4 out of 5 stars One of the best tribute albums out there.......2001-09-05

If you're a fan of European power metal then this album is for you.Excellent choice of bands and songs to be covered.I wish there were more songs from Michael Kiske era but it's good nevertheless.couple of criticisms..1) I am a fan of Sonata Arctica but I felt Hammerfall did a better job covering "I want out".2)Hammerfall were unjustly excluded from this album.3)Why isn't Stratovarius on this one?If you got Luca you might as well have Timo doing Hansen's riffs. However, female vocals on "Helloween" is something not to be missed.Dark Moor added a nice symphonic touch to the song.

4 out of 5 stars A bit of an interesting mix..........2005-02-05

Helloween deserve this tribute. I am familiar with many of the artists, and enjoy them. Personally, I can say that I have sampled this album here. I have also heard full versions of a few tunes from this tribute on the Gamma Ray website. Here's what I think.

1. Rhapsody-"Guardians": In spite of the symphonic touch, this is very faithful to the old song, and the vocals are better than those of Kai Hansen.

2. Sonata Arctica-"I Want Out": Of the songs I have heard in full, this one is by far my favorite. The band only features a single guitarist, so you'd think it would be hard to do the harmony part. Not so. The keyboards always come in handy for these young Finnish metal monsters. By far my favorite.

3. Heaven's Gate-"A Little Time": I know nothing about these guys, but they aren't bad from what I can tell. This song is pretty faithful to the original. The keyboards add in a bit more interesting feel to the song.

4. Metallium-"Ride The Sky": Another one of the few I have heard in full. Aside from the lower key that this version is played in, this song is just as fast, heavy, and killer as the original.

5. Luca Turilli-"I'm Alive"-Luca's second appearance on the record (he also plays guitar for Rhapsody.) I like the vocalist better in his own band, but ultimately, this is not as good as Rhapsody's contribution.

6. Morifade-"Judas": Another band I know nothing about, but this seems pretty faithful to the original as well.

7. Vision Divine-"Eagle Fly Free": A different key than the original, but overall, this song sounds just as good. I can't say I know anything about Vision Divine, but they sound good doing this.

8. Brainstorm-"Savage": Not too hot. Brainstorm is not a bad band, but the vocals on this cover are hideous.

9. Labyrinth-"Future World"-I have also heard this in full. I must say, the vocals and the key change this song so much, it took me a while to really enjoy it, because I was so used to the original.

10. Cydonia-"Save Us": Also pretty weak. The guitars sound just fine, but the vocalist for this band blows. Cydonia is another band I know nothing about, but as of now, they seem pretty lousy.

11. Squealer-"Victim of Fate": UGGGGHH! This is AWFUL! "Victim of Fate" is indeed a good song, particularly when the vocals were redone by Kiske, but Squealer's version is HORRENDOUS! The singer has a lousy range, which really ruins the song. Worst on the tribute by far.

12. Dark Moor-"Halloween": In spite of the fact that the singer for this band is a woman, this version of the early Helloween epic is quite faithful to the original.

13. Secret Sphere-"How Many Tears": Another early Helloween epic covered by an Italian power metal band (that's the fourth one to appear here, along with Rhapsody, Luca Turilli, and Labyrinth.) Not NEAR as good as the original, but it still is pretty good.

3 out of 5 stars a badly mixed bag..........2003-08-01

While I don't claim to be the biggest Helloween fan ever, I'm familiar enough with the band to be able to judge covers of their songs, and the results in this case are all over the place.

About one third of the songs on this CD (Guardians, I Want Out, Judas, Halloween) are on par with their original Heloween counterparts. Another couple (I'm Alive, Eagle Fly Free, Future World) are considerably less stunning, but still worthy to be a part of the album. The rest of the songs range from dissapointing (Savage, Ride The Lightning, How Many Tears, Little Time) to disturbingly awful (Save Us, Victim Of Fate).

I'm sure hardcore Helloween fans will still find plenty to love and listen to from this album, as there are a fair number of decent songs. It may even bring back some nostalgia or something. For the average power metal fan, however, this is a sub-par effort and any actual Helloween CD would be a far better purchase than this.

4 out of 5 stars Staggering homage to a band who truly deserves it..............2002-01-13

A interesting CD for many reasons ; this is Your chance to a short acquaintance with
the front line of modern european power metal bands who show their ability in
a thundering interpretation of Helloweens best material from their classic era.
[....]BR>It also demonstrates parts of the songwriting which made Helloween such
a celebrated instituion in European metal during the late eighties.
The compilation is arranged by young record company " Arise " in Spain and
contains thirteen blazing Helloween-songs which really brings back memories
from the good old days ( 1986-88 ). The participating bands are from Italy, Germany,
Finland and Spain - and most of them really prove themselves worthy to walk
the footsteps of their idols. A few of people have disliked this album on grounds of
being to modern ( keyboards etc. ) others because the playing/singing style alters
to much from the original. I can only agree on one point ; original Helloween singer
Michael Kiske is unreplaceable ( and I mean that in the most literally sense possible ).
No one can sing with his impressive, high pitched balance and vibrato - but to say that all singers on this CD are bad is simply not correct.
And further ; the great thing about ( good ) tribute-albums is that You get a chance to hear Your favourites in new/exciting shapes ( isn't it ? ).
Production is OK and the sound comes over in a rather clear fashion.
Short comments on the playlist ; technically best efforts are made by Rhapsody ( of course ),
Sonata Arctica( with a great speed-keyboards ), Luca Turilli , Dark Moor ( taking on the hymnlike classic " Halloween " - with a rather impressive female vocalist !!! ) ,
Squealer (givning "Victim of Fate " a interesting, heavy shape ). Personally I think that Metalium, Cydonia and Secret Sphere should have been replaced by other bands - but You might perhaps find them better.

The last "objection" ; playlist is great , but why isn't the undisputable all time legend " Twilight of the Gods " included ? Grrrr.....
A really good CD that will entertain anybody with slightest interest in true metal - and make old power metal fans happier than children in front of a christmas tree. Do not walk by this if You belong to any of those categories........

2 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2001-04-21

It's true that a covers album doesn't mean that every band has to sound exactly like the original, but they should capture the spirit and essence of the original songs while adding their own unique sound. Unfortunately, the only tracks I really liked are Luca Turilli's "I'm Alive", and Dark Moor's very ambitious cover of "Halloween" (enjoyable if you don't mind the Spanish-accented female voice).

The covers by Rhapsody, Sonata Arctica, and Secret Sphere sounded decent, but the rest of the CD is just bland or plain awful (e.g. "A Little Time" by Heaven's Gate is atrocious). Even Labyrinth's "Future World" was disappointing. And everyone in Cydonia should be turned into big, fat, half-priced pumpkins for creating such an insipid version of "Save Us".

4 out of 5 stars Somewhat derivative.......2001-03-07

Okay, so its a covers album - but that doesn't mean that every band has to sound exactly like Helloween, does it not? There's some nice tracks here - Luca Turilli doing "I'm Alive" being amongst my favourites, although it does lack the symphonic feel typical of LT. Stand out track would have to be Dark Moor's cover of "Halloween" as the vocalist is female therefore does not sound exactly like Michael Kiske.
