One of THEE greatest CDs out there........2007-06-15
I was familiar with Badlands back in the day but was recently turned back on to them. This CD flat out rocks ! It's got it all, fast paced rockers, bluesy ballads and arena rock anthems. Jake E Lee really shows his other side after being is Ozzy's band and Ray Gillen is one of the best rock singers out there (RIP)
If you are fan of rock music ... you must own this CD.
Nothing like it........2007-05-20
One of the best guitar albums that you can find. Ray Gillen is an added one of the best vocals that you're going to hear ever. Expressive vocals, along the lines of Dio/Plant but more range and soul. Jake E. Lee, what can you say...the best guitar player Ozzy has ever played with. He can do anything. This is unlike anything. Bluesy, hard hitting riffs, guitars and guitars and guitars with so much fire and emotion. You will love it on your first listen and will love it more on all your upcoming listens. I am stranded looking for an album that will match its intensity. I have tried Gov't Mule, Trower, Led Zep again, Derek Trucks,Jeff Healey and more, but none gets even close to how good this album is. It is the combination of Gillen and Lee and Singer and Chaisson that brings magic to this album There is nothing like it. I have been listening to this album since it was first released on cassette tape. I bring it anywhere I go. There are no fillers here. Also try "Voodoo Highway" and "Dusk". It has the same power and soul.
the best record of the last 30 years.......2007-03-29
Jake e Lee is great, Ray gillen too!
Simply one of the BEST hard rock albums of the last 20 years.......2007-03-28
Why this album is not on everyone's list of the best hard rock albums of the last 20 years, if not all time, is beyond me. Jake E. Lee stepped away from Ozzy and made a better album that Ozzy ever did without Randy Rhoads (I.M.O. only "No More Tears" rivals "Badlands"). It's bluesy, ballsy, dirty, soulful, and catchy. I bought this on vinyl as soon as I saw the video for "Dreams In The Dark", and left it on my turn table for 6 months. As glowing as all the reviews here are, no one can possibly do justice to just how amazing this album is. In my opinion, even if it were $100 it would be worth the price. One can only imagine what kind of legacy this band could have had if Ray hadn't tragically passed.
Led Zeppelin With Balls.......2006-10-30
I remember listening to this one until I had worn the cassette tape out back in the late '80's; it has since become out-of-print on unavailable, so I was ecstatic when I was finally able to round up a copy. Quite often when you listen to an album you used to love "back in the day", you end up somewhat disappointed; but I am happy to report that this album has certainly withstood the test of time. Badlands display a gritty, blues-rock style which obviously owes a lot to Led Zeppelin....the singer, Ray Gillen, in particular is very reminiscent of Robert Plant. Although his vocals are excellent, (some of the best hard-rock vocals ever, actually) what really gets me with this band is the guitar playing. Killer tone, jaw-dropping bluesy solos, and a heavy, modern edge. Former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Jake E. Lee is the driving force behind this band, throwing down snaky, incendiary blues/hard rock licks and riffs that sound like Zeppelin, only with fewer folk elements and more balls. These guys should have been big-great singer, awesome guitar player, and excellent songwriting, but unfortunately grunge hit and killed this style of music. One of the best rock albums ever written, and worth looking up.

4.3.. Great Blues/Metal Fusion.......2007-05-31
After the semi-success of the Debut, this was Badlands follow up. I personally liked it better than the s/t debut. Excellent riffs abound on 'Silver Horses', '3-Day Funk' and 'Love Dont Mean a Thing'. Great emotional tracks like 'Show Me The Way' and their great version of 'Fire & Rain'. Other great tracks come through on this cd as well.
This is an under appreciated and now out of print cd. Ive loved it fopr years and would seriously recommend if you like Blues/Metal. Jake shreds on the solos and Ray Gillens voice sounds awesome.
If you can still find this somewhere, and had enough interest to read this review, then you will NOT be disappointed. This was great stuff.
FIVE Voodoo Highway Stars for this gem! .......2007-02-18
Cheesy album cover aside (should've just used Jeff Martin's 'gator with dobro in mouth' creation from the CD face instead.......) 'Voodoo Highway' represents the greatest 80's/early 90's hard rock band at their absolute peak. The debut was amazing but VH is much closer to what BADLANDS sounded like live - raw, edgy, dangerous, and taking chances. I remember a lot of people not liking the production all that much at the time but to me VH sounds just about perfect - it's stripped down, no frills, live wire BADLANDS. I can't even tell you how many times I've jammed along to this album on guitar - these songs will stay with me forever. Ah, yes, the songs - once again Jake and Ray (R.I.P.) prove to be the Page and Plant of the late 20th Century and come up with at least a half dozen mindblowing tracks that range from anthemic opener 'The Last Time' to Ray's soulful gospel acapella piece 'In A Dream' (a musical foreshadowing of his own death only a couple of years later....?) and everything in-between. I absolutely love the supercharging 'Soul Stealer' which literally explodes in your face and leads into '3-Day Funk' - talk about supa-doopa-groovin' (Jake always had that great wrist...) and being 'in the pocket'! Losing Eric Singer and gaining Greg's old Surgical Steel/St.Michael band mate Jeff Martin, whose Mitch Mitchell-style drumming fit Badlands to a T, really proved to be a godsend. You can literally tell these 2 guys have an almost kinetic connection as they provide for a loose but tight foundation that allows Jake to do his guitar thing with reckless abandon and Ray to shine (what a voice!) atop this latter day Led Zep rumblin' train. This album's 'Jade's Song' is 'Joe's Blues' (named after Jake's in-studio VH guitar tech, Joe Holmes, who could NOT play the blues at all but ironically enough would end up becoming Ozzy's guitar player a few years later....) where Jake proves his mastery of the acoustic guitar. Speaking of which, BADLANDS' electrified version of James Taylor's 'Fire and Rain' is absolutely stunning and truly does the original justice. Nothing much else to say other than a) BUY this underrated gem if you can find it (for a decent price) and, b) why is this album totally out-of-print (hello, Wounded Bird - aren't you guys doing all sorts of WEAtlantic re-issues?) to begin with?!
Lost Blues-Rock Classic.......2006-11-07
I have recently been reacquainting myself with the incredible, long out-of-print and virtually unknown Badlands albums with the help of the mighty amazon.com....this album is yet more proof that these guys deserved to be huge. A mixture of muscular rock/metal riffs combined with sublime slide and blues playing from the inimitable Jake E Lee, near-perfect hard-rock vocals from Ray Gillen, plus excellent songwriting and originality of style. If Led Zeppelin had been heavier, this is what they would have sounded like. Any guitar fan would love this album; snap it up if you can find it! "Whiskey dust runnin' through my bones...."
Ray Gillen - a tragic loss!!.......2006-01-09
BADLANDS self titled debut CD was one of the finest hard rock releases ever, so I remember being very excited when this follow up came out. VOODOO HIGHWAY did not disappoint! It is filled with powerful guitar riffs and of course Ray Gillen's incredible vocals (RIP). Songs such as SILVER HORSES, WHISKEY DUST, HEAVEN'S TRAIN and SOUL STEALER are heavy blues based songs that will blow your doors off. IN A DREAM is a beautiful slow paced song that really shows off Gillen's vocal capabilities. The other songs are somewhere in between, all of them loaded with blues and funk! A great listen from beginning to end!
I highly recommend this CD, along with their self titled debut BADLANDS and DUSK (their third and final CD). After BADLANDS broke up, Ray Gillen joined a band called SUN RED SUN. They have a 3 CD box set "SUNSET" available that is another MUST HAVE! It's a little hard to find, but definitely worth the search!
A True Blues Hard Rock Masterpiece..!.......2005-12-02
Ozzy meets James Brown in this groove heavey, masterfully arranged croonfest! Discusting guitar tones, soaring vocals and brilliantly executed FUNK riffage combine to tear the pants off while simultaniously holding the heart and mind captive in seductive harmony....if you love ZEP and Hendrix or just enjoy a sweet melody, some acoustic blues or a James Taylor cover, this is the BEST of its kind!
Producer, Jake E. Lee is easily in the top handfull of guitarists to venture into such coveted territory...his sonic approach is dry and at times saturates, achieving that illusive mystique missing from too much rock music!
The drumming is on fire, bass is rude, GUITAR IS KILLIN!!
THIS MUSIC IS NON-STOP BAD-ASS!!!

With this concept album, Marty Stuart pays tribute to the Sioux culture of what is now South Dakota and to the inspiration of Johnny Cash, whose band once included Stuart and who also developed a strong affinity for American Indian traditions. Though it's hard to fault Badlands' good intentions and pointed social commentary, much of it is stronger thematically than musically. Spoken-word interludes that provide transitions might not bear repeated listenings, while the wordless "Hotchkiss Gunner's Lament" (with Stuart's wife, Connie Smith, providing atmospheric vocals) succumbs to new-age romanticism. Yet music and message achieve a powerful synthesis on "Broken Promise Land," where the urgency of the performance bristles with righteous indignation, and a revival of Cash's little-heard "Big Foot." From Custer and Crazy Horse through Sitting Bull and Wounded Knee, Stuart offers a musical history lesson of tragedy than cannot be ignored or denied and hope that still glimmers. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Badlands cd.......2007-05-12
This was a birthday gift for my husband who is Shawnee/Anishnabe and has a strong connection to his Lakota brothers. He was quite moved by the words and music of Marty Stuart, an accomplished musician. His treatment of the sensitive nature of both historical and current treatment of Native Americans is exemplary. It is obvious that he has empathy and understanding for the First Americans.
Amazing album.......2006-05-13
An extraordinary and evocative album. The songs are first-rate: rich, varied, and beautifully done. It's a concept album that truly works, carrying you beyond the music and into another corner of the world. You can hear the compassion and understanding that went into the creation of the album but it's not pedantic or overly didactic (like I'm being by using those words).
This is my first Marty Stuart album, bought sort of by chance and sort of because of a great review in the All Music Guide. I'm not someone who typically listens to a lot of 'country music', but this transcends its genre, like the best music tends to do, because of its subject matter, the songwriting craft, and the soul behind the writing. The All Music Guide review said something about it raising the bar for country music albums, but I would say it does this for other genres of music as well.
It succeeded in making me more compassionately aware of its subject matter as well as convincing me as a musician and music afficianado that I've got to see what else I've been missing with this Marty Stuart guy...
Badlands = Goodstuff.......2006-03-24
Marty Stuart so far has proven to be an artist who's cd's can be bought without first hearing - they are always good. This cd is no exception. Marty and his band the Fabulous Superlatives are some of the greatest guitar based musicians on the planet. The subject matter for the disc is moving, and important. A must have.
Marty Gets It Right.......2006-03-12
While many people are not fond of concept albums, this is one that gets its message across quite clearly. Marty Stuart has created a masterpiece of storytelling with a wonderful mixture of musical styles that is a definite "must-own" for fans of Stuart or anyone interested in the plight of the American Indian. (Yes, that is the more accepted term that most of us prefer, rather than Native American.) Stuart's vision encompasses both past and present tragedies and presents it in an enjoyable musical form. The title track is a clever, driving piece that could easily find an audience were it allowed major airplay. Anyone not moved by the cover of Johnny Cash's "Big Foot" has no compassion in them. The other tracks weave a sad tale of poverty, deceit, and broken promises that one must experience firsthand to truly understand, but listening to Marty's musical narrative is a good start.
Pilamaya, Marty Stuart. Thank you.
A flawed Beauty, a gift from Marty.......2005-11-08
Today there the majority of lyrics express nothing more important then "shake your booty," or "I love you, I don't love you." There is nothing wrong with these lyrics but when they dominate radio, TV and CDs then it is evidence of the dumbing down of contemporary culture. This has been especially true in the genre of country music.
One of the musician's trying to reverse this trend is Marty Stuart, this cd is a prime example.
At their best, Marty's lyrics and new and fresh in describing the long term suffering of the Indian. At times, in their quest to speak plainly, they enter into the realm of the chiche and lost their power. This is often found in the readings and especially in the song "Three Chiefs." Yet, a flawed beauty and truth are found in these passages.
I hope he does a cd someday on the positive aspects of Indian life amidst the suffering.
It is important that we do not forget this suffering is still among us, and needs to be addressed. Many of us have a tendency to forget, and let others do the work of righting the wrongs. Marty won't let us forget, and we own him thanks.
By the way, the music is great and is in the Kick Butt Stuart Groove! :)

There was a time when nobody besides Manfred Mann really bothered to cover Bruce Springsteen songs. All that changed once Born to Run turned the New Jersey singer-songwriter into a pop icon. Still, it was in the bleak character studies of 1982's Nebraska that he reaffirmed himself as a literate everyman steeped in the tradition of John Steinbeck and Flannery O'Connor, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. And that's the side of Springsteen that clearly appeals to Johnny Cash, Los Lobos, Hank Williams III, and the dozen other artists who participate in this remake of Nebraska. Chrissie Hynde, Ani DiFranco, and Deana Carter all deliver haunting performances, but as far as the men folk go, the album's most striking covers are "bonus" tracks that were recorded for but not released on Nebraska: "I'm on Fire" sounds even creepier with Cash's craggy vocal; Raul Malo brings out the pop sheen of "Downbound Train"; and "Wages of Sin," in the hands of Damien Jurado and Rose Thomas, shows Springsteen can be just as depressing as your favorite emo idol. All of which makes this a fine companion to the original recording. --Bill Forman

Customer Reviews:
Don't bother.......2006-09-10
Like many other reviewers, I am a huge fan of Bruce's Nebraska, and I was excited to hear these re-workings of his excellent songs. Unfortunately I have to agree with many others too. It just doesn't work. They should be great but just aren't. And, let's be honest, it's a tough ask to try and better any of Springsteen's performances on this album.
Somewhat disapointing.......2005-11-20
Despite many so-so reviews here I expected to like this disk more than I did in the end. Over-all it's not bad but is somewhat disapointing. My favorite by far is Dar Williams's version of Highway Patrolman, but the disk is pretty uneven in quality and can't be recommeded very strongly over all. Some of it is fine, but it might be better to borrow and copy just the songs you want.
What A Kick!.......2005-07-06
What a cool idea - to take an album the Boss never finished and--well, finish it off. I know some people love the stark simplicity of the original, but let's face it--they were basement tapes, demos that never received a proper production because Bruce was skipping labels. However, the makers of Badlands decide not to finish the album as they think Springsteen might have (that album might have garnered 5 stars), but to offer their own interpretations. There are some oddball choices here, like Chrissy Hynde and Dar Williams, but others, like Johnny Cash and Ben Harper, just flat out work. And I get a kick out of Son Volt's "Open All Night." Even though you can't really explain lyrics like "Hey ho rock and roll deliver me from nowhere" when Jay Farrar's vocal sounds like a barbiturated lullabye. But that's what's great about really good tribute albums: they help you look at a song from another angle, one you may not have looked at before. Often the original angle was the one you really wanted, but seeing the subject from a new perspective can only increase its dimensions.
Not a complete loss.......2005-05-14
There are some very strange interpretations of the origional songs, with the first few tracks being the hardest to tolerate. It gets better, eventually. I agree with another reviewer that the Johnny Cash doing "I'm on Fire" is the highlight of the disc.
Good finish after embarrassing start.......2003-03-04
It takes quite a talent when a tribute album can be made of just one piece of work. Such is the awesome body of work that is Bruce Springsteen's. And to have the songs so strong that, except in a few cases, they come across well shows how good this material is.
Doing covers can be tough for several reasons. First, you have to be at least somewhat musically adept, which is the case for everyone on "Badlands". Second, it would help if you at least had a vague idea of what the original was trying to communicate, which is not the case for everyone here.
One time in my life I actually listened to a Jim Nabors album. Yep, ol' Gomer Pyle himself can sing. In this listening, the voice was certainly there. But song after song, you got the idea that ol' Gomer hadn't the slightest idea what they were about, and the whole thing came out as an awkward embarrassment.
When I heard the first two numbers of "Badlands", this is what went through my mind, and thought this was going to be a train wreck. It starts off with Chrissie Hynde, normally a great singer, attempting the title. In it, she's basically just wording out the song, with very little emotion. Even worse was "Atlantic City", as done by Hank Williams III. The stark original is turned so much into a hillbilly hoe-down song I actually wonder if the artist wasn't making fun of the song. My heart was sinking at this point.
But then, it takes a big upswing. To the producers' credit, they do take the stark, minimal musical background on most of the original numbers, and keep the same spirit here. One could argue that the Los Lobos version of "Johnny 99" was a bit TOO rocking, but it sounds great, and on the original album, it was one of the more fast-paced numbers.
So while no number here matches up to the original, just about all of the rest are very good performances. They are done sincerely, are often very moving, and do approach the quality of the originals. Of the extra tracks thrown in, Johnny Cash's "I'm On Fire" takes a little getting used to, but he cuts this song down to the bone. And Raul Malo's "Downbown Train" gives the original a run for it's money.

Album Description
NEH Records brings you another great European Melodic Rock import from Z Records in England. The third album from Badlands is finally here. The album features the classic line up of Jake E Lee, Ray Gillen, Greg Chaisson and Jeff Martin on what many believe to be the bands best ever recording.
Customer Reviews:
DUSK ROCKS!!.......2007-02-22
I just picked up a copy of this release, and man am I glad I did! From the opening track "Healer" to "Ride the Jack", this disc absolutely rocks! The band sounds great, and Ray Gillen's vocals are as impressive as ever. As others have said, this disc is basically a collection of studio run-throughs, most of which were recorded in one take. DON'T LET THAT PREVENT YOU FROM BUYING THIS DISC! The band is tight, the songs are great, and the sound quality is excellent.
My only complaint is that, as previously mentioned by other reviewers, the artwork in the Z-records version is blurry, so you can't read the lyrics. Other than that, this is the same disc as the more expensive import. Since you can easily find the lyrics on-line, I'd recommend saving a few $$ and getting this disc instead of the pricey import.
Going out with a bang!.......2007-02-18
I know, opinions are like a*#holes but it still makes me wonder what the people that gave 'Dusk' a lousy 1-star rating are smoking! How can you love 'Badlands' and 'Voodoo Highway' and NOT like this album even a little?! - Although these recordings were merely meant as demos, tracked live in-studio by the full band with no or minimal overdubs, the quality is never in question and the writing is consistantly strong. The vibe on 'Dusk' is somewhat darker and more brooding that especially the debut but once again Jake, Ray, Jeff and Greg create the perfect marriage between muscular, melodic hard rock, raw-yet-soulful blues, and groovin' 70's white boy funk that takes you back to the likes of Trapeze, James Gang, Zep, and Bolin-era Purple. And 'Healer', 'Tribal Moon', 'Walking Attitude' and 'The Fire Lasts Forever' (how appropriate a song title!) deliver in spades! And if you thought '3-Day Funk' was funkay wait until you put on 'Fat Cat' - pure joy! Also of note - 'Dusk' features the original version of 'The River', a beautiful, introspective ballad Greg Chaisson re-did on his 'It's About Time' solo album (w/ the Riversogs' Rob Lamothe on vocals; Rob coincidentally was also BADLANDS' first choice to replace Ray when he quit the band in '92), and 'Sun Red Sun' is a song Jake later re-moded E-Z-O-style for Wicked Alliance (where's the album, guys?) as 'Blood Provider'. It's also great to see the band finally put the epic 'Lord Knows' to tape after kicking it around for the debut album but ultimately deciding against it. Bottom line: There is A LOT to love here and I consider this album an unexpected gift from the rock gods as it gives us one last chance to hear the brilliant Ray Gillen do what he does best with the greatest 80's band to never attain superstar status. What a curtain call!
Finally Got it!.......2006-07-01
Well, I finally got a copy of this album. I just discovered that it existed only a few months ago while searching Amazon and knew I had to have it because of how much I enjoyed "Badlands" and "Voodoo Highway".
Going into this not having heard a single song from the album was refreshing, yet the expectations were also high after loving nearly every song from the bands first two albums. The album started right with "Healer" and from there it was enjoyable, but not great. Nothing holds a candle to their debut album!
I have had this CD in my car for the last week, just playing it over and over during my commute to and from work. 3 songs now stand out as my favorites..."Healer", Lord Knows" and "Ride the Jack".
I wouldn't spend big money to get an original copy of this. I ended up getting what appears to be a fairly professional copy? Not sure, but the liner notes are just blurry enough to be unreadable. I had to come here to get a track list, just to see the titles of the songs I liked the best. I do recommend owning it though if you liked the rest of the Badlands offerings.
Good reason you never heard of this CD.......2006-06-15
You wonder why you never heard of this CD? Why you never knew it was never released? Because it sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where did this music come from? This is not the same Jake who did great stuff with Ozzy and the first two Badland records.
I can't want to re-sell this CD.
L.Lemke is so wrong.......2006-04-14
Hey opinions are opinions, and that's cool... but to say the drummer drops the beat all over the place is just an ignorant statement. The comments he lists as to why the disc is "terrible" are not based in any reality. The band sounds tighter than either of the previous two discs. Dusk has some serious Stanky-groove going on and will be one of those records that the few who were fortunate enough to pick up on it will cherish as a "must have". If you enjoyed the first two Badlands discs at all then you will enjoy this supreme effort. The tones are thick and the playing is top notch. It is depressing that there wont be any more Badlands but we can celebrate their giving's with multiple spins of what they did give us.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best modern piano trio recordings.......2004-03-12
You won't run across a CD of piano-bass-drums music that is more appealing than this one. The interplay between Alan Pasqua, drummer Peter Erskine and bassist Dave Carpenter is stunning on the 10 tracks. Overall, a calm atmosphere prevails, though there are various rhythmic styles throughout. If you like the Keith Jarrett "Standards" trio but are a little weary of the over-echoed ECM sound and the caterwhauling vocals of Mr. Jarrett, you'll find this music really refreshing. The music is beautifully recorded with a perfect balance of all instruments. It is a "co-operative" trio where the piano does not necessarily dominate. Both Pasqua and Carpenter are very lyrical and the sensitive drums of Erskine are just right, a revelation of group playing. I bought this after hearing the trio on the "Music of Eric van Essen" series (Cryptogramophone), and was delighted with the quality of this independently-produced album.
concordia student.......2003-07-17
i've actually had the oportunity to play bass right beside the man, and let me tell you, he never ceases to amaze me. with things so intricate, you are never bored, but excited as the group moves from one place to another.

Simply, a master work
"Badlands" interpretation by the Erskine-Pasqua-Trio is a brilliant, delicate and superb master work.
Besides the trio work, the Pasqua piano performance and compositions are "a must".
But words leftovers when this album is heard. I can assure that, assuming the "risk" involved.
As a single reference, I would like to comment that the album I heard just before "Badlands" was "Directions In Music", by the Hancock-Brecker-Hargrove trio, plus John Patitucci on bass and Brian Blade on drums, where the piano performance by Hancock reminds me his performances with the Miles Davis Quintet in the middle of the 60's, I mean, "Smiles", "E.S.P.", "Nefertiti", etc. Well, "Badlands" work is a different approach to the music, but even magnificient and truly artistic.

Simply, a master work
Reviewer: Alex Irausquin from Caracas, Venezuela
This is a superb and delicious work played as masterful as delicately by a totally acoustic trio.
Besides the extraordinary perform of the trio, it is very notable the beautiful interpretation of the perfectly balanced and controlled pianist Allan Pasqua, whose compositions, besides, are really beautiful and stupendous too.
Simply, a master work of the contemporary jazz.

VERY Promising!!!.......2006-08-05
Before "Tales of the Badlands" even came out, I was already floored with the artist known as Liquid. The work he showcased on tracks, such as tobyMac's "Atmosphere Remix(Ambiante)and "What Have We Become" on the FREAKED! album, were SOLID!!!
Coming off the high of those tracks, I almost feel like Liquid didn't bring everything he had to this record. Or maybe he just gave EVERYTHING he had to those guest spots.
This is a very good album, but the fact that I put in a different CD after a few spins, maybe tells me that I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be. Maybe, I put too much of a high expectation on the man. A lot of the record is consumed with a sort of sing-rap style. That's not bad, but he seems to repeat this formula.
Liquid busts into a rhyme every here and there and he does it confidently. He also dips into reggae displaying an almost genuine imitation of a true rasta man. I was so impressed that he pulled it off, that I had to check the linear notes to make sure it was still him.
There is one song that is completely in Spanish and it almost feels out of place. But I don't see that as a bad thing. I just see it as a reason to give Liquid props for his vast diversity of styles.
I enjoyed this album and I truly can't wait to hear future stuff from our man, Liquid.
