Reach For The Sky-Classic Ratt Rock!.......2007-06-23

If you like Ratt then you'll love this classic Ratt album.One of the first six albums by the original Ratt. All tracks are pure Ratt-N-Roll.

This is where they lost me.......2006-06-01

I had been a fan of this band from the EP, but this release changed my attitude. The pop overtones that began to leak from Dancing Undercover really come to the forefront. Perhaps it was the polished production, or the poppy chorus to 'I Want a Woman.' And although their musicianship became clear with the bluesy 'Way Cool Jr' that song was just too much of a departure for my taste. Otherwise, nothing stands out on this album- all the other songs had the same tone and there was no variation to Pearcy's vocal range- not that he ever had range. Same old, same old. I longed for the heavy stuff like "Wanted Man" or "You're In Love", but there is none of that on this album. They were clearly out for radio play here, and it shows badly. More Warrant than Megadeth- a bad move.

A solid album.......2006-05-30

This is Ratt's fifth album. This isn't like the straight forward raw heavy metal of there Out Of The Cellar days but still a good pop metal album. Overall the album isn't very consistent with some great songs, some solid songs and some filler songs.

1.City to City- 10/10 A great opener. The riff is great and the lyrics are cool. Pearcy's vocals are enjoyable and the guitar solo is excellent. The chorus is very catchy too. This should have been a big hit. An underrated classic.

2.I Want a Woman- 10/10 Another great catchy song. This was a minor hit on MTV. The riff is catchy and the chorus is good too. Warren DeMartini's solo is great and the harmony line is excellent too.

3.Way Cool Jr.- 8/10 The albums only real hit song. Not one of the better songs but still a good song. This song is slow and bluesy. This actually reminds me a bit of classic Def Leppard. The guitar solo is excellent too.

4.Don't Bite the Hand That Feeds- 10/10 A great song with a good heavy riff. The chorus and vocals are good too. Another great guitar solo too.

5.I Want to Love You Tonight- 10/10 An excellent power ballad. This should have been a hit. Stephen Pearcy's vocals sound very good. The soft part is excellent and the chorus is awesome. The guitar solo is excellent and has a ton of emotion and a great harmony line.

6.Chain Reaction- 9/10 A great fast song that reminds me of Van Halen. The riff is excellent and the chorus is catchy too. The solo is one of the best on the album too.

7.No Surprise- 7/10 A pretty good song. I don't really like the chorus but it's not a bad song. More great lead guitar though.

8.Bottom Line- 8/10 A good catchy song. the riff is good and the chorus is catchy as hell. The solos are excellent too. A good song but not a classic.

9.What's It Gonna Be- 10/10 A good catchy pop metal song. I like the riff and chorus a lot on this song. Another excellent solo too

10.What I'm After- 7/10 This is a pretty good song although it is really poppy. More great lead guitar too.

Overall the album isn't very consistent with some great songs, some solid songs and some filler songs. Maybe the bands most commercial album. This was not there most succesful album but it did have some good anthems and a suprisingly good power ballad. Warren DeMartini solo's are great as always and this is a solid hair metal album although it is probably the bands worst album with the classic line up. I think if they had spent maybe another few months on this album it would have been a classic because there is plenty of great songs on this album

Not as bad as other reviewers make it out to be.......2006-02-25

Reach For The Sky is no "Dancing Undercover" but it still good. It kinda lacks a little in the middle of the CD though. Still some awsome songs are on this disc.

"City To City"-10/10: Great opening track, one of my favorite Ratt songs

"I Want A Woman"-10/10: Another great song

"Way Cool Jr."-10/10: The biggest song on off the album, great song but the video kinda sucks

"Don't Bite The Hand That Feeds"-7.5/10: Here is where it starts to lack, this song has grown on me even though the first couple listens I hated it.

"I Want To Love You Tonight"-4/10: If you like ballads, listen to "Given Yourself Away", this one isn't that good

"Chain Reaction"-7.5/10: see "Don't Bite The Hand That Feeds"

"No Surprise"-4/10: I never liked this song that much

"Bottom Line"-9/10: Now we're starting to pick up agian, this one had to grow on me a little, but it is better than tracks 4 and 6

"What's It Gonna Be"-10/10: My personal favorite song on this album, I love this song as much as any other Ratt song such as "Dance", "Wanted Man" etc.

"What I'm After"-10/10: A close second to the previous song, and a great way to end a decent album

Weak Ratt.......2005-08-20

Ratt is a group with such energy and awesome riffs and lyrics, but this cd surprised me because it's so weak and almost lame. All good groups seem to have a dud and for Ratt this one is it. I wouldn't suggest this cd to anyone unless they just want to complete their Ratt collection, as I do.

Remastered Gem.......2004-12-31

A terrific CD release from the short lived Capricorn reissue series of the late 90's. This was the first album by the band and featured the original line up which lasted thru 5'll Getcha'Ten. A great mix of acoustic and electric material which benefits from a top notch remastering job using the original master tapes. While this doesn't cover as much material or time as the earlier CD compilation, "A Different Time" (supposedly recalled due to licensing issues), it is more of a snapshot in time when the band were a bit more acoustic but no less brillant. The songwriting and vocals are still classic Scott Boyer/ Tommy Talton and the remastering brings them right up front. Long overdue for a CD release, the only negative is that it has become fairly hard to find these days.

i too have the double lp "why quit when yourlosing" it contains the other album "5'll getcha 10" along with "reach for the sky" i wish someone would reissue that double lp on disc. this is great stuff from the old school southern rock genre.i always said there never would have been any "eagles" without bands like this...

Brings back memories!.......2002-12-12

I have a double LP that contains all of these Cowboy titles. It is called "Why Quit When You're Losing" but it doesn't play too well with all the scratches. I was elated to find this CD. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys good old country rock.

Just Great !.......1999-03-22

I've heared Cowboy for the first time on Gregg Allman's Album "On Tour '74". The second time I have heared them on Bonnie Bramlett's album "It's time" (also a great album). And now I'm owning "Reach For The Sky" and it's just great - one "Hit" after another, especially the song "It's time". Trust an Austrian music lover and buy this CD !! I would like to have more music from BOYER/TALTON.

1973's 'reach for the Sky' is the Third Recording Issued by the Alliance of Previously Separate UK Groups the Sutherland Brothers Band and Quiver. Their Sweet Vocal Harmonies and Bluesy Tunesmanship Made them a UK Favorite. Includes their Biggest Hit 'arms of Mary', (Which was Later Covered by the Everly Brothers on their Second Comeback Album), 'when the Train Comes', 'dirty City', 'ain't Too Proud' and Six More.

Why was this band ignored in the U.S.??.......2003-11-18

This is by far the best album the Sutherland Bros. did.
The sad thing is the group and their output was almost completely ignored in this country. Songs like "Arms of Mary",
"Love on the Moon", and "Doctor Dancer" are wonderful examples of the groups' simple, but elegant writing and performance style.
Of course when this album was released disco was still the rage
and anything not sung in falsetto was pushed aside and quickly relegated to the cut-out bin. The albums that followed this one were good too, but in my opinion REACH FOR THE SKY was the band's high point.If you own nothing by the Sutherland Brothers, and are curious about them, then start with this album. I'll bet you'll be looking for more very shortly.

Best of a great band.......2001-08-31

Simply put, Reach for the Sky represents the pinnacle of the Sutherland Brother's underappreciated output. Released in 1975, it contains 10 concise, melodic cuts and seems to exist well apart from its 1970s context. The recording is crisp and clear; the arrangements spare and invigorating. 25 years ago I awaited each new recording from this band and, sadly, not many more were forthcoming. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend Gavin Sutherland's 2000 CD "Diamond's and Gold" (see http://www.gavinsutherland.net/).

OK, so maybe ALL the 70's didn't rot..........2001-06-27

A caveat: This CD almost lets me forgive 70's schlockmeisters Ron & Howie Albert, the producers of "Reach For The Sky," for ruining Procol Harum's "Something Magic," which they also "produced"...the operative word there being "almost." I'm not sure who either the Sutherland Brothers OR Quiver were, but evidentally, they were two separate entities who pooled their considerable talents for this album. I remember being very stoned, very late one night back in 1976 and driving home from my girlfriend's house across the Newburgh-Beacon bridge up in NY. The "hip" radio station played "Doctor Dancer," and I almost wrecked my Volkswagen, trying to get off the road, or at least somewhere where I didn't have to be so responsible while driving, so I could devote my full attention to that song. Luckily for me, Pat, a friend of mine, was a security-person at a record store, and he correctly identified "Reach For The Sky." A marvelous bit of music: no excessive-"70's" drumming, no "wee-wee-diddly-diddly" "lead" guitar (THANK YOU, Tim Renwick), and, thank God, no synthesizers; just ten beautifully written, beautifully performed songs. All ten are for listening when you're head's in a...good place, and "Dr. Dancer" still almost affects me now, some 25 years later, as it did then. The title track and "Mad Trail" are great, too.

They Reached It.......2000-02-28

This is possibly their best album, and contains their only charting U.S. single, Arms Of Mary. Concise hook filled pop songs with fine guitar work. When The Train Comes really grooves along. Still waiting for their other fine latter day albums, Slipstream, Night Comes Down, and Down To Earth, to come out on CD.

Excellent Country-Tinged Brit Pop.......1999-11-06

By the time this record came out SB&Q was down to 4 members from the original 6. No matter, they were still great. The Albert's production is excellent, the band cooks on the When the train comes, Tim Renwick's guitar solo on Ain't to Proud to Beg is exquisite. There is not a bad song on the album - buy it and enjoy it.

He is the voice of smooth jazz on Detroit morning radio and an underrated pioneer of the genre, who has been making records, featuring his flute, for 20 years. His comeback effort is a pleasant addition to his otherwise hard-to-find catalog. With an all-star cast and big-name producers, including smooth-jazz stars Jeff Lorber and Kirk Whalum, Zonjic doesn't take any musical chances here or fly beyond the smooth-jazz radar. Seven of the 10 tracks are familiar cover tunes, ranging from smooth-jazz classics by Bob James and Chuck Mangione to pop gems by the Beatles and Carole King. Zonjic's fellow Detroiter, Earl Klugh, spices up the early part of the disc, while the sterling production and the light flute style keeps the album moving the rest of the way. A matter of preference.......2004-09-17

Alexander Zonjic cannot be beaten when it comes to smooth jazz on the flute, where he is to the flute what Pete Fountain is to the clarinet. Mr. Zonjic used to play in the evenings at as restaurant near me, and we usually ate early, compared to when the music started. The result: on several occasion, we were treated to hearing Alexander Zonjic rehearse many different pieces, including those listed here. Good food and great music for no extra price! So, why not five stars? That is purely an issue of personal preference, as I am not a big fan of jazz vocals, and some of these pieces have vocal segments. I cannot fault the quality of the singing; I'd just prefer the instrumental music by itself. How about 4.8 stars?

Satiny Smooth Flute.......2002-07-24

Long time listener to Zonjic in the morning here in Motown, this CD was a natural.

Marvelous arrangements of pop tunes plus some jazz greats played by this smooth jazz flutist, accompanied by very jazz greats the likes of Klugh, etc.

Enjoy this more than the Tim Weisberg stuff, which at times went to far towards reverb and rock sound. This is just nice, smooth sounds with beat and class.

Give it a second listen.......2006-04-13

Compare this to "Fillmore East" "Eat a Peach" and their best works and it is going to come up short- no question. But compare it to the work of most other bands and this still comes up smelling like a rose. Dickey gets off a good instrumental in "From the Madness of the West" and Gregg's 7 minute composition "So Long" is a really great number. There are some songs not up to the usual Allmans standard here but there's still some very good stuff here. 3.5 stars.

Still Enjoyable Although Not Prime Time Material.......2003-07-16

Many critics have bashed this recording as a far cry from the Duane Allman era Allman Brothers Band. Whereas the band did try to imitate the Doobie Brothers and other corporate rock acts on this collection, there are certainly some highlights here.

I like the gospel feel of the opening track, Hell And High Water. Greg and Dickie sound great singing together on this track. Its very reminiscing of sharing old times. From The Madness Of The West is an intriguing instrumental with a nice percussion/drum solo in the middle. Mystery Woman and Angeline are catchy radio friendly tunes.

Maybe not quite on the level of Brothers and Sisters or Idlewide South but there are enough good moments to warrant a three and a half star rating.

Not as bad as some purists think.......1999-09-23

This album, the band's first for Arista, marked the start of the Brothers downhill slide artistically. Arista deserves some of the blame -- it wanted another Doobie Brothers -- but there are still plenty of very good moments here, such as Hell & High Water (a great autobiographical song of the band's history), Angeline and a typically high-quality Dickey Betts intrumental, From The Madness Of The West. Reach For The Sky certainly couldn't equal what came before (or after, in the 1990s), but it's still a keeper album for me.

Squier is underrated.......2004-11-07

While it's true this compilation contains some glaring omissions, on balance, it has nearly all of Squier's most well-known hits. It's also true that, for casual listeners, Squier's Greatest Hits cd will probably suffice. For long-time fans, however, the gems here are the first two tracks from Squier's mid-70s stint with Piper. Material from Piper is unavailable elsewhere and, frankly, I'm amazed those two albums have not been re-released. Squier's work with Piper was a precursor to fine-tuning his rock-pop sensibilities obvious in his later more popular periods. This compliation would have been better served had it been a true career retrospective and included a few more Piper tunes. All in all, not a bad effort, just not inclusive enough.

Great, But Extensive.......2002-09-27

This two-disc anthology proves that Billy Squier had a lot more to offer than just his few most popular songs. In fact, two of the best tracks are fairly obscure: the inspirational/cautionary "Learn How To Live" and "Reach For The Sky." There's also some filler from the later days, and some significant cuts off DON'T SAY NO are missing, but this is a terrific overview of a much underrated 80's rocker.

Despite some filler, this album has all the essentials, including several not found on the "Best Of" collection. A great overview of one of rock's most underrated artists.

Too Much For Casual Fans.......1998-06-21

Despite its comprehensive liner notes and inclusion of Squier rarities (including his work with Piper), this dual-CD collection is a bit much to digest, and it would have been more effective had its obscure filler been removed. Also, Squier's Christmas tune, "Christmas Is the Time to Say I Love You," made popular by an early-80s MTV video with the original VJs, is absent, as are a few key cuts from "Don't Say No" and "Signs of Life." Dedicated fans will probably already own Squier's biggest albums (there are only three), and neophytes should look elsewhere.

I work in the Music Industry so hear a lot of music. The musicianship on this album is superb and the album as a whole is something different from the norm. Very enjoyable.
