5 out of 5 stars Best one so far.......2006-07-13

This is Scarling.'s earliest incarnation and in my opinion their finest release to date. There's just something more raw and volatile to it than displayed in any of their later releases. The band's line-up has changed a few times since this album and it shows in the songs. While only about 40 minutes long, it's a great album, very reminiscent of 90's alternative music. Amazing.

    5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2005-12-17

Wow, this is good. I love this CD. The lyrics, Jessicka's voice, the guitars...it rocks. Each song sounds different for the last. I love it. Black Horse Ridding Star is my favorite. Very remescent of JOJ but a original sound. A must have for any JOJ fan.

    5 out of 5 stars Brillant!!!.......2005-10-23

I love this CD. Such a cool sound. Buy it and you'll thrash it. Anyway I have to go listen to it again.

5 out of 5 stars Music for the Broken-Hearted.......2005-08-30

Being a long time JOJ fan I looked forward to this album and was not dissapointed when I first listened to it. A lot of the songs are sad, angry, or a combination of the two but either way you are still left wowed. Scarling is like the grown-up version of JOJ and the songs are very meaningful. If you are looking for something between the lines of goth, serene, and romantic...this is the album for you!

    5 out of 5 stars decoy.com.......2005-04-28

It was just over a month ago that I was drooling all over Scarling's teaser Ep "Bandaid Covers the Bullet Hole." It was one of the most amazing and freshest sounds I have heard in ages. It was a 3 song prelude to what turned out to be just a slightly longer Ep. The new album is entitled "Sweet Heart Dealer," and it contains 7 songs. Humm...not exactly bursting with material, but I applaud them because there is no filler here. It's still killer shoegazer brilliance and distorted baby doll vocals. The best way I can think to describe these guys is My Bloody Valentine for the Gen-Xrs with a gorgeous female voice.

The guitars are literally swirling and layered thick as thieves. Chris Vrenna's(NIN) handywork is all over this product and it's a job well done. This is really not for everyone, and I'm thankful for that. It's not really catchy, and there's no single for MTV or radio..not one that jumps out anyway. This is for the puriest, it's deep and thoughtful. The first track "The Last Day I Was Happy," sounds like Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson joined hands for musical matrimony. It comes fully equipped with industrial sludgy guitar riffs and the sick prom queen snarl. Alot of this album reminds me of early 90's alternative, and radio I recall with glee! Bands like Veruca Salt, Ruby, Salt, pre-glam Hole...but with that elitist textured guitar and synth that really put it in a league all it's own. They even give an ode the palest man in the universe, Crispin Glover (Back to the Future's dad McFly.) This is fitting seeing how Scarling are some pale suckers themselves (check their website for photos.) My favorite song on the cd is "Black Horse Riding Star." This song brings the pain, it's got the rage and aggression I was waiting for through the first 5 tracks. Jessicka screams so shrill-ly "Black horse riding star, goodbye and damn YOU!!" I don't know maybe it's just me but I miss the days when alternative was cool. I want to hear this stuff on the radio again. While this album is surely better then most of the mid 90's staples, it just shows how the mainstream is a shadow of it's former self. Am I bitter? Do I feel old? Am I nostalgic? Your darn right and a bandaid probably won't fix it, but Scarling sure does help it go down.

    side note:
Those who once worshipped Jessicka's old Band Jack Off Jill will hopefully love her new band scarling. it's certainly tremendously better then the solo effort released by JOJ's other founder Robin Moulder. (tcr is seriously the worst music I've heard to date)

Since America's Volume Dealer sounds a lot like alternative metal, the unfamiliar might think they're bandwagon jumpers. But COC were among the first to explore the myriad connections between metal and punk/hardcore when they opened for thrash acts in the heyday of the '80s metal underground. But since likeminded (albeit more commercial) bands like Soundgarden and Faith No More have come and gone, perhaps COC's day has finally come. In fact, America's Volume Dealer is an incredibly high-quality piece of work that exhibits range, musicianship, and confidence. If they occasionally sound a bit like Alice in Chains, remember this: Corrosion of Conformity helped create that sound. --Genevieve Williams

    3 out of 5 stars What Happened?.......2007-06-10

I think that something happened to COC between Wiseblood (1996) and America's Volume Dealer (2000). I'm not sure what, though. This album isn't terrible. It's still got some good riffs, some good vocals, and generally some good music. Perhaps this just reflects my biased expectations, but to me this album seems too slow, too soft, and too disjointed. There's nothing wrong with being slow and soft, or even disjointed at times. Many people would use those three words for the instrumental interlude bits on "Deliverance," but I actually liked those. On this album, though, there's just way too much of those qualities. There's a big difference between a cool instrumental bit for a minute, and a Load-like 45 minute rock album. I think the album before this (Wiseblood) and after (In the Arms of God) were both better than this one.

    4 out of 5 stars COC Rocks!.......2007-05-04

I have always loved this bands sound. It's sounthern rock with a big pile of Sabbath tossed in for good measure. The sound, the texture, the lyrics, the overall energy of their cd's is simply amazing.

While this release may not be everyones favorite, it's still COC full on and thiers nothing wrong with that.

Pepper gets it and so the fans who follow the man and his work!!

    5 out of 5 stars COC.....America's Volume Dealer...2000...(Sanctuary).......2007-01-26

I remember when this came out in recent Corrosion of Conformity history. I first saw this at Manifest Discs and Tapes in West Ashley, S.C. Which is a huge awesome record store that carries every album by a band and not just the most recent or popular. Anyway that day in October 2000 I happened to look at new releases and was happy to see COC had a new album out. It happened to be four years since Wiseblood had come out in '96 and I had not heard anything about COC in that time period ('96-'00). I also saw that they were no longer on Columbia/Sony and now on Sanctuary Records. Anyway so I bought this album and at first listen was a little surprised about the direction that they had took. America's Volume Dealer is more polished, less aggressive, slower songs, and sort of a sound of maturity....even though that is odd to say since they have been around since '83! Well I must say that I personally like the direction the band went on here. I gave it five stars, because of course its COC and the album itself. Though my favorite album is Blind (have the original copy of Blind's '91 on Relativity & love it!). Deliverance,Wiseblood, and In The Arms Of God are awesome too. Anyway America's Volume Dealer was the last album to feature drummer Reed Mullin. All songs are really good on here. My favorites are Over Me,Congratulations Song,Diablo Blvd.,Who's Got The Fire, and Zippo. The rest are great as well. Pick it up and add this to your Corrosion of Conformity collection.

5 out of 5 stars Another strong rock slab from COC.......2007-01-26

This record is another example of the straight-up and solid riffs, gruff vocals, and heavy groove of COC. A must-buy for anyone who is a fan of Pepper and the gang.

    5 out of 5 stars I must be missing something special . . ........2006-02-19

I've had this album for some time and I really like it. But as I look at the reviews I find that this is one of their lower rated albums. Well, if the rest of their stuff is like this, then C.O.C. must be one of the best rock bands out there.

The vocals are great. There are great guitar riffs and harmonization. This is just a good rock album. Check this one out.

I'll check out some of the other C.O.C. and report to you here.

4 out of 5 stars Introducing Larry Coryell.......2004-02-27

Veteran drummer Chico Hamilton was known for his ability to lead groups, allowing for artistic freedom to develop and improvise but more importantly, to discover new talent. At the time of this original 60's recording, Chico Hamilton had given wings to his recently departed guitarist, Gabor Gzabo, to venture out and lead his own group. He replaced him with a young 23-year old Texan named Larry Coryell and introduced him to the jazz world and the rest his history. Corryell went on to a brilliant solo career , solidified his heavyweight status in the annals of jazz-rock fusion, recorded some thirty odd Lp's(many are on CD) in different styles including the softer and with less edge stepchild of jazz known has smooth jazz. The highlight of this disc is the introduction of Larry Coryell and his brilliant fluid style that is blues based. Notable songs that display Coryell's talents include "For Mods Only"(remember it was the sixties) where Archie Shepp, noted sax man, makes a rare contribution on his composition at the piano. He does not play sax on this disc. Coryell delivers some riveting guitar licks over the Shepp keyboards that bring to mind many of his later works where his improvisational skills are the norm. An additional bonus is the fine sax work by little known nor remembered Arnie Lawrence; his contribution is memorable however on this disc. " A Trip," least I remind you again, it was the sixties, is a beautiful composition by Chico Hamilton that showcases the interplay of sax and guitar playing simultaneously in an incredible, intricate, interwoven fashion , creating a mesmerizing musical quilt. "Baby You know" features Coryell's signature smooth jazz style early on in his career. The heavy blues influenced "Larry of Arabia" was written by Hamilton and given Coryell's nickname. This song is a masterful bit of fret work by Coryell that shows his many influences but most notably, Wes Montgomery; if you close yourr eyes you'd swear it was Wes. The disc in general is very good and a good document or testament to the development of one of the best jazz guitarists that is comfortable in many different styles. The bonus tracks were previosly released, add different elements and give the disc legs since the original Lp is more in the forty minute range that was the norm in those days. The original producer was the extraordinary Bob Theile. If you are adding some old jazz to the digital format than this might be a good choice; you can hardly go wrong with most Impulse rereleases that have Dave Grusin(yep, that one) as Executive Producer.Recommended for jazz purists who know it sounds as good now as then; only now it's cleaner, without pops and digital.

    3 out of 5 stars Solid Effort.......2003-08-27

This album starts off great. The first few songs are unbelievable. I think the album loses a little bit of steam in the middle, but it finishes strong. Larry Coryell adds a lot of great guitar throughout. The sax player is solid throughout as well. Of the 11 tracks on the album I would rate 6 of them as 5 star tracks. I would actually rate this album 3.5 stars if I had the option.

    5 out of 5 stars "A DIFFERENT JOURNEY" ACCOLADES.......2001-03-21

When I picked-up my first LP by this guy (A DIFFERENT JOURNEY, Reprise, 1961) I was about 13 years old (hmmm, I dunno, it was something about the cover artwork that caught my eye); and nearly 40 years later I still listen to that classic LP, and wonder why a CD version hasn't been issued. This album also introduced jazz idiom Charles Lloyd, whom I quickly fell in love with, as well. A couple years later, Gabor Szabo won me over with his eastern style and brief stint with Chico, and I began to scour everything around by the 3 exceptional performers. THE DEALER surfaced and made a lasting impression, and just last month I stumbled across an out-of-print video of Chico and his group at The Village Vanguard (1982) issued by Sony -- it nearly brought tears to my eyes. Whew!! What a nostalgic trip that was!! I really can't begin to comment on any particular CD or tune by Chico, but I certainly can say his styling introduced me to the jazz world, and I should arrange to have A DIFFERENT JOURNEY strategically placed in my casket when I leave this planet!

5 out of 5 stars Solid, foot stompin-bluesy, groovy soul jazz!.......2000-10-24

The sound on this album exemplifies a sort of very mellow soul-jazz that influenced a great number of later 60's psychadelic rock acts, and was influenced by the blues as much as it probably influenced later blues musicians. Chico Hamilton's drumming is so distinct in the fact that he has the PERFECT feel for other musicians and is rare in his "less is more" jazz drumming strategy. Fortunately this recording offers a nice amount of variety within it's jazzy, blues based vocabulary. In a sense, much of music here is like hearing a tripped out, mellow foresight of many guitar/sax/organ combos; the difference is a tad bit more intellectualization and subtley. Richard Davis, on bass, is unique in the fact that he won't just play a walking bassline, or a standard repeated phrase based on chord changes. He'll mess around with it, and put something trippy/avant-garde into his soulful groove. The featured guitarist, Larry Coryell, fits very well into Hamilton's world music vision, as he seems to apply a Texas blues guitar sytle next to a jazz style (like Grant Green/Wes Montgomery) next to some random country lick or indian raga phrase. As read in a recent article...Hendrix dug his style and jammed with him on an occasion. This desciption might make the music seem like a strange jumbled-up concoction, but the variety here is what makes the music so continually rewarding and interesting. The sax player is decent and has a sort of stripped down Parker/Adderley style. Just check out songs like "A Trip" (very appropiately named), "For Mods Only" or a bluesy anthem such as "Larry from Arabia".....this music is kinda soul-jazzy mixed in with a slight bit of avant garde and helluva lot of da Blues...this music is also not such a bad component to those who bobs their heads after slight intoxication or inhalation of a certain sticky green substance... There's also extra material that adds some insight into Hamilton's other recordings...it's pretty obvious Hamilton is no overly intellectual jazz snob, but one who realizes the importance of all types of music.

5 out of 5 stars The Dealer holds all the cards........2000-03-23

If you're familiar with Chico Hamiltons' music, there's not much I can tell you,you don't already know: his captivating sound is (I believe) exemplified on "THE DEALER".If you don't have it, this (earlier) album is a must for those who appreciate this music!

5 out of 5 stars Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

This is a compilation disk of Greatest Hits, as it were, of Henry Purcell recorded by various artists from 1953 (the Alfred Deller track) through the 1970s through 1994. The point of the disk was part of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the much to early death of this great composer and one of the great geniuses of music that England or Britain has ever produced. I have always been a devotee of his music and absolutely adore the way he set English. It is absolutely unique to him and so full of wonderful effects that create a greater whole than the music or words alone.

1995 was a year when we got to revel in everything Purcell. I was able to see a very delightful staging of "The Indian Queene" in London at the Barbican. It had narration, dancing, the singing, and wonderful playing. At the other portion of the concert, I enjoyed a performance of "Come, Ye Sons of Art" and other works by Hogwood et al. I was hoping to hear Kirkby, and she was billed. However, she was ill. Catherine Bott did a fine job as did John Bowman (both on this disk). Another counter-tenor I was so impressed with was Robin Blaze. I haven't heard much of him since, but he was terrific that night.

There are selections from his works for stage such as "King Arthur", "The Fairy Queen", Did and Aneas, and more. The disk also provides a selection of instrumental works, some sacred selections, and all the works are a delight. The track of "Come, Ye Sons of Art" is from 1953 and recorded by Alfred Deller. If you love the movement of historically informed performance, you do owe some debt to Deller. He was an early reviver of the counter-tenor voice and trying to create a style of performance that might be more appropriate and true to the music of earlier times. He helped bring about new interest in madricals, and other early music forms.

That Emma Kirkby sings on the disk is, of course, a delight for me. I have been captivated by her singing since I first heard her live in December 1980. We also get to delight in the singing of soprano Catherine Bott and counter-tenor John Bowman. All are led by the great Christopher Hogwood (except for the Deller track, obviously).

5 out of 5 stars The Best, Hands Down!.......2007-02-09

I heard this CD last year in Scotland. A friend of mine purchased it and we both immediately fell in love with Shooglenifty! Their music is AMAZING!! It's lively enough that a group of high schoolers (my friends and I) can set down our All American Rejects CDs and listen to something a bit more "tasteful." However, it is also down to earth enough for my parents to enjoy. Shooglenifty brilliantly blends traditional celtic (gaelic??) themes with more modern ones. Even after having it for over a year, I can still feel the magic of the first few listens. It remains my favorite CD. Whatever your musical tastes are, unless you are a die-hard heavy metal or rap fan, you are sure to find something to love about this album. I HIGHLY recommend it. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Wild Music That Stays With You.......2006-05-15

By my rough definition a "head tune" is a song or tune that lodges in your brain deeply enough to play its way out several times a day, especially when you are not overly pre-occupied. How many decent "head tunes" can a good CD hold? Two, perhaps three? A week of listening to Shooglenifty's new CD, followed by four days away from it in the Tasmanian highlands, have revealed at least five head tunes on this album. Translation? This is a great album!

To my mind this wonderful Scottish band had drifted somewhat in their last CD or two. Their inventive pairing of almost industrial-strength percussion and Scottish tunes had wandered too far in the direction of weirdness for my liking. Melody and lilt, Scottish music's great strengths, were becoming too hard to find. So what's changed? Let me be parochial enough to suggest that the injection of young Tasmanian mandolin/bouzouki/banjo whizz Luke Plumb into the group has given it a huge melodic lift. He was conscripted for their 2002 Australian tour, and has become a welded on and, it's to be hoped, long-term member of the band.

Right from the first track, the memorable Glenuig Hall, his melodic inventiveness makes its mark. That's not to deny the on-going splendour of fiddler Angus Grant's playing and tune writing - for instance the gentle title track contrasting with the energetic Aye Right!, or his playful Nordal Rumba, with its brassy Latino feel. Also the playing and writing of percussionist James Mackintosh (the edgily exotic A Fistful of Euro), and guitarist Malcolm Crosbie continue to inspire. And Garry Finlayson is still dangerously close to making banjo playing fashionable.

But - and please forgive the pun - the plum tunes so often have Luke Plumb's name associated with them. And none more so than the last two sets. Scraping the Barrel is a set of three tunes that range from menace to mania, all the while keeping within ear-shot of the Scottish melodic tradition. But the gorgeous closing track Tune For Bartley, heads the "head tune" list. Building slowly from a simple guitar/mandolin/banjo start, it adds percussion, bass, fiddle and finally some stunning uilleann pipes from guest Mike McGoldrick. The resulting melody is one of rare bucolic beauty. It helps convince me that this is Shooglenifty's finest album for many years.

    5 out of 5 stars World's finest string band?.......2003-09-25

Shooglenifty, that decade-old Scotish neo-trad Celtic band, has produced their finest release to date--and one of the finest ever string band records, at least to these ears.

    Why?

Primarily because they've figured out how to walk a fine line between faithfulness to their roots (Celtic string band music) and still expand their musical palette in fruitful new directions, successfully avoiding, on the one hand, the Scylla of mindless traditionalism and on the other the Charybdis of inane experimentation. I'm not surprised it's taken 10 years to completely figure this out; many bands never do.

A careful listen to a couple of pivotal numbers--"The Nordal Rumba" and "Maxine's Polka"--amply demonstrates this dexterity. The first, not really a rumba, but definitely exhibiting some kind of Caribbean groove (more Calypso-sounding, I'd say) with its Island percussion, that mesmerizing West-African guitar thing, and punk-Tropic drumming, proves the point with the lead instument being a fiddle, definitely NOT a traditonal Caribbean instrument. Add the Salsa Celtica Horn Section, and you've got an instant classic. "Maxine's Polka" takes a similar strategy--with equally effective results. This time the lead instruments are fiddle and mandolin (doubling the melody, supported by banjo)--also, certainly, not mainstream polka instruments, with a wicked whiplash percussion thing intermixed. Once again, it doesn't really sound that much like a polka--more like a jig with polka-like undertones. But each works marvelously, drawing on the folk-sensibility of rumba and polka, but transposing each into a unique world-folk-jazz setting.

A note on the packaging: the faux Oriental cover painting, as well as the jewel-box booklet collage/band photos, conspire to create the perfect visual complement to the music.

All in all, a stellar effort--ambitious, but not too far out there; rooted in the tradition, but wide open to new influences. This is modern Celtic music at its very finest.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent album..........2003-09-01

Shooglenifty, although not very well known in the U.S., have been generating their own brand traditionally inspired, unabashedly dance-oriented music ("hypnofolkadelic acid croft") for over a decade. The formula is simple: take great tunes (traditional or not) and play them on fiddle, mandolin and banjo backed up with solid guitar, bass and percussion. Modify with jazzy improvisation, some spooky vocals, and blinding speed and the result is dense, energetic dance music that goes straight for the brainstem.
The Arms Dealer's Daughter is their fourth studio album and the first one to feature their revised lineup. A band whose playing is this tight might normally be crippled by loss of the very talented Ian McLeod and Conrad Ivitsky but the Shoogles managed to locate the young, antipodean mandolinist Luke Plumb and the bassist Quee MacArthur to fill their spots. Plumb has no trouble keeping up with the Shoogle sound: his sharp, bubbly mandolin playing meshes so tightly with Angus Grant?s fiddle that the two almost seem to be one instrument at times. He also contributes a number of fantastic tunes to the album, including the gorgeous Tune for Bartley. Overall, this is a fantastic album with much more acoustic feel than their third album(Solar Shears) and a bit more of the live sound that is captured so well on Live at Selwyn Hall (here's hoping for a live album with the new lineup). The Arms Dealer's Daughter has an incredibly wide range of sounds (driven in large part by Plumb's tunes) : from the groovy riffs of Heading West to the very latin Nordal Rhumba. In fact, I find that there are very few tracks on this album that you could peg as "Scottish" but so many great tracks that I enjoy listening too much to notice.

This is with out a doubt COC finest outing to date. 'America's Volume Dealer' is solid gold front to back. All COC's previous CD's have gems on them but the consistency of this CD's is amazing. Full of real songs approached with both strength and subtly in equal measure. I should also point out that the production and mixing are also both daring and visionary. One day all records will sound like this!!! Easily my favorite record of 2001.

After the sludgy, disappointing "Sing Monkey Sing" and an extended hiatus, Raging Slab are back in peak form on "The Dealer." Harkening back to their early independently-released material, the band mixes up a tasty stew of raw blues, southern-fried funk, psychedelia and plain old good-timey bar-band rock that sounds great blasting from your speakers. This is beer-drinking, hell-raising rock n' roll at it's best. Do yourself a favor and pick up on this right away!
