5 out of 5 stars The seed of memory.......2007-07-17

I courted my wife to the music of this LP the better part of thirty years ago. It was, and is still one of finest collections of ballads and truth's recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Where was I when this came out?.......2007-05-13

I bought this cd because I heard 3 of the songs in Rob Zombies horror movie "The Devil's Rejects." Excellent movie. Now I grew up in the 70's, and I never heard of Terry Reid. But the songs in the movie were pretty good, good enough that they really caught my attension in a horror film. I looked this guy up on amazon, and discovered that the 3 songs I was looking for were on this one record. I ordered it.
I still don't know what to say. I thought, I'd heard just about everything. I'm a musician, and a music history buff. Where was Terry? This album is FANTASTIC! Sorrowful, jazzy, country like blues influenced, with one or two rock songs thrown in for measure. It is one of the most unique and beautiful albums I've ever heard.
It is truly an honestly wrought piece of work about what it was like in the mid seventies.
You know...I'd pay 100.00$ for this record and it would still be worth every penny. An album like this you'll own it forever. I'd like to thank Terry for putting this on the earth for us. He did more than he will ever know. A standing ovation. 5 super stars!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect album!.......2007-01-02

This cd is his shortest cd, but his best one by far. The songs on this album were simply amazing. If you like crosby, stills, nash, and young, you will adore this cd! This album has a very chill mood to it that makes it an instant favorite. Every song on here is a classic. Terry Reid has a mildly raspy, amazing voice. I think Terry Reid is one of the best singers and song writers out there. His singing is powerful yet suttle. And you will highly enjoy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Terry Reid:The best kept secret in Rock !.......2006-07-16

Seed of Memory by Terry Reid is a delightful collection of tunes... Think "California nites with a bottle of wine & trusted company"... The entire cd is solid, with standouts being the title track- Seed of Memory,Brave Awakening, and by far the finest track- To Be Treated Rite ! Terry's voice, along with producer Graham Nash adding vocals, David Lindley playing slide and an uncredited appearance by Joni Mitchell in certain spots- make this perhaps one of the finest records to come out of the 70's- BUY it proudly and Pass on the Knowledge !!!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2005-08-21

I've only recently become aware of Terry Reid. I was watching "The Devil's Rejects" and really liked the songs on the soundtrack, not knowing that Rob Zombie used 3 Terry Reid songs. I picked up the soundtrack and after listening to it ad nauseum for weeks,I decided to try to find some Terry Reid stuff. Boy am I glad I did! "Seed of Memory" has not left my CD player since I got it. EVERY SONG IS GOOD. There is not one song on this CD that I skip over. I play it over and over and over again obsessively. I just wish I was around when his music came out initially. I'm 29 and "Seed of Memory" was released the same year I was born (1976....a GREAT year!LOL!). Why can't today's music sound as cool as this?

Less than six weeks after the attack on the World Trade Center, pop, rock, and R&B luminaries gathered at Madison Square Garden to pay tribute to the firefighters, police officers, and rescue workers who stepped to the fore following the catastrophe. The benefit, captured on this two-disc set, consequently has an immediacy and urgency rare among star-studded extravaganzas; the ruins of the twin towers, as well as the passions of the performers and audience, were still smoldering. With Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and David Bowie digging deep into their oeuvres to resurrect songs appropriate for the occasion (the likes of "Let It Be," "Salt of the Earth," and "Heroes" are truly stirring), and the Who delivering a stunningly urgent three-song set, rock's senior statesmen lead the way. Contributions from Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Destiny's Child, and others flesh out a collection that is never less than inspirational and is frequently inspired. --Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars 9/11 Got Me Down, The Concert for NYC Made Me Up.......2005-11-01

September 11, 2001 was a devastating day for the US. But thanks to Paul McCartney, we were soon lifted up. The Concert for New York City gathered 9/11 victims, fand and an all-star musical line-up to raise money for the victims. Among those performing were Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, The Who, David Bowie, Elton John and James Taylor. These artists played very good sets, but it should have stopped there. Jay-Z should not have been invited, nor should Eric Clapton have. It is these mediocre performances that bring down my rating. But on the whole this is a very good and very helpful concert. And the proceeds go to help the victims. So it is a worthy buy.

4 out of 5 stars "Too Cool".......2002-09-27

This one is a keeper with songs like, America by David Bowie, Livin' On A Prayer by Bon Jovi, Izzo (H.O.V.A.) by Zayz, Miami 2017 by Billy Joel, Who Are You by The Who, and Freedom (reprise) by Paul McCartney. This one doesn't seem to leave anyone out.

3 out of 5 stars Could've Been Great, Upflifting, and Amusing.......2002-09-16

This set of songs performed by various musicians in support of some of the heroes of the 9-11 terrorist attacks falls a tad short of being terrific.

First the good: Paul McCartney's set was unbelievably patriotic, emotional, and energy-charged. The version of "Let It Be" with Eric Clapton on guitar was definitely the musical highlight of the night (the real highlight was Hilly Clinton getting overwhelmingly and deservedly booed followed closely by the booing of Ricky Gere). The sets by the Who and Bon Jovi were also highlights as was the duo version of "Your Song" by Elton John and Billy Joel (curiously and annoyingly left off this cd release).

And that brings me to the primary complaint (and the reason for the three star rating): Too much good stuff left off and too much horrible stuff kept. Example: The booing of Hilly and Ricky. Should have been left on. The John/Joel duo. Should've been left on. The "performances" by the following "artists" should've been left off: Jay-Z, Destiny's LooooveChild, Adam Sandler, and the Backdoor Boys. Basically, disc one could be skipped altogether and replaced with the repeated booings of Hilly and Gerbil.

Overall, disc two is an emotional keeper and almost makes up for the horrible stuff on disc one. My advice: Buy the set and use disc one as a coaster, frisbee, or smash it up and mail it to someone special.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic........2002-09-09

This concert was truly amazing.. The All-Star lineup of bands {minus Jay-Z and the Backstreet Boys..That was terrible} and actors was fantastic. Probably one of my favorite CDs. I recommend this CD to absolutely everyone..

5 out of 5 stars Why was the Hillary Clinton booing censored?.......2002-03-30

What a shame that VH1 saw fit to digitally remove the loud and lengthy booing Hillary Clinton received from the firemen and policemen. She is not one of us and never will be. She vilified NYC cops throughout her campaign and is universally despised by them. This lie will forever taint my recollections of an otherwise awesome concert.

4 out of 5 stars Nice compilation.......2007-05-07

It was good to recover the feeling of these powerful love ballads. Not all of them elicit the same feeling in me, but, hey... this is music. In my view, the first two songs already justify the purchase. You can take the rest as "bonus" features. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Oh. My. God........2005-07-13

How could I forget these songs? This, along with both Monster Ballads albums, are all you need to rock with your lover, Hair Band-style.

I couldn't even remember some of these by their titles. But when I heard *that refrain* at 1:18 on Tesla's Love Song, I nearly cried.

Every song took me back. I was about 13 when most of these (along with the selections from the aforementioned albums) were hits. I went to see Skid Row and Warrant and Trickster in concert. Of course I also loved Bon Jovi, Poison, Guns n Roses, etc. Loved this era!

A must have if you're a fan of the genre!

5 out of 5 stars Can't Fight This Feeling (and Don't Want To).......2005-07-13

One of the best compilations of power ballads on the market, "Feel Like Makin' Love" runs the gamut of emotions, from a longing for love, to loving so hard it hurts, to lost love and heartache. You'll experience the raw emotions each song has to offer as these musicians put their feelings on display for everyone to see.

This CD may help you to relive a long lost love, put an exclamation point on what you might be feeling now in a current relationship, help you visualize the dreams of your heart and soul, or emphasize the ache and emptiness of a broken heart.

Even hard rockers have a romantic side, and this CD exhibits their rough-but-gentle, heart-felt souls. Bad Company "Feels Like Makin' Love," The Scorpions try to rekindle a betrayed heart in "Still Loving You," Foreigner wants to know what love is, REO Speedwagon "can't fight this feeling anymore," Boston's Tom Shulz can't wait to tell "Amanda" how he feels, Cheap Trick remembers a lost love, Winger is "headed for a heartbreak," and Bad English says that everything's all right "when I see you smile."

These songs will have you smiling, sighing, wishing or crying, depending on your mood when you listen to them. If you're ready for a flood of raw, unbridled emotions, then you'll want this CD, and its companion, "Love Bites."

But beware: once you listen to this CD, you'll never be the same again.

5 out of 5 stars The Lost Ballads of Rock, Now Found.......2002-12-21

Wow, I am throughly amazed that I finally found the music I've been looking for for years. This had the best of cheap trick, Whitesnake, and old song of Ratt, and many others. You cannot find most of these songs, musicians in stores anymore. It is very few and far between when you can find 1 tape of the group let alone get everyone you want to hear on 1 tape. I think I have fallen in love with Amazon.com. Thanks for helping me find my music Again.

5 out of 5 stars romantic feeling revisited.......2001-10-11

for any fan who has a romantic soul, the songs on this cd will bring out all the feelings you have been through. from falling in love to losing a love, this cd has it all. i recommend this cd for the different artists and the soul of the music. LOVE LIVE ON!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2006-06-12

This is a good album! One of the song is just stupid, Kep Me Coming, what the hell dose that mean? That is one of the stupidest songs I have ever heard! But the rest of the songs are really good.

5 out of 5 stars Strong, strong, 80's band.......2005-07-05

I can't understand some of the reviews calling this cd mediocre. I can only assume that they gave it one listen, realized they hadn't purchased whatever it was they were hoping to find and took out their misguided anger in text review. This IS a very strong collection of songs IF you love 80's top 40 rock. "When I'm With You" is the big hit ballad but this cd goes so much deeper. This is a rock album that happens to have a ballad...which was the case with many top 40 rock bands from the 80's. "Elisa", "Living For A Dream", and "Makin' My Way" are excellent songs in a sorta Styx meets April Wine kind of way. Those three songs alone are worth the price of admission...but this cd literally doesn't have a bad track. I like to listen to cds when I'm doing wood work in my basement and at first, this cd just sounded okay. It was after several more listenings that I fully realized what a great album this is. I feel like I've unearthed a lost treasure.

5 out of 5 stars AOR classic that few people heard..........2004-04-05

I remember listening to 94 Rock out of Syracuse,NY in the early 80's when "You Remind Me" came on the radio. I loved the sound of the song but only heard it a few times after and never caught the name of the group. I was lucky enough in the late 80's to pick up a cassette(by chance) by a Canadian group called Sheriff. I wondered if "You Remind Me" was the same song I had heard and loved so I purchased it. It was and what a great find. Classic AOR throughout this release with the killer ballad "When I'm With You" also here. I now have this classic on cd and would highly recommend it to 80's AOR fans out there. Great news: 707 Megaforce will be released on cd for the first time this year!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE if you like 80s AOR!!!!.......2002-04-02

This is one of the most delightful "lost treasures" I have ever seen - folks, this is one great record. The songs are excellent (I don't really like the last song, because the keyboardist sings it and I'm not that impressed with his voice, so...) and the production is really good.

This disc is worth far more than the price of admission just to hear Freddy Curci's singing. He is the most incredible vocalist I've ever heard, and I've pretty much heard them all (I'm a singer). His upper range is phenomenal, his tone is excellent, and I've never heard anyone else EVER come close to holding out really high notes for as long as he can. He doesn't really do it for "show," the things he does are quite musical in the context of the songs. NO ONE else that I've ever heard could've done what he did on this album (not Steve Perry, not Brad Delp, nobody), which is from 1982, no less. The standout vocal performance is "Living for a Dream," in which Curci sings several lines that range between the soprano A and C range (that's right, he hits a few notes in there that are a _whole octave_ above the "tenor high C" that you hear about so often - and he _sings_ them, he doesn't scream them).

Although the band did get some recognition later on for "When I'm With You" (and deservedly so, it's a great song), this band never really "made it" - this is the only recording that was released. I've read that interal conflicts over song writing, song choices, and, believe it or not, singing (I've read that the keyboardist wanted to sing more - he's a decent singer, but compared to Curci's incredible vocal prowess, he should just play the keys) led to the break up of the band. Freddy and Steve D. (guitar) went on to join with Steve Fossen, Roger Fisher, and Michael DeRosier of Heart to form the band Alias, which also released a killer AOR album (you may remember the song "More Than Words Can Say").

You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars I'm reviewing the LP, not the CD........2005-03-07

This is a phenomenal collection of great artists recorded live in 1978. I just got my hands on the LP. If you can find the CD, go for it. The following is the list of artists and their songs:

1) Santana - "Jugando" and "Dance Sister Dance."
2) Dave Mason - "Let it Go Let it Flow" and "We Just Disagree."
3) Heart - "Love Alive" and "Little Queen."
4) Ted Nugent - "Free For All" and "Snakeskin Cowboys."
5) Aerosmith - "Same Old Song and Dance," "Draw the Line," and "Chip Away at the Stone."
6) Jean Michel Jarre - "Oxygen (part5)."
7) Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush - "I'm a King Bee" and "Johnny B. Goode."
8) Rubicon - "Never Gonna Leave" and "Too Hot to Handle."

It appears that neither the CD nor LP are still in print; that's unfortunate. If you're a collector of music, this recording is a must have. The Aerosmith set is spectacular. Remember, this is 1978, live in California. There's something unique about Heart's performance that is worth the price of admission, alone. Nugent is a mad man, as one would expect. I have no idea who Marino & Mahogany Rush are, but they can jam.

There isn't a weak moment in this entire collection. It's a variety of musicians just doing their thing for an energetic crowd.

It was the best twenty-five dollars I've spent in recent years.

5 out of 5 stars perfect for me.......2007-03-24

this single must have been released especially for me since it contains the only two songs that i like from this otherwise untalented, noisy band.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I had the words.......2006-02-17

The first time this song filtered into my consciousness, I was in a Taxi in London. Because of the situation - the taxi driver was a bit impatient, conversation was rather stilted and he decided to switch the radio on - I am not likely to forget the time and place when I took notice of this song.

If I could term a song as being perfect - this would be the one. How does one describe it...haunting, sublime, and breathtaking?

Even so I do not have the words or vocabulary to describe it in a way that would do it justice. The song has to be felt and then it makes a connection to the soul.

The simplicity of just one accompanying guitar leaves the song uncluttered and so the listener is able to focus on the lyrics and the voices.

When I listened to it on the radio, I had thought that the music consisted of the guitar accompanied by hand drums. Having recently watched the video - and again quite by accident - I realise that the only instrument was a guitar. The style is an unusual - the guitarist taps on the guitar with perfect timing almost as if it is a drum and does this whilst strumming on the guitar.

It could have something to do with his Portuguese heritage or possibly because he is a drummer that he uses this style. Nevertheless, it is faultless and fits the lyrics and the singing to perfection.

The voices are beautifully harmonious and able to deliver all the emotion and the longing that the lyrics should convey.

It is difficult to describe the genre - it is not pop music, it stands on its own as being the central point at which soul joins country music. I know it sounds a bit odd to even suggest that these two styles could ever marry. The only other artist who has a song close to this in terms of the delivery and sound is Tony Rich with `Nobody Knows' - it is only an opinion, it does not mean that I am right.

My idea of hell would be for someone to do a remake of this song. Some songs are made to be left alone; a remake of songs by certain artists is a sacrilege and that would be the case if an artist tried a remake of this song.

Some hellish remakes include `Tragedy' by Steps and `Lady Marmalade' by All Saints (both British Bands). Somebody should have said `No, no, no...!. To these groups it should have been said - 'You have neither the capacity for delivery, the voice to hold the audience captive, or that certain something make that song!!!!'

Horror of horrors: can anyone imagine Mariah Carey doing a remake of 'More than Words'?

She would probably have a dress cut so low and leave her bosom unfettered such that the M11 could pass through the middle of her chest. And since Mariah has not got the ability to sing a song in a simple fashion, she is likely to pepper it with so many vocal gymnastics. The one that still tickles me pink is that she artfully points her finger upwards just to let her audience know that she wants to take the falsetto even higher. It would be an awful experience to hear her remake this song.

These songs are not common; they come along like little gems every few years or so, please buy the single, press the repeat button, sit down and savour the music.

3 out of 5 stars What about the words?.......2004-10-18

Dave Matthews was asked once about his distinctive singing style, and he said that the sad fact was that people didn't listen to the lyrics of a song. They just didn't he said, so it behooved artists to make the presentation of the lyrics as interesting as possible, because no one was going to listen to it. I am sad to admit that, as cynicle as that sounds, I think Dave was right.

Take this song. This is a song that I only heard in fragments. Friends of mine would play it. Rock compilation comercials would play a snippet. Great Love Songs. Heavy Metal Ballads. Stuff like that. And it always sounded great, the singing, the harmony, the simple guitar, pretty much what people here have been raving about it. And judging from the little bit I heard, I imagined the gist of the lyrics to be something like, "I love you more than words can say." Nice sentiment, huh?

Finally, I decided to learn how to play the song on the guitar, which forced me to learn the music AND the words. Boy! Was I in for a surprise. Here's the first verse into the refrain.

Saying, "I love you."
Is not the words I want to hear from you.
It's not that I want you
Not to say. But if you only knew
How easy, it would be to should me how you feel!

More than words
Is all you have to do to make it real.
Then you wouldn't have to say
That you love me
'Cause I'd already know.

It's a booty song! It's "A Little Less Conversation, A Little More Action." It's "Let's Get It On." The whole point of the song is, "Don't tell me you love me ... show me!" And yes, it's pretty. Yes, it's haunting. Yes, it's produced well and goes down so easy. But in essence, the song is some guy trying to sweet talk you out of your pants.

So when I hear people talk about this song as their favorite love song, I'm led to think about Sting talking about "Every Breath You Take". Sting wrote that song thinking about _1984_ and the type or totalitarian oppresive surveilance that Orwell. At the same time, he gets people saying this is their favorite love song. Sad, in a way.

1 out of 5 stars The song that killed rock...........2004-06-14

At the moment Extreme sat on stools and strummed the opening bars to this drivel for all the sentimental fools that were gullable enough to but this, they put the final nail into the rock scene coffin. Sure, other bands played ballads, but MTW was the final straw. How could good time, long haired, fun rock n' roll ever be able to show it's face in public after this drivel? We were having a tough enough time with Seattle Grunge making us all miserable and wanting to shoot ourselves, but once this went mainstream we had had it. If you had long hair and tatoos people equated you with Extreme and More Than Words. Extreme had such promise and their first two albums showed that there was life after Van Halen, but then they got greedy and ruined it. If Gary Cherone claimed to have meant even one of those words, he is a liar. He was a great performer and one of the best front men of the era, but he sold us all out and for that reason I will never forgive him

5 out of 5 stars This song is so much more than words.......2003-01-20

This has to be one of the most romantic songs ever written. The voices are beyond beautiful. The lyrics are touching. A must own cd.

4 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2007-07-31

For all intents and purposes, Extreme was a one-hit wonder. The band got a lot of attention in a short period of time for their beautiful acoustic ballad "More than Words", and then largely disappeared from most people's radar. This despite the fact that Extreme was an extremely talented band with a real gift for writing catchy (but relevant) rock music.

They were also somewhat inconsistent, however. Once you get past their excellent debut album, the rest of the band's output is a bit uneven. It seems like for every standout song, there are 1-2 tracks that can only be described as filler. I hate to sound like I'm knocking the band. When they got it right, they were fantastic, but I can't be the only one to snooze through large chunks of III Sides to Every Story or Waiting for the Punchline.

That's where a collection like this one comes in handy. You get the absolute best songs the band had to offer (though a couple more songs from the debut would have been nice), all with digitally remastered sound, all for about half the cost of the average CD. Hearing all of these fantastic songs in one sitting is the perfect way to look back at this great band, and the song selection is sure to keep you from even considering the fast forward button.

While it could have benefited from a few more tracks, the Best of Extreme - 20th Century Masters CD is a great overview of a too often overlooked band, and is hard to beat in terms of both sound quality and price.

4 out of 5 stars extreme - underhyped!.......2004-06-03

What can you say about Extreme? didn't they do it all in those four fantastic albums? They swept the musical boundaries the 90's tried to enforced upon eveyone and blasted there way through a sonic explosion of eclectic genres to produce some of the most overlooked songs ever written. This album focuses on the most mainstream side of Extreme which is still better than alot of what is still out there today. If you want to discover the band for real though and in particular the mastermind that is Nuno Bettencourt check out any of there albums.

1 out of 5 stars what's the point?.......2004-03-08

This album is pointless. Get the greatest hits. It has more songs and the track selection is more representitve of their career.

5 out of 5 stars A little disappointing, five stars for the amazing songs!.......2002-05-27

A one star for the remastering job done for these ten great Extreme classic songs. A few of the songs suffer from poor treble and bass levels, and at times way to high bass levels. "Get The Funk Out" has been very poorly remastered, there is way to much bass and it sounds awful. On "Decadence Dance" at the start, there is a thunderstorm in the mix and the mother says, "francis, francis be careful" there seems to be an audio dropout for about a half a second. "Rest In Peace" sounds overly remastered, and the treble levels are off. Most people will likely not notice anything. Actually, all the other songs on this release sound fine and accurate. Besides buying this for nostalgia purposes, if you are at all serious on discovering this band through a Best Of Collection, then buy "The Best Of Extreme: An Accidental Collication of Atoms?" instead. Speaking of a great remastering job, on that Best Of Extreme release at least they got it right. How about a greatest hits CD with some of their better songs that never made any catalog release. For instance, "Never Been Funked", "Better Off Dead", "Sex 'n' Love", "Where You Going?", "When Will It Rain", "Nice Place To Visit". Their Kiss cover of "Strutter" is mind blowing. The "Get The Funk Out" 12' dance remix is so, so, funky. Extreme deserves a better release!

5 out of 5 stars High crime this band is not making music together anymore!.......2002-04-09

It makes no sense that this band is not making music anymore. Extreme, which was called the Dream originally formed in Boston, MA and their creative musical brotherhood ended when Nuno decided to show the world what he can do solo. Thing is, all four of the musicians in this band now have struggling careers. Gary Cherone has formed a fresh, Nine Inch Nails like, industrial/rock band called Tribe Of Judah (with two exExtreme band mates Pat & Mike, and the band looks like their on the rise to stardom). Nuno Bettencourt continues to try to be successful away from Extreme - with his solo disc Schizophonic, and now Mourning Widows (who have been rumored to have broken up now). Both have been commercial disasters, despite being decent rock albums. So it seems to me that this band is on the verge of getting back together maybe. Just listen to the 10 tracks on this Best Of Extreme release and you to will realize the potential that this band had to grow with. It remains to be seen what else this band can do together musically. Whatever it may be though, I am sure it would be of the high standards set by this amazing art rock progressive funk metal band from Boston. Again, high crime there is no more new Extreme music in the making.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT A BAD DR. HOOK GREATEST HITS COMPILATION ALBUM FOR THE CURIOUS BEGINNER!.......2007-07-29

I am writing a review on the legendary greatest hits compilation album entitled "DR. HOOK, GREATEST HITS (AND MORE)" by one of Rock's all-time greatest bands ever. I give you one of America's pride and joy's and one of New Jersey's and Alabama's favorite sons, D-R. H-O-O-K! "DR. HOOK, GREATEST HITS (AND MORE)" was originally released in 1987 on Compact Disc on the Capitol Records label.

DR. HOOK & THE MEDICINE SHOW will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording some of Rock's most sacred classic anthems ever. This band's legendary sound would contain a mixture of Country-flavored Pop/Rock music that would send shivers down your spine. When co-lead vocalist and guitarist Dennis Locorriere joined forces with co-lead vocalist and guitarist Ray Sawyer, lead & steel guitarist George Cummings, Keyboardist Billy Francis and drummer Popeye Phillips who was later replaced with John "Jay" David, DR. HOOK & THE MEDICINE SHOW would be born as a result of Sawyer's distinctive stage presence stemmed from his enormous cowboy hat and an eye patch that hid injuries from a serious car accident in 1967. Sawyer's eye patch would also inspire the nickname DR. HOOK after the Captain Hook character in Walt Disney's Peter Pan. Following the release and extreme success of DR. HOOK & THE MEDICINE SHOW'S self-titled debut album in 1971, the band would add full-time bassist Jance Garfat and another lead guitarist named Rik Elswit in 1972. In 1973, drummer John "Jay" David would leave the group and be replaced by John Wolters. DR. HOOK & THE MEDICINE SHOW would release many great albums throughout the 70's and into the 80's and electrify audiences the world over for many years. "DR. HOOK, GREATEST HITS (AND MORE)" chronicles and highlights the band's many hit songs from the 70's and early 80's period. In my opinion, "DR. HOOK, GREATEST HITS (AND MORE)" is without a doubt, a true testament of the sheer greatness and musical creativity of nine extremely talented musicians. This compilation album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time. "DR. HOOK, GREATEST HITS (AND MORE)" is the continuing adventures in the life and tales of DR. HOOK & THE MEDICINE SHOW. Their music is their story that speaks for itself.

"DR. HOOK, GREATEST HITS (AND MORE) begins with the BOB SEGER sounding acoustic Country Rocker "Sylvia's Mother," the uplifting Country Rocker that came about as a result of the band being on the cover of Rolling Stone, "The Cover Of The Rolling Stone," the beautifully slow rendition of the SAM COOKE classic song "Only Sixteen," the beautifully slow and soothing acoustic number that also sounds a little like BOB SEGER, "A Little Bit More," the incredible Country Rocker "Walk Right In," the amazing Country Rocker "Making Love And Music," the soulful Country Rocker "I Couldn't Believe," the beautifully slow electric acoustic Country song that also sounds a lot like BOB SEGER, "A Couple More Years," the forever DR. HOOK stamped trademark love song "Sharing The Night Together," the breathtaking song that is dedicated to all of the men that have beautiful women in their lives and to all of the beautiful women the world over (Ain't it the truth), "When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman," the beautifully slow and romantic song "Better Love Next Time," the fantastic and sexy Disco love song "Sexy Eyes," the beautifully slow and orchestrated number "Years From Now," the Country Rocker "The Radio" and the beautiful and well arranged orchestrated song "Sweetest Of All." I would like to commend DR. HOOK & THE MEDICINE SHOW on a great job well done. Co-vead vocalist and guitarist Ray (Dr. Hook) Sawyer and other co-lead vocalist and guitarist Dennis Locorriere would blend, harmonize and share the spotlight together brilliantly and perfectly. Both their lead vocals were sizzlin' hot when they laid down the vocal tracks for all of these songs. Well done.

For those that are curious about the music sound of DR. HOOK & THE MEDICINE SHOW, this is not a bad collection to start. I would highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation to own as a valuable and important part of everyone's personal music collection. This compilation album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. You can purchase this legendary compilation album either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store.

In closing, despite the many band personnel changes through the years, DR. HOOK & THE MEDICINE SHOW has successfully continued in releasing more albums and performing live before sell-out audiences the world over up to this very day. Dennis Locorriere became a session and touring vocalist, backing RANDY TRAVIS in 1989. Former drummer John Wolters would die of Cancer in June 1997. Ray (Dr. Hook) Sawyer still tours with the band bearing the DR. HOOK name. I guess you can say that DR. HOOK is here to stay and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. In my opinion, DR. HOOK & THE MEDICINE SHOW has forever left their place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and their many contributions, accomplishments and achievements as a Country Rock and Disco band, will never be forgotten or denied. Knowing this, there will also be new tales and stories in the continuing adventures of the DR. HOOK legend that will still need to be told and written in new pages and chapters. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and read further more about it at a later date. So here's to you Dennis, Ray, George, Billy, Popeye, John, Jance, Rik and the late great John W. Thanks for the many great memories and moments with many more still yet to come. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that you will continue in reading all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. DR. HOOK & THE MEDICINE SHOW RULES! R.I.P. JOHN WOLTERS, Born 28 April 1945, Died 16 June 1997 at age 52. Long Live Rock n' Roll! Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Comp Of Dr. Hook Songs Capitol........2007-03-03

Well in beginning i bought this album for the songs: Cover Of The Rolling Stone & When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman. But as soon i popped in this disc i just fell in love with whole thing. the and more to title of the album impiles the fact that there are few songs tacked on for your listening pleasure, i must say my favorite tracks are: I Could'nt Believe, A Little Bit More. Sexy Eyes & Sharing The Night Together( Are Definitely Disco Influnced) but still likeable. Radio should've may the top ten along with Cover Of The Rolling Stone, Years From Now. Brings tears almost, it's tender ballad. This album is one that you'll want to dance to because there are slow and fast tunes. when i listening to this album i think of palm trees and the sun.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-01-22

Not what I was hoping for. This album does not include several of his best songs. Definitely not his "greatest hits".

3 out of 5 stars BEWARE! WARNING ABOUT THE BRITISH PRESSING!.......2006-10-09

On the advice of another reviewer here i chose the British BMG Entertainment International UK & Ireland Ltd. pressing of 2000, supposedly the best sound available. Unlike many reviewers here I bought it for the Skidoo soundtrack, a classic humdinger of a movie unavailable in video. Like many who have seen the film I felt Carol Channing singing the title song was not only unforgetable, but a standout. In fact to hear a clear unedited version was the reason I bought this CD. Unfortunately about half way through her song the master started to go pop...pop...pop... for almost 30 seconds. This is certainly a factory flaw. I tried playing my flawless brand new CD right out of shrink wrap on various high end CD players in different systems; the pops were still there! Maybe they used the master they did due to its otherwise crisp clean sound, but for me it was a heartbreaking disapointment i spent top dollar on and waited weeks for! I decided to give an extra 2 stars for the 2 splendid versions of I will take You There, and of course the wonderful story The Point, but try to buy the NON british version if there is one for the sake of what may be the best song on here; especially if you have seen the movie.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST AUDIO VERSION AVAILABLE.......2006-08-17

If you are looking for the best audio versions, navigating the array of domestic, European and Japanese releases for each Nilsson album can be a frustrating experience.

I have purchased and painstakingly A/B'd them all, and have posted this review on the best editions of each Nilsson title. All you have to do is find this review and the guesswork is eliminated.

As with all my A/B reviews, the discs were compared on two Sony XA7 transports wired via identical Acoustic Zen coax cables to a Camelot Uther DAC.

The entire catalog was issued in 2002 with Japanese K2 remastering. In terms of remastering, K2 would usually be the end of the story, but this catalog is the rare exception: The final six albums in the K2 offering are the best audio versions, but in the front half of the catalog, the UK and one domestic editions are superior.

The 2004 RCA remaster of "Schmilsson" is the only domestic release that is better than the imports.

Here is a list of the best audio versions:

1. Pandemonium Shadow Show/Aerial Ballet/Aerial Pandemonium Ballet (2CD) (2000) UK BMG/Camden Deluxe (catalog number) 74321 757422
2. Skidoo/The Point (2000) UK BMG/Camden Deluxe 74321 757432

The three 2000 BMG Camden UK releases offer more clarity than the Japanese K2's. Perhaps they were working from better source material.

However, the Japanese K2's are definitely better than the UK "2-fer" discs in the later titles. Unfortunately, the K2's are now OOP, more difficult and expensive to locate, although the Japanese frequently re-issue catalog titles.

Before purchasing any OOP Nilsson title off Amazon Marketplace, Half or eBay, I would highly suggest e-mailing the seller (with the catalog number info I have provided above) and confirm the listing. The seller may have another edition of these titles mis-listed.

3 out of 5 stars Nilsson & Tipton were a fab combination.......2005-09-05

I can vouch for Greg Cleary's opinion of SKIDOO. It's utter crap. With the stunning exception of I CAN TAKE YOU THERE, which benefits enormously from George Tipton's brilliant orchestration. Tipton's harpsichord usage is far superior to, say, Brian Wilson's harpsichord usage in CAROLINE NO.

5 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories.......2005-03-14

This is awesome!! When I was younger (I'm 19), my mother played The Point for my sisters and me all the time. Still to this day we sing the songs to each other. It's excellent that I could find this, as the original and everything....I'm totally impressed and overjoyed...:)

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for "The Point".......2003-02-27

"Skidoo" is mostly filler, i.e., instrumental soundtrack music. It's brassy, sort of like the filler music on the "Graduate" soundtrack. But the album does contain one great song ("I Will Take You There") and one good one ("Garbage Can Ballet") plus Nilsson's awe-inspiring rendition of the film credits, which is not something you will want to listen to every day but is an astounding feat of--for lack of a better term--musical athleticism.

"The Point" is the real reason to buy this CD. It's a charming, whimsical children's story with several songs that wisely focus more on melody than on plot development. The alternating of narrative passages with songs does take some getting used to, but is worth it. I don't listen to "The Point" as often as my other Nilsson albums, because the story line makes it more like watching a movie or reading a book. Still, it is an impressive album that is historically significant because it closed out the first part of Nilsson's career, just before he moved into the more adult themes of the Schmilsson albums. Nilsson's narration of "The Point" reveals him to be a gifted comedian, and also provides some insight into his personality, particularly his love of the absurd.

Now for the bonus tracks: "I Will Take You There" sounds quite similar to the original. (Unless you are a connoisseur of "alternate" versions of songs, which I am not.) "Girlfriend" is a bouncy, good-natured tune that I am glad to have here. "Down to the Valley" is a very good song that would have fit in well on "The Point." "Buy My Album" is incredibly annoying--a noisy joke that gets old very quickly. Be ready to leap for the controls before it comes on.

The CD booklet, by the way, is thin and contains some brief but memorable liner notes.

To sum up: This disc is a good value as long as it costs less than one-and-a-half of either of the originals. I would not want to waste my money buying "Skidoo" for its own sake, but it makes an interesting add-on to "The Point."

4 out of 5 stars The "plays" the thing.......2007-02-20

Certainly most serious collectors will already have a large percentage of the extremely popular titles on ATLANTIC RECORDS * FIFTY YEARS among their holdings. The advantage of this great two-CD set is the opportunity to enjoy a parade of individual career highlights in chronological order. So there's nothing at all wrong with duplication, provided some thought has gone into the programming. This is why "Best Of" albums traditionally sell very well.

The songs here span the years 1958 to '96. ATLANTIC's first decade, as well as many artists, have been neglected-- perhaps unnecessarily. Properly done, an additional 43 minutes of programming could easily have been provided-- thus the 4 star rating. Includes a two-page company bio, and all recording dates.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection, but..........2005-10-07

If you're gonna celebrate a record company's 50th Anniversary, it'd be better to issue a boxset instead of a 2 CD collection. Despite it's flaws, this is a great collection from the GREATEST record company of all time. Other songs I feel play an important part in Atlantic's history are:

"Mr. Soul" by Buffalo Springfield
"You Can't Stop Rock n Roll" by Twisted Sister
"Forever Young" by Alphaville
"Wanted Man" by Ratt
"After The Fire" by Roger Daltrey
"Need You Tonight" by INXS
"Wild Wild West" by Escape Club
"Seventeen" by Winger
"I Remember You" by Skid Row
"To Be With You" by Mr. Big
"Got Myself Together" by The Bucketheads

Just to name a few.

4 out of 5 stars A nice trip down memory lane for Atlantic's first 50 years.......2004-07-31

The only complaint about the 2-CD set "Atlantic Records: 50 Years" is that if you have a solid music collection you are going to have almost all of these 26 tracks. I was only missing out on "Baby" by Brandy, which resulted in nary a ripple of regret on my part. But then I also have to admit that most music listeners are going to be heavily into the early music or the alter music, but maybe not both. Trying to cover fifty years of music on two discs is a rather daunting task and this particular collection makes it a bit easier by focusing on R&B and rock. Still, for a trip down memory lane "Atlantic Records: 50 Years" this does cover songs that are some of the best known from their catalogue.

The first disc begins with the R&B and soul music from the 1950s and 1960s, including the long version of "What I'd Say" by Ray Charles. It will drive you crazy that there is only one track by Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin, but the rules of the game are just one bite of the apple per artist, and it is hard to complain about "In the Midnight Hour" or "Respect" as the choices. The songs you find here are the ones most associated with the artists, from Ben E. King's "Stand by Me" to Sam and Dave's "Soul Man." It is only when you get to the rock legends at the end of the first disc that the choices are clearly limited to what singles they released on Atlantic. That explains why Led Zeppelin does "Whole Lotta Love" and the Rolling Stones do "Brown Sugar." Led Zep did not do singles and the Stones only stopped by Atlantic for a cup of coffee, but the album gets bonus points for skipping the single cut of "Whole Lotta Love" for the album version.

The second disc covers much more of the musical spectrum, from the progressive rock of "Roundabout" by Yes and the disco classic "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge to the more eclectic offerings of Tori Amos's "Silent All These Years" and Hootie & the Blowfish's "Hold My Hand." Somehow throwing together Stevie Nicks, Bette Midler and Brandy on the second disc seems more of a reach than having Bobby Darin, Otis Redding, and Percy Sledge on the first. But then how do Chic, Phil Collins and Foreigner not suffer in comparison to the likes of Cream and Crosby, Stills & Nash? It is only with the contemporary artists that the choices of the songs for the respective artists strike me as being debatable (I would have gone with "Winter" for Tori Amos and "Foolish Games" for Jewel). Of course, I have those songs so I can "fix" the play list here if I want and you probably will be able to do so too. As I indicated at the start, this is a nice trip down memory lane but only if you can not do better on your own with what you currently have in your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Satisfying.......2000-11-16

I have to be honest and acknowledge that I ordered this dual CD set originally for the sole curiosity of hearing Yes' "Roundabout" & Phil Collin's "In the Air Tonight" in HDCD format. Well I was not disappointed with these two songs. I wish only that more titles could be released in HDCD - THEY ARE UNEQUIVOCALLY WORTH IT ON BOTH HDCD & CONVENTIONAL CD PLAYERS. Anyway, I was surprised with how I enjoyed many of the other titles too. Covering 50 years in a compilation is pretty risky since it requires a breadth of taste or at least curiosity on the auditor's part beyond their usual "sweet spot" and always leaves out some noteworthy absent (eg: ELP's "Fanfare for the Common Man"). All these songs were familiar, but I would not have purchased a CD for them; I am glad to have an intro to Ray Charles' "What'd I Say", Ben King's "Stand by Me" or Otis Redding's "The Dock of the Bay" to name just a few. Enjoy this HDCD experience - you will rediscover these songs even if you heard them a thousand times before. By the way, if you like this you must get the "Monster Jazz"' HDCD - it is breath-taking in a different genre!
