Popped Secret.......2006-06-14
I curse the producer who changed these guy's sound for the worse. I saw them back in '98 when they were called Pop Secret and were selling a 5 song demo tape with Frida Khalo, Girlfriend, Blind, 33 White Roses, and,of course, Wonderworld. Those songs, in all their original glory, had a much darker, almost gloomy, smokey club feel to them. And I still cherish and listen to that warped tape.
When I found out their cd was under the name Molly's Yes, I was confused, but excited to hear my favorite tunes in glorious Hi-Fidelty and recorded in a professional studio (not that the demo sounded poor). I found it used at a local record store, bought it, popped it in the cd player and was greeted to.. Bag pipes?!
I skipped through the first few songs that sounded way too poppy to be the band that I loved (though the singer's amazing voice is quite unmistakable) to get to the songs I knew before the name change. And there they were, redone, sounding completely different, all their feeling stripped away to make they "sound" good enough to sell. Blech! And that's what this cd sounds like, a great band that didn't make it and decided to try to appeal to a wider market share, not a personal retelling of painful relationships past, hopes snuffed, and cocktail bar waitresses you can almost visualize.
I'll occasionally pull this one out and listen to it, but I still listen to that old tape pretty frequently. It's just a whole lot more personal, more real than this cd. (And for the songs I'd heard already, they should have stuck with the choices they made on the demo tape, the cd's got some weird sound placements and effects that were, thankfully, lacking when they first came up with the songs.)
I'd give this a 3 1/2 because you can't beat buying a cd $0.01, and it is semi entertaining, but don't expect to be as blown away as you could be.

Great CD...has songs that stick in your head in a good way. Damn shame they broke up before breaking into the big time. With some more experience, a bigger and better production team and more promotion...they could have been climbing the ranks like Maroon 5 did. Ed Goggin is a great singer, performer, and too good looking to be straight, though, I think its a safe bet that he is. Don't give up Ed....you still rock
A True Gem.......2005-06-23
While I'm no music expert and don't read Rollingstone, I do know good music when I hear it and Molly's Yes ranks as one of those great bands that got lost in the mix of bands at the end of the 90's.
I agree entirely with the reviews which discuss the music as not always "super catchy" on the first listening (Sugar is a blast), but with every repeat play the songs become more fantastic as you appreciate better their make up. The sign of a great band is replayability and Molly's Yes is flowing over the brim with it. The greatest tragedy is that the band broke up without applying their creative talents to a follow up of the Paper Judah/Wonderland work. There uniqueness and approach will be missed.
Not Very Good.......2004-11-17
The Mollys arena friendly alternative missed mass acceptance by just a hair, they're bland enough, to be sure, but not big enough. Recommended for fans of Goo Goo Dolls, Foo Fighters and other faceless `alternative' bands. Sounds Ok at first brush but is instantly forgettable, and not worth a closer look
Monotonous.......2004-04-20
Being from this band's hometown, I was able to experience them live a few years before this CD was released. I was not impressed. The CD does not change my opinion. The vocals are weak, the lyrics are sappy and lame, and the songs are difficult to tell apart. I'm surprised this wasn't a hit...

The first thing you'll notice about Wonderworld is the improved sound quality. While it's not one of their best albums overall (the first side of the album is great), there are a number of excellent tunes here. "Suicidal Man" features a menacing riff throughout it, and "The Shadows and the Wind" is the perfect example of the band's intricate 5-part harmonies. The bonus tracks are the other highlight here. Along with a B-side ("What Can I Do"), the disc includes a previously unreleased version of "Dreams" and great live renditions of "Something or Nothing" and one of the band's best ballads, "The Easy Road."
