5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music........2007-01-10

I sat back with the lights dimmed and a cup of hot coffee and enjoyed the beautiful haunting music of years gone by. Memories abound.

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars for performance, 4 stars due to omissions.......2006-08-29

Why doesn't this get a perfect five stars?

Simple reason.

The producers at Silva, for wahtever reason, decided to cut down their SHE suites and Hands of the Ripper suites.

On the previous Hammer releases, "Draculas - Classic Horror Films", released in 1993, recorded in 1989, they had seven additional minutes of "Hands of the Ripper" that could have been included on this set.

Additionally, The Devil Rides Out: Film Music of James Bernard, released in 1997, recorded in 1995 and 1996 had about a minute more of additional music from SHE, PLUS about seven minutes worth of suites from Quatermass and X: The Unknown.

Both discs in this new re-issue round out at around 68 minutes, so there was room for some of these omissions.

Silva Screen gets big kudos for a reissuing these recordeings in the remastered HDCD format, but I don't understand these omissions. In fact, one of the tracks included, "Vampire Hunter" isn't even from a Hammer film, and its the only recording on this collection not on previous Silva CD's.

Again, 5 stars for the performances, the 1989 performances with Neil Richardson and the Philharmonia are fantastic. (Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Hands of the Ripper, Vampire Circus.)

Additionally, The Westminster Philharmonic under the baton of Kenneth Alwyn do an excellent job as usual (Kiss of the Vampire, Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, She, THe Abominable Snowman, Quatermass II and Curse of the Werewolf.) Finally, the City of Prague Philharmonic, who get a bad rap more often than they deserve round out hte album and IMHO, deliver the goods, under the trusty batons of Paul Bateman (Scars of Dracula, Frankenstein Created Woman, additionally, Bateman also plays the piano solo on Kiss of the Vampire.) and Nic Raine (The Devil Rides Out, One Million Years BC, When Dinosuars Ruled the Earth, Creatures The World Forgot, The Vampire Hunter)

I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.

Much thanks to producers David Wishart, Eric Tomlinson and James Fitzpatrick and recording engineers Mike Ross-Trevor, John Luard Timperley and Jan Holzner for contributing to these fine historical film music recordings.

5 out of 5 stars "Hammer & Silva...raises the hair on the back of your neck".......2002-04-09

Silva Screen takes us on tour through the castles of Transylvania with a collection of
outstanding scores from James Bernard on Disc One ~ "DRACULA" (1958)..."KISS OF
THE VAMPIRE" (1964)..."DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS"
(1966)..."FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN" (1967)..."THE DEVIL RIDES OUT"
(1968)..."DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE" (1968)..."THE SCARS OF
DRACULA" (1970)..."TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA" (1970)...even though the
blood doesn't flow as easily in "KISS OF THE VAMPIRE", the score from Bernard is
seductive, sensual to say the least for "creatures of the night", masked ball scene blends
atmospheric trance-masquerade themes, intoxicating main title is hauntingly mesmerizing with
"VAMPIRE RHAPSODY", just listen to the piano solo from our character in the film Carl
Ravna (Barry Warren), son of Dr. Ravna (Noel Willman) along with daughter Sabena Ravna
(Jacqueline Wallis), a cult of vampires in early 20th century Bavarian, praying on a young
honeymoon couple...Bernard's rhapsody captures the listeners heart and BLOOD!

Let's look at Disc Two with the other Hammer themes and their composers ~ "THE
ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN" (1957-Humphrey Searle)..."QUATERMASS II"
(1957-James Bernard)..."CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF" (1960-Benjamin
Frankel)..."CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB" (1964-Carlo Martelli)..."SHE"
(1965-James Bernard)..."ONE MILLION YEARS B.C." (1966-Mario
Nascimbene)..."WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH" (1969-Mario
Nascimbene)..."HANDS OF THE RIPPER" (1971-Christopher Gunning)..."VAMPIRE
CIRCUS" (1971-David Whitaker)..."VAMPIRE HUNTER" (2000-James
Bernard)...difficult as it may be, there is a stand out ~ "THE CURSE OF THE
WEREWOLF", fine direction from Terence Fisher (director) with an outstanding cast Oliver
Reed (Leon-the Werewolf), Clifford Evans (Alfredo), Yvonne Romain (Servant Girl) and
Catherine Feller (Christina), Hammer's departure from the old stereotype of the beast is
refreshing, Reed's performance as the tormented sole, from man to wolf is touching, the score
by Ben Frankel is tense building at it's best, to say the least, setting the tone and mood for the
transformation with counterpoints is stimulating, inclusive orchestration development for what
lies ahead during a full moon.

Without a doubt the highlight pick hands down is "SHE", composer James Bernard gives of
himself without question, the SUITE takes the orchestra into lilting melodic exercises with
percussion chiming in, the harmonies are hypnotic blends of textured fabric, listen as The
Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Alwyn display stirring strings and
a solo harp run the scales in "THE ETERNAL FLAME AND THE DESTRUCTION OF
SHE", hold-fast arrangement has haunting echoes of Bernard's constant theme, with a final
beat from a drum in the percussion section.

Must make mention the cast of players that made this possible ~ The Philharmonia Orchestra,
The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra ~ and
their various conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Neil
Richardson...supported by the illustrious staff from Silva Screen Records LTD ~ Reynold da
Silva (executive producer), David Stoner (associate producer), Gareth Williams (Dolby
Surround/HDCD Mastering) and of course James Fitzpatrick (compilation producer), who
has the knack of developing quality in every Silva Screen release...similar to "A History Of
Horror:From Nosferatu To The Sixth Sense" (SSD-1111/2CD Set), guaranteed to raise the
hair on the back of your neck!

Total Time: Disc One 68:01 on 14 Tracks & Disc Two 68:46 on 14 Tracks ~ Silva Screen

5 out of 5 stars Dude, Garm's not dead..........2006-03-30

Whoever it was that put (rip) next to Garm's name in his review: ummm..Garm's not dead, last I knew.. perhaps you have him mixed up with Grimm(rip), the former drummer, who was also with Gorgoroth and who is, in fact, quite deceased. Anyway, on to some semblance of an actual review.... I love damn near anything this band does, quite frankly. To be honest, I don't actually own this one yet, but I got a compliation called "Feuersturm" that has "Brumland Domain" on it, and it's one of my favorite songs on the album. I love it so. :D Some people complain about Garm's clean vocals, but I like them. Granted, he is a bit off-key, but it manages not to bother me that much.. it grew on me, but everything Borknagar does, in my experience, needs to be allowed time to grow on you. I guess it's a lot of why I like Arcturus so much too, because I do like Garm, or Fiery G. Maelstrom, or Trickster G. Rex, or whatever he's calling himself this week's voice. The only complaint I have about some of Borknagar's albums, though, is that they're so short! "The Archaic Course" and "Empiricism" are short albums too.. I think "Epic" is the only one of the three I have that I don't feel that way about.

5 out of 5 stars Dark and beautiful.......2005-12-14

Borknager is intense but they don't push you away like a lot of black metal; they draw you in. I love the oxymoronic(?) vocals(clean & nasty)balanced out and interwoven very well. I wish metal still sounded like this...

5 out of 5 stars i love this band!.......2005-03-03

this is one of the most awesome bands in my book, borknagar break the mold in traditional black metal, truly one of a kind, they have always kinda done their own thing and it has really worked out for them, apparently they sing about nature and life, creation in general, which i think is awesome, a breath of fresh air from traditional black metal without the blasphemous song titles and lyrics, thats really gotten old, unlike most, i really like garms(rip) vocals, and i.c.s vortex' vocals also however i still prefer garms, vintersorg also has oustanding vocal abilities. This band is a must, every metal head needs to have at least 1 borknagar disk in their collection, ive yet to hear a song that i dont like.

5 out of 5 stars Operatic Black Metal Beauty.......2005-01-15

Borknagar prides themselves on their musical beauty. They don't rely on aggressive drumming or stuff like that to achieve a musical revelation; they just use intense but deceptively simple melodies. This release is more operatic than any other of their other release. It is also a very dramatic release. However, there are quirks.

Number one, the guitars seem rather rough and out of touch with the bass. Number two, the drums are rather boomy. Number three, the first instrumental is played with piano that is distorted that makes it sound cheesy at first. However, these are minor complaints. Overall, this might qualify as the most beautiful album I have ever heard. It is a testament to the power of nature and the intricacies within its fierce yet beautiful elements.

The music strikes as brutal yet oddly harmonious, sort of like nature itself. The cover art pretty much captures the mood of the album well. I, unlike many, love the vocals of Garm. They are more operatic and rough yet beautiful, and generally more effective than his antecessor, ICS Vortex. Though not quite on the level of Vintersorg, ICS Vortex's antecessor, they are more operatic than Vintersorg's vocals.

While being a tad overbearing at times, Brun's guitars fit the mood well. The keyboards of Ivar Bjornsen are dramatic and very fitting to the album's overall feel. My favorite songs on the album are #2 The Winterway, #5 To Mount and Rove, and #8 The Dawn Of The End. One thing I noticed is that everyone's favorite song is different, which attests to the overall power of this album. This album shares the spotlight with Empiricism as the best Borknagar album.

4 out of 5 stars So close to perfection..........2004-09-26

If only the production had been just a little cleaner, this would be a five-star album. One thing I really like that most others don't is the clean vocals of Fiery G. Maelstrom (b.k.a. Garm). Most people seem to think he can't sing, but I sure as hell like his voice over Simen's. Not quite on Vintersorg's level though. Otherwise, this rather short release packs a furious heathen punch with thunderous percussion and searing guitar work. Highly recommended to fans of atmospheric black metal.

2 out of 5 stars Speed for it's own sake..........2003-11-05

and that's pretty much it. Not to mention that the riffs are VERY reminiscent of Morbid angel's riffs, which personally turns me off as I am not a fan of their music. I do admire their bludgeoning agression but having also listened to Ageless venomous and Conquerors of Armageddon, I have come to the conclusion that Krisiun is a repetitive, mediocre band distinguished only by their speed. That is all.

5 out of 5 stars Completely restores my faith in death metal........2001-02-19

This is a towering, monumental achievement. I haven't heard the other two albums, but this is a colossal disc. I was so taken with my Emperor and Marduk cds, I almost completely ignored death metal. This takes what bands like Sepultura used to do, along with Deicide, and beats it all to hell. Incredible blast beat drumming, killer low to midrange death vocals and some of the best guitar soloing ever. Production sucks, so what, get it, you'll get the point.

5 out of 5 stars BLACK...FORCE...DOMAIN.......2000-09-24

Wow! From the amazing title track-opener to the final track, this is a keeper! This is quintessencial brutal death metal! Awesome! Max is very talented, I don't know how he manages to pedal the double-kick at a continuous inhuman speed! Evil Mastermind is insane! My only complaint is the drum department is the lack of beat variety...but at least it's a killer beat that he uses throughout agood part of the album. The riffs rip. Moyses is an amazing technical guitarist! Sometimes the riffs sound fuzzy due to poor recording quality, but it's certainly listenable. His technical solos hit like a mac truck going 80! To be fair, I will admit that at times it seems Moyses has little musical scheme as far as scales go when soloing, much like metal-legend kerry king, but his technique is great! Alex is excellent, managing to play difficult technical riffs live while firing an all-out brutal vocal assault! I suppose some occasional highs would be nice, though. I'm just trying to point out any of the possible negatives, but in reality I cannot say enough good things about this album. Although I have not had the fortune of acquiring a copy of Apocaliptic Revelations, I do own Conquerers... which I also reccomend. My other favorites are Dying Fetus, Amon Amarth, and Krabathor.

5 out of 5 stars WAAAAAAARGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!.......2000-05-22

This is the album that redefined FAST three years ago. Never before has an album contained this much raging fury. Over the top speed, crazy vocals, self-indulgent guitar wizardry, and furius drums, this is an album that crushes. Kolesne is the fastest drummer in the history of metal. Check out the drum solo in Evil Mastermind. Mind Blowing. Their newer albums are good, but not as brutal as this raging masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Brazilian death !.......2000-02-28

When listening to the sheer brutality these 3 guys unleashes you have to wonder - Are they bred with Death Metal ? At about 2 years of age they probably started jamming. You've heard the term "fastest band on earth" before. These guys don't bother to brag, they just tear your head apart. The frantic speed and the extremely long and grinding riffs makes this album a total must-buy for all fans of brutal music ! Although the production isn't the sharpest you can rest asure Krisiuns intense music is...

1 out of 5 stars A disgrace to death metal.......2007-07-05

How is this band legendary? This is a poor representation of the NY Death Metal scene. There's NO variation on this album at all! Every song follows the same formula: horror film clip, followed by generic drumwork and maybe 2 riffs if you're lucky. The vocalist's growls are monotone, the drumming is just mindless blasting done by a poorly programmed drum machine, no bass, and some of the worst guitarwork I've ever heard in my life. There's no technicality, creativity, variety, or anything remotely interesting or catchy in the riffs, absolutely no leads or solos, and topped off with a horrible guitar tone. Suffocation, Immolation, Malevolent Creation, Incantation, and even Skinless(at least they're fun to listen to) are all NY death metal bands who could eat these guys alive. Before you say anything, yes, I'm aware that some of the bands I mentioned do like this band. That doesn't change the fact that I think they're more bland than a can of Red Bull. Avoid this and go for the following NY death metal albums instead:

Pierced From Within-Suffocation
Shadows in the Light-Immolation
Ten Commandments-Malevolent Creation
Onward to Golgotha-Incantation
Progression Towards Evil-Skinless

Hell, pick ANY death metal release over this (except maybe Six Feet Under).

Hi there I'm huge death metal fan, I love it, but I also accept it for what it is...BRUTAL, PRIMITIVE MUSIC! and that's why I like it. It's not art or some sort avante garde or DaDa art form that were going to look back at hundred years from now with great awe. So everyone shut the F&$# UP! You either like it or you don't...that's the way it will always be. Some People are post-modern and some people are naturalistic. It's just that simple.

1 out of 5 stars Too Predictable.......2006-02-24

Death metal is normally not just noise, as many would dismiss the genre as. People don't know about the talent of many bands like Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Obituary, Hate Eternal, Cryptopsy, etc. But then you have grindcore, which is more noise than music, and is definitely not for the ears. Then you have a band called Mortician, which sadly, is one of the most predictable bands out in the underground death metal scene.

I have listened to a few tracks from this band, and here's the layout:
-A horror movie sample which lasts from about 30 to 60 seconds
-Noise. Simple guitar riffs and a drum machine. No solos whatsoever.
The songs only last from about 30 seconds to 3 minutes.

They have done this on EVERY CD they have made. "Domain of Death" is no exception. This gets boring real quick. Unless you're a real fanatic of the underground death metal scene, I don't recommend this.

4 out of 5 stars Mortician Mania.......2004-10-14

This is a cd defiently for all the haardcore metal-heads out there who are into deathmetal at heart.
This Cd's information is :

"Phantastic dathgrind fiends MORTICIAN execute unrelentingly grim and gruesome death metal, leaving hapless blast victimes in thier bloodstained wake.
"Domain of Death", the band's magnum opus, shows MORTICIAN continuing to morph both sylistcally and conceptually , mangiling and overwhelming all they encounter.

5 out of 5 stars For all the gore/horror fanatics, out there........2004-09-15

Mortician has been making records, for so many years and also touring the country even, overseas, that they got alot of people behind them, from germany, to mexico, and brazil, china, australia, and ofcourse, usa, making alot of fans as well as, exposing people to their incredible music.

Now onto mortician's album title "domain of death" well, its more morbid then their earlier stuff and it even seems much more brutal such tracks as the title track "domain of death" and, "cannibalized" along with the production which has always been the kind of production, i like to hear from a band.

Not at all like your mediocre or modern extreme metal that being the reason mortician, is my favorite band and having the best horror filled lirycs...Ever heard, i say hail to the most brutal and original band to ever be created.

Mortician's "domain of death" is actullie a horror/deathgrind released album that should be in every extreme metal fan's collection, weather its black, grind, death or whatever. Buy it and be proud you did!

4 out of 5 stars Simply good.......2007-07-19

Yeah, this is great death metal from Krisiun. Give it to them, they always deliver the goods. Punishing 250 bpm blast beats under a wall of chainsaw guitars while Alex's vocals are yelled barbarically throughout each song.

But about them vocals. They are definately the worst part of this. Alex just hasnt devoloped a fully capable growl, but its more of a double edged sword, as it sounds more sludgy and pissed off.

Best songs have to be Messiah of the Double Cross, Hunter of Souls, and Obsession by Evil Force, but the Kreator cover Total Death is pretty cool too. Overall, there is not one weak track.

Recommended for people who liked Conquerors of Armagedon.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2007-03-09

The masters of black metal continue to pound loud drums and make their guitars scream! Everybody should love this band!

5 out of 5 stars ALL HAIL TRUE METAL GODS!!.......2002-10-28

an Early Release of Krisiun, REALLY brutal Death Metal with an OLD SCHOOL feel, Krisiun says that thier main influences were Slayers "Show No Mercy" and Morbid Angels "Altars Of Madness" it shows. When I listen to Krisiun it takes me back to the first time I heard Dark Angel or Possessed that Evil Feeling erupts again and charges me, Black Force Domain is an album that takes a few listens to fully get it, any complaints about drumming in Krisiun on any of thier Albums are unfounded ,

I really suggest if you are into Old school DM you will like Krisiun also BM fans will love it to, its just that good, Black Force Domain is thier fastst Album ,(Curse of the evil one and unmerciful order are only avaible in brazil so I don't know if they are faster)

        Product Description

Some bands and labels are simply made for each other. United Guttural is a label that provides the vast world that is the underground with no frills death-grind. Without any knowledge of the band, one could merely examine the U.G. stamp and know what you are in for. Now, is this a bad thing? Well, it depends on taste. If blasting madness is your steamy cup of urine, than this band is for you. Dead For Days slides nicely into the United Guttural roster. This is fast, off the wall, death metal with deep, harsh vocals, blasting drums, and shredding guitars. Among the frequent blasting is a few breakdowns that have a heavy nod towards hardcore. I have given this disc quite a few listens yet the songs refuse to grow on me. Its heavy stuff indeed but the songs lack memorableness, so to speak. By this, I mean that the songs just lack that something to make them worthy of frequent listens or the type of song you can hum while shopping for deodorant. The music reminds me of Gorgasm, Incestuous, the first HatePlow album, even a bit of early Origin. I am refusing to place this band as a clone of any other, rather just another band in a sea of this type of death metal. With the recent rise in popularity of heavier music, bands are going to have to try a lot harder to make themselves standout among the rest. Like Dionne Warwick, I see potential in this band, just a need for more stand-out songs. Is it hard to write memorable classics like Gut's Cripple Bitch? Of course, but there has to be a focus on songwriting rather than trying to out-blast every other band. This album is a worthy purchase for those who enjoy the aforementioned bands and Americanized versions of bands like Pyaemia and Disavowed. For the rest of us, we can wait for the next release or wait for my poor ass to buy it and review their next disc. Your choice, holy man!
