Influenced by New York punk bands like the Ramones and Dictators, as well as by traditional heavy metal ensembles, Twisted Sister created brash, simple songs that buzzed with subversive energy, giving the band the appeal of bad-boy cartoon characters. Their third album, Stay Hungry, featured the classic rebel anthem "We're Not Gonna Take It" as well as more uptempo tracks like "Burn in Hell" and "S.M.F." (which, in true metal fashion, stands for "Sick Motherfucker"). No one disputes Twisted Sister's competence level. Simply put, they couldn't play well enough to save their five-year recording career, but frontman Dee Snider's outrageous stage presence and accidentally hilarious lyrics ensured that their time in the limelight was thoroughly entertaining. --Jon Wiederhorn

Twisted..........2007-07-09
Can't really explain why I'm tinto these guys since I'm primarilly into Hip Hop but I grew up on their videos!
Don't Knock It Until You've Tried It!!!!.......2007-02-15
You know, it's funny. Most of the people I've run into who trash Twisted Sister do so not so much b/c of the music, but the image. I myself was at one time guilty of this. But if you can move beyond the hideous make-up/costumes and the fact that the band only take themselves seriously about half the time, then you'll discover a truly underappreciated classic in Stay Hungry. TS' music is not about complex song structures or virtuoso musicianship. It's just good, clean and straightforward hard rockin fun, and that is something that is sorely missing in today's music. While the image is a mix of shock rock (Alice Cooper) and glam (New York Dolls), the music is more akin to early speed metal and NWOBHM. And while the songs are consistently hard and heavy, you may be suprised by the level of melodic content that exists as well. Dee Snider, for instance, may not be on the level of vocal gods like Dio, Halford, Dickinson, etc. but he is by far a capable singer and his lyrics are even quite intelligent at times. It should also be noted that the vast majority of the material is written by Mr. Snider alone. Anyway, give Stay Hungry a try. Get over your obsession with expecting music (especially metal) to always be serious and technically impressive, and then sit back and enjoy a solid set of classic metal anthems.
Holy Crap! Forgot all about this one!.......2006-10-03
I had this casette way back when. I was a juvenile rocker when it came out, I was young and dumb and embarrassingly goofy. Now I'm almost 40 and listen to a very wide variety of music. I happened to be at a friend's house and saw that he had this CD. I played it and couldn't believe the A+ songs on it. I'd always remembered Twisted Sister as some sort of gimmicky glam band that I'd listened to as a child.
I still think "We're not Gonna Take It" is a bit over the top, but "Burn in Hell" and "I Wanna Rock" are rock solid songs. "Stay Hungry" reminded me of Y&T - and I rate Dave Meniketti as one of the greatest. "The Price" is an achingly ripping ballad. What vocals!
Well, I didn't skip through any of the songs (at the friend's house) and I bought the CD from Amazon 2 days later. This one only got better with age.
My very first album.......2006-09-24
This was my very first album I got when I was like 5 years old as a kid in the 80s. Whether it's their hilarously chessey music videos or their gruesome appearance, I still kept a morbid curiosity interest in Twisted Sister to this day and last night saw Dee Snider sing on TV. Dee Snider is a big celebrity and actually I think he has pretty decent taste, if only their videos didn't date so bad. This contains a number of classic tracks like the itle track, We're Not Gonna Take It, Burn in Hell, The Beast and S.M.F. While the band may be unintentionally funny, the music works not only as a nostalgia trip but for Dee Snider's celebrity come back, coming off as bad bone Christian metal without being corny about it like Stryper. Yes, Dee Snider testified at the PMRC hearing that he's a Christian believe or not, and I've been attending church regularly lately so know for a fact that that is true. Take it with some self depricating humor because Dee Snider made a comeback in the late 90s and is still a big star.
Stay Hungry (1984).......2006-09-01
While many people know Twisted Sister best, for "We're Got Gonna Take it" and "I Wanna Rock", they had more to offer than just those two songs. Stay Hungry is a very solid metal album. This is one of those albums that demands to be played loud. From the opener "Stay Hungry" through "S.M.F." the album never gets dull. Besides the obivious hits other highlights include the title track, The Price, Horror Teria, Don't Let Me Down, but the album as a whole is very enjoyable. It's to bad that they couldn't maintain their popularity after Stay Hungry, cause Twisted Sister was actually a pretty good band. This album deserves a spot in any reall rock n roll collection.

Not for children.......2007-04-22
This was produced by Hal Willner at A&M in 1989 when Willner was 31. Willner has also produced albums for Marianne Faithfull, Lou Reed, Bill Frisell, William S. Burroughs, Gavin Friday, Lucinda Williams and Allen Ginsberg, among others. So it should be no surprise that this album is an eclectic mix and highly theatrical in concept. Several reviewers have criticized the use of medleys, but a great many Disney songs have only one verse and a chorus, which makes it difficult to make a full length cut, hence the medleys. It's an album that has aged very well and bears many repeat listenings. Tom Waits, Harry Nilsson,Suzanne Vega, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, Betty Carter,Sinead O'Connor, James Taylor, Yma Sumac, and narration by Ken Nordine. It sounds as though it should be a real mess, but Willner has put it together so it not only makes sense but is more than the sum of its parts.
Not hte best cd to buy.......2007-04-02
I have bought several Disney cd's like this one and this is my least favorite. Some of the arrangements I feel could scare a young child, like Hey Diddley Dee. The one that I do enjoy is the title song...It is very much the mother's lullaby being sung acapello.
Disney a wee bit on acid........2006-06-09
What an eclectic grouping of artists that came together to make this work. The absolute best Disney tribute CD that adults will probably enjoy more than the children. Sinead deliberatly sings an entire song off key until the last note and it's perfect. There are wonderfull songs that you would expect, but with Tom Waits in the mix you must expect some "oddness". Overall a great CD. 5 Stars easy.
Alternating dark , melancholy and wistful, good but for grown-ups only.......2006-05-16
I found that listening to this work end to end is going to put you in some peculiar moods. The overall feeling is definitely downbeat, even the up-tempo songs have a decidedly ironic and dark bent. My favorite song in this album has to be the exceptionally soulful rendering of "Baby Mine" by Bonnie Raitt; it turns the sentimental mother-child ballad into something more on the romantic side. I have often slow-danced this one with the wife, and you can really feel a hot intensity under the surface of this number. James Taylor's "Second Star To The Right" is exceptionally wistful in his trademark style. Sun Ra's cover of "Pink Elephants" remains true to the original while retaining the peculiar spacy Sun-Ra vibe. One of the more "accessible" Sun-Ra performances I've ever heard.
Tom Waits and Ken Nordine are commanding presences as well. The Tom Waits version of "Hi-Ho" made my wife's imagination conjure nightmare images of murderous doings in Gacy's basement; it creeps her out so badly, she refuses to hear one note of it. I prefer to imagine the dwarves in manic, Fred C. Dobbs-like pursuit of their underground treasure, working too fast in a mine full of hazards and fearsome environments... with a workplace like that, it's no wonder they'd really appreciate a Snow White coming into their lives. Perfect music if you are on your way to a job you hate...
I agree the Sinead O'Connor piece (Someday My Prince Will Come) and Suzanne Vega "Stay Awake" tracks are here mostly for their postmodern ironic effect, and I find them hard to listen to with patience. In Sinead's case, the shock value of her performance of this particular song choice gets dulled over time as people forget who she is and why her singing this is supposed to be funny.
The Nordine pieces, which bookend the album, really demand good headphones for best appreciation, and reward repeated listening. Cruising thru quotes of ee cummings, with puzzling snatches of what seems to be an audio montage of soundtrack clips from old Disney park attractions, and other spooky imagery, he conjures up a tour thru a darkened, haunted vault of musty film cans and ragged posters, the perfect place for an adult to look back on childhood perceptions and potentials and compare his youthful fantasies with the cold realities and incomplete goals and disappointments of old age. Pretty heavy stuff. Yet it manages to finish, if not upbeat, still, with a sense that we still have time left to wring meaning from our pasts, and to put ourselves on a path to personal redemption.
The whole album leaves me with this kind of feeling, as if I have passed unscathed thru something more dark and dangerous than I really understood, and survived to come out into sunlight on the other side. Like the old "dark ride" rollercoaster attractions of Disney's park, you will want to experience the ordeal of getting scared and surviving it again and again.
Really good stuff.......2006-04-28
I picked this up on CD when it was first released and I was in college, it was always one of my dirty pleasures packed next to harder, grungier, and/or funkier stuff. Well, most of the other stuff has not stood the test of time too well, but Stay Awake still comes out every once in a while. Like the earlier reviewer, I frequently sing my daughters to sleep with Blue Shadows on the Trail ala Syd Straw, and my 2 year old has taken to singing along with me. My one complaint is the medley style of the tracks... some tunes rate an individual track, while other tracks might have three or four tunes faded together. Plenty of different styles on here to satisfy a wide variety of tastes, but it's the purer and more sentimental ones that have always stuck with me. I strongly disagree with the reviewer who thinks Aaron Neville was trying to sex up the Mickey Mouse Club march, I've always felt that his version is laced more with plaintive nostalgia than anything prurient. I've always wished that somebody would put together a Stay Awake 2, but if that means Jessica Simpson gets called in to remake Hakuna Matata, I'll pass.

Sandy Stewart - great singer you never heard of!.......2007-07-03
excellent CD.. Sandy takes me back to those smoky night club singers..
what a treat.. she sings with such heart and pain and fun.. she is so sincere.. and son Bill Charlap.... a master at the piano..
what a dynamic duo! so glad i heard the interview on NPR.. I knew I had to own this CD.. I am wearing it out..
Quality performances but constantly mellow.......2006-08-20
Although Bill Charlap and Sandy Stewart are consummate performers, I must agree with the review of Sharlan Douglas. Both mother and son compliment their artistry so skillfully but the tempo of each selection is ultimately and regretfully the same throughtout the entire album. Neither the superbly intimate phrasing of Sandy Stewart nor the tenderly responsive accompaniment of Bill Charlap sustained the interest of this listener. However, when my choice is limited to a few numbers, the combined talents of both vocalist and pianist are intoxicating as one's stimulating indulgence of a fine and delicate wine.
Ultimately boring.......2006-01-14
I like Sandy Stewart's voice and phrasing -- she tells a good song story. Son Bill Charlap's accompaniment is delicate and spare. But every song has the same, slow tempo, the same vocal level and the same accompaniment. There's nothing uptempo, no crescendos, no drama.
Copy Control, what a sound spoiler!.......2006-01-08
If it wasn't for the sound quality damaged by the copy control ("CC"), this would have been a truly wonderful recording of Bill Charlap accompanying his own mother, who gets really into singing love songs in front of her own beloved son.
Bill's recordings on Blue Note ("BN") label have been disappointing as compared to his much superior works with Venus Records in Japan, and this CD was going to be an exception. Well, almost. It's strange why his performances fluctuate between the two labels, even though he always record in his home town NYC.
The CC technology masks the transparency and spoils the listening pleasure, especially when listened on a higher-end audio system. I wish BN not only abandons the CC but also issue their latest recordings in CD/SACD hybrid format, provided that BN would never repeat what they did for Nora Jones' Come Away With Me SACD.

Finally, "Here to Stay".......2006-09-12
I've reviewed many of Freddie Hubbard's Blue Note RVG CDs here on Amazon, and in most of them I mentioned how "Here to Stay" was a better candidate for reissue than a particular title. Well the powers that be at EMI must have been reading my comments because "Here to Stay" is available once again after being out-of-print for nearly twenty years! While I still believe "Ready for Freddie" is the trumpeter's best BN disc (see my review), "Here to Stay" is not far behind. In fact, this album is the most Jazz Messenger like of his Blue Notes, which is only natural since it was recorded in the middle of Freddie's famous stint with Blakey, and made with three of his JM mates -- Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton and Reggie Workman. In fairness, Philly Joe Jones does provide his own unique rhythmic support -- he's never out in front like Art is -- but that only accounts for a slight difference in the overall sound. This December 27, 1962 session features two standards, two Hubbard originals, and two wonderful tunes by the under-appreciated trumpeter Cal Massey, last seen contributing two original compositions on Lee Morgan's "Leeway" (see my review). In all, jazz fans will be delighted that this Freddie Hubbard album is finally "Here to Stay."

dated in a good way.......2006-07-18
"Let's Stay Together" plays funk infused jazz. This album is hopelessly lost in the 1970's -and that's part of what's so great about "Let's Stay Together." The crowning tribute here to bell bottoms, pet rocks and platform shoes is the 'Theme From Shaft.' Other recognizable covers include 'What's Going On' and 'Georgia On My Mind.' Jimmy's Hammond B-3 spews out chunks of funk, while the bass plays fat grooves and a greasy brass section punctuates just the right moments. An occasional guitar solo provides some elegance. In terms of significance, this music is now the roots of acid jazz. "Let's Stay Together" isn't a timeless classic, it's an unapologetically dated gem.

Raven - 'Stay Hard' (Mayhem).......2005-04-11
Originally released in 1985 as this was the hard rockin' trio's fifth effort.Although 'Stay Hard' probably isn't the best offering by Raven,it's still worth having.Decent heavy metal, however when you see the band play live, they seem a bit cartoonish. So,I've heard.Tracks here that I found myself turning the stereo to 'ten' were the title cut "Stay Hard","Get It Right","Pray For The Sun","Extract The Action" and "The Bottom Line".Line-up:John Gallagher-bass&vocals,Mark Gallagher-guitar and Wacko-drums.The CD reissue adds two good bonus tracks.Should appeal to most fans of W.A.S.P.,Overkill,Y&T,Guns N'Roses and Loudness.
higgy-michigan.......2000-03-27
STAYHARD is the heaviest! Z_rock in 1986 introduced me to them, very high energy metal with that tenacious irish bite! worth every penny!
Good !.......1999-02-13
A very good record, with good drums, bass and guitar. The songs are not wonderful, but is much better than "The Pack is Back".
It took a few listens, but Stay Hard is an excellent metal.......1998-12-17
barrage from 1985. Raven is/was a power trio that delivered mostly over-the-top heavy rock 'n roll with a glut of hooks. Believe it or not, Stay Hard is one of their more subdued records. For a true Raven attack, you gave got to get your hands on Live at the Inferno- it's an earth shattering live experience. But what we have at hand is very good indeed. Stay Hard is mostly mid-paced, riff heavy, and drum intensive. The vocals were hard to get used to in the beginning particularly because they are harsh. John Gallagher, who also plays bass, uses his vocal cords to their absolute fullest, belting out any and every kind of growl, snarl, and yelp he can. His style is not really unique as far as 80's metal bands go, but he definitely knows how to do this type of screaming better than most metal frontmen. Most songs here reflect classic metal riffery- "Hard Ride", "On & On", "When the Going Gets Tough." Nothing too progressive, just straight forward good hard rockin'. The main riff from "Restless Child" borrows (rips off?) the riff from Rainbow's "Starstruck." I can even hear a similarity to Saxon's "Dallas 1PM" in the Raven tune "Power and Glory." Oh well, let it pass, for the tracks really do rock. The solos on this record cook. As an added bonus, there are 2 extra tracks from Raven's "Mad" EP. "Gimme Just a Little" and "Do or Die" are really the highlights of an already fierce album. I find that Stay Hard is excellent cruising material. The band gives 100% on every track, something you don't normally hear from an established rock unit. -David Newman 1998

Bigwig is incredible! They are true punk. Favorite tracks are Still, Dent, Smile, Falling Down, and Sellout. All the songs rock though. If you are fans of dogwood, ghoti hook, toxic narcotic, and the ataris, you should like these guys. Also check out Toxic Narcotic, Lost Cause, and The Vandals as well. Pure punk mayhem. Customer Reviews:
Another original album from Ralph Peterson's Fo'tet.......2000-01-26
Ralph Peterson has been recording with the group he calls the Fo'tet, with a couple of personnel changes, for about ten years now. The present lineup includes Peterson on drums, Ralph Bowen on soprano sax (he replaces Steve Wilson, who succeeded clarinetist Don Byron), Belden Bullock - Bass (who replaced original bassist Mellisa Slocum), and Bryan Carrott on vibes and marimba. This is the fifth Fo'tet recording and continues the concept established by the first four. The group primarily comes out of the post bop tradition, but pushes the envelope to create an original sound that is an extension of that tradition. Peterson can play anything on the drums. Although he rarely takes extended drum solos, his presence is felt throughout. Even on the slower tempo songs, he is constantly pushing the soloists and interacting with the other members of the group. He does not always play what is expected, and that is what helps to give a very identifiable sound, something which is somewhat difficult from the drums. This is Bowen's first recording with the group and he makes a solid contribution. Because most of the songs are relatively short, the chance of overlong solos which don't say anything is reduced. Carrott, who because he does not have any recordings under his own name is relatively unknown, is a very original vibist. In the liner notes, Peterson describes him as coming from the African baliphone tradition. This comes through in his playing especially on the marimba. Michael Brecker guests on two songs, and his presence helps to bring out a little something extra in the members of the group. Overall this is a very enjoyable recording. The compositions, composed by the members of the group with a couple of standards thrown in, suit the group well and offer a good enough variety of mood and tempo to keep you interested. The [rating] system does not allow it, but I would rate this album at least 3 1/2 stars, and on continued listening it will probably increase to four. Recommended.
