Five stars is not enough..........2007-07-30
It is too bad there are not more new bands like Live in the music industry these days. Music, like everything else, evolves over time and there are new voices and new styles (which I'm not saying are bad, just different). I happen to be stuck in the 90's rock and alternative movement. I can't help it. I still have to have my regular doses of Smashing Pumpkins, Bush, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and so on..
Live is most definitely a solid band with incredible hits that are timeless enough to be played on a daily basis on popular radio stations all over the world.
Throwing Copper, among their other CD's is intelligently done and sounds awesome!
Words can't explain how one song makes this album worth the price..........2007-06-29
...That one song is Lightning Crashes. So moving, so emotional, so powerful, it's hard to explain why this song is so good, other than that. It alone (to me) is worth the entire price of the album, but then you get a whole slew of other great songs that are very good. The most notable other ones are I Alone and All Over You.
But Lightning Crashes is up there in my Top 5 Songs of all time.

Something about these songs just ROCK. They click for me, and each one is great in its own way. I like such a wide range of music that it was hard picking just 5(6) songs, but those are the ones that "do it" for me.

This has got to be one of the best albums in the world, ever. An absolute iconic masterpiece. I have owned it for 9 years and it stil gives me goosebumps. Buy it. As well as 'The distance to here' by Live.

I have to say that when I first heard "I Alone" on MTV back in 95 I believe, I really didn't like the song at all. I was 25, and really into metal bands like Sepultura, Metallica, Megadeth and so forth. Yet by the grace of God a girl friend of one of my friends had the "cassette" if you believe that, and I was bored one day so I thought I'd check it out for the hell of it. First listen I immediately noticed the song Iris. Hell yeah this song rocks! And this coming from a metalhead no less. So thankfully for that one song, I gave the rest of the album a chance. Fast forward 11 years. Here I am, owning all of their albums and am a devoted fan. Go figure. lol. One other thing I have to mention, this is my favortie cd to listen to while driving around on a pleasant sunny day. I have not yet found a cd comparable to this one in that respect.
Simply passion..........2006-01-20
I'm a fan of music...any music that intoxicates me. This album is the core definition of what music should be. Those in search of complexity in music should note how this album is layed out and simply how passionate Ed K. is. It's not timing, it's not much more than 3 chord riffs...it's how those riffs were manipulated and how perfect everything was put togther. Throwing Copper is amazing and it encases a short time when kids were poetic, a little dark, and looking for outlets to release their angst. This album is just that...it's leans to a darker side, poetic, and simply mesmerizing. This is a perfect example of unrestrained poetic passion without the constraints of mainstream pressure. It's gorgeously amazing and when you listen to any song from this album, you know you're feeling what Ed K. was experiencing. A few good songs since then but Live has put out nothing comparable in my opinion. I've been blessed to have this album since it's release. I still listen to it...and if you don't have it, for God sake...go get it.

The opening track of the album by Darling Violetta, is absolutely fantastic. Having all the Buffy albums and knowing how thought provoking the music is from that show, I did expect more from the Angel album. But it's still good music and any fan would be happy to say they have it.

One of my favorite is season 5 episode 6 "The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco " I wish this compilation include the guitar solo section. I am completely opposite to the one of the reviewer. I love the music part only. I find it inspiring. There's some Hans Zimmer style in it. I really dig it...quiet yet powerful. However, it start to become a little too formulated. Too much of the same thing is definitely not a good thing. Ahhh, classic tragic hero stories. I can't resist.

Haitink's integral set of Beethoven Symphonies with the London Symphony has none of the stodginess that sometimes afflicted his earlier recordings with the Concertgebouw. His restudy of the works, and the presence of concert audiences translate into faster tempos, sharper accents, wider dynamic range and an overall sense of energy that imbue these nine masterpieces. Here, the Classic style is wed to Romantic expressivity but not to Romantic excess, Competition is abundant, ranging from Toscanini, Furtwängler, and the 1963 von Karajan to recent sets from the sometimes hyperkinetic Vanska, the more traditional Abbado, and the insightful Barenboim. But this new Haitink set, available in hybrid SACD/CD, is a solid contender.
The early First and Second symphonies benefit from Haitink's leaner, more vivacious approach. The Eroica also sounds fresher. Its slow movement is still a funeral march, but moves a hair faster this time, just enough to be the difference between a pace that drags and a pace that flows and retains interest. In the outer movements, there's a new spring to the rhythms and clarity in orchestral balances, and this Eroica has the cumulative intensity to make its full effect. Haitink's Fourth is in a grander mold than we usually hear. While never overblown, it has some of the wider scope and heroism of the odd-numbered symphonies. Like the Eroica, it is rhythmically vigorous and the prominent tympani and brass make an impact that sweeps the listener along. The Fifth can suffer from over-exposure but here it has a variety of tonal colors, tempos, and dynamics that make it seem newly minted while no less grand. The propulsive finale, with its pounding tympani and expertly played journey to transcendence, is especially memorable.
The Sixth, the Pastorale, has that same feeling, its flowing tempos and skillful interpretive choices make this one of the best Sixths since Böhm's, with plenty of excitement in the Storm and warmth in the final movement. The Seventh gets a buoyant reading, predominately lyrical without neglecting its powerful rhythms. The driven final movement is exhilarating without being hectic. The Eighth is often considered the slightest of the Nine but Haitink's brisk tempos make it dance and swagger; the lyrical sections played with engaging warmth. As for the Ninth, it is miles ahead of Haitink's earlier versions. The harmonic mist that opens the work is well delineated, the contrasts within movements carefully marked, the Scherzo bursting with energy, the incomparable Adagio sings at a more fluid tempo, the choral final movement as good as any in the catalogue, its structure crystal clear under Haitink's baton. The major filler in the set is the often scorned Triple Concerto, which gets a performance of warm lyricism that can only elevate its status.
The playing of the London Symphony is phenomenal, especially since these are live recordings. The violins' tone glows with radiance, their precise articulation helps make the rhythms energetic, the winds are uniformly excellent, the brass sleekly powerful, the potent percussion authoritative in climaxes. If a criticism can be made it would be that bass lines are sometimes weaker than desirable, perhaps a function of engineering that varies in clarity from disc to disc but is never less than good. In sum, a major addition to the Beethoven Symphony discography. --Dan Davis

Worth every Penny !.......2007-06-25
I finally listened to every symphony after 2 weeks. I have to say, every performance sounded quite prestine. I especially enjoyed the 6th and the 9th.
I agree with one reviewer in that the first movement of the 5th seemed a tad fast. Honestly thats the only complaint I have of this collection. If you enjoy classical music and appreciate high fidelity music, this is a must have !

These recordings have outstanding sound quality, as other reviewers have said. None of them are less than worthwhile, and I think the rendition of the Eroica is sensational, the best I've heard. The 9th is also among the best. The 5th, though, is not in the same class. Another reviewer has commented on the tempo of the first movement, which I agree is too fast; unfortunately, so is much of the rest of the piece. (Bernstein's 1990 recording with the Vienna Philharmonic is much better.) Still, no one could fault the LSO's playing, or the sound. Worth the money for the Eroica and the 9th alone.
smoothed out edges.......2007-03-03
Unlike some other recordings of Beethoven's work, this compilation permeates the composer's will and presents a series of golden renditions. The assembly of London musicians is in top form (which is usual for them) and they seem motivated to convey all nuances throughout. For those who long to use these compositions for peace of mind, feel assured that that peace will indeed come.
Solid live performances, great sound, but a little identity crisis?.......2007-02-27

When I first listened through this cycle I was impressed and rated it 5-stars. I remain impressed, but something about these performances bothers me, a sort of unevenness that is overcome on first listen by the excitement. So I am re-reviewing with a 4-star rating.
I do not think, as some have suggested, that these are per se "historically informed performances" (what performance isn't historically informed, after all?). I would describe them as having (on balance) an updated traditional approach which benefits from generally well-balanced orchestral forces, brisk tempi, modest levels of conductor-induced drama and nuance, and remarkable sound quality that lets all the facets of the music shine through (the tympani occasionally jump out a bit too far for my tastes, as if they're perched on the conductor's podium). However, Haitink's cadences in these live recordings seems a little uneven to me, distracting ever so slightly from the natural momentum.
I found myself thinking that the the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and the 5th (at least in places) sound a bit like HIP performances, but the others (notably the 4th, which has a surprisingly big sound and broad, sweeping lines) sound like relatively brisk "big-band" treatments. Maybe that is simply Beethoven's music changing and not Haitink's interpretations, but I doubt it. I can't decide whether the legendary conductor is 1) pandering to HIP enthusiasts with a little extra speed here and there, 2) just can't decide how Beethoven in general ought to be played, or 3) is simply giving each symphony it's own identity (as he sees it). Those who love Haitink will presume the latter, and they might be right.
The Zinman cycle with Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich is currently my favorite -- I love the lean, wiry energy and brisk but controlled tempi Zinman delivers on modern instruments with a small orchestra -- and at this point I find myself judging everything against it. I am also very fond of the late Gunter Wand's forthright readings with the NDR. At present, despite my newfound reservations, this Haitink cycle would probably be my third choice, a step or two ahead of Harnoncourt/COE. I also think this cycle would work out well for anyone who finds merit in both HIP and traditional approaches and just can't decide. This is a big orchestra sound energetically delivered with small orchestra transparency.
If you don't need SACD, this collection can be purchased as a set from a leading download site for less than a single SACD disc. Getting sleepy?
This latest Beethoven Symphonies cycle is not that great .......2007-02-13
I already have 2 sets of Beethoven symphonies cycle, Karajan, released 12/6/2005, and Gardiner, released September 20, 1994, and many other individuals. Then I pruchased this set because of reviews in Amazon here and nomination of Grammy 2007. After listening to some of them(No,3,5,9), I would say they are not that fantastic. The No.5 sounds strange in paticular comparing others. It seemed played in different pace from others. Then the overall recording quality is rather poor. "SACD" in here is somewhat misleading. The live recording is more challanging than in studio. But SFS still could achieve well balanced and refined recording in live. Its Mahler NO.7 won Grammy classical award this year. However, I dont know it was recorded in live or studio.
I like Beethoven No.9 very much, not this one though. Try Osmo Vanska, released 10/24/2006. Its excellent performance and SACD recording even surpasses the Karajan.

A collection of hits, that I am a bit tired of..........2007-02-18
This cd contains the "hits" from the band, under Phil Collins era, I have to say that I'm a bit tired of hearing these songs, but also, most of these live versions are "refreshing" to hear in a different version.
I prefer these versions to the original ones. The sound is pretty good for a live release. That's All folks !
SLOPPY, BUT GOOD++.......2006-05-21
I don't know what it is with me and Phil Collins/Genesis; their syruppy-synth-soundscapes just kinda stick to my heart like sap, I guess. And what can you possibly say to justify Phil Collins' place on the pop-charts? He's an amazing vocalist, unique and emotive; the songs on this CD are just as dark as anything Genesis has written, with a bit of up-beat pop thrown in between; the basic difference between Phil Collins' solo career and the music of Genesis is that Phil Collins has mostly been a nice-guy-pop-act and Genesis has tended toward more brooding dark-room songs. Even songs like "Invisible touch" and "Jesus He KNows Me" are at least a tad bit cynicle ("Jesus He Knows Me" has a social message, so it's obviously more darker, at least in the lyrical range; it's not slow, so people tend to think it's a "positive" song). So given that information, this CD is basically a collection of top-hits by the band kinda re-imagined. Even the songs that this concert is supposed to be part of a tour for (We Can't Dance) sound a little different than the album versions and that's what makes this album worthy of fitting into a CD collection. The opener sounds kinda out of breath altogether, not just vocally; which is odd, b/c I think they opened the actual concert with that song ("Land of Confusion"), but either the wheeziness (spelling??) gets taken care of or it's just less noticeable as the CD progresses into other songs...I don't know; perhaps Collins sounds breathless as a way of connecting with his fellow middle-aged audience-members (they say Genesis was trying to connect with a baby-boomer market when they did INVISIBLE TOUCH in 1986). I'm no middle-aged man/boy/??, but my father (who was in his 20s at the time) was said by my mother (also in her 20s at the time) to have LOVED Genesis and I guess he listened to them quite often. I was describing the synth opener of a 1972 song called "Watcher of The Skies" (back when Peter Gabriel was lead singer, for those of you that don't know too much about Genesis) to my mother (I had bought the CD Foxtrot out of curiousity) and she said she thought she knew what I was talking about. And earlier in my life (not long before, a couple yrs tops - I'm 22 now) I bought SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND and was almost SURE I recognized one of the synth-lines or whatever they're/it's called in "The Battle of Epping Forrest"...so based on those two facts, I'm pretty sure my father (who abandoned me and my family when I was 7) loved Genesis. And my mother couldn't stop listening to INVISIBLE TOUCH, their only "really good" album according to her. So I think that's probably why the syruppy-sweetness of this music and most of all else by this band sticks to my heart like sap, so to speak. So anyway, I doubt I changed anyone's totally biased opinion about this album or the band, but I hope I made myself clear as to why I am the way I am, in case anyone who knows me reads this!
Better than being there.......2005-02-23
I saw Genesis on the "We Can't Dance" Tour in Hannover, Germany. And while I certainly was completely blown away by that concert, this record delivers even more of what a Genesis concert should be like.
Yes, I admit that I'm no fan of their earlier stuff. Matter of taste, surely. Also, it was just before my time. Anyhow, what I liked most about "The Way We Walk Vol. 1 - The Shorts" was the absence of all those older, overly lengthy, artistic songs that don't really mean anything to me. Precisely what other reviewers here lamented -- that everything on this record comes from just three albums, namely "Genesis", "Invisible Touch", and "We Can't Dance" -- makes it so great for me; for as far as I'm concerned, Genesis before those is rather uninspiring.
The performances are just as great as could righteously be expected. I think that the energy from the (quite audible) audience really adds nicely to the band's, especially of course in the Phil Collins trademark back-and-forth singing contest with the audience at the beginning of "Throwing It All Away", but also quite notably at the beginning of "I Can't Dance" (watch out for the audience's reaction to the "boing" sound!). Subtly altered lyrics, mostly a little naughtier than the originals, add to the personal feeling -- it feels like being there. And that "I Can't Dance" was recorded before a German audience, as becomes clear from the shouts of "Zugabe! Zugabe!" (encore) at the end, just means the last bit of delight for me. Hey, I might have been there after all!
If you insist that something negative must be said about this record, I'll admit that I didn't care for the long-winded endings of "No Son of Mine", and especially "I Can't Dance". I keep thinking, "come on, man, that's enough", but on and on he goes. But that's a really minor nuisance. No reason to cut down the five star rating.
If you're from the same generation as I am -- us who grew up with the sinister "Ha ha! Ha! *rowr*" from "Mama", the Spitting Image puppets from "Land of Confusion", and the Levis spots that got so brilliantly defaced in "I Can't Dance" -- this is The Essential Genesis Record. If not, kindly disregard this review.
Yes it's more Commercial than Old Genesis, but its very good.......2004-11-02
When it comes to the rock band, Genesis - I think this band is often unfarily criticized for going "commercial". Yes, the band did move into more of a pop-music direction in the 1980s, but I think they added a breath of fresh air to the pop music and paritcularly 80s landscape. As a result, Genesis picked up a lot of new fans - many of whom probably went on to appreciate many of their earlier works. The album, "The Way We Walk - Volume 1: The Shorts" presents a collection of 11 live tracks from what is considered the commercial/pop era of Genesis.
When I look at Genesis as band, I see four distinct phases the band has gone through. Phase 1 is the Peter Gabriel Era. This spans from 1969 ("From Genesis to Revelation") to 1974 ("The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"). It was during Phase 1 that Peter Gabriel was the lead vocalist and Genesis could easily be categorized as a progressive Rock band. Phase 2 is the Early Phil Collins Era spanning from 1976 ("A Trick of the Tail") to 1982 ("Three Sides Live"). In this era, Phil Collins took over as lead singer. The band was still very much a progressive rock band, but as the progressive rock landscape would change - so would Genesis. This might indirectly have led to Phase 3 which is the Late Phil Collins Era from 1983 ("Genesis") to 1993 ("The Way We Walk Volume 2: The Longs"). This is the commercial/pop era that I referred to earlier. At this point, there would be a lot less progressive rock flavor to Genesis' music. The fourth phase, Phase 4 is the Ray Wilson Era. This was when Ray Wilson took over as lead vocalist for Phil Collins. There would only be one album in this era - 1997's "Calling All Stations" and it seemed like Genesis tried to recapture some of their progressive rock roots - but 90s style. "Calling All Stations" would do poor commercially and Ray Wilson would take the fall and be asked to leave the band.
In Phase 3, Genesis would grow more and more successful commercially with each album release. Some of this probably would do to the fact that Phil Collins' solo career was also taking off. The last studio album that Phil Collins would do with Genesis was "We Can't Dance". It was a huge commercial success and resulted in a hugely successful World Tour. Naturally, the band decided to capitalize on the success of that World Tour by releasing a live album and video. Genesis had done live albums before ("Three Sides Live", "Seconds Out", "Genesis Live"). On each live album, the focus of the live material would on the studio releases that had not been done live up until that point. Genesis had not done a live release for Phase 3, thus "The Way We Walk" would have a focus on this material. For this live release, Genesis would employ a unique formula - they would release the material in a two volume set called "The Way We Walk". Volume 1 would focus on the shorter (normal) length songs. Volume 2 would focus on Genesis' trademark longer songs. For the purposes of this review, I'll focus on Volume 1.
Normally when there is a live release, I prefer the album to be a live recording from a single concert performance. I prefer it to be delivered in the order in which the songs were actually delivered. By having things from a single night and in order - I feel there is continuity and the magic of the concert is captured perfectly. Since Genesis took this unique approach to the way they were presenting this live material, this was going to be very hard to do. However, the material was strong enough to overcome this. Yes, I still would have preferred a two volume CD that contained a night from the 1992 "We Can't Dance" Tour in its entirety, but the production and engineering isn't bad and it does a nice job at ordering the songs and giving the "quasi appearance" that this may be from one night (even though the ordering is shuffled). I also like the two volume approach - I find it very convienient to listen to either the "short" songs or "long" songs (depending on my mood)".
The most interesting song is "Invisible Touch". I always thought this was an "average" song for Genesis, but there is something about hearing this song live that blows me away. I love the way they end the song. I also love how they segue from "Tonight Tonight Tonight" into "Invisible Touch". Yes they made "Tonight Tonight Tonight" from a long song to a short one, but it works the way they performed this song and the segue. Similar to "Invisible Touch", I love Genesis' spin on "Throwing It All Away" - featuring Phil leading the crowd in a participatory "It away!" chant and Mike Rutherford's guitar is awesome in it. Two strong songs from "We Can't Dance" are "No Son of Mine" and "Jesus He Knows Me". Phil's performance of "Jesus He Knows Me" was very theatrical in concert when I saw him and on this recording it translates very nicely to audio. Not forgetting Tony Banks, his keyboards are spellbinding on "Mama" - as are Phil's vocals.
The liner notes are weak. There are no lyrics and nothing to provide insight into the Tour - or when and where these songs were recorded. The production credits are pretty light as well. There are some decent photos from the Tour included. Although this may be Genesis' "pop" era - there still is some excellent music and this excellent music translates very well to the live setting. There may be some "old-time" fans who don't like this material, but I think this will still appeal to the majority of end to end Genesis fans.

Every song on this cd is a joke. Genesis used to be a good band, look into Genesis Live, Seconds Out, or Genesis Archives Vol. 1 for better live material.

Originally a two-record set, this live recording has been split and released as separate albums, volume 1 and volume 2. No matter, it's an essential document of one of the finest and most innovative rock bands of all time. 1969: Live catches the band at a juncture in their career, still reeling from the departure of John Cale and settling into the addition of multi-instrumentalist Doug Yule, who would help the band find their rocking heart. Thank god that Maureen Tucker was still around--her inspired, primal drumming makes this recording such a delight. Her quiet thumping on "Lisa Says" is understated and touching, and her timpanic, thunderous rolls on "New Age" are nothing short of awesome. Lou Reed is particularly loose and chatty, more comfortable with his voice as he stretches to hit some tender passages. And the version of "Rock and Roll" here is perhaps the finest of all it's many versions, epic in scope and focused in intensity. --Tod Nelson

Born in India in 1976, I heard this group in 2006 after graduating from an art school in the US, the way I could associate with these voices only confirms time-space-less-ness of good music at large!
Late Velvet Underground live.......2006-11-03
This disc is consistently good. It reflects the late Velvet Underground which is indisputably Lou Reed's band. I can't imagine why they ever tried to make a studio record after Lou Reed left, but apparently they did.
Each of the four Velvet Underground studio albums is a very different experience. Although this live disc pulls material from all four albums, it is played through a post-Loaded prism which is usually more straightforward rock-oriented. They play rock as well as anyone, but I still think the dynamic between John Cale and Lou Reed was what gave their early work such a special quality.
That said, a lot of these songs are played to the point where monotony becomes positively trance-inducing, and with a casual, absolute conviction that you won't find many places.
Better live than in the studio.......2006-10-08
These two discs rank right up there with the Heartbreakers' "Live at Max's Kansas City" as some of the best live music ever recorded. The band is loose, John Cale is gone, and the VU sound comfortable being a rock and roll band. The flawed sound just makes it all the more poignant. I agree that some of these versions are better than the originals. One difference from the original LP is the version of "Heroin". The original is on volume 2. I still like the one on volume 2 better, but this one is different enough to be interesting, a little more urgent. These might be the albums I'd take on a desert island.
If your Looking for a "Live" performance of the The Velvet Underground...........2006-09-08
Apparently, the story goes, that one of "Maureen Tucker's" (Velvet's Drummer), biggest regrets, in her tenure with the band, was that there is a distinct lack of quality `Live' performances of the band. And a quick peruse through the bands discography points to this being the case, with only a small handful of releases available and most largely lacking a suitably reprehensive documentation, of the band at a key point in their existence, as one of the most progressive and influential Proto-Punk, Experimental-Rock, and druggy Rock & Roll acts to ever take to the stage. And so, this is...far and away, the best `Live' Document of the bands performances, with each member giving the songs here a grittier and more dramatic/ aggressive feel. Arguably what this means is that the tracks that most will only be familiar with via the studio albums, will be surprised at how different some of these slightly re-jigged `Live' performances are. Whether it's the hypnotically slow and detached drone of "Sweet Jane", or the beautifully dramatic ebb and flow of "What Goes on", lend each of these songs seem to have a more sleazy and precarious edge, that although the studio versions were certainly not lacking in, these versions feel more visceral, and truly representative of the band. Lou Reed, in particular...growls/sneers/scowls...throughout the more up-tempo numbers, and maintains a sombre/bittersweet/poignant tone whenever the songs necessitate are slow ballad-style. With his guitar work throughout being particularly impressive. But this isn't to take anything away from the rest of the band, whom give as committed a performance as Reed. With Sterling Morrison guitar work, chiming perfectly with Reed's to make for a truly thrilling rhythm section , and Doug Yule's contributions on bass, just about holding the whole thing together, like some dangerously out of control vehicle, with the wheels about to fall off.
But the band remain at their most impressive when working through the material that allows them to truly tear things up, and so on tracks like "Heroin", "I'm Waiting for the Man" & "Rock & Roll" get fierce and intense reworkings that differ slightly from the studio versions by being noticeably rawer, passionate and nihilistic...with the sense of hostility towards the audience, the listeners at home....Hell, virtually everyone!!??, and it's one of the key reasons, that so brilliantly illustrates why keen fans of bands / aficionados , are generally curious to check out `Live' performances of their favourite acts, just to hear that intensity that sometimes doesn't transfer as well on studio albums, as they do on `Live' recordings. And although The Velvet Underground were more widely known for being such a groundbreaking acts that although selling minor amounts of records by todays standards, went on to influence virtually any wannabe drug-f***ed guitar band, with a penchant for decedent lyrics. But this `Live' performance disk (as well as Volume 2), illustrates that the Velvet's were as staggering `Live' as they were in the Studio. This is almost certainly a release that is of no use to the casual fan, the Studio albums (or a compilation) with satisfy those with only a passing interest in the band. But for the keen fan, this is by far the best recorded document of the band `Live' output, and therefore remains an essential purchase.

Great album, "Waiting for my man" and "Lisa Says" are my favorite songs on this but "Heroin and "Rock n' Roll" are pretty close, all the songs are classics and played perfectly. I think my favorite thing about this is the beggining when they talk about the cowboys/eagles game.

Classic Rock for the Preschool Plus!.......2007-01-08
Ok, I admit it; I'm an old dude, but Greg & Steve rock! They've been around about as long as me (they first showed up with their music in the 1970's), but all of their songs have aged VERY well.
I am now a preschool special ed teacher, and I have every volume of what they have available. Each volume is great in its own way, with some really fantastic stuff mixed with a few that just don't work for me. But that is OK: each CD is worth the price of even one of their best songs. Luckily they always have several that shine.
Wonderful song writing, fun remakes of classics, great guitars, keyboards and drums for us old rock'n'roller's turned yuppie taking care of the little ones. Buy them all, you will find something you love on every "album" (OK, they were albums before they became CD's), and so will all the kids from birth to, well, 40-something, like me.

My 3-year old son was introducted to this cd at day care, and he LOVES it! We purchased the CD and have been listening to it everyday since we bought it 6 months ago. His favorites - Popcorn, The World is a Rainbow. It's great to see him singing and dancing to the cheery music. This volume is his favorite!

I am a teacher at my local Head Start program, and my students love Greg & Steve. We usually listen, dance, and sing to a song from this cd at least once a week. The ABC rock is an excellent active learning tool to teach language arts skills. We use Vol 2 much more, however!

This is a dazzling recital, taped live at Carnegie Hall in November 2003--complete with applause. Lang Lang's virtuosity is almost frightening: the Liszt "Reminiscenses du Don Juan" is a showpiece when played "normally." Here, Lang plays it to its extremes, with soft passages amazingly soft and subtly delineated and the bigger moments heaven-thundering. And it is played so fast, and so accurately (a cascade of notes in mid-"La ci darem la mano" sounds like a waterfall), that it leaves the listener breathless--surely just what Liszt wanted. In a Haydn sonata, Lang's classical line is impeccable, but he's not afraid to shine through the music and embellish occasionally. The Schumann "Traumerei" is suitably dreamy and hushed; Schubert's "Wanderer" Fantasy, a real crowd-pleaser, is just that--beautifully played, familiar yet fresh sounding. And an encore, with Lang's father playing a two-string fiddle called the erhu, is a fascinating look into Eastern music. There's more (this is a 2-CD set), and it's stunning--and highly recommended for all admirers of great piano playing. --Robert Levine

Worst Wanderer Fantasy EVER?.......2007-02-14
I can't believe the positive reviews this recording has gotten. Don't believe the hype folks; Lang Lang may have technique to burn, but most 1st-year conservatory students possess at least the same interpretive depth, if not more. When he isn't indulging himself in interpretive excess, then Lang Lang is playing as if he really doesn't care much at all.
His Schubert is garbage. Let him stick to playing Chinese compositions unknown to Western audiences, because virtually none of us will have any way of drawing comparisons between his interpretation and that of others. I can only assume that his interpretation of Dun Tan is the definitive version --- but I doubt it.

Wow!!
I have read several of the 'negative' reviews here and can only conclude (after viewing the DVD four times and counting) that what may be going on with these folks is something they themselves simply don't understand (about themselves!). They cannot or will not accept that here with Lang Lang, as with Evgeny Kissin (ever notice?) the world is being introduced to the next and even greater generation of pianistic virtuosos, young prodigies who can do everything that Horowitz and even Lizst ever did and more... I have no doubt those two would agree were they alive today. Karajan wept (for joy)when he heard the young Kissin perform Chopin's Fantasy in F# minor, Mehta was so taken with Kissin's performance under his baton that he could not refrain from hugging the young boy after a stellar performance... Andre Watts, not often praising his contemporaries, mused about finding the nearest bridge to jump off after hearing Kissin play realizing he was not in the same league and one other recent winner of an International Competition had to pull his car over to the side of the road, he was so taken with Kissin.... yes, I know it seems like I forgot we are talking about Lang Lang.... Lang Lang can do everything Kissin can and maybe more...Are we to believe that these aforementioned individuals are musical idiots prone to such actions?!!
Folks! accept it, embrace it and thank God for it!... just as he did when simultaneously brought Chopin and Liszt to our world in the early 1800's (they were the same age except for a year) He has now given us another Double Blast of Pianistic Glory in Kissin and Lang Lang! Pity those who can't get beyond their envy, jealously, general jadedness with life... or whatever ails them... they need help, lots of help!
As for me and many like me (BTW, it doesnt count for much but I am a pianist myself)... we are so grateful and blessed to have these 2 young men and the miracle of DVD technology to bring their concerts right into our living room!
An outstanding performance and story of a child prodigy.......2006-06-14
Lang Lang has the charm of an ebullient child as he plays the piano. I have never seen a pianists enjoy himself with such gay abandon, a delight that lured me into a space of complete attention. I sat with a smile on my face thoughout most of the performance. However, his wonderful performance air was only second to his pianism. You will gasp in awe during Reminiscenses de Don Juan. Lang Lang conveys powerful energy though the piano without losing the delicate touches and grace. The skill is a contradiction that few virtuosos have. Bravo!
Most Impressive!.......2006-05-18
When I first heard Lang Lang on the Internet, I thought he only played fast. When I heard him again (this time live), I thought, wow! He really is amazing! Lang Lang was born in 1982 in Shenyang, China. He started piano at the age of three, and played in his first public recital at age 5. He studied piano with many teachers. I love piano, too. Although I am not going to be like him, I must say that he is one of a kind. When he plays, he doesn't just play. He feels it, too, and uses his body to show his different emotions. And he's only 23!

o About this Carnegie Hall recording? The one given some pretty bad reviews from the peanut gallery? Well, the recording won a 2005 Amadeus Austrian Music Award. And a DVD of this recital with documentary footage won the 2005 "Music DVD of the Year" Echo Klassik Award.
Music has always been interpretive and a vital mark of virtuosity is having your own voice - Lang has his own voice and he masterfully distinguishes himself with it. Lang is a refreshing draft of fresh air in a typically stagnant arena. Technically, the kid can flat out play. Period. Interpretively, he is bold, unafraid, and lets it all hang out.

Oh My God!.......2007-05-02
To say that Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac is an understated jewel in the blues/rock world is too dismissive. They have a raw energy that could only be matched by only a few, and I can't really even think of who they are. I got Then Play On when I was 15 in 79. I have replaced the album 3 or 4 times, and still listen to it at least once a month. It is a staple in my home, car, and ipod.
I have heard, but not owned Albatross, and somewhere have two Peter Green cassette tapes. I never heard them live. What a shallow existance I have lived. I just got Live in Boston 1 and 2 today (from Amazon) and can not beleive what I am hearing. Truely some of the greatest music I have ever heard.
If you know the early works of Fleetwood Mac or Peter Green, then this is the creme de la creme. Words can not describe how absorbing the music is. I am addicted to Jam Bands (the Dead, Garcia, moe., the cheese...) and see many similarities, but mellower and bluesier.
Buy it, listen to it, fall in love with the lost art of Fleetwood Mac / Peter green et al.
Absolutely, Positively UNBELIEVABLE.......2005-04-12
This is impossible to describe in words. It defies logic. It's like asking to describe Pearl Harbor in words. It can't be done. But I will try.
This is, simply put, the most raw, intense blues-rock ever recorded. The original Fleetwood Mac. Sure, the later lineup was cool with "The Chain" and all that, but this is something else. This is pure, unbridled jamming with a capital 'J'. These performances are so intense, so rocking and so devastating that it seems futile to even compare anything else to it. Peter Green and Danny Kirwan are amazing individually. But when they actually duel and play together, it's beyond description. Case in point - "Like It This Way". Easily the most ass-kicking blues rocker I've ever heard in my life. This is a boogie that's sure to blow your mind, believe me. The groove is intoxicating, and the duelling of Green/Kirwan on this song is so good it almost reduced me to tears. You thought Duane Allman and Dickey Betts were good? Forget it, Green and Kirwan blow them out of the water. No question. In fact, the Allmans in general could not compete with Mac's jams on this album. Don't say I didn't warn you.
One listen to this version of "Black Magic Woman" and you'll be saying "Santana who?". Green's tone here is stunning, and the second half is a boogie where he and Kirwan battle it out again. Frightening stuff.
"Jumping At Shadows" is a unique cover of a blues classic. Awesome melody.
Already mentioned "Like It This Way". It's enough to tear the roof off TWO buildings!
"Only You" has a very unusual melody and riff, almost Dick Dale-ish surf rock. Great song though.
And then you have a 25-minute "Rattlesnake Shake" that takes you to places you never knew existed. Unreal. An improv jam that defies normality. If that's not enough, I've heard that the version on Volume 2 is even BETTER!! I shudder to think...
"I Can't Hold Out" features Jeremy Spencer joining in on slide guitar, and he's damn good at it. Most people don't seem to care for his Elmore James schtick, but this guy can really play, believe me.
"Got To Move" is the only song here that isn't amazing. It's not bad, though.
"Green Manalishi" really can't be categorized. Part psychedelic, part blues, it's interesting. Also features Green playing some killer six-string bass at the end.
If you haven't already noticed, this album is breath-taking. It also has the most amazing sound quality I've ever heard on a live album. It literally sounds like you're there in the front row, watching these guys tear the house down.
Better than Allmans, better than Grateful Dead, and at least equal to Cream. This is the Holy Grail of blues-rock jamming.

I must say the Fray live is amazing! all the songs are very deep and there are some great vocals/

Trust me: very relaxed and quiet, a great closer
With almost all these songs their chorus and/or middle is the strongest part (Vienna, How to Save a Life, Look after You) and their beginings tend to earn a 4 rather then a 5 but almost all amaze you by the end of the song.

First of all, they sound pretty good live. As for this CD, it kind of reminded me of Dashboard's Unplugged CD. Most of the audience sounds like teenage girls as whenever the band performed their hit songs, you hear the high pitch screaming in the background, and they sing along word for word. If you are a hardcore Fray fan, you might enjoy some of the tracks where Slade talks to the audience. On one, he starts out, "It's a poem that I wrote as a small child...."

2 disc live performance that is the essential of this wonderful folk-soul singer...the in-concert acoustics are terrific and add to the powerful intimacy of the performance.

This is the first Kate Wolf collection I owned--as a tape back before normal people had CDs-and Kate live, Kate live is something to remember, not that her other albums aren't obviously recorded live in the studio, not on separate channels. How do you get so good as this. Why isnt she a household word. Thank goodness there are so many recordings. It is really worth it hear, even if you have other recordings of these tunes because she speaks so personally every time she did a song.
I've known who knows where the Time goes since Judy Collins did it around 1969, and enjoy Sandy Denny's version, but I have listened to Kate's version here for hours and it got me to perform the song!
The vision of California that Kate weaves on all her records is preciseless, unique real, and a treasure even if much of it is sweeten myth.
I feel so bad that I lived in San Fransisco and Oakland and travelled up and down California and the West Coast in the late 1970s and early 1980s when Kate was doing her best work and only saw her sing once. When I hear something like Sweet love on this CD, I wonder why I am not always listening to Kate. There is something to her voice that gets through to me, something pure. Now that I sing and play guitar and banjo and fiddle, I tend to listen to any singer or player that I hear trying to scope them out learn something, evaluate, figure out how to put what they do into my performance. Even though Kate plays the kind of music I have always wanted to play, I just sit there and listen to the song and receive its thoughts in my heart and mind. Part of Kate's magic is the superb arrangements and backup that gets from the musical genius Nina Gerber her main accompaniest. Nina is now out there solo alot. If you like guitar and this kind music check out Nina too.
Oh Kate, why didn't we realize how much of a golden treasure you were when you were among us. In her memory think of a performer you might miss like we all miss Kate--well that isnt fair because thats a big ideal to measure up to--how about someone you would miss half or a quarter as much as I miss Kate, and make sure you go see them while you can, and maybe bring a friend, bring two.
A Very Moving Album.......2002-05-26
If you don't know Kate Wolf's music, or you don't own any of her CDs, this is a great place to start. She sings with incredible authenticity and poignancy. Her original material is wonderfully well-written, and she makes excellent choices from the work of other songwriters. This is an unusually well-recorded and produced live album. I especially like her version of "Who Knows Where the Time Goes," which hits me much harder than the well-known Judy Collins version. This one never strays too far from my CD player.
Give Yourself To Love.......2000-12-10
I bought this album without knowing anything about it. When I first listened to it, I was amazed at the incredible beauty of her voice, her guitar skills and the lyrics of her songs. Medicine Wheel is my favorite on the album, but all of the pieces on this recording are beautiful. Growing up during the Viet Nam War, Agent Orange is stunning. I heartily recommend this album and have already ordered a second!
Kate Wolf: Sorely missed, long remembered........2000-11-28
I came here today to buy a CD for a lovely young lady who may, one day, marry my son. I had written her a letter and at the end of the letter, I quoted the chorus of the title song of Kate Wolf's Album: "Give Yourself To Love". It was a bit of beauty and wisdom I wished for her and my son to share.
Twelve years earlier, my wife and I renewed our vows in a ceremony at which my son and daughter played a role... among the songs in the music at the ceremony was: "Give Yourself To Love"... along with John Denver's "Annie's Song". Kate's song, which she wrote, is of the same quality... of the same feeling... and with the same heart as "Annie's Song". Her song, like his, is ageless and a wonder of beauty.
What prompted me to write this review is simply that no one had done it before me. I could scarcely believe it and could not let it pass.
Kate, in her life... that was too short... entranced countless of her fans in Austin, Texas. And, since I'm from Austin, that is my connection with her. But, it's clear from her music that she had a following in California too... and no doubt elsewhere.
Had her life not been cut so short by cancer, I'm certain that countless others would have come to know and love her and her music. But it was not to be. As her life grew short, all her friends in Austin, where (I believe) she spent her last days, "gathered 'round" her with such love that it would bring a tear to the eye of any but the hardest hearts. All were inspired with her courage and spirit... so full of life... and love.
The absence of a review of this album here was an empty space that had to be filled. So, as I said, I could not let it pass... could not let her pass... without taking a moment here to say something of the magic she brought to this world in her person and her music. Much of her magic is here in her album.
