses of the song would've fit well on a future solo album.

I didn't like "M16" from the get-go. It has a progressive/hard feel to it that didn't do a thing for me. Filler.

"Your Great Escape" is up-tempo party rock, in my opinion. The chorus has a slight melodic element to it but it definitely doesn't save the song for me. Filler.

Then we get to another, what I consider, contrived darker song called "Disappear". There's a brief melodic reprieve when the pre-chorus comes in but the chorus really doesn't do anything for me. This strikes me as one of those songs that's supposed to draw in modern rock fans, but in my opinion this song wouldn't serve such a purpose.

I do think "On A Day Like Today" would've made a great addition to a Kip Winger solo album. It's somewhat haunting and has a good feel early on. I think the chorus could've been a bit stronger, what with the haunting first half. This isn't filler but I don't think it's strong enough melodically to fit on a Winger album either.

I don't know what the band was doing with "Living Just To Die". It seems they were going for a somewhat semi-dark, dirty rock feel but I don't care for it. It strikes me as another contrivance. It's not a style I care for at all. Filler.

I found more of the same in the track "Short Flight To Mexico" -- dirty rock that tries to be serious. It doesn't work for me. The beginning wants to sound new and dark to some degree but it just comes across as misdirected, in my opinion. Filler.

Another downtuned modern rock effort can be heard in "Generica". I wish someone would tell Kip Winger the downtuned modern rock thing doesn't work at all for him. It comes across as sounding superficial and uninspired. It might work for Saliva or 3 Days Grace but it just doesn't cut it at all for Winger, in my opinion. This is one of those songs that does offer a melodic digression about halfway through the song which lasts for, I'd say, a good minute and a half. I think it's good (albeit somewhat repetitive) although Kip Winger doesn't really take it anywhere. Overall, I'd have to rank this song as somewhat of a filler.

"Can't Take It Back" isn't what I'd expect from the Winger of old but it isn't necessarily filler per se, in my opinion. This song strikes me as a downtuned semi-rock ballad with harder elements thrown in to make it darker than it would be otherwise. Not what I'd prefer but it's listenable, in my opinion. If "Four Leaf Clover" was a steak, this song would probably be the potatoes.

There's just so much that doesn't move me about this effort. If Kip Winger wants to move the band in a more modern rock direction, that's fine, but please make it modern "melodic" rock, not downtuned grunge / dirty rock that tries to be hard and dark.

I purchase this CD to replace my old cassette. When it arrived it was like getting a hot new album, except I know all the words already! The 80's rocked like no other generation has or ever will.

5 out of 5 stars Just as awesome as Winger's first two albums!.......2006-05-01

Winger is one of the GREATEST hair metal bands ever and this CD is just as awesome as "Winger" and "In The Heart Of The Young!" Anyone would be a fool NOT to listen to this CD or any other of Winger's albums! Winger totally ROCKS!!!!

The best song on here is called Spell I'm Under! Totally Winger! My favorite next to Miles Away and Headed For A Heartbreak! These Metal Ballads just have a special magic that these so called "ballads" of today's bands just don't have!

I love this whole album and it's just as WINGER as any of their other albums! It doesn't stray too far and totally sounds like them!

Another song that ROCKS is Down Incognito. I love this rocker! The music itself is awesome!

Blind Revolution Mad is another great rock song!

Actually ALL of Winger's CD's kick ass and ROCK!!! Get the whole Winger collection, you will NOT regret it!!!!

the previous review mirrors my thoughts; says it all.

its so cool, its a gush of ice water in the face after a long sleep, or

its so hot, be warned, it may melt your CD player.

whichever, go for it. this reconditioned my interest in hard rock and metel. it clarifies art, and pushes away noise.

5 out of 5 stars One of the few absolutely perfect albums.......2005-09-30

Winger... man, they just never get or got enough respect. Yes, this is the band that gave you "Seventeen" and it was a bit lyrically cheesy. Or perhaps you didnt like the boringly standard ballad "Miles Away". But, even from prior albums there were brilliant songs like "Under One Condition" that were unique and tragically overlooked as singles. Pull takes that concept into a full album of incredible songs... and even took Winger into some of the heaviest songs they ever laid down. Most importantly the songs are complex musically and lyrically without ever losing the ability to easily grab you. The musicianship is also absolutely top notch. Blind Revolution Mad, like many songs on the album, will tease you with its lighter intro before opening up into a straight out rocker. In fact, I think on first listen some might be taken back by just how much acoustic guitar is prevalent on this album (I know I was at first)... but, just stick with it... because once you absorb this album, you will never look back on the acoustic work as a negative in this case. Junkyard Dog nearly reverses the slow to heavy form on some of the other songs with being nice and heavy most of the song only to mellow out more in its ending (which is essentially a whole other song)... but it is done in a way that is extremely cool. The Lucky One remains my all-time favorite song lyrically... its just a clever way of constructing the message without being overly intellectual as some try to do in order to make their lyrics "impressive". It's also a beautiful song... and you can feel the pain in it. No Mans Land is another favorite of mine... nice and heavy, and driving, and yet very melodic... pretty much exactly what I prefer in a song. Down Incognito, the main single is a great song as well. Heck, there is no song on this album that isnt either great or very very good... hence why I think it is a perfect album. In for the Kill is another that starts slow and then still has a powerful chorus. Like A Ritual is cool more for its instrumentation... and I love the tribal drums in it. Speaking of that, I have to shout out to Rod Morgenstien's drumming... it is spot on perfect throughout the album... it completely accents and adds to the songs without overpowering them like so many drummers do. Placing your drum skills into a song is better than showing off everything you can do in every song. His cymbal work is top notch. The production on this CD is also great... it sounds excellent. I cant say enough good about it. I wish they would reunite as I think Reb and Kip together create better than when they are apart. Without Reb, Kip loses some edge... and Reb just doesnt write as well on his own as he does with Kip.

5 out of 5 stars The Lost Gem in Metal's Crown.......2006-10-26

Winger is easily the most maligned metal band in history. Wiped out by Nirvana, ridiculed by Beavis and Butthead, singled out for hostility by Metallica. In part, they deserved it. The pretty boy dancing in the videos, the big hair, Kip's unfortunate turn in Playgirl magazine. "She's Only Seventeen" will haunt them forever.

Forget all of that. Forget that you even know what these guys look like or sound like. This album contains what is arguably 10 of the most well crafted metal songs of the 90's. Incredible musicianship (as always), pop-sensible songwriting, and choruses and riffs so memorable it would make Lennon and McCartney proud.

Stop and consider who these guys are without all the hairband MTV hoopla. Kip Winger - Alice Cooper's bass player. Red Beach - classically trained virtuoso who stepped up to fill the gigantic shoes of George Lynch in Dokken. Rod Morgenstein - drummer of the 70's prog-fusion masters The Dixie Dregs (not to mention drummer for Jelly Jam with John Myung (Dream Theater) and Ty Tabor (King's X). These are three incredibly accomplished musicians and one of the tightest trios ever assembled. It shows on every tune, as does the hit making magic of the Winger/Beach writing team.

HIGHLY recommended for Winger fans, and necessary for the Winger haters. Grunge had wielded it's grimy sword by the time this band redeemed itself from it's hairspray past. This album stands above all others as an example that the image is nothing, the songs are everything.

1 out of 5 stars Flashy hair metal at its worst.......2006-06-14

I have to believe that the people giving this CD a great review are doing so jokingly. I have to believe that, because otherwise my faith in the ability of people to distinguish good music from utter feces will be totally shattered. Hair metal polluted the airwaves in the late 80's and early, early 90's. Thankfully, the general public becan to grow tired of the stale rock stare heroics of it's participants, and moved on to grunge and alternative rock. There was still good metal in 1993, don't get me wrong... but Winger was NOT putting it out. I read a review of this CD on a different site, and the person there was convinced this was Kip Winger's greatest release. I decided to borrow a copy from a less-descriminating friend and give it a listen to. This CD is one of the worst one's I have ever heard. The music is soooo tired, I can't even imagine the musicians themselves getting excited over this. As far as it being Wingers best, that would not say much even if it was. Truthfully, it sounds the same as all his late 80's releases. If you are still listening to this in 2006, and still defending it, there is something really, really wrong with you.
